AW: 2950 with EMI any good for studying? [7:66106]

2003-03-25 Thread Stuart Laubstein
Here are a couple of good links. The Certif**zone has some excellent
labs for the 3550 and "The long and Winding Road" had an excellent config
email in jan or feb--if you cannot find it in the archives I may still have
it somewhere. Good luck on the test

Betreff: 2950 with EMI any good for studying? [7:66106]

S! ALL!

I am recieving 2 2950's (WS-2950T-24 as I recall) with the EMI for work at
the end of this week. Are they comparable to the 3550 vis MLS capabilities?
I need to bone up on the uses of the 3550 vis the CCIE Lab (I take the lab
on 4/6 ) and I am hoping these 2950's will do the job.

Also...any good links on configuring 3550 would be GREATLY appreciated.

Prayers for me would not be refused either :)

S! (Salute!)

isdn guard-timer [7:61381]

2003-01-20 Thread Stuart Laubstein
I am configuring a cisco 801 for my lab and I have the " isdn guard-timer
0 on-expiry accept" under my bri 0. I have been checking cco and they
mention how to get rid of it using the no call guard-timer command. Well
this has not worked and I cannot seem to find a no isdn guard-timer command
or anything that will do it. Can anyone suggest how i might remove this
line-- I am running 12.0(7)XV on the 801. I do not think the line is having
any effect on the routers operation it just bothers me that I can install
something and cannot seem to get rid of it.

thanks

AW: Subnet question [7:60711]

2003-01-09 Thread Stuart Laubstein
Well we are using vlans to separate our subnets--A floor is a subnet. If a
pc is moved to the new subnet it will not be able to connect as its ip
address will not match the vlan. But you could also set up port security to
prevent a pc from being able to access the net. This all assume that your
catalysts are capable of running vlans of course.

Betreff: Subnet question [7:60711]

This might be a very elementary question for some of you guys but I would
appreciate the answer.

If an office which has 3 different floors and has Cisco routers and catalyst
switches and windows environment. We need to configure it in such a way that
each floor is on its own subnet for example

floor1 100.10.1.0
floor2 100.10.2.0
floor3 100.10.3.0

Also if a computer which has IP address in subnet 100.10.1.0 is moved from
floor 1 to floor 2, it should not communicate with the network unless its IP
address is changed to one in 100.10.2.0 subnet.

How it can be accomplished?

Thank you
Nitin

2002-12-17 Thread Stuart Laubstein
David, I do not think port security is turned on but I will check it out.
You understood my questions but I will be wanting to specify multiple ports
as well--

for instance

Router(config)# monitor session 1 source interface fastethernet 4/3 would
monitor port 3 on module 4 but how could i do all the ports on module 4--ie
would Router(config)# monitor session 1 source interface fastethernet 5/

Router(config)# monitor session 1 source interface fastethernet 4/3-12
work or not?

It's just like copying a file

"copy source destination"

"span source destination"

the sniffer gets attatched to the second port you specified . Also, your
gonna have to make sure you have port security off. if I misunderstood your
question, let me know.

AW: IGRP as proprietary? [7:57603]

2002-11-18 Thread Stuart Laubstein
I always thought that EIGRP was cisco proprietary but IGRP was not. I did
find the below on the ietf site which makes me think that at least in 96 it
was not standard. I think it has been industry standard since 98 though

stuart

IGRP is a proprietary protocol of Cisco, and Cisco believes at this
time, that the proposed submission violates Cisco's rights in the
protocol and in the trademark. Therefore, Cisco believes the internet
draft should not be published.

I would like to verify on this. Any input from authority would be nice.

I really, really, *really* don't want this to sound as caustic as it's going
to sound, but I gotta say it anyway: dude, passing the CCIE Written is
*nothing*. You don't have *a* CCIE certification yet, much less are in a
position to go for a second. Don't put "CCIE Written" or "CCIE candidate"
on your resume, because neither of those are actual *certifications.* The
CCIE Written is a first step, nothing more (and a small first step at that,
in relation to the mammoth task of passing the Lab). If you're looking for
resume boosters, either bite the bullet and take the CCIE Lab, or maybe go
for some of the CCIP certs instead.

(Again, sorry about the acidic response...people putting "CCIE Written" on
their resumes *really* bugs me, and it sounds like what you're doing.
Hopefully I'm wrong. :-)

BJ

help..Which switch to use. [7:56985]

2002-11-06 Thread Stuart Laubstein
I am trying to find out which cisco switch I could use that will be able to
work with our nokia IP 650's. Right now we have the two Nokias connected
with a hub-they each have one physical address going to the hub. The hub
goes to a Cisco 7200. Right now the nokias are using VPR to use a virtual ip
address that communicates with the 7200. We want to replace the hub with a
switch but when we do we lose conectivity between the nokias over the
switch. It does work when we plug them into a 6009 but we were hoping we
could use another switch. I have checked using a 3524 and a 2948 and neither
work. All I want is for a to be able to ping b and vice versa using the
physical ip's.

thanks

AW: Mac Layer access list [7:48324]

2002-07-08 Thread Stuart Laubstein

Well I have never tried it but could one not just use an extended ACL 1100
to 1199? What is the 1100 to 1199 if not for the MAC? Or does this only work
on switches? Here is one link from Cisco

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat6000/sw_5_5/cmd_refr/
setsn_su.htm#xtocid168376

This is for a switch but I am also interested in the answer. I would not
mind being able to use a MAC access list on a cable modem we have to prevent
people other than required from dialing in. Please let me know if you find
the answer and I will keep looking.

ISDN problems... [7:34324]

2002-02-04 Thread Stuart Laubstein

I have a 3620 that has a problem with timing out. I have set the dialer
idle-timoue to 180 seconds--the router will keep the interface open for 180
seconds and then drop it for 9 seconds. I set it to 55 seconds and it did
the same timeout after 55 seconds--9 second drop. This only seems to happen
when the remote router is a cisco router. I have tried debug isdn
events--but can only see the interface coming back up. Any idea on things I
can try would be much appreciated or on debug options that would narrow it
for me...

2002-01-30 Thread Stuart Laubstein

I have a 3620 and I have to work on the console port but I am swamped with

term no mon command but it doesnt work--I still get connect messages etc.
Does anyone have an idea where these message come from and how I can shut
them off. We are using 12.0(7) XK1 Early Deployment release.

thanks

Switch for home lab [7:32797]

2002-01-22 Thread Stuart Laubstein

Could someone suggest a switch that would be good for a home lab. I cant
find a cat 5k (that I can afford) but might be able to get a 2901 or 2924.
Do either of those fit the bill? I have found lots in the archives about
routers for the home lab but not about which switches are needed. Also would
one or 2 switches be enough? It has also been suggested that I buy a 3900
token ring switch--any ideas on this?

thanks

Hello all, I have set up an ip address on my ethernet port on a 2501. Will
this also work if it is connected to a hub rather than directly to a switch.
ie ---switch--->hub--->AUI transceiver--e0 Or maybe I am using the wrong
cable between the hub and transceiver? I am using a straight through cable.
The hub is a netgear 10bt and it doesnt blink on the right side when

have 4 from 2 2820's. Any ideas much appreciated.

AW: cisco [7:16263]

2001-08-16 Thread Stuart Laubstein

I would say buy the CIM(s) from Cisco. I found them quite cheap actually-I
think they are US$69.96 on amazon right now. Getting a router is much more
expensive. I find the CIMS are quite good for trying out things that are too
expensive for home labs as well, like voice etc.

t&num=10&searchselector=0

Answer: Suspended due to the absence of a linkbeat, ring, or ATM network.
This is usually because the attached station is disconnected or
powered-down. Port automatically returns to enabled state when the condition
causing the suspension is removed.

AW: Cisco Certs Becoming Paper CCXX

2001-04-03 Thread Stuart Laubstein

I disagree with the assesment of the CCNA being a hard test. I would say it
was much easier than any university exam I took with the possible exception
of Psych100. You also do not need many math skills to pass a CCNA-ok maybe
what hex and binary are etc but thats about it. Even BCRAN and BCMSN were
not all that hard. University gives you an education and while certs can
help you get a job they do not really educate you unless you are completely
new to the networking field. I do agree that with more and more books coming
on the market all certs will have more people completing them including
juniper and CCIE but that is what Cisco and Juniper want as they need
support people if they want to keep increasing sales.

The CCNA is far harder than any test one will encounter with a major in
Education, Anthropology, History, Business Management, etc. Do you really
think the dumbest CCNA isn't more knowledgable in many areas, one being
math, than your daughters first grade teacher?
Bottom line: Remember this: As long as HR employees are hired because
they are great looking babes, they will have no clue on talent. Certs give
them something tangible and simple that they can understand. Degrees do the
same.
A couple more points: I hear people say that certifications are expensive

you best study hard before paying. They are not. Take them 3 or 4 times
each, pay your $300 or $400 and enjoy your huge $5000+ raise and job
security. Don't postpone it. People a class in Art Appreciation at a
"quality university" is going to run you $300 to $400 and is worthless by
their own admission. You need the whole degree.
...and yes. CCIE's will triple. There were no books. Now there are.
Books make tests easy. That is what make Juniper's test so hard now. You
can't read the 12 to 15 they have listed as easily as you can one Sybex book

that is designed around the exam.
Finally, if you are very knowledgeable and dislike "paper certs". Please
put out a book that gets paper people up to par. Something to read after
the exam and before your first interview. I think it would be very helpful
to many, who have a desire but lack an entire network at home. Plus, if you
think people are gaining an edge on you because of certs. You'll be
"Published". That puts you in the upper-diety range. You can live a
lifetime on that.

10.40.3.18 255.255.255.240

Hi Stuart,

The 12.0.7-XK1 is only supported on 2610-2621 and not the two models that
you
have have mentioned. Is there any particular reason that you need this
image??

You are correct in that the image requires 32MB of DRAM and 8MD of Flash

The 2600 series has two slots for DRAM, so if they are both full you are
going
to have to change them for 2 x 16MB.

get a really good night's sleep two nights before an
upcoming event, with the thought in mind that the
night before will be stressful sleep no matter what.

I usually try to live up to this advice, and it
works for me.

I feel your pain. Scored a 69 on Tuesday morning. Taking it again in 5
hours. For three days before the last test I didn't get but 2-3 hours a
night. I totally overstressed myself. So i'm not cramming at all for this
one. I've casually gone over some notes and focused on some things and I
feel more prepared than before. I'll repost this afternoon.

RIP--Network command

2001-01-17 Thread Stuart Laubstein

I was just doing some RIP configs and realized that I knew how to use the
"network" command but was not really sure how it worked. For instance if
there are three routers a,b,c with major nets 10.1.10.x, 10.1.20.x and
10.1.30.x Each router would need the network 10.1.0.0 correct? Now
supposing router c knew of another major net say the 172.68.x.x through rip
updates Do I need to have the network 172.68.0.0 command on router c or not?
Why? Any clarification on the command would be helpful

WAN switching Exam

2001-01-16 Thread Stuart Laubstein

Are there any good books for the CCNA Wan switching exam? Is it a useful
cert in any case--ie are companies looking for it at all or even know it
exists? The exam outline looked pretty much like CCNA with some of the stuff
from CCNP thrown in but not much. Has anyone actually taken the test?

CCIE Lab Location.

2000-12-20 Thread Stuart Laubstein

Does anyone know wether the lab in Halifax is as backed up as the 2
locations in the USA? I am also wondering if the different locations have
identical setups and or results(or is that a forbidden questiondue to the
NDA..;-) I was planning on taking my lab in Halifax (sometime this year
hopefully) mainly because I figured that paying for the hotel and other
ancilliary costs in CDN dollars would save me a bundle. Any info from anyone
who has done the lab in Halifax would be appreciated.

AW: CIM Expert labs IP

I think it is quite good for the money. I have it and the switching and find
them both good. Not as good as a lab but for the money worth it. I have just
ordered the VOIP CIM--hopefully it will also be good. That being said I
would think that they would be more helpful for CCNP studies than for the
CCIE lab..;-)

Trunking--

2000-11-22 Thread Stuart Laubstein

I have to write my BCMSN tommorow and have managed to confuse myself about
trunking. Are the following points correct please.
1. Am i correct in that all links between switches and or routers can be
trunks if the hardware supports it? When would a link not be a trunk
2. Why would a trunk be an hybrid trunk-if it is directly connected wouldnt
it only receive tagged OR untagged frames and not both?
3. Is ther aynthing special to remember about configuring a trunk from HSRP
routers usning ISL?

thanks

stuart

p.s. any last minute suggestions for the BCMSN also gladly accepted

Layer 4 switch and VLAN

2000-10-26 Thread Stuart Laubstein

Hello all, does anyone know of a cisco product that can perform layer 4
switching--I want to get something similar to a cabletron SSR 2000. I assume
a Catalsyt 5000 can do it but is there anything smaller? Would I be correct
in assuming that is a switch can do VLANS then it can do layer 4 switching?
What about a Catalsyt 2948G-L3 would that be sufficient?

thanks

Re:

2000-09-20 Thread Stuart Laubstein

I would agree if the connection was DCE/DTE cable but with a hub and 2
transceivers it should not need clocking it is just a telnet connection or
ping etc--I have only seen serial ports use clocking and this is the E/0
port. Everything is on the same subnet though. It is not my pc which I want
to connect with rather I want a telnet from router1 to router2.

Connect two cisco with transceivers

2000-09-20 Thread Stuart Laubstein

I am trying to connect two cisco 2501's together using rj45 cables and a hub
and transceivers in the AUI slots. Will this work, and if so what might I be
doing wrong as they certainly will not telnet or ping each other. I have set
ip's on both E/O interfaces and both trannsceivers show a link. Setup looks
like this

router1 E/0transceiver--cable--hub--cable--tranceiver--E/0 router2

both the cables are only 15 inches long and someone mentioned that maybe
they need to be longer. Should I be using some other kind of cable?

thanks for any help

Off Topic---Cisco Local Director 416

2000-09-12 Thread Stuart Laubstein

I am trying to use a Cisco 416 so that the 2 NT servers can use 1 ip
address--I hope to have the Cisco 416 monitor the two and if one goes down
to use the other one. Is there some way to set the load sharing features so
that this will happen--ie maybe set one to 100% and the other as backup, I
do not want them both to be running and sharing the load if possible. The NT
boxes are to be scanning mail and not running any other applications.

thanks for any idea's

Re: What routers for ccna 2.0 and ccnp 2.0?

2000-09-12 Thread Stuart Laubstein

You might try a 2501 and then a 2503(ethernet)or a 2504 (token ring). The
2504 will probably be a lot cheaper(400-600 bucks maybe) but you will need a
computer with a token ring card etc for it to to be useful as token ring
test box. ISDN will be the same for both of course. For CCNP you might need
a 3rd router and or a switch etc to properly try out all the technologies.

Boson Tests (Which ones?)

2000-08-01 Thread Stuart Laubstein

I have used the Boson test before and liked them but now I was wondering if
anyone might advise on the best ones to purchase--I am going for CCNP--I had
CMTD and CMTD expansion and ACRC 1 from Boson but I may lose them as I am

Boson--I dont recognize the teachers though.. Are there any you would

thanks

As an aside has anyone tried the other tests Boson offers like Linux or

CCNP= Just some tests

2000-05-25 Thread Stuart Laubstein

After reading a few previous posts about CCNA CCNP CCIE etc I decided to get
my 2 cents in. Until CCNP has a lab requirement it will be just a bunch of
tests. I agree someone with experience will make a MUCH better employee but
I think we all realize that anyone who is willing to study and use some
practice tests and maybe a Simulator product will certainly be able to pass
all the exams to be a CCNP. This being said almost all certs are just
guidelines and do not truly show real knowledge. I certainly am not worried
about the CCNA or CCNP being devalued(it may even happen to the CCIE in
time) because as long as one has the requisite experience and attitude they
will always find work. I actually find that as more and more "certified"
people come into the market who really dont know their job it increases my
job security as companies look more closely at prospective employee's and
normally pick the experience over just certs.

ISDN questions in Germany

2000-05-22 Thread Stuart Laubstein

Hi all, I am trying to do 2 things with a 2503--Well we hope an 804 will
work as well. I have three computers at home and I am trying to set up the
isdn so it will dial two numbers, ie I want to be able to type in telnet
work and receive work or telnet private and get my private ISP. Any ideas on
how to do this?

Second question is will there be any problems if two other users (who have
separate accounts with the ISP) to dial in and receive their profiles etc.

thanks for any help

stuart
