Hmm more correctly we can't support it, install it, or modify it, without
a license. Also it does get built from source.

What do you need to know? 3.20 is a GPL release which is unsupported
by the authors, whereas the more stable and debugged 3.22 is
proprietary software, and as such is available in binary form only.

My guess is that you could only distribute the binary with Mandrake if
you licence it, so you have the GPL in the installation, but can offer
a mirror of the commercial release (are these fairly similar rules to
distributing StarOffice or Corel WP/Linux?)

Following a hint from Civileme, I have now successfully traced the problem to
the existence of hidden .directory files in the FAT32 partition to be
mounted. Each consists of four lines:

# KDE Config File
[KDE Desktop Entry]
BgIcon=
Name=

KFM will hang when asked to move into a directory if any one of the
subdirectories contains such a file. Once they are removed, KFM
navigates without hanging.

Since this behaviour is new with Oxygen, it points to one or more of the 21
patches made to kdebase-1.1.2 by MandrakeSoft since 6.1 producing this bug.

It is a show-stopper for the release of 7.0

Re: [Cooker] How to test DSL? (BellAtlantic ADSL with PPPoE)

2000-01-13 Thread Jeffrey Trimm

Thanks for the response.

As it turns out, after having no luck finding any PPPoE
utilities within Oxygen, I dug around and found a fantastic PPPoE driver for
linux over at:

http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe.html

The great thing about this driver is (a) it doesn't require a
kernel patch/recompile and (b) it takes about 10 minutes to read the README, run
the make, edit your PAP file, and starting using the driver to surf the
web!  The directions in the included HOWTO were clear and
concise.

Definately the easiest way to get up and running with DSL and
Linux.  Kudos to the folks over at RoaringPenguin.  Performance is
excellent- when DL'ing from fast sites, I'm getting the maximum throughput
possible through my 640kbit connection.

As an aside, Mandrake would be well served to include an easy
way (GUI off their HW control panel??) to set up PPPoE with their distro-- most
of the big Telcos are using it for DSL (for better or worse...).  It's a
good selling point.

I have PPPoE working with oxygen but I'm not with
Bell Atlantic..  Anyway, I downloaded the kernel patch and user-space
program from http://www.davin.ottawa.on.ca/pppoe.
It requires a kernel compile and a small program in addition to configuring a
recent version of pppd.  There is a good page with all the available linux
PPPoE clients here: http://www.sympaticousers.org/faq/linux_pppoe.htm

the flicker on my Inspiron 7500 (Mach64 Rage Mobility/P) It doesn't seem

I forgot to put this into my last e-mail entitled Weird Bugs.

In lothar I have the section called Other Devices and it lists these:

[Cooker] Weird bugs

2000-01-13 Thread dhopp

Hello all,

I would first like to say that the mandrake team is doing a great job. I'm no linux
expert but version 7.0 is really nice. I do have some bugs or weird behavior to
report.

I just installed the beta release today. The current installation that I have was
done with the customize install and not the expert install. I have gotten the same
symptoms with an expert install though.

First, when I login to the system as root, it won't let me shutdown. I type shutdown
-r now and I get the error message:

No authorized users are logged in.

Ctrl-alt-del gives me the same message

Second, I have a Diamond Supra Express 336 PNP ISA Voice modem which I believe should
work under linux (I have another modem but it's a winmodem, we don't need to talk
about that). Lothar doesn't find it and when I shutdown X and go to the console I get
this message:

An ISA PnP Card has been found but hasn't been indentified.

Thirdly, I have a Creative PCI 128 Sound card. Lothar detects it as a Ensoniq ES1371
but no sounds play through the card. The model number on the card is CT4750.

As I said before I am no expert at linux but I do in know my way around the system in
general so if anybody needs more info about my system (hardware, config files) let me
know what and about where to get it and I'll get it for you.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

Well...
I was happy when I found out that I was getting my hands on a distro that
had Xfree 3.3.6
This meant I would get some Rage128 support without going thru that annoying
process

I get this error when the config comes up...

An error occurred
Server Rage128 is not available (should be in
/mnt/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_Rage128)

Click OK, and you get the same thing
Either this needs to be fixed, or things need to be setup so that you can
pick an alternate location, or pick a different server...

Ideas?

Yes. You can however give it several names; separated by `|'
eg: "My funny name|lp|anotherone|foobar"

The first one is the one that will be showed by samba/g-print/etc.

I will add a little comment to the help of DrakX

change it from the_name_of_my_printer to "the_name_of_my_printer|lp"
trough printerdrake or printtool. (or simply editing the
/etc/printcap file)

Indeed, the right file name should be /etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap (systemwide)
or $HOME/.Xmodmap (personal keyboard map)

What is the error message exactly ?
Check the permissions of /tmp (it must be drwxrwxrwt)
Can you try creating a $HOME/tmp/ ?

What are you using to download with? Unfortunately, the only tool that
does the job properly is rsync -vrlt --delete --partial (--delete
deletes local files that are no longer on the server). Read man rsync.

The oxygen beta server and its mirrors are extremely dynamic and someone is
adding or replacing about 100 rpms a day , or more, sometimes.

Of course, this makes nearly futile and meaningless any attempt to do a beta
test.

Yes; 'Multi_key' is an X11 keysym; in console the similar keysysm is 'Compose'.

The XKB map seems wrong indeed. But the xmodmap one (the one used during
the install) is OK. You can load it with 'xmodmap modmap.ee'
It is on Mandrake/mdkinst/usr/share/xmodmap/ on the CDROM.

You can also copy it to /etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap and it should be loaded
automatically for each X11 session.

Yes; we ship with an xfs that has True Type spport (based on x-tt in fact;
look at your /usr/doc/XFree86-xfs-3.3.*/ directory for more details).
That is the case since long ago.

> If so, where are the fonts stored,

Just into a directory; contrary to xfstt our support of True Type fonts is
done exactly the same way as for any other kind of fonts supported by X11:
you just need a fonts.dir file, that's all.

A 'ttmkfdir' utility is provided in the freetype package to help you
create that file.

> And do they work on printing?

'yudit', a unicode text editor can use True Type fonts for printing (only
one at a time).
Whan printing with ghostscript the main problem is in fact to have the
Postscript file link to / include the proper fonts. That is not the case; it
seems that the programs generating postscript think that only two or three
postscript fonts exist in the world; it is really very complicated to
print choosing the fonts.

I think the solution to that will come from the desktop suites like Gnome
and KDE, by providing a centralized and standardized way for applications
to generate printable pages.

Currently you can use them to print with several kind of applications, but
not in any unified way, and that involves generally some manual intervention.

In 7.0, compat-glibc-5.3-2.0.7.5mdk and compat-libs-5.3-4mdk are

Oxygen is a beta. It is not yet shipping, so broken software isn't being
shipped. Things get fixed one at a time (actually things might get fixed 4 or 5
or whatever at a time depending on the number of developers) and not all at
once. You can complain if it's not fixed, after Mandrake 7 does ship.

I have the same video/motherboard combo. I am currently running, Cooker
with audio/video/networking all functioning fine. I had a very difficult
time getting the networking module working. I popped a new (Intel Pro) into
one of the pci slots and everything works just great. I highly reccomend
that you download and use the Suse X-server for SIS. It makes X faster,
more stable, and more responsive than the standard SVGA X-server. Also, OSS
provides sound drivers (if you feel you need them) for the Cmedia 1838 chip.
The Davicom network card was my stickiest point. BTW, this board runs
BEOS really well in case in one wanted to know. Hope this helps thanks

I am becoming very disappointed with Mandrake. The distribution is good,
but the Quality Control seems horrible. How many times do we have to say

Pristine, as installed:

DOS_hda2 FAT32
DOS_hda5 FAT32
DOS_hda6 FAT32
DOS_hda7 FAT32
DOS_hda8 (is actually an HPFS partition)
DOS_hdd5 FAT16

hd

Odd, but hda9 through 13 are also HPFS but are not in /etc/fstab.
Bug Report: DrakX-supplied /etc/fstab specifies hda8 as vfat, which is
incorrect.

Idea!

I deleted the /dev/hda8 line from /etc/fstab and rebooted - KFM still hangs
on /mnt. /dev/hda8 is not in the mount list.

Previous tests:

I can manually mount things in other places and KFM navigates
them just fine.

Removing all the supermounts proved that the problem is not
supermount-related.

After marking all the hda lines in /etc/fstab as noauto and rebooting, KFM
shows the /mnt directory correctly.

Using the desktop icons to mount:

hda2 OK
hda5 OK
hda6 hangs KFM!

Using Partition Magic 5.0 to examine this partition:

No errors found.

Reboot Oxygen and mount via icons but in a different order:

hda6 - mounts, clicking on mount point produces blank window and KFM is
now hung.

Boot up Win 98 SE:

The Thai keyboard maps have been integrated; as well as some of the
translated X11 ressources (in the locales-th file; note however that
only a few of the text strings are translatable like that; and those
programs are no longer really used...).

The fonts are indeed a big missing thing; I have several fonts myself, but
I'm not sure about their licence if I can redistribute them into the
Mandrake Linux.

For the Thai xterm, the problem is I have been unable so far to find the
source code of it.

The XFree86 has japenese keyboard layout maping.
I change Keyboard Section of the "XF86Config" file then I can use japanese
keyboad layout on X-WindowSystem.

- the setting of Keyboard Section of the "XF86Config"
(where I changed only!!)

  XkbModel"jp106"
  XkbLayout "jp"

But on the console mode, I can't use Japanese keyboard layout.
I dont have japanese keymap for console, exactly I don't know
that which file is keymap of the Japense keyboards.
However, we can use Japenese keymap (jp106) on Mandrake Linux 6.1.
So, I think there are keymap of the Japense keyboards in Mandrake

If I find that file, then I will send that file or file infomation to you.

I' ve just downloaded the release 7.0 beta and so I've tried to install it.
But

This is my hardware configuration:

Intel pentium II 350 MHz
96 MB Ram
Sis 6326 (video-board)
Philips 107 MB (monitor)
Adaptec AVA-2904 SCSI adapter with 2 CD connected

The installation begins in text mode (like release 6.1) but with very ugly
colors...(it's not important for me).
When the prompt asks me where are locared the installation files and I
select CDROM driver (are there), the installation program is not able to
mount CDROM file system and the program is stalled until I press crtl+c.
After I press ctrl+c the installtion program displays Kernel Panic Can't
mount file system of ... device.

I hope that my report is helpfully to improve the Mandrake 7.0 distribution.

Best Regards,

Hello Pablo...

seemingly WWW.NETENGTEL.COM has mandrake 6.1 with TLE Thai (they
sell it.)
I havent seen it as the last thing I need is Thai on MY computer at
present.
However acc to a local engineer who uses it, its good.

Presumably it should be possible to get one or as I see from their
webside download the Thai addon.
Now obviously if it had proper Thai support build in from scratch

Since we have a feature freeze for 7.0, can't we make a "special area"

we temporarily put the stuff that can't make it into 7.0 because of the
freeze,

these files
belong in such an area...

Just my thoughts...

[Cooker] Re: netscape 4.70-6mdk-CookerMail

2000-01-13 Thread WH Bouterse

Okay I'll quit struggling and ask:

Cannot install the latest netscape 4.70-6mdkrpm
on L-M7.0b-5? To my knowledge All lib-rpms
are installed from 7.0b.

I read about this problem somewhere else ?
It's the ol-compat-glib 5.3-2.0.7.4 needed and not found.
Have not had this kind of problem with netscape installs
since the REALLY buggy 4.5x versions.

I have been upgrading my test L-M6.1 machine

The latest rpms have given me more trouble than any others
for some reason? It is still working but continue to get
many of the older errors I was getting from
a couple of weeks ago.

I continue to have VERY ERRATIC behavior with Cooker-Mail
and Cooker Announcements. Some Days I get mail, others it stops
completely or stalls to a dribble, half of my questions or error
reports disappear into the VOID. I have had to resubscribe
several times in the last several weeks?
What is Happening? Am I going Nuts or is something really
Wrong with the paticular mail-list system being used?
I have not changed my mail-headers, etc.

This am Ak Time the Archive List is down too?
Hopefully a temporary glitch?

Please test this Linux-Mandrake7.0 a little more before
formally releasing it to the PUBLIC.

Hi,

With the current version of oxygen (as of *now* on ftp.sunet.se) ,
Xconfigurator and SuperProbe fails to identify the onboard graphics chip
on a intel CA810AEL motherboard.

On the latest release note of xfree there is some kind of note that the
i810 is supported by not enabled by default, I am unable to find any
more usefull documentation regarding the i810.

[Cooker] et keymap again

2000-01-13 Thread Riho Kurg

Tere:

There are still problems with console keymaps for Estonian keyboard.
In some mysterious reasons tries Mandrake use file
/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/ee-latin9.kmap.gz instead of
/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/et.kmap.gz (which corresponds to ET
keyboard layout standard.
Below is excerpt from startup log:
-
Loading /usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/ee-latin9.kmap.gz
unknown keysym `Multi_key'
/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/ee-latin9.kmap.gz:92: parse error
syntax error in map file
key bindings not changed
-
Quick fix was removing Multi_key definition.
Any other ideas?

[Cooker] How to test DSL? (BellAtlantic ADSL with PPPoE)

2000-01-13 Thread Jeffrey Trimm

I just joined the cooker list a few days ago for purposes of
testing new DSL functionality with the latest Mandrake Beta ISO.  I DL'ed,
burned, and installed the latest Mandrake ISO.
However, I haven't found any information about what I should be testing (ie.
what executables/modules are DSL-related?).  What
should I be looking at?

Also, are there any BellAtlantic ADSL subscribers out there
who have got PPPoE working properly with Mandrake who can point me in the right
direction?  I have an ethernet card working with an external ADSL
modem.

Thanks for any help!

[Cooker] Bugs report

2000-01-13 Thread Verdeyen Boris

   Some bugs in the mandrake-beta 7.0 :

1) I used Lothar sound-config to configure my Maxi Sound 64( module
CS4232). It was configured correctly except for the midi !
In conf.modules was well added an entry "options opl3 io 0x388"
.but no "alias midi opl3". I added it.

2) I installed Mandrake without problems (maybe it should easier to step
back in the Installation options ...) but no Graphic Rpm manager was
installed ... I installed RpmDrake .DrakConf was not installed ... I
installed it. I don't remember well the options i had chosen during the
installation ... sorry.

3) Printer problems : I choose a printer during the installation and
decide to give it another name than "lp" ... Later when I try to use it
It doesn't work ! Lpr is by default trying to find a printer called "lp"
... I read the man page about lpr and try to change the Environnement
variable $PRINTER they are talking about ... no way ... I had to
change the name of my printer to "lp" or use the command lpr -P
the_name_of_my_printer ... Maybe a cleaner solution would be a good
idea.

4) I suppose you had the good idea to change the ide cdwriters to
scsi-emulations to allow writing with xcdroast and so on . Very well .
It's told to the kernel to use ide-scsi for hdd. -> it becomes sr0. But
the /dev/cdrom2 still links hdd. I had to change for sr0 and to make a
modprobe ide-scsi at boot.

5) A little error ... With KDE an icon on the root desktop links
/home/baudens

6) I wanted to change a bit my keyboard configuration .So i changed the
/etc/X11/xinit/Xmodmap. But it changed nothing ... In fact it was
because in the /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession it was written
"sysmodmap=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap" instead of
"sysmodmap=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/Xmodmap".

7) Some links missing in the menus : xcdroast,
gnome-toaster,lothar-soundconfig,etherconfig ...

8) The package gtk-engines maybe should be installed by default with
Gnome.

9) Wine-991212-1 package is given without a good wine.conf.

10) the gsu.0.9-2 package is corrupted : it's only 1kb.

11) xmms-skins-0.9.5.1-7 installs well the skins but only root can use
them because the skins are zipped and noraml users can't unzip them them
in /tmp. Don't know why ?

12) problem with gcc : when I run ./configure of a program I want to
compile, it tells me "gcc can't create executables problen with
installation or configuration." . Maybe I must install other packages
with gcc-2.95.2-3 and bin-utils-2.95.0-16.

Well I hope it will help you But your distribution is already
great with these little bugs ...

I think you would better work with the maintainer of licq, John Buswell,
since licq is in the main distro.

Yes

I have used it on one of those PCChips PC100 boards and also the Shuttle 598 which is
a much better made board with the same
chipset. The XFree 3.3.5 on those distributions (which are really the same one
marketed differently) handles the 530 and
620 chipsets and the 6326 very well indeed. On a few boards it is necessary to turn
off video acceleration, but those are
mainly poor implementations of the 6326.
