@erland, @pippin, @mherger,

Any chance you can collaborate on adding Deezer HiFi functionality the
LMS Deezer app? In the current state Ickstream has support for HiFi but
some of the functionality available in LMS app is not available on
Ickstream, while the one major thing that is missing from the LMS app is
the HiFi support.

Thank You

Great and thanks for the response. Also with ickStream and Deezer, why
do none of thier preset radio stations play? Via mysqueezebox.com, they
play fine. They actually show up and you can browse them, but then when
selecting one, nothing plays. Thanks.

While this error shouldnt happen it is related to the ickStream player
implementation, through ickStream's own ickp2p protocol which works
independently of the Squeezebox architecture -
https://github.com/ickStream/ickstream-squeezebox-player - it would
allow to integrate some of the additional features available to the
ickstream players, but it is currently not used by the ickStream lms
plugin, so you can ignore it.

We are looking into stripping out some of the ickStream protocol code
out of the ickStream lms plugin to simplify development and updates, and
to avoid to have to debug these kind of errors.

The problem is not the domain as such. It's the protocol.
Old Squeezebox models only speak SlimProto which is a totally
non-scaleable, stateful, bi-directional protocol requiring a permanent
streaming connection.
It's totally fine in a local setup with just a few players because it's
very responsive but running it as an internet service is not exactly
ideal. This is probably also the reason for the occasional outages MySB
has been seeing in the past and it requires an expensive
infrastructure.

expect Spotify to work on a Transporter that way, for example. Plus:
Logitech would have to do that.

Should work, we haven't tested the ARM builds of the plugin on the Touch
but currently I don't really see a reason why it should break.
Since the Touch doesn't have a plugin installer you'd have to install it
manually through SSH, though.

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2015-09-07 Thread mvordeme

It isn't entirely impossible to modify the players' firmware to make
them connect to a different service. But that was more a strategical
thought, anyway. In case Logitech want to discontinue mysb, they'd
probably be happy to give away the domain.

What about the option to integrate ickStream into mysb, then,
technically?

I am aware that I may have to buy and operate my own mysb replacement
(and talk Mr. Harris into enhancing SvrPowerControl to make it switch
players between LMS instances instead of back to mysb) at some future
point in time, but I want to avoid having to look after yet another
piece of technology requiring updates, fixes, re-boots, ... for as long
as possible.

Doesn't the Touch come with a built-in LMS? Can it be used to make
ickStream available to my "old" players?

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2015-09-05 Thread pippin

The ickStream protocol and backend itself allows making of players and
controllers which only use the backend and no local server. Actually
it's pretty much designed for that and we have customers using it this
way.
This can potentially work with Touch and Radio, too, since you can
install Software on these devices.

For the older Squeezeboxes, including your Transporter, that's not an
option, though. They have very little memory and a proprietary firmware
that also needs a special development environment to develop for them at
all. They are hard-coded to work with MySB and you can't switch them to
something else (as backend, you can of course switch them to an instance
of LMS).

One option would be to run LMS on a cloud server for your Transporter
but that would not really save a lot compared to the local machine. A
server in a server farm, even a virtual machine, costs at least as much
and eats at least as many resources as a raspberry pi or something like
that which would make for a perfect LMS, too.

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2015-09-05 Thread mvordeme

I am aware that this thread is rather old, but it is the best match I
could find. I apologize if things I am going to write have been
discussed before, but I have been reading a lot already, and I don't
feel like reading another 31 pages right now.

I like the idea of having an intermediate service in order to create
synergies and make streaming music from multiple sources easier for
everyone. Unfortunately, the implementation comes at a time when
Logitech have almost stopped to develop their platform.

The reason why I am following the development of ickStream is that WiMP
keep pushing me towards TIDAL. Right now, this is not much of an option
for me. I am in a situation where I can stream the entire WiMP music
catalog without having to power up my LMS. If I had to run the machine
all day, the energy costs would almost sum up to the equivalent of my
WiMP subscription. This is why I am not so happy about the fact that
ickStream requires me to run an LMS. I know that there are plans for an
app that runs in the Touch or Radio, but Radio is not much more than an
alarm clock, and I have no plans of buying a Touch any time soon. My
main player is a Transporter, and considering the focus of ickStream on
lossless sources, it is a perfect match. The question is how the two
could be married.

I don't know much about mysb development, but I would think that if a
company wants to stop developing plug-ins for new music sources and save
maintenance costs, it would make absolute sense to integrate an
ickStream plug-in and leave any future developments to you guys. Any
problems which still exist in existing proprietary plug-ins would no
longer be of concern. The only plug-in still requiring maintenance would
be the new one. And if software development in the past has not gone
entirely crooked ways, the existing LMS plug-in should be a good
starting point for a mysb plug-in.

Alternatively, ickStream could provide your own mysb service, presumably
with no plug-ins but the ickStream plug-in. Maybe in anticipation of
mysb being terminated at some point in the future, this isn't such an
entirely absurd idea.

I don't know whether any of my ideas make sense commercially, but from
an environmental point of view, it would be an advantage to run one
central service instead of hundreds of LMSs running in individual
households. Just my two cents.

For me, this service would need to be less ambitious than the Logitech
one. When I started with the Squeezebox Touch, I used mysqueezebox.com
a fair bit as I used a music database on my PC and that wasn't always
switched on. Now, I'm using a Squeezeplug, the database is always on so
all I'm now concerned about is being able to get new players or servers
on to the network. I noted that when I installed LMS on the
Squeezeplug, it asked me for a Logitech/Squeezebox user ID and password,
so the system seems to need outside participation for me to add
hardware, even if this is homemade kit.

I don't know the details of the streaming code but the following thread
contains the debug information:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?100240-Unable-to-stream-a-url-any-ideas
After discussing with Michael I understood that Logitech also struggled
with this and decided that AAC wasn't suitable for streaming and they
also had specific problems with the WiMP format as I understood it.

We are happy to switch to support AAC if someone who understands the
LMS/Squeezebox streaming code can make it work with the AAC streams
provided by WiMP, but we don't have the time and resources to
investigate this in more detail right now ourselves. The situation could
of course be different in the future. The WiMP AAC streams works with
VLC and similar software, so at least parts of the problems are related
to LMS and Squeezebox streaming code.

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2014-11-01 Thread CommanderROR

@pippin

I'm not adverse to paying for a service, it's just a matter of what I
pay for. If I use Deezer, then I pay for Deezer. If somebody creates a
plugin for the Squeezebox/LMS then I'd gladly pay for that as well. Same
goes for other services. I'm just not sure that creating a new platform
service is going to be viable, let alone profitable.
Sonos and similar companies sell Hardware, and they have their specific
apps and plugins for that hardware.
Your service is more interesting for the DIY crowd I think, which is
great, but for a Service that has running costs (Server, Developers,
License fees etc.) you'd need a large userbase and regular cash-flow
which might be hard to achieve without dedicated Hardware
Players/Servers that can be found on Amazon/MediaMarkt and so on.

But I hope it will work out for you (and in extension all of us here)
because it will help keep the great LMS system alive. And with
Squeezelite and Raspberry Pi + Hifiberry DAC/Digi/Amp this system is
actually a lot better-sounding than any Sonos I've ever tried, if a bit
harder to set up... ;)

For now it will be free for Squeezebox users.
We currently have no model to charge users for the use of the platform
but for other hardware that might change in a few years, depending on
what the vendors of that hardware choose.

We have no plans to charge for Squeezeboxes, if we ever want to include
services for which _we_ have to pay this will obviously not hold - for
now these services are simply not available for Squeezebox users.

In the end, always remember: everybody whose business model is to
permanently give you something for free will sell you instead in the end
in the form of data or advertising, there is no free lunch.

John Doe the hobby developer is one thing, general public in an open
source module is even worse.

There is another thing, and it's the primary cause why you haven't seen
large-scale commercial projects using the Squeezebox platform so far:
don't get fooled, some of the services supported by the server live by
the mercy of Logitech having paid for them or licenses for them. TuneIn
being a nice example. Everybody here seems to assume that just putting
the radio code into LMS will save that feature forever. This might be
true for hardware Squeezeboxes but it someone picked up on this and
started selling new hardware in large volumes relying on LMS with TuneIn
support you might quickly see some change.

Integrating services based on a hacked API in an open source server is
something that is nice and fine and tolerated as long as the overall
exposure is low and it's primarily being used in DIY systems but with
such solutions you will not see a striving platform in the long term but
it will only be acceptable as a "OK, this is some legacy support for
that old hardware" case.

It can get a little bit more complicated . some service would not really
like to have thier "secret handshake" running on open source software at
the end users machines . So the secret part must in some cases run
elsewhere .

They actually want to deal with a commercial entity if its not their
very own implementation .

They are happy to handle help and APi keys to Sonos or Logitech or
whatnot but not "John Doe" the hobby developer .

I'm trying to figure this out now...

Is your ickstream system a replacement for Mysqueezebox.com? So, is it a
kind of online server that we'd have to subscribe to if we want to use
the new plugins?
Or are the Plugins real LMS plugins that run locally on our LMS Server
devices (like the Triode Spotify Plugin)?

The reason I ask:

Mysqueezebox.com lives at the mercy of Logitech. Ickstream would live at
the mercy of whoever is behind it, but LMS Plugins live forever, no
matter what. They might not get updated anymore and eventually might
lose compatibility with the corresponding service, but they would not
rely on a (cost intensive) server infrastructure like Mysqueezebox and a
Dev could always pick up the code and continue to work on them.

So, where are you heading with this? The information found in your blog
and occasional posts leaves me with more questions than answers... ;)

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2014-06-14 Thread erland

When the Community Squeeze project recently ended due to the legal
problems we got some questions from users regarding the scope of
ickStream.
Due to this we want to share a bit more information about the current
status in the ickStream project.

First of all, we are very sorry to see that the Community Squeeze
project now officially has ended and we would like to thank Triode and
JohnSwenson for trying to find alternative ways to release the software
and hardware they have been working on during the Community Squeeze
project. Hopefully the current situation will just be a small bump on
the road and we are soon going to get the community based hardware
player we all want. From what we have seen so far there shouldn't be any
problem to use ickStream on a community based hardware player using the
Wandboard.

In the ickStream team we have been working on integrating more online
services with the ickStream Music Platform. As you might have seen from
our blog/newsletter we have also started to prioritise Squeezebox
support to secure a way for existing Squeezebox users to access online
streaming services. The beta testers invited to our private beta program
are currently in the process of testing the Squeezebox integration and
the ability to use ickStream from any type Squeezebox player with all
the traditional Squeezebox remote control apps.

On the hardware side we are still focusing on working with hardware
partners to provide hardware supporting ickStream natively. If this
doesn't work out, we will probably eventually design our own hardware,
but since we are still a small team and collaboration with partners
looks promising we want to prioritze our efforts and prefer to let
partners handle the hardware. It's also important to remember that one
of the goals with ickStream Music Platform is to provide an environment
where you in the same system can mix hardware from many different
hardware vendors.

Finally, we are also looking at possibilities to have an open beta
program where early adopters in the Squeezebox community can try some of
the ickStream provided online streaming services, but we can't promise
anything regarding this right now, we just wanted to let you know that
we are investigating it.

We got a question regarding this so just to clarify it a bit. What we
have done is to implement a LMS plugin which enables people to access
ickStream provided online services through a sub menu under "My Apps" in
your normal LMS/Squeezebox interface. The plugin is currently only
available to people invited to our beta program.

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2014-04-25 Thread remd

We are glad to announce that both older and newer Squeezeboxes are now
supported on the ickStream platform.

OLD SQUEEZEBOX SUPPORT
The support for older Squeezeboxes has been developed through a Logitech
Media Server (LMS) plugin currently available to ickStream beta testers.

This means that older Squeezeboxes can access the ickStream platform
through LMS installed on any platform and newer Squeezeboxes can either
use the same plugin or the applet allowing direct access to ickStream.

ICKSTREAM SERVICES AVAILABLE ON LMS
While developing the support for the older Squeezeboxes we have gone one
step beyond and made ickStream available as a LMS app, allowing any
Squeezebox to directly access ickStream’s services and content.
The app is currently available to beta testers and allows access to
selected services from the ickStream platform.
New content and services will be available as they are added to
ickStream.

We will share some more details about this in our upcoming newsletter.
In the mean time make sure to fill in our beta tester survey if you want
to be part of the ickStream beta testers:
http://survey.ickstream.com/index.php/596295/lang-en

We are currently particularly interested in beta testers for some of our
services, so let us know if you are interested and you are using one of
the following services:
Deezer, Qobuz, WiMP, Soundcloud, rdio or Calmradio.

Thanks for your interest and support!

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2013-12-09 Thread PasTim

Regarding alternative ways of selecting and playing music, the user
interface provided by MinimServer (via any UPnP controller) is by far
the best I have found for a multi-platform UPnP/DLNA solution, and it is
free. It's a very flexible and logical way to select items to play in
any number of ways, with hierarchies that change depending on what you
have selected thus far. Really rather neat. It can't do what ickStream
will do (as far as I understand it, and I know it's not a server), but
some of the design ideas may be of interest.

The other non-LMS solution I've been pursuing is foobar2000 with
foo_upnp. It runs well under Wine on linux, and if anything is even
more flexible, but it can be a little too clever and complex at times.

LMS 7.8 on VortexBox Midi, FLACs 16->24 bit, 44.1->192kbps. Touch with
EDO on Ethernet, coax out to a Musical Fidelity M1 CLiC. Wireless
Xubuntu laptop controls server using Chromium. Meridian Explorer USB
DAC to listen to LMS via Squeezelite on Vortexbox & other PCs as
required. Spare Touch in loft!

primary target, but that's not something "frozen".
And, juste like others here, I'm concerned about what will happen when
my SB harware comes to fail.

So here are my needs and current use of my system :
- 1 sb3 (still branded "slimdevices", hence my concern...) currently
rigged to a set of not-so-bad speakers, and so turned in a kind of
"boom", mainly use in kitchen or bathroom.
- 1 computer running squeezeslave and moose for the UI, connected to my
main living room amp
I'd like to try and buy a couple of "touches" (or SB3) from ebay, to be
able to install something permanent in kitchen and bathroom, and maybe
to connect to main amp instead of computer

But I could imagine moving to another system (Software/Hardware).

Concerning my song selections (I was hesitating to post in Erland's poll
about playlists, but it seems better to do it here) :
I'm currently using MusicIP/Sugarcube, (thinking of trying out SmartMix
too), Erland's Dynamic Playlists, TrackStat, and I also did some tests
on setting up my own smart selection system, based on custom tagging
(like "mood / "tempo" / "feeling" ...) and retrieved with CustomBrowse /
selected with SQL Playlists.

I also use a set (maybe 20) of static playlists (like "Cover songs",
"Road Mix Day", "-/Night" both transfered to my car audio, ...) and what
I most missed in SBS/LMS, was the ability to easily add any song
(including, but not only, the currently playing track) to any of these
playlists, without having to "load" this target playlist and/or loose my
current track selection.

I do use "Playlist Manager" that allows to do this using the "add..."
button, but somehow I'm not altogether satisfied.

PS : I registered as potential beta tester, but I might not be very
useful here.
On the other hand, I may be able to help with translation to french, if
needed. (I've done this before)

Hello

solution, it means they can not pull new wires to central location.
And I don't really think to have central location is cheaper than having
hardware in each room.
If you consider amour of labor to pull wires set the racks add
distribution amps controllers etc.. - sky is the limit. :-)
But anyway really exited about the project.

Hello
Im really looking forward for full metadata api integration.
We are developers and integrators using systems like www.savantav.com
and www.crestron.com, would be nice if we can finally have great
streaming product with full metadata control.
Since Logitech quit the game I was trying to find replacement.
I was trying Sonos but no luck, they don't like to open the the system
for third party integration.
If ickstream will work well, that could be huge thing for custom audio
integrators.
Looking forward for beta testing.

I can see how the ability to synch is useful for some. I think I've
never had much of a need because my wife is stuck in the 70's, the 4
kids like teen pop, and I'm more of a nick cave, tom waits kind of guy.
I'm hoping as the kids age, we'll be able to entertain more or have some
common musical interests. If so, I'd be all for synching, but think it
would be greatly simplified if done in hardware.

I agree, but have never seen anything at a reasonable cost that provides
those functions in a usable way. I have voice announcements through
homeseer's squeezebox plugin, but it doesn't work perfectly and can be
annoying. Since I work from home, it was very handy when the youngest
was sleeping and I could have a voice message tell me when he was up
from his nap based on a door sensor. In that case it was door sensor -
to rf module - to ha software - to squeezebox plugin - to squeezebox
server - to player - to speakers. Too much involved, too complicated,
too much stuff to go wrong. I see announcements as an on-board source
that is routed as needed by something that has a single purpose - sound
in my home. Something like the "I am very inexpensive." block in the
attached diagram is what I want to build. Maybe the interface to
squeezebox server will allow me to do what I want, but I'm new to
JSON/RPC and can't find enough info or examples on how to begin hacking
at code. I've done a fair amount of .net and microcontroller
programming, but the learning curve looks pretty steep from where I'm
at. I guess I might get somewhere if I stopped making block diagrams
and started working on it.

The system you linked to looks nice, but expensive.

Hi mweb,

I thing the best product I know today for a central wireing is the
Russound C5 where you have 8 different stereo zone with 2x20W each also
controlled by remote app via ethernet.

For a distributed approach I saw this:
http://openrb.com/streaming-player/(see at products)
complete product for DIN rail, control interface to KNX, streaming with
DAC and amplifier, have a look. I don't know the price and how it
works.

In a house 2.0 the audio system is not just a multiroom system, it's
also perfect linked with the logic of the smart house.

It's an additional interface toward the habitants. If I stand at the
door and want to leave the house it can tell me which window is still
open.

Or if it's raining, the house can tell me which window should be
closed.

It could tell you many other things. If you like, it's just SW. Somebody
like this, other other events to be announced by voice.

It's just an mp3 file which is played by the house logic like KNX or
others.

If the telefon rings the audio volume goes down to 10% and if you
on-hook back to previous volume.

For such an approuch you need a central control that's the reason why
LMS becomes my favorit. Not only for me :)

It sounds a bit future, but it's real today in many households.

Another thing is also important to cover, a surround system with 5.1 or
7.1. This must behave as all other players.

My thought

as an aside, I use synching a lot! At home, I have 2 or 3 units synched
several hours a day. At the weekend place, I have two players almost
always synched. And there are times at home (party) that I have all 7
zones playing the same thing. Works great to have music in entire house
without having to crank it up really loud at one end of the house (not
that I don't do that sometimes as well!)

My main setup is not too different from yours. I have 7 zones in my
(actually pretty small) house. And some of these are fed by a single
amplifier with a speaker selector box (so are either on or off, but
obviously playing the same thing; these tend to be in bathroom with
ceiling speakers, wife's walkin closet/dressing room area, etc.). These
tend to be on for things like morning radio, early evening news radio,
npr, etc. But other areas can be different things playing with different
amps (e.g., main living room with main 2 channel system/speakers, dining
area, etc). So not counting the bedside Boom (which is self contained)
and one radio for moving around (porch, patio, etc.), I have only 3
amplifiers even though I have 7 zones (and one of those amps is also the
amp for my AV sytem).

My signature shows the various sb players I have. I control everything
with ipeng on iphone or ipad or squeezepad on ipad. My wife mostly uses
the SB Controller (easy and always sitting on kitchen counter).

I have one set of amplifier+speakers for each room and it is a waste of
space and money in my opinion. Everyone enjoys music in their own way
with their own preferred setup, but it bugs me that many don't enjoy it
enough because it costs too much or takes too much knowledge to set up
and operate. I have 9 zones that I can control with ipeng. 7 of the 9
have their speaker wires ran to a common place in my house. So I've got
a bunch of amplifiers in players located in that area. Out of the 9,
the 2 areas that get used the most are the dining room and the deck.
These have in-wall and mounted outdoor speakers. I'm not sure where I'd
locate the player and amp in those areas that wouldn't be a nuisance.
I'm certain that my family members would find more opportunities to
screw things up if the equipment were accessible. So ideally for me, a
combination of distributed, where speaker wires go to a common area, and
networked, where players are remote is the best solution.

My "Analog audio routing circuit" and "Speaker selector circuit" blocks
would be an idea for a way to be more efficient. I have 9 zones and
have had them for years, but I can't remember a time that I've had
different music playing in more than 2 areas. So I've got a bunch of
equipment always sitting there wasting energy and taking up space. I've
rarely used synching (like most I'd guess), but would like to have a
very easy way to transfer the currently playing music in one zone to
another. Synching could be done more appropriately with the audio
routing hardware.

I think a music system in a house should be as common as a refrigerator.
Two or three rooms where the speaker wires run to a common spot and are
powered by a minimum number of class D amplifiers and players so it
could be DIRT cheap with a common point of control. IMO - The more
people listen to their favorite music, the happier they are. I can't
imagine anyone doing dreadfully bad while listening to their favorite
song.

Just to make sure I understand your proposed setup.
Why do you need the "Analog audio routing circuit" and "Speaker selector
circuit" ?

Is it because you can't afford to have one set of amplifier+speakers per
streaming device or can't afford one streaming device per room or is
there some other reason ?

Typically, my feeling is that with players that support synchronization,
you want to put a player+amplifier+speakers in each room.
Such setup would result in that you only have to select which player to
output the sound from and this will likely make the remote control
significantly simpler on top of this it means that you only need an
Ethernet cable to each room so the cabling should get simpler (you might
even be able to use WiFi for at least a few of the rooms).

I don't know how to do this and am open to any suggestions. I think
there should be an ipeng player for each zone. I can do the
hardware/firmware for the analog and speaker routing blocks. I guess
ideally, I'd build something that receives status and commands from the
music server/ipeng that would take care of the control. Maybe
integrated into the analog routing block. I could do the hardware and
firmware for control, but I'm not sure how I'd implement the interface
to the music server in firmware. I've got a squeeze server plugin for
homeseer (home automation software) that might get me there, but it's
not really what I want. I'd prefer something standalone.

When I'm thinking about how we could introduce a family concept in
ickStream it would more or less match what you are describing and since
each account is associated with one device or set of devices at the
time, it won't violate any terms. However, as previously mentioned, we
haven't got to the analysis of this kind of functionality yet.

All I can guess is that many have figured out a workaround that I
haven't. I get the "This player is already registered to another user."
message way too often and have to shuffle things around to get what I
want.

I'm not thinking of a pool, but independent inputs where the server just
allows the user to pick the source. I'd pick streaming device 1, the
kids would pick streaming device 2. A device associated with each
account so I can't see how any terms of service could be violated. It
wouldn't be much different than hooking up two streaming devices to an
AV receiver with mutli zone capability.

Pandora doesn't have this capability. As far as I know, only Rdio and
Rhapsody have services that allow family plans.

I'm not real clear on what ickstream is, but I'm guessing it might be
for people who want to have a unified view into their music no matter
where they are. What I've been looking for is a way for distributed
home audio to be dirt cheap, support streaming music in a usable way,
and be controlled by something as elegant as ipeng. I'd like to move
towards something similar to the attached block diagram, I think.

Good luck with your product.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?98198-Usage-of-online-services-in-your-family
I got the feeling that most people didn't even want to consider having
multiple accounts for premium streaming services.

We haven't analyzed this part of the functionality in detail yet, the
real question here is how much we should focus on families. A single
user can only be at one place at the time so for a single user your use
case doesn't make sense, but for a family I understand that it makes
sense. In a family we obviously have the scenario that one family member
might want to play one kind of music in one room while another family
member might want to play different music in a another room
simultaneously.

In my mind, it might be possible that we consider to have some kind of
support for a family concept, where each family member have individual
ickStream accounts but they can configure that the playback resources
should be possible to share within the family. I suspect a solution like
this would solve your usage scenario at least partly. Each family member
would have their own ickStream and pandora account and they would be
able to output the music on any player in the house.

I'm less optimistic about having some kind of pool solution where you
can setup a pool of premium streaming accounts, for example three
Pandora accounts, and the system picks the first free account when
someone wants to stream Pandora music. I think such solution would
probably violate the user agreement some of the premium streaming
providers have and it will also result in that you loose all
personalization features the premium streaming provider offers you to
setup in their account.

None of this is of course a problem for premium streaming services that
allows multiple songs to be streamed simultaneously from the same
account, I'm not sure what kind of restrictions Pandora have in this
regard.

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2013-08-17 Thread mweb

In your other post you wrote:

One limitation I still want to apply is that with one online streaming
account you will still only be able to stream a single song to one
device or to multiple devices synchronized, basically no possibility to
play different songs to different devices simultaneously as this usually
is prohibited by the streaming providers and won't change in the
future.

For example, if I have the following sources:
Roku LT #1 tied to Pandora account #1
Roku LT #2 tied to Pandora account #2
squeezebox player #1
squeezebox player #2

that are connected to a board that allows selection of the input to
route to one or both of two outputs, would ickstream allow for the
proper control to integrate it all together with something similar to
ipeng?

I currently have a vortexbox, a couple of Rpi's running squeezeslave,
and a bunch of amps to handle my 7 audio zones for my home. It's a
pretty ugly setup. I'd like to replace it with less sources and less
amplifiers, with the addition of a board that does analog switching at
the input and maybe even relay switching at the output of the amps.
It's all casual listening so audio quality isn't a concern. I just need
to be able to listen to different music in two spots in my home at the
same time and be able to play Pandora or something similar in those two
spots at the same time from separate accounts.

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2013-07-31 Thread chris.mason

Its been a looong time since I posted in these forums, but I just popped
in to say '+1' to this effort!

I'm very excited about this, not just because it could breath new life
in to the SB ecosystem, but simply for what it is - a group of
enthusiasts, passionate about something, willing to commit time, effort
and money to realise something that could be of benefit to many people.

Like many others, I've recently started wondering what I'm going to do
with my SBs. I only have an SB3 (an original SlimDevices model), and a
Boom, but I started looking to add another Boom when I discovered the
news about all things SB going away. Then I discovered IckStream.

Now I understand that certainly to begin with my SB3 and Boom won't be
supported. I very much hope they will be in the future. Having read
through this entire thread, I'm optimistic they will be somehow. I've
invested a lot of time in getting my setup working how I want it to, and
time spent tagging my music. So for what it is worth, here is an
outline of my 'configuration':

One media server running Ubuntu and LMS. This serves an SB3, and a Boom
(soon to be two Booms I hope, if I can get something on EBay).
The media server is running on a very old PC, with an efficient Pentium
4 under the hood. I don't like having the server on all the time -
broadly speaking, the server runs during the day, and is switched off at
night, thats when MySB comes into play.

We listen to a lot of radio, but also our own music. We also really
like some of the natural sounds, and often have the 'rain' sound playing
from MySB during the night.

I use a number of plugins to make my system work for me, including
LastFM for recording what music of my own I listen to, MusicIP, AutoDim
display for both Boom and SB (essential), Server Power Control (again
essential - this is how I control switching between local LMS and MySB).
SleepFade, TitleSwitcher, WeatherDateTime.

I do like to tweak and fiddle with things, which is one of the reasons I
like the SB ecosystem - because I fiddle with it, and make it work for
me. That comes at a cost; things go wrong, but I try to keep it simple
so that my wife and daughter can use it.

Which brings me on to tagging.
Like many others, I have a collection of classical music, and the lack
of ability to manage it well in LMS is a source of frustration. I used
to use Erlands plugins to help this, but things got complicated, so I
simplified the tagging, which has led to a less-than-desirable UI
experience when browsing classical music. The additional annoyance was
the unability to set out exactly how I wanted my menu AND sub-menu
structure to work on the SB3 and Boom UI, but I imagine that isn't
really in your scope.

I'd be happy to run my own LMS 24/7; I'm thinking about investing in a
new small footprint PC or NAS perhaps which uses little power so can
stay on, that would solve the problem of MySB going away.but I won't
be able to here the natural sounds anymore though!

Sorry for the long rambling post - basically just wanted to say, I'm
very excited for the work you guys are doing!

Chris.

I don't want to get rid of anything, but I've an eye to the future when
my Touch may fail, or the LMS server might be incompatible with future
hardware/OS's, and so on. My collection is something for decades, not
just next year.

UPnP compatibility seems a plausible alternative to LMS. My priority is
to assume I have no LMS, just a load of flacs and a UPnP-compliant
amplifier. If a UPnP controller is then available on a wireless device
that I can use to scan many tracks with longs names (hence laptop/tablet
as opposed to a smartphone), and is compatible with servers such as
foobar2000 (which I picked as a server because it can create customised
menus), then that may provide a workable alternative to LMS. Given the
way I believe UPnP works the controller would need to be able to pick up
the menus from the server, and hence avail itself of foobar's (or any
other server's) ability to create non-standard menus.

Personally I prefer Linux as a software platform since I hope to be able
to find a version that runs on a wider range of kit than anything from
Apple (obviously) or Android (particularly seeing what ubuntu are doing
regarding Android systems).

I'm not sure I understand which part(s) you want to get rid of in your
current system.

We have an item on our roadmap about being able to use content from UPnP
Media Server's, so my guess would be that when we (or a third party
developer) implements this, you would probably be able to browse content
offered by foobar2000 and play it on an ickStream player. It will
probably not be a traditional generic UPnP controller, because we want
to provide the ickStream experience, but it will use the UPnP protocol
to browse/search the content. I can't say exactly when this will be
implemented but it's in the plan. Also, the API's in ickStream isn't
dependent on a certain server providing the content, it's possible for
third party developers to integrate pretty much any server or online
service they like as long as it offers some kind of API to access the
content.

However, I like to understand which of the current hardware/software you
would like to be part of your optimal future solution:
- Would foobar2000 be used ? As a client ? As a server ? As both client
and server ?
- Would Squeezebox Touch hardware be used ?
- Would LMS be used ?
- Would an iOS/Android device be used as remote control ?
- Or would you do all control via a computer in front of you ?

Regarding music content, third party developers can add pretty much
whatever they like through our API, as an example I've been playing with
the idea of integrating Custom Browse/Custom Scan plugin menus, as this
could be solution for people who want to continue using LMS as content
service and want extreme customization possibilities. This is probably
something I would do on my spare time, I don't think the standard
ickStream functionality is going to have the extreme customization
possibilities that are available in Custom Browse/Custom Scan today,
primarily because it would make it too complex for most people and we
want the standard system to be very easy to use without the need to
learn how to configure it before you can use it.

We know we can't do everything ourselves, so we have focused on creating
good API's that allows third party developers to enhance the system in
ways we can't imagine ourselves, pretty much the same philosophy as Slim
Devices originally had with the Squeezebox system. My guess is that most
people are going to get a good out of the box experience from the start,
but we won't see the full potential until after a few years when third
party developers fully have started to take advantage of all the
possibilities.

Finally, important to remember, don't look at ickStream as an music
server replacement, we will integrate with LMS and with other music
servers (for people who don't want to use LMS). Time will tell if we
will also provide our own music server, but at the moment our feeling is
that there are good ones available so it's better to integrate with
existing ones instead of trying to make our own.

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2013-07-24 Thread PasTim

As an LMS (Touch) user, I have been looking at alternatives. The main
listening is done in my lounge, remote from the music server, connected
via Ethernet.

The closest I got to a working alternative that can make use of custom
tags (for classical music) was:

- flacs still on my Vortexbox as usual (but not using the DLNA server
provided)
- foobar2000 on my main deskptop Linux PC (under Wine), reading the
flacs from the Vortexbox, with the UPnP plugin, using foobar's
customised DLNA menu facility (which can read custom tags) and acting as
the server over Ethernet
- one or another UPnP controller on my (wireless) laptop Linux PC or
SmartPhone controlling foobar2000
- my hi-fi pre-amp supports UPnP (over Ethernet) but the menu is worse
than useless, hence the use of a laptop (or smartphone) as a controller

This all almost works, except that the controllers are all very
unreliable (crashing regularly, failing to read the menus, and so on),
so near useless for regular listening.

foobar2000 is a wonderful, peerless, tool, and I wouldn't be without it,
even with LMS. I use it for playing music near the server, checking
tags (set using puddletag or mp3tag) and format conversion. I have built
up (filter) menus not unlike those I have in Custom Browse in LMS.

I can listen to my music in other rooms via wired PCs and foobar2000,
without using UPnP. This doesn't provide any synchronisation, but I
have rarely wanted to do this except to prove LMS can do it well. If I
have to I could also run foobar2000 on my laptop in the lounge, plug the
laptop into the Ethernet, and play music out via the async USB DAC in my
hi-fi, but that leaves wires all over the room which I don't like.

The reason for describing how my non-LMS system would work is that I
wonder whether ickStream will have the ability to plug the main hole in
this solution, i.e. provide a reliable UPnP Controller, or provide some
other solution to drive my pre-amp direct without using my LMS Touch,
with customised tags and menus.

(http://www.ickstream.com), among other things it will have some check
boxes where users can select what they think they can help us test and

In the beginning we are probably going to be primarily focused at
Pop/Rock music (since that's what most people listen to), but I'd like
to ensure we design the system in such way so it can be enhanced to also
support Classical music in a good way on longer terms.

If the rewards, in terms of a better user interface, were sufficient
then I would do both. I don't know if others would, nor how one would
find out.

There are several related tagging issues for which people would have to
be able to give structured answers. For instance, I know that some
systems recommend using Artist for Composer, and place Artists in the
track title (anathema to me, but that just goes to show...).
Contributors would need to be able to say precisely how they have used
the fields.

To show willing, if you want me to define what I do and maybe send some
data to you as a sample, I'd be happy to make a small start (you'd have
to give me a hint about how to extract and send the metadata). However,
it seems to me that you need to find a way to be in contact with a large
enough group of people with the same interests, and I don't know how you
would do that.

I think there are two big questions:
1. Is people who love classical music willing to adapt to a standardized
way of handling classical music metadata or will it be too much work to
change their existing collection.
2. Are people who love classical music willing to submit and share their
metadata with other people who love classical music and is the other
people willing to use the shared metadata.

If the answer is "No" to both these questions, we can probably forget
about making something better than the current Custom Browse/Custom Scan
solution we have for Squeezebox. If the answer is "Yes" to both these
questions there is some potential to start doing something. It's
probably possible to make a configurable tool that can extract some of
the data from the tags in case you have used well structured custom tags
for the classical data.

Sadly the chances of this happening are vanishingly small now. If the
standards (such as they are) had been done right in the first place

I think we are talking about two things:
- An alternative way to groups tracks, since the normal ALBUM grouping
doesn't work for classical music. There are other cases where this might
be useful but for classical music it's quite common that you want a
different kind of grouping than how the pieces are combined on an album.

- A way to make playlists contain other stuff that tracks, this can be
useful for pop/rock also.

I won't promise anything at this stage, but your post definitely started
to make me think about how it could be done.

The real challenge here is that:
- It will never work for online streaming services, because their data
doesn't contain this kind of information
- It will never work if people are forced to use custom tags, because
most people only use the tags available as default in their tagging
software

The problem with this is that due to the above we can't rely on tagging
software and to make it work for streaming services we would need to
able to enhance the streaming service information with additional
metadata and barely none is going to be willing to maintain their own
data for content from streaming services. The SMD
(http://socialmusicdiscovery.org) project was intended to solve the
library maintenance part, but at the moment I've refocused on realizing
ickStream and the other contributors to SMD can't spare much time, so
SMD is currently more or less paused. I still want to re-activate SMD at
some time, but my personal feeling is that for it to work for most
users, users would have to be able to share their metadata in similar
fashion as they can do today with musicbrainz. If every user have to
enter the data manually, it's not going to be popular enough to make it
worthwhile to implement.

If all classical music fans would be able to agree on a tagging scheme
for classical music, we would at least have taken a first step towards
being able to convince the tagging software developers to add support
for it. If there was a standardized tagging scheme, it would be easier
to make a content server for local music that supported it. I know
musicbrainz has done some work to standardize metadata for classical
music (http://musicbrainz.org/doc/Classical_Music_FAQ) but I'm not sure
how the progress is.

I have Jazz CDs that similarly need to be classed as containing one or
more 'Works'.

I have used Erlands basic plan from
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Setup_browse_menu_for_classical_music,
with the addition of a 'WorkArtist'. I'm aware other people have
treated AlbumTitle as Work, Track as Movement, and AlbumArtist as
WorkArtist, but I didn't want to lose the Album concept entirely,
particularly where an Album contains a Concert of many Works.

I guess one could still go with using Album information for Work
provided some other glue was available to show that the Works are part
of a named collection.

One other reason for wanting both Album and Work information is that,
sad fellow that I am, I sometimes have more than one recording of the
same Work by the same Artist (or set of Artists). I want the Work and
Movement names to be exactly the same across all performances by any
Artists (and I spend hours making sure this is true), so where the
Artist(s) are the same I need the AlbumTitle to differentiate between
them (my memory for performance years being somewhat limited).

Here endeth the classical rant...

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2013-07-14 Thread mps

Actually, I think the benefits could go beyond classical.
* Many groups of rock pieces meant to be listened to together could well
be tagged as a work: E.g., the linked songs in almost any Grateful Dead
concert, Boston's Walk On Suite, etc.
* Including albums as entries in Playlists is the same idea.
* So is including playlists in other playlists
E.g.,
1. Under the Bridge (a single track)
2. My Daily Meditations (a playlist)
3. Live at Stubb's (an album)
4. China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider (a non-classical "work")
5. New World Symphony (a work)

I don't think the functionality would be that hard to implement, but the
UI could be a challenge. Playlists would now be trees instead of lists,
so you'd need a good widget for navigating into the
work/album/sub-playlist.

Excited about the product. Your newsletter talks about powerful
heterogeneous playlists. One thing I would like to see is to put a work

Personally I'd prefer a web bowser based controller on the assumption
that it would be more future-proof and require little or no installation
(with associated concerns about compatible libraries, O/S updates
mucking up the app, etc). It is not, however, a make-or-break issue.

Fair enough, but I won't be able to use this until there's a controller
I can run on a linux laptop. At an extreme pinch an android app on a
smartphone would be OK, but I'd much rather not - those of us whose eyes

I guess I might have to buy a tablet, although that would cost me more
than the Touch, and about the same as my VB server, which seems a lot
for a control device.

However, don't get me wrong, I am interested and keen to see what you
come up with, and hopeful it would help me, even with my somewhat
limited local-use-only needs.

It's not so much the question of "power" of an App. The issue is: if you
want to run something in a web browser you need a web server.
With the Squeezeboxes, that's not a problem, they are always being
controlled through a server anyway.

But on ickStream there is no central server that needs to be always on
and that the player is always connected to so it's much more difficult
to do a web controller.

We do want to eventually have this and have some ideas about how it can
be done, but for now Apps are simply the more simple solution :)

BTW: we do NOT plan to limit this to iOS or Android. In fact we'll have
an openly published API so everyone can write a controller for any
platform. We just started with iOS because that was the easiest thing
for us to implement.

If you haven't included this already can I suggest a controller that

smartphones might be restricted by screen size. This method also

Well, the cloud component is actually quite simple: it primarily does
protocol conversion and account t management, comparable to the role
MySqueezebox.com has when you use LMS (it does NOT control any players).

One difference is that it also offers library services like playlist
management, favorites and statistics,
Here, too, these services are optional (you could use others, e.g. As
provided by a controller or a server or a local server/controller could
use their data for e.g. An own dynamic playlist implementation.

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2013-07-08 Thread epoch1970

I read the newsletter I received today; For me the Cloud component
description feels a bit cloudy, after I thought I understood what the
Content Services component was…
Is this Cloud thing a provisioning component ?

Thanks for the offer, unfortunately the remote control application which
is used for testing only works on iOS devices at this stage, we will
keep you in mind when we have made one for Android. If you haven't done
it already, it's a good idea to register your interest as beta tester on
our web site (http://www.ickstream.com).

The same holds for me. That is:
- I did not read everything in the thread
- I am a deezer Premium+ user
- experiencing momentarily problems with squeezebox/LMS and deezer
(mherger is working on that)

Apart from the above:
- I have 2 Squeezebox radios and a Winphone
- Sorry, I do not have any I-Things,
- But I do have access to an array of android devices
- I do have a background in usability testing and software engineering

I wish all the luck to the ickStream development team and am looking
forward to see the results of your efforts
