Please Help with VLSM [7:9024]
Hi group, Please just throw more light of this. If I have a block of ip address, can I use different subnets for different purposes like this: If my block is 216.73.203.0 1. 216.73.203.0/26 4 Networks, 64 Hosts each 2. 216.73.203.0/27 -- 8 Networks, 32 Hosts each 3. 216.73.203.0/28 -- 16 Networks, 16 Hosts each 4. 216.73.203.0/29 -- 32 Networks, 8 Hosts each 5. 216.73.203.0/30 -- 64 Networks, 4 Hosts each. My desire is to use the item 5 for all my WAN links since it only have 2 valid hosts per network and the rest for other purposes. But my problem is if I have use two same IP-addresses but from different networks (eg one from item 3 and the other from item 4 above) assigned to two different hosts on both ends of a routable network, wouldn't the system response with a conflict/duplication of IP-addresses or give some other kind of error? Eg If, I have this scenerio: Host A = 216.73.203.21 255.255.255.248 (ie a host on network 216.73.203.16/29) Host B = 216.73.203.21 255.255.255.252 (ie another host on network 216.73.203.20/30) Questions: Since both hosts are on both sides of a routable network: 1. Wouldn't there be an IP-address conflict? 2. Wouldn't it be a duplication of IP-address? 3. If I ping 216.72.207.21, which of the two host will reply? OR 4. Is it that I can only variably subnet a block of IP-addresses once, say /29 and use only hosts from that subnet and cannot do another subnetting on that same block when the need arises? These are my questions. How I wish someone can clear this, for it will help myself and many other people in the group. Rgards. Re: NTP configuration [7:9025]
Do you have any higher-end routers with the calendar function? (show calendar). This function will keep the clock/date set on reloads. Set this router up as ntp server. If you don't have a router with calendar feature then you can do ntp server on one and point all others to it. When the server reloads you'll need to set clock/date manually again. This won't be as accurate as a real atomic clock but... I guess the real question is, how important is time to you? --- Cjack wrote: I want to config a network that consist about 17 routers. RE: Please Help with VLSM [7:9024]
I believe you can do that, if you enable subnet zero, and there won't be any address conflict because the subnet masks are different. But, you will not get the number of subnets and hosts that you have specified. This is because each time you subnet, you use up one address from the block you are subnetting from - hierachical thing. I would personally reserve bits from the assigned prefix block, and use those reserved addresses for further subnetting. That way you will not get into the pitfall where a network address is also a host address. CM -Original Message- From: Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA. RE: Please Help with VLSM [7:9024]
1. The command is ip subnet-zero. It is a global config command, and can be enabled on any router. This is generally not advised, due to inherent confusion between subnet and network addresses. 2. Starting with the block 216.73.203.0/24, reserve 2 bits from the host portion, this will give you 2 new subnets (ignoring the all zeroes, and all ones) - 216.73.203.64/26, and 216.73.203.128/26. Repeat the same process, again using 2 bits from the host portion (you can use 1 bit if you like). The block, 216.73.203.64/26 will yield the subnets - 216.73.203.80/28 and 216.73.203.96/28. The other block, 216.73.203.128/26 will yield the subnets - 216.73.203.144/28 and 216.73.203.160/28. Repeat the same process to get /30 subnets. Please note that you can use any number of bits, and you can also use the first and last subnets of all subsequent blocks. Do not use the first subnet (all zeroes) of the main block (216.73.203.0), for the issue already pointed out. Hope this helps. CM -Original Message- From: Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA. This will usually work, but often results in a great deal of variance (NTP calls it dispersion) over time due to variancein propagation delay. If you want to border on being rude, synchronize two of them to external sources. But at best you will get stratum 2. Then have everything internal synchronize to your source(s). They will be very accurte stratum 3 servers (variance from your reference clock will be minimal). It isn't polite etiquette to sync too many routers to external sources, so get yourself one, or at most two, good internal references. We use a 7505, which has an internal calendar, and the 'ntp update-calendar' keeps the date correct as well (some routers have no clue, that's why they default to reporting time as elapsed time since it last booted). I've not tried to setup broadcast servers or peers, but just settle for setting 'ntp server aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd' pointing to my really sunchronized router, or maybe add 'ntp server eee.fff.ggg.hhh' to point to the secondary. No playing with broadcasts, peers, and the like. Works quire well, and we are within few milliseconds of real time, which is close enough for me. Strage DDR problem [7:9043]
Hi all, I am getting a strange problem with DDR connection from a 801 to 803. Both routers are running IOS Ver. 12.1. If 801 orginates the call 803 answers the call and the call gets disconnected in less than aminute and in the meantime I cannot ping from 801 to 803 or the otherway. If 803 orginates the 801 answers without any problem and I can ping from 801 to 803 with 100% success. But when I ping from 803 to 801 the max success rate I get is 60% and normal is 40%. (I tried pinging the remote BRI interface, Ethernet Interface and PC in Remote network all with same result). I want to configure these routers to do tranperant bridging and tried bridging configuration also. With bridging config, If I keep the priority of 803 low, 801 learns 803 as root bridge and learns the MAC address of PC's on the network connected to Ethernet port of 803 but 803 doesn't learn any address for 801 network. Also if I reduce the priority of 801, 803 doesn't learns that and both routers claim to be root bridges. Also there is no data traffic between them. I can't figure out the reson for this if anybody have any idea I will be glad to hear it. Is this a verboten subject? Just wanted to add my two cents sure, lab tests at the ccna level would make it harder, and maybe Cisco could do something with a simulator to avoid the logistic problems but hey, guys, they could go a long way to solving the problem without changing any of their software if the questions were at a more appropriate level ... it would be very easy to write multiple choice questions that require a greater depth of understanding than what was on the real test, which I found rather disappointing. RE: T in IOS software [7:9053]
the T in the IOS version denotes the train. a train is kinda like a version of the OS that contains certain modifications to the already present feature sets. For instance, the XI train in version 12.1 has s00per d00per special modifications for VoIP. The T train is used to introduce new features and things. you'll see things that are not ready / tested enough to be put into the Main line in the T train. I however, have not had too many bad ex[eriences resulting from T train usage, but then again, even the most stable things have bugs. Read this its a thought [7:9006] Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 19:28:09 -0400 Hello, I just couldn't resist stating this on the groupstudy, please respond with your feelings on this matter. I started studying for my CCNA back in October of last year. I was lazy so I took my time and passed the test in December of last year. I got lazy for a while and then I began studying for my CCNP in April. at the end of May I took my certification tests, my goal was to take: 1) CCNP Foundation Exam 2.0 2) CCNP CIT 2.0 Exam 3) CCDA Exam 4) CCDP Exam Within a two week time frame I passed all of these exams. What is my point, I'm dissapointed that I was able to pass all of these exams in two weeks. The state of certification today stinks in my opinion. They offer you multiple choice exams, why? So many people are getting certified in this and certified in that, that after awhile our certs will be of no value. The only reason the CCIE is the almighty is because you have to take a lab to pass it. Why don't they require everyone to take a lab test for all levels of tests. It does not have to be a full blown equipment lab but why can't the tests be virtual in nature. Setup a virtual lab test sorta like the Sybex CCNA simulator setup, and make people enter some crucial commands by memory or fill in the blank. Specify the connector that should be attached to this interface, configure the CSU, etc... etc... See, the problem is, I've studied for multiple choice tests all of my life, In college you took the same multiple choice tests, however every once in a while you had to be creative and pass an essay exam which truly tested your ability to know the process and know the facts. I realize it is easier to write a multiple choice exam and make money, but from our perspective it cheats us. The problem is that I studied my ass off to pass the tests, but a lot of the information you study for a multiple choice test leaves your head instantaneously. If all Certification tests reguardless of level included a lab portion it would test our ability to be creative with a design on a design exam, or test our troubleshooting knowledge on a troubleshooting exam, not merely remember a fact. I owe a lot to certifications because they have helped my career along, but in the same vein I still can't survive without my degree. The credibility of exams these days is diminishing along with the economy. As long as it is a dog eat- dog world as we have always known it to be, we are all in trouble. The only people that stand to make money off of us by writing multiple choice exams are the vendors of the equipment and those who train us. W are getting ripped off here guys and there will never be an end to the price increases on exams and labs if we don't work to improve the quality of the exams that are given. If everyone can pass these exams without ever touching any equipment then these certifications mean nothing. My heart tells me that the CCIE is the most coveted by all because it challenges your true ability to function in a real world scenario, and not everyone has it because their is a lab portion which truly tests our skills not just our memorization ability. Have you ever worked with the guy who knows everything, yet you study for all those certifications and you still feel completely inferior around him. Sure your title says CC this and MC that, but while your studying, the know it all veteran with no certifications is basically running the business by keeping the network running, keeping management happy, keeping customers happy, and most of all contributing to the profitability of the company. This is not meant to be a cut on any of us networkers, and I'm not saying I'm any different then the rest. However, my goal on certifications has changed dramatically. If there is not a lab component I'm not interested. We have to fight for the value of our studies, if not then we will all be searching for a new line of work. Re: Passing Exams without a lab!! Read this its a thought [7:9078]
Remember that you are taking an exam sponsored by a vendor for the sole purpose of selling more of the vendors equipment. If the exams were too hard few people would pass and therefore when the buying decisions are made cisco would come up less often. If the exams were too easy cisco would lose credibility by certifying that people unskilled in their products were actually skilled professionals. In other words not a single certification exam is about anything other than a marketing tool. Ben, CCNP --- JC wrote: Hello, I just couldn't resist stating this on the groupstudy, please respond with your feelings on this matter. We're looking at it from the view that it's only IP traffic that's interesting as well, John. The IPX traffic should already be encapsulated by then for use in the tunnel. My thinking is this: since IPX is not being routed directly across the ISDN link, then there is no need to place IPX traffic in the dialer list. You don't want IPX traffic to trigger the dialer, you want IP-tunneled IPX traffic to trigger it. So, configure the dialer list so that the IP tunnel itself is interesting and then utilize floating static routes or dialer watch to bring up the backup line. If the main line goes down, the router will still want to tunnel that traffic but it then knows it has to bring up the backup link to reach the opposite end of the tunnel. Regards, John James Haynes 6/18/01 1:09:47 PM I'm working on a situation where two routers are to be connected by a frame-relay connection. An ISDN dial-backup will be available. A tunnel interface has been created to bring IPX across the IP Backbone. My question involves the dialer-list on the BRI interface. When I'm defining interesting traffic for the list is the IPX traffic to be considered as interesting, or does the check for interesting traffic occur only after the IPX traffic has been encapsulated for use in the tunnel and thus, it is only IP traffic that should be examined? If the IPX traffic is to be looked at to define interesting traffic can more than one dialer-group be applied to the BRI interface in the same way that an interface can have more than one access-list as long as it's one per protocol, per direction? This way interesting IP or IPX traffic would bring up the backup ISDN line. -- James Haynes Network Architect Cendant IT A+,MCSE,CCNA,CCDA,CCNP,CCDP Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7i=9082t=8982 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Aironet 350 bridge questions [7:9094]
All, I have a few questions regarding the Aironet 350 workgroup bridges and I haven't yet found the answers on CCO. I'm connecting building to building via Aironet. 1. Is the 350 series good for this? From what I can, find the 350 series appears to be superior to the 340 series. However, I'm being told by a design guy that the 350 bridges won't connect building to building. His opinion doesn't appear to be accurate. Furthermore, the 350 series workgroup bridges are $499 vs $1,499 for the 340 workgroup bridge. Is this because of limited ability or aggressive pricing by Cisco? 2. The 350 workgroup bridge documentation at http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/pcat/350wgbr.htm shows the workgroup bridge being connected to the network via an access point. Is this the proper configuration for building to building? I've seen 340 series workgroup bridge kits that are designed to connect buildings via bridge to bridge (not using an access point). 3. Can the 350 workgroup bridge be powered from a regular power adapter as well as from the ethernet cable? Thank you very much for your help! Connecting Two 3548XL's with GigaEthernet [7:9098]
I recently accquired two 3548XL's I want to connect both via giga ethernet. The problem I'm facing is that the link light will go up on one, but not on the other. I had the TX/RX ports reversed ie RX going to the TX on the other switch and vice versa. I configured both 0/1 modules with no negoiation auto, and duplex full. When I bring an interface up say on 3548XL-A and 3548XL-B, the A comes up, the B comes up but goes down right away. The link light stays up on the 3548XLA. When I switch the cables around (multi mode fiber) the opposite happens. IE. B interace comes up, and A goes down. I can't provide configs right now, but I will in a few hours (I'm not at home right now). I've tried different fiber cables and no go. I know for a fact they work. If anyone who has this type of config or knows how I should tackle it could drop me a line, I would appreciate it. -- Sanity is calming, but madness is far more interesting. Re: ping r1.ccie.com now working!! [7:9022]
actually, the way it works is: 1. Lookup local hosts (that is, host that are defined in the ip host commands 2. Lookup with domain server (that is, if you have ip name-server defined) If you have no ip domain-lookup 3. Appending the ip domain-name only resolves if you have a host defined with the full domain name. Re: Aironet 350 bridge questions [7:9094]
The 350 are superior to the 340 in the area of power transmitted, but you have to be aware that Cisco WORKGROUP bridges are jsut for small workgroups. I believe that they only allow 3-4 machines to use the bridge. That is the reason for the lower ($500) price versus the full 350 bridge at $1400. If it has WBR in the part number , then it is limited to 3-4 machine. Joel Lurker wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... Re: Passing Exams without a lab!! Read this its a [7:9078]
I passed the CCNA exam yesterday with a score of 903 on my first try! Eight months ago I had 0 networking knowledge. This post really took the wind out of the sails of my celebration! There are some points I want to make, both positive and negative: 1. I do not believe I could have passed without lab time, both in the two semesters of Networking Academy and the Sybex virtual lab. 2. As someone making a mid-life career change, certification was important to me for two reasons, clasees were the only way for me get my feet wet in the IT arena (while I was a full-time retailer) and it was the only way for me to achieve credibility with technical people after a career owning retail stores. 3. I have always suspected that passing a multiple choice test is vastly different from work in a wiring closet. My next step is work, further certifications will wait. 4. I personally know two uncertified networkers making in excess of $100K. They do it with know-how and a willingness to go literally to the ends of the Earth. I know 3 with CCNA certifications that work in school districts at relatively low pay. 5. Certification is a test of knowledge which, even in IT, is not the same as skill. Related to point 3, above, I want to eventually design networks full-time. Does anyone have an opinion as to weather network administration or network installation is the better choice for a first job? Or is another path quicker to my goal? PGP from Network Associates will do the trick. However, we are using it now and quite frankly, I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy! The most complex, troublesome and administrative disaster this software has proven to be!!! But, if you're looking for e-mail encryption, certificate servers, etc...And your company has about $12,000 and 4 weeks to spare, then PGP by NA will serve you well. -C -Original Message- From: anthony moore [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2001 5:31 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: e-mail encryption [7:9109] Does anyone use any type of e-mail encryption for their entire company. Strange Encryption Problem/Mystery/Bug???? [7:9131]
Hi all, Thought I'd ask if anyone has experienced similar to a problem I've had recently. It's going to TAC now and I've got a workaround, but I'd be interested if anyone could suggest the reason or confirm a bug which I have been unable to locate. These routers had been running for nearly a year with no problems. All of a sudden they started giving problems and I have been unable to track down what external network changes may have triggered it. There were no config changes to the two routers (We run Resource Manager Essentials which monitors router config changes) Set-up was two 3660's running 12.1.1T, DES encryption over serial 2Mb link. The links were set up with encryption peers as the serial IP addresses and encryption access lists set up symmetrically without using any any on the serial interfaces. After reload routers come up fine and encryption runs O.K. After a varying length of time (around 5-10 minutes), the CPU utilisation builds up gradually until it sits at around 98%. This utilisation was almost totally due to encryption process. After swapping out the router and upgrading IOS, the problem still existed. I have got around the problem by using IP Unnumbered Loopback0 on Serial links. CPU utilisation now hovers around 2%. Anybody seen similar, or suggest what could make the CPU utilisation snowball like this? Re: CCIE Lab Construction [7:9092]
Ken, Congratulations on the equipment. Those are some great pieces. I suggest setting up the 2621's with Enterprise w/FS Plus IPSec. Check memory requirements before loading and compare with your memory/flash installed. With it you can experiment with CBAC, which provides a firewall similar to the PIX. I recommend getting (2) other routers if possible. The 4000's are good buy now with 4 serial port module installed (to use as a frame switch), and a termserver. A 2509/2511 is recommended, but a 508/516 will work as second choice. Just start checking out labs at www.fatkid.com or in the All-in-One CCIE LAB book and you will setup your lab many ways doing the labs. Re: Strange Encryption Problem/Mystery/Bug???? [7:9131]
1. Have you checked the health of the serial interfaces? (line hits, CRC errors, dropped packets, etc) 2. Did the traffic over the line increase dramatically? 3. Although it sounds like these are production routers, have you looked at a short-timed trace of 'debug crypto ipsec' and/or 'debug ip isakmp'? Do your 'show crypto' stats show anything revealing? -e- - Original Message - From: Gareth Hinton To: Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2001 6:29 PM Subject: Strange Encryption Problem/Mystery/Bug [7:9131] Hi all, Thought I'd ask if anyone has experienced similar to a problem I've had recently. RE: new RFC Resource [7:8951]
This site has it's good and bad points. Searching by word or phrase can indeed help locate things more easily, but it can work against you. For example, I did a search on ARP and got 60 hits. Not one of which had the RFC title. The index page gives RFC numbers, but again no titles. So for the fun stuff - the joke RFC's, one might benefit from this site. For real research I still prefer the ietf site. Where RFC titles are returned when one searches. Guess I'm just a stick in the mud.
