RE: CCIE Lab experience! [7:73263]

2003-07-31 Thread Juan Blanco
Team,
Your opinion is always accepted as a good advice...Question if you are at a
point where
you are running out of time for the lab, what will be more efficient, take
the lab (spend $2000[traveling and the lab fees]) or let your written
qualifications expired and take it again[spend $300]...
Thanks,

Juan

I took the lab recently (before my time ran out) there is a full day of
config to do. Lots of everything some nice little surprises.

A couple of the guys on the same day were caught out by the wording the
way the questions were structured. You have to be able to understand it
fully before you start working.

Otherwise, it's back to the start you've wasted an hour.

As far as I understand, the lab is not 2 days anymore. It is only one day.
And they don't break things and have you find and fix them. You just have
to configure the network correctly and answer some questions. You could
pass the lab by just reading books, but you'd have to have a pretty special
ability to understand things without actually configuring them on a real
router.

Subject: CCIE Lab experience! [7:73263]

Hi there,

I have finished my CCNP exam.

Well, I live in Sydney, Australia and I still could not find job. I wish to
carry on with CCIE. I do not have problem with passing writing CCIE exam,
but
what about practical exam of 2 days duration. I have found some programs on
the net. But is it enough to pass without practice. I have passed my CCNP by
only reading books and downloading simulation programs.

Can somebody give me advice whether I could carry on without real hand on
experince?

Is there some way to volonteer to work for free?

Is there some way to get free CCIE Lab experience?

Thanks in advance

   Hey Everyone,

We will be moving the mailing list function to a new
 server. If you are
currently receiving this list via e-mail, you will be
 affected. This
has been planned for some time now but we need to move
 faster then I
would like. I just received a bill from our co-location
 facility for
the GroupStudy service and let's just put it this way, in
 most locations
rent on a two bedroom apartment is less expensive. So we
 need to try
and reduce our bandwidth usage (an eventually find another
 co-location
   facility).

It has been quite clear for some time now that the
 GroupStudy server
needs help. We are dropping an unacceptable number of
 messages (I
personally have had five in a row discarded) and the
 messages that make
it take a random amount of time to propagate. To fix this,
 I have
purchased a new server and bandwidth (at a lower cost
 facility). We
will be migrating to the new server in the next few days.
 Once the move
is complete we will cut over to the new server.

But wait it gets better .. We are dumping majordomo as our
 list
software! Our new software will allow you to change a
 number of
options. For example you will be able to suspend
 distribution of the
e-mails, receive e-mails in digest format, change your
 e-mail address,
   etc.

You will receive a welcome message with your account
 information. The

message will contain your username/password, instructions
 on how to
login to the server, and instructions on how to
 unsubscribe. Please
save this e-mail for future reference. It is also a good
 idea to login
to the server and set your password to something more
 memorable then the
   random password given.

If you stop receiving e-mails from the list after the
 change, please
send me an e-mail (after verifying it is not a problem at
 your end such
   as misconfigured anti-spam software etc.).

   Take care,

Another thing that is very important and critical with redistribution is the

Chuck,
My first thought is what does the sh ip bgp for the
routes that does not show up in BGP indicate.

I believe there is a requirement not to disable sync which suggest that
the routes not being added to the BGP, isn't sync'd with the IGP. Does any
of this have route information being propagated from an IBGP neighbor.

 everything appears to be correct.

So why is it that half my OSPF routes do not show up in the BGP table???

RE: Frame-relay on a coffee break... [7:66509]

2003-03-30 Thread Juan Blanco
Yes, I have see this behavior many times and the key answer give it enough
time,
the problem is if you start making changes and still it does not works
because frame
needs time be on sync, normally what I do is configure it and keep making
other configurations
and them come back to it and the link is working...

Subject: Frame-relay on a coffee break... [7:66509]

Would be nice to hear if anyone has encountered similars problem and has any
ideas how to get past some of the sometimes animal behaviour of frame-relay.

Setting up a frame-relay cloud; Router A needs to connect to Router B, DLCIs
are given. Disable inverse-arp and install frame-relay map statements and
vice versa. Router A tries to ping to Router B, nothing, dead. Had a quick
look at the DLCIs coming into the interface - sure enough, the DLCI number
is there, both sides see their respective DLCIs. So I enable inverse-arp
and take out the map statements. Ping Router B and yes it sees it, so the
link and cables are fine. Clear inarp cache and install map statements,
disable inarp. Nothing Double check the frame switch, looks ok.
Disable inarp and reboot the Router. Install map statements, ping Router B,
nothing. Ping again, nothing, wait, nothing. Go have a cup of coffee, come
back 20 minutes later. Ping Router B, it working.
So, now one hour wasted on one pvc...
Is there something or some sequence that I missed here? I have done loads of
frame-relay labs and seldom have problems. But twice now frame-relay decides
it is on its own coffee break. For no apparent reason. I have also heard of
DLCIs leaking into other interfaces and neighbour statements disappearing.
I have also seen a similar situation where you write erase a stubborn router
and copy the same config back on and it works.
Any tips or forced workarounds?

I would suggest that you upgrade the IOS on this particular router.

Also, does it happens the same if you ping from the other router ?

CCIE [7:65426]

2003-03-14 Thread Juan Blanco
Team,
I got this from a friend but I not sure if you have seen this or not but
only someone pursuing the CCIE would laugh at it!!
In the course of my day-to-day work, people ask me what is a CCIE? I thought
about this for some time. I wrote some notes. And this is what I came up
with:
I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling 8 foot computer racks and charming
magnetic security cardswipes. I have been known to remodel SME networks on
my lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of capital
deployment, reliability and performance. I translate technobabble for
Management, I write award-winning technical presentations and deliver them
better than an American president announcing tax cuts.
I can recite complete chapters of the Cisco Documentation CD, backwards and,
with little effort and at the same time, perform decimal to binary
conversion for very large numbers.
I woo women with my sensuous and godlike MIDI playing on a notebook. I can
pilot computer trolleys up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I can
rack Cisco gear faster than Arnold Schwarznegger can bench press. I am an
expert in network diagramming tools, a veteran in web surfing, and know the
Cisco Web Site better than I know my own family.
Just to keep it interesting, I occasionally tread water for three days while
programming Cisco practice labs. I manage time efficiently and can complete
a timesheet every week. In addition, I know the part number for every Cisco
router cable.
Using only a Chinese AC power cord and a large glass of water, I once
single-handedly rebuilt the network core of major co-location facility after
the roof fell in. I used to play games, but now it's serious. I am the
subject of numerous urban myths and I am the creator of a few as well. When
I'm bored, I test fiber optic cable, calculate power loss sums on UTP and
the minimum refraction index for 50 micron multimode fiber. I mean, what IS
the point of it ?
I understand that DLSW and Source Route Translational Bridging actually has
a reason for existence. It's not just IBM playing a practical joke. Really.
I enjoy urban guerilla activities. I can build a 802.11b parabolic dish
antennae using surplus antennae from defunct satellite companies and a juice
can. It has better performance than off the shelf products. I think that
having a wind generator and solar array as power backup for my practice lab
is not only responsible preparation, it's environmentally friendly too. On
Wednesdays, after work, I repair old monitors free of charge for my local
charity.
I know that canonical to non-canonical conversion is not about religion,
it's about ART.
Microsoft geeks worldwide swoon over my original line of corduroy evening
wear, which I don't understand -- it was supposed to be funny. I don't
perspire. I am a private citizen, yet I receive fan mail. I have been caller
number ten and have won the cash jackpot.
I can speak IPX NLSP, AppleTalk, ATM PVC, QoS, and BGP to name a few, and
redistribute routes at will, with filtering, using non contiguous masks. I
install IPV6 on customer sites whenever I can, just so I can play with it.
Same for OSPF NSSA. Children trust me.
I can hurl squishy giveaway tradeshow toys at sales personnel with stunning
accuracy, and ensure that the dweeb from administration gets the blame. I
have charisma beyond normal mortals; if I didn't the boss would have sent
the other guy to this exam.
I once read Cisco Quality of Service, Caslow Bridges and Routers 2nd Ed, and
Jeff Doyles' Routing TCP/IP Vol2 in one day, and still had time to do
practice on a Frame Relay multipoint network, using OSPF and IGRP, split
horizon, route maps and ISDN. I know the exact location of every food item
in the supermarket and I use a link state protocol to calculate the shortest
path to get there.
I have performed several covert operations with the CIA. It was kind of fun
having them follow me around. I know that security and privacy is a
phantasm-like myth created by security companies to extract money from IT
Managers who can't implement a decent security policy. But it's great fun to
play with.
I sleep once a week; when I do sleep, I sleep in a chair. I know exactly how
much coffee my body will take to sustain me at peak function. While on
vacation, I successfully negotiated with the hotel to fix their network in
return for free accommodation. The laws of society do not apply to me.
I balance, I weave, I dodge, I frolic, and my bills are all paid. On
weekends, to let off steam, I participate in full-contact tech stock day
trading. Years ago I discovered the meaning of life but forgot to write it
down.
I can originate default routes, conditionally, after redistributing from a
classful distance vector protocol. I have made extraordinary four course
meals using my Cisco 7500 lab router as a stove (after all its runs all the
time anyway).
I breed prizewinning idioms. Fox Mulder knows my phone number. I have spoken
with Elvis.

BTW Jeff Doyle Volume II looks like the continuation of Solie Book (very

I've waffled on this one before. But lately I've been spending more time
with Soltie ( CCIE Practical Studies, Volume 1 )

Previously, I've said the jury is still out on this one.

Now that I've given Mr. Soltie his due, I am finding this is a very good
book, and well worth considering when choosing CCIE prep books.

In fact, if I dare say so, I am finding that Mr. Soltie is much more
effective than is Mr. Caslow.

Anyone else finding the same?

Good night, everyone.

been fooling around with the B-Link 2 that a particular someone ( whose name
is not supposed to be mentioned here on this list ) sells at what seems to
be a reasonable price.

not looking for specific answers - just a general question - ever get both B
channels to come up? just a yes or no.

( ISDN is not my strongest point, but when working with unfamiliar
equipment, it helps to know the high level answer so I know whether or not
to go back to the seller or hit the books a little harder. )

Thanks

2003-03-08 Thread Juan Blanco
Al you need to do is the following assumming that you want to change the
vlan1 to vlan17:

execute the command vlan database
create vlan17 and give a name to it(optional)
assign the ip address to vlan17
assign vlan17 to any port that you want to be use with it

Hope the above helps...

This may be a stupid question, but after searching Cisco's site and the
groupstudy archives for an answer, and not finding anything, I figured I'd
ask. What command will allow me to change the default management vlan from
vlan 1 to any other vlan?? I also understand this will negatively affect
other protocols being sourced from the management vlan, any comments, ideas?
Thanks in advance, Jason

Tunde,
The minimum will be two routers (2600), two FXS and two VNM(this is where
you insert the FXS). This will allow you to
have a point to point voice connectivity

 Hi Kris,

Try Configuring Cisco Voice Over IP, Second Edition by Callisma (Various
 Authors).

Below is the URL to view the book's info. I am currently reading it. It
has
lots of great information on VoIP matters.

In fact, Chapter 4 explains what exactly FXS, FXO or EM interface ports
do.

 Everyone,

I am seeking a recommendation on a voip book, preferably something that
explains the different types of technologies and how they can be applied
'in the real world'. Right now, we are doing some very rudimentary voip
stuff with a variety of routers, 1760, 2600, and a 3600 seriers which is
 connected to a pri.

We have no call manager (yet), so we have a bunch of dial-peer groups set
up
on all our routers to interconnect the remote offices. All offices have
their own pbx's of different types, and most of the routers at the remote
locations have the vic fxs cards.

I feel like this is a good opportunity for me to learn a great deal, but I
want to make sure that I REALLY understand what I am learning. And right
now, for example, I have no idea what the difference is between an FXS
card
and an EM card. I'm starting to feel a bit like the village voip idiot,
and
the tons of docs I've read on the cisco web site do not seem to be
helping.

Any recommendations will be highly appreciated.

 Thanks,
 Kris

his kindness of making this device available to me behind the DMZ. I have
full access to it, I am able to connect to it via my browser or via telnet
without problem, very easy to configure but my dilemma is the following:
According to Cisco documentation I should be able to have access to a CLI
and do all my configuration this way as well but I don't see to be able to
do this any ideas what I have to do in order for me to have full access to
the CLI

For those of your trying to assign an Ip address to a virtual-tokenR, the

Well, I least I could have it available in one of my routers.

FOR A TEST OR LAB ENVIRONMENT ONLY!-
If you want to run Call Manager on a test server, you can install windows
2000 (from microsoft cds) and add this key to the registry. This will allow
you to install CM.

paste these lines into a text file, save is as makemcs.reg and double click
it. This will create the key in the registry.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECisco SystemsModel]
Hardware=MCS7835
Memory=1024

this has worked for me

It's annoying because when i am trying to get out all the way from the

which I don't want. I forgot to chose K - for Command Line Interface in
the beginning instead of M - for menus. Hope, you can help me on this.
Thanks much.

2002-12-27 Thread Juan Blanco
Team,
I want to thanks God, San Lazaro, My family and all members of this group. I
took today the last exam (CIPT) for the
Cisco IP Telephony Support Specialist. This certification is not that easy,
it requires a lot of reading, practicing and
hands on. The following is what I used to prepare for each test. All books
for each test are not enough, you really have
dig very deep down on the Cisco Web site for many PDF's and others links as
well. The most difficult test was the Cvoice (very long test and the score
to pass is very but very high), the easy was the CIPT (because the
foundation from the other
two test dqos and cvoice)

DQoS 9E0-601
DQoS is all QoS, pretty straight forward. Hands on experience helped quite a
bit. There is a QoS book from Cisco Press, the book is a few years old and
is poorly layed out. The IOS 12.2 QoS guide follows the exam blueprint
pretty closely and is a great reference.

Be aware that for this kind of certification you need to find as many pdfs
as possible related to the topic because the technology is still going
trough many changes The order of taking the test I recommend is the
following:
DQoS --- CVOICE --- CIPT.

The book Integrating Voice and Data Networks by Scott Keagy is a most, I
used this book for all test as a reference and it is a very good book, any
person who is really interesting on Voice/Data need to have this book.

Well now to start using the lab, keeping reading more pdfs, books and
anything else that I could get my hands on for the next
seven months every day in order for me to give a shoot at the beast of the
beast CCIE LAB (what a animal).

I wish a happy holidays and a NEW YEAR to every one in this group.

PHD/MS OR CCIE.....OR MAYBE BOTH...IT IS UP TO YOUR DREAMS..... [7:59519]

2002-12-19 Thread Juan Blanco
Team,
I think is time to shift gears...but I will give my two cents...
The question isWhat do you want to do for the rest of your life..Do
you want to be the Boss or you want to be boss around...
IMO a PHD/MS is a LIFE TIME investment that any person will have for the
rest of his/her life, it is the best investment a person can make. It does
not matter where
you go (any country) your title will still validwho cares how old you
become your title will still valid

Any certification is valid and valuable as long as the Technology or product
related to that certification is valid..I considered a CCIE the PHD/MS
of networking and
the reason is because you have to learn many technology and understand it
very well in order for you to pass the written and them you have to spend at
least 4 hours a
day in for a very long timer in order for you to put to practice all the
theory that learn and the take the lab (which most people does not make it
the first time). It sound like the same path to become a CCIE is need to
become a PHD/MS. If CCIE were that easy why we don't have to many CCIE's
available is the same thing with a PHD/MS why we don't have many peoples
with a PHD/MS.

Finally, I will say that any person should have a least BS, and then any
certification.particular a CCIE...I believe that CISCO has done a
great job with the CCIE program and they should continue to improve it for
the better.

Can someone reccomend a good back that deals with Call Manager setup and IP
Phones. I keep finding these VOIP books (Caputo, etc.), but all they talk
about is routers, FXS and FXO, H323, yadayadayada. I know all that. I know
about RSVP, RTP, QOS, signaling. I did the CCNP Voice thing a few years ago.

I need to know how to set up Call Manager and how to build a IP Phone
network (7960's) through powered line cards on 4000's and 6000's. How do the
the 7960's work? I know they are DHCP and then they download .cnf file from
TFTP, then register with Call Manager. Got that from CCO but Ineed more
detail. Setting up seperate VLANs for the phone and the data port. Does
anyone even deploy VOIP through routers anymore, except to tie into a PBX or
voice mail?

I just received another VOIP book I ordered from Amazon and its the same ole
stuff with no Call Manager, IP Phones, or Catalyst 4000 and 6000. Just the
same ole CCNP test stuff. Any reccomendations are greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

From the Cisco URL they have revised and named it as Enterprise Voice Over

get Specialized.

Hopefully you can let me know the passing marks and time needed for the

Appreciate anyone out there can provide me other valuable information so

In the words of the esteemed Maxwell Smart, missed it by that much.

Good test. Liked it a lot. Can't say much about the content, obviously.

The 3550's were there. I think that those who have expressed reservations
about this will find little to worry about. The Lab writers did a pretty
good job of integrating the devices into the rack and the exam.

I think I was more surprised by what I did NOT see than by what I did see.
Wish I could say more.

There were the usual off the wall requirements. I knew the names, or had
heard of the technology, but had never practiced it. Here's where the doc CD
came in handy. It was very easy to locate the information and do the
required configuration.

I did have one very odd problem I was unable to solve. My own practice, not
to mention the doc CD configuration guide, told me that a particular
configuration should have worked. But it didn't. I've mocked up the
configuration here at home, and it took a total of 10 minutes to start from
a router with no configuration and have it up and running correctly. But in
the Lab it just would not work. I have an inquiry in to the CCIE Lab folks,
asking them to check the rack. I believe there is a physical problem,
although for the life of me I cannot come up with a plausible explanation as
to why. I would get more specific, except this would be a direct violation
of NDA. I will say that anyone who sits at rack 12 in San Jose - if you are
absolutely certain your configuration is correct, tell the proctor. I
hesitated to do so, and I paid the price. You'll know when you see it ;-)

I did one stupid thing, and the more I think about it, I should have
corrected it immediately when I discovered it. When I first created my
notepad file with my alias commands, I stupidly did most of them as alias
configure rather than alias exec Given that the lab is graded pretty much
by scripts, I have this bad feeling that this mistake may have interfered
with the operation of some of those scripts, meaning that I was not given
credit for successfully completed tasks just because the script was unable
to function properly.

You are no longer given a point total in your report. When I counted up
points in the late afternoon, I thought I had between 60 and 70. I had no
reachability problems, save to one interface, and that interface had nothing
depending upon it. I knew I didn't have enough points to pass, but I thought
I was close. To judge from my score report, the final total was maybe 35-45
depending. As those of you who have been there know, the dependings will
kill you every time. :-)

I can say I had a lot of fun doing this test. That's probably part of the
reason I failed - I'm having too much fun. I can also say I'm hot to trot. I
can taste it. I'm yay close to passing, and I want back in as soon as I can
get there. You can bet I'm checking CCO regularly for those open dates.

Afterwards, I had the pleasure of hooking up with groupstudy regular Larry
Letterman. Larry - thanks for the tour - it was impressive. I was reminded
of exactly why I got into the tech business in the first place - the desire
to do things like you are doing, important things, things that keep
businesses competitive. You're doing a great job and I appreciate your
taking some time to show me what you're working on.

well, another time.

as a low price PBX that I could used on my lab in addition to two cisco7910

and simulations in order for me to fully understand and learn IP Telephony
without having to practice on a live network.

Subject: VoIP Question AGAIN... [7:57747]

Second call for this one. I never received any answers to my question. I
want to know how to setup the link between the VoIP phones and the FXO's.
Basically a dialplan, but how do I route inbound calls from the PSTN to
the VoIP phones? And how do I route outbound calls from the VoIP phones
over
the FXO to the PSTN? I would like to avoid a system that uses 9 to dial
an outside line. I want to do direct dialing to the PSTN without
any special steps.

Thanks,
Andrew

found how to configure everything for phone connection and FXO

However I haven't found out how to configure dialplans to dial the outside

VoIP phones and all other numbers are outside PSTN phone numbers. And
another question that I haven't found is how to link inbound calls from

555-1234 as the other line on my phones. I haven't found how to map the

2002-11-15 Thread Juan Blanco
Neil,
I think that you can in fact connect a key sytem to a FXS port. If you have
the book
Cisco Voice Over Frame relay, ATM and IP in page 129 figure 5-13 it shows
the
connection of a a Key system via a FXS. Do a search on cisco web for Key
System and
you will see a few examples.

How can you interface the FXS to the key system.I mean FXS provides

Can anyone explain.

Hi all,

I took my Security lab in Brussels on October 17th. I
received an email notification the next day
congratulating me on passing. I flew back to the USA
and told everyone and we celebrated and had a grand
old time. My company made a big deal out of me being
their first double CCIE and all that.
Then a few days later I checked on the website and it
said I failed. So I sent Cisco an email asking WTF?!
Nothing for two days. So I sent them another email.
Finally they wrote back and said, Oh, it was a bug in
our email system. Sorry for any confusion.
What kind of crap with that? I had to go back and
explain to everyone that I had actually failed. What
if I had received gifts/bonuses/job offers because of
my passing? Plus I think their attitude is totally
unacceptable. No real apology. And how come I had to
find it out? If they knew it was a bug they should
have contacted me.
Anyway, just wanted to let some bitter steam off my
chest. Next time you get an email saying you passed...
better check twice.

Peter,
Very well put, I think that you should try to go for the VOICE-Support
certification, the material is very helpful for
your preparation to the lab (eventually when you have a job or the money to
do it), the reason is because you will have to do some QOS and VOICE as well
in the lab but in addition to what I said before learning QOS is really
great and very but very helpful. Yes not having a job really sucks but
believe it or not there are many people out there with the same level of

Maximums,
Classification is the ability to identify and group specific packets(source
and destination ip address..or
source and destination UDP port number). After the packet has been
classified then you Mark it by setting bits in the IP header(DSCP, IP

As of this morning, I have been able to verify the following resources for
Cisco 3550 study and practice. By Monday, not only will these switches be in
the CCIE Lab, but test takers will be responsible for all L2 and L3
functionality, including things like VLAN tunneling, BGP, and a wealth of
other things. This otter be fun!

1) Configuration guides and command references on CCO
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c3550/12111ea1/index.htm
watch the wrap

2) NLI ( www.ccbootcamp.com ) I spoke to Mark Russell. Somewhere on the site
there is a free white paper covering 3550 basics. To judge from the web
site, it appears that 4 of the 5 rental racks have 3550's in them. Mark also
said that his package of updated and new scenarios is due real soon now
I'd like to say in a couple of weeks, but I don't remember if that's exactly
what Mark said.

3) IPExpert ( www.ipexpert.net ) has a new study guide out, which includes
scenarios with the 3550. The web site says that there are 3550's in the
rental racks. ( The diagram needs to be updated. )

4) Hello Computers ( www.hellocomputers.com ) has rental racks that include
3550's. They also sell a Lab study book with 24 scenarios and an optional
rack access purchase, including consulting with a CCIE

5) There are any number of e - bay auctions of rack rentals. rack rental
seems to be a going concern these days.

Team,
This morning I was able to pass the DQoS test, wow...what a rideThe test
is very hard if you don't have
the Course Book and the reason is because all the information need for the
test is very well put and organized by the course. All the information
required for the test is on Cisco's web but is very hard to find it, the
test follow the blueprint by the book. I want to give my special thanks to
Chuck Larrieu (The Long and Winding Road) for his support. I really
recommend this test for those who are in the process of taking the lab. The
following link will take you where you can
find all the information need for this test except the Course Book (fully
recommended). Well now to get back to the books for the CVOICE (another
animal) test.

A good starting point for the QoS on CCO is the following:

Allen,
I agree with you completed, I will say that 99.99% of the time 10mbps for
end stations is fine, if you have some users that may need more than 10mbps
then
you need to really study and fully understand the type of traffic is being
generated
my these users and then you may have to take a different approach.

as a rule of thumb 10mbps ethernet to the user end station is fine for
typical user applications in businesses where the network plant is
switched - exchange, file sharing, etc. servers on 100mbps. i'm told that
more data intensive applications may require 100mbps ethernet to the
desktop, but i haven't run into any yet.

that said, before making any design decisions first understand the nature of
the applications and the kind of traffic they generate. then apply to your
proposed physical layout.  it is similar to the primary rule of woodworking;
measure twice, cut once.

Are you sure it's a 16 Mbps MAU? Try setting the speed to 4 Mbps with the
ring-speed command. If that doesn't work, try hardcoding it back to 16 Mbps.

Other than that, it's time for the swap 'til you drop troubleshooting
methodology.

Try a different:
cable
router interface
MAU

Do you hear a click after a few seconds when the interface tries to come up?
That's the relay opening. If you don't hear it, then I would suspect bad
hardware or hardware that's in a weird state. Years ago, Token Ring
troubleshooters carried around a little reset tool, but I haven't seen one
of those in years. The tool reset the port on MAUs. Mabye there's some other
way to do that on your SMC MAU. Is there a reset button or anything?

A couple years ago there was a discussion on Group Study regarding the same
MAU, and the resolution I think was that the MAU was bad.

Yes, I just took (today in fact) the R/S written and it was a nightmare. I
know that I can't speak for all recent test takers as I am sure all of our
exams are somewhat different, however, I can tell you one key thing based
off of the exam that I took:

KNOW MULTICASTING AND MPLS!!

Be prepared to FULLY understand concepts, fundamentals, designs, best
practices, troubleshooting regarding multicasting topics such as IGMP (v1
v2 and their differences), CGMP, DVMRP, PIM (PIM-DM PIM-SM) as well as
MPLS architectures and implementation. I would say that close to 1/3 of my
exam was on multicasting and MPLS alone. I thought that I had the wrong
test as most exam study guides seem to show very little emphasis on these
areas. I studied my ass off (6 months prep) for this as my current CCNP
certification runs out next year and I want to get the big upgrade.
Anyway, I read (cover to cover) these books in preparation for taking the
CCIE R/S written:

McGraw Hill All-In-One CCIE Lab Study Guide
Cisco Press Internet Routing Architectures
Cisco Press CCIE Professional Development: Routing TCP/IP Volume I
Cisco Press CCIE Professional Development: Routing TCP/IP Volume II
Cisco Press CCIE Professional Development: Cisco LAN Switching
Cisco Press CCIE Practical Studies Volume I
Cisco Press Routing and Switching Exam Certification Guide
Addison-Wesley Interconnections Second Ed (Perlman)
Various RFCs and a sh*load of configuration documents from Cisco's website

With the exception of Jeff Doyle in Routing TCP/IP Volume II, none of the
CCIE development or study guides provide much information on these areas.
This is where I got destroyed on the test. I put most of my focus on areas
such as routing protocols (EGPs IGPs), wireless networks, LANs/WANs
(switching routing), QOS, access-lists, traffic management... (you get the
idea). Don't be fooled by the amount of focus on multicasting or MPLS that
you see in some of these books on the market (such as the list above).
Before taking this test, I should have read (until I was blue in the face)
Cisco Press MPLS VPN Architectures and Interdomain Multicast Solutions
Guide. You can really see Cisco emphasizing the AVVID architecture in this
certification. I was praying for questions on issues such as wireless LANs,
ISDN, BGP or ATM because it was what I had studied and practiced
(extensively) on in my home lab (not to mention paid for); but they never
came (I didn't get one single question on OSPF or EIGRP on the whole damn
exam). I drove me nuts and to add insult to injury, they used every acronym
in the book regarding these multicasting technologies.

Anyway my suggestion is, and this just based on my experience with the test
today and may not reflect all other test takers, study and be well prepared
to address complex issues regarding MPLS, multicasting, and multiservice. I
am scheduling the test again in a month or so as this will give me some time
to improve on these areas. Good luck!

Regards,
Jim

HUH!?!?! What does ICMP have to do with Telnet or the PDM??

Mindiani- To answer your question, yes there is an alleged way of doing
what you're wanting to do. I have not done it myself yet, but there is
an example on CCO of how to do such a configuration.

Pad Pad Pad http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/110/pdm_vpntun.html

For Telnet, as far as I know, there isn't a way to telnet to the PIX
from the outside- it's considered a security risk by the firewall group
at Cisco, so they don't allow for it.

If you want to telnet to the PIX, create a rule on the PIX that allows
your specific Internet Host to connect to a telnet device such as a
Switch or a Unix box (or even the Telnet Server on Win2K if I dare
suggest it), and then hit the PIX from that telnet host. Be sure and
configure the PIX with the telnet 'inside-host-ip' 255.255.255.255
inside command.

Good luck, and let us know how you do!

VPN's can be achieved with key's configured in the crypto maps in IOS, but
what if someone compromises the key on the IOS. I, or my client, if we

What options do you recommend for using certificate servers to distribute

easier to just have the client update the key's once a month via

I've done this before, and it's not like it's real tough, but.

I am trying to upgrade my IOS images. Neither the Router Software Loader,
not the good old copy tftp: flash: is working.

RSL gives me some odd message

the copy function never asks if I want to erase the current image on the
flash - it just starts to copy, then stops, with a message that there is not
enough rook on the destination device.

sample output of my process:

Router_7#copy tftp flash:
   NOTICE
Flash load helper v1.0
This process will accept the copy options and then terminate
the current system image to use the ROM based image for the copy.
Routing functionality will not be available during that time.
If you are logged in via telnet, this connection will terminate.
Users with console access can see the results of the copy operation.

As you can see - no asking to erase. I suspect this is a problem with the
particular image. I had no problem upgrading a different router with a
different image. Unfortunately, just about all my routers have this
identical image in place.

Anyone seen this? got a fix?

CCO searches have not been regarding. TAC won't talk to me even though I
work for a major partner. Apparently my management made some procedural
changes, and I can't locate anyone internally who can help me out. They
apparently have lives :-

thanks much

 All,
I was wondering if anyone has a single 4mb Flash stick for a 4700 that
they'd like to sell. I only need one, as the router has a singe 4 mb
stick
in it now, and an empty slot for a second. I'm trying not to buy an 8mb
upgrade kit, because I'm going to get a single 8mb stick, and then have
the
existing 4mb stick laying around, as Cisco's doc's say that the two slots
must contain the same size sticks. 8mb will allow me to run the IP PLUS /
IPSEC 56 IOS (12.1.14), but anything heavier and I'd have to move to 16
Mb,
which I'm not convinced at this point I need to do.

So, if anyone has a singe 4 Mb flash stick laying around collecting dust,
 let me know.  Thanks.

the
ISDN ports on the 2503s to the simulator. If that's the case, then yes,
that's all you need to connect the simulator to your router. I've had a

Security policy are for internal use and each security policy varies from
company to company. If you do
a search on the net for security policy) you will find plenty of
information that will help you to accomplish
your goal. There is a lot of information on the Cisco web site, A good
example is available in the book Managing Cisco Network Security.

what to put ???? [7:51574]

Team,
What do you put on your resume when you pass any one test of the Security
Specialization or the Voice Track.

For example:
If you pass the MCNS test you should put the following:
Cisco Certified Network Professional - Security Specialization (MCNS)

If you pass the CVOICE test you should put the following:
Cisco Certified Network Professional - Voice Specialization (CVOICE)

I have seem some people that they have on their resume CSS1 (how do you
translate this symbol) - Does it means a person
that took the four security test.

BGP is expected to be released real soon now, but according to Cisco

 Limitations
as to the number of routes processed and stored, for example ( due to the
physical limitations of the switch ) I.e. don't expect to get full BGP

Jeff,
Give us a break, on this group we are very negative to this type of
behaviors, I just went and spent $120 in two books, I did not go to the
movies, I did not go outI just went and bought the books because I need
them, like myself most of the people in this group do the same thing, they
sacrificed them self and buy whatever is require to learn the technology
which will help them to move up to new levels, the same way the authors of
many books whom worked very hard to put together a book that will help
everyone. My advise to you is, in this field you can't be worried about how
much a book cost. This is very costly field, very costly my wife is ready
give the divorced and kick me out the house with my rack, routers, switches
and course many, many books...

Good luck in getting your BSCN'S PDF..

RE: Anyone using Cisco ACS? [7:49602]

2002-07-25 Thread Juan Blanco

Well, you can use ACS or a Radius Server, ACS is great, it give you a lot of
options of how to control access to your equipment, you can use it's own
database for users, or you can integrate it with Windows NT... That is what
most ISP use, you can have it in Solaris or NT...I think Cisco can do a
better job with the documentation. You can download a 90 days evaluation
copy which has all the functionalities.

my two cents.

Is anyone using Cisco Secure Access Control Server and if so, how do you
like it? I am looking for something to work with PIX VPN, RSA SecurID key

make sure I'm not rush into something that isn't going to work well. The
main thing I need for VPN is the ability to setup users and give them access

RE: Here we go again ( Pix 515) [7:49492]

2002-07-25 Thread Juan Blanco

Team,
The way I see it, dhcp on the firewall is only for small number of users,
when it comes to mid-size-up network you don't want to use a firewall for a
DHCPCan you see an NT administrator making changes in your firewall
because he/she is having problems with DHCP(This network will be
available to hackers in the Theater near You)

My two cents.

What's everybody's view on using the Pix as a DHCP server?

I used it once, only because after arriving on site to install the Pix the
customer mentioned that his old Firewall was doing DHCP and he had no plans
to do it on anything else.
Seemed to go fine, but would like to know if people have come across
limitations/issues.

I tend to agree with the view Right box for the job, i.e. don't make the
Pix do things it's not made for, but if pushed into the situation, how does
it compare.

Cheers,

Gaz

Man, you aren't asking much, are you? ;-)

Ok, here's the order I'd do things in...

First things first, get that firewall in place. You don't list what
their
internet connectivity is, but if they bought a PIX, it's safe to assume
  that
they have a persistent connection, and that being true, they're really
hanging it out there for someone to cut off, so to speak. Network
security
is always a primary concern, and the firewall won't take alot of time
to
  set
up. Not setting it up could be very costly. If they already have a
light(er)-weight firewall like a Linux host running IP chains or IP
tables,
replacing this first will save your users down-time later because you
can
pre-configure your internet rulebase/access in preparation for your
private
  addressing.

Next, I'd do the DHCP and Private Addressing. These go hand in hand,
and
since your firewall is now in place, you can do the NAT/PAT
translations
as
needed and not have to rethink these later.

Third, get Exchange up and running. If it's going on a different
system
than Quick mail is running on, great! Now you can get them running in
parallel, and move users accounts over one at a time or in batches.
There
are probably tools out there to do the mailbox format conversion. Now
that
your network is secure at layer3/4, you can focus on the nitty-gritty
of
  the
user data. (Oh yeah, don't forget that backup!!!)

  It's a 10,000 foot view, but that's how I'd do it. I'm not really a
MAC
guy, but I'd venture a guess that most or all of your MAC's run TCP/IP
and
support DHCP, so from an L3/4 standpoint, they're really no different
than
  your PC's.

When doing multiple projects like this, I tend to work along the OSI
model.
If the wiring is horrible, or the NIC's are all old 10Base2 nics and
have
transceivers to hook them to your BaseT network, take care of the layer
1
stuff first. Next, if the network is all unmanaged hubs, and your
network
is one gigantic broadcast domain, start installing switches to quiet
down
the network. Next, get VLANs/routing/security in place for Layer3/4.
  Next,
work on the upper layers where all of your apps and data live and
talk.
  Just my $0.02 worth.

firewall to any ip on the Internet but I am not able to ping from any PC on
my LAN to any ip on the Internet, Be aware that this id the first time I am
using a Cisco Firewall, This morning I got the book Cisco Secure PIX
Firewall. Your help is very appreciated as always...Another question,
The ios on this baby is the same on the high end firewalls, If I am able to
learn as much as my brain can take will I be able to configure a high-end
pix and feel comfortable.

Thanks, (What I am doing wrong..)
