If you feel your going to have more than 10 concurrent connections with
differing source IP addresses why not set up your network with a proxy
server for web access, then you can have more than 10 sessions using only 1
source IP address.

Hi James,

I already took the CCNP (including router sims) and CCDP. I think you
doesn4t really need to use router sims for taking the exam. There are some
simple configurations to do (such as implementing two-side OSPF).

Hi all,

Fresh from the CCNA I have just started study for CCNP routing exam, this is
probably not an unusual question but I would appreciate any advice.

Although I have a small lab at home I found routing sims invaluable in
studying for the CCNA, do any of you know of any good ones for the CCNP?
Specifically sims with support for OSPF, EIGRP and BGP.

Thanks, James.

Queuing Question [7:56139]

2002-10-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,

In custom queuing, there are 16 user customisable queues plus 1 system queue
(0).

All the documentation I have read states a variation of the following
sentence:- The system queue is served before all other queues.

I am sorta confused by this.

My question is this ...
(1) Since there are no configuration parameters for queue list 0, does
custom queuing sort of have a 'priority' queing mechanism for Queue 0, in
that Queue 0 will be completed 'drained' before the normal round-robin
procedures occur for Queues 1 - 16, or
(2) Does Queue 0 also take part in this round-robin mechanism in that since
Queue 0 is first, it gets served first, but is not allowed to hog the
bandwidth and only a certain amount of packets are sent before the next
queue is served.

My guess is that that Queue 0 will have to be completely empty before the
other queues are serviced by custom queuing

Thanks for your insight

Yes, I believe this is what occurs. The catch is that you (the engineer)
can't configure what goes into Queue 0, which leads to *my* question about CQ
- what goes into Q0? I mean, if I leave CDP running, do all my CDP packets
go
into Q0? Do SNMP traps go into Q0? I'm basically looking for a *list* of
protocols that automatically get assigned to Q0. Can anyone offer any
insight?

Thanks,

Not entirely true. Some higher end routers, 7500 for example, have a

Why not purchase a 16MB ISA flash card and build your own pix firewall?
The pix flash (16MB) comes with un-restricted license (6 interface supported)
and cost only $500.00. The whole thing will cost less than $600.00.
$50.00 for a 350MHz CPU and motherboard, $30 for the chasis, $20 for 4 NICs
and $25 for 256MB of PC-100 memory... and you have yourself a pix firewall.
It will work; however, using it in a production environment is another
matter since I

Why not purchase a 16MB ISA flash card and build your own pix firewall?
The pix flash (16MB) comes with un-restricted license (6 interface
supported)
and cost only $500.00. The whole thing will cost less than $600.00.
 $50.00 for a 350MHz CPU and motherboard, $30 for the chasis, $20 for 4

and $25 for 256MB of PC-100 memory... and you have yourself a pix

It will work; however, using it in a production environment is another

AFAIK, all other PIX models only have the restricted/unrestricted

The DHCP is for people who do not have a DHCP server on their network.
 At
some companies not everyone needs to go out on the internet. Therefore,
 50
users could and everyone on your 100 user network can get an ip
 address.
Remember licensing is pure profit. The unrestricted is the cheapest way
 in

A: In addition to low level keepalives, some protocols whose traffic is
originated by the router use queue 0 for their time critical packets.
Specifically:

ISO IGRP hellos
ESIS hellos
ISIS hellos
DECnet hellos
SLARP address resolution

Two models
1. Extreme $6,500
2. Warp $10,000.

You are really paying for the software because it is just a rackmount
clone computer running Caldera Linux. Since it is just a software upgrade
a person could get the cheaper one and upgrade anytime.

The Extreme is primarily geared for redundancy and load sharing going out.
The Warp is for coming in and going out. We have the Extreme (cheaper
model).

[7:55918]

We are bringing in a second DS3 line into
our Cisco 7206 v12
router and was
hoping for some general advise.
Our current provider is a 9mbps DS3 from
Genuity. We are
bringing in a
seconds DS3 from PAJO at 6mbps for
redundancy and to bring
the usage down on
the Genuity line.

My question is what commands do I need to
look into when I
have the BGP4
setup on the router in order to handle the
flow of traffic
properly?

90% of our traffic is OUTBOUND (up to the
internet) and we
need to balance
this traffic between the 9mbps and 6mbps
connections. From
what I am told
this won't be an automatic process but
something I will have
to tweak on
occation depending on if traffic demands
change between the
connections.

How am I best going to control this outbound
flow of
traffic? My idea was
that when one connection is using a high % I
can manually
modify a metric of
some sort to make the router believe that
that connection is
not as
preferred as it once was and start sending a
little of the
traffic over the
other connection instead. Am I being
realistic here?

At 08:42 AM 10/23/2002 +, you wrote:
Just commencing study for the CCNP routing exam and as I understand it to

not networks.

A classful routing protocol (such as RIP or IGRP) assumes that everything
else in the routing table has the same subnet mask.

A classless routing protocol (such as RIPv2 and EIGRP) has support for
Variable Length Subnet Masks which can be used for the conservation of IP
addresses and these VLSM's are transmitted with each routng table update.

Perhaps this question would be better suited to the CCNA list.

I would say that routers behave classfully or classlessly based upon the
way they build and interpret their routing tables. Routing protocols
themselves either send mask/prefix information or they do not, however they
have no impact on how the router actually makes forwarding decisions and
are thus neigher classfull or classless themselves.

For example, it is perfectly valid for a classless router to use RIPv1 as a
routing protocol and this router will still behave in a classful
manner. It is similarly possible to have a classful forwarding decisions
made by a router that happens to use OSPF.

Subinterface config. in CAT3550. [7:56174]

2002-10-23 Thread Rajesh Kumar
Hi all,

I am trying to configure a router on a stick configuration - with 26xx
series router's e0/0 port connected to fa0/1 port of CAT3550.

Router's E0 port is configured like this

int e0/1
no shu
no ip address

int e0/1.1
encap isl 20
ip address 192.168.20.1 255.255.255.0

int e0/1.2
encap isl 40
ip address 192.168.40.1 255.255.255.0

When I try to do the same thing on CAT 3550's fa0/1 port, I get an error
message like this :

Configuring IP routing on LAN subinterface is only allowed if that
subinterface is configured as a part of IEEE 802.10 or dot1q or ISL
VLAN.

But nowhere I find the command encap isl to insert this in
the subinterfaces.

Does anyone has anythoughts on this and how to overcome this?

Thanks,
Rajesh

 Do you have any ideas??

What problem are you trying to solve? I'm being dense perhaps, but I think
you will get a better answer if you explain the problem rather than a
potential solution. I know a consultant whose mantra is tell me what, not
how! ;-)

Snapshot routing is a solution for reducing the number of routing updates
that are sent. It works for protocols like RIP, IGRP, and RTMP that send
their entire routing tables (after split horizon) frequently, like every 30
seconds for RIP, every 90 seconds for IGRP, and every 10 seconds for RTMP.

Neither EIGRP nor IS-IS do this. Although EIGRP uses vectors with distance
information, its updates are nonperiodic, partial, and bounded. Nonperiodic
means that updates are sent only when a metric changes rather than at
regular intervals. Partial means that updates include only routes that have
changed, not every entry in the routing table. Bounded means that updates
are sent only to affected routers. These behaviors mean that EIGRP uses very
little bandwidth. However, it does send incessant Hellos (every 5 seconds)
and that is probably what concerns you.

I don't know IS-IS, but EIGRP learns about its neighbors with Hellos. If you
want to reduce traffic and keep a DDR line from coming up just to send
Hellos, you could make the DDR link a passive interface. Under the EIGRP
commands, use the passive-interface dialer0 command or whatever is
appropriate for your config. Then use a static route to make sure the link
does come up when you need to send to the other side. You could still use
EIGRP on either side but make the DDR link passive. That's one way to skin
the cat anyway! ;-)

Can snapshot routing be used for Eigrp? I don't see any

 What can be

Also, I am trying to find out for ISIS? CCO has the

 Can someone advise?

What model 2600 exactly are you using?

If this is not a 2620 or better with a fast ethernet interface it won't
work. The fact that it is a e0/0 and not a fa0/0 tells me that you can't do
it.

This is not true, you can do inter vlan routing with a 2620. See below

Enables inter-VLAN routing via Cisco's Inter-Switch Link (ISL) protocol

Try this:

 description Router on stick (2600)

 switchport trunk encapsulation isl

Off the top of my head, I can't remember if the 3550 only supports dot1q,
or ISL, or both. So if the above doesn't work, use dot1q rather than isl
on the router, and forget the encapsulation command on the switch.

I was thinking of using the appropriate sections of the QoS Configuration
Guide and Multiservice Configuration Guide (IOS 12.1) from the Cisco CD/Web.
I figure they need to be read for the lab anyway (that's why I picked IOS
12.1).

I started reading the QoS guide, and it has theory in the beginning and
config stuff/examples later on. I like it because it's structured/organized
(vs. reading a URL here and a URL there).

But is it enough detail (and the right info.) for the test?

Is this a good idea? Just wondered if others found these references to be
helpful.

- Jennifer

P.S.- The duplex printer is great for this, and Kinko's can put spiral
binding on the printouts - makes it nice and neat :-)

RE: 4006 IP Phone DHCP problem [7:56049]

2002-10-23 Thread Jennifer Mellone
Larry,

I noticed you have the command switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q.

Do you need to configure the interface/port as a trunk when you do the set
port auxiliaryvlan command (catos) or the switch voice vlan command (ios
switch)? According to Cisco's website, you don't for a catos switch, but you
do for an ios switch:

Check this out:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/voice/ip_tele/network/dgcampus.htm#xtocid364019

NO TRUNKING HERE ON CATOS SWITCH:

Voice VLAN Configuration

To configure the VVID from the Catalyst software CLI, use the set port
auxiliaryvlan command. You can use this command to set the VVID on a single
port, on a range of ports, or for an entire module. The following example
shows how to display the command syntax:

Console (enable) set port auxiliaryvlan help

Usage: set port auxiliaryvlan

(vlan + 1..1000)

In the following example, the VVID is set to 222 for ports 2/1 through 2/3.
When the phone powers up, the switch instructs it to register with VLAN 222.

Console (enable) set port auxiliaryvlan 2/1-3 222

Auxiliaryvlan 222 configuration successful.

The following examples show how to display which ports are in which
auxiliary VLAN:

Console show port auxiliaryvlan 222

AuxiliaryVlan auxVlanStatus Mod/Ports

- - -

222 222 1/2,2/1-3

Console show port 2/1

Port AuxiliaryVlan AuxVlan-Status

- - --

2.1 222 active

-

TRUNKING HERE ON IOS SWITCH:

The following is an example of VVID configuration on Catalyst switches
running Cisco IOS at the interface level (for example, Catalyst 3524-PWR and
2900XL):

interface FastEthernet0/1

switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q

switchport trunk native vlan

switchport mode trunk

switchport voice vlan

spanning-tree portfast

switchport mode trust

- Jennifer
PS - are you going to trust the CoS going from phone to switch?

RE: classfull [7:56126]

2002-10-23 Thread James Gosnold
Just commencing study for the CCNP routing exam and as I understand it to
date, the correct terminology is that you have Classful routing protocols
not networks.
