RE: migrating TACACS server from Solaris to Linux platforms

2001-03-19 Thread Piatnitchi Cristian

I don't understand: do you have a problem with the migration aspects or with
a missing version of TACACS running on Linux ?
For the last issue see the ftp cisco site. There is availabe a free version
for Solaris.
About the migration : I suppose you have to move/migrate just the key pairs
from one server to another.

Subject: migrating TACACS server from Solaris to Linux platforms

Hi Everyone,

I am researching on information TACACS server running on Linux platform.
Currently my company is running several TACACS servers on a Sun Solaris
8 platforms. As you can imagine, the support cost is very expensive
in regarding to both hardware, software and technical services. These
Sun boxes don't do anything other running TACACS server and SSH (for
management purpose). It also costs a lot of money to pay our Solaris
Administrator contractors just to maintain these boxes. As a Cisco
Engineer with background in Linux, I have been asked by management to
explore way to migrate these TACACS server from Sun Solaris platform
to Linux platform. I am looking for information on TACACS server
performance on Linux (RedHat 7) platform in comparison to Solaris 8
platform. I have been testing TACACS server on Linux in the lab (I
am running Linux on a PIII processor with 128MB RAM which I think
is an overkill for Linux) and I find it very stable and I think I am
going recommend to my company management to migrate TACACS server over
to linux platform. However, before doing so, I would like to hear
from Cisco experts out there about any potential side-effects of going
away from Sun. I am not a Solaris expert, only in Linux and NetBSD.
If I can migrate TACACS server to Linux platform, that will save the
company a lot of money. Furthermore, I will be managing the TACACS
server thus eliminating the need of Solaris Consultants.

Many thanks.
Sean,
P.S. My company is using TACACS to control Authentication, Authorization
and Accounting (AAA) for about 200 users. We have about 500 Cisco devices
on our network. Furthermore, anyone who are interested in
installing and configuring TACACS server and NAS, let me know so that
I can send you the instruction. It is not as difficult as you might
think.

I do not belong to this group of guys for i have been on this business for 12 years
but i'm not insecure if too many of them are coming up. Did'nt you said that

method thru which i can view the logs for this two circuits, like how long

One more thing the clock in my router always shows wrong time maybe about 4
years back time and whenever i change it to current time, but whenever i
restart my router the time gets change to the one of 4 years back. How to
make this routers clock time to current time now onwards?

VoIP Security

2001-03-19 Thread carmelo Garofalo

Hi Guys,

in my company will make the VoIP. The solution that we want do is "full IP
phones".

In Other terms, we don't want have the PBX central!!

In my organitazion, there is a firewall that we protect of the unauthorized
access.

The location of the firewall is in Germany (Emea). The location where we
want make VoIP is in Rome.

My question it is, how can i protect my Data network of the possibile access
from Voice Network?

Do i have to insert an other Firewall in Rome?

It is enough that IP Phone and the PC for every user are in two different
VLAN ?

Regards, Carmelo

P.S. Are there books that explain the security for VoIP?

As stated in the first line of my message to him... I made a few assumptions

off I was not giving a recommendation and you r right in that I dont know a

my idea on ideal network conditions (textbook generalities as u put it).

By the way I did not read the DCN book, I read the BCMSN book. That what

2001-03-19 Thread Boomie Okeowo

I have a 3620 router , that just died on me. When I reload the router,
it brings me to rommon... while reloading it comes up with a corrupt
NVRAM.
I tried forcing it to load the image from the card, it does as if it
sees it and then gets stuck. downloaded a new image from CCO and had
it copied to the box using xmodem and that still does not work. Need
your input on this.

FYI: tried the confreg and the boot command in romon... none works

RE: loopback test

Why would you need to? Do you have a link light at the interface port and
the hub/switch? Does the interface show Interface UP line Protocol up?

Cat 5 ethernet uses the 568B pinout for the RJ45 connectors. You could
create loopback plug by cross-connecting pins 1-3 and 2-6.

Hi there!

I've encountered similar problems @ a customer site with 36xx, I solved it
by placing a image on a flashcard and booting up with a completly empty
configuration. Several times the box just bumped into ROMmon, but trying
over and over (ie. erasing the configuration), and in the end it went
stable...

I'm sorry I can't be more exact in what I did, but I really only erased the
configuration several times (recieving NVRAM corrupt over and over), and in
the end it worked...

Good luck!

Re: Cisco Certs Becoming Paper CCXX

2001-03-19 Thread Chris Haller

I too am pursuing CCIE certification and have noticed
a recent influx in people attempting and passing CCNP
and CCIE written, especially the recent addition of
hundreds of people on this board ...

Anyway, CCNA, CCNP, CCDP ... CCIE Written, this means
nothing. It is good, takes a good amoumt of work and
is somewhat difficult to achieve, but if that's your
issue, only interview LAB CERTIFIED CCIE's. There is
no such thing as a "Paper LAB CCIE" If you pass the
lab, you know your stuff .. WELL.

RAS or RRAS to authenticate. Ports must be opened to allow this. Also you
may find you need to edit the hosts file to force it to choose a particular
domain controller. Without looking the ports up I seem to remember 2 or 3
of them had to be opened. GRE and 1 or 2 more.. That info is available on
microsoft.com in the support for IT Professionals section.

What do people use for a Firewall that does NAT translation? I know you

On a LAN, open UDP ports 137 and 138, and TCP port 139. I think Allen was
thinking VPN through an Internet connection. If this is the case then GRE
is TCP port 47, and PPTP is TCP port 1723. Check out

Depends on the end user.

You can use your router as NAT device.

*nix - IP Masquerading (free)
NT - Winroute, fat-pipe, and a few others (about $300-600 depending on
licensing)
There's lots of hardware solutions out there such as NAT capable DSL/Cable
modems, etc.

I use Winroute at home and it works great. I have a friend using IP
Masquerading and although it's more difficult to set up, it works great too.

There are many trade publications (magazines) that cater to the networking
industry. There may be some where you work. In the back of those magazines
are ads from companies that buy and sell used Cisco gear.
I have not checked in a long time but there used to be a list of vendors on

I have purchased quite a bit of gear on eBay. Not all went smoothly but all
have worked out in the end.

ISDN 801 Router Connection Problem

Hi

Heres the problem a client has the ISDN 801 router which is doing its job
but has run up a right phone bill. Looking at the bills Groupwise has been
initialising its call correctly and hanging up the line but for some reason
at completely strange times (anytime in the early hours when there is no one
in the office) it will dial and stay online for the longest now upto 85
hours as you can imagine the MD isnt happy.

Im new to the Cisco Products and any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

go here: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/474/index.shtml (watch for word
wrap)

If you don't want to spend the money on hardware (i.e. PIX), try winroute

on the other hand, try IPChains

migrating TACACS server from Solaris to Linux

2001-03-19 Thread Sean Young

OK, since I have been flooded with requests for TACACS installation
and configuration, I will need sometime to come up with a decent
documentation for everyone. I would like to see everyone benefit from this
experience because of the lack of documentation and the pain that I
have to go through. However, let me just say that before reading the
documentation, I assume that you must be somewhat familiar with
Unix/Linux, vi or emacs editor and know how to navigate the unix
directory hiarchy. Anyone would like to be added to the mailing list,
let me know.

Sean,
P.S. Let me just jump into the "paper" CCxx thing just a bit. The
certifications show that you have a generally knowledge and be able to
learn very quickly. A year ago, I didn't know what the differences
between a PC and a router are. I have no networking skills whatsoever. And
now, I can configure BGP,OSPF IS-IS, ISDN dial back-up and yes,
TACACS server and NAS. So, give those CCxx a chance, they are smarter
than you give them credit for.
Just my $0.03

Re: 2500 wont save config

2001-03-19 Thread The.Rock

It might not save due to lack of mem. Make sure you have enough room to hold
both the current IOS as well as the one your trying to upgrade. Otherwise
you will need to delete one of them first. Being that your on IOS 10.3 tells
me that probably you don't have enough memory.

And I see your title." LAN Engineer". I'm not picking on you, but it
just seems that for the question you just asked, its not one that someone
would ask in your position. This goes back to the paper cert thing

Re: Cisco Certs Becoming Paper CCXX - Reply to The Rock

2001-03-19 Thread The.Rock

My point was that more often then not, certified people aren't what they
seem. I like the fact that people want to learn more, because it keeps
"everyone" on their toes and learning about new technology. Part of the
problem is the industry's lack of insight into these so called certs. They
have put too much faith in them and its really the experienced guys who have
to take time out to teach newbies. No, no newbies stole my job, I welcome
the challenge tho, I doubt they could do it as effective as I do today. I'm
not saying they can't do it, but I can do it better and faster, and downtime
is
$$. Prove it on an exam ? I will in about 2 weeks. Certification is a
formality for those that have been in the industry for a while, for others
it is their foot in the door. I truly believe that there are a couple out of
a hundred that are new to the industry and truly understand concepts and
what they are doing. Its unfortunate that its the other 96 or so people that
give the certs a bad rap. And yes some are idiots, not most, not all, i said
some. I believe that certs show a level of understanding ( don't get that
confused with KNOWLEDGE). Knowledge implies some sort of experience that
most don't have. I would be glad to call you, but I don;t have the time, and
its long distance...

You are right. The packets are:

ACK

The way to remember it is DORA.

It's not SMB, though. Not sure why you threw that in.

IOS version 13.xxx ?? and a Rant...

2001-03-19 Thread Buri, Heather H

Hi Everyone.

Well, I finished my BSCN course through Global Knowledge last week. I have
to say I was kind of disappointed. I really was wanting to spend some good
time on BGP and OSPF but we had to rush through it because we wasted a whole
day going over RIP??? I thought this was supposed to be an advanced class!
My opinion is the only refresher we should have been given on RIP is:

Router Rip

Anyways, the instructor said they started making the labs easier because too
many people complained about them being too difficult??? :::sigh:::

Oh well. Thank God for this list and I guess I will be saving myself $2000
on the CIT course now.

I will be taking my exam on April 5. I wanted to study BGP and Policy Based
routing some more.

My instructor did mention Cisco was up to IOS release 13 already. This was
news to me. He said it had been out for some time. My question is, has
anyone been using it yet? My instructor did say that they finally did away
with my favorite command... write mem. A sad, sad day! Well, I knew it was
coming. I don't suppose "c r s" will work at the command line?? :-)

Re: 2500 wont save config

2001-03-19 Thread Adam Hickey

What does free memory have to do with trying to save a running-config
(already in memory) to NVRAM (nothing but the startup-config there)? Last
time I checked IOS, does not have any part in NVRAM. Plus, he didn't say
anything about trying to upgrade IOS either.

Are you sure he's the one with a paper cert? (I am only kidding, I know you
weren't picking on him) =P

RE: Firewall

2001-03-19 Thread William E. Gragido

Its not recommended to use a router alone as a firewall device. In many
security architectures you will find routers (aka Screening Routers),
running access-lists in conjunction with a true firewall solution that will
be using some sort of ruleset to process incoming traffic. This may differ
in situations where PIX devices are situated however, I cannot imagine that
someone would knowingly misrepresent the functionality of these devices.

NT - Winroute, fat-pipe, and a few others (about $300-600 depending on

There's lots of hardware solutions out there such as NAT capable DSL/Cable
modems, etc.

I use Winroute at home and it works great. I have a friend using IP
Masquerading and although it's more difficult to set up, it works great too.

Arrow Point content switches

2001-03-19 Thread Steven Dangerfield

Group,

Our company is considering using the new Cisco / Arrowpoint content switches.
I have been informed that there management connection is not routable, and as
a result transmission of any packets from the switch to a remote management
station on another IP sub net is not possible. The management station must be
on the same IP network.

Can anyone confirm that this is true ?

And has anyone found a solution to this problem ?

I have been thinking about the use of IP helper addresses, but i am not
convinced that this will work. Other thoughts have gone down the procy route
but i feel that these will lead down a black hole. Unfortunately we have no
spare kit to get this tested in a lab.

Re: Firewall

2001-03-19 Thread Allen May

agreed...but he was just asking for suggestions for cheaper solutions. Some
guys just don't get the budget to justify a router/pix combo. I've done my
share of rigging networks to match a $100 budget...haha. Personally I love
the PIX. Actually it's 99.9% of my job here running PIX firewalls for
customers. But 40 users who just want to browse the internet...I'd say that
would be overkill unless they have mission critical servers that are
publically accessible & need them reliably connected & protected.

Hey another idea..if you do already have a router you could set up the ACLs
like William suggested and then get whatever kind of NAT device you have
budget for set up behind it. This would require a real IP address on the
external interface of the NAT device though (or at least a VIP).

FYI a 506 is the lowest end PIX available now. 2 interfaces only, 4 peer
IPSec limitation, 7Mb throughput (approximate depending no if it's encrypted

You might try the "service compress-config" command...helped once on a 2600

Re: Arrow Point content switches

2001-03-19 Thread Allen May

Argh! I already went through this about 1 year ago and Arrowpoint support
found a solution for me. I'm trying to remember how we did that now. I
BELIEVE we had to use a VIP to allow this so that it thought it was on the
same subnet. Also we found streaming connections through the internal VIPs
seemed to drop connection occasionally. It's been a year and they were
bought by Cisco since then so maybe that's been fixed. Other than that,
they're awesome load balancers IMHO.

Re: Firewall

2001-03-19 Thread Craig Columbus

What's your budget? Most any firewall today includes a NAT feature. A
low-end PIX (506) is going to set you back roughly $1000. If you've got
the money to spend, you may want to look at Raptor or Checkpoint software
based firewalls. Or, you could combine the GUI interface with a hardware
device by buying an appliance firewall (Nokia or SonicWall).

Re: Arrow Point content switches

2001-03-19 Thread John Neiberger

That is true, the management port is not routable. We just decided not
to use the management port at all. We allowed certain ports through the
firewall for our NMS to reach the switch and then we use SSH for command
line management. This works great for us and we didn't have to mess
with that dang management port.

Group,

Our company is considering using the new Cisco / Arrowpoint content
switches.
I have been informed that there management connection is not routable,
and as
a result transmission of any packets from the switch to a remote
management
station on another IP sub net is not possible. The management station
must be
on the same IP network.

Can anyone confirm that this is true ?

And has anyone found a solution to this problem ?

I have been thinking about the use of IP helper addresses, but i am not

convinced that this will work. Other thoughts have gone down the procy
route
but i feel that these will lead down a black hole. Unfortunately we
have no
spare kit to get this tested in a lab.

RE: 2500 wont save config

2001-03-19 Thread Leigh Anne Chisholm

If a Cisco router has been set with a configuration register to bypass parsing
the startup-config file (such as in the case of password recovery - and it's
oh so easy to forget to reset the config register to 0x2102 afterwards), the
operation of the router will appear as if the router isn't saving changes made
to the router's configuration when in fact it actually is. Setting the config
register to the default of 0x2102 can easily remedy this problem.

When posting a problem to the list, it's quite helpful to not only post the
perceived problem, but the circumstances that have led to the perception of
what the problem is. In this particular case, it's important to know if an
error message is being received indicating specifically that the router is
unable to save the config, or if the poster (Wm. Spencer Plantier) is assuming
his configs aren't saving because he doesn't see the router load with the
settings he attempted to save in the startup-config.

I am not using any ACLs and users are able to make connections to hosts that
our not part of our network.

For the moment I have permitted ICMP any any and I cannot ping an external
address (global_ip) from the inside network.
On another PIX that is set up with static and conduit entries, I have always
been able to ping the external address from my desktop on the internal
network. I cannot do that on this new PIX.
I have compared my configurations and they I am not able to identify
anything that would cause the problem.

If you have a true 4000M- yes. 16 FLASH & 32 RAM is tops for that box. If
you have a 4000 (with the boot ROMs), there is a kit to make it 16 FLASH,
but it stays 16 RAM (no big advantage here).

There are great deals on 4000/3600/2600 FLASH these days. I have 4 devices
that take 4000 style FLASH & I have used
http://www.computerpartsnow.com/index.html a number of times. I highly
recommend them. If you are looking for RAM or 2500 FLASH [EMAIL PROTECTED] this
guy is great to deal with. He sells either Cisco or knock-off. I used
know-off stuff (1/4 the price).

Good Luck with the "M"

You sound very insecure about your knowledge and your job security.

Why must you bash newbies? Are you scared of them? Do they threaten
your job? I'd take a newbie with an open mind over a jerk who thinks

ALL of your time "fending off evil newbies" and then loose whatever

One other suggestion, he may be able to check with a local ISP. They may be
able to provide this service for him significantly cheaper than an outright

Re: IP Relay in IPX/IGX

2001-03-19 Thread Said Khomsi

Each IPX/IGX node to be managed by StrataView Plus (NMS : still called SV+)
must be configured with an IP Relay IP Address (cnfnwip).
The gateway node must be configured with both LAN and IP Relay IP Addresses.

The IPX/IGX routing and IPX/AF feeder modes must be configured with read and
write SNMP community names.
The SNMP community names "public" and "private" are configured in SV+ for
GET and SET respectively as defaults.

The directly attached node (Gateway node) must be configured with IP Relay
IP address before starting StrataView Plus.

You must prepare a list of all nodes in the network that will be collecting
statistics for display on this StrataView Plus workstation. If there is only
one StrataView Plus workstation attached to the network, this list will
consist of all nodes in the network. Every node without a LAN IP address
must have an IP Relay IP address assigned. Use the "cnfnwip" command to
assign IP Relay addresses.

Note Do not assign the same number to a LAN IP address and an IP Relay IP
address. Each address must be unique.

Note: if the node is in production and you want to modify the IP address
using a command:"cnflan", this may cause a node failure "switch cc" node
become unreachable, be careful then.

Try the following URL:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/wanbu/svplus/9_1/aixig/config.htm

Regards,
Said.

RE: Cisco Certs Becoming Paper CCXX - Reply to The Rock

2001-03-19 Thread Belt, Louie

If I gave you all of the manuals and engineering specs on a car and told you
to study them and then tested you on every detail in those books and you
were able to pass the test would that prove anything?

If I then gave you all of the tools and all of the parts to a car and said
"build it" and you successfully built it, and I then sent you away and I
broke the car (in several ways) and told you to come back and fix it and you
were able to fix it would this prove anything?

Obviously it would prove a lot. This is what the CCIE certfication is like.
You must study all of the networking manuals and know every detail and pass
a difficult exam to prove your knowledge. Then you are given all of the
tools and equipment you need and you must build an extremely complex routing
and switching network in a very short amount of time using very limiting
rules. If you succesfully complete the task, you then get to leave while
someone "breaks your network in any untold number of ways" you are then
told to fix it once again in a very limited time frame.

If you can accomplish this, then you become a CCIE. I think the CCIE
certification proves a lot. It proves you have the knowledge, the ability
and the troubleshooting skills. It also shows you can work under pressure to
accomplish a goal in a limited time.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong

No im just overworked, like anyone else in the IT industry Hey I agree
with ya. I'm actually pretty down to earth. I'm just sick of people saying
how being certified is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I'm not a jerk

person in and train them instead an person who thinks they know everything.
I'll be the first to admit that I by no means am greater than anyone. And if
for one mintue you think you have an edge, you already have fallen behind,
because someone will always be better. I know what I know now, only due to
