[Cooker] ghostscript drivers/cups ppds
I've been using Mandrake for a while, but I'm relatively new to Cooker, so bear with me if this sounds a bit newbiish (as it is :). I was wondering how to go about getting a certain manufacturer's ghostscript driver included in the mandrake gs package (specifically Samsung's driver for the ml-4500 and ml-6040, which is GPL'd, and is available as a src-rpm here: http://www.samsungelectronics.com/support/downloads/printer/dn_5407_en.html -- its called gdi, yes I know that is very misleading, but that's the name :). I have managed to kind of kludge it into the most recent gs build in 7.2 (just added gdevgdi.c into the makefile's list of drivers), but I don't feel I have to time to do it "properly" until the school semester ends and I have a break. And I have no idea how to generate a cups ppd file for it, so I'm stuck with lpr for now. I think a couple other people I talked to at www.linuxprinting.org had this printer also. Not that I'm in any hurry, just wanted to try out cups and kill lpd. :) - Jeff

[Cooker] Suggestion for Cooker
This is so obvious that I'm sure that there is a good reason why this isn't part of the distribution already, but As experienced Mandrake users know (and also according to the official Mandrake User's Guide: file:/usr/share/doc/mandrake/en/mdkrefguide/install-free-installation.html) users should install new software in /usr/local. Since /user/local/bin is included by default in a user's $PATH why isn't /usr/local/lib included in a user's $LD_LIBRARY_PATH by default as well? -Chris

Has > the problem you're having changed in any way, or is it exactly the same > as it was previously? > > -Mark Gordon I'm still having the same problem too. The problem is that every time you reboot the mandrake_desk package recreates all the window manager / desktop sessions from some other files. This is done by the /usr/sbin/fndSession program which is started in /etc/rc.d/init.d/mandrake_everytime script. The fndSession program looks in /etc/X11/wmsession.d for scripts named XXWM where XX is 01 to whatever, and WM is the session name. Looking in that directory I see : [drfickle@potato wmsession.d]$ ls -l total 32 -rw-r--r--1 root root 117 Oct 26 10:12 01KDE -rw-r--r--1 root root 136 Oct 30 22:04 02GNOME -rw-r--r--1 root root 224 Oct 2 09:53 03WindowMaker -rw-r--r--1 root root 173 Oct 25 03:03 04enlightenment -rw-r--r--1 root root 179 Oct 3 13:42 05blackbox -rw-r--r--1 root root 134 Oct 3 02:09 06afterstep -rw-r--r--1 root root 143 Oct 3 12:03 07IceWM -rw-r--r--1 root root 139 Oct 30 22:06 08failsafe So the fndSession does something with these files, then creates the real sessions in /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions In that directory I have : [drfickle@potato Sessions]$ ll total 40 -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 43 Nov 20 21:20 AfterStep* -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 42 Nov 20 21:20 BlackBox* lrwxrwxrwx1 root root5 Nov 20 21:20 Default -> GNOME* -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 47 Nov 20 21:20 Enlightenment* -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 39 Nov 20 21:20 GNOME* -rw-r--r--1 root root 325 Nov 17 16:24 Gnome -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 39 Nov 20 21:20 IceWM* -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 37 Nov 20 21:20 KDE* -rw-r--r--1 root root 41 Oct 29 01:48 Sawfish -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 45 Nov 20 21:20 WindowMaker* -rw-r--r--1 root root 781 Nov 17 16:24 Xsession lrwxrwxrwx1 root root7 Oct 29 01:00 default -> Default* Looking at the GNOME file I see: #!/bin/sh exec /etc/X11/Xsession GNOME Looking at the Gnome file I see: #!/bin/bash -login for errfile in "$HOME/.gnomerc-errors" "${TMPDIR-/tmp}/gnomerc-$USER" "/tmp/gnomdo if ( cp /dev/null "$errfile" 2> /dev/null ) then chmod 600 "$errfile" exec > "$errfile" 2>&1 break fi done if [ -x "$HOME/.gnomerc" ]; then exec "$HOME/.gnomerc" else exec "/etc/X11/gdm/gnomerc" fi and the gnomerc file mentioned in there contains: /usr/bin/gnome-session My thoughts: the fndSession app is creating the GNOME file which doesn't appear to like Helix's GDM package. The Helix GDM package is creating the Gnome file. Also notice that the Gnome file is not set executable. I think this has something to do with why it's not showing up in the GDM screen. Anyways, I hope that between the Mandrake people and the Helix people someone can figure out the difference in packaging and squash this bug. I'm getting tired of having to select GNOME from the GDM session screen every time I login ;0) -- Steve Fox http://k-lug.com

[Cooker] Upgrading from 7.1
I saw several instances of "upgrading from 7.2" on this list, but I'm currently using 7.1, and want to upgrade some of the packages to cooker. [Cooker] Uploaded ddd-3.2.91-1mdk.src.rpm
Hi! This is my first contribution to cooker. I just uploaded ddd-3.2.91-1mdk.src.rpm to the /incoming directory. If I messed anything up, please lemme know. I already submitted the .spec diff to the DDD team, for inclusion in the standard distribution. The main changes between ddd 3.2.1 and 3.2.91 is the support for "data themes", and JDK 1.2, besides the usual bug fixes. Thanks. -- []'s|.~. These settings in /etc/X11/fs/config will screw up fonts in Kde2 and you will not be able to choose any font. After you copied your windows fonts to /usr/lib/X11/fonts/WinFonts folder and run ttmkfdir -o fonts.dir your /etc/X11/fs/config file should look like this: catalogue = /usr/lib/X11/fonts/WinFonts, /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled, /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont, /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mdk #/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled, #/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled, #/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/pcf_drakfont:unscaled, #/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1, #/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo, #/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1, #/usr/share/fonts/ttf/western, #/usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/misc:unscaled, #/usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/100dpi:unscaled, #/usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/75dpi:unscaled, #/usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/Type1 # in 12 points, decipoints default-point-size = 120 # 100 x 100 and 75 x 75 default-resolutions = 100,100,75,75 and you will get beautiful fonts in all KDE2 applications (In Konqueror fonts looks exactly like in MS Explorer). [Cooker] Fresh LM 7.2 install [Ugly fonts], and suggested fixes
Thanks to one kind man here, I received LM 7.2 and effected setup on separate partition. I decided to setup it with national support (ru), and was able finally to test what some people were speaking about - ugly fonts (KDE2) of almost unbelievable size and non-usable KDE2. I uploaded several small screen snapshots: http://kde2.newmail.ru/BIGFONT1.PNG http://kde2.newmail.ru/BIGFONT2.PNG http://kde2.newmail.ru/BIGFONT3.PNG And, K menu (on left side) was not opening. When I press on it, it was asking for password, and after entering password returning back to desktop, without menu opened. It was really some kind of surprise for me, as I had no problems with KDE2 from the middle of September. (binary RPMs from Cooker, and until now was running KDE 2.0 release compiled from tar.gz sources) Hopefuly, it's possible to do Right Mouse Button click on panel, and add Konsole to it (for some reason, there were console/konqueeor /kwrite buttons on panel) Hopefuly, it's possible to do Right Mouse Button click on panel, and add Konsole to it (for some reason, there were console/konqueeor /kwrite buttons on panel). By the way, it was even not possible to logout through this K menu ..., only with RMB on desktop... Here is the problem with ugly fonts( K menu bug is related to it) KDE2 was starting using LEDfixed (ledfixed) font for ALL kind of settings - menu, dialogs, etc. When I tried to change font settings in KControl, it was returning back to initial (ledfixed) On top of it, Konqueror was using some incredible font substitution and not displaying Russian at all. Besides, Login Manager was showing only instead of text, in all fields. Hopefuly I was using KDE2 and KDM for a while, so I pressed on lowest option on right-side box, and got console in front of me. So, I applied standard procedure which I described to several people having problems with fonts: 1) copy c:/windows/fonts *.ttf to /usr/lib/X11/fonts/WinFonts 2) cd /usr/lib/X11/fonts/WinFonts run ttmkfdir -o fonts.dir 3) comment out all unnecessary entries which cause fonts to looks ugly, or select wrong encoding; 3b) add WinFonts entry to XFS server catalog # where to look for fonts # Some of these are commented out, i.e. the TrueType and Type1 # catalogue = /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/WinFonts, /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled # /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled, # /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled, # /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1, # /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo, # /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mdk, # /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1, # /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/75dpi:unscaled, # /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/75dpi:unscaled, # /usr/share/fonts/ttf/western VERY ANNOYING XFree86 bug: you can't start it withou "fixed" ont So I had to leave /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled section, which just consumes memory on my X and space on HDD. 4) reboot, start KDE2 select all fonts to Arial/Courirer/Times New Roman, instead of ledfixed or any other X-based font. 5) System -> Login Manager change "fixed" iso-8859-1 font to Arial/KOI8-R 5b) delete in Welcome to localhost! message and replace it with English, as Russian keyboard is not working. So, finaly it was fixed, but took several hours to tune it. /the reason for such strange behavior of KDE2 is missing *right* fonts for Cyrillic, with necessary encodings; second - wrong font names in default KDE2 setup; third - probably, so bug in KDE2 algorithm for font selection, but you always can overwrite it with axact font name/ And, I already had experience of fixing this. I afraid that newcomers to Linux or people who don't know what the FontServer and TrueType encoding is, will be mixed in such situation. What's really bad that people can start thinking about KDE2 as _bad program_, because of this. Such attitude is really bad, and problem should be fixed, IMHO. May I suggest that these issues will be fixed for LM 7.2? You will probably not get negative input about such situation in US, but in Europe (and Asia) people can experience such problems. 6) finally, about keyboard. I had a hope that with LM 7.2 which is much newer then LM 7.0 I had, this problem is not fixed. Unfortunately, not. Russian Keyboard is not working. (well, I even installed German/DE option to see if it is working at all. And, I was able to get German symbols, but no Russian) Are there any chance to get it finaly working? I can read mails in KMail in Russian, use Konqueorr for browsing, but can't write in Russian for Linux, so had to reboot every time to get Win98. Copy/paste with Russian text in KWord/Koffice dosn't work, I get same ? instead of letters, but it is Koffice bug, I reported it. But missing national keyboard is a big disappointment; I can leave without DRI on my Rage Mobile, but this keyboard switching is much more easier, isn't it? -- Vadim Plessky http://kde2.newmail.ru (English) http://kd

Either way, this, of course, begs the question: What *IS* the 'real' Mandrake 7.2? The box states 'Linux-Mandrake 7.2 complete'. It's published by MacMillan (MandrakeSoft's US distributor). You can't get any more 'real' than that, at least by appearance. Seeing as how Mandrake whines on about how they have to make money to pay for their salaries (a legitimate concern) I figured that $32 isn't going to break me, and that at least I'd be contributing a bit. I made sure that this was not the WalMart version, and figured I would therefore be 'safe'. After all, if I were to download Mandrake, I would spend no money, but neither would Mandrake earn any. Buy the 'real' Mandrake? Would the real Mandrake please stand up? I'm certainly not going to risk and additional $79.95 on another 'experiment, only to find out that this is an incomplete release version as well. Besides, I stopped purchasing RedHat when they jacked their prices up in the $79.95 range, so if I'm going to spend that kind of money, I'm going to buy RedHat - at least their distro works. So, what to do? > Yes, the promotion is misleading (or worse) to an experienced > Mandrake User Yeah, seeing as how I'm not the only one having versioning problems, I'd say that's about accurate. Seeing as how Mandrake's attitude appears to be that most users who have this problem are either stpid or lazy, I don't see that changing soon. > (probably none of which are to be found in Macmillan, > WalMart, Mandrake(?) marketing). Apparently, the one constant in the Universe are marketing people - just like in the US, if you prove incompetent at much else, you go to marketing. Harry

[Cooker] Grub doesn't handle reiserfs with another ext2fs
Hi, I used grub from 7.2 (grub-0.5.95-7mdk). I have 3 reiserfs part on hda and another ext2fs on hdc. I want to use grub for booting mandrake on hda and debian on hdc. But as grub use reiserfs_stage1.5, it can't handle ext2fs. I tried to install reiserfs-grub on hda and ext2fs-grub on hdc and chainloader from hda to hdc during the boot, but it doesn't work. maybe, I need to try 0.5.96 ? -- Thomas Poindessous EpX asso GNU/Linux de l'Epita [EMAIL PROTECTED] && http://www.epita.fr/~epx

Re: [Cooker] **Why is joe missing from 7.2!!!???**
This thread has become mired in vitriole that is really being mis-directed. > Well, as we are all discovering right now, that is because there are > different 'versions' of 7.2, all of them clearly marked as '7.2', with no > real way of differentiating them, and what you get when you get them. You're absolutely correct and this is the real problem. I'm not even sure that the Mandrake folks understand the extent of damage they are doing with this marketing policy. I and others got caught up in a thread similar to this over C++ libraries in 7.1. From what I can see the problem is that MacMillan doesn't just take the two iso disks and burn them to commercial ones, they have decided to eliminate the extended disk in their Complete packages. The result is that some stuff has to move from the extended disk to the main one and some stuff has to be eliminated from the main disk to accommodate this. The result is, as you describe - all versions of 7.2 are not created equal, not in terms of third party extras but rather with respect to the base disks that most people in these conferences use as a reference. Matters become more confusing when they change the commercial packages without making any change to box and they have admitted that they're doing just that. I bought two copies of 7.1 and they were significantly different from one another. The 7.2 scheme is clear. What's in the stores now will change after xmas. What people here should understand is that this affects what advice people CAN give here and elsewhere as people are coming to these conferences with different packages, though they're calling them all the same thing. What Mandrake needs to understand is that these marketing policies are driving people to download the isos and AVOID buying their commercial products. This, I suspect, is hardly what Mandrake is thinking about when they decide to leave the ext disk out of their Complete package. > Decidedly, bsed on this experience, this is the last time I will have spent > any sort of money on a MacMillan, and particularly a Mandrake product - > after all, the free downloads *ARE* more complete, so why am I spending my > money on something that only provides partially what's needed. > > Too bad, truly, since I really wanted to send some money Mandrake's way. I said pretty much the same thing in another forum. I've installed several copies for people and have always told them to buy the commercial package, mostly because I felt that Mandrake needed the support. But once I saw that these packages were changing and that I couldn't depend on the files I wanted being there, I've since just used my own disks to install for these people and have warned them of the problem. MacMillan can talk all they want about "Complete isn't complete" but to not include the basic two disk distribution in anything they shrinkwrap with that version number doesn't make any sense. So Harry, you may have been a bit snippy with your original post. You've also received a whole bunch of 'snip' in return. But the truth of the matter is that Mandrake is shooting themselves in the foot with this stuff and it's the messengers that are being shot by its defenders. Cheers --- Larry

I have an AMD Athlon 1.1G, Asus A7V Motherboard, Tekram U160 SCSI controller, IBM U160 SCSI drive with Elsa Gladiac Geforce2GTS and MDK7.2. It all works fine far less problems than when trying to get same combination running on W2K (which required me to download loads of driver updates). BIOS's on AMD motherboards / Geforce graphics cards seem to be in a state of flux - download the updates before installing MDK. Oh... and AMD seem to be getting such good yields, that a 700/800 MHz Thunderbird can easily be pushed to 1G / 1.1G using standard voltage settings and heatsink for a 1G processor. Just get a graphite pen and short out the L2 links on the top of the processor before you plug it in (same goes for Durons, 700MHz durons run well at 1G). [Cooker] POP3 server is BUGGY in 7.2!!!
Hi! I had problems with POP clients that tried to retrieve mail. It only worked if client was configured "Delete messages on server" if it was setup with "Leave messages on server" it just hanged on "Retrieving messages list...". This was tried with MANY email clients (Netscape, Outlook, Calypso). Machines checking mail have REAL IP's so it is not an DNS problem or something like that. When I grabbed older ipop3d everything worked again! I used version v7.59! Any ideas? Bye, Alen

KDE-2 is nothing again a new gcc or kernel or glibc, but i guess with the upload of python-2 there is only the kernel-2.4.0 to finish the upgrade and the switch to libstdc++-v3 (aka: we break everything again and again). -- MandrakeSoft Inc http://www.chmouel.org --Chmouel

[Cooker] Cooker stability question for FTP site maintainer
About 26 hours from now, I'm planning to plug into a fat pipe and absorb a copy of Cooker from the nearest (AARNet, Queensland) mirror. Are you (Mandrake) guys planning on uploading anything in the next day or so which is likely to break (e.g. highly experimental KDE-2 updates)? -- "USENET is not a right.
