Charles,

Here is a cut of a config I use on a 3640 to achive this (This router has 12
MICA modems in slot 1 - the remainder of the PRI timeslots are used for
incoming ISDN calls):

controller E1 2/0
 pri-group timeslots 1-31
!
interface Serial2/0:15
 ip unnumbered Loopback0
 no ip directed-broadcast
 encapsulation ppp
 isdn switch-type primary-net5
 isdn incoming-voice modem
 no peer default ip address
 ppp authentication pap
 ppp multilink
!
interface Group-Async 1
 ip unnumbered Loopback0
 no ip directed-broadcast
 encapsulation ppp
 ip tcp header-compression passive
 async mode dedicated
peer default ip address pool default
 no cdp enable
 ppp authentication pap
 group-range 33 44

Re: Problem with Cisco 2620 (24MB RAM/8MB Flash) keep rebooting

2001-02-12 Thread Erick B.

Can you TFTP boot off your previous image or another
image? You have 24meg DRAM total but the router takes
a chunk of that for shared memory thus I'm suspecting
that the total main DRAM (total minus shared) is less
then 20. You can check this by doing a 'show version'
and seeing how much you have. Plug your router model
and modules through the HW/SW compatibility matrix and
see if this is a good version of IOS to support your
hardware modules as well.

On a 2600, it will look something like:

cisco 2610 () processor (revision...) with ###/###
bytes of memory.

###/### == main/shared

Re: Erasing a image from flash in 11.2

2001-02-12 Thread Erick B.

If I recall correctly, you can mark the files for
deletion on a 3600 but the 3600 series uses a flash
type that you can't squeeze to regain space. You need
to erase the contents of the whole partition to free
the space. If you only have one partition then you
need to erase the flash and TFTP the image back down.
I'm not sure why it lets you mark files for deletion
if you have to erase flash to regain space.

I can't find the cisco page on this at moment, but do
have it bookmarked on my other PC. I'll follow up with
the URL tomorrow.

Re: how to configure US robotic modem on a 2620 router

2001-02-12 Thread Erick B.

I get the best results w/USRs by setting them to dumb
mode, auto-answer, echo off, and default factory
settings. The jumpers are on the back edge or bottom
on the USRs depending on model. Newer ones are on
back. There should be a little chart on bottom with
what each DIP switch is for.

This way the modem has less chance to get screwed up
and it will work fine a majority of the time. Some
routers (3Com NB's particularly) have issues with echo
locking up the port they're hanging off of. Your
milage may vary...

RE: DHCP not working on new vlan design

2001-02-12 Thread Andrew Cook

Do you have portfast enabled on the end-user ports? They could be timing
out for DHCP before spanning tree brings them up. With your setup it sounds
like you could turn spanning tree off if you wanted. I rarely do because
you never know when someone will create a loop, so I'd recommend portfast
instead.
Also check your trunks to make sure they all have the same native vlan if
you use dot1q. Crazy things can happen if both sides of a trunk have
different native vlans.

There was a thread a while back about broadcasts and how they affected PC's

intelligent enough to take the broadcast processing workload off of the PC's
cpu somehow??.. Am I remembering this correctly??? Could someone please
tell me if this is correct and elaborate to me a little?

Thanks in advance...

DHCP not working on new vlan design

2001-02-12 Thread max hill

Have not seen this one, any feedback would be great!

Topology:
Have 2-5509/2sups/2RSFC
1-remote building with 5509 (single fiber between)
1-corp building with 5509

3548/24 for both locations for end user wire rooms

Running 802.1Q, trunking/etherchannels between
3500 and 5509. Trunking between 5509 to 5509.

On the 3500 assigning users of ports to vlan.
So if Joe in acct is on port 1, he goes to acct vlan.

Problem:
When took users to (new network) new 3500, having
major DHCP problems. It is having major problems
obtaining DHCP IP addresses. For exp. some in vlan 20
get ip, while others in 20 dont. Took my laptop and
assigned to different vlans. Could get ip for vlan 15,
but not vlan 10. (assigned prot to both
vlans at the time trying to obtain an ip).

There is not a constant or regular pattern to this,
very various in obtaining ip. So had to give statics
now.Using Win2000 for DHCP.

Also, while doing debug arp found some interesting
behavior:0050.0488.6c20 000 0.. wrong cable,
interface Vlan9,

DUPADDR: Duplicate address on Vlan182,

IP ARP: creating incomplete entry for IP address

Has anyone seen this type of behavior? I am at odds,
any suggestion and feedback!

thanks
max

RE: Windows 2000 sniffer

I believe 4.6 works for win2k.

Now, with that said, do you have a supported card that will let you see all
of the captured frames? The list of adapters is pretty small.

EtherPeek 4.1 works on Win2K also. Coming from a Mac background I've always
been quite "snobbish" about Etherpeek. However I had a chance to play with
SnifferPro4.5 for a few days last week (a friend works at a place with a
much larger budget than I get) and have to say that it's decoders are better
than EtherPeek.

Now if only SnifferPro would show the packets as they capture them (someting
that it's predecessor NetXray had, I believe) I would be truly converted.
Seeing packets as them come on the wire (rather than having to stop to
decode them) has helped me with problems in the past

There is also a large price difference also Plus SnifferPro has hardware
capture devices for just about every transport possible.

Since you are never really told your lab score, I'm unsure if anyone can
truly correlate the scores. I passed the written with a 71%, and passed the
lab after completing Troubleshooting. All I can say about the score is that
I got an 80% or better. I'm pretty sure I went into troubleshooting with a
65% or better, and I'm pretty sure I went into day 2 with a 45% or better.

Sounds like you're asking for a portable weather service :-) You should be
able to set sufficient traps from the environmental of the device (i.e.

guys polling received enough information to tell me to not set the router on
it's side (it was overheating because I had the fan intake against the desk

VNC is solid, but it's not secure. I don't think it's a good idea to use an

I believe there's a KB article somewhere on their support site
just tried it and http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp

Off the top of my head, most Exchange aware AV apps support content

Mdaemon, supports content filtering.

Lots of Unix MTA recipes out there if you have Unix mail relays.

I guess on a cisco list the ob response is:

I believe there's a KB article somewhere on their support site
just tried it and http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp
came up blank in Netscape (BSDi version). Thanks billy!

Off the top of my head, most Exchange aware AV apps support content
filtering... Mimesweeper comes to mind. Even the El Cheapo MTA,
Mdaemon, supports content filtering.

Lots of Unix MTA recipes out there if you have Unix mail relays.

I guess on a cisco list the ob response is:

access-list 101 deny tcp any any eq smtp
;-)

To auto negotiate or not!

2001-02-12 Thread Moe Tavakoli

Recently I have experiences problems with auto neg.
So now before deploying any piece (including switches)
I set all the ports/ints to 100FULL. I found the
following that mey be of interest.
I wonder if Cisco will ever just ship with 100FULL as
default!

802.3u auto-negotiation and why it's sometimes bad.

Inherently Ethernet had only one kind of Link
Pulse. This was the
Normal
Link Pulse used to establish link after an
interface had been reset.
To
insure compatibility with the least work the 802.3u
committee added
another
pulse to the Link process. This was the Fast Link
Pulse (FLP) it can
consist of 17 to 33 pulses that should take no
longer than 2ms to
transmit.
Those 17 to 33 pulses will consist of 17 timing
pulses and up to 16
data
pulses. IF there are data pulses the Link Code Word
(LCW) status of
the
link is set to 1 if no data pulses are present the
LCW is set to 0.
Three
identical LCW's must be received before they are
accepted as valid.
In the
Base Link Code Word ( the one that handles the link
negotiation) you
can
determine link speed and duplex the choices are, in
reverse order
according
   to preference:

   A0 10BASE-T
   A1 10BASE-T FD
   A2 100BASE-TX
   A3 100BASE-TX FD
   A4 100BASE-T4
   A5 PAUSE
   A6 Reserved
   A7 Reserved

If any FD type is chosen FD with the PAUSE feature
will be preferred
as
this is a physical media flow control function.

This assumes that the device in question is capable
of all states
within
the auto-negotiation standard. If not, the device
will send idle
pulses
that can be used to determine the link state and
both devices will
therefore bypass the NLP/FLP link detection
process.

The problem with the standard is that
implementation of the pulses
however
minutely detailed does not dictate manufacturing
processes to the
retailer.
So faulty implementation are a concern, if not a
common concern. This
is
especially well displayed in the typical SUN/CISCO
auto-neg process.
It
almost never works. If the auto process does not
work then one device
will
be expecting a certain status of the line and the
other will have no
idea.
Usually this results in degraded operation not
complete failure.
However,
this will usually become known when large file
transfers and/or
bursty
traffic patterns are common on the segment in
question. In my
experience
this can result in a link that is err-disabled when
a large number of
collisions are detected the link will then either
be disabled for a
time-out period or will remain disabled until the
NA clears the
interface.
This will contribute to inconsistent network
behavior.

When coupled with the max time that the link pulses
can take 10 ms
(Three
2ms bursts plus 2ms interval between) and the time
that Spanning Tree
Protocol can disable a port after a status change
(30-55s) a non
manually
configured port can caused considerable heartache.
(this of course
does not
   take into account PAgP).

If you configure your switch interfaces to 100/fd
you will force the
clients into Parallel Detection mode. This forces
the client to
listen to
the idle time pulses and determine link status from
there. If the
machine
is mission critical and/or hosts any backup or
multimedia
applications I
would absolutely set the interface to match the
switching device.

Re: Sub-interfaces and Secondary interfaces

2001-02-12 Thread george

You really do not have a lot of choice in the matter. The subinterface
configuration can not be use unless you are running ISL encapsulation
(vlans) or a point-multipoint type network on the interface. If you try to
use the sub-interface setup without these the router will give you an error.
Makes your decision easy.

Problem with Cisco 2620 (24MB RAM/8MB Flash) keep rebooting

2001-02-12 Thread David Tran

Hi Everyone,
I have a cisco router 2620 that was running fine until Sunday when I =
decided to upgrade the router=20
with a new IOS. The new IOS image is specifically for cisco2610-2621. =
However, after upgrading
the flash and reboot the router, my Fast Ethernet Interface (f0/0) is =
completely gone from the=20
configuration file. Furthermore, the IOS image file on the flash is =
also gone. So I tried to bootup
the router via tftp server. The router can see the tftp server and load =
the image into memory. =20
However, after loading the image into memory (RAM), the router just =
keeps rebooting itself=20
(running in a loop) and each time this is the message that I keep =
getting:

SYSTEM INIT: INSUFFICIENT MEMORY TO BOOT THE IMAGE!

Is this because 24MB is not sufficient? The IOS image that I use is: =
c2600-i-mz.120-5.T1.bin=20
Cisco says that this image only requires 20MB of RAM and 8MB of Flash. =
As of now, the router=20
just keeps running in a loop.

Can anyone help me with this problem? =20

OT: Port number...

Hey group, I had a quick question concerning a port number. The port in
question is port 4098. I checked out the iana port numbers and they show
port 4098 as something called "drmsfsd". Now I have never heard of this and
I can't find anything anywhere about what it is or what it does. If anyone
out there knows what this port is used for I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!

One disadvantage of using secondary interfaces is that Cisco has indicated
secondary interface support will disappear in future IOS releases, in favour
of supporting subinterface configurations.

They do different things. In large part, secondaries are a rather
ugly hack to deal with an assortment of problems caused by classful

Re: CCNA - One layer UP

2001-02-12 Thread Larry Lamb

Well I think it really depends on if you have any experience in various
areas already. For me, working in large LANs, I am going BCMSN, BCSN, then
BCRAN or CIT (I haven't decided which). If this is really all new to you, go
with the typical BCSN, BCRAN, BCMSN, CIT.

Re: Can someone interpret this please?

2001-02-12 Thread Raj Singh

Kevin and John,

A note about the "memory access errors".

If the router in question is using a MIPS CPU for example, interrupt
processing CPU utlization can also run higher than normal due to an error
called an alignment error. Alignment errors occur when the program running
on the CPU attempts to access a memory value at an address that violates the
memory alignment requirements of the CPU. On MIPS CPUs, 16 bit values must
begin at a memory address divisible by 2. 32 bit values must begin at a
memory address divisible by 4, and so on. If IOS attempts to access data at
an address that violates these restrictions, the CPU generates an exception
and calls a special IOS function that retreives the data in segments that
don't violate the restrictions. This exception funcation adds MANY more
instructions and more CPU time to an otherwise simple operation of accessing
a data item. For this reason, alignment errors can have a significant
negative impact on performance by consuming extra CPU cycles. You can check
the alignment errors by doing a show align from the CLI.

It's nothing personal: EVERYONE is getting hit by this. I'm seeing our email sweeper
get bogged down by this VBS attemting to enter our system. CNN.Com has a story that
gives a pretty good run-down on it.

The bottom line is if you use Outlook and open the attachment, it sends itself to
everyone in your address book. Ouch!

Good thing our company uses GroupWise!

Re: Can someone interpret this please?

2001-02-12 Thread John Neiberger

I just checked CCO and there are so many CPU-related bugs in 12.0(5) that I stopped
counting after a while. You might want to upgrade, if feasible.

Also, try doing a show align to see if you're getting spurious memory access errors.
One of the bugs mentioned a high CPU usage due to these.

RE: Can someone interpret this please?

2001-02-12 Thread Bob Johnson

As far as I understand... (standard disclaimer)

The first number is the total CPU utilization...
The second number (after the /) is the total utilization that is being used
for interrupts. The difference between these 2 numbers is the amount the
router uses for the processes listed below the line. In your case almost
100% of the CPU usage is for interrupts (fast switching is something that
causes interrupts) and very little is being used for the various router
(proccess switching is done via a proccess) processes.

This is possibly good in the fact that all your traffic is being fast
switched but bad in the fact that the router is getting overloaded on
traffic at it's interfaces. The problem could be cuased by other things too
but without more info it's hard to say

One disadvantage of using secondary interfaces is that Cisco has indicated
secondary interface support will disappear in future IOS releases, in favour
of supporting subinterface configurations.

multiple subnets? Are there any advantages/disadvantages for using one over
the other?.

Greetings all,

Which way do you guys recommend using in Ethernet environment if I have
multiple subnets? Are there any advantages/disadvantages for using one over
the other?.

Thanks,

RIPv2/BGP: Thinking out loud

2001-02-12 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

I am kind of just thinking out loud here, but if someone could confirm that
I'm right, I would appreciate it.

Jeff Doyle just joined me for lunch again as usual - his book that is, and
there was an example in the beginning of the RIPv2 chapter where 3 routers
(let's call them A, B and C) were connected on the same network, and a
second network was connected to router C. Router A and B was setup with
RIPv2 and router B and C with BGP.

Since C are running only BGP and A only RIPv2, no routing information would
be sent from C directly to A and visa versa.

Router B however would send information about the second network connected
to router C to A, and let A know that it should send packets destined for
the second network to router C.

Hey, wait a minute I thought, router A can't send to router C - But
then I thought about it again, and saw that I was wrong in my first
assumption. Of course A can send to C, they just don't exchange routing
information directly to each other.

Am I right?

Thanks for any comments on this,

Ole

RE: Connecting 2 routers via 56K CSU/DSU's?

2001-02-12 Thread Daniel Cotts

Can do. Make up a cable swapping pins 1&2 with 7&8 and 7&8 with 1&2. Need to
add clocking one end. Ask others for the exact command.

Re: Can someone interpret this please?

2001-02-12 Thread Kevin Wigle

Bob, Phil - and the group.

Thanks for the input, gives me more to think about.

Some more history..

This router is a 3620 with OC3 and FastEthernet interfaces. It has 48 meg
and is running 12.0(5)XK1.

According to Cisco's docs, the 3620 should be able to handle around 20-40
kpps.

However, the router shows only around 2.6 kpps almost evenly split in/out.

I have been unable to verify exactly on CCO but I suspect that a 3620 cannot
handle (very well) two high-speed interfaces - more specifically if one is
OC3.

I have found info where Cisco, when talking about the OC3 interface for the
3600 series stated:

"Max two high-speed network modules in a Cisco 3640 (includes Fast Ethernet,
ATM, HSSI)"

Now the 3640 has a 100mhz processor and the 3620 has a 80 mhz processor.

I'm wondering if the SAR process is overwhelming the 3620? I'm sure I read
someplace that only one high-speed interface was recommended for the 3620
but I haven't found that info again.

Considering the low level of traffic, what else could be keeping the cpu
utilization up so high? Need more info. let me know!

RE: Windows 2000 sniffer

2001-02-12 Thread Bob Johnson

RE: environmental device

2001-02-12 Thread Bob Johnson

I've used the following which (a year or so ago) was the cheapest setup I
could find
>From APC get the following parts:

Triple expansion chassis (it's rack mountable)
SNMP card
Temp and Humidity Card (also has 4 inputs for switches)

Put the 2 cards into the chassis, configure the SNMP card (which also has
web and telnet abilities) and you have a system. You do not need anything
else (such as an APC UPS)... With the contact inputs you can monitor
everything from the closet doors to alarm outputs on other equipment...
I can't take credit for the system as I stumbled on a posting describing the
setup and tried it out...
Perhaps there is something cheaper on the market now but I couldn't find
anything a teay or so ago. I needed the contact inputs more than the temp
and humidity

Re: Can someone interpret this please?

2001-02-12 Thread John Neiberger

The CPU is being chewed up by fast switching, which doesn't show up in the output
except for five-second utilization. The percentage after the "/" shows
interrupt-level CPU usage.

I had a similar problem when we were migrating from Netware 4 to Netware 5. A couple
of different times we created routing loops and the processor usage on our 7513 went
berserk. After we cleared IPX routes, the problem went away.

John

I have a problem with users listening to the radio via the Internet. How can
I block this access but still allow Internet surfing? The browser popup
window, through which the radio is played, says it uses HTTP
broadcast/unicast.

sh proc cpu
CPU utilization for five seconds: 44%/44%; one minute: 50%; five minutes:

The five second utilization numbers in the above line (44%/44%) represent
two things. The first number is total processor utilization and the
second is processor utilization due to interrupts. The difference in
these two numbers would be the sum of 5sec utilization by all other
processes.

If utilization due to interrupts increases over time, it represents
traffic growth. If it jumps alot in a short amount of time, it may be a
DoS attack. You can verify the latter by turning on "ip route-cache flow"
on suspected interfaces and then looking at the output of "sh ip cache
flow".

If the processor gets too high with legitimate traffic, you can use cef or
dcef (ip route-cache cef, ip cef distributed).

Failing that, you'll probably more beefy hardware.

Re: ISDN dialout

2001-02-12 Thread ICPPhila_Email_Review

Jim,

It depends on what how you are telling the backup router that the primary is
down.
If you can use HSRP, any of the routing protocols and even dialer
watch-group. They all have their own timing knobs, just setup different
timer should solve your problem.

RE: Networking White Papers (NAP and BGP)

2001-02-12 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

>Based on paliminary research, BGP seems to be the major protocol at
>the NAP level. Is that true?

Yes.

What problem are you trying to solve?

>And if so, why? Furthermore, why is so much attention given to one protocol?

I don't really understand this question. Exchange points are
completely concerned with interdomain routing. The only standard
protocol for interdomain routing is BGP.

> Is it the only protocol for the job of exchanging routes at the NAP level?

Yes/

> Finally, will BGP continue to be the protocol of choice as IPv6 develops?

Yes, that is one of the purposes for BGP address family extensions.

Re: Changes in the Cisco certification structure for CCNA & CCNP Specializations

2001-02-12 Thread Fred Danson

It says "As of February 12, 2001, new Cisco Security Specialist and Cisco
SNA/IP Specialist designations replace the former CCNP and CCDP
Specializations." In other words, the new specializations are replacing the
old specializations, not the base tests themselves.
