[slim] New How-To: Installing SlimServer on LinkStation

2005-03-22 Thread Rod Tucker

Marc,

I am really grateful that someone has put all this
information down in one place. It gave me confidence, at last, to go ahead
and try installing the slimserver on my linkstation.

Everything seemed to be going just fine, but I ran
into a problemright at the last step(under "testing and finishing")
.

I typed in: mnt/slimserver# ./slimserver.pl
--daemon --prefsfile /mnt/slim-data/slimserver.pref --cachedir /mnt/slim-data, as you
suggested,

butthe following response came
up:

Welcome to the Slim Devices perl
module installer.

These packages are needed for
SlimServer 6 to function.
You will need a C compiler (gcc),
make, and perl installed.

*** Ignore any warnings about
AppConfig. ***

Please enter a perl binary to use
(defaults to /usr/bin/perl)
This must be the same perl binary
that you ran this program with --

=

As you
can see, I tried running "mnt/slimserver#
/mnt/slimserver/Bin/build-perl-modules.pl" as suggested by the
program.

I tried
typing in "slimserver.pl" when it asked for the perl binary, but this didn't
work. I don't think I have a C compiler on my computer, and I
don't know that the modules DBD::SQLite XML::Parser HTML::Parser
Compress::Zlib are.

Any
suggestions?

Rod
Tucker

BTW, when I copied perl and the
slimserver to the relevant directories, both files had a .tar.tar suffix rather
than the .tar.gz suffix as listed in your notes. However "tar xzvf
filename.tar.tar" (rather than "tar xzvf filename.tar.gz") seemed to work
OK.

Richard,

I'm afraid you're under a multiple misunderstanding. I'm not selling
anything at £129 (or any other price - I'm a customer, not a retailer);
Stuart is selling something for £129, but it's not a squeezebox, it's a DAB
USB radio.

As for your question - someone else might be able to answer it better. I've
recently become the happy owner of two Squeezeboxes, but I've never seen a
Roku in the flesh, still less used or heard one.

As I understand it, the basic Roku is very similar architecturally to the
original Squeezebox (whereas the new Squeezebox2 has some enhancements).
There's also a version with a much bigger display, for a lot more cash. On
software, the SlimDevices boxes will I guess always benefit first from
enhancements to SlimServer - but because Slim release the software under a
GPL OpenSource agreement, Roku are able to use it for their customers also.
OTOH, if you buy 'protected' music from the iTunes music store, the Roku
should be able to play these directly, whereas SlimServer currently has to
go through contortions. (Again - all this is my understanding - I've never
used Roku, and I won't buy music from iTMS.)

I can say that in my direct experience, supported by many comments I've seen
from others, SlimDevices offer exceptional customer service.

Hope this helps,

Ben

 Ben,

Hopefully you can help me! I want to know whether to splash the cash and get
the Roku M1000 or go for the SqueezeBox. I am running Win Xp SP2 and at
present do not have a wireless setup and would probably just go for the
 ethernet connection at the moment.

Seeing as though you're retailing the Squeezebox at £129 this week, would you
recommend this over the £50 more expensive Roku?

 Thanks in advance,

If you go to your link
http://merciafm.musicradio.com/homepage.jsp
using your webbrowser, there's a link called Listen Live. Now this
is a javascript link which looks like this:

javascript:popup('http://audio.musicradio.com/player.asp?show=50',%20'audio',%20'468',%20'207')

Without examining that further, it probably pops up a new window and
loads the page with url:
http://audio.musicradio.com/player.asp?show=50
in the new window.

try entering
http://audio.musicradio.com/player.asp?show=50
in the webbrowser, I got the option to save the file to disk (I use
Firefox, dunno if that matters).

The file looks like this:

ASX VERSION = 3.0
TITLEMercia FM Live/TITLE
ENTRY
TITLEMercia FM Live/TITLE
COPYRIGHTGWR Group/COPYRIGHT
AUTHORMercia FM/AUTHOR
REF HREF=mms://audio1.musicradio.com/merciafm /
REF HREF=mms://audio2.musicradio.com/merciafm /
/ENTRY

/ASX

and there are your links!

It would probably be easier to start plaing the stream in windows
media player, winamp or itunes and just look at the stream properties.

Re: [slim] Linux command-line tagger

I don't remember the exact command, but something like id3v2 -l 11_*.flac came back:
11_Frogs.flac
No tags found
Or something like that. Most of these files (they're all flac) were ripped/tagged with dbPowerAMP and slimserver seems to be able to pull them out. So i just figured this tool (id3v2) was having issues reading them.

id3v2 works perfectly for me - what do you mean by not reading the

It does for me - were your mp3's tagged with ape? I don't believe it
understands ape tags - but it should work fine with existing ID3V1 or
ID3V2 tags.

What would be involved in making the buttons for a given skin (slim or

Re: [slim] 6.0b3 03-22 nightly - the count is correct

2005-03-22 Thread Michel Fombellida
Hi,

I found that I have 2 albums with the same name (Live), iTunes counts them as
1 album whereas Slimserver correctly counts them as 2... so actually slimserver
is now correct and iTunes is wrong. Well done!!!

As far as I am concerned there is still one issue on the Squeezebox itself. If
you do Browse Music-Browse Genres-select one genre- then instead of seing
a list of Artists in this genre I actually see a list of Artists AND Composers!
Note the server setting is Don't include composer, band and orchestra in
artists. I also mentionned it in my bug report 1133 but I now release that I
should have opened a separate bug report. Should I open a separate bug report?

2005-03-22 Thread Chris Laplante
Indeed,

However at least for me, the buttons are even smaller than the others.
Also it seems pretty plain (no insult at all do whomever did the
skin). It would look much nicer to have the excession or slim skin. I
have tried all of the skins, at 800x600 they can be used with some
care, but seeing this is the only thing I am going to run on these
machines there is no reason not to take full advantage of the screen
real estate.

Thanks,

I disagree. I see no reason for a swap partition when you already have
far more physical RAM than most swap partitions used to be, and tasks
never fail because of memory exhaustion.

While this makes perfect sense in theory, the linux kernel (among
others) is written with the expectation of having a swap space, and it
makes decisions about scheduling, caching and memory management based
on that assumption. If you really want to run it without a swap space
and maintain performance, you need to tweak the kernel settings a bit.
Start with a google on swappiness and go from there.

Hi John

Go to Server Settings...Formatting and scroll down to Title Format.
Add this one and select it:

DISC-TRACKNUM. TITLE (ARTIST)

Then, in Player Settings (main page) change the Title Format and you
should see the new one in the drop down.

Works a treat for me.

Dont see any option for this. Nearest thing is show year with album. Any
chance of doing htis with artist as well?

Are you thinking about the 'title options' which is only for the showing
the details of a particular song (e.g. in now playing) rather than in

Or for the player itself: Player Settings - Display

Doesnt seem any helpful options here.

You need to create the format in the server settings (this will affect
the browser although you don't have to select the new format) and then
you can select it from the player settings. This will only affect the
particular player.

Also the 'show year with albums' only affects the web ui, it makes no

RE: [slim] More flac playback over wireless data

2005-03-22 Thread Simon @ Home
file server, slimserver and Squeezebox are all independantly and
  wirelessly connected to my adsl/router/firewall/hub.

OUCH!!! this isn't going to work. If your slimserver is
mounting its music folder from another (also wireless)
machine, this means your data is hitting the airwaves a total
of FOUR times ie 6 Mbps total bandwidth usage!
file server - access point - slim server - access point -
 squeezebox
You need to get those computers on ethernet with the access
point. Then the only traffic on wireless is:
 access point - squeezebox

Thanks Sean.
I am aware of that, but I currently live in listed building (called The
Hobbits Rest) which I do not own. The only phone point is in the lounge
(very near the Squeezebox) so I am a bit stuck. However, I am actually
surprised at how infrequent the drop outs are with this set up. For now I
have gone back to MP3s and radio (which appear to work fine). I'll leave the
flacs till I buy a house high enough for me to stand up in (hopefully before
I develop a permananent stoop).

[slim] Starting slimserver in Windows

2005-03-22 Thread Manuel Rathmann

Hi there,

I'm running Slimserver 5.4.1 for Windows. Upgrading to the latest version 6
completely
screwed my system so I'm back with the old one. I am using Itunes to keep my
music organized
and therefore would like to run the Itunes plugin as well which updates my
ratings etc.

Everything is working fine except that I have not found a clever way of
starting slimserver.
I used to run it as a service but I want to use the direct update
functionality of the Itunes
plugin - for that it must not run as a service.

When I simply put SlimServer.exe in my startup folder it works except that
it takes a long
time for Slimserver to start, takes a lot of memory and I cannot get it to
start minimized.

I've tried playing around with running just Slim.exe but that does not work
either. There
must be a way to run SlimServer silently in the background without hogging
lots of memory
and not using a service...

Any help would be very much apprechiated.

Cheers,
Manuel

[slim] Debugging missing titles from database

2005-03-22 Thread Bill Moseley
I'm running CVS from yesterday.

Trying to understand why the database show the counts I'm expecting:

$ fgrep audiodir ~/.slimserver.pref
audiodir = /home/moseley/music

$ find /home/moseley/music -name \*.mp3 -o -name \*.ogg -o -name \*.flac  -type
f | wc -l
2257

$ telnet localhost 9090
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
info total songs ?
info total songs 1056 - why not 2257?
info total artists ?
info total artists 321

What steps should I take to see the difference?

Do the Slim/* perl modules provide an interface I can use for my own
scripts?

For example, I'd like to use the same code Slim uses for accessing
track metadata (id3/vorbis tags). I'd like to use File::Find and
recurse my music folder and use the Slim modules to gather the meta
data. It would be helpful to have a small tool where I can pass a
file name and see how slimserver parses and how it would index. I
know I can turn on debugging and rescan, but I'd like to be able to
work with single files.

I'd also like to be able to do database queries directly on the
database. Then I could compare with the database and see what files
are not indexed. Any example scripts for this?

Thanks,

[slim] iTunes reload library vs rescan library

2005-03-22 Thread Michel Fombellida
Hi,

a general question about the use of iTunes: could someone explain the
difference between reloading the iTunes library and rescanning. What is
happening in the background.

The difference between the 2 is not clear to me and then I am not sure about
the effect of the parameters that controls them.

There is a reload iTunes library interval (default 60 sec) and a rescan library
plugin the allows to schedule a rescan. If I turn the rescan scheduler on, do I
still need to reload the iTunes library? There doesn't seem to be a way to
schedule a reload of the itunes library or trigger it manually?

Thanks in advance,

I've used the log file in the past. Start the server with the --log
option and then do a full rescan. It will list every track it finds. You
can then do your own find, massage both the log file and the find output
a bit, and do a diff. Not a perfect solution, but still quite useful.

I'd also like to be able to do database queries directly on the

Funny, I was just thinking of putting one together -- I just this
afternoon grabbed a copy of the schema from svn.slimdevices.com (I only
saw a PNG file -- is there something in plain text format somewhere?). I
still have to write some perl code to read from the SQLite tables.

Basically I just wanted something to dump what's in the database to a
flat file for easier inspection.

(Having said that, the last time I checked, the server had picked up all
my tracks and albums correctly, at least as compared with the output of
a find command.)

would like to make them fat-finger friendly.
Thanks,

You can edit the existing softsqueeze skins without too much difficulty.
In brief:

1) The java .jar file format is the same as a zip file, so rename
SoftSqueeze.jar to SoftSqueeze.zip and unzip the file.
2) You will find a 'skin' folder in the zip file. This contains all the
png images and xml definition files for the skins. You can then use an
image editor to alter the images, and a text editor to edit the xml
files. The xml is used to bind a button to an action, and to adjust
where the button appears in the window. I think it should be reasonably
easy to follow.
3) In the META-INF folder delete the SOFTSQUE.RSA and SOFTSQUE.SF files.
These files are digital signatures to make sure the .jar file is not
tampered with. As you are tampering with the jar file you need to delete
them otherwise Java won't start Softsqueeze. Keep the MANIFEST.MF file.
4) Zip the files backup, and rename to SoftSqueeze.jar. A useful check
is to unzip the jar file again to make sure the paths are correct.
5) Send me the modified skin to include with Softsqueeze :)

Feel free to ask more questions if needed.

Richard

Does this get better if you reduce the volume in Softsqueeze and crank

Could you post the Softsqueeze debug with 'player' and 'javasound' debug

 that ITunes

 Composer

this is one of the problem I reported in bug 1133 and in a message below:

...there is still one issue on the Squeezebox itself. If you do Browse Music-
Browse Genres-select one genre- then instead of seing a list of Artists in
this genre I actually see a list of Artists AND Composers! Note the server

With the latest nightly of 6.0 this behaviour is now only in Browse by genres

 Richard

 Hi kdf,

thanks, if the database rescans all its sources on regular basis (with 6.0)

it cleans up stale data, looks for new files on browse, but if you change your
itunes data from the itunes application, you will still want the reload to be
happening. However, if you are not impatient, you can always set the reload
interval to a long duration.

Will you also get rid of the rescan plugin if it is not needed anymore.
 Having

that's not really up to me. I've never actually felt there was a need for it.

All the players communicate only with the server, using the slimproto
protocol. This allows the server to detect the audio buffer status in
each player, and start and stop the streams. When playing in sync the
server sends the audio stream to the players, but they are paused and
just buffer the data. Once all the players reach a buffer threshold the
server sends a play message to each player, and they all start playback
together. This process repeats at the start of each track, to keep the
players in sync. Softsqueeze emulates the squeezebox, including the
appropriate buffer sizes, and protocols etc.

Well not true. Someone has tried using four instances of Softsqueeze's

partially successful, the Softsqueeze players were recognized as
individual players by the slimserver and correctly played separate
streams over the appropriate audio card. Sync did not work correctly,
and we never finished debugging this before the audio cards had to be
returned.

and c) it's so simple to try, no one understands why you haven't tried

Yes, it is. Try this: write down the names of the audio mixers you want
to use from the softsqueeze preferences. The start softsqueeze from the
command prompt using:

java -Dmacaddress=11:11:11:11:11:11 -Daudio.mixer='Primary Sound Driver'
-jar SoftSqueeze.jar

Change the mac address to whatever you need, and the audio mixer as
appropriate. This will override the stored preferences and creates
additional independent Softsqueeze players on the same PC.

Yes, if you could work from the slimserver trunk that would be good. You
need to be working from Softsqueeze 2.0a15, from last nights nightly or
using svn.

If you have the Java JDK and Apache ant installed then it is easier to
compile Softsqueeze from source instead of unzipping/zipping the jar

As others have said, genre is at best a comment.

And the history is a bit convoluted. For some, check
out http://www.id3.org/ Most important, ID3 tags are really
only applicable to MP3 files. Flag and Ogg get a similar
function from a much more robustly specified set of metatags
see http://flac.sourceforge.net/

The initial ID3 tags were invented by the folks at Winamp
(or some other early MP3 player) and reflected two critical
biases: first, the developers were young and liked rock and rock-like
music and second: there was only room for 64 options.
As a result, the initial WinAmp had about 40 genres, which
had 30 or more selections of rock, grunge, techo, industrial, jungle,
etc and only one classification for all of classical

There have been revisions to the id3 format, with more types, and
finally a free form field so you can enter what you want.

As far as I have been able tell, there is no official standards
body for ID3 tags (i.e. no IEEE or IETF, etc.). There are
ID3 version 2 format specs, with two separate sub-versions
that are only partially interoperable. See
http://www.id3.org/id3v2.4.0-frames.txt for 2.4 and
http://www.id3.org/id3v2.3.0.txt for 2.3
There are assorted notes about ID3 v 3 and even some claims of
a version 4, but while I can have google point to
people talking about these versions, I can't find any
site that actually defines them.

Having a single genre on a song is simplistic idea.
It is too subjective to be generally useful.
One of the reasons driving the SlimServer 6.*
effort is to allow more generalized data structure
so you can call a song rock and 'classic
and head banging all at once.

[slim] Problems with rescan using 3/19 nightly

2005-03-22 Thread Steve Baumgarten
I mentioned a few days ago that it seemed like rescan wasn't working for
me, but I wanted to do some more testing. Now I'm seeing it again for
sure with the 3/19 nightly (running on Windows XP with Fishbone).

I just added several folders (each folder is an album containing well
tagged MP3 or FLAC files) to my library folder and clicked the Rescan
button on the Server Settings web page.

Watching the log, I can see it zipping through the library -- tons of
output that I'm looking at with tail. What I don't see is any mention of
any of the several new folders that were added! All the other folders,
the ones that have been there since I first installed the 3/19 nightly
and cranked it up for the first time, are all mentioned, but no mention
at all of the new ones.

Now I'm wondering if maybe it has something to do with my setup. I tell
Slimserver that my library path is:

F:\MP3\Squeezebox\Library

That folder contains a single Windows shortcut called New.lnk which in
turn points to:

F:\MP3\New

That's where all my albums are, each organized in a separate folder.

If I do a wipe cache or otherwise completely blow away the database,
all albums and tracks are correctly found. But otherwise a normal rescan
doesn't seem to pick up new ones.

Very odd. Very. I wish I could figure out how to proceed here.

Well, here's one thing. The rescan has definitely stopped. Nothing's
been written to the log file in a while; the UI doesn't show the still
rescanning message. I now do a Browse Artists in Fishbone and then
click on S (I added a Swing Out Sister album last night; that's one
of the ones that hasn't shown up in the log file). I got a blank
document back from the server (Firefox reports the error: Document
contains no data) and this in the log file:

Modification of non-creatable array value attempted, subscript -75 at
/PerlApp/Slim/Web/Pages.pm line 2058.

That's something I've never seen or had happen before. Quite a
coincidence that it would happen just now after this unsuccessful
rescan, but I suppose it could just be a coincidence.

So I killed and restarted the Slimserver just now. Still doesn't pick up
the new folders/albums. And if I click on that S, I get the same perl
error in the log file and a Document contains no data error.

OK, let's try Wipe Cache.

And *now* I'm seeing signs of progress in the log file. Here's one
difference: when I just click rescan I see no evidence anywhere of the
Slimserver decoding the New.lnk shortcut, seeing that it's a
directory, then traversing the directory trying to find new folders.
Instead I see it hitting all the folders and files it already knows
about (sorry for the line wrapping, I can't figure out how to disable it):

Subject: [slim] Drive letter of playlist

Is there any simple way of changing the drive letter of songs in a
playlist en masse. I reformatted my hard drive and the new set up
renamed the drives differently and now my playlists won't work.

Re: [slim] SB2 forgot it was wireless

2005-03-22 Thread Sean Adams

If the unit has been bumped around a bit, it may be that the wireless
module inside has been disconnected. This would make it behave like a
wired squeezebox.

Also I don't think it's a squeezebox2 - those are not shipping out for
a couple more days.

It doesn't talk about the wireless network anymore, like it used to do
when it
was working.

I went into the current settings, and it only shows me the MAC address
for the
wired interface, not the MAC address for the wireless. Could it be
that my
SB 2 has forgotten that it is wireless?

[slim] Non Roman charaters. How?

2005-03-22 Thread Avi Schwartz
Ripped some tracks from an Israeli CD. Tagged the tracks in Hebrew.
The slimserver 6.x web interface correctly shows the Hebrew text. The
squeeze box however shows a bunch of question marks instead. I thought
that version 6 was supposed to allow the display of UTF-8 characters.
Am I wrong?

yeah, you are right. I am talking about the thing which has an antenna
sticking out the back. Will crack it open and check to see what's what
inside.

Re: [slim] Genres

2005-03-22 Thread Aaron Zinck
Having a single genre on a song is simplistic idea.
It is too subjective to be generally useful.
One of the reasons driving the SlimServer 6.*
effort is to allow more generalized data structure
so you can call a song rock and 'classic
and head banging all at once.

This capability is already available in slimserver (and has been for a long
time). Simply list all the genres you wish using a standard delimiter to
separate them. For example, if you want to use a semicolon as a delimiter
then classical; romantic would assign a song to both the classical and
romantic genres. Then just define the delimiter character in Slimserver
under Server Settings - Behavior.

[slim] Tagging Classical Music

2005-03-22 Thread Michael Peters
I just bought a flac album from Magnatune -
Elizabeth Wolff - Moments Musicaux

Here is what the file listing looks like (magnatune had spaces which I
replaced with _ as I can't stand spaces in a file name):

01-Sergei_Rachmaninoff_-_6_Moments_Musicaux_Op._16_-_Andantino-Elizabeth_Wolff.flac
02-Sergei_Rachmaninoff_-_6_Moments_Musicaux_Op._16_-_Allegretto-Elizabeth_Wolff.flac
03-Sergei_Rachmaninoff_-_6_Moments_Musicaux_Op._16_-_Andante_cantabile-Elizabeth_Wolff.flac
04-Sergei_Rachmaninoff_-_6_Moments_Musicaux_Op._16_-_Presto-Elizabeth_Wolff.flac
05-Sergei_Rachmaninoff_-_6_Moments_Musicaux_Op._16_-_Adagio_sostenuto-Elizabeth_Wolff.flac
06-Sergei_Rachmaninoff_-_6_Moments_Musicaux_Op._16_-_Maestoso-Elizabeth_Wolff.flac
07-Moritz_Moszkowski_-_3_Moments_Musicaux_Op._7_-_Allegramente-Elizabeth_Wolff.flac
08-Moritz_Moszkowski_-_3_Moments_Musicaux_Op._7_-_Con_moto-Elizabeth_Wolff.flac
09-Moritz_Moszkowski_-_3_Moments_Musicaux_Op._7_-_Tranquillo_e_semplice-Elizabeth_Wolff.flac
10-Moritz_Moszkowski_-_4_Moments_Musicaux_Op._84_-_Con_moto-Elizabeth_Wolff.flac
11-Moritz_Moszkowski_-_4_Moments_Musicaux_Op._84_-_Moderato_e_grazioso-Elizabeth_Wolff.flac
12-Moritz_Moszkowski_-_4_Moments_Musicaux_Op._84_-_Maestoso-Elizabeth_Wolff.flac
13-Moritz_Moszkowski_-_4_Moments_Musicaux_Op._84_-_Animato_ma_non_troppo-Elizabeth_Wolff.flac

1-6 all have the same title set in the title field (Sergei
Rachmaninoff - 6 Moments)
7-9 all have the same title set in the title field (Moritz Moszkowski
- 3 Moments)
10-13 all have the same title set in the title field (Moritz
Moszkowski - 4 Moments)

Other than the track numbers of the sets being different, from the
sets there is no way to tell the tracks apart via the tags. The track
names however contain information not in the vorbis comments.

What would be the proper vorbis comment field to add to contain the
additional data?

Avi - although we support UTF-8 throughout the server, we don't have all the
fonts (yet) for them on the player display.

Re: [slim] Debugging missing titles from database

It would be helpful to have a small tool where I can pass a
file name and see how slimserver parses and how it would index. I
know I can turn on debugging and rescan, but I'd like to be able to
 work with single files.

I've used the log file in the past. Start the server with the --log
option and then do a full rescan. It will list every track it finds. You
can then do your own find, massage both the log file and the find output
a bit, and do a diff. Not a perfect solution, but still quite useful.

I used the -d_scan option. First rescan got the same numbers -- but
then I deleted the .slimserversql.db and got numbers that just about
matched what find was saying.

I'd also like to be able to do database queries directly on the
database. Then I could compare with the database and see what files
are not indexed. Any example scripts for this?

Funny, I was just thinking of putting one together -- I just this
afternoon grabbed a copy of the schema from svn.slimdevices.com (I only
saw a PNG file -- is there something in plain text format somewhere?). I
still have to write some perl code to read from the SQLite tables.

Basically I just wanted something to dump what's in the database to a
 flat file for easier inspection.

That would be nice. I need to clean up a lot of tags, first. Any
plugins for editing tags in the web interface? Probably slower than
I'd like to work, but it would be nice for fixing things as the show
up in play lists.

I just searched for rain (those in the Bay Area can appreciated
that today) and had a handful of duplicates. It would be nice to be
able to flag those for testing and removal later on right from the
web interface. I suppose writing a playlist could work.
