The Clinton accuser told Judicial Watch Radio that after Levin's background as a one-time topless club owner was revealed in the press last year, he was told point-blank about Levin's role providing Clinton with women. He was introduced at one point to me as 'the lap dancer provider to the president,' Paul said. The Hollywood producer said that while Levin never personally told him he was supplying the Clinton White House with strippers, Democratic insiders seemed to know what was going on. There were a lot of people who were in the Democratic fund-raising community that were unhappy [Levin] was taking a leading role generating funds for the [Clinton presidential] library and for Al Gore's campaign. Peter Paul filed suit in California state court last month alleging that the Clintons reneged on promises they made in exchange for his financial help, noting that the former first couple never reported the bulk of his donations to the Federal Election Commission as required by law. He is being represented by Judicial Watch. Up until 1993, Levin owned Thee Doll House, the Chicago topless bar that helped popularize the lap-dance craze, which became a mainstay of the club's revenue. Levin is now an executive at a company called Tru-Link and also chairman of J.H.L. Enterprises. Last year, Levin was invited to spend the night at the White House twice - in June and on New Year's Eve - where he met personally with the then-president at least twice in the White House's private residence. LAGRANGE, KY - The underground Earth Liberation Front (E.L.F.) has
officially claimed responsibility for sabotaging vehicles at the Dynegy
power plant in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 21, 2001.
A communique sent by the E.L.F. stated, Fifteen vehicles designed to rape
the earth had their tires slashed and flattened. Along with various
spray-painted ELF slogans and a dozen broken windows.
The Earth Liberation Front is an international anonymous organization that
uses direct action in the form of economic sabotage to stop the destruction
of the natural environment and exploitation of life. Since 1997 in North
America alone, the E.L.F. have caused over $40 million in damages to
entities profiting from the destruction of life.
The communique continued, We wanted to send a clear message to Dynegy that
the people will not sit around idly while our earth and health is put into
jeopardy for the sake of a few wallets in Houston.
Dynegy like many polluters of the natural world have joined the trend of
attempting to appear green and environmentally concerned. While it is true
that Dynegy's natural gas-powered plants may be cleaner than coal burning
plants, they still release nitrous oxide, one of the main ingredients in
ground level ozone and smog. Dynegy also states they intend to follow all
laws in relation to the release of emissions. Yet just last year in the
State of Texas, Dynegy faced penalties for violating Texas air quality
standards in four counties. Chevron is one of Dynegy's main investors.
It was clear that the citizens of the community did not want this in their
backyard, and that they were spoon-fed lies by corrupt politicians, the
communique stated.
The E.L.F communique finished by stating, The power is in our hands to
take direct action against the power plant and other forms of corporate
imperialism. It is the last means to take, for all other options (legal and
peaceful) have been exhausted.

The CIA experimented on people for decades By Khier Starchyld The ugly possibility of personal and mass mind control has been the topic of films and books for many decades. We think of 1984, Brave New World, The Manchurian Candidate, and Logan's Run, for example, but it's one of those It-can't-happen-here subjects that most of us dismiss as not possible for our real lives. However, these films discuss topics that according to many researchers refer to current realities, namely government-military-industrial control and manipulation of the masses with both physical and psychological methods. The coercive techniques have reached such proportions now that commentators claim that technological bullies can manipulate other human beings from remote distances of a block away to thousands of miles, and even from satellites. The Nazis blazed trails in mind control. The specifics of remote radio-type controlling of the brain came in 1934 with E.L. Chaffee's paper, A Method for the Remote Control of Electrical Stimulation of the Nervous System. Several researchers followed during the next twenty years, leading to the momentous demonstration by José Delgado who stopped a charging bull with a control box ... and an implant. In the early days of World War II, George Estabrooks, of Colgate University, wrote to the Department of War, describing the possible uses of hypnosis in warfare. The Army liked the idea and Estabrooks became some sort of asset to the burgeoning mind-control community. The true history of Estabrooks' wartime collaboration with the CID, FBI and other agencies may never be told: After the war, he burned his diary pages covering the years 1940-45, and thereafter avoided discussing hiscontinuing government work with anyone, even close members of the family, according to an Interview with daughter Doreen Estabrooks. Occasionally, he strongly intimated that his work involved the creation of hypno-programmed couriers and hypnotically-induced split personalities. He was a seminal theorist on the use of hypnosis in warfare, and a veteran of Project MK-ULTRA which was the vicious CIA project that used American citizens as guinea pigs for various experiments. He is reported to have amused himself during a party by covertly hypnotizing two friends, who were led to believe that the Prime Minister of England had just arrived; Estabrooks' victims spent an hour conversing with, and even serving drinks to, the esteemed visitor [in Martin Cannon's 'The Controllers,' p. 4]. Such experimenters like Estabrooks had no qualms about manipulating animals and people with forms of remote hypnosis with various technologies. The CIA's Project MK-ULTRA utilized these apparently unscrupulous persons to test weapons and mind-control devices on Americans and Canadian citizens. Some of this information came out in the 1980s when Congress was reviewing the CIA, and is still coming forth as files get declassifed. The CIA through MK-ULTRA perpetrated heinous, documented acts like the infamous death of Frank Olson. In November of 1953 the well known mind-control expert Dr. Sydney Gottlieb put LSD in the drink of a biochemist named Dr. Frank Olson while they and other TSS operatives held an informal seminar at an isolated Maryland cabin. A few days later, Olson went flying through the glass of a closed window on the tenth floor of the Statler Hotel in New York [Lee and Shlain in Robert Guffey's A Brief History of Modern Mind Control Technology, p. 2]. Gottlieb and other specialists announced then that they were fighting communism by experimenting with LSD. Events like Olson's death were usually called suicide, but Guffey comments, A more likely scenario is that an angered Olson threatened to expose the Agency's Nazi-like tactics and was disposed of accordingly [2]. More in the background for our study of scurrilous deeds is reported by Gregory and Rappoport in Guffey who tells us: Since 1975 the tragedy of Frank Olson has become somewhat of an archetype for the LSD shenanigans perpetuated by the Agency, but Olson was by no means the final victim of the cryptocracy's lust for experimentation. After first being interviewed by Fox News, flight attendant Anne Marie Smith told the U.S. attorney's office that Condit urged her not to talk to authorities and asked her to sign an affidavit denying what she said was a yearlong affair. Law enforcement officials wonder what else Condit may have disposed of, not just the night of the voluntary apartment search, but in the weeks prior to that, and are very interested in questioning him. Meanwhile, police will talk to hundreds of taxi drivers at a scheduled event in the city's RFK Stadium Saturday. They will look at drivers' daily logs and pass out flyers to see if any one of them may have picked up missing federal intern Chandra Levy. There is no evidence that Levy rode in a cab the week she disappeared, but police know she doesn't have a car, said Asst. Police Chief Terry Gainer. Gainer said investigators have also completed an electronic background check of virtually everyone enrolled at the 24-year-old's health club, where the woman was last seen on April 30. A few club members had questionable backgrounds, which police are investigating. But none of them seem to be tied to Levy, Gainer said. On Friday, Rep. Bob Barr, R-Ga., filed a seven-page formal complaint with the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct outlining specific allegations of misconduct against Condit and reiterating his request for an investigation. The committee previously stated it would defer an investigation due to the ongoing law enforcement investigation. Two other Republicans have called for Condit's resignation. Michigan Rep. Fred Upton said the Californian has not cooperated with authorities investigating this tragic case. Condit's attorney has said that the congressman has cooperated fully. Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., said Condit should resign if it's shown he lied about an affair. Also on Friday, D.C. police found two more bones in the city's Rock Creek Park. The two dogs brought in to check out the bones did not react to the remains as if they were human, but they will be sent to a police lab anyway. Investigators have discovered animal bones at the park during previous searches for clues in the missing person case. Police say Condit, one of more than 100 people they have interviewed, is not a suspect in Chandra's disappearance. Levy canceled her health club membership on the evening of April 30 and has not been seen since. However, she spent several hours the following day using the computer in her apartment, police said. Condit, who is married, admitted to having had an affair with Levy during his third interview with police, a police source said. Police Chief Charles Ramsey said the search for Levy, who is from Condit's Modesto, Calif., district, is the most extensive missing person investigation ever mounted by Washington police. We've had some high-profile missing persons cases, but this one has gone on so long, Ramsey said. As the search for Chandra continues, Ramsey is rejecting criticism that the Levy case is hurting his department's murder investigations. Crime goes on, and we've got to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, Ramsey said. And, in an interview published Friday, Ramsey said there was a fairly significant chance Levy will never be found. We have not found anything that points us in one direction or another, he told USA Today, noting that detectives haven't turned up any evidence that she is alive or dead. One has only to look at what happened in Vieques to realize that the Navy has no concern or consideration regarding human welfare and human life. He didn't. But Thursday morning, as the sun rose over the Treasure Coast, a dozen more of the black, 8- to 10-inch-long catfish were making their way across the street. Originally native to southeast Asia, the walking catfish, or clarias batrachus, as it is scientifically known, can walk short distances on land, moving from one water body to the next -- thanks to two unique aspects of its ana- Âtomy: auxiliary breathing organs and the strong spines of its fins that can lock, allowing it to walk. In its native environment, the walking catfish inhabits muddy swamps, ponds, ditches, and rice paddies, but it initially came to America from Thailand as a popular pet shop item. Paul Shafland, a biologist with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's exotic fisheries laboratory in Boca Raton, said the odd catfish entered the Florida ecosystem during the 1960s, when several of the fish escaped from commercial fish farms near Deerfeld Beach and Tampa. Basically, they appear to have simply walked out of these facilities, Shafland said. Since then, the walking catfish has become one of the most extensively distributed of any exotic fish in the state, moving into a range stretching from Central Flo- Ârida to the southern tip of the peninsula. Besides surprising Florida homeowners from time to time with their sudden emergence -- often after heavy rains -- the walking catfish is considered somewhat problematic because it competes with native game species and is an efficient predator that devastates freshwater fish communities. Despite their presence in Florida wetlands, the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission requires people to secure a permit before owning one. We see them every once in a while, but because of the drought, it's probably been quite a long time since we've seen a significant emergence in this area, said Philip Baldwin, program director for the Florida Oceanographic Society. Baldwin theorizes that during the drought, populations of walking catfish continued to increase in deeper ponds and wetlands, and the rain provided the fish with a chance to find new places to live where there are fewer of them and more food sources. The walking catfish feeds on insect larvae, earthworms, shells, shrimp, small fish, aquatic plants and even debris and garbage. That's one reason they're so good at competing against native species, Baldwin said. They'll eat anything. Shafland said Baldwin's take on walking catfish is the common view, but one he disagrees with. Don't get me wrong, we consider these animals biological pollution. We don't like them and we don't want them here. But they simply haven't proven as catastrophic as once was feared, the biologist said. In fact, except for these isolated cases, we don't see nearly as many as we used to, Shafland continued. Heavy rains, thick clouds and, in some cases, even heavy morning dews, are key to inspiring the catfish's movement, he said. -Caveat Lector- HARLDY A PRETTY PLACE: USE ANWR FOR OIL EXPLORATION Jonah Goldberg ``Even if there were oil, let's say, in Central Park, in the Everglades, in Yosemite Valley, in the Redwoods, do we want to develop oil there? asked Deborah Williams in a recent broadcast of 60 Minutes. Williams, the executive director of the Alaska Conservation Foundation, believes the answer is obviously No. Williams is one of the leading spokespeople against oil exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, or ANWR (Anwar). And this argument has been offered, almost verbatim, by Jimmy Carter, Tom Daschle, Dick Gephardt and a host of others. It's a strong, persuasive argument. In fact there's only one problem with it: It's completely false. How do I know? Well, because I've been there. I recently returned from a trip (for a National Review article) to several hundred miles above the Arctic Circle to see what has become the Dome of the Rock of environmentalism. I've also been to Central Park. So, having been both places, let me tell you what's wrong with the comparison. First of all, if New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani learned that there were between 3 and 16 (ital) billion (end ital) barrels of oil underneath Central Park, he would be out there first thing Monday morning laying down orange traffic cones to save parking spaces for the roughnecks. But more to the point, Central Park is in many ways the exact opposite of the tiny sliver of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge being considered for oil development. Central Park is manmade, literally. The original land was filled with shanty towns sitting on mud flats and populated by dirt-poor Irish, blacks and Germans. Today, Central Park is beautiful and millions of people move through its 843 acres either by foot or by car every day. Now, consider ANWR. It is in Alaska, a state whose entire population is roughly equal to the city of Milwaukee, Wis. At the same time, the 49th state is big enough to fit France, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Italy (ital) combined (end ital) with room to spare. ANWR itself is huge by the standards of the lower 48, about the size of South Carolina, or the equivalent of more than 21,000 Central Parks. The differences don't end there. While preparing for my trip to ANWR, I'd read that this was the most beautiful place on Earth. This was the famous American Serengeti, as the enviros call it. Senator Joseph Lieberman, denouncing George Bush and Dick Cheney, predicted that oil exploration in ANWR would cause irreversible damage to one of God's most awesome creations. So, I was a little surprised to discover that if you wanted a picture to go with the word Godforsaken in the dictionary, ANWR would do nicely. Actually, that's not fair. You see, the environmentalists and their compatriots in the media play a dirty trick on the public. Most of ANWR is beautiful. But the pretty mountains and lakes you see on the evening news are safe from oil exploration by law and by the fact that there's no oil there. The oil is on the coastal plain at the very top of ANWR on the coast of the Arctic Ocean. And that ain't beautiful. Believe me. Winter on the coastal plain lasts for nine months. Total darkness reigns for 58 straight days. The temperatures drop to 70 degrees below zero without wind chill. This is the time of year when the oil companies would do almost all of their work; when nary a caribou nor any other creature would be dumb enough to venture out on to the frozen tundra for long. Regardless, ANWR's summer is no picnic either. The coastal plain is covered in a thick brick of ice for much of the year. When it melts, it creates, well, puddles. Lots and lots of puddles - and mud. This provides the (ital) lebensraum (end ital) that mosquitoes and other flying critters need to stretch their wings. In short, the section that Lieberman claims as one of God's most awesome creations is a colossal fetid petri dish for some of the worst flying pestilence you can imagine. Every moment I was outside, the mosquitoes swarmed around me like John McCain near a TV camera. The myth has been perpetuated that wildlife on the American Serengeti is more fragile than a butterfly's wings, especially for the exalted caribou. But, in next-door Prudhoe Bay, the number of caribou has increased fivefold since oil exploration began decades ago. One explanation for the caribou's success in Prudhoe is that the infrastructure gives the caribou an opportunity to hide from the trillions of mosquitoes, as well as the nostril flies (yes, they lay their eggs in the caribou's nose) and parasitic warble flies that make life a living hell for the animals. Opponents of drilling in ANWR succeed by appealing to the imaginations of guilty liberal environmentalists. So they compare ANWR to places we humans go and enjoy, like Central Park, Yosemite and other of God's most awesome creations.

That's the reason there's no damn evidence anywhere, and the red flag is that Condit VOLUNTEERED his apartment to search, knowing that his office is the prize. It was misdirection just like mama bird flapping her pretend-broken wing and leading the hunter away from the nest. THIS nest is at Condit's office--get those damned hard drives, check with local car detailers to find out who cleaned the dark SUV, and arrest that office staff because EVERYONE WAS IN ON THE HIT. Police made a sweep of a school that had been used as a headquarters by demonstrators early Sunday and protesters retaliated by attacking a nearby station of the Carabinieri paramilitary police, Italian state television reported. It said 40 protesters were injured and 50 were detained. Protester Michael Siefer, of Belgium, contacted by telephone by The Associated Press at the school, said police burst in and beat demonstrators. Police spokesman Mario Viola said the raid was carried out as a result of the violence over the last two days. Police seized iron bars, baseball bats, and bricks that were being used by protesters, he said. During the raids, one of protesters tried knife a policeman, but officer was wearing a bulletproof vest and was not injured, said Viola. Security remained unusually tight around the summit meeting center well past midnight and police cars zoomed back and forth in the security zone until around 3 a.m. when things seemed to quiet down. Infuriated by the shooting of a fellow protester a day earlier, masked demonstrators ripped up paving stones to hurl at police on Saturday, screaming, ``Assassins! Assassins!'' At least 228 people were hurt, in addition to the more than 200 injured the day before, and dozens of protesters were detained, some facing charges as serious as attempted murder. An extremist anti-Arab movement is suspected of being behind last week's shooting of three members of a West Bank family, including a three-month-old girl. In the recriminations that followed, Avraham Dichter, head of Shin Bet - Israel's equivalent of MI5 - admitted to Israel's parliament that such extremist cells exist. Suspicions about the link with the military intensified when a large quantity of army explosives was discovered in the car of an extremist settler's wife in Hebron. We suspect that huge quantities of arms were smuggled by officers sympathetic to the Jewish underground, said a security source close to the investigation. Postmortems on the three members of the al-Tmeizi family shot last week, have shown they were killed with 5.56mm bullets, used by the Israeli army. Most are first-rate, obedient and trustworthy, said the intelligence source. But we know there are some bad weeds among them. The group linked with the murders is the shadowy Committee for Road Safety, a cell connected to the anti-Arab movement, Kach. The committee was formed 20 years ago by Rabbi Meir Kahane, the guru of Jewish zealots. Kahane was killed in America and his son and daughter-in-law were murdered by Arabs. Police sources believe friends of Kahane's murdered son may have been the plotters of last week's attack. The security services' surveillance is also intended to locate collaborators who provide the Jewish cells with information about the army's movements. Israeli intelligence officers fear that collaborator networks could target politicians, a security priority for Shin Bet since its failure to prevent the murder of Yitzhak Rabin, the former prime minister, in 1995. This weekend Israeli security was preparing for a possible Palestinian retaliation. -Caveat Lector- US intelligence: Israel will attack By RICHARD SALE, UPI Terrorism Correspondent Friday, 20 July 2001 18:21 (ET) The CIA believes Israel's Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has decided to launch a retaliatory full-scale attack on Palestinian-controlled territory if there is another suicide bombing attack, several former Agency and other U.S. intelligence officials said. Some intelligence sources said they expected the Israeli attack probably within a matter of days. There's no question that he's going in, said a former CIA official, referring to Sharon. The question for these sources was when. They think the Israelis would wait until after the summit of the Group of Eight industrialized nations in Genoa, Italy. The summit ends Sunday. According to these sources, Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat was already engaged in talks with Syria about relocating Palestinian leaders to that country. One former CIA official, still active in the region, said he believed that Sharon would wait for the next in the recent wave of car-bomb attacks before launching a full-scale assault designed to drive Arafat into exile and destroy the PA. You'll have public outrage, you'll have high morale among the Israeli military -- it's the perfect time, the official said. However, senior Israeli officials, including Sharon himself, have insisted that troop movements this week were intended to strengthen Israel's defensive position. Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Melchior made this point in Washington Thursday. Reports of an impending all-out Israeli attack have come as relations have worsened between the Israeli government and the CIA. CIA Director George Tenet negotiated the cease-fire aimed at halting the seemingly endless violence in the West Bank and Gaza. The CIA has been at the center of the Bush administration's efforts to stop the fighting between Palestinians and the Israeli Defense Forces that has claimed more than 600 lives, most of them Palestinians. But the cease-fire has all but collapsed, and observers point out that its collapse could be seen as a CIA failure. A State Department official said, The situation does not look good, and We are all watching it, but he would not go so far as to confirm the impending attack. He also added that the Hadassah chain of hospitals in Israel has been ratcheting up its medical preparations. Asked to comment, a State Department official said only: You're getting into the area of sensitive foreign intelligence. We have no comment on intelligence operations. As United Press International reported exclusively on June 12, Israel's military was poised to carry out a huge, full-force invasion that would involve two infantry and paratroop divisions, an armored force, plus large numbers of U.S.-supplied F-16 and F-15 jet fighters and Apache helicopter gunships that would attack the West Bank and Gaza including the major Palestinian cities of Ramallah, Qualqilya, Jericho, Tul karm, Nablus, Jenin, and Bethlehem. Portions of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip would be captured and held for an indeterminate length of time. Under that plan, the Israeli forces would also capture and kill any members of Hamas, Hezbollah, the Islamic Jihad or other organizations defined by Israel as terrorist. A wanted list has already been drawn up by Israeli intelligence services and approved by Sharon, according to a U.S. administration official. At the time the plan was halted, thanks to strong warnings from senior Bush administration officials, U.S. government sources said. There was no official confirmation of this incident. Foreign ministers of the industrialized nations, meeting in Rome this week in advance of the G8 summit, repeated earlier calls for a force of international observers to be sent to the West Bank and Gaza to reduce the Palestinian-Israeli tension. Secretary of State Colin Powell said the United States would support international observers if Israel accepted them. But Sharon has rejected the proposal. Antony Cordesman, the Arleigh Burke Chair for Strategic Assessment at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said: Sharon didn't like having monitors because it ended the `My word against your word' game when it came seeing who was escalating the violence. What worries some U.S. intelligence analysts is that, as one put it, all the logistic and other preparations for such an assault have been completed, including beefing up Israeli medical treatment facilities. Others argue that the Israeli contingency plan has been in place for some time as an option if the situation worsened. The plan is in place, a U.S. intelligence official said. Sell all your old Mad magazines and have a sudden urge to zip down to New Orleans for a weekend of jazz and gambling? Before you stuff your pockets with Franklins and rush to the train station or airport, you'd better think twice -- the money you save might be your own. For years, travelers have been subject to the scrutiny of police and customs officers at train stations and airports. But disclosures of a quiet relationship between Amtrak and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency to share the proceeds of cash seized from travelers have alarmed civil libertarians and outraged some defense attorneys. As it turns out, similar profit-making arrangements have long been in place with many of the nation's air carriers, according to Sherry Strange, assistant special agent-in-charge at Atlanta's DEA office. In fact, she says, in addition to a "very successful" relationship with Amtrak over the years (including some seizures and arrests at Amtrak's Brookwood Station downtown), it's at Hartsfield International Airport where an observant ticket agent or bag-handler can really rack up some extra bucks for his employer by keeping an eye open. "We've had several good ones recently," Strange says. "There was a plane charter that came through Hartsfield with 49 kilos of cocaine and three arrests, and a number of seizures at the international terminal; customs handled most of those ... and a domestic flight where over $600,000 was seized about two months ago." As with Amtrak, she says the 10 percent payoff for such tips is generally the rule, "but it's not set in stone." It's those cash seizures -- and the bounties paid to the tipsters -- that worry some critics. "It's an inherent conflict of interest," says Jonesboro attorney Lee Sexton. "What happens is that all the gate agents and ticket agents have a profile they use ... you pay for your ticket in cash, and you just stay one day, and you have little luggage, then that ticket agent or whatever will call DEA and say, 'Here, I've got a suspect for you.' " Sexton says one of his clients -- the brother of a prominent state lawmaker -- was detained after paying cash for a ticket to Florida for a trip to the dog races. When agents found $30,000 in cash, Sexton says, they took it. Such occasions offer a glimpse into the workings of federal forfeiture laws, which allow police to seize cash and property and then force the owner to go to court and prove it is not the proceeds of crime -- a bizarre reversal of American jurisprudence. In the Amtrak case, a Vietnamese man paid cash for a one-way ticket from California to Boston. When a DEA computer linked to Amtrak's New Mexico office flagged the passenger, agents boarded the train and asked to search his belongings. They didn't find any drugs, but they found $149,000, which the man said were gambling winnings. In fighting to get his money back, the man's lawyer uncovered the arrangement by which Amtrak is entitled to 10 percent, unless his lawyer wins back the money -- minus legal fees, of course. And in April, according to a California judicial reform organization, Amtrak passenger Jennifer Leigh Ames was relieved of $640,000 after refusing to allow police to search her bags. "Believe me, we have a lot of people who are thankful that we do that," says Amtrak spokesman Kevin Johnson. "Because people who are involved in illicit drug activity usually have guns with them and other bad things." The DEA's Strange says these profit-sharing arrangements go back to 1984, when Congress passed laws allowing police wide latitude in seizing personal property and cash. Amtrak officials say they have no idea how much has been collected over the years. Amtrak officials also have dismissed concerns that such practices might violate U.S. privacy laws, which prohibit government agencies from sharing identifying data without going through proper procedures. Amtrak maintains that it was created by Congress as a private corporation and is thus immune to Privacy Act standards. "When you buy an Amtrak ticket, you provide your name, a method of payment and a contact [telephone] number," says Amtrak spokeswoman Lynn Bowersox. "That's the only information that we would have to provide any law enforcement agency." According to Strange, several criteria -- which she declines to reveal -- are used by would-be profilers to target passengers for scrutiny. And, she says, while the past year or so has been quiet at Brookwood, rail carrier tip-offs have led to hundreds of seizures over the years. Questions as to how much money has been seized from Amtrak, forwarded to DEA's Washington, D.C., headquarters, remain "under review" by the agency, as do queries about air carrier profits, including those for Atlanta-based Delta. Allen A nursing home aide earning minimum wage caring for Alzheimer's patients is an unskilled laborer. A grade school teacher pulling down $25,000 a year in a crumbling inner-city school is barely a professional. But a politician reaping power, pay, perks and retirement packages is a public servant. Calling George W. Bush and Jesse Helms "public servants" is like calling Iran-contra criminal Elliott Abrams an "outstanding diplomat"--which is precisely what White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer did when he announced Abrams' appointment as senior director of the National Security Council's Office for Democracy, Human Rights and International Operations. Fleischer conveyed Bush's faith-based assertion that Abrams is "the best person to do the job," which, happily for the appointee, does not require Senate confirmation. For those who don't remember, Abrams was one of the most odious participants in a particularly shameful chapter of U.S. history. In the '80s, he was Ronald Reagan's assistant secretary of state for human rights and humanitarian affairs and later the assistant secretary of state for inter-American affairs. In that post, Abrams, in his own words, "supervised U.S. policy in Latin America and the Caribbean." That policy included backing the contras--a surrogate army dedicated to overthrowing the democratically elected Sandinista government of Nicaragua. It also involved funding the military thugocracy of El Salvador and supervising its war against a popular leftist rebellion. In his role as public servant, Abrams found time to cover up the genocidal policies of the Guatemalan government and embrace the government of Honduras while it perpetrated serial human rights abuses through Battalion 3-16, a U.S.-trained "intelligence unit" turned death squad. Thick as thieves with Oliver North, Abrams helped evade congressional restrictions on aid to the contras. When Congress--spurred on by protests and embarrassing press disclosures--grew wary of the Central American wars, the Reaganites sought other avenues for funding them. Ever eager to serve, Abrams flew to London under the alias "Mr. Kenilworth" to solicit a $10 million contribution from the Sultan of Brunei. In the congressional investigations that followed disclosure of the Iran-contra conspiracies, Abrams was never held accountable for the human rights violations backed, hidden and funded by the Reagan administration. Instead Abrams was accused of withholding information from Congress, a Washington euphemism for bald-face lying. In 1991, he copped to two counts of withholding information from Congress (and was granted a Christmas Eve pardon a year later by President George Bush). Abrams was none too pleased, even with this slap on the wrist. According to a May 30, 1994 article in Legal Times, he called his prosecutors "filthy bastards," the proceedings against him "Kafkaesque," and members of the Senate Intelligence Committee "pious clowns" whose raison d'être was to ask him "abysmally stupid" questions. (In the spirit of full disclosure: Abrams once called me a "rotten bitch" after I tactlessly noted that much of the world considers him a war criminal.) Abrams' own "full biography," posted on the Web site of the Ethics and Public Policy Center--an oxymoronic think tank where he wiled away much of the Democratic interregnum awaiting the collective amnesia of the American public--omits his unpleasantness with Congress. In any case, as Fleischer said of Abrams' transgressions, "the president thinks that's a matter of the past and was dealt with at the time." Loved ones of the thousand unarmed Salvadoran peasants, including 139 children, killed by U.S.-trained contra troops in the 1981 El Mozote massacre may be less inclined to let bygones be bygones. Abrams has been a consistent massacre denier, even calling Washington's policy in El Salvador a "fabulous achievement." He told Congress that the reports carried in the New York Times and Washington Post a month after El Mozote were Communist propaganda. In 1993, members of a Salvadoran Truth commission testified about the massacre in a congressional hearing of the House Western Hemisphere subcommittee. Chairman Robert G. Torricelli (D-New Jersey) vowed to review for possible perjury "every word uttered by every Reagan administration official" in congressional testimony on El Salvador. Abrams denounced Torricelli's words as "McCarthyite crap." Eventually documentation emerged proving that the Reagan administration had known about El Mozote and other human rights violations all along. Abrams, however, carefully denied knowledge of the assassination of Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero, committed shortly after the cleric denounced government terror. According to the Russian language interview with Alexander Katalov, president of Elcomsoft and an ex-KGB operative himself, his firm had performed work for the FBI itself. An INQUIRER reader has translated the interview for us, the original of which can be found here. Here is his translation in full: The Elcomsoft president, Mr. Alexander Katalov gives details on the arrest of his company emloyee, Dmytry Sklyarov. Alexander, how was Dmitry arrested? On Sunday there was a DefCon conference. Dmitry had delivered there our "eBook Security: Theory and practise" presentation. On Monday morning, at around 9am, he was checking out of the hotel together with another employee. On the way out of the hotel, two individuals stopped them. They presented their FBI IDs and immediately handcuffed Dmitry. Detained, the employees were put into separate rooms. With Andrey they interviewed him for just half an hour, asking what and how, and he was allowed to leave the building right after. He had tried to get me on the phone, but could not get through. So, after he called our Moscow office at around 9:30am, Moscow had already notified me via e-mail about his arrest. Is Dmitry Sklyarov the sole "Advanced eBook Processor" program author, the very program he got arrested because of? Naturally, he is not the only one. Moreover, he was developing the "scientific part" of the program, its algorithms. This work is a part of his dissertation. There were at least three employees, working on the program; the program itself comes under Elkomsoft brand. However, it seems that now the Americans are trying to present the situation as a hacking, conducted by a single Russian hacker. So, does it look like Dmitry was detained only due to his DefCon presentation? Probably yes. Though he introduced himself as an Elcomsoft employee, the company that developed the product. What are your lawers saying? Our lawers were notified on arrest in the evening, when everything was closed down already. That's how it was developing: after I received the email, I called the Russian Consulate. They proposed to wait until noon at consulate, assuming that the Americans would let Dmitry board the flight en-route LAX, where Aeroflot flight would bring him back to Russia. But he did not show up at the airport, so the consulate initialized a standard offical request to American authorities. They spent around two hours on that and we all realized that Dmitry will not fly away for sure. In fact we even did not know where Dmitry was physically located. At around 2pm the request was filed but not till the end of working day, till 6pm was there any answer. So on Monday we had no info. Tuesday morning, when our office had started its new working day in Moscow, Dmitry's wife called in. She said that she had a call from the US, and via an interpreter she was told that her husband is under arrest. She was not allowed to talk to him directly. This US call was at around 4am Moscow time, so it was still Monday, around 3pm here in US. So this meant that the authorities had not responded to the request filed by the Russian Consulate on Monday. Are there any offical charges already? As far as I can tell from the words of Dima's wife (and she did not understand it all clearly due to early morning situation itself, plus she also has a 2-month old baby), it looks like charges were preferred yesterday. And it was decided that Dmitry would be spending time in the jail, because there are no people ready to pay the bail bonds. Bear in mind, the US authorities had never notified either the Russian Consulate or us. After this case and another recent arrest of Russian hackers it looks like the FBI has acquired a new way of working: to lure Russian programmers out of Russia and to arrest them in the US under local legislation. Before this time, were your employees attending similar events to DefCon? Have there been similar situations before? Well, we did attend Black Hat conference without any problem. Moreover, in April we had sponsored the conference on informational security for the US law inforcement agencies. So the arrest we are talking about is relevant to the accusation against Dmitry. Mordechai Vanunu wanted to prevent a world disaster. That's why in 1986 the former Israeli nuclear technician told the world that Israel was building a secret nuclear arsenal. Fifteen years later, Vanunu, 46, lingers in prison, serving an 18-year sentence for treason. And this May, the Israeli government announced that when he is released in three years, he will be kept under house arrest. Vanunu's attempt to stop the arms race in the Middle East has so far been fruitless. The United States, while condemning the nuclear aspirations of Iraq and North Korea, has maintained a stoic silence on Israel's nuclear bomb program. Now President George W. Bush is pushing a missile defense system that is certain to fuel arms build-up. "The existence of nuclear weapons in Israel is a well-known secret to the world. It is also well known to the Israeli people, but it is still a taboo subject," said Michael Christ, executive director of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW). In Washington, D.C., a strong Israeli lobby pumps millions of dollars into the coffers of political candidates to promote on-ongoing American support of Israeli policies, including its conflicts with Palestinians and neighboring Arab countries. Pro-Israel lobby groups donated nearly $5 million to political campaigns for the 2000 election cycle. Former vice presidential candidate Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) was the number one recipient of pro-Israeli contributions, receiving $224,000. Bush received $135,000, more than double Al Gore's $56,000. Lieberman, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, is also a big recipient of defense contractor donations, receiving $112,000 for the last election. In control of the White House once more, Republicans have pushed nuclear issues back to the forefront -- from energy, to weapons and missile defense. But this has also fueled the revival of anti-nuclear activism and international citizens groups demanding the elimination of nuclear weapons. Campaign to Free the Whistleblower In 1994, Mary and Nick Eoloff, of St. Paul, Minnesota, read a magazine article about the International Campaign to Free Mordechai Vanunu. The article prompted readers to write to the nuclear whistleblower and the Eoloffs did so. Their correspondence turned into friendship, which in 1997 inspired the Eoloffs -- long-time anti-nuke advocates -- to legally adopt Vanunu. At age nine, Vanunu emigrated with his family from Morocco to Israel. As a young man he served in the army, as all Israeli youth are required to do. He later went on to work in the Dimona nuclear research center, which harbored a secret underground plutonium separation plant. All nuclear weapons workers had to take an oath of secrecy. But Vanunu increasingly questioned the morality of his work, believing that by building nuclear weapons Israel was fueling an arms race. In 1985, before Vanunu quit his job at Dimona, he took extensive photographs inside the reactor. Vanunu then traveled to Australia. There, disillusioned with Israel, he converted to Christianity, a decision that so outraged his Orthodox Jewish parents that they disowned him. Vanunu then contacted the press. The Sunday Times of London flew him to England to verify the story before breaking the news in October 1986 that Israel had become a nuclear power. At the same time, the Israelis had tracked Vanunu down, and a female agent lured him to Italy where other agents kidnapped and drugged him, dragging him back to Israel on a cargo ship. He was charged with espionage and treason and convicted in a secret trial. Until now the field marshal has been seen as an upright soldier with a conventional life, happily married to his wife Lucie with a son, Manfred. The existence of his second family has emerged in a collection of more than 150 letters and photographs, kept for decades by his illegitimate daughter Gertrud Pan at her home in Kempten, southern Germany. The letters emerged after Gertrud's death last year. "There were hints from some fellow officers and an army nurse, and eventually I put it to the museum curator in Rommel's home town, who confirmed the family's existence," said Sallyann Kleibel, producer of The Real Rommel, to be shown on Channel 4 on August 2. Rommel met Lucie in 1911 in Danzig. During a temporary posting in Weingarten, hundreds of miles away, he met the teenage Walburga Stemmer, and they had an affair. In 1913 Gertrud, their daughter, was born, to Rommel's delight. He wrote to Walburga, calling her his "little mouse". He said he would like to set up home with her and Gertrud: "It's got to be perfect, this little nest of ours." However, he returned to Lucie and married her in 1916. Walburga never recovered from her rejection. Gertrud's son Josef Pan, 62, a fruit and vegetable wholesaler from Kempten, whose family own the letters, said: "Rommel was Walburga's only love. As long as Rommel and Lucie never had children she held on to the conviction that he would return to her. When Manfred was born in 1928 she took an overdose . . . The explanation given in public was that she had died of pneumonia. Later the family doctor told my mother she had taken her own life." Gertrud exchanged hundreds of letters with her father. She knitted him a scarf, which he wore frequently at the battlefront. Lucie knew about Gertrud, but to Manfred she was always "cousin Gertrud". She was a frequent visitor to the family and was at Rommel's hospital bedside after he returned ill from Africa. There, she answered the telephone when a furious Hitler ordered him back to Africa, where he was defeated at El Alamein. She stayed close to the family even after her father's death.

In 1964, the ship photographed an unusual object at a depth of 13,500 feet. At the time, there was no submarine that could have carried a piece of technology to this depth. The object appears to be a pole rising from the ocean floor with twelve spokes radiating from it, each ending in a sphere. The spokes are at fifteen degree angles to each other. It is located approximately 1,000 miles south of Cape Horn, beneath some of the most inhospitable seas in the world. Marine biologists have speculated that it might be some sort of an organism, largely because it is otherwise so difficult to explain. However, there is no known form of marine life that looks remotely like this object. There exists the possibility that it is an antenna or other scientific instrument that was lost by an early research vessel, but once again, this would appear to be a very forced explanation. It seems unlikely that an object could drop through three miles of ocean, and anchor itself on the bottom. In addition, the position of the antenna is so exact, and so strangely significant, that it would seem almost certain that it was intentionally put there. Who did it, with what technology and why remains unknown. However, it's clear that there could be an enormous secret connected with the Eltanin antenna, and one that might not be entirely unknown to certain members of the scientific community, as will be seen. Researcher Bruce Cathie, a New Zealander who, among other things, had a famous series of UFO sightings, has developed a theory about the antenna based on its position on the planet. Cat hie's theories suggest that the antenna may be part of an ancient planetary grid that is of fundamental importance to an understanding of our planet and the great 25,000 year cycle known as the precession of the equinox. Could it be possible that the Eltanin Antenna is a piece of ancient technology, or even technology that comes from another world? Cathie certainly thinks so. Other researchers are now suggesting that modern science might be well aware of the purpose of the object, and might be actively monitoring it or using it in some way. Mr. Cathie considers 144, the harmonic recriprocal of the speed of light, to be an important measure of the earth's grid because it divides into the planet's 21,600 minutes of arc exactly 150 times. An individual interested in Cathie's ideas began measuring outward in steps from the antenna, and to his surprise found that the Prospect Point Antarctic Base is precisely eight of these measures away. Add another unit of 144 and you find two more antarctic bases, Hemus and St. Kilmet. Remarkably, a whole array of bases and earthquake stations surround the Eltanin Antenna. What this may mean is unknown, but it is certainly suggestive that the Eltanin antenna is no strange marine creature, but rather an object of great importance, that somebody understands very well. Indeed, it is a battle that has been waged since earliest human history. Ever since the first semi-rotten, half-fermented fruit produced the first alcoholic buzz, man--or at least a goodly chunk of the population--has sought out one form of altered consciousness or another. So it is no surprise that OxyContin, which comes in a time-release pill and is similar to morphine, has become the source of a relatively cheap high in rural areas far from urban drug supplies. Nor is it a wonder that people with chronic pain seek the drug--it is a very effective painkiller. Doctors readily prescribe it precisely because it isn't morphine. But now OxyContin use is being stymied by fears of its abuse. A patient may have good reason to want to avoid giving his or her fingerprints to the drug store, all but declaring to the world that they are a likely drug abuser or con artist. Perhaps a solution is not to treat painkillers like controlled substances, but to treat currently controlled substances more like standard painkillers. It might be interesting to find out why the Condits went into his office on a Sunday afternoon... Wasn't it on this day that Chandra Levy called her aunt to say that she had something important to tell her? Monday, April 30 Staff pick him up for work. At 11:30 a.m. ET, he goes to the White House with other members of Congress for lunch and the announcement of a budget agreement. At 1:30 p.m. ET, Condit and the other members of Congress head back to their Capitol Hill offices. At 5:30 p.m. ET, Condit leaves work, heads home and eats dinner with his wife. Tuesday, May 1 Condit rides with staff to the office in the morning. At 12:30 p.m. ET, he meets with Vice President Dick Cheney. Now Condit's initial timeline that was released by his office had the White House lunch and the meeting with Cheney both occuring on 5/1... So...if he wasn't having lunch in the White House at 11:30 on 5/1, where was he? What exact time did he allegedly ride with the staffer to the office on that day...? Also, initially the meeting with Cheney was reported (in the agenda presented by Condit's own office) as starting at 1pm, not 1:30...a meeting that lasted only 45 minutes... If the meeting indeed started a half hour earlier, it was over before 2pm...if it did start at the later time, he was finished by 2:15... Cheney's office is only a short distance from Condit's office, yet: He returns at 3:30p.m. for meetings and phone conversations with constituents. So there is at least 45 minutes unaccounted for, or possibly more than an hour...perhaps he stopped for a hotdog after the meeting with Cheney, if the White House lunch indeed did not happen that morning...if it did, then Condit had already had lunch, which makes the gap of time even more intriguing, happening as it does so close in time to the last time Levy supposedly logged off of her computer, never to be seen or heard from again... At 5 p.m., Condit has a doctor's appointment. At 6:30 p.m., he votes on the House floor. From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., he meets with a reporter at the Tryst restaurant in Adams Morgan. Later, he and the wife stay home and eat dinner. Unfortunately, doctor-patient confidentiality rules preclude Condit's doctor discussing the nature of the appointment -- but I believe his office can be made to verify that Condit at least showed up at 5pm... it's interesting that no one has seemed to pursue this doctor angle... And we now know that the meeting with the reporter actually happened the next day, on 5/2so here's another discrepancy masking a gap of time on 5/1...at least an hour, perhaps more, as we don't know how long Condit was allegedly at the doctor's, if he indeed was ever there that day at all (a question that should be looked into, as he's already misrepresented the day on which the meeting with the reporter occurred). Wednesday, May 2 Condit rides into work with staff and attends Agriculture Committee and Select Intelligence Committee meetings. At 11:30 a.m., Condit casts votes on the House floor. At noon, he participates in a meeting with Democratic congressional leaders. At 2:30 p.m., he returns to the Intelligence Committee. Later, he casts several votes on the House floor before heading home for dinner with his wife at 5:30 p.m. After dinner, they go shopping at an Off The Wall store. Again, we now know that the meeting with the reporter occurred on this day, not the day before...so Condit could NOT have been at home having dinner with his wife at 5:30, because he was meeting with the reporter at Tryst at 6:30... Anyone know what Off the Wall sells? Unfortunately for the suspects -- now facing robbery charges -- crisp, digital images from the Oakland train station's new surveillance cameras caught them in a lie. Similar cameras are being installed in another two of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit's busiest stations. The surveillance system represents the latest in video technology, the kind also cropping up in schools, street corners, even restaurants. The images are much better, BART police Sgt. Frank Lucarelli said. You can blow them up and they don't degrade as much. It's a far cry from BART's old patchwork of cameras, which produced the blurry, hard-to-follow shots often seen on television crime shows. The latest setup features live streaming video with sharp, color images at up to 500 lines of resolution, compared with the old system's 160 lines in black and white. Only partially installed, the new system has already yielded footage that helped police solve 10 crimes. Once fully in place, the equipment will allow police or dispatchers to remotely monitor and control the cameras, zooming in on trouble spots from headquarters miles away. Digital surveillance systems are growing more powerful, less expensive -- and increasingly common. To privacy advocates, they are ominous and invasive. Whether it's the Big Brother of government or the little brother of industry, both pose a threat to our privacy, said Barry Steinhardt, associate director of the American Civil Liberties Union. Revenues related to video surveillance more than tripled from $282 million in 1990 to more than $1 billion in 2000, and the Security Industry Association forecasts that they could grow to $1.63 billion by 2005. The latest technology lets operators pan, tilt, or zoom their cameras via the Internet or a company's computer network. A single monitor can simultaneously display images from up to 16 cameras, reducing the expense of multiple screens. Finding a particular image used to mean hours of scrolling through analog tapes. Doing it digitally takes less than a minute. These cameras are so good today, and the software to control and record them is available at a reasonable cost, said Dale Scheideman, planning director of the Clark County School District in Nevada. Using a laptop, he said, I can sit in the parking lot of a school and can view the inside of the school. The Las Vegas-area district is spending $16 million to install the cameras in 250 schools. With a camera that can zoom in on license plates from 100 yards away, Scheideman said, school officials recently caught a young man trying to break into a car. Business is booming, said Patrick Blair, a vice president with Vital Link Business Systems. The San Francisco-based company provides monitoring services to restaurants, allowing owners to watch their kitchens and dining areas over password-protected Internet connections. Vital Link opened two years ago and claims 2,500 customers nationwide. The equipment costs several hundred dollars to install and $250 per month for a standard four-camera package. Century Fast Foods is outfitting its 41 Taco Bell franchises in Southern California with monitoring systems to keep an eye on customer service and employee theft -- a common problem in the transient fast-food work force. I could go on vacation and still watch my restaurants, said Jim Clark, the company's vice president of operations. Another start-up, Vantum Corp. of Boulder, Colo., has a remote video monitoring system that can begin recording automatically in response to motion, a light turning on, or distinct sounds such as breaking glass. The systems, which cost from $1,295 to $1,995 apiece, can trip an alarm or send alerts by page, e-mail or telephone. Within a year, operators of Vantum's cameras should be able to program them to follow the movements of a given object or person. This stuff isn't science fiction anymore, said Howdy Pierce, the company's chief executive. Government-backed surveillance systems are perhaps the most controversial, leading to fears of an Orwellian society. Well, if one makes the highs and lows where one wishes them, and judiciously and somewhat slowly moves them along a given path, these highs and lows will entrain the jet streams and thus steer the weather. So if you wish a very cold snap or attack, go up into Canada and start these actions to steer down some streams that bring some very frigid air. Establish other highs and lows judiciously to block or slow other jet streams and flows as desired. In this way, one can pull the large cold air masses coming down from Canada deep into the southern U.S. at will. They do it regularly. If you wish an ice storm, add an additional current of warm moist air you bring up (steer up by using artificial highs and lows) from the ocean. Where they meet, you will get freezing rain, then sleet, then severe icing accumulating. This type of attack does rather large damage to the struck area. "A Spy in Rome" by Peter Tompkins, 1962 London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, addresses OSS operations in Rome in 1943 prior to Anzio -- and throughout, the subversion of the very strong socialist wing Tompkins relied on for information that was vital to the liberation of Rome. In the book, the overtones of OSS subversion are clear, the collaboration of units of the OSS with the mafia, and also the nearly complete elimination of the the socialist party leadership (involved in the resistence)during these harrowing days in 1943.The records of the Italian Resistence 1943-1946 are housed at Hoover Institution, Stanford University, as further future sourcing. 2. "Una Storia Segreta," Larry DiStasi, editor, released June 2001: Berkeley, CA: Heyday Books, notes the role of the ONI in identifying Americans of Italian descent active in government and communities in the San Francisco Bay Area as early as 1936 -- people who were later interned in 1941 and1942. This resulted in control over the docks, warehouses and the political appartus of the SF Bay Area and west coast,moving to organized crime -- and infiltration of unions on the west coast. That Joe Bonanno, Edgar Bronfman, Joe Alioto gained stature and connections during WWII is documented in their participation on the Board of Economic Warfare (Alioto's obituary, and Aaaron's Loftus "Secret War Against the Jews," as to Bronfman, Bechtel, Henry J. Kaiser,Gianinni of B of A, Nelson A. Rockefeller as chair of this Board. Records with the Dept. of Justice for the Board of Economic Warfare recently released indicate the board was created by FDR Executive Order in March 1942, and disbandedby Executive Order in September 1943. In addition, by Executive Order Roosevelt for the first time shifted responsibility for intelligence reporting from his office to that of the VP (in this case Henry A. Wallace). An interesting exception that wasn't an exception: Bill Casey made himself a member of Reagan's cabinet -- he reported to President Reagan while Deputy Director CIA, Robert Gates, reported directly to George H. W. Bush during the Reagan administration. See Joseph A. Persico's "Casey." There is too little information to determine what, if any, aspects of "Elephant Herd" were put into play by Bush. 6. A biography -- good one by Joseph Persico "The Imperial Rockefeller - A Biography of Nelson A. Rockefeller" details the fact that Nelson created a corporation in Peru and introduced the first tuna fleet after the war had settled down -- somewhere online there is an article that details thefleet was disbanded because it was being used to haul drugs. This book is also a good one for fixing dates and various capers of Rockefeller -- his service on the Board of Economic Warfare, then Coordinator of Latin American Affairs, his role is seeing that Argentina was admitted to the U.N., his right wing advances, his role "appointing people" to the first HUD position in New York (Michael Eisner's father who then served more than 20 years in that capacity), and throughout the period Nelson was Governor of New York (when money moved out quickly and without notice, by the buckets -- NY oversaw Puerto Rico and they are the two

As we saw it the carabineraie started by pulling up about 2-300m up the road in initially around four to five vans. They got out and started to jog down the street in riot gear and batons. People saw them and started to enter both buildings - the main GSF (Genoa Social Forum) building (where the Indy media Center was also located) and the school opposite which was part of the GSF facilities. The school had been a safe space for people to sleep and chill for a few days. In the school there were a diverse bunch of people. As the convergence center was quite close, many people came to get information on the counter conference and the solidarity marches and also to use computers. Many people who slept in the school were participants from the marches, a group of pacifists from Zaragoza had come to the school to sleep just fifteen minutes before the arrived, (as it was the only really safe space to sleep) and ended up with eight hospitalised and more detained by the carabineraie. The carabineraie, having reached the school and the GSF building started to arbitrarily beat people with the batons as people scrabbled to get inside either building. The door were closed on the GSF building but they entered from, not the main door, but one which was not secured at the side - not secured as this was just not expected. I can only tell from what happened now from the IMC as I was there working. The IMC tried to calm people down as the carabineraie came in and demanded that all of us stand spread -eagle against the wall for about 30 minutes whilst the people wandered in and out of the rooms a bit listlessly, looking for anything incriminating - as if. They then moved everyone into one area and everyone had to sit down for another twenty minutes or so. What they found and took was some of the equipment like mini disks videos and disks and searched many peoples bags. They also took some salad knives from the kitchen and a couple of gas masks. Later after it was all over they said to the press that they saw quite a lot of black clothes inside the rooms, well excuse me. Apparently opposite the police took all available passports and wallets and diaries from peoples bags. The carabineraie tried to take one of the IMC people but another journalist with G8 accreditation stepped in and although he was pushed back the carabineraie left the other guy alone. They finally left when a women MP who was in the building came to our floor and had powers to make to carabineraie leave - due to the fact that we were an international group and also journo/press. The police left, but we discovered that the people on the other floors of the GSF building had had freedom to roam after only being held on the floor for a short time. Also the GSF Lawyers office was ransacked and the computers destroyed, hard drives taken and the phones smashed. So much for the law. The computers conatined all of the info relating to legal aid etc over the last few days. The carabineraie obviously had their purpose here, one mission being to search the IMC floor to find something to discredit the IMC media movement. After they left people immediately checked their gear and recorded what was taken, and then the keypads started burning. Then we discovered the fucking mass beatings next door where people were already sleeping and others had been eating and talking, many IMC people stayed outside to somberly record the devastation and support those in shock and disbelief at what had just occurred. Tears and shouts of assinos followed the police who for another half an hour or so were still blocking off exits. Many people outside had been chanting let them free whilst we were up against the wall and the school was being emptied with stretcher after stretcher of young men and women being carried out. The story from across the street in the school was that when police arrived they grabbed the first people they could outside and beat them heavily. One of the first to be beaten was a UK reporter who was smashed repeatedly by a group of them. One held him by his neck while the others beat him with clubs. Unconscious he was left in the street in a pool of blood (later when we were allowed out of the building the blood had been cleaned off the pavement). Their intention was clear then from the start. Inside the building when police entered many people inside raised their hands but the police just started smashing windows. One group then ran to the third floor and managed to escape out

VAUGHN MARLOWE: Known as Vaughn Snipes in 1963, he sat on the executive committee of Fair Play for Cuba in Los Angeles. He also ran a leftist bookstore in L.A. Snipes/Marlowe spoke to investigator-author Dick Russell about the John Kennedy assassination and appears in The Man Who Knew Too Much. By his own account, he was considered for recruitment as a rifleman in a June 1963 plot against JFK in L.A. Marlowe, now in his '60s, lives in Newport, Oregon. In 1990, when Russell made contact with him, he ran a small sign shop and homeless shelter. He went to work for KPFK-FM in 1964. At this time he changed his name to Marlowe after Raymond Chandler's fictional detective. In 1967 he sent a letter to Jim Garrison, signed Don Gordon, to inform him of Richard Nagell's interest in him. One telegram sent to Nagell in prison in 1964 from Santa Monica was attached to a note typed by Nagell: The original of the xerox copy of a telegram is a significant piece of hard evidence substantiating the existence of a conspiracy to assassinate President Kennedy. It contains a coded message and was sent to me in El Paso in April 1964 before my first trial. The note describes a possible personal relationship between Oswald and Marlowe. Marlowe served in Korea, and after the war lived in Flint, Michigan, where he associated with a group of Trotskyites. He moved in the early '60s to San Francisco, then L.A. Marlowe became an organizer for the Congress of Racial Equality, and joined the board of Fair Play for Cuba. He was an unusual Trotskyite, arriving at a political rally held at UCLA in 1963 with a dozen ex-convicts in tow. AC
