RE: CCDA (DESGN 640-861) ....... A BEAST ???? [7:73770]
What exactly are you lacking experience with; IPv6, VoIP, SAFE, Network Design? This new exam is much more difficult than the previous version. As a matter of opinion, too difficult for an associate exam! If you haven't run across it yet, I also wrote an exam review located here; http://www.tcpmag.com/exams/article.asp?EditorialsID=71 Have you also read Pricilla's book--Top Down Network Design? -Original Message- From: Cisco Nuts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, August 09, 2003 7:39 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: CCDA (DESGN 640-861) ... A BEAST [7:73770] Appreciate your feedback Willy.Thank you. Question: What do you mean when you say that you have "given this course already a couple of times"? Do you mean you are a Cisco trainer, a CCSP sort of? Any pointers that you can provide? NDA withstanding ofcourse!! This is the only certification left for me and the one I need to have my official CCDP cert. mailed to me and thus I have been searching the web for any useful info. pertaining to this exam? What are the type of questions, ex. a long case study for me to read first and then answer questions based on that case study? How many? Arcane questions on SAFE and IPV6?? What's the format like? Any specific topics that I need to dwell on? I am using the Cisco Press CCDA exam certification guide for the old exam as well as the new Sybex book by Lammle and Barkl (not very useful IMHO). Are there anything else like exams/notes that I can buy that would be helpful? Thank you. Again, so what does this mean? Can I recertify before my certification expires? What if I re-take the CCNA exam now? Does the valid certification time limit start from the time that I take the new exam? I don't have to wait until my certification expires before I renew my certification, do I? If not, then why would a "professional" level exam not renew my certification based upon the time that I took the "professional" exam? I'm confused... I've never seen that kind of question...so I don't know. Cisco exam retakes require a 72 hour wait so in your case don't take the exam on the 26th since that would take you into the weekend. We don't have any exam centers here that are open on the weekend. Appreciate your feedback Willy.Thank you. Thank you. Sincerely, CN >From: "Willy Schoots" >To: "'Cisco Nuts'" >Subject: RE: CCDA (DESGN 640-861) ... In addition to that, how many times have you heard that we should disable CDP for security reasons? I'm sure there are some companies that aren't allowed to run CDP for this reason. Then again, that's usually a big company that probably wouldn't want to run ODR in the first place. John >>> Tom Martin 7/21/03 10:05:02 AM >>> John, I have come across ODR in production a couple of times. Up until recently I had thought that ODR worked quite well for hub and spoke topologies... My most recent involvement with ODR occurred when replacing a 2621 with a 3745, which was the hub of the hub-and-spoke topology. I quickly learned that the 3745 doesn't enable CDP by default. I was also reminded that Cisco doesn't save configuration commands that are considered default... What ended up happening was CDP was not enabled by default and when I enabled it ("cdp run") the command wouldn't save because it was considered a "default" command! Each time the router booted CDP was disabled again! I recommend to everyone that ODR not be used in a Cisco production environment. RE: CCDA: changes in syllabus. [7:72380]
The new CCDA course is very different. I haven't taken the test but I bet it's very different also. Here is a synopsis of the syllabus for the new course: The first module is on design methodologies. It teaches top-down network design. The recommended reading is "Top-Down Network Design." :-) Seriously, that's what the course suggests. The second module is on structuring and modularizing the network. Although it teaches the classic 3-layer hierarchical model (core, distribution, and access), it also focuses on Cisco's new SAFE architecture. See here for a SAFE study guide: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/779/largeent/issues/security/safe.html The third module is on campus design. If you've taken any of Cisco's other tests, you should be OK, with this. It covers STP, VLANs, VTP, ISL, 802.1Q. The fourth module is on WANs. Same stuff you've heard before probably. The fifth module is IP addressing. Only new thing is a new focus on IPv6. The sixth module is on routing protocols. Top-Down Network Design would meet your needs there with a couple exceptions. The new course covers IS-IS and On Demand Routing (ODR). (Does anyone really use ODR, I wonder??) The seventh module is on security. SAFE should help there. The eight module is on Voice Transport in gory details. Get some voice books or read up on voice stuff and Cisco's AVVID here: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/netsol/netwarch/ns19/net_solution_home.html http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/access/sc/rel9/soln/voip20/impl/scigdesn.htm http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/788/pkt-voice-general/7.html The ninth module is on network management. Andy Barkl wrote an article about the new CCDA for TCP Magazine. See here: http://tcpmag.com/Exams/article.asp?EditorialsID=71 Good luck! RE: CCDA Study material [7:71111]
I recently used the knowledgenet BSCI course. I used it as a supplement to my studying and not my main source. it was very good in explaining the technology and hands on labs just not sure that it covered all of the details needed to pass the exam. I signed up for the exam at www.computer.org this is the IEEE site. If you join as a member of IEEE $100.00 US fee/yr you get access to the courses that they have available. I paid $44.00 only since it is prorated over the year. I did BSCI they also have Advanced Cisco wireless and other tech courses. It is a very cheap resource for studying $44.00 all you can study not bad. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Lopez, Robert Sent: Wednesday, June 25, 2003 9:12 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: CCDA Study material [7:7] Group, To answer the question regarding Knowledgenet from thread below...I've recently purchased a few courses from Knowledgenet - cvoice, dqos and evodd. It's basically 6 weeks of self/web-based study with hands on lab scenarios and sample exam questions for each class. My first course was cvoice. I went through the coursework just about everyday for six weeks. At the end of the six weeks I sat the cvoice exam and passed - the only material used was from knowledgenet and the cisco website - a little hand-on experience helped as well. I'm in the process of sitting the exam for dqos - this upcoming Friday... I don't know much about Knowledgenet. It appears to not be a real, carbon-based classroom where you go in person to the site and can easily interract with the instructor and other people taking the class, which is a major benefit in a design class. In fact, the exercises for DESGN are designed to be done with a team. Can you do that with this Web-based training? It's possible that they do a good job with their Web-based training and simulate the real world well. I just don't know. Cisco recommends that DESGN be taught with a simulator that will let you do some design tasks. They recommend OPNET. Does Knowledgenet let you use OPNET? I would ask a few questions before shelling out a lot of money for the Knowlegenet course. Has anyone else here on GroupStudy used them? If you do use them, let us know how it goes. Group, To answer the question regarding Knowledgenet from thread below...I've recently purchased a few courses from Knowledgenet - cvoice, dqos and evodd. Very nice article, Andy. Unfortunately, the hyperlinks didn't post with the article (things like "you can see the xxx here" has no link). Most links I can chase down, but there are a few I can't discern. Do you have a copy of the aricle with links that you are allowed to send? If so, I'd appreciate a copy. RE: CCDA Study material [7:71111]
Priscilla has hit the nail on the head as usual! If you don't have the experience with Cisco's AVVID, SAFE and voice architecture design, you should wait a few months for the self-study guides from companies such as Cisco Press and Sybex before tacking the CCDA DESGN 640-861 exam. I took the exam late last year when it was in beta and it's a real bear for an "intro-level" certification. I wrote an exam review you might want to look at for more information. Good luck! http://tcpmag.com/Exams/article.asp?EditorialsID=71 -Original Message- From: Priscilla Oppenheimer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, June 23, 2003 3:55 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: CCDA Study material [7:7] CiscoNewbie wrote: > > Hi all. Your best bet would be to take the instructor-led class, if you can afford it. With a good instructor, I think DESGN could be a really great class. It's got tons of meat now, much more than before. It has a big focus on systems analysis as it is taught at universities, as a real discipline, not just a bunch of hand-waving. The class also has a huge scope, covering almost everything you ever wanted to know related to campus and enterprise networks, from business (which they call social or organizational) goals, technical goals, topologies, architectures, modular design, addressing (including IPv6), routing, voice, network management, and security. One focus is on the SAFE architecture, so look that up on Cisco's site and learn it. There's also some AVVID stuff Many of the course modules are partially based on my book Top-Down Network Design. Many of the modules say that Top-Down Network Design is recommended reading. Top-Down Network Design doesn't cover some newer topics, though, such as SAFE and AVVID, although it did cover voice in a limited fashion, since Cisco has been harping on that for years now. DESGN covers voice in gory detail, however. It seems to have all of the old CVOICE course in it. Each module in DESGN has many chapters, each of which is literally hundreds of pages long. The person turning it into a book (not me unfortunately) is going to have a heyday. :-) I haven't taken the new test, but if it really tests all that's in the course, it's going to be one of the hardest tests out there (and that's a good thing. It's about time design got some respect. :-) Anyway, bottom line: if you can take the older version of the test, then there's lots of study materials. If you have to take the newer version, then you should take the instructor-led DESGN class or wait a few months for study material. RE: CCDA & CCDP [7:70637]
Go to Ciscopress.com and do a search on the test numbers. Cisco Press books are sometimes difficult to read, but this is where you can get the most pertinent information and is usually what the test is based upon. RE: CCDA case study in Exam [7:59068]
Hi All, I also found CCDA funny - after some time, I developed a don't-care-attitude and just started making intelligent guesses (I thought this is what they wanted!). I was surprised when I got 815/1000. I really did not care! Cheers! RE: CCDA case study in Exam [7:59068]
Sliver, That was the worst one I took. And, I hate it because of case study questions. As a non-native english speaker, I spent 50% of my time to read the cases over and over. I read the questions and answered them in less than 30% of remain time. Passed with 912/1000. For each of unclear questions (or answers) to me, I didn't spend longer then 15" to think. Guessed and clicked to save time going with the others. For this kind of exams; the more I spend for them when sitting, the worse result I get. I use this tactic to avoid the long reading questions too. CIT and CID are harder but I like them better. Re: CCDA case study in Exam [7:59068]
I agree. I hated this test. I wouldn't have minded it as much if they organized the questions better. e.g. Case Study 1 Question About Case Study 1 Question About Case Study 1 Question About Case Study 1 Case Study 2 Question About Case Study 2 Question About Case Study 2 Question About Case Study 2 But on my test it was all over the place. E.g. Case Study 1 - Question About Case Study 1 Case Study 2- Question About Case Study 2 Case Study 1 - Question About Case Study 1 Case Study 3 - Question About Case Study 3 Case Study 2- Question About Case Study 2 Case Study 5- Question About Case Study 5 FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: CCDA case study in Exam [7:59068]
This test has multiple case studies and multiple questions per case study. Yes, you can refer back to the case studies for all the questions. You will lose average of 3 min. per question as you have to refer back to the case study. After spending over an hour on case studies (hint hint), my head was aching after the exam. IMO, CCIE written was easier. -Original Message- From: Sliver [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, December 12, 2002 8:29 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: CCDA case study in Exam [7:59068] Hi GroupStudy, I heard that there is case studies in the CCDA exam. I would like to know how does it works? Is it that they gave you a case and the next few question will ask you some multiple choice questions that is related to that case? Can I go back to the case study during those questions? Thanx.. Marko. -Original Message- From: Cisco Systems Inc [mailto:CiscoCCDA@;mail.ciscomessage.com] Sent: ~ripjudagur, 12. nsvember 2002. 16:03 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: CCDA Certification Updates On November 12, 2002 Cisco announces its redesigned CCDA(r) certification track, which features the new CCDA exam # 640-861 and the new course, Designing for Cisco Internetwork Solutions (DESGN). The new DESGN five-day, instructor-led course will teach how to design Cisco network infrastructures. The existing DCN course will retire on January 6, 2003, and the existing DCN exam #640-441 will retire on March 5, 2003. A CCDA certification is achieved upon successful completion of the DESGN exam, and is valid for two years. The recommended training includes CCNA Basics and DESGN. The CCDA program is the first step toward achieving CCDP(r) certification (CCNA(r) certification is also required), and a redesigned CCDP track exam and course will be released around February 2003. The CCDP related course, Designing Cisco Network Service Architectures (ARCH), builds upon the DESGN foundation, teaching designers how to architect network services and solutions using that infrastructure. While the DESGN course addresses mainly infrastructure and network service issues, the ARCH will address mainly network services and solutions. What's New in DESGN Because networks and network services are growing exponentially complex, designing a network separately becomes impossible. Instead, the network is divided into modules such as the enterprise edge, campus, and service provider edge, with each module designed separately. Designers must ensure the entire solution responds optimally to business and technical needs, and that the network is highly available. A strategic network solution requires content networking, storage application networking, and voice applications. Successful network designs require critical modern infrastructure services (such as wireless access) and network services (such as security and management, quality of service, and multicast). Hmm. Doesn't bode well for the beta. It sounds like you would have to have access to the beta class to pass the beta test. That's not good. The old CCDA was passable by someone with design experience even if they didn't know Cisco made-up marketing terms. And I think that was a good thing. :-) Also, the old class taught design methods that could be applied regardless of new marketing "solutions." The new approach may be more cookbook or based on specific models, which I think would be unfortunate. If you read most descriptions of specific models, they say "this may not work for your network." It's better to teach methods that will work for any network. Back to the so-called Enterprise Composite Network Model, my guess is that it has something to do with Cisco's SAFE security blueprint. how you will succeed if you don't have lots of reading before you get into real practical...?? huh... you got the point, one reference book is not enough. the CID book from ciscopress is pretty good; again, find something else too, such as the cisco website, it has lots of materials, that's my recommendation. If you are talking about just books and study guides then Amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com can't be beat. Most of the time they will even have used materials for almost half off the cost of the new. Just make sure you are getting the exact same thing. I've never really needed any more than one of the Cisco press books and an Exam Cram. yeah ditto that, if u want to design nets the da and dp are the way to go, if u want to maintain/support, the na and np are preferable. Cosmin, I did CCNP first and then decided to do CCDP which requires CCDA. The reason is that any reference to designing networks is positive. RE: CCDA after CCNP, How tough???? [7:10960]
Why not do both? If you can complete the CCNP track, then technically speaking, you will have no trouble with the CCDA exam. You must understand, however, that the CCDA exam is not one to test you on technical understanding but rather on your communication skills. If you have not dealt with non-technical mamangement making technical decisions, such as you will see as a consultant, then I would advise you to read a design book or 2 (Top Down Network Design is EXCELLENT) and then get some practice tests, such as Boson. These will help you understand and cope with the format of the test. --- Rik Guyler -Original Message- From: Mohamed El Komy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, July 10, 2001 5:51 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: CCDA after CCNP, How tough [7:10960] I also have same situation.I just finished my CCNP and i still whether it worth to go through the desidn track or not. Total agreement with the comments regarding the poor quality of the exam, however, I would not expect dramatic benefits from the upgraded examination. The current study materials should get you there for 640-025, and I'd focus away from Stratacom and other 'platform' specifics for the newer exam. --- "Sean C." wrote: > CID - 100 questions - Passing is 755 Final score > based on scale of 300 to > 1000 (ie - I think some questions are weighted > heavier for scoring > purposes). CID - 100 questions - Passing is 755 Final score based on scale of 300 to 1000 (ie - I think some questions are weighted heavier for scoring purposes). Unlike CCIE written where there are 100 questions and each is worth 1 point. I'm copying an old rant of mine. Check the GroupStudy archives, there are tons of gripes with the CID: Took the CID last week and passed - 2nd attempt. The horror stories you have read about this test are true. The questions have misspellings (VALN instead of VLAN), some answers are written twice, one question address had a third octet of .286., etc. Couple this with the limited study material available and I think it would be wise to wait for the CID 4.0, when, hopefully, there will be more study material available. I used the CiscoPress book and the Boson #1 test. The Lammle book you own has the best section on StrataCom - the questions I had were could all be answered from Lammle's book. I agree with the general concensus: CiscoPress covers 50%, Lammle covers 50% between them you will know about 75% of the test. Good luck, Sean C. Hi Oletu, I've taken both the CCDA and the CCDP certs. For the CCDA I used the ever popular Oppenhiemer book 'Top-Down Network Design' and CiscoPress's CCDA Cert Guide. I thought the CCDA test was the easiest test out of all the Cisco tests I have taken. I think I could have passed it if I had taken it right after the NP tests without studying. Now, on the flip side, I thought the CCDP test was the hardest test I have taken out of any computer test (yes, including the CCIE written and all the MS tests). It took me a few times to pass that beast I only squeeked by. Good luck, Sean C. Testing design with multiple-choice questions and oversimplified case studies wasn't my idea! ;-) I wrote the Designing Cisco Networks Version 1.0 class. (I called it Designing Scalable Networks, actually.) It was an HTML-based class for internal Cisco Systems Engineers. It was simplified because the prerequisites to becoming a Cisco SE were already really high and the class didn't need to spell out the details. A lot of the materials were job aids -- charts that SEs could print and carry around in their pocket protectors -- not something that should EVER be asked in a "closed book" multiple-choice test. Somebody else turned my class into the certification program and it took on a life of its own, one that makes me cringe to be honest. Kids are like that. I thought CCDA never required CCNA but really I have no idea whether that's right. It doesn't matter anymore. Gee, I don't what kind of backlog you have in reading this list but I thought it was agreed that yes it has changed. Another poster confirmed as much in her posting (I'll let you find it in the archives) with information from a different source. Actually that post is farther down this very same email that you forwarded to the list. And I think I can remember that Priscilla commented that that change was before her CCDA time, I could be wrong on that. So, why are you picking on me? I thought things were going along great with just the right amount of humour. Of course if you didn't recognize the humour I apologize. So I guess you're saying that she is wrong also (the other poster of course) .. well so be it if that makes you happy. At least I'm not alone. In retrospect it is becoming far too easy to get into spats on this list. And thank-you for your compliment on my age.. Priscilla, Are you throwing the towel in?? I have always held you in extremely high esteem as the CCDA/DP guru -- who knows all about Cisco Design. Now, just because a published -- and only one at that -- at one time made an allegation that the CCNA was a DA prerequisite, you are doubting your own personal knowledge!! Shame, Shame . Stick to your guns. The real question is: What did Cisco say, and when did they say it?? [Not what Syngres said it!!!] Now, I've got to get back to my studies -- before my nap time. I think that most people just take the exams in that order: CCNA first then the CCDA. Re: CCDA [7:2971]
Hey! So I'm not loosing it - I was sure that was the case!! I can remember answering questions on this list about what you needed to get CCDA. And since Jenny has given me faith again - I have found another book: Global Knowledge Certification Press Syngress/Osborne - CCNP, Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting 4.0 Copyright 1999 ISBN 0-07-211912-8 which has a blurb on certification. Re: CCDA [7:2971]
It takes me by surprise, as I have a brochure from Geotrain (dating from about 1998 I think - yeah, I'm a bit of a packrat - I think I can throw it out now :-) that states that CCNA certification is a prerequisite for CCDA. At the time, test requirements for the CCDA were CCNA certification and CDS exam #9E0-004. CCDP required CCDA certification, ACRC, CLSC, CMTD and CID (or CCDA, foundation and CID). Re: CCDA [7:2971]
Yep, I concede and your track record can be considered as unscathed! Once Priscilla jumped in and said CCNA wasn't required I kinda knew I was mistaken (but I still had to look into a few books!) I just remembered that when I "boasted" passing CCNA back in 1998 (checked the date this time) that a few guys on the list dared me to take the CCDA without any extra studying as they thought that with "experience" it wasn't a big leap. So I linked the two together I guess. (took the test 3 days after CCNA and scraped by...) I won't get into the age thing since there is a wide gap :-) Kevin Wigle - Original Message - From: "Greg Macaulay" To: "Kevin Wigle" ; Sent: Friday, 04 May, 2001 21:11 Subject: RE: CCDA [7:2971] > Kevin, > > I checked the ICRC (Cisco Press Book) and all the Sybex series for (CCNP > 1.0) and the CCDA (Cisco Press Book) They all note that the CCNA is required > for the CCDP. Kevin, I checked the ICRC (Cisco Press Book) and all the Sybex series for (CCNP 1.0) and the CCDA (Cisco Press Book) They all note that the CCNA is required for the CCDP. But they also do not cite any CCNA req. for CCDA. Despite that, I still may be wrong -- which would be a rarity as I am a retired attorney/law professor and we are never wrong. Once I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken!! (Corny -- and probably not true!) As for your challenge re: my age -- I am certain that the FEderal Age Discrimination Laws must apply on this list However, at 56 -- I strongly suspect that my claim to being the oldest CCNP/DP will survive (What I really would have enjoyed, however, is a claim that I was the YOUNGEST such person -- but that passed me by during the American Civil War or thereabouts!!! Re: CCDA [7:2971]
CCDA never required CCNA. CCDP always has and still does. That takes a lot of people by surprise. I may be one of the older CCDPs!? I used to tell my age in hex, but it has letters in it now, so it's not a joke that normal people get. not sure if you're asking how old the oldest CCNP/CCDP is... (hey Greg!!!) or how long ago CCDA required CCNA or how old I am... I'll assume the second. I did CCNA/CCDA around Dec 1999/Jan 2000 and I thought CCDA required it then. Re: CCDA [7:2971]
Greg, to my recollection - yes, CCNA was once required to get CCDA. That's what I did "in the beginning". But the easiest way to check is probably to look at the front of many of the older CCxx books - they all had a chapter on certification and what was required. Unfortunately, I don't have one here on site but I own just about all of them. So I'll check later unless someone else has one handy and looks. I just posted that because to me one-exam certs can't really be accepted as anything more than an absolute beginning and I thought that CCNA was good for that. Design is generally considered a more "experienced" occupation and therefore to me CCDA was also ok at needing 2 exams. To me, lowering the CCDA to an one exam cert takes some of the "shine" off of it. Of course since I hold CCNP/CCDP the point for me is moot but back at the "beginning" I thought that CCDA was a "higher" cert than CCNA. Now they're somewhat equal. (again in my opinion) Kevin Wigle p.s. - I can't remember reading you providing any proof of "Oldest CCNP/DP on Earth" care to elaborate??? :-) - Original Message ----- From: Greg Macaulay To: Kevin Wigle ; Sent: Friday, May 04, 2001 12:13 PM Subject: RE: CCDA [7:2971] > Kevin, > > I'm not sure that you're not still sleepin' -- so to speak > > I just checked the CCDA and CCDP requirements. Kevin, I'm not sure that you're not still sleepin' -- so to speak I just checked the CCDA and CCDP requirements. You are correct that the CCNA is NOT a prerequisite for the CCDA (I'm too old to recall whether the CCNA WAS ONCE a requirement!!-- but I don't think so!). However, in order to obtain the CCDP designation, you must have the CCNA (not to mention the other reqs.) So, IMHO I don't think that a watering down has occurred. Re: CCDA Question [7:3180]
looks like the question just has a mistake on the letter of the correct answer. Answer E is correct and the explanation says "deny all" Some practice exams aren't very good when they jumble up the order of the answers. The answer files don't adapt to the new letter an answer may get. I betcha at one time "deny all" was selection A. Nope, you're doing ok - in one way finding the mistakes is also a good study aid! :-) (I have sent many an email to our buddies at Boson) Kevin Wigle - Original Message - From: Jim Dixon To: Sent: Friday, May 04, 2001 10:13 AM Subject: CCDA Question [7:3180] > Hello Group, > > I think this question has the wrong idea about which answer is correct here. > What does the group think? > Am I missing something? > > Sorry your Answer (E) is Incorrect! > > CCDA - Cisco Certified Design Associate > Access lists can be used to control traffic on an internetwork.
