[slim] New How-To: Installing SlimServer on LinkStation
Marc, I am really grateful that someone has put all this information down in one place. It gave me confidence, at last, to go ahead and try installing the slimserver on my linkstation. Everything seemed to be going just fine, but I ran into a problemright at the last step(under "testing and finishing") . I typed in: mnt/slimserver# ./slimserver.pl --daemon --prefsfile /mnt/slim-data/slimserver.pref --cachedir /mnt/slim-data, as you suggested, butthe following response came up: = [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/mnt/share# cd /mnt/slimserver [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/mnt/slimserver# ./slimserver.pl --daemon --prefsfile /mnt/slim -data/slimserver.pref --cachedir /mnt/slim-data The following modules failed to load: DBD::SQLite XML::Parser HTML::Parser Compr ess::Zlib To download and compile them, please run: /mnt/slimserver/Bin/build-perl-modules .pl [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/mnt/slimserver# ps -A PID TTY TIME CMD 1 ? 00:00:04 init 2 ? 00:00:00 keventd 3 ? 00:00:02 ksoftirqd_CPU0 4 ? 00:00:55 kswapd [many lines deleted] 1391 ? 00:00:09 atalkd 1486 ? 00:00:00 papd 1488 ? 00:00:00 afpd 1490 ? 00:00:10 smbd 1527 ? 00:00:00 ppc_uartd 1590 ? 00:00:00 in.telnetd 1591 pts/0 00:00:00 bash 1605 pts/0 00:00:00 ps [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/mnt/slimserver# /mnt/slimserver/Bin/build-perl-modules.pl Welcome to the Slim Devices perl module installer. I don't think I have a C compiler on my computer, and I don't know that the modules DBD::SQLite XML::Parser HTML::Parser Compress::Zlib are. Any suggestions? Rod Tucker BTW, when I copied perl and the slimserver to the relevant directories, both files had a .tar.tar suffix rather than the .tar.gz suffix as listed in your notes. Richard, I'm afraid you're under a multiple misunderstanding. I'm not selling anything at £129 (or any other price - I'm a customer, not a retailer); Stuart is selling something for £129, but it's not a squeezebox, it's a DAB USB radio. As for your question - someone else might be able to answer it better. I've recently become the happy owner of two Squeezeboxes, but I've never seen a Roku in the flesh, still less used or heard one. As I understand it, the basic Roku is very similar architecturally to the original Squeezebox (whereas the new Squeezebox2 has some enhancements). There's also a version with a much bigger display, for a lot more cash. On software, the SlimDevices boxes will I guess always benefit first from enhancements to SlimServer - but because Slim release the software under a GPL OpenSource agreement, Roku are able to use it for their customers also. OTOH, if you buy 'protected' music from the iTunes music store, the Roku should be able to play these directly, whereas SlimServer currently has to go through contortions. (Again - all this is my understanding - I've never used Roku, and I won't buy music from iTMS.) I can say that in my direct experience, supported by many comments I've seen from others, SlimDevices offer exceptional customer service. Indeed, However at least for me, the buttons are even smaller than the others. Also it seems pretty plain (no insult at all do whomever did the skin). It would look much nicer to have the excession or slim skin. I have tried all of the skins, at 800x600 they can be used with some care, but seeing this is the only thing I am going to run on these machines there is no reason not to take full advantage of the screen real estate. While this makes perfect sense in theory, the linux kernel (among others) is written with the expectation of having a swap space, and it makes decisions about scheduling, caching and memory management based on that assumption. [slim] Starting slimserver in Windows
Hi there, I'm running Slimserver 5.4.1 for Windows. Upgrading to the latest version 6 completely screwed my system so I'm back with the old one. I am using Itunes to keep my music organized and therefore would like to run the Itunes plugin as well which updates my ratings etc. Everything is working fine except that I have not found a clever way of starting slimserver. I used to run it as a service but I want to use the direct update functionality of the Itunes plugin - for that it must not run as a service. When I simply put SlimServer.exe in my startup folder it works except that it takes a long time for Slimserver to start, takes a lot of memory and I cannot get it to start minimized. I've tried playing around with running just Slim.exe but that does not work either. There must be a way to run SlimServer silently in the background without hogging lots of memory and not using a service... Any help would be very much apprechiated. Do the Slim/* perl modules provide an interface I can use for my own scripts? For example, I'd like to use the same code Slim uses for accessing track metadata (id3/vorbis tags). I'd like to use File::Find and recurse my music folder and use the Slim modules to gather the meta data. It would be helpful to have a small tool where I can pass a file name and see how slimserver parses and how it would index. I know I can turn on debugging and rescan, but I'd like to be able to work with single files. I'd also like to be able to do database queries directly on the database. Hi, a general question about the use of iTunes: could someone explain the difference between reloading the iTunes library and rescanning. What is happening in the background. The difference between the 2 is not clear to me and then I am not sure about the effect of the parameters that controls them. There is a reload iTunes library interval (default 60 sec) and a rescan library plugin the allows to schedule a rescan. If I turn the rescan scheduler on, do I still need to reload the iTunes library? There doesn't seem to be a way to schedule a reload of the itunes library or trigger it manually? Robert Rozman wrote: What I'm trying to know is HOW they synhonize ? Do they talk to each other, to server - timestamps, ... ? How is sync feature implemented in softsqueeze ? All the players communicate only with the server, using the slimproto protocol. This allows the server to detect the audio buffer status in each player, and start and stop the streams. When playing in sync the server sends the audio stream to the players, but they are paused and just buffer the data. Once all the players reach a buffer threshold the server sends a play message to each player, and they all start playback together. Again, this is something that we don't package... and I've absolutely no idea if anybody has ever even TRIED to make that work. Sorry if that's not the most helpful answer in the world. If there is an official list how do I find out what genre my album should be? As others have said, genre is at best a comment. And the history is a bit convoluted. For some, check out http://www.id3.org/ Most important, ID3 tags are really only applicable to MP3 files. Flag and Ogg get a similar function from a much more robustly specified set of metatags see http://flac.sourceforge.net/ The initial ID3 tags were invented by the folks at Winamp (or some other early MP3 player) and reflected two critical biases: first, the developers were young and liked rock and rock-like music and second: there was only room for 64 options. As a result, the initial WinAmp had about 40 genres, which had 30 or more selections of rock, grunge, techo, industrial, jungle, etc and only one classification for all of classical There have been revisions to the id3 format, with more types, and finally a free form field so you can enter what you want. As far as I have been able tell, there is no official standards body for ID3 tags (i.e. no IEEE or IETF, etc.). There are ID3 version 2 format specs, with two separate sub-versions that are only partially interoperable. See http://www.id3.org/id3v2.4.0-frames.txt for 2.4 and http://www.id3.org/id3v2.3.0.txt for 2.3 There are assorted notes about ID3 v 3 and even some claims of a version 4, but while I can have google point to people talking about these versions, I can't find any site that actually defines them. Having a single genre on a song is simplistic idea. It is too subjective to be generally useful. [slim] Problems with rescan using 3/19 nightly
I mentioned a few days ago that it seemed like rescan wasn't working for me, but I wanted to do some more testing. Now I'm seeing it again for sure with the 3/19 nightly (running on Windows XP with Fishbone). I just added several folders (each folder is an album containing well tagged MP3 or FLAC files) to my library folder and clicked the Rescan button on the Server Settings web page. Watching the log, I can see it zipping through the library -- tons of output that I'm looking at with tail. What I don't see is any mention of any of the several new folders that were added! All the other folders, the ones that have been there since I first installed the 3/19 nightly and cranked it up for the first time, are all mentioned, but no mention at all of the new ones. Now I'm wondering if maybe it has something to do with my setup. I tell Slimserver that my library path is: F:\MP3\Squeezebox\Library That folder contains a single Windows shortcut called New.lnk which in turn points to: F:\MP3\New That's where all my albums are, each organized in a separate folder. If I do a wipe cache or otherwise completely blow away the database, all albums and tracks are correctly found. But otherwise a normal rescan doesn't seem to pick up new ones. Very odd. Very. I wish I could figure out how to proceed here. Well, here's one thing. The rescan has definitely stopped. Nothing's been written to the log file in a while; the UI doesn't show the still rescanning message. I now do a Browse Artists in Fishbone and then click on S (I added a Swing Out Sister album last night; that's one of the ones that hasn't shown up in the log file). I got a blank document back from the server (Firefox reports the error: Document contains no data) and this in the log file: Modification of non-creatable array value attempted, subscript -75 at /PerlApp/Slim/Web/Pages.pm line 2058. That's something I've never seen or had happen before. Quite a coincidence that it would happen just now after this unsuccessful rescan, but I suppose it could just be a coincidence. So I killed and restarted the Slimserver just now. Still doesn't pick up the new folders/albums. And if I click on that S, I get the same perl error in the log file and a Document contains no data error. OK, let's try Wipe Cache. And *now* I'm seeing signs of progress in the log file. Here's one difference: when I just click rescan I see no evidence anywhere of the Slimserver decoding the New.lnk shortcut, seeing that it's a directory, then traversing the directory trying to find new folders. Instead I see it hitting all the folders and files it already knows about (sorry for the line wrapping, I can't figure out how to disable it): 2005-03-22 22:04:48.8104 pushing button mode: OFF.datetime 2005-03-22 22:04:48.8321 Got /F:/MP3/Squeezebox/Library from file url file:///F:/MP3/Squeezebox/Library 2005-03-22 22:04:48.8492 extracted: F:\MP3\Squeezebox\Library from file:///F:/MP3/Squeezebox/Library 2005-03-22 22:04:48.8706 Got /F:/MP3/Squeezebox/Library/New.lnk from file url file:///F:/MP3/Squeezebox/Library/New.lnk 2005-03-22 22:04:48.8711 extracted: F:\MP3\Squeezebox\Library\New.lnk from file:///F:/MP3/Squeezebox/Library/New.lnk 2005-03-22 22:04:48.8783 Got /F:/MP3/New/'N%20Sync%20-%20Celebrity%20(2001) from file url file:///F:/MP3/New/'N%20Sync%20-%20Celebrity%20(2001) 2005-03-22 22:04:48.8788 extracted: F:\MP3\New\'N Sync - Celebrity (2001) from file:///F:/MP3/New/'N%20Sync%20-%20Celebrity%20(2001) See how it goes right from New.lnk to hitting the first folder it already knows about? Having a single genre on a song is simplistic idea. It is too subjective to be generally useful. One of the reasons driving the SlimServer 6.* effort is to allow more generalized data structure so you can call a song rock and 'classic and head banging all at once. This capability is already available in slimserver (and has been for a long time). Simply list all the genres you wish using a standard delimiter to separate them. For example, if you want to use a semicolon as a delimiter then classical; romantic would assign a song to both the classical and romantic genres.
