isdn configuration

2001-01-12 Thread steve

Hi folks,

I've been gone for a while (focusing on network security), but I'm back! I
saw a few old friend's names on the list but also missed a few.

Anyway, here's a problem I'm working on. Perhaps you'll find it interesting,
too.

Hardware Configuration:

Central office running 10.0/8 network. New Cisco 802 (1 etherent, one bri).

Two remote locations, each with an ISDN adapter card in the PC. Central
office and remote locations have Centrex-like service, so only 4 digits need
to be dialed. No per minute costs on ISDN for "inside" calls.

This setup is to replace 33K modems (I tried 56K, but connection speed was
usually around 28K). One B-channel will be fine for these users.

Each ISDN installation was tested by calling out to an ISP and establishing
connectivity (Thus, spids OK, switch-type OK, lines working, etc).

Design,

Make the ISDN cloud its own network, 10.0.76.0 /24

BRI interface on the router is .1, at the remote locations it is .4 and .7

Each remote station has its own ethernet adapter, with a separate IP
network.

Static routes in the 802 cover traffic to the remote sites' networks.

Here's the pertinent part of the config.

interface Dialer1
 ip address 10.0.76.1 255.255.255.0
 no ip directed-broadcast
 no ip proxy-arp
 encapsulation ppp
 no ip split-horizon
 dialer in-band
 dialer idle-timeout 200
 dialer map ip 10.0.76.4 5004
 dialer map ip 10.0.76.7 5007
 dialer hold-queue 10
 no cdp enable
!
ip http server
ip classless
ip route 10.0.67.0 255.255.255.252 10.0.76.7
ip route 10.1.45.0 255.255.255.252 10.0.76.4

Re: emty flash on 2500

2001-01-12 Thread steve

You have to break into the router as it boots (e.g., Ctl-Break from
Hyperterminal) and then go from the ">" prompt.

2500 series routers run IOS from flash. You cannot copy to flash without
terminating the IOS, but since it is empty you're running the Rom version
and it doesn't know how to terminate, and around we go.

>From the ">" prompt type ?. You'll see a list of a few commands. There is a
mini setup script. Set an ip adress and no shut the port, then TFTP into
flash.

Re: Snort versus Cisco IDS [7:62939]

2003-02-14 Thread steve
hi,

it`s even worse than you thought...

the unix director no longer exsists
...

the policy manager has now gone, and is now included as part of the new
ciscoworks VPN/Secuirty 2.1 SUITE of software...and you can`t get it
seperatly..
.

the ids hook into OV simple report`s messages/error`s to the alarm server
from there you can do what you would do with ordinary events (sms/email)

the blade`s themselfs are REALLY good ,because they sit on the backplane of
your core and see EVERYTHING ...
they drop less packets than other hardware probes (from MY experience ) and
have no Boundaries.(ie broadcast domain )...again this is all from my
experience

the software...

hmmm...

the onboard (as it is just a solaris box) is quite good and the event
browser is OK...

the way we have done it is to put a total of 2 cards into both our core`s
and have them report to

CW2k LMS ..for some sys messages
OV 6.2 for alert`s
IEV for alert`s ..

our server team uses ISS Realsecure and we might forgo the IEV and pump
alarm`s to that as it has a better alarm/report browser tool ..

Re: Who likes BGP? [7:64123]

2003-03-03 Thread steve
what i find really funny is that BGP has been open to attack for some
time,BUT

the hacker`s themselfs won`t attack BGP ,because that would be attacking
themselfes, because there way out (via the internet) is our way out ...and
there would be no point in that..

yes i agree that BGP needs securing but DNS or IP are far more urgent ,as an
attack on either one wouldn`t stop the attacker form carrying out the attack

Do use half duplex also what are you doing when its slow specifically?

is the server slow accessing computers on the network and taking files or is
it slow accessing the internet?

Re: Traffic Monitoring [7:64351]

2003-03-06 Thread steve
HMMM,

there are lots of answer`s to this question...

1. built into all 3600 and above ios 12.0 and above is something called
cisco netflow .
This will basically do a "sh ip accounting" (v1) and export this data " at
random intervals" to a collector...
This software can then be analysed and reports come of this...
to do this you can

1 buy the cisco netflow collector ,which is a unix app ,and point your
routers to it..
this simply collects data to be analysed by anither app
2.get a free version (i did 3.6) of cisco netflow analyser.to make reports
which to be honest is abit pants...
3. get a third party app like either HP Inetnert performance monitor or
concord traffic accountant ..

2. RMON Probes
what you could do is buy a phsical probe and tap it inbetween your csu/dsu
and router..
and again you need some sort of analysing software
e.g Netscout RTM 1.4 (as part of ciscoworks LMS2.1) and a netscout probe
(8241 fast ethernet)

3
Get MRTG it does all you ask for (and so iam told ) it include`s netflow
monitoring.runs on linux and is well supported

I agree. I may not be the most technical person but i am good at selling so
i have no problems getting gigs to go to. what i find is not all tech guys
are good at sales and thats a shame. If you wanted to really be great you
need to do sales. Telemarketing is where you learn the tricks of the trade.

Re: Very poor performance on Cat 6000 gigabit? [7:57695]

2002-11-21 Thread steve
hi,

as far as i was aware you CAN`T team to different speed network cards

we use the intel/Compaq/HP (the same cards/drivers) and i have not been
able to get the teaming to work with 100/1000 .

if you put 2 1g`s togther ...no problem2 100`s ...again no problem
but different speed`s NOPE..

Re: LMS v2.1 [7:57845]

2002-11-21 Thread steve
hi,

not really...

LMS was never designed to do this ..
I too have never been able to get the polled info back quick enough for my
liking
I spoke to an instructor who said that it will only update after 5 minutes
and that it is not as responsive as he would have liked
what you could do is download "SNMPc" ...it is a small but useful "HP
Openview Netowrk Node manger" type programwhic will give you instant
updates.or you could try solarwinds "network performance monitor"
...which is the same sort of thing...

both are quite cheep to buy and should suit a small upto 100 device network
...

Re: Souce Quench to a device from an MSFC [7:57870]

2002-11-22 Thread steve
hi,

some real stupid question...

what is the default gateway for all the device`s...

the source-quench should only come from the device that is bieng
pinged...(ie the server itself ),these errors would not show up on the
switch as the packets are getting through ok and it is the server that is
not aaccepting them (source-quench=go away i am to busy)

BUT if you are not getting the message from the switch and unix server and
these are using a different VLan as default gateway (as i susupect you
server and WKs is ) then the problem could be an overworked vlan int...

check the amount of packets per sec of each int .any that are between
4-10,000 packets are bieng bashed majorly ...

just to add,

We are an enterprise and we will be rolling out an MPLS solution very
soon...

it`s a MP-BGP VPN solution which a lot of provider`s in the UK are starting
to push

Re: CCIE Vs. BS or MS dergree [7:59481]

2002-12-19 Thread steve
Howard,

just my 2 pence

you know ...

funny you should say about BGP ... I was just thinking that the other day...

but I personally don`t agree with the new protocol theory...
I personally don't claim to be able to do thisI can barely plug in a
switch but
as far as I am aware the ISP BGP world is an all seeing all knowing
world were all OX amount of routes are seen by everyone ..and I believe this
is where the problem lies.

When designing a routing protocol ,there is a basic problem that all
designer`s face is links go up/down ...route`s appear and disappear...
the more routes you have the more the protocol has to do ...regardless of
how you get around this fact with fancy techniques ,there will still be a
scalability problem based around a connectivity problem ,the more routes the
more unstable the less your inclined to scale
the protocol`s I think can probably made more efficient ,but it does not
address the real problem ,
that is the amount of routes that a being added daily make`s any
computational algorithm`s task very difficult .

the only way in my humble opinion to make this more stable/scaleable is to
back to the OSPF DESIGN NOT PROTOCOL...

Regionalise ...create Super AS for various regions i.e US UK JP
AUS...and then Tag all routes coming out ..

OK (in an ideal world) this IS NOT the only way of doing thingslink 1 of
8000 goes down ...your advertising all 8000 out of one supernet ...

But atleast in this case only your "Super ASBR`s" if you like would only
need to communicate with eachother ...

perhaps this is what already happen`s but i see that a fundamental shift
in the way we network is required and not necessarily a change in protocol

many thanks

(I`ll keep my head down now ...i think...i`m only trying to help !!!)

Steve

Re: Exterior Routing Scalability (was: CCIE Vs. BS or MS [7:59532]

2002-12-19 Thread steve
hello,

indeed a large problem

the need for a hierarchical routing protocol ,that is effectively flat...

i think that is impossible for the internet to ever really converge ...if it
did it would indicate a lack of growth or movement which would not be
good for my job prospects !

i think that the industry needs more focus in this ,

i believe that for all intense and purposes`s the ip address is dead
having a ip address limit`s your flexibility ,and any future expansion is
dictated by it ..we need to find a way of doing something like this ( i
DREAD writing this)

fixed domain name

i,e www.steve.com

Multiprocessing routers

and ...

a Dynamic address of some format (a la` DHCP).eek dhcp .i dread it
...

but in order for us to achieve what the customer`s are driving for ,it`s
probably the only real way to give people the flexibilty the need and want

i think it may be time for the industry to start driving the customer
and not the other way around...dynamic addressing can be done ,but do we
WANT to do it ...i`m not sure that it wouldn't`t cause more problems
than it solve`s
but also i think that we are approaching a time when we will HAVE no choice
but to address this ...or face an internet meltdown ...

at this point i back away ...stating that my intellect and knowledge of the
problem is not as rounded as it needs to be to deal with this ..

but ,as usual ,your answer was appreciated, and i will get on the mailing
list ...(just to read)

many thanks

Steve

Re: SNMP Filter [7:60100]

2003-01-03 Thread steve
also one thing to point out is that even with a config of the like that has
been correcetly recommended you still have problems with wasted bandwidth
and CPU resource because someone is trying to send the request`s to you in
the first place ...
and also if you have any syslog logging setup they will be reported in
thatas well

ALSO someone could be trying to Hack you (snmp isnt that secure )...as has
happened to me

ANYWAY
here is a pretty locked down snmp config form one of my 7500`s

Re: problems while acessing Ciscoworks 2000 [7:60285]

2003-01-06 Thread steve
hi,

this is a java "FEATURE" ,...we run it on a sun E250 dual proc 1gb mem and
it goes very well..

once you have accepted the first security "token" and select "grant always"
the problem will go away ,,,

it is authenticating "of sorts" your PC .hell ...actually it is just
registering it for future updates..

also you must remember on a pc that has never connected to CW2K the server
download`s and install the java 1.3_01 client ,which can take some time..3-7
mins with install

but again this only happen`s once...
when you register your Pc buy saying "GRANT ALWAYS" some java CAR files are
installed onto your machine which simply register you everytime you
logonalso the web server itself, keeps some cookie info about which
machine`s have tried to log on unsuccessfully..

it`s ok and part of the process ... just say YES

I have used Cw2k for some time and have got USED TOO it`s little forboyles

Re: set cam permanent HELP! [7:60448]

2003-01-06 Thread steve
hey miss P

if you do a show trunk it should show you it`s native vlan that is the
one you are after ...

"from CCO"
The following example shows how to add a unicast entry to the table for
module 2, port 9, and how to add a permanent multicast entry to the table
for module 1, port 1, and module 2, ports 1, 3, and 8 through 12:

Console> (enable) set cam static 00-00-0c-a0-03-fa 2/9
Static unicast entry added to CAM table.
Console> (enable) set cam permanent 01-40-0b-a0-03-fa 1/1,2/1,2/3,2/8-12
Permanent multicast entry added to CAM table.
Console> (enable)

i got the above from
http://cco-rtp-1.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps679
/products_command_reference_chapter09186a008007f2dc.html#13648
watch the wrap

from memory if you specify the native vlan and ONE port in the trunk that
SHOULD include all ports of the trunk with the set cam commandI just
can`t be 100 %
HTIOSH (hope this is of Some help)

Re: Possible CDP bug? Check it out! [7:59929]

2003-01-06 Thread steve
hi chuck,,

yeah,
it is abit funny ,one thing also i noticed ,
that sometime i had to do a "clear CDP table" before this properly kicked in
all my 3548`s were ok ,but some of the older 2926MXL`s need that...

but i agree with you about the bug.number 1XX in an ever increasing list
of bugs

Cheers

Re: problems while acessing Ciscoworks 2000 [7:60285]

2003-01-08 Thread steve
hi,

that`s a real shame as it`s a great product...(2.1 once you have got all the
bugs out)

my sun machine has a 100 meg connection to a 5509 but it is in another
building...which is connected to us over a 100meg fibre link (this link also
carries normal "user"data)

i am running solaris 2.6 32bit version on a dual proc(300mhz) system with
1gig of mem and a 36 gig hdd,

but to be honest all the people i have spoken to recommend running it on
atleast a dual proc system .

it shouldn`t be that slow .what are you running it on

steve

Re: problems while acessing Ciscoworks 2000 [7:60285]

2003-01-10 Thread steve
sorry

we got a bit of topic...

all the access permissions are setup in ...

Server configuration , setup ,secuiry,modify/Delete Users

but even with the VERY basic permissions of helpdesk you should still be
able to ruin ciscoview...

i believe there is a permissions issue on the disk you have installed
ciscoworks

answer

make sure your file permission`s is
read/write for both group and world on the /opt/CSCOpx directory (also
check permissions on Win2k)

also make sure (unix) that the owner of the direcotry is csuser/causers

again i don`t know which OS tyour onbut there are no default user
permissions on the web server(unix)..

HTH

steve

Re: IDS [7:60769]

2003-01-10 Thread steve
hi,

it really depends on how you want to implemnet it ...

the cisco stuff comes as a physicall probe device...i.e either a PCI card
and stand-alone probe or a 6500 card...

wear-as realsecure can come as a agent/software app that you can put on
server`s ...

the plus and minus point

Cisco REAL
+
Easyier to config from box Req`s more devices out of box
(agent/collector/reporter/manager..these can all be on
goes into 6509 seperate boxes)
user int good can run as Unix/linux/w2k
agent or probe or standalone probe
  lots of support
-
not easy to develop and expand reqs somone with Dbase knoweledge
database req`s work after multiple probes agents can crash on NT

QOS for Citrix

2001-02-05 Thread Steve Linney

G'day All,

Currently got a problem with a WAN I support where they are getting
time-outs with their Citrix Clients. Citrix Clients are connected via
frame-relay edge routers 1700's to an ATM core router 7200VXR NPE-200 with
ATM DS3 routing traffic between all sites. Can anybody suggest any QOS
solutions to prioritize the Citrix traffic. So far I have reserched the
following:

Citrix Ports 1494/tcp ica
  1494/udp ica
(not sure which of these needs more priority)
bandwidth ~ 20k per user (although I have heard that it can be a lot higher
than this)
average packet size 300 bytes
delay sensitive

I am looking at Priority queueing, but a little concerned about the warnings
that it may starve other traffic if the Citrix queue is constantly full. If
anyone has any suggestions, or played with this before it would much
appreciated.

Many Thanks

Steve

I've tried searching massively through CCO and can't seem to find the
solution to this problem.

I have a Cisco 7206VXR and everytime I try to boot it up, everything is
dandy...but it always comes to the prompt of "Router(boot)". This is
the
output when I run a "show version". It says that the system is returned

ROM by reload. Is this tied in with the problem? I currently have it
set
to boot off the flash disk with the image of c7200-boot-mz.120-10.S. Am
I
missing something?

Perhaps you need a CCO login associated to a Reseller/Partner, not a
client
CCO login.

I can get to the site and what I read on CCO is that the software/tool
is
part of a course.

When you take the course - you get the tool. The course is $435.

* * * * * * *
Training

In order to insure partner success and to maximize the benefit from
Cisco
Network Designer, the software package has been bundled with training,
which
is being offered through Global Knowledge for $435.00 per person.

* * * * * * * *

Then they want $995 a year for maintenance (per user) and I think the
Auto-Discover module is an additional $1995.

Anyway, don't think it can be downloaded from CCO.

RE: PIX problem

2001-03-19 Thread Steve Smith

I e-mailed Sam, and the group I thought, but this seems to be solved by
the alias command. Our users can reach things in the DMZ by it's
registered ip from inside the network. If I have a web site in a dmz
and I want to go to it and its IP addr is 66.22.33.44 and that is the
way DNS sees it, then I can use the alias command and my users can then
go to www.xyz.com. They can also connect to whatever port deemed by the
external address.

Maybe I am reading the post wrong so please correct me if I am. Example:
alias (inside) 208.x.y.z 192.168.a.b 255.255.255.255
as long as I have a static to match this work great. The static has to
apply to the DMZ or inside pc/server IP.

Steve

Sam, Cisco documentation suggests that there is no workaround for this.
I've had the same problem. From what I read on CCO, for a machine with
a
static global IP address mapped to a LAN address, LAN users use the
local IP
while outside users use the global IP. If someone has a config where
they
can use the Global address inside the LAN, I'd like to see how it was
done.

After entering the approriate static and conduit (WWW) commands, I tried
accessing the host from our internal network using the external address
and
I was not able to. I then tested from a machine that is outside our
firewall and was able to access the host without any problem.

Is their a command that I am missing in order to let users on our
internal
network access hosts using the external IP addresses?
Thanks in advance,
Sam

RE: Something to think about

2001-03-20 Thread Steve Smith

So is any other certification or college degree. Neither one is worth
their salt until you have the experience to work beside it. On a English
professors door at Rhodes College was a big chart that broke down
statistics. It showed that the average person with a college degree
makes $5 dollars more a year, globally, than a person without a college
degree. The difference? College teaches you to think. So go the
multitudes of certs out there. They are not there to say you are an
expert who can solve the worlds problems, they are merely there to show
you have put forth the effort to have a base understanding of how
something works...much the same as a bachelors degree. By the way I
am proud to be a CCNAand then some.

respectfully,
Steve

After all, the CCNA is really just an admission ticket to play in the
big
leagues. It doesn't prove that you can play or hit the ball over the

How did you do that? Napster isn't port based... Napster can use ANY

RE: Off Topic: Frame Relay vs. ADSL

We do both. The only problem with ADSL is the distance limit. It is
still a little flakey and even carriers will tell you not to bank your
business on it. Its dependability has improved greatly in a year but
still lacks a little. All in all it seems to work fairly well for our
remote clients and myself at home.

RE: Last Nights DC Cisco Meeting

2000-12-19 Thread Steve Jacks

I was there at the meeting last night. The information at that meeting was meant for
training providers to watch out for what is posted. I believe the fact that the
knowledge about who was being sued by Cisco was to remain confidential. Cisco is
basically saying that you can publish information as to the CCNA, CCDA, CCNP, and CCDP
but as for CCIE, you better stay away. Cisco will use every legal means possible to
keep the CCIE the black belt of networking.

Also, they mentioned Howard Berkowitz website "knowledgenet.com" but he didn't do all
168 violations. They are going after all the CCIE authors on the site. Howard is
charging money for getting the information so he is first on Cisco's list.

Nezar,

We needed to go to IP/Plus on a 1600 to get Radius support. This required
more flash than the 4mb we originally purchased.

Re: VTP Protocal Cisco 5000 and 3com Superstack II 1100

2001-01-10 Thread Steve Linney

I was looking into this Cisco/non-Cisco switch issue just recently and was
told that the 802.1q standard stipulates only 1 x STP, and yet with Cisco's
802.1q implementation you can have per vlan STP (not quite matching the
802.1q standard). Perhaps someone in the group can clear this issue up for
us.

RE: Using Register IP Address on your Private network

2001-01-10 Thread Steve Smith

We had a MASSIVE dispute within our company about this. We bought
another company and they uses registered IPs on everything down to the
workstation. They claimed NAT caused problems with most programs and it
was just easier to use registered IPs.

We had a meeting with 3 different CCIE's that worked for Cisco and 2
security consulting firms and decided, although it would be nice to use
registered IPs, it was more efficient and secure to use private IPs. We
then tested the "apps that won't work with NAT" and found 99 percent of
them worked fine if the server and firewalls where configed correctly.

Don't get me wrong, NAT can and does have some minor downfalls but
overall, in my opinion, it's does its job.

Steve

their

Do
you really need to burn register addresses on a private network?

I would like to hear anyone opinion on this subject

RE: CiscoWorks2000

2001-01-15 Thread Steve Austin

Rik,
CiscoWorks 2000 is slow. We used CiscoWorks RWAN on a Compaq DL380 (733Mhz
processor, RAID5, 768 MB RAM) for a client. We did NOT use MS SQL, just used
the Microsoft jet database for indexing.

(1) Heed the software versions in the documentation.
(2) Configure an administration console on a workstation (it's in the docs).
This will significantly offload some processing to the client --
client-server model, eh?
(3) I'd recommend 1 Gig of RAM.
(4) Maybe use SQL vs. jet database for indexing.
(5) Download the patches and updates from CCO. You did sell them Smartnet,
right?
(6) Use RME.

CEF or round robin

2001-01-19 Thread Steve Smith

OK gang I need to opinions.

We set up 2 point-to-point Ts to a client running CEF. Everything seemed
to work fine, speed was good, packets per T was about equal. Then we had
a switch go bad. We replaced it but still had a sluggish network. Some
of our techs came in from another office and together we found the
problem.

While looking around they saw CEF per-packet was set on the 2 Ts. They
informed our CEO that was really wrong and should not be ran that way.
They said "round robin is the only real way to utilize 2 Ts". I say #

Any opinions?

So what was the problem you found that was effecting traffic negatively?

CEF does not necessarily "load share" equally across two paths. It can
be
set up to do "per source/destination" or "per packet"
Per source/destination has the usual problems - all traffic can end up
going
across one link. Per packet will indeed share traffic more or less
equally
across two links.

My reading indicates that CEF per packet is actually the way to go if
one
wants to balance traffic equally across two paths.

( Cisco press book Network Design and Case Studies )
( BTW anyone else think this book is not all that good? )

Re: 3 down, 1 to go...(passed BCRAN)

2001-01-21 Thread Steve H

In my case.. 1 down, 3 to go..

Congrats Mark.. I just finally got myself back on the study train myself,
and took the BCMSN Switching test today. I've been out of the study game,
and out of GroupStudy for about a year now (Sorry guys & gals!!!) ;-)

Well.. I finally found the motivation again, and passing todays test helped!
I also found myself not studying as dilligently as I could have. In the end,
I made it thru on 2 things. Personal experience and 2 days of cramming with
the Cisco Press BCMSN Exam Certification Guide. I broke down & bought it as
a last minute desparation move, as the Cisco Press BCMSN "course book" was
putting me to sleep every day by chapter 2.. (Theory is soo boring!!).

With only 2 days with the cert guide, I crammed the sample test & read the
chapter Q&A quizzes over & over.. and on the topics I didn't fully
understand, I read over as much of the chapter as I could to fill in the
mental blanks.

I do think I got a bit lucky, as there were a few area's I still feel weak
in, but either got no questions on those area's, or barely 1 or 2.

So, the concensus is that BCRAN is the easiest? Interesting. I thought
todays test was easier than I expected, but still enough to cause a bead or
2 of sweat.. Personally, I know I'm horrible at things like Async configs..
but ISDN I find rather easy.

If anyone is still around from the last time I haunted the list (Chuck..
Tony.. Ozzie.. Paul.. anyone... Buehler.. Buehler.. ) they'll probably
remember why.. but that was in another life ;-)

Interesting that everyone thinks CIT is the worst. Personally, I'm setting
aside 3 weeks hard study time for BSCN Routing as the hardest. I'm on a
tight personal goal schedule. 1 test every 2 weeks, but again, 3 for BSCN.
So, tomorrow I schedule the CIT and hit the books. I suspect I have an
advantage, in that most of my experience is raw troubleshooting. It's also
mostly in routing, over switching, but the BSCN goes into a depth I haven't
learned from experience yet. So, I'm planning heavy studies for that one.
CIT I'm more secure about. Hopefully, it's not overconfidence..

If all goes well.. we (my test partner) should see CCNP accomplished by
mid-March. As she likes to say "Failure is not an option" ;-) Then
again.. one does not always need immediate gratification to achieve success.
But.. drive on we must!

Steve-H@ .. oh wait.. nevermind. Now it's just:

Andre..

The 'front line' person you get is the CRC agent (Customer Response Center).
They are not engineers/technicians. However, they are encouraged, and
trained, to field as much of the problem as is possible for them. Their
efforts off-load a great deal of the calls that otherwise would be going to
the TAC engineers. Leaving TAC free (or reasonably so) to put more effort
into handling their already heavy technical related call volume. Another
benefit, is that it gives the CRC agent, some experience into the technical
side of the Cisco world, and some of them progress to move to TAC.. and
begin their own learning & certification track. It's a win for TAC in their
assists, a win for the CRC in their growth, and since Cisco support is
considered hands-down the best.. it's a win for Cisco as a whole.

> Bob Johnson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

bad"...

Bob..

I can definitely relate to the story.. but do keep in mind, that TAC was
100% on the ball in taking care of the problem. Unfortunately, this sounds
like a shipping related problem. I'd also suspect some mishandling at the
fulfilment docks. I can further tell you, that issues like that are followed
up on internally.

The worst case I dealt with.. was a call I fielded to a customer who said
his product (don't recall what it was) looked like it had been beaten up &
thrown around. Of course, I felt he was exaggerating, and figured the unit
was a refurbed product with some cosmetic damage. Well.. he was quite
descriptive of the damage.. which totally shocked me to think a Cisco
product arived in the condition he stated. I asked him to send me a picture
of the box & the shipping it came in.

I have no idea who was smoking what that day in shipping, but the product
was in a shoddy cardboard carton, and the casing truly was crushed in on one
side and gouged severly on 2 others. Needless to say, it was an overside
wrecked paperweight.

He was of course sent a new replacement immediately. Unfortunately, I never
did find out what happened to create this problem in the 1st place. And I
definitely tried ;-)

Dial-in user assigned duplicate IP addresses

2000-09-28 Thread Donohue, Steve

Good morning
gang,

I am currently using
a 3640 to allow remote users to dial-in to our LAN.  They are receiving
their IP address information from a DHCP server, as opposed to an IP pool on the
router.  This appears to work fine for about a week at a time, then users
start to receive duplicate addresses.

The 3640 is running
12.1(3a).  The Mica modems' portware is version 2.5.1.

Has anyone out there
seen this type of behavior before?  Can anyone point me in the direction of
a resolution?

Any help/comments
would be appreciated.

Thanks in
advance.

Steve Donohue

RE: ISDN problem

run the show stack command and paste the results into the stack decoder.

Looks to me like a process issued a non maskable interrupt while a non
re-entrant code segment was executing (kinda like getting caught having sex
by your mom hehe). Course that don't explain why.

Re: FOUNDATION EXAM

2000-10-16 Thread Steve Carson

Elijah,

I took the FRS 2.0 Exam a week ago. It is a difficult test and will cover
all of the area quite well. Since the recent change in the exam with the
newest version 2.0 here are some pointers that I learned in the exam.

1. The exam is 155 questions and you have about 125 minutes to take it.
That means that either you know the answer to the question or you do not,
they do not give you any time to sit and ponder over the questions. As in
all Cisco exams now, you cannot skip questions and return to them later, so
I would say if you do not know the answer take your best guess and move on
(or you will wind up either not finishing the exam or be on the last section
with about 10 minutes left).

2. The exam is in 3 distinctive parts, Routing, Switching and Remote
Access. Each section will appear in that order numbered 1-52 or so. When
that section is done you will see the question numbers start over.

3. Remember with the FRS 2.0 you must obtain a passing score on each
section, Routing, Switching and Remote Access to pass the exam, if you fail
1 section you fail the entire exam.

4. All of the questions are pulled directly from the individual test,
however I believe that anyone can pass this exam with enough preparation.
It is a great deal of material to cover at one time and requires a in depth
knowledge of all 3 areas.

Good luck

Steve

taking the foundation just to get it over with, can anyone shed light on
this test? Have you taken it, is it tough, what did they hit you on, ect

Not receiving ICMP messages

2000-10-24 Thread Donohue, Steve

Good Afternoon
All,

I am currently
trying to resolve an issue where we are having trouble sending data across a
tunnel running GRE encryption.  With this encryption employed the MTU size
allowed is decreased to 1476.  When we attempt to send traffic (email, ftp,
etc...) through the tunnel, we are finding that it does not
work.

My sniffer trace is
showing that the frames being sent are setting the DF bit, which I would
expect.  I would then expect that if the router is unable to send the
packet, it would drop it and return an ICMP message back to the source
telling it to decrease the packet size and try it again.  I am not seeing
any of these messages.

We are running HSRP
on the ethernet interfaces that connect to my LAN.  I believe we are
running a 12.0 IOS release, although I am not sure of the actual
version.

Does anyone have any
ideas why this might be happening?  I am trying to resolve this issue while
having no CLI access to the routers.  I have been informed by the
controlling body that there are no access lists prohibiting ICMP messages from
being sent, and there are no firewall rules in place that would be dropping the
ICMP messages.

Any and all
explanations of possible causes/resolutions would be
appreciated.

RE: Not receiving ICMP messages

2000-10-25 Thread Donohue, Steve

Thanks for your replies.

A traceroute will traverse the entire path. As for the MTU of 1476, I
believe it is because of the overhead added by the encryption. Attempts
have been made to increase the MTU size on the link, but to this point they
have been unsuccessful.

When an ftp is attempted from a UNIX box, which is trying to send with an
MTU of 1500, the process fails. When that same file is ftp-d from a Win95
machine ( which uses a smaller MTU ) it works fine.

This is why I am pointing to the MTU issue, and lack of ICMP messages, as
possible problems.

Hi Steve,

Is the MTU size of 1476 a limitation of the encryption, or merely because of
the overheads added by the encryption knocking it down from 1500. Is it a
possibility to increase the MTU size on the link?
