Hello Everyone,
I'll be leaving the list now. Maybe be back when I am more motivated.

Just note to everyone that while I did learn a lot here, the most
valuable thing I learned was to look it up myself before asking for
help.

Good Luck and Don't forget the blueberries.

2000-12-29 Thread Kane, Christopher A.

Thanks to all of you on the list for your many contributions, study related
and otherwise. I have learned much from this list. Not just commands and
configs but also theory and attitudes towards both newer and older
technologies.

A special thanks to Chuck, Priscilla, Leigh Anne and Howard. My bookshelves
at work and home are filling up fast.

Thanks also to the others that always seem to lab things up much faster than
I get around to doing.

I look forward to next year as I finish my CCNP, move on to the DP and
whatever else may come up.

Ah.. the old "bad equipment" ruse!

I see a bit of this myself. Customers order drop ship because they don't
want to pay for professional services. They can't get it to work. Therefore
the equipment is bad. The only way to prove otherwise is to configure it
correctly. Voila - free services

Glad you were able to use your skills to save everyone a of trouble.

Everyone here has an image to maintain :)

For added effect you should requisition an electric screwdiver to make

2000-10-13 Thread Phil Barker

Boy oh Boy. What a week.

Had a 2 Meg WAN link swamped. Everyone complaining.
Noticed that the preferred route (hopwise) wasn't
being taken. It was preferring taking about 4 hops
over another 2 Meg link then HSSI at 6Meg followed by
two Fast Eth Segs. Protocol is EIGRP.

After banging my head for a while against the door and
ripping through Doylies book on TCP/IP, I noticed that
the delay on the HSSI interface was set to 200
microseconds. Whereas the default for 56K to 45 Meg is
2 microsecs. Whipped it over to 2 and
survived.

Thanks to Mr Geoff Doyle

Does anyone know of a bug in IOS 11.2(18)P for HSSI
interfaces setting a 200 microsecond default ?

Is out to TAC anyway, but just wondered.

Regards,

Phil.

Thanks - CID passed

2000-08-07 Thread Ed Moss

Thanks to everyone in the group... I passed CID this morning which completes
the CCDP track.

I completed the test in one hour They provide two hours to obtain a
minimum 65% on 100 questions.

To study, I used only the Cisco Press Books "Cisco Internetwork Design",
and followed this up with "Advanced Network Design". I also used Cisco's
Self Paced Training "SNA/IP Solutions for Systems Engineers". CCO was
invaluable as I also read through the document "ATM Network Design" and
reviewed the overviews and specs of various ATM products since the Cisco
Press books leave much of this information out.

As many have stated on the list, the majority of the test centers around
Network/Protocol/WAN design. The test objectives published by Cisco are an
accurate representation of what is on the test.

This test was "easier" than DCN as I didn't have to worry about case
studies, however there wasn't as much networking theory, but much more info
to recall. If you didn't read it... or don't know it... you most likely wont
get the correct answer.

General test taking... trying to eliminate obvious wrong answers wont help
much since most of the statements or potential answers are correct, but may
not relate to the question. For example... a question may be related to the
distribution layer but makes accurate statements about all three
layers... end result... you have to know which one fits into each layer.

Now its off to CCIE

It probably contained the word "NOSOB" (spelt

Try spelling it backwards to beat the filter "NOSOB"

Good News and Thanks

2001-02-13 Thread Akbar Kara

First the news, last evening, I passed :) the CCIE written
qualification exam (80/100). I am keen on getting started with
preparation for the lab exam. Fortunately, my employer has invested in
lab equipment and one of my co-worker/lab-buddy is also a CCIE hopeful.

Any advice would be appreciated. Are there web links for practice lab
scenarios?

Many thanks to all the folks on this list as I have been getting a
wealth of knowledge and insight on wide range of topics which are
discussed here. I will continue to follow and hopefully be in a
position to contribute.

Priscilla, Howard, John Neiberger and other top talkers... I admire you
guys for your knowledge and willingness to share it. Keep it up.

Cheers,

Akbar Kara

2000-10-13 Thread Lance Hubbard

A fellow group-member and I saw this at our place of employment about a year
ago. Indeed, when running EIGRP in large, highly meshed networks with
variable link rates (1.5Mb/s - 6Mb/s in our case) it is often necessary to
audit your traffic patterns and tweek your EIGRP metrics. (Bandwidth, delay,
reliablity, load, MTU). We ended up doing as you did, and modified the
delay metric to solve the issue.

.can't say I know about any bugs...

cheers,

Lance

Subject: Thanks - CID passed

Again... thanks for everyone's help.

Thanks to Group Members

2000-08-11 Thread Ms. Maria

Hello Group,

I have finished CCNP. It's all because of support and encouragement I got
from many members of Groupstudy. I am very thankful to you guys. I am up to
CCIE Written now, and hopefully will be going after a full- time cisco job,
after I am done with written. This world looks a lot bright to me now. I
hope that I keep doing well with all good luck wishes I got, and people like
me (who are sturggling hard to get a good life) get successful one day.

Thanks again! :>

Maria

p.s. This mail is in reference to the mail that I sent way back with the
subject "Cisco for Women?"

Congrats.

Hard efforts should pay back now. But the world is not that way. I had
finished CCNP in March and have also finished CCIE written, but unable to
find an entry level job. That is how the certified people without exp are
treated in Toronto (Canada). My best advise would be try to gain hands-on
exp as much possible.

All the best.

2000-08-14 Thread Roger Dellaca

I owe the group a thank you, for I passed the CCIE written - 70% required, achieved
89%. Besides this list (which I have mostly just been lurking in, but starting to
contribute), I used:

prior materials I had for CCNP - Sybex ACRC, CIT & CLSC books, Cisco Press BCRAN book

Cisco website - Internetwork Technologies Overview, Internetwork Design Guide, lots of
other stuff

Doyle Routing TCP/IP (did the questions, but not the config & troubleshooting exercies
- I will use those now to study for lab)

Halabi Internet Routing Architectures

Caslow Bridges Switches & Routers for CCIE (also light on the configs, which I will
revisit for the lab)

Certificationzone.com (all the white papers & practice questions, I will start with
the labs now)

An ATM book I can't remember

I admit using the questions in the All in one study Guide by Giles, because of the
sheer number of questions in the book, but I checked other sources for a lot of the
answers.

some Cisco equipment at work

The advice from the CCIE power session at Networkers in Las Vegas.

(Is my time up yet? I feel like I'm at the Oscars)

The passing score is 706, and no I have not passed Routing 2.0 not Switching
2.0 yet.

I used the following to prepare:

http://www.insync.net/~drews/bcran/

I would have liked to start with Routing 2.0 instead, but there aren't
really any study guides out there yet.

I practiced on two 2501's, one 2509 and one 1604.

Following the link to the place where you bought the book finds that you
spent $60.00 for the book at Amazon.  You could have gotten it for
about $43.00 at www.bookpool.com

Actually not :-)

I never buy books at Amazon anymore (unless I can't find them anywhere
else).

I always buy them at http://www.booksamillion.com if they have them, or look
at http://www.bookpool.com for a good price and availability.

The reason for the amazon link is that that is where I could find a picture
of the book, and they have good reviews.

Team,
This morning I was able to pass the DQoS test, wow...what a rideThe test
is very hard if you don't have
the Course Book and the reason is because all the information need for the
test is very well put and organized by the course. All the information
required for the test is on Cisco's web but is very hard to find it, the
test follow the blueprint by the book. I want to give my special thanks to
Chuck Larrieu (The Long and Winding Road) for his support. I really
recommend this test for those who are in the process of taking the lab. The
following link will take you where you can
find all the information need for this test except the Course Book (fully
recommended). Well now to get back to the books for the CVOICE (another
animal) test.

A good starting point for the QoS on CCO is the following:

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

2001-03-21 Thread Buri, Heather H

I want to thank everyone for your insights and suggestions. I guess I did
not mean to come across as complaining too much. I really had high hopes
for this class and maybe I overprepared for the course because I wanted to
get a lot out of it. I had already read the Cisco BSCN course book as well
as was 3/4 of the way through Doyle's book before my class started. I know
they have to cover a lot of the basics but I just thought one day on RIP was
a little much.

I will take Priscilla's and Pam's suggestion and write a letter to Global
Knowledge and let them know about my experience. Maybe they will let me
audit the course at a later date. I still plan on attempting the test in
April after some more review. I have a small home lab so I may be able to
simulate some of the BGP stuff at home.

Anyways, I did not realize that you could find out about the instructor's by
calling Global directly. I registered online and they don't give much
information there. I will remember this for the future. Also, our
instructor never mentioned you could get a refund or reschedule during the
first day. But I will bring this up in the letter to Global Knowledge.

Thanks everyone and this is a great list with lots of knowledgeable people
on it!

Sincerely,

Heather Buri

Yipe. I just now noticed this thread, and it breaks my heart to hear
stories like this.

Global Knowledge classes are guaranteed. I'm not sure Heather could get
her money back inasmuch as she did sit the entire class, but I am certain
they will let her sit the class again with a more experienced instructor.
Hey, I'm teaching BSCN in Arlington, VA for Global Knowledge the week of
April 23 . . . not scheduled for any Texas trips any time soon.

For future reference, Global Knowledge WILL refund your money or
reschedule you if you return your materials to the instructor by the end
of the first day. Instructors are supposed to emphasize that during the
introductory remarks.

When you schedule the class, talk to the customer service people and ask
them about the instructor. The best questions to ask are, "how long has
this person been a Cisco-certified instructor," and "how many times has
this person taught this class." The instructor schedules are published
about a month in advance of the classes.

I hope you won't get a bad impression of all Global Knowledge instructors
because of this one. I have had the distinct pleasure of auditing BSCN,
CATM and OSPF/BGP classes since joining Global Knowledge, and the
instructors in each case were outstanding in every way, but beyond
outstanding in terms of technical knowledge. And I'm a tough critic,
believe me. For example, how about having CATM taught by someone who
participated in the development of the protocols as a member of the ATM
Forum working groups? Or BGP taught by someone whose consulting practice
focuses on designing networks for national ISPs. And of course, the
groupstudy.com founder, Paul Borghese, is a Global Knowledge instructor.
;-)

I would beg to differ and agree with Brian. The content doesn't match half
of what is on the market today for the CCIE study guides. In addition,
there is the errata that's still available by McGraw-Hill.
Combined with what one would consider 'perfect' studying material as one
should use while pursuing your CCIE, because one book doesn't prepare you
for every case, you cannot go wrong at this price. We've used it and it has
assisted three of our study members to pass the written CCIE exam. Please
give it a rest, there are no 'perfect' books that doesn't contain some
errors.

Thanks ! but need more help.

2000-10-02 Thread RAUNIYAR RAJEEV

HI all,

That has helped me visualized the whole port concept a lot better now. I
now understand how a local application chooses ats source port
etc... however I still dont know how a local network can close some of its
OWN port and effectively block entrance to a remote network/server.

I gave an example of colleges blocking Napster. Suppose Napter keeps a
well-known port open... maybe 80. all you have to do to log in is teh
specify the destination port of 80 and bingo, you're in. the source port
is randomly picked from teh lists of ephemeral ports you have
available. to in theory, a college cannot block access to a remote server
without blocking ALL remote access (closing all out-going ports). i know
that im wrong somewhere, since that HAS been done before. i just need you
to explain to me which part have i misunderstood.

thanks for the long reply, btw. it really did help me clear up a lot of
things.

Re: Summerization (Doyle's book) Thanks

2000-11-05 Thread Daniel

I really appreciate the fast answers I got from all of you..
After researching a lot deeper(should of done this before posting, dah?), I
remembered that I had seen good examples of summerization
in one of my books. Guess what? Caslow has (page 306) several good examples.

What I reaslized I was doing was that I forgot about "contiguous subnets"
and was
using the "common one bit" rather than the "common bit". so:
   192.168.16.0/24.0001
   192.168.17.0/24.0001 0001

the "common bit is the "0" at the /23 position

The way I see it I was advertising a lot of subnets and that would of
confused the routing tables.
"Black holes" also comes to mind.

Thanks again

Daniel

Re: Summerization (Doyle's book) Thanks

2000-11-05 Thread Brian

also, think of it like:

/25 = 2 x /26
/24 = 2 x /25
/23 = 2 x /24
/22 = 2 x /23
/21 = 2 x /22
etc

then the only thing you need to make sure of is that the boundries are
correct.

Re: thanks people [7:10974]

2001-07-04 Thread Jennifer Cribbs

I didn't actually fail dos, but I failed the a+os with a 603. But it feels
like I failed a dos test. As I started digging through
what I could remember on the test, I got hung up on a couple of issues and
mainly io.sys and msdos.sys and what was
actually going on in the boot process. Jon Krabbenschmidt has given me a
ton of information concerning the boot
process and went out of his way to help meThanks Jon...!

And Dom.Stocqueler, I appologize for being a little
testy,dkjhelklsjflkjal;skj...it happens to me on occasion and
usually when I am deeply concentrating on an issue. My sense of humor goes
byby

===
And since I don't care if I get flamed anymore for being non cisco or having
a non cisco comment and already having
the answer to my question, I will post my original mail that Jon helped me
with plus the answer he gave me and a couple
of others alsoIt might refresh everyone's memory on something noone
really thinks about much anymore, but I just
find it so interesting.Maybe it will help someone else. Thank you to
the smart people on this site. There were a
couple of other very good answers also, but these two cover the gist of what
I wanted to know.

Jenn
===

My question:
---
I just recently failed my a+ os test and so I am digging again through my
book. Now just so you will know the book I am
using is "course technology" and is entitled "Enhanced a+guide to Managing
and Maintaing Your PC". I also have the a+ book by Michael Myers, but it is
not the book I am referring to in this
particular scenerio/question. What I am doing is looking up a few specific
questions I was unsure of
on my test and sometimes I get a little carried away and get too deep which
is probable the case here, but here goes.

One of the questions was a t/f question and it read: The IO.sys file
executes the config.sys. That seems very simple and so I put true for my
answer and
believed it to be true, but i was not absolutely sure of this, so I started
reading. The other day after the
test, in reading about the boot process, it says that when the 'dos
operating system' is loaded, when the io.sys is
finished it turns control over to the msdos.sys and that there is a program
'within the
msdos.sys' that executes the config.sys file. The key words I am seeing here
is the words"within the msdos.sys".

Then a couple of pages on further in the book, it is discussing the
95 operating sys and the boot process. It said that io.sys executes the
config.sys when
booting. Does this mean that the initial boot process is different
depending on
whether you are booting up dos or a gui/windows type environment?
If that is so, when loading dos os, what is the name of the program within
msdos.sys that executes the config.sys file? It didn't say.

In case you have this book, the first portion is on page 73 in the
second paragraph under step 3. This is where it discusses the program with
the msdos.sys that exe's the config.sys file. On os-95, this is on page 77,
step 5.

And if you don't have the book, this is specifically what it says:

On page 73 and is referring to dos here:

"The IO.sys file contains more bios sw. MSDOS.sys contains sw to
manage files, run applications sw, and interface with hw. Once these two
files are loaded into memory, the boot record program is no longer needed,
and control turns to a 'program' stored in msdos.sys. This program looks on
the
hard drive for a file named CONFIG.sys. CONFIG.sys is the first os file that
you, as a user, can change. After config.sys is exectuted, MSDOS.sys looks
for
another dos file named command.com. This file has three parts: more code to
manage i/o, programs for internal dos commands, such as copy and dir, and a
short program that looks for another file name AUTOEXEC.bat."

Now, is very close to specifically says that when loading dos os that the
i/o.sys does not execute the config.sys. It says that a program within
msdos.sys does that.

Then on page 77 in referring to 95, it says:

step 5: Again, just as with dos, io.sys loads. In fact io.sys is
areally a small core dos module. io.sys looks for a config.sys file, and if
found, the config.sys file executes.

step 6: after config.sys is complete, io.sys looks for msdos.sys.
The role of msdos.sys in 95 is much different from its role
in dos.
=
My comments on this.

If for dos, the msdos.sys has an internal program that
executes config.sys and in windows, the io.sys executes the config.sys, how
can you answer a question with a true or
false answer if the real answer is.it depends on the operating sys being
loaded.?

correct or not?

So now, my question is what is the name of the program in
msdos.sys that actually does the executing of the config.sys?

Opinions..comments...

Sorry this is so long and I also realize th

I would suggest getting the exam cram for 2.0 and the exam cram flash cards
for 2.0, which come with a test engine for the 2.0 exam. Both will probably
cost you less than one transcender.

I agree with you. I did purchase the the exam cram flash cards. They also
come with a CD. I believe I only paid $23 which is substantially less than
the out dated Transcender.
The flash cards are great for preparing/reviewing for the exam.

Re: Thanks for the memory

2000-08-27 Thread John Hardman

Hi

There are two types of memory in a 2500 that you need to worry about.

1) Flash. 2500's have 2 slots for flash. Your best bet is to find 2 8MB
flash SIMMs. As if you are going to run more than IP, then most of the
images exceed 8MB. If you are going to only run IP and less than 12.1 images
then 2 4MB SIMMs (or 1 8MB) will do you.

Keep im mind if you have up to date boot PROMs in it, you can use just about
any flash from other cisco routers.

2) DRAM. These are just parity 72pin SIMMs, which you can get from the
Internet for about $50. 8MB is good for most things.

Passed Written, Thanks! [7:20079]

2001-09-15 Thread cassidy smith

All, Thanks so much for your guidence!

I completed CCNP/CCDP first.

Then I read the Sybex(Lammle) CCIE Study Guide. I used the Boson Tests #1
and #2, and quickly realized I was not ready for some of the ATM questions.
I picked up the McGrawHill(Giles) CCIE study guide, and used it and the
Cisco Web Site to fill in the blanks. For Token Ring I used the RIF study
aid that is free here at the GroupStudy "StudyNotes" as well as the Rossi
Paper at CCPREP.
I used some of the free study aids at Bosons site, they have some faster
ways to derive your IP access list wildcards and IP summary ranges.

Token Ring "Rif" Links:
 http://www.groupstudy.com/notes/notepages/rif2.html
 http://www.ccprep.com/resources/news/archives/Token_Ring2.pdf

For summary addressing and wildcards:
http://www.boson.com/promo/freestuff.htm#guides

I passed with an 83% I did pretty well in all areas except for "Performance
Management" section, if anyone knows what that section's focous was I would
appreciate a response. Perhaps the fact that I don't know is indicitive as
to why I did not do so well in that area, I had really wanted to hit a 90% :-)

If I had it to do over, I would have started with assessing myself with the
boson's Having a CCNP/DP gets you about 80% there, I could have saved about
2 weeks if I just found out in the begining that 20% that I needed to focus
on.

I am off to start studies for the LAB, since I don't know where else to
start, I will ask the groupstudy Lab forum moderator if I can join after I
schedule my Lab Exam.

Thanks again for all the advice. Good Luck to those persuing this crazy
certification. :-)

Team,
This morning I was able to pass the DQoS test, wow...what a rideThe test
is very hard if you don't have
the Course Book and the reason is because all the information need for the
test is very well put and organized by the course.

Kerry,
Search the groupstudy history, someone just asked the same question less
than a week ago. Anyways I liked McGraw Hill BCRAN book. I said BCRAN not
BCSN.
(Aparently the McGraw Hill BCSN really sucks and everyone rants about it I
just wanted to further clarify I liked the McGraw Hill BCRAN I never read
their BCSN I took the ACRC, so I don't know if that one is any good or not,
but I did like their BCRAN? McGraw Hill's BCRAN is basically the Ciscopress
BCRAN book, but easier to read)

Thanks Jennifer and another simple questions!

2001-01-12 Thread Max Rion

Thanks for your heartful reply! Think u will help me a lot many times. :)

Well another simple question are here

1. Difference between 'reset' and 'reload' command!

2. In uBR 924, there are some led and DSNR is one of them. Is it Digital
Signal to Noise Ratio? When checking SNR in IOS, the smaller numbers
(including minus figures) are the better performancer than bigger ones?

3. When uBR 924 couldn't give IPs to the connected LANs (not because boot
problems but somewhat problems unknown), someone said this as 'Ranging
problem'. Is it correct?

4. When you use 'show stac'?

WowI think I am getting better because of you all. Thanks for letting me
asking on! Have a nice day!
