No you don't (have a couple of VLANs, some with ISL and others with 802.1q).
The trunking protocol is not an attribute of a VLAN, it is an attribute of a
physical (trunking) port. You have some VLANs, put them on whatever trunk
port you desire.

VLANs don't run trunk encapsulations, trunks do so I don't understand
your question. The trunk encap is how trunks label, (tag) VLANs. If
you mean can you run either or both encap types on the same switch then
yes you can. Bot no you can't encap ISL and 802.1Q on the same trunk.

They are very expensive! I was able to get one through our purchase of an
AVVID solution at work. I got it for training and I can run home and get it
for a hot spare if needed. I was told if I get my CCNP and Voice Specialist
I could have it so...
We did get these at a very good price. CISCO was really pushing to install
the IPCC over the AVAYA 3Com solutions we where looking at. I just hope
we did not jump in over our heads. But anything has to be better then the
old ROLM we had.

RE: Trunking ISl and 802.1q [7:74059]

2003-08-16 Thread Paul Ingram
Hello,
Kind of confused on switch types and trunking.
Do I understand correctly that WS-c2950X can not do ISL?
And that WS-C2912-XL-EN can?
Can 19xx do ISL or 802.1q?
I am going of this link
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk389/tk390/technologies_configuration_examp
le09186a00800949fd.shtml

Can some point me to a 1900 link? I can seem to fine a good one. Or
anything else that might help. I like to try and figure this stuff out
instead of being hand feed but I am stumped. Maybe I need to walk away I
have been at it all day. :)

I am trying to finish putting my lab together and need to know to finish
purchasing the switches.

Also how many makes a good lab? Or do I need any more? How many are good to
have for practicing SPT and trunking.

I currently have
1-3550 (this the new PoE type)
1-1912 (enterprise edition)
1- 1201 (not sure if this good for much)

I have the chance to get 2 WS-C2912-XL-EN and am not sure if I need both or
just one.

The native Vlan on the 5500 is Vlan 13.

The config I posted was from a 4500M router with a NP-6e module installed.
Like I said before I have don't have a problem with 2 of the 3 vlans on the

and to anywhere on that Vlan.

I think starting with the release of 12.2 you are able to trunk on 10Mb

From the original message posted you can see that it is really ethernet

configured 802.1q on router ethernet ports before with IOS 12.1.

Any comments on this?

RE: TRUNKING MODES [7:70700]

2003-06-16 Thread grant grant123nj
Hi, Mwalie

yes, the trunk link can be established even if between different VTP domain,
the following is the detailed explaination.

A trunk link can be negotiated between two switches only if both switches
belong to the same VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) management domain. If the
two switches are in different VTP domains and
trunking is desired between them, the trunk links must be set to on or
nonegotiate mode. This setting will force the trunk to be established.

I thought there will be no trunking, but the answer says they
will trunk - even with different management domains?

Hi

When using vlan trunking from a router, for example in a router on a stick

traffic, like traffic between the vlans and out of the router through

No, subinterfaces on a trunked port fully support acl's in the same
manner as physical interfaces. Same for other services such as NAT,
CBAC, policy routing, etc.

ACL's should still work on the router. It will treat a vlan

Subject: VLAN Trunking + Access lista [7:63739]

 Hi

When using vlan trunking from a router, for example in a
router on a stick
enviroment, I would create subinterfaces on the ethernet
interface on the
router, does that in some way limit the use of
access-lista to controle
traffic, like traffic between the vlans and out of the
router through
 another interface ?

RE: native vlan, trunking question [7:63309]

Native VLAN is the vlan which is is untagged with VLAN information or
tags. IE, by default, VLAN 1 is untagged, meaning other devices which do not
understand vlan's, can understand traffic from a vlan 1 port (for example).

Re: native vlan, trunking question [7:63309]

2003-02-19 Thread Karen E Young
A native VLAN is the VLAN that that port uses when trunking breaks down.
Thats it. If you don't set it to a specific VLAN in the config, then the
native VLAN will be the default vlan. On cisco, this is VLAN 1.

Normally, the trunk is up and running and the native vlan doesn't come into
play. However, if the trunking goes down for any reason, the port reverts to
the native vlan. At that point, only traffic on that vlan/subnet will get
through the port. Typicxally, I will set the native vlan of trunking ports
to the vlan that I'm using for network management so that I can get to the
switch remotely if something goes wrong.

Hope this helps,

Karen

If the switch really is a WS-C2924-XL, ie. an original 2900XL switch,
trunking isn't supported at all. You need a WS-C2924-XL-EN.

Question on wireless Vlan Trunking BOOTPC issues -Please [7:62628]

2003-02-06 Thread brett spunt
I am setting up a wireless bridge and Access point to trunk 2 vlans -
One is Vlan 11 ( Voice ), and One is default Vlan 1. Here is the issue.

If on vlan 11, (by associated SSID mapped to vlan 11)wireless client (ip
phone) gets a ip assigned by dhcp no problem in vlan 11. (dhcp server
for the voice vlan subnet sits across the WAN, and AP pipes in through a
dot1q trunk port into a 3524 that has a switchport access vlan 11 port
piped directly to a 3660 router that only runs the vlan 11 Subnet
(10.46.3.0/24). The data vlan 1, and voice vlan 11 ( voice ) were,
before this wireless addition 2 flat networks with no intervlan routing,
and no trunking involved anywhere in the network. All people in the data
vlan 1, pipe into regular switch ports with uplink to a cat 6006,
connected to a 3640 that only has main interface routing the vlan 1
layer 3 subnet across the WAN. The dhcp server for data vlan 1 sits on
vlan 1 locally(10.44.185.0/21)

Issue at hand -

If I put my laptop on Vlan 1 using wireless (by associated SSID)and give
myself a static ip, I have full connectivity on VLAN 1. (trunking is
fine, and both vlans flow through the switch fabric). If I set my laptop
to DHCP on SSID VLAN 1, DHCP does not work? Protocol analyzer produces
nothing but shows me issuing bootpc requests with no responses.

If I pipe directly into the 3524 switch (using switchport access vlan 1)
that the Access Point trunks directly into, and use DHCP, I pick up an
ip right away, so I have pinned it down to a issue with BOOTPC broadcast
going across the Proper broadcast domain (vlan1) when connecting
wireless?

I think the issue, is because the access point has first associated with
the DHCP server reachable Via vlan 11, which existed prior to adding
data vlan to the picture of the wireless setup (through helper address
on vlan 11's subnet's router), and read that the Cisco 350 access
point's do associate with the last DHCP server they contacted, so I
increased the timeout on the AP to search for multiple DHCP servers, but
to no avail?

I realize this is a weird setup, and I did not design, and am only there
to make the 2 vlans work and utilize dhcp functionality either from a IP
phone, or A pc on the data VLAN using wireless( BY associated SSID ) All
criteria has been met, minus DHCP functionality from VLAN 1 ?

Has anyone run into this, or something similar? Is there an issue when
trunking vlans using wireless using multiple DHCP servers on different
VLANS?

Any comments or help would be appreciated

Note- The customer does not want to intervlan route, and use a single
DHCP server with multiple scopes? I discussed this possibility.

Thanks!

trunking 10/100 access ports for avaya ip phone [7:62045]

2003-01-28 Thread Lopez, Robert
Anyone have any insight on the pro's or con's regarding applying trunks to
all 10/100 access ports on a 6509. Presently, I have a cisco voIP
environment - using a data vlan and an auxiliary vlan for voice traffic.

I've been asked to make an avaya phone work in this environment. Input from
Avaya had me make the access port a trunk, make the data vlan the default
vlan and apply the aux vlan to the port as well. It does work - my question
is in regards to performance and/or design best practices. TIA

Just a little different perspective below...

with 2 vlans in each group.

That's one way of looking at it. But it might help to keep things clear in
your mind if you consider that there really are four HSRP groups. You're
simply using each group number (and, as has been pointed out, the same
virtual MAC) twice.

1 router will be the active for 1
group (2 of the vlans) and the other router will be the active
for the other group (2 vlans). On each subinterface for each
router for each vlan, it has a unique virtual HSRP IP address.
I originally thought that all would use the same virtual HSRP
 IP address.

Did you mean that all VLANs in a group would use the same virtual address?
If so, you really need to consider looking at things the way I described
above. Think about it. One VLAN per subnet, right? (yes you can have more
than one subnet per VLAN but you can't have more than one VLAN per subnet)
So how would a host in VLAN 10 use the virtual IP of VLAN 12 as a gateway
(or vice versa)? Even if the VLANs/subnets are in the same group, they're
still in different networks. How could a host with ip address 10.1.1.50/24
use a virtual IP of 10.1.2.1/24 as a gateway? The host would need a gateway
to reach the gateway since they're in different layer 3 networks.

You are saying that there should be 4 groups (1 for
each vlan) instead of the 2 groups that we have?? Or is it OK
with 2 groups and the 4 unique virtual HSRP IP addresses on
 each router??

It's OK. But to the extent possible, at least in a real network, I'd think
you would want to have a 1:1 ratio between HSRP groups and VLANs.

This type of setup wasn't covered together in our class, just
vlans and HSRP seperately. But in this lab we have Vlans
running thru HSRP router doing ISL trunking and the routers are
also running BGP and EIGRP to connect to a remote router. AHHH!

 Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Scott

Your instructor is right. We have a pretty big Vlanned network (3000
nodes). The only way for the traffic originating from one subnet to get to
another subnet is to go through a router. Therefore, each Vlan (or subnet)
needs an individual gateway (router) to get to other subnets. That is why
you need a standby HSRP group for each subnet.

Side note - Cisco recommends that Vlan correspond to subnets - it is easier
to keep track of things. Hope this helps

Dennis,

It's better to have a unique HSRP group for each VLAN. Cisco bases the
virtual MAC address on the group. If you reuse the group number, you'll have
duplicate MAC addresses. Granted, they're on seperate VLANs and shouldn't
matter, but I had a Cat4000 that didn't like it at all, and gave me lots of
logged messages about MACs moving around.

hsrp isl trunking [7:57896]

2002-11-22 Thread dennis cherry
In my Cisco Academy class, we are doing an lab with a lot of different
topics rolled into one lab. We have 2 routers set up with hsrp and has a
virtual ip address. Now a 4000 switch has 4 vlans configured on it and to
use isl trunking to the hsrp routers. These routers have 4 subinterfaces on
the fastethernet port going to the switch (one subinterface per vlan on each
router). On the 4000 switch we set up a default gateway to the hsrp virtual
ip address. But on the hsrp routers when we set up the subinterfaces and
enter the standby command for the virtual ip address, I thought that we use
the hsrp virtual ip address but the instructor says no. She says we need to
put in the vlan number as part of the virtual ip address. Example:
subinterface number for vlan 20...Fa0/0.20, ip address...10.200.20.2,
standby ip address...10.200.20.1. And for vlan 30 it would be 10.200.30.1
for the virtual ip address. I thought that all subinterfaces would use the
same hsrp virtual ip address. I tried to find more info on the Cisco site,
but could not. Is this actually correct?? Why would the virtual ip address
be different for each vlan??

802.1q trunking [7:57772]

2002-11-20 Thread Kris Waters
Everyone,

Let me explain what I am trying to do. My main building was set up years ago
with a Class C address scheme. I need to change this for a number of reasons
and am planning to move it to a 10.X.X.X scheme. I would like to do this on
a gradual basis.

My building contains the following equipment:

7206VXR router that does internal routing. I have one FastEthernet port on
this router.

One Catalyst 4006 (Sup2, set based code) switch on the third floor. Both
these devices run the latest code.

The first and second floors have Catalyst 3500 switches with fiber between
floors. A VTP domain is set up between the 3 switches.

It was suggested to me to put 3 subinterfaces on the fastethernet port on
the router and then trunk them to the switch (or switches). I'm not quite
sure of the best way to go about doing this. I've read numerous tac
articles, but a little more guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a sample of the code I used on the 7206 to create the subinterfaces:
interface FastEthernet0/0.1
 encapsulation dot1Q 111
 ip address 10.50.1.1 255.255.255.0

What do I do now? The router is plugged directly into port 4/10 on the 4006.
Do I create a VLAN 111 on the 4006? Any replies can be copies directly to me
at [EMAIL PROTECTED] as well as to the board.

TIA

RE: 802.1q trunking [7:57772]

2002-11-20 Thread Roberts, Larry
Is this all 1 flat VLAN now ? If so, read below:

If so , and you just want to migrate, I would assign a secondary address to
the FE port on the Router that is a 10.x.x.x scheme that you want.
This will allow you to have both active and not need to worry about what
port that a PC is plugged into.
Otherwise, you will be changing the IP of the PC then changing its port VLAN
membership on the switch.

The method that you are trying will work, but it's a more work then you need
to do if your just migrating from one IP name space to the other.

If you assign a secondary address to the router, all you will need to do is
to change the IP of the PC's and reboot.
If your running DHCP, change its scope so it hands out 10.x.x.x address's
and as the current leases expire, they will get a new one. Once all the old
address space is gone, just go into the router and type the ip address
10.x.x.x.x command without secondary on the end. This will move this IP to
the primary address and remove the old address from the router. Tada, your
done.

If you want to use separate subnets on each floor, then you would need to
use sub-interfaces which I am sure others will cover in detail. If not, I
will jump back in.

Thanks

Larry

Subject: 802.1q trunking [7:57772]

Here is a sample of the code I used on the 7206 to create the subinterfaces:
interface FastEthernet0/0.1 encapsulation dot1Q 111 ip address 10.50.1.1
255.255.255.0

What do I do now? The router is plugged directly into port 4/10 on the 4006.
Do I create a VLAN 111 on the 4006? Any replies can be copies directly to me
at [EMAIL PROTECTED] as well as to the board.

TIA
Kris

DON'T TRUST THE CODE ON THE 35XX SERIES SWITCHES.

Sorry for yelling, but its that important. I've seen repeated
situations like this:

router switch 1 switch 2

With a daisy chained configuration like this I've seen multiple
instances where a vlan that is done correctly on the router won't work
on switch 2, even though all the links are set up for trunking. I've
tried forcing this situation with allowed vlan configs and so forth, and
its just a pain in the you-know-what. It seems less of a hassle with the
most recent code, but I never go in and offer a design like that - its
just way, way too risky. PA-FE-TX are about $500 on the aftermarket -
have them buy you a couple for the 7206, run lines to the switches, and
handle each one as an individual connection.

Hi Paul,

Does ethernet interface support trunking? (isl and dot1.q, or just one
 of those)?

The reason for asking is all the doco i ever read only say cisco
supports trunking on both fast ethernet and gigabit ethernet switch
links, as well as aggregated fast ang gigabit etherchannel links

Sounds like trunking over ethernet is not supported.

Cisco states that you need to have a FastEthernet (100 Mb/s) or above to
support trunking. Hence, trunking on Ethernet (10 Mb/s) interface is not
supported.

However, if you have only e.g. 2 VLANs and wish to route traffic between
them, you can use a router with 2*10 Mbps interface and it will still work.
But if you have 10 VLANs then it would be better to get a router with 100
Mbps support and perform trunking with the switch.

Hello,
Well, the link provided below is really good, I didn4t know it.
However, I do have a question: I searched for ISL feature with the router
1750 selected, and it was found, then I repeated the search selecting the
router 1751 (since 1750 is discontinued) and it looks there is not ISL
support avalaible for this model (there is only 802.1q support). Don4t you
think there is probably an error?.
Which is the smallest router than can support ISL or 802.1q?

Thanks

Is that doable on a 2500 series router? Basically, I want to configure
something like this:

Switch has
VLAN 10
VLAN 20
VLAN 30

I want to set up 802.1Q trunking between the switch and 2500 such that:

VLAN10 goes to Ethernet 0.10
VLAN20 goes to Ethernet 0.20
VLAN30 goes to Ethernet 0.30

Just wanted to clarify what it is that I would like to do. I just wasn't
sure if the 2500 router support 802.1Q or if this can even be done.

TIA,

Hi All,

I am building a new LAN, and I wish to use 802.10 as the encaps type for my
VTP domain.

I am also, getting some NEC IP Telephones. Does any know, if I can use the
802.10 to trunk to the phone ? Or do you need to use .1q ?

Thanks all,

John

VLAN Trunking [7:49976]

2002-07-28 Thread John Brandis

G'day all.

Got a question regarding VLAN trunking in a switched environment. Say for
example, I have a Catalyst 5509 in my network at the core, and then I have
lower end catalyst switch's with a gigabit port on each. In this example,
lets say I have 14 VLANS to connect, however I only have 8 gigabit ports on
my Catalyst 5509. In this case, the customer NEEDS gigabit access back to
the core from the distribution layer.

My question is, would it be better to:

a). Just buy another module of 8 gigabit ports and connect every VLAN's
distribution layer back to the Catalyst gigabit ports

b). Something else ?

Thanks for all your help and time. I appreciate it.

Well there's some information missing. I see you only have 8 gig
ports, but where do VLANs come into play there? We need more

yes, you must change the default frame size on the ethernet side of both
bridges to 1522 (default 1518). As far as the radio is concern it will pass
the frames out over the wireless. You will need a switch on the other end of
the bridge to recieve the frames and break out the vlans.

Nope, that's for 802.1Q. ISL has a 27-byte header.

An 802.1q frame size is modified with a 4 byte field that is inserted
between the SA and the type or length field. Therefore the max frame size is
1522. The 340 series connect to the lan @ 10BaseT therfore they could not be
connected to a trunkport. The 350 series bridges can connect @ 10/100 BaseT
therefore they can be connected to a Trunk Port. 802.1q can be carried over
access and trunk links. ISL can only be carried over a trunk link.
The trunk port on both switches will need to be set to nonegotiate This is
assuming you are connecting to a 350 series bridge.

Actually, 802.1q adds four bytes, ISL encapsulation makes the frame much
larger (by 30 bytes) I so the increase from 1518 to 1522 would make
sense for dot1q and an increase from 1518 to 1548 would be needed for ISL
(if it's even supported on the 802.11 stuff, but I can't speak on that).

An ISL frame can be as big as 1518 + 30 = 1548 bytes. The original frame is
encapsulated in a 26-byte header and a 4-byte CRC.

An 802.1Q frame can be as big as 1522 bytes. 802.1Q inserts a 4-byte header
immediately the destination and source MAC addresses (and source-routing
information, if present) of the frame to be transmitted, which could have
already been 1518 bytes.

RE: Trunking over Aironet bridge? [7:42833]

2002-04-29 Thread Rik Guyler

I agree. Change the MTU on the bridges. I have a customer with 5 remote
sites connected via 802.11b and trunking across all 5 and I have to increase
the MTU.

What I would love to see is an update to the Aironet code that supports the
actual trunking header so my bridge management interfaces could be on a
non-native VLAN. I tend to make the native VLAN (Dot1Q) the most active
VLAN and not the default VLAN 1. Unfortunately, in this scenario, the
bridges won't communicate in VLAN 1 as these frames will be tagged and the
bridges don't understand the tags.

Maybe some day...

states that the min. ios ver and feature set for isl/802.q trunking on a

Is there any way that it can be done with 12.0.7T or 12.0.5T1IP/IPX feature

Can someone please confirm this?
Thank you.

RE: ISL Trunking from a h/w's perspective [7:39246]

2002-03-27 Thread Daniel Cotts

Answer #1 Sc0 is a virtual port. Think of it as a mini-PC in your switch
that provides an address for management functions such as telnet. If you
have physical access to your switch then the console port is the easiest way
to configure your switch. If Sc0 is configured on the switch and you can
connect to a link or port connected to the switch then you can telnet to the
switch to configure it.
Answer #2 If your question is really something like I have a Cat5K with a
Sup III blade that does not have any interface module - how do I configure
trunking to this switch? It depends on what other ports exist on the
switch. Do a show port capabilities for each module. It will show if the
module can be used for ISL trunking.
Side note: Sup III interface modules come up on eBay from time to time.

described. The information you received from Cisco pertains to ISL
 trunks,
 which require a 100mb interface.

This was a good discussion. When I took my switching course, three
years ago, they were quite adamant that trunking could not be done on a
10 mb interface. Of course, that was before dot1q was available on the
routers. If someone took their courses a while back then they probably
aren't aware of the changes.

Your question is not clear. The SC0 port isn't relevant if you are
using trunking to connect two switches. All you have to do is SET
TRUNK mod/port ON on both switches and you are done.

If you are talking about routing between VLAN's then you need an RSM or
a router that is capable of ISL routing (2621 or better).

Do I need an Sc0 port when routing between Vlans? However, there's no
uplink module on neither of my supervisor engines. Would you know a s/w
work around without having to buy the module?

Re: ISL Trunking from a h/w's perspective [7:39246]

2002-03-22 Thread danny

The router's ethernet must be 100 full dux. You configure subinterfaces on
the ethernet. a trunking protocol must be configured on each sub with the
corresponding vlan #. The router will route between Vlans.

Hope this helps.

RE: ISL Trunking from a h/w's perspective [7:39246]

2002-03-22 Thread Larry Letterman

Yes, you need to set up the ethernet for 2 sub-interfaces
and set the encapsulation to isl and the isl id # to the vlan #
you set up on the switch. if the router config is correct the
router will route the vlans across the sub-interfaces on the router.

Thanks for all your responses.

One last question though. For external router, routing between vlans if
I have just one FastEthernet interface on the router can I route between
vlans?

The only time the SC0 interface comes into play is for telnet into the
box.
If you have any 100 MB ports on your switch, you can run trunking.

set trunk (mod/port) on isl

If this trunk is running into a router, you need to create the
subinterfaces
on the router to enable routing between VLANS.

int fa1/0.100
ip address (the subnet of the vlan)
encap isl (the vlan #)

Any ideas as how I can configure isl trunking without an Sc0 port on

RE: ISL Trunking from a h/w's perspective [7:39246]

2002-03-22 Thread Kent Hundley

Danny,

Sometimes even people who work for Cisco, even SE's who may by CCIE's, make
mistakes. The router never lies:

3620(config)#int ethernet 0/0.1
3620(config-subif)#encap ?
  dot1Q IEEE 802.1Q Virtual LAN
sdeIEEE 802.10 Virtual LAN - Secure Data Exchange

Notice this is an Ethernet, not FastEthernet, and that it does indeed allow
802.1q trunking.

ISL, on the other hand, does require FastEthernet. So maybe that is where
the confusion lies.

Regards,
Kent

Yes, you can. You can setup 802.1q trunks on a 10mb interface just as Dave

which require a 100mb interface.

Yeah. I think that's where I got confused. My bad. ISL does require 100
full.

Yes, you can. You can setup 802.1q trunks on a 10mb interface just as Dave
described. The information you received from Cisco pertains to ISL trunks,
 which require a 100mb interface.

no you can't. I got straight from cisco that they have to be 100 meg
 full-dux interfaces.

Actually on some platforms with the right IOS you can trunk 10 meg
ports:

  C3660B(config)#inter e2/0.1
  C3660B(config-subif)#encap dot1 1
  C3660B(config-subif)#

One last question though. For external router, routing between vlans
 if

The only time the SC0 interface comes into play is for telnet into
the
box.
If you have any 100 MB ports on your switch, you can run trunking.

set trunk (mod/port) on isl

If this trunk is running into a router, you need to create the
subinterfaces
on the router to enable routing between VLANS.

int fa1/0.100
ip address (the subnet of the vlan)
encap isl (the vlan #)

You dont have to configure SC0 interface to do isl or dot1q. Its
 only
 needed
 for management, telnet etc...

 Guys,

Any ideas as how I can configure isl trunking without an Sc0 port

Trunking multiple subnets on the same vlan /port [7:34975]

2002-02-09 Thread McHugh Randy

I have 15 different subnets on a eth 0/0 on a 2621 router with 15 secondary
addresses . I want to know if it is possible to change them to subinterfaces
and trunk more than one subnet accross a 2924 switch and pust more than one
subnet in the same vlan/port. That means putting more than one subnet on one
port in the same vlan. The subnets could be contiguous.

For instance:
ip address 64.41.x.241 255.255.255.248 secondary

ip address 64.41.x.249 255.255.255.248 secondary

Or most are discontiguous.

I did not think it could be done but just wanted to throw it out there to
see if anyone had a solution.
Thanks,
randy

RE: Trunking multiple subnets on the same vlan /port [7:34975]

2002-02-09 Thread Daniel Cotts

Try putting one subnet on each subinterface - each in turn will map to a
vlan. Trunk all the vlans to the switch. On the interfaces where you want
multiple vlans try configuring switchport multi vlan {ADD vlan-list |
REMOVE vlan-list} Valid IDs are from 1 to 1001. Separate nonconsecutive VLAN
IDs with a comma and no spaces; use a hyphen to designate a range of IDs. Do
not enter leading zeros.
Let us know if this works.

Re: VTP Trunking dangerous [7:33097]

2002-01-25 Thread 416South

I still don't see the need for VTP???

Have given the password thing some thought before but not sure if needed in
a smaller star topology type network. There are no other switchblocks.

A good stoning sounds awsome to me.

As far as bunnies and spanning tree I've made my core switch root bridge for
all routable vlans so there are no more recalculations and I don't wonder
why the network is out for 50 sec. while STP recalculats. Well it wouldn't
take that long in my simple star to calctopology environment (not much to
calculate)

Thanks for your input,

This is just my thoughts but i'm not entirely convinced that other people in
this environment will adhere to policy before dropping in a switch nor have
full knowledge of the possible effects and just dump in access switches in
the environment with out checking all the necessary vtp settings. As we all
know Cisco's default is Server for Trunking.

cheers
