Before grinding perhaps roughing the shape back in with a hammer?  Somthing
like a 3 lb.  A 5 lb held against the other side as a dolly.

Stus-List Recommended Masthead/Deck Light combo replacement

Hello all, I need to replace my masthead (steaming)/Deck Light.  The existing 
Aqua Signal light doesn't impress me as the deck light lens fell off at some 
point and the deck light didn't work.  So, Staying away from Aqua Signal. I've 
been looking and these light range in price from around $100 all the way up to 
well over $500.  I've seem Marine Beam, with good reviews, at about $125 and 
the Signal Mate, with good reviews at about $450. I don't want to spend 
unnecessarily but, I'm leaning toward the Signal Mate.   It was good 
reputation, been around a while and is supposed to be well made.  Of course the 
reviews on the Marine beam say they are well made.  There are plenty of bad 
reviews about the aqua signal.   I was hoping some of you could offer some

Be sure to examine your stringers and aft area glass around the keel. We did 
the same last summer and I have a 12k check on my desk from Geico to fix it. 
Caused stringer damage and some delamination as well when the after end 
compressed.

No problem.  Highly recommend.  I also did Aqua Signal LEDs on the
spreaders.  Very low profile and they work phenomenally - almost too bright!

The wires fit easily enough but really it is such a short run I'm not sure
it was beneficial.  I wired them to the same terminal as the deck light in
the deck/masthead combo.  I figure if I'm turning on one then I probably
want them all.  🤷‍♂️ Maybe not.  But if I want to change it the terminal
board is easily accessed in the overhead where the mast passes through the
deck.

The yard used awlgrip 2000, pearl gray if I recall correctly.  Stripped all
hardware and wiring, welded shut vestigial holes, ground them flat and then
primed and painted.  Re-wired, refitted, replaced all rod rigging.

I pretty sure the next question is going to be "how much?"

~1k for each rod and hardware.  I have 4 shrouds on each side plus head and
back.  10 total

~3k for the paint job alone

All said and done it came to roughly 20k

I had already done all of my standing rigging and having the same done to my 
mast this year!  It looks amazing!  I had to replace my lower spreaders though 
as, one of them had a crack.  36 year old aluminum, I figured it was best to 
replace rather than repair.  I may do the upper spreaders next year. I Already 
went with hella spreader lights, they have a red or white light option, and the 
Lunasea tricolor/strobe/anchor for top of the mast.  The final light, 
masthead/deck, Its looking like I'll go with the Marine beam! Thanks Josh! Danny

Would buying a C&C 40 with an original engine be a good idea in 2021? 

We are running some numbers here and it is basically a choice between
upgrading and replacing. Coquina is 48 years old now and it is time to do
some $$$ upgrades or buy another boat with much of the work done. We found a
used C&C 40 that looks gorgeous below, the interior beats most used boats of
that era. She seems in good shape, but the engine is original with 3,000+
hours. An Atomic 4 per the manual should be rebuilt at 3,000 hours if FWC, a
raw water cooled version would be very lucky to get that far in salt water.
The Yanmar is FWC. I frequently hear that diesels can last 10,000 hours, but
then again a significant number of boats from that era are for sale with new
engines.

Also re the rod rigging - the mast is out for the winter. With the rigging
easily accessed, what would the cost be of a rigging inspection to assure
that the rod is still good.

The yard used awlgrip 2000, pearl gray if I recall correctly.  Stripped all 
hardware and wiring, welded shut vestigial holes, ground them flat and then 
primed and painted.  Re-wired, refitted, replaced all rod rigging.

I pretty sure the next question is going to be "how much?"

 

~1k for each rod and hardware.  I have 4 shrouds on each side plus head and 
back.  10 total

IMHO I would not let the engine hours stop me!  If the engine was
maintained and the decks are dry you will never regret the decision!

Yanmars are notorious for needing new exhaust elbows, but you can get
stainless ones from HDI Marine for a reasonable price.

a lot, (obviously)

Good Morning Joe:  a suggestion while you are compiling a list of costs and
differences.  Please include the estimate for replacement of the engine with
a Yanmar Saildrive.  I did that on my 38MKII almost 15 years ago on the
recommendation of Rob Ball, and it has worked flawlessly and needs much less
in service.  I used the Yanmar 3YM30 with the SD20 Saildrive, and it comes
with the mounting sled that you just glass into the bottom of the boat.  The
sail drive works like an outboard, and other than regularly changing out the
engine oil, that lower unit gets changed every few years.  I installed a
Flex-O-Fold 2 blade prop and this boat not only goes faster than the old
Volvo with the 2 blade  Martec  but it backs down almost dead straight.  The
bonus is that the Yanmar weighs almost 100lbs less than the Volvo did. 

 

My installation was just short of 10K, and there's no more shaft, shaft
seal, etc.   

Just a thought before you commit to either one.

We replace the Atomic 4 with a Universal M-25XPB on Corsair.  Fit was 
great function was even greater.  The only issue we had was that the 
alternator was on the starboard side of the universal (viewed from 
engine front) and we had to modify the steps to accommodate.  Torresen 
Marine did the work and did a great job.

Nice boat – somewhat different price point than the original 40, but very 
tempting.

Weren’t you thinking of going to the dark side?

My wife and I looked around at trawler ads and found the following:
Right now really old trawlers are selling for close to twice what they sold for 
a year ago.

Most of them have teak decks and iron fuel tanks. Replacing the decks is huge 
$$$ and the tanks usually can’t be removed in one piece, you have to cut them 
apart. If they haven’t been replaced they will need to be at some point.

The use a lot more fuel than you might guess. They are economical compared to 
planning powerboats that get gallons per mile, but using Grand Banks for an 
example a single engine version gets maybe 3-4 MPG and a twin maybe 2 or 3. 

Docking them is harder than you might think. 95% of the time I need no help at 
all docking and undocking my boat, but either inside or on a flying bridge you 
have no access at all to any lines, so single-handed docking will be pain.

I’m still working full time and we want to explore more of Florida and beyond 
without having to take weeks off to do it. That, along with a few health 
issues, means it’s time for, if you pardon the term, The Next Generation of the 
Enterprise. 

There will be an Enterprise-C for certain, but it’s looking more and more 
doubtful she’ll be a sailboat.  I know it’s the wrong franchise, but we may be 
going over to The Dark Side.

Would buying a C&C 40 with an original engine be a good idea in 2021? 
We are running some numbers here and it is basically a choice between upgrading 
and replacing. Coquina is 48 years old now and it is time to do some $$$ 
upgrades or buy another boat with much of the work done. We found a used C&C 40 
that looks gorgeous below, the interior beats most used boats of that era. She 
seems in good shape, but the engine is original with 3,000+ hours. An Atomic 4 
per the manual should be rebuilt at 3,000 hours if FWC, a raw water cooled 
version would be very lucky to get that far in salt water. The Yanmar is FWC. I 
frequently hear that diesels can last 10,000 hours, but then again a 
significant number of boats from that era are for sale with new engines.
Also re the rod rigging – the mast is out for the winter. With the rigging 
easily accessed, what would the cost be of a rigging inspection to assure that 
the rod is still good.

I get the time issue. I am curious what you are looking at. What I found with 
the small fast powerboats I had was I could get a long way very quickly and 
then be utterly miserable getting home when the wind came up. You might make 
100 miles between breakfast and lunch and then take 3 days to get home.
I had to deliver a Krogen 40 once and that was kind of cool, it would chug 
along at 7-8 knots in pretty much any weather you would want to be out in. We 
got kinda interested in having a Dyer 29 as a high speed touring boat, they’ll 
run 15-20 knots economically in some pretty nasty weather and have enough room 
to sleep 2 and have a useable head that isn’t under a bunk, but the recent 
price run-up has put that idea out of reach for now.

I’m still working full time and we want to explore more of Florida and beyond 
without having to take weeks off to do it. That, along with a few health 
issues, means it’s time for, if you pardon the term, The Next Generation of the 
Enterprise.

There will be an Enterprise-C for certain, but it’s looking more and more 
doubtful she’ll be a sailboat.  I know it’s the wrong franchise, but we may be 
going over to The Dark Side.

I have a 1983 C&C 40 AC.
It has the original engine, Westerbeke W33 still going well.
I pulled it 2 yrs ago and redid seals, gaskets, injectors, damper plate etc.
This winter I had the tranny rebuilt.

If the engine is running fine and shows no issues then a light refresh like
I did might be the way to go. It is a fraction of the cost of a new one.
I expect to get a few more years out of mine and then will explore a
saildrive :-)
My engine is around 3500-4000hours.
Of course this is a diesel so maybe different than an Atomic 4.

I Have a C&C 99 with the standard Volvo Penta saildrive.  Curious about the
Flex-O-Fold.  I had a max prop on my last boat and loved it.  Was the
Flex-O-Fold a direct fit for the sail drive and what was the approx. cost?

Good Morning Joe:  a suggestion while you are compiling a list of costs and
differences.  Please include the estimate for replacement of the engine with
a Yanmar Saildrive.  I did that on my 38MKII almost 15 years ago on the
recommendation of Rob Ball, and it has worked flawlessly and needs much less
in service.  I used the Yanmar 3YM30 with the SD20 Saildrive, and it comes
with the mounting sled that you just glass into the bottom of the boat.  The
sail drive works like an outboard, and other than regularly changing out the
engine oil, that lower unit gets changed every few years.  I installed a
Flex-O-Fold 2 blade prop and this boat not only goes faster than the old
Volvo with the 2 blade  Martec  but it backs down almost dead straight.  The
bonus is that the Yanmar weighs almost 100lbs less than the Volvo did. 

 

My installation was just short of 10K, and there's no more shaft, shaft
seal, etc.   

Just a thought before you commit to either one.

Joe,

We are keeping an open mind, and much will depend one how soon and how much the 
Enterprise-B sells for. 

Big winds and big seas aren’t usually an issue here in Southwest Florida and 
we’d like to get to places like Tampa, Captiva Island, Sanibel, Naples, the 
Keys and even the east coast or Bahamas without spending days to get there. As 
Warp 7 (7 knots), Captiva is about 7 hours away. And, it would be great to hop 
down to Boca Grande or Port Charlotte for lunch without leaving before sunrise 
:-)

I think we are leaning towards a sedan bridge boat with an open cockpit. Ones 
that we have liked so far are the Meridian 341, the Carver 36 Mariner, the Sea 
Ray 400 SB, the Regal 4080 Commodore, Carver 41 CMY, and so on. 

I’m well aware of the fuel and maintenance costs along with the issues of 
docking (I plan to add thrusters, if the boat doesn’t have them), especially 
since my slip is pretty tight and requires some maneuvering to pull in — I 
couldn’t single-hand dock with this boat now anyway.

A masthead light is usually a combination nav/anchor light. Steaming/deck
lights are usually mounted on the front of the mast. If that's what you
need, I have a Forespar combination light, in excellent condition, that I

light doesn't impress me as the deck light lens fell off at some point and the 
deck light didn't work.  So, Staying away from Aqua Signal.



I've been looking and these light range in price from around $100 all the way 
up to well over $500.  I've seem Marine Beam, with good reviews, at about $125 
and the Signal Mate, with good reviews at about $450.



I don't want to spend unnecessarily but, I'm leaning toward the Signal Mate.   
It was good reputation, been around a while and is supposed to be well made.  
Of course the reviews on the Marine beam say they are well made.  There are 
plenty of bad reviews about the aqua signal.



I was hoping some of you could offer some experiences and advise.

I wouldn’t worry too much about a diesel with 3000+ hours on it—it’s not like a 
gasoline-powered engine.  That said, I lost my original engine with about 5000 
hours on it.  I lost the oil somehow along th ICW—it wasn’t due to the engine 
simply wearing out.  If you are using the boat just on the Chesapeake, it will 
take you a long time to get a lot of hours on the engine.

The C&C 40 is a nice boat!

I get what you're going through.  I'm 73 and my 
wife Lynn is only a few years behind me and we 
only cruise together; never with a crew except for day sails.


The idea of getting around to our favorite spots 
in hours instead of days is quite 
attractive.  But the related costs and noise have 
been serious issues.  The 37+ is just the perfect 
boat for us in so many ways it is hard to 
consider moving to the dark side.  Though it may 
be inevitable as we slowly deteriorate into 
useless blobs of rotting flesh...Gosh.. that got a little dark.


Anyway...best of luck and I hope you don;t get booted by Stu!

Nah…….Didn’t Stu have a trawler? We take all types here.

Speaking of power, none of the boats you mentioned will be going to the Bahamas 
except in fairly calm weather. You will have the issue of getting there fast 
and then being trapped. I once took a girl home from Walker’s Cay due to this. 
She came across about 120 miles of open ocean with her parents in a *Wellcraft 
18 footer*!

It was flat calm on Saturday and 30+ out of the northwest on Sunday with water 
coming across the runway. We were stuck too, but the next day it was a little 
calmer and I could take off. She needed to get back to school so we took her 
back to Florida. It was probably at least a week before that Wellcraft was 
leaving for home. That is bit of an extreme example, but the typical 30-40 foot 
powerboat wouldn’t have been leaving much sooner.

 

I used to be in the boat fixing and moving business and learned a lot 
delivering various powerboats various places. Always fun to have customer’s 
pride and joy motor yacht 3 stories tall with dinner-plate rudders and the wind 
howling.

There are a few on the market and if anyone would like to spice up this 
forum I would love to take a donation to keep up the variety. I was 
aboard one in the yard at NOTL plant and it was lovely, an adaptation of 
a commercial design they had done for the Government.  At 37ft they are 
currently $50k+ which puts them outa consideration for a 86yr 
skipper..sob

to entertain spouse with movies in the evening.Anybody tackled this?  Issues I

There are a few on the market and if anyone would like to spice up this forum I 
would love to take a donation to keep up the variety. I was aboard one in the 
yard at NOTL plant and it was lovely, an adaptation of a commercial design they 
had done for the Government.  At 37ft they are currently $50k+ which puts them 
outa consideration for a 86yr skipper..sob

Bill,

IMO — There are not many TVs and DVD players that can really hold up to marine 
weather unless you are running dehumidifiers all the time. Also, those digital 
antennas will get you some stations, but not a whole lot. 

Suggest you look into an iPad or other big tablet — there are mounts galore on 
Amazon for mounting in the cabin, you can watch or stream movies off the 
internet, and you’ll have another device for navigation, internet, and, in some 
cases, a repeater/control for your marine electronics. 

We use my iPad air to watch movies and TV (My cable service at home comes with 
free streaming so I can watch anything on the iPad that I can at home, 
including off the home DVR) and I put magnetic mounts in the main saloon and in 
the aft cabin over the bed. 

On our last cruise, we had a beautiful night, sat out in the cockpit and 
watched (big surprise) 2009’s "Star Trek”.

This may not exactly be the direction you want to go but I find old laptops
with USB DTV dongles and DVD players to be great options.  Pick one with an
available cigarette lighter charge adapter so that you can charge with
12v.  I like the Dell latitude series.  I have an e6540 that I use as a
daily.  It is quite functional as a desktop computer for all needs while
underway.  It has Bluetooth so connecting to the Bluetooth stereo is great
for filling the boat with sound OR connecting to wireless headphones to
enjoy privately while someone is sleeping.  I suppose that if you need
anything larger than a 15 inch screen this won't help.

With the DTV adapters you should consider an alternative antenna and USB
extension cable.  I would mount the USB adapter in a fixed location and
then connect with the USB extension when desired.  This would allow a semi
permanent connection to the antenna and a semi permanent antenna mount.
The antenna connects with a common SMA or SMB connector and can be easily
changed to a common digital antenna F coax cable.

I guess that Stu will have to kick half of me off the list. We have the “hobby 
refit” C&C 37  and we now have a 34’ Lobster boat/Chesapeake Bay Deadrise 
powerboat.

I enjoy the idea getting to Annapolis in hours as opposed to several days. 
Heating and air-conditioning are nice amenities. Trips down the ICW to visit 
friends in North Carolina are now on the table given that I’m only pulling 3’ 
6” instead of 6’ 8”.

We like to get friends out on the water for short, afternoon wine cruises in 
the summertime and it is much easier to get takers when there is an aft cockpit 
with shade and chairs and the boat doesn’t heel.

Sure, there’s always the noise from the diesel but when cruising at 8-10 knots 
it’s not bad. Running at cruising speed of 15-16 knots is a different issue. 
Fuel consumption at 9-10 knots is around 4.4 GPH and at 16 knots it is 8.6 GPH.

I like just being out on the water, no matter what type of vessel.

2000 coverage to be the same as bottom paint.  If you know how much bottom 
paint is needed to coat your boat, that's how much paint is needed for each 
coat of Interprotect.  They reccommend 4 to 5 coats.  I did 6 cause I did it in 
late fall and didn't want to bottom paint till Spring, so the last coat got 
sanded w 80 grit before bottom painting.  My 34R used about 3/4 of a gallon for 
each coat and the barrier coat is proud of the gel coat at the waterline and 
easier to bottom paint.  I alternated grey and white to apply five full coats 
and did a sixth coat in grey and had some left over that I've used over the 
years for touchups to the keel, etc.  Don't rush it.  Follow the directions and 
allow the 20min induction time after stirring.  I think I bought 2 gallons of 
Grey and two gallons of white, and bought another of grey at the end to paint 
the sacrificial coat and I'm still using that up. 

  

You need to stir this stuff with a paddle and a corded drill cause it's thick 
in the can.  I made the mistake of mixing the first gallon in the can and 
wasted about a quart figuring how much is needed for a coat.  After that, I 
poured paint into a clean bucket or painting pail and added the proper ratio 
hardener.  You can make small batches using measuring cups.  I think it's 3:1 
ratio. 

  

The stuff costs around $100 which is half of what bottom paint costs so don't 
skimp.   It stinks when it starts to kick and is one of only two paints I can't 
stay around.  I painted my bottom at the end of a work day and left for home so 
I didn't have to smell it.

The yard used awlgrip 2000, pearl gray if I recall correctly.  Stripped all 
hardware and wiring, welded shut vestigial holes, ground them flat and then 
primed and painted.  Re-wired, refitted, replaced all rod rigging.

Nah…….Didn’t Stu have a trawler? We take all types here.

Speaking of power, none of the boats you mentioned will be going to the Bahamas 
except in fairly calm weather. You will have the issue of getting there fast 
and then being trapped. I once took a girl home from Walker’s Cay due to this. 
She came across about 120 miles of open ocean with her parents in a *Wellcraft 
18 footer*!

It was flat calm on Saturday and 30+ out of the northwest on Sunday with water 
coming across the runway. We were stuck too, but the next day it was a little 
calmer and I could take off. She needed to get back to school so we took her 
back to Florida. It was probably at least a week before that Wellcraft was 
leaving for home. That is bit of an extreme example, but the typical 30-40 foot 
powerboat wouldn’t have been leaving much sooner.

 

I used to be in the boat fixing and moving business and learned a lot 
delivering various powerboats various places. Always fun to have customer’s 
pride and joy motor yacht 3 stories tall with dinner-plate rudders and the wind 
howling.

There are a few on the market and if anyone would like to spice up

I was aboard one in the yard at NOTL plant and it was lovely, an
adaptation of a commercial design they had done for the
Government.  At 37ft they are currently $50k+ which puts them outa

There are a few on the market and if anyone would like to

Stus-List Diesel 'folklore'

FWIW, a former director of maintenance at a large NC trucking company told me 
the following many years ago.
They expected their fleet of large diesel powered tractor trailer trucks to go 
for 400,000 miles when maintained properly. At that mileage, the truck was 
pulled from the fleet, the engine was rebuilt and the rebuilt engine was used 
for the next 350,000 miles, after which it was scrapped. 
Of course the marine environment and limited use of diesel engine on sailboats 
(out of slip, into slip, occasional motoring in no wind or for convenience, 
etc.) is much different than the long haul trucks. OTOH, if one assumes a long 
haul truck averages 40 miles per hour, this comes to 10,000 hours before a 
rebuild (or a new motor.)  This is likely one source of the 10,000 hour life 
number for diesel engine.

I had my bottom stripped this past summer.  The guy used what can only be
described as a hand held planer to strip the gel-coat and layers of
fiberglass.  He relaid 2 layers of fiberglass and then barrier coated it
with a MIL-spec product.  MIL-DTL-24441 Ultra High Solids (UHS) by Sherwin

I am replacing a 10 year + Sharp Aquious flat screen tv with a laptop or a large tablet. The smallest television I can buy is too big. We use a 1TB Western Digital media player to watch movies but there are plenty of options now, you can use a portable hard drive, flash drives or even SD cards. If you have internet you can likely stream your home cable too. Josh has it figured out by charging underway or in advance. You can also watch something in the cockpit if conditions permit. Laptops will let you watch a couple hours without connecting to power if your battery is strong. Check to see if you can get reception with a portable digital antenna, I can’t so a tv isn’t my first choice. Look at the power draw to help you decide. I am partway through a similar project, I removed a half dozen stereo 
components  and replaced with what is probably an RV style receiver, a Jenson  
JWM90A that has HDMI in and out and 3 zones, etc – I am planning on using a 
1080 Computer Monitor, with a Motorola Digital recorder for the TV tuner, which 
I already use at home. Hoping to find a monitor that runs on a 14 or 12V power 
supply.  Curious what 12V TY Joel found.

 

Have several other projects to get through before I finish this one up.

We have a 24 in tv powered by a 410w. Inverter. Plenty of power to run the 
amplified digital antenna too. When channels are not good we plug in the fire

weather unless you are running dehumidifiers all the time. Also, those digital

The yard used awlgrip 2000, pearl gray if I recall correctly.  Stripped all 
hardware and wiring, welded shut vestigial holes, ground them flat and then 
primed and painted.  Re-wired, refitted, replaced all rod rigging.

We used MIL-P-23337 High Solids Poly Imide Epoxy Primer in the Missile 
business.  We used it not only as a paint but as  a faying surface 
sealer and as a locking compound.  Great stuff.  We would mix up a batch 
into small specimen cups and freeze them.  Pull them out when we need to 
use them.  It would be a good barrier coat material but I would expect 
cost to be an issue.

The guy that did the job claims he's one of the only people who still

My impression from various reviews is that 12 volt TVs tend to be low quality 
devices. We watch shows onboard wit a laptop for the most part, but we have 
used a Kindle Fire on occasion. I would probably just get a decent computer 
monitor instead of a TV. Some of them run off 12 volts and the rest will work 
from an inverter. 

I don’t think I have watched over the air broadcast TV in years, all I see is 
streaming stuff one way or the other.

Agreed.  I searched.  I would have liked a bluenose.  Considered the dime
but I felt it was more important (just for the sake of it) to have a
larger, higher value Canadian coin, minted in 1989.  I even half-heartedly
looked for gold and platinum options to get the bluenose.
