I failed to explain that "SPL" stands for "Sound Pressure Level". 0dB
SPL is defined as a pressure change of 20uPa (microPascals), and is
generally accepted as the threshold of human hearing. (For reference,
normal atmospheric pressure is about 100 kiloPascals, so the quietest
noise a human can detect is one that varies ambient pressure by about
one part in 5 billion).

If you're referring to the volume scale on a Squeezebox, then it goes
up to 100, not 89. Each number represents 0.5dB, so when you're
listening at 70, that's 15dB below the Squeezebox's maximum output.

[slim] ADSL vs DSL

2008-08-27 Thread thekirbyfake

I'm considering a change to a cable internet from my phoneline internet
and the cable company (Virgin) tells me I'll get a DSL router as my
existing ADSL router won't work with cable.

Firstly will the SQB3 work with a DSL router? (I assume this is a
simple yes?)

Secondly I had to buy a stronger ADSL router because one of my units is
in a conservatory and the signal has to travel through an outside wall.
I'm assuming the standard DSL router they'll provide will be weak so can
I plug the ADSL router into the DSL router to get the internet radio
stations and keep the existing SQB wireless network via my old router?

Thanks

I think there is a little confusion here - when you say Virgin, I
assume you mean Virgin Media and you're in the UK?

Firstly, ADSL if a variant of DSL - as far as I understand it all
consumer DSL is ADSL.

At the moment you more than likely have ADSL with which you are using
an ADSL wireless router. This is a wireless router with an integrated
ADSL modem.

If you are changing to Virgin Media cable then they will supply you
with a cable modem so you'll need to buy a standard wireless router
that you will plug your cable modem into.

You will (almost certainly) not be able to plug the Virgin Media cable
modem into your ADSL wireless router.

If you are changing to cable then what the cable company said about
changing from an ADSL router to a DSL router is pretty much nonsense.

Once everything is set up SBs shoudld work with any router.

I hope that clears things up a little.

You -may- be able to use your existing ADSL wireless router as a
wireless range extender to the Virgin cable router (as mentioned, you
will certainly not be able to use your existing router in place of the
Virgin one). You should check the documentation for your router to see
if it supports such an option.

I'm not sure if he'll get a router from Virgin media - just a cable

Good point... but assuming it's wireless (I believe Virgin's are), the
range extender approach should still work if the existing router
supports it.

Since you already have an iPod check this out:

Vinnie modded my Photo iPod man what a difference it made. I use it
mainly in the car. Compared to stock it's night and day. It's also so
much better than my car CD player [Kenwood excelon with burr brown

is so much better. Read some reviews and decide if it's worth it to
you. If you are after better sound you can not go wrong. And Vinnie
does great work. Oh and I also run the Rockbox firmware :)

A more picture oriented and easy to read html or pdf document for

Re: [slim] portable sound quality?

2008-08-27 Thread gowger

Thanks m_l , a couple of surprises in there for me. First one is that
they have a wolfson DAC in the later generation ipods! Also I was
reminded there of the line out that's available through the proprietary
docking socket, which given the previous points might make a difference
to sound quality just by using that instead of the headphone socket.

That mod looks like something I'd definitely like to try. Even if
posting a working device off to someone on the internet to break it
open and modify it seems a little mad. :-)

Damn, it looks like Vinnie charges $250 for the mod! Ok so I was given
this machine, but that's not far off the original price back when the
apple marketing machine was peaking. Or is that the price for a
ordering a modded ipod, it's not that clear from the site. I'll ask him
and post the response.

I mean what are we talking inside the box, a couple of capacitors?

When you plug it into other devices, like your car, are you using the
dock connector line out or the headphone jack. Big difference. You
can get connector cables that have the dock on one side and mini phone
plug on the other. 10-12 bucks and they make a world of difference
bypassing the headphone jack. You won't have volume control so you
have to plug into something that does. I first discovered this with my
rockboxed Nano. I almost bought a headphone amp just so I could go out
of the line out for headphones too. I bought some Westone headphones
instead. They are the most comfortable in the ear I've ever worn. I
can sleep with them in and not notice. The sound quality is up there
with the best. You might want to look into them too. I use the UM2
dual driver version. Maybe next year for the amp.

My 2 cents: when you go portable you are going to be dealing with
background noise and hotel rooms with portable speakers. So don't try
to achieve "listening room" quality. My advice is to rip to high bit
rate OGG (or batch convert from FLAC), then buy the Koss Porta Pro for
head phones with good bass. I use a Tivoli Songbook unit for hotel
rooms and am happy with that.

There are certainly stray tags there, whether you can see them or not.
SqueezeCenter does have any tag writing capability (indeed it can't
change your music files at all). The won't be any SqueezeCenter bugs
concerning tags in the way you mention (these simple bugs were ironed
out years ago, if indeed there were any to begin with!).

Get a tagger that will definitely remove *all* tags and start from
scratch.

I use MP3Tag and when I've had a similar problem, as long as I've set
the program to remove all possible flavours of tags (via
settings/preferences), it works a treat.

Re: [slim] Anyone used Songbird?

2008-08-27 Thread maggior

Softsqueeze worked well for me, but I haven't used it in a while. It is
pretty heavy weight being a Java app. I just found it easier to
navigate my library using the web UI rather than clicking on the remote
buttons with a mouse. The UI in SQ would sometimes get sluggish and
occasionally hang on my machine.

The successor to softsqueeze (squeezeplay) will be coming in 7.3, so I
think Softsqueeze has essentially been End of Lifed. I don't think
there have been any fixes made in it in a while. This may account for
the instability that you see.

Re: [slim] art problem - ghost cover.jpg's

2008-08-27 Thread ctbarker32

Well, I continue to work through this. I find that if I touch the album
files (flac) using Mediamonkey (my preferred album management tool) it
forces SC 7.1 to re-look at the directory and to add the correct album
art. Also, I have come to realize that internally SC 7.1 seems to
convert all album art names to "cover.jpg" independent to what the
actual names are which in my case are all "Album Art.jpg"?

So doing it the hard and long way I'll eventually get SC 7.1 to
recognize all of my art!

Well, I can't say with 100% certainty. You could be right. But I was

Remember that 0dB doesn't mean "nothing" in an absolute sense. It's
just a reference point on a logarithmic scale.

Unless things have changed, you'll just get a cable modem. You'll have
to buy your own router.

I've been on cable broadband (NTL, now Virgin) for several years and as
a general rule it's pretty reliable. But unless you have a specific
problem with your ADSL, I have to ask why you are thinking of changing.
Quality of service from Virgin varies according to your geographic
location. I'm supposedly on a 10Mb conection, but I've never seen
download speeds higher than about 7Mb - it's usually around the 5-6
mark. And I am led to believe that I'm in a fairly good area!

Also, cable is even more asymmetric than ADSL: the technology simply
isn't well suited to high upload rates. Upstream on Virgin 10MB is just
512kb (typically about 400kb in practice), so if you want to do a lot of
uploading, think about that.

That's very interesting. Krefel is one of the larger chains here in
Belgium. That brochure just looks like their regular brochure. In fact,
I got a bunch of paper spam in the mailbox yesterday so it may very well
be in it. Will check when I'm at home.
If that's the case, then a) this really looks like it's for real, b)
it's surely very surprising that Logitech has not done any official

BTW, the text translates to "This product is currently not available in

PS: actually Fuzzball76 seems to be from Belgium too and confirmed that
a hardcopy of that brochure has been distributed in Belgium!

It is indeed Vrigin Media and the reason to change is if we move TV
services, phoneline, broadband and mobiles over we'll save £70/mth.

The chap I spoke to today said they provide the cable modem and a
wireless router which is plugged into the modem. He then said it's a
DSL router as opposed to an ADSL router.

As per the original post my ADSL router is a powerful one and I'm
assuming the free Virgin one won't be.

If that's the case then my plan is to go cable > cable modem > DSL
router

Then NAS > ADSL router > SQB

But can I use the DSL router as the "internet connection" for the ADSL
router to get internet radio?

PS thanks for the tips on STM and upload speeds. I'm not a heavy user
so that's adequate for me.

Re: [slim] ADSL vs DSL

2008-08-27 Thread maggior

I actually perfer separate devices. My experience has been that the
"all in one" devices (modem, router, wireless access point) aren't very
flexible. For my DSL service, I actually had to pay a little more to
get just a modem rather than what they call an "internet gateway".
This allowed me to use a Linksys WRT54GS, which I can load custom
firmware on and easily upgrade the antennas.

Cable modems and DSL modems are entirely different technologies. I
don't know why the person you spoke with would tell you that your cable
internet service would use DSL.

With separate devices (modem and router/wireless access point), you
will have the flexability to buy a wireless router that will suit your
wireless range needs. With an all-in-one device, you are stuck with
what the phone company or cable company make available.

Thanks for the heads-up on this wiki. I discovered some of these on my

press one of the volume buttons.

It's too bad that this information is not included in the manual for

I will be provided with separate a cable modem and DSL router. I don't
want an all-in-one cable/router.

I can go and buy a stronger DSL router but I already have a fairly

My question is how will I get internet connectivity for the SQB?

I'm with you Pat. A couple of years ago, I spent a few days pulling
more than 1000 feet of Cat5e throughout my home, for two Ethernet
cables to each room, including bedrooms, living room, kitchen, dining
room, and den. One of the Cat5 cables pipes audio from my living room
to my kitchen, via audio baluns. I've got three SB3's, and with wired
connections I never have to worry about interference or bandwidth
issues. I also have WiFi in the home, but I only use that for portable
devices, such as a Nokia N800 internet tablet.

There are limits to the number of switches in line of an Ethernet
connection. You can't just daisey chain switch into switch into switch
forever.

In my house, the broadband comes into a firewall/nat and then to a
switch, which talks to home runs of CAT5 to each location. So there is
already a switch between my Transporter and a router. One more is
allowed by the spec, but I think that's the limit.

Wire is nearly free, its the labor to pull it that costs big bucks.

I've pulled nearly 1600 linear feet of Cat5 cable in my house, and its
only a 2000 sqft center hall colonial.

A DSL router is used with DSL service. DSL is not provided by a cable
company. I believe what you refer to as a DSL router is just a generic
router.

There is some confusion of terms here. Unless in the UK a generic
router is referred to as a DSL router.

With your current setup with your "ADSL router" - is it an all-in-one
unit or is it connected to a separate modem? If it is 2 separate
units, then I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use it with your
cable modem when you get it.

Just to follow up on this; I've now changed "SqueezeCenter settings >

I've done loads of clear and rescans since my previous post, and indeed

Any thoughts on how to fix?

Realistically, in a house setup, adding a peripheral switch in every
room, you'd end up with a maximum of 3. That shouldn't be any problem.
BTW, aren't you talking about hubs? If not, what is the maximum of
switches in 'line'?

I have thick concrete walls in a 4 story house. I'm extremely lucky they
already pulled cat5 for the phones so I can use that. Pulling new
connections is almost impossible. I've got an extra switch in my study.
Of course, my main gigabit switch is plugged into my home router which
has a 5 port switch built in already. So that's three in line for the
stuff in the study. No problems yet.

[slim] New SC 7.1 and Duet update problems with remove from playlist

2008-08-27 Thread allanweinman

Hi,

I updated my squeezecenter to 7.1 last week, and then when I took my
duet controller out of its charging cradle it also downloaded and
updated itself. Anyway, ever since then I cannot remove the last entry
from the playlist any kind of internet radio or anything that streams.
I know I used to do this as it seemed to be the only way to stop it
from playing besides pressing pause or turning the squeezebox off.

Anyone else notice this new problem?

try www.themacgroup.ca, it is $399:

Re: [slim] Logitech Squeezebox Boom?

2008-08-27 Thread fuzzball76

Guys,

it was in the real paper mail Krefel Brochure this week.
It was on wifisound.nl weeks ago, and Logitech asked me to keep a bit
silent about it, which I did.
the user manual was on slimdevices.com early august as well

So there is no doubt it is real.

So we're just waiting for an exact release date (And price for the
US?)

Well, the Wiki lists today (the 27th) as the tentative release date for
7.2, with it's "secret bonus feature".

Googling will get you a couple companies which are listing prices
around $300, although none list a release date.

Please be soon, the anticipation is killing me. Ok, maybe not killing
me, but I do want one for my bedroom. And maybe the laundry room. And

2008-08-27 Thread 99-dk

Hi,

Got a smalle problem
After updating my ReadyNAS Duo with the nightly build
SqueezeCenter_7.1.1~22908.bin, I was'nt able to connect to
Squeezecenter anymore. (IP 10.0.0.xxx:9000)
I downloaded a in file called CleanSlimServer_0.1.bin updated the NAS
again, then again with the SqueezeCenter_7.1.1~22908.bin... still same
result.
Since it did'nt work I just went ahead an uploaded the
SqueezeCenter_7.0.1.bin, hoping it would help but it did'nt. I've
rebooted the ReadyNAS every time
What am I doing wrong? and how can I get connected again?

Thx. for any help.

Worth a try. Right? I disabled the WEP and tried to connect.
Interesting effect: after re entering the SSID so I could set up a no
encryption connection it would not connect to the wireless network at
all.

Then I re enabled WEP (original setup), and not only did it connect,
but obtained an ip address from the router. WHOA Nelly, that was weird.
Moved it back to the original location and it worked perfectly.

Any insight into this strange behavior? Or should I just enjoy the fact
that its working again?

In any case thanks much for the hints.

I have same settings apart from 10 sec delay. I have set it to max, but
no difference.

Something is weird here, made a software update just to be sure. I was
mistaken; the controller was/is only on r2097. The software upgrade
does download, verify and restarts but stays on r2097.

Don't know if this has anything to do with the original problem. I'll
see if I can wipe the controller and start all over with a fresh
firmware (if that is possible at all).

Re: [slim] Squeezecenter won't start anymore

2008-08-27 Thread r3w2000

Found this thread after experiencing the same problem yesterday.
Apparently "MySQL" was corrupted. I uninstalled 7.01 but the old MySQL
folder wasn't removed. When I tried installing 7.1 (using folder
Squeezecenter), the old MySQL folder still caused problems
(Squeezecenter wouldn't start). I re-installed 7.1 using a new
destination folder (e.g. Squeezecenter1) and it worked fine.

I can't remove the old folder no matter what I try.

I'm also using Vista on a Dell Inspiron.

Sunspots :) Seriously, going through those steps clears out all the
network settings which is sometimes useful if something somewhere got
out of whack. You mentioned entering the SSID, which implies SSID
broadcast is off on the router - that has been known to cause problems
with some devices.

Not automatically, you'd have to do it manually. I think there's an
enhancement request already open to have it switch between AP's based
on signal strength - it wouldn't be a bad idea to add the SBR to that.

Re: [slim] Fast forward/rewind on duet, with latest firmware and 7.1

2008-08-27 Thread Brian Ritchie

When the Song Position display appears, let go of the FF/RW button and
use the scroll wheel to change the track position. That's how it works
for me (using the vanilla 7.1 release). Considerably better than the
old 2-4-8x speedup, which I could never get to work properly.

I think I read the instructions either in the Release Notes for 7.1 or
in something that was linked from them. I wonder how many more UI
tricks I'm missing; must have a good rummage through the wiki again
sometime...

[slim] Linking different streams to multiple MP3 files

2008-08-27 Thread mrsean2k

Hi,

I'm using a combination of SqueezeCenter and the Alien BBC plugin to
allow me to listen to BBC Radio 7 in my Chumby.

As the Chumby currently lacks any way to select a specific stream on
SqueezeCenter, is it possible to set up SqueezeCenter to expose more
than one stream.mp3 URL, each of which is linked to a different
stream?

I guess I could get the same effect running multiple instances of
SqueezeCenter on different ports but that seems clumsy (not that this
request is elegant)

Thanks

Sean

Re: [slim] Controller: Doesn't stay on track!

2008-08-27 Thread Mnyb

You might as well go for a 7.2 beta, 7.2 is very soon to be released.
if you go 7.1 take the 7.1.1 the slightly bugfixed one

Btw don't worry if 7.1 or 7.2 crash at the first start after install,
just delete your cache folder and start again, it will then
automatically build a new database.

They made some changes in dB something ? that require a rescan,
somewhere in 7.1 beta ? this happens automatically in many cases, but
in some cases it crash.

By cache folder i mean SqueezeCenters cache folder. you can find its
location by going to settings in SC then status and scroll down a bit.

Yes if you are on fairly new version of SC and controller firmware I
would file a bug report.

The behavior you are describing looks like a bug to me, so your
probably not doing anything wrong.

If you have very old versions I would upgrade to 7.2 and then decide.
