[Cooker] DHCP questions..
As I usually do with betas, I'v now installed, and re-installed beta3 several times. The installer finds my NIC, and detects as being on a LAN (I'm connectec via cable modem to my ISP). Thus, I can choose either cable *or* LAN connection. However, which should I choose? (or which would be the preferable selection? It would be helpful to the newbie if some explanatory text were added / associated with the selection window. I'm sure that I'm not the only newbie who might choose "expert install" over recommended. The two main attractions of linux: open source, and freedom of choice. Mandrake, AFAIK, uses KDE as the default desktop whereas Red Hat defaults to Gnome. Under Wolverine (RH 7.1 beta) I had no connection problems with either KDE or Gnome. However, with Mandrake's beta 3, I have a problem under Nautlius. with dynamic addresses, which I cannot seem to resolve satisfactorily. Wether I select DHCP. DHCP-client, LAN, cable connection, the probelm still persists with Nautilus. ... any workaround or fix for this? Elton Woo -- Have you been counted? Is it too late to post any "wish-list" items here? I don't have all the updates installed, just whatever is in beta 3. Hopefully ny mext try on downloading the updates will work. My previous efforts allowed me to select a mirror site, but the Software Manager balked saying that the pacakge was alerady installed, even thouugh I had selected an _newer_ version than what was alerady on the system. WRT the Software Manager, I did some *UN-installation*, nd I notice that if I select to uninmstall a package, and let the SM select to remove dependencies, SM would immediately close down afterwards. OTH, if I selected the pacakge, _and_ the dependencies *myself* (rather than let SM do it), the Software manager wouldn't crash. Does this make sense? [Cooker] where to get the Netscape 4.77 mandrake rpm?

[Cooker] installing updates via ftp fails? (beta 3)
Using the Mandrake update, I cannot get newer versions of packages installed. The software manager configures my (IDE) CDRom as CD1, and my (SCSI, ID 0) CDRW as CD2. NOTE to Mandrake developers: in fstab: /dev/cdrom and /dev/cdrom2 (why no /dev/cdrom1?). Problem: logging on to a mirror, "Cooker" or "Updates"I get the installable list, and select a newer package version. Installer fails, reporting that the package is "already installed" on the system. Doesn't the software manager recognise the newer versions? Elton Woo ;-) -- Have you been counted? See http://counter.li.org [EMAIL PROTECTED] - ICQ#9984432 - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA. [Cooker] using DHCP with Gnome...
.. as much as I like KDE, I would also like to use Gnome . As I haven't used Gnome much in the past, I'm unsure if this is a Gnome or Mandrake problem: I'm on a cable connection, so naturally I have a dynamic IP address. After I log into the Gnome desktop, it complains that it can't find DHCP (since it's not in the hosts file). Is there some way to "fix" this? [Cooker] USB detection...(beta 3)
With a beta, I do usually do several clean installs. I thought with the new 2.4.* kernel that usb devices would be automatically detected and configured. However, my Epson Perfection 610 usb isn't. I still had to manually edit /etc/rc.d/rd.local -- modprobe scanner vendor=0x04b8 product=0x0103 then comment out everything in /etc/sane.d/epson.conf, and append -- usb /dev/usb/scanner0. (Thanks to advice from the SANE list). What *USB* devices are actually detected on installation? AFAIK, at least mice and keyboards should be no problem, but Traktopel still sees my Logitech Optical usb (wheel) mouse as "usb generic" and *not* "usb wheel". During "expert" install, when told to test the mouse, the pointer *invariably* loses itself in the _top right corner_ of the screen... respectfully, Elton Woo ;-) -- Have you been counted? [Cooker] are these bugs? .. some comments on Traktopel (beta3)
I recently installed / re-installed the Traktopel (beta 3) for the fifth or sixth time. It appears that some of the apps that I selected (using "expert") were not installed. This last time, I selected Reiserfs instead of ext2fs as the file-system. Mind you, though I usually install with the "expert" option, I consider myself a linux "newbie", so I don't claim to know everything, something, or even *that* much... My impressions, therfore are based on a limited knowledge of linux. It appears that Reiser is more stable than ex2fs, since I don't have the crashes that I had with KDE. Eazel seems the most likely candidate to "steal" my alleigance to KDE! G 1) Gnome refuses to save the sound settings (i.e. I get no system sounds). In control Center -- Multimedia -- Sound, I enable both options (click OK), but anytime after, when I re-open the control center, these settings are disabled. Note, though, that the Sawfish settings for sound support are enabled, and these settings are *kept* as saved. (I can turn the volume up as loud as I can, get music files to play in Eazel, but NO system sounds! ... WHY??) 2) In KDE, Control Center-- LookNFeel -- Style --- Use Anti-Aliasing for fonts and icons RESULT: windows and dialog fonts change to: Bookman !! *yukk*!!! -P 3) The system does NOT detect my Epson Perfection 610 USB scanner. I *still* have to manually edit the /sane.d/epson.conf and /etc/rc.d/rd.local files. My Logitech Optical Wheel mouse is recognised as "Generic usb". instead of "Generic WHEEL usb". 4) I can't get Netscape (4.76) to play mp3 (audio x-mpegurl) files even though gabber 3.2 is installed. Following the links from http://help.mp3.com/help/, I changed to xmms as the helper application, still no success. Could these be bugs in Traktopel? ... or simply my own inexperience, or my hardware "misbehaving"? System: AMD k6-2/500, on an AOpen 59 Pro motherboard, 128 MB RAM, Nvidia (32 Mb) video card... Re: [Cooker] kcontrol blank
Con Kolivas wrote: Is kcontrol meant to still be blank? There are no settings to change. It's been blank for a while now. I take it that you are referring to the KDE Control Center, if so, the answer is "no". On one of my first installs of Traktopel, though I was able to set options by logging into my root account, when I invoked the program from in my user account, all the tabs / pages in the Control Center were blank. IMHO, this might be a bug in cooker. Perhaps I should report it? Has anyone else here found this? cheers, Elton Woo ;-) -- Have you been counted? Re: [Cooker] Automounter screws things up !
OS wrote: Hello, The automounter (either am-utils-6.0.5-4mdk or autofs-4.0.0-0.8mdk) messes things up badly. Trying to mount the CD or the floppy the mount process just hangs, as does mkinitrd ! Owen I was never overly fond of "automount" with previous versions of Mandrake, since my floppy device is actually /dev/hdc (an internal LS-120 superdisk drive). Beta3 linstalls the drive as /mnt/floppy, and it can be accessed (after installation). 1) The installer failed to create a bootable disk when I placed a standard 1.44 Mb floppy in the drive, with a brief message about i/o errors, before resetting the system. 2) From the KDE desktop (my user account) it would not show the drive's contents, even when I tried a different superdisk. Oddly enough, after I shutdown and reboot the system, I was able to access the drive. Wierd! Elton Woo ;-) -- Have you been counted?
