(Cisco's Answer)RE: CCNP and CCNA recertification [7:72138]
Hi, Kevin Wigle and Mwalie W Thanks for your answer, you are very kindly and helpful and your answer is all correct. To get CCNP certification, a valid (not expired) CCNA certification is required. So it means that I need to spend another US$125 to take the CCNA exam, although the exam itself is easy. I plan to take the CCNA exam this Friday, and then I am a VALID CCNP. :-) After finish that, I can do my best to prepare the CCIE written exam. I think we are "net friends", I'm glad to help you when you need. Best Regards, Grant The following is the answer from Cisco. Cisco's Answer-- Dear Qing: Yes, you will need to take the CCNA exam. To achieve the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification you have a valid CCNA certification. On June 24, 2003 Cisco Systems, Inc. announced three enhancements to the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) program. The enhancements include a new two-step exam path for new candidates entering the networking field, revisions to the existing CCNA exam and the option for candidates to recertify their CCNA certification by passing the ICND 640-811 exam. Candidates have two options to obtain their CCNA certification: 1. Passing the CCNA 640-607 (Last day to register September 30, 2003) or CCNA 640-801 exam (available on June 30, 2003) 2. Passing the INTRO 640-821 exam (currently as beta exam 641-821) and ICND 640-811 exam (available on June 30, 2003) Cisco has developed several recommended courses that are only available through a Cisco Certified Learning Partner. Re: CCNP and CCNA recertification [7:72138]
Grant, Correct, you will need to do the CCNA exam againthis should not be difficult considering the rate at which you have been doing your CCNP :-) Good Luck...you are not a CCNP despite finishing the 4 courses. Very strange rule indeed. It must be meant to suit Cisco's Certification Information System logic. Re: CCNP and CCNA recertification [7:72138]
There is no recert for CCNA - that would make your CCNA inactive and therefore yes you will have to do the CCNA again. As the entry-level certification of the Cisco Career Certifications Program, CCNA represents a strong foundation and understanding of IP networking and troubleshooting. The enhancements include a new two-step exam path for new candidates entering the networking field, revisions to the existing CCNA exam and the option for candidates to apply one of the new exams for CCNA recertification. A Two-Step Approach: The two-step approach introduced in the CCNA program offers candidates the ability to certify at their own pace and skill levels. The two step approach does not replace the existing one exam option, but allows candidates to achieve the certification in two stages by passing a new Introduction to Cisco Networking Technologies (INTRO) exam and a new Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices (ICND) exam to achieve CCNA certification. "Given the popularity and success of the CCNA program, we continue to enhance CCNA to meet our customers needs through skills assessment aimed at today's job requirements," said Don Field, senior manager, Internet Learning Solutions Group, Cisco Systems, Inc. "The two-step approach offers those new to the networking field the option to test their networking knowledge in stages." The two-certification paths for CCNA include: Passing the CCNA 640-801 exam (available on June 30, 2003); or Passing the INTRO 640-821 exam (currently as beta exam 641-821) and ICND 640-811 exam (available on June 30, 2003). Revisions to the CCNA content: The revised CCNA 640-801 exam replaces existing CCNA 640-607 exam and is designed to better assess the networking skills of entry level candidates. The CCNA curriculum includes understanding the functions and operations of local area networks (LAN), Cisco IOS fundamentals, wide area networks (WAN), virtual private networks (VPN), and Storage Area Networks (SAN). Other topics covered in the CCNA curriculum are IP Addressing, Cisco Command Line Interface (CLI), Routing and Switching technologies and protocols. The CCNA certification content, technology and testing remains focused on real-world skills assessment with labs and exam simulations being key components of CCNA courses and exams. Recertification: The new ICND exam now qualifies CCNA holders for recertification. The CCNA certifications are valid for three years. To recertify, candidates can also pass the new ICND 640-811 exam, the current CCNA exam, or any exam at the Professional or Cisco Qualified Specialist level bearing the prefix 642. The existing CCNA 640-607 exam will retire on September 30, 2003. CCNA: www.cisco.com/go/ccna Cisco Learning Partners are the only source of authorized Cisco training. I haven't seen anything about this before, so I thought I'd share an article from CertMag Cisco_PolishesCisco Polishes CCNA Certification Cisco Systems will announce several enhancements to the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) program tomorrow, June 24th. CCNA, Cisco's most popular certification, was introduced in April 1998 and is the entry-level certification for the Cisco Career Certification Program. It requires base-level knowledge of IP networking and troubleshooting. Enhancements to the CCNA program include a new two-step exam path, revisions to content and a new recertification option. Candidates will now have two paths to approach CCNA certification: a single-exam path that includes exam #640-801 (which will be available June 30th) or a two-exam path that includes exam #640-821 (Introduction to Cisco Networking Technologies, or INTRO) and exam #640-811 (Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices, or ICND). http://www.certmag.com/articles/templates/cmag_nl_extra_content.asp?articlei d=298 &zoneid=37 (watch the wrap)... --- Dennis Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=71256&t=71256 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You can pass one test, only the BSCI or BCRAN test, and retain you CCNA status (for another 3 years) until you can test for the rest. You don't need to retest for the CCNA at all. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Walker, James, IS Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 10:32 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Recert CCNA [7:70459] Few months is enough time to get your CCNP, depending where you stand with understanding the technology and hands on. I think that you only need to pass one CCNP test in order to extend your CCNA status. Below is a quote from www.cisco.com "CCNA certifications are valid for three years. RE: CCNA certification [7:70400]
To be a CCNP you must have a valid and current CCNA. The CCNP then validates your new status. I found this out when my friend passed all the four exams for CCDP but because he didn't have the CCDA he cannot call himself CCDP until he does. The same applies to CCNP without a CCNA. To get my CCDP I require passing both CCDA and the design exam, not just the design alone. RE: Cisco Instructor - CCNA Class [7:65742]
Robert The Cisco Academy program does a very good job of preparing instructors (and students) for CCNA. I had 15 years in data comm and networking before going for CCAI/CCNA, and had to study quite a bit to get the Cisco view of the world. Of course IOS commands are key (and becoming more important with sims) but many of the questions require students to compare/contrast multiple technologies or concepts. If nothing else, look for a local Cisco academy program (at a junior college probably) and sign up for a class. Once signed up, you have access to *ALL* of the material (all four semesters). The books are excellent references, but the "e-sims" are limited. Invest in either routers or a full RouterSim. If you plan to teach, you'll need a stack of routers anyway (bill them to your company). Build and troubleshoot the "Semester 2 lab" (five routers, plus hubs and switches), and you'll be ready to go. Good Luck. I took the CCNA after teaching 3 semesters (out of 4) plus studied the rest, and got 975 (out of 1000) on the CCNA exam. RE: Cisco Instructor - CCNA Class [7:65742]
The most important thing to remember is that the CCNA is roughly 70% concepts and 30% commands. It's very easy to get wrapped up in commands, but it doesn't do students any good if they've memorized the commands to configure frame relay but they don't know what frame is or when it is used. You may want to post a message on the CCNA list. I believe there are several other Network Academy instructors there who will have some input too. I think it depends on the question. I've found that most exams will give a little hint, either the answer doesn't support both choices or the question will have some comment of suitability of subnets. if I had to choose though, I'd choose 2^6-2, since it wasn't till 12.0 that the ip-subnet zero was made default and the tests were written prior to that. scott ""Geert Nijs"" wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Hello, > > When you are asked for the number of subnets in the exam CCNA 640-607: > > ie. 150.10.10.10 255.255.255.252.0 > > -> subnet bits = 6 > > -> supported subnets: 2^6 or 2^6-2 ?? > > In other words: if noting is mentioned in the question, do I have to > count zero-subnet and broadcast subnet as valid ? or invalid ? > when nothing is mentioned. > > > Geert Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=65241&t=65234 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
CCNA Exam - number of subnet question [7:65234]
Hello, When you are asked for the number of subnets in the exam CCNA 640-607: ie. 150.10.10.10 255.255.255.252.0 -> subnet bits = 6 -> supported subnets: 2^6 or 2^6-2 ?? In other words: if noting is mentioned in the question, do I have to count zero-subnet and broadcast subnet as valid ? or invalid ? when nothing is mentioned. Re: myth about ccna salary??? [7:5925]
As an employee of one of those training centers, I would like to warn anyone considering one of them to beware of schools that list salaries in their advertisments. The last I checked Institutions that are accredited by the US Department of Education are not permitted to make promises with regard to future salary. They are not even allowed to allude to it. So if you are thinking about enrolling in a school which advertises "That if you take our xxx course, you can earn $" you should be suspect. Also beware of schools that offer Placement guarntees, as it is impossible to guarantee that you will get a job unless the school has an internship program which they consider a placement. Re: myth about ccna salary??? [7:5925]
For those who came into the IT industry during the mid to late 1990s, these last few years have been eye opening. Let's face it...if you could spell MCSE in 1997, you could easily land a job earning $70k or more per year. This amazing earning power was an anomaly that burst with the dotcom bubble. Historically, jobs that paid significantly more than average (engineering, medicine, law, etc.) required a great deal of study and knowledge in the chosen field. When it got to the point that just about anyone with a heartbeat could pass certain certification tests by rote memorization of braindumps, two things happened: 1) Certified people became a commodity and supply exceeded demand. As anyone who took even an intro economics course can tell you, excess supply leads to falling prices. In this case, the price (salary) required to obtain the commodity (certified persons) took a nose dive. 2) Companies realized that certifications were no predictor of ability or performance. Rather, they are at best a baseline indicator that the person has been exposed to certain ideas and concepts. Today, we're dealing with a slow economy and an excess of qualified IT labor. Those who get jobs in today's market are those with the better qualifications (experience, education, and certifications), those who are willing to work for a salary greatly reduced from what they could expect to earn even two years ago, and those who are lucky. The only places touting the ability of new CCNAs to earn $60k per year are those training centers that base their very existence on luring people to very expensive classes with the illusory promise of graduating with a high-paying job in hand. The bottom line is that there's no substitution for education and hard work when trying to get a job in today's IT world. Are certifications still important? Yes. If for no other reason that many companies use them as a basic screening tool to decide whose resume gets read and whose gets passed. Are certifications enough to guarantee a good job? Absolutely not. Many people don't like to hear this, but the time is approaching when IT workers are going to be held to the same standards as other career fields. You're going to need an education along with the certification if you're going to get your foot in the door in the future. Finally, you want to know how to earn a six figure salary in IT. The way you do this is to love your work. You're dealing with a highly dynamic field where today's hot skill can be tomorrow's ticket to the unemployment line (ask the COBOL programmers). This means that the learning NEVER stops. If you're not studying the latest technology every day, you're going to find yourself useless very quickly. Re: CCNA/CCNP home Lab setup [7:60727]
I've found that it's useful to have a variety of kit, and as many routers as possible. Cisco prices on eBay have fallen through the floor. A 4000 series with NP-4Ts is a good frame switch. 2500 are good workhorses, best to get one with an ISDN BRI (I didn't and regretted it). Once you have a couple of ethernet-based routers, don't discount token-ring 2500s if they are cheap or any 3000 series router. 3000s are ludicrously cheap at the moment and can run 2500 IOS 12.0 images. Don't buy multiple 2600s unless you're rich. Two 12-port switches allows better practise that one 24-port. rgds Marc "McManus, Robert BGI SDC" wrote: > > Could someone give me advice on what I would need (models) for a home lab > setup for my CCNA/CCNP training? Hi there, I suggest get 3 2600 series routers. Even though 2500 would also do, 2600 has some value added services which the 2500 don't offer. RE: CCNA/CCNP home Lab setup [7:60727]
do you plan on doing lab practice on ATM Frame Relay ISDN Modem Dial If so then you need 2 or 3 routers and atleast one switch. The routers need capability for all the above since those topics are covered in the various CCNP test. Its not necessary to do labs for the CCNP, but it helps. The current required score is an 849 out of possible 1000 points. Of course they give you the first 300 points for just showing up for the test. Best of Luck on the test. It has gotten harder with the new simulations now added to the test. Get some practice on a router or two before attempting the actual test. Christopher M. Heffner Strategic Network Solutions, Inc. According to the Cisco website, they don't publish passing scores anymore. No, CCNA is very easy compared CCNP except the CCNP(switching), remaining are not harder than CCNA, requires indepth study ,,, Sunil Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=49848&t=49829 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
CCNA Exam vs. BSCN Exam? [7:49829]
All, I passed the CCNA, and found it varied as far as what types of questions the asked. Is the Routing exam the same. So far the study material seems very focused on OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP. RE: CCNA Exam vs. BSCN Exam? [7:49829]
Yes, it is focused on EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP. I just took it a couple of weeks ago for a client commitment and it didn't stray from those topics (at least on my exam). RE: Help me on my CCNA Design Project [7:48715]
First of all, if you feel you need routing at gigabit-speeds, you probably need layer 3 switching. A Cat 4000 or 6500 with an RSM would do nicely. Of course, if this is anything but on paper, you've probably priced yourself out of the market. As for the GBIC question... Are you talking about the 2 connectors on a fiber GBIC? If so, you need both for one connection. One is transmit and the over is receive and they need to cross; Tx to Rx, Rx to Tx. Help me on my CCNA Design Project [7:48715]
At the moment I am doing a design project for my CCNA classes. But I am having some problems. I have chosen the 3550-48 & 3550-24 switches and was wondering what kind of router I should choose. Most of the routers only have 10/100 Ethernet ports but I would like a router with at least two gigabit ports that will fit directly into the 3550-48 switch GBIC. Also with the switches they both have two fibre ports which a GBIC card fits directly into one of them which then gives you two ports on the GBIC. Does this then give you 1Gbps per port on the GBIC? Hope someone can help me. Re: teaching CCNA [7:45489]
Back in 1999, most vendor certs were pretty intolerant regarding the use of abbreviations in answers to "fill-in-the-blank" syntax questions. I suspect that had more to do with limitations of the testing software and the overwhelming desire to not compensate people for the effort required to rectify the situation rather than an insistence that people type thousands of more characters than they need to in order to do their job. - Original Message - From: "Priscilla Oppenheimer" To: Sent: Thursday, May 30, 2002 11:02 PM Subject: teaching CCNA [7:45489] > I will be teaching a CCNA class next week. RE: teaching CCNA [7:45489]
I ended up taking the 607 test twice (test crashed the first time after I completed it and the score report was nothing but uninterpreted PCL code) and neither time did I have any questions which specifically related to the Cat 1900. The router simulator does allow you to use abbreviations. Just not the ones from IOS 11.x :) Something that I thought was interesting was that they even managed to make it "slow". Even though I was on a PIII, when it came time to save, it still took a few seconds to "build the configuration", just like you'd find on an old 2500. Re: teaching CCNA [7:45489]
Priscilla, I'm fairly certain that you will need to know something about the Cat 1900 switch. I've been teaching CCNA as a CCAI for a couple of months now and we have a rack of equipment purchased from Cisco consisting of 5 x Cisco 2500's and 2 x 1900 switches. We have a Lab Topology setup that is used throughout Sem II & Sem III which utilises this equipment. This lab Setup is the very same that appears in the 'diagram' questions on the #640-607. A typical question would be 'Host A cannot see Host E' Why ? You then have to diagnose the diagram/network within 15 minutes using Cisco IOS or clicking on the PC to get its config or clicking on the switch etc. The 1900 is menu driven but you can drop out to command line mode, which I would recommend. Not sure if you can use abbreviations. Probably wouldn't risk it bacause of possible typo bugs in the software. It may well have been lifted from the source code of the IOS and cross-compiled, but I'd stick to the full command just in case. Token Ring hasn't been covered in any detail. Just mention it in comparison to Ethernet i.e 802.5 v 802.3, deterministic v non-deterministic but don't go into any real detail. There still looking for the core knowledge being OSI model compared to TCP/IP (Yuk), subnetting, Access Control Lists and Hands on Config experience. RE: teaching CCNA [7:45489]
I have been teaching the CCNA classes for 3 years and I have always used the Sybex book which has a corresponding Router Simulator product. I also took the new 607 exam when it was released and provided an article on my findings. :) http://www.tcpmag.com/column.asp?id=EXAM&cid=152 Good luck. -Original Message- From: Priscilla Oppenheimer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, May 30, 2002 8:03 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: teaching CCNA [7:45489] I will be teaching a CCNA class next week. I've never taught an intro class before. ;-) The textbook will be Wendell Odom's "Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide." I didn't choose it, but I'm fine with it. I have some questions, however: Wendell covers Catalyst 1900 configuration in quite a bit of detail. Cisco's list of topics for 640-607 doesn't include this, so I'm not planning to teach it, and in fact, we won't have a switch in the lab probably. Will this be OK? Does anyone know if the 640-607 test has Catalyst 1900 configuration questions?? Does anyone know if the test (which now includes router simulation questions) allows one to use abbreviations for commands? (such as cop run start instead of copy running-config startup-config)? Token Ring doesn't support multicast (He says this many times.) I know IEEE 802.5 does "officially" support it. I also know that many Token Ring NICs didn't support it in the early 1990s. Didn't they fix that??? I would have thought that Token Ring NIC vendors would have added support for multicast by now. Thanks! Re: teaching CCNA [7:45489]
Hi Priscilla, I used that book amoung others for the exam that I took recently. I did not run into any switch configuration command questions on the test...only switching theory..but that does not mean someone else might not get a question like that. I guess it's my opinion that studying switch configs on paper is sufficient for the CCNA exam. Although Odom goes into more detail on many topics than is necessary for the exam...I'm glad I studied the topics because it is helping me see the bigger picture as I study for the BSCN exam. In regards to the router sim...it does allow abbr. I used copy run start, Ctrl+Z and en. However, the simulation is rather buggy. I had trouble "telnetting" to the routers in the simulation. After trying various things for about 15 minutes it finally worked. Also...it did not save my configuration completely so I had to re-enter and do a copy run start a couple of times. I'm not sure about the Token Ring thing. Hope that helps.
