[Elecraft] K3 utility and Lbuntu 12.04

2012-06-04 Thread G4LNA
I did have a search for this, but I found no other replies, so I'm wondering
if anyone else is having the same problem.

I recently installed LBuntu 12.04 on my netbook which I use for updating the
K3, previously it had 10.04 LTS and the K3 utility worked fine, but now with
Lbuntu it doesn't seemed to work. The utility opens but it wouldn't pick up
the USB port connection.

I spent a couple of hours last night trying all different things, it seems
like Lbuntu no longer seems to recognise ttyUSB1, I even tried installing
PuTTY to see if I could change the settings using that, but no.

The only way I could get around the problem was to install Ubuntu 9.10 on a
separate small partition of its own and presto, without touching anything it
worked, just a bit of a nuisance having two operating systems when one
should do.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] N3FJP rig control settings?

2012-06-04 Thread Fred Smith
I wanted a logging program that did everything one should and be very
customizable and advanced in features. I tried them all free and purchased
and after a year made a decision on one that was head and shoulders above
the others that being Logic8 now 9. That was 5 years ago and would hate to
ever have to change the main reason you have phone and email access to the
developer for problems and help if you need it. If you have a problem you
can't get resolved yourself he can logon to your computer and work on the
program to fix or add whatever needs to be done. He responds in real time
and updates come as soon as a problem is found or a new feature needs to be
added to the program.

It does all of the things named in this thread and adds too them with
support for most all contests, QSO parties, Field Day and so on. Award
tracking and needed entries by band and mode not confirmed can be setup with
voice announce. The best way to check the Best Logger out is go to
hosenose.com then go to Logic9 and download a full working version for a 30
day trial and judge for you. A really good logging program is big deals in
our shacks now with all they do and even the most costly of them are one of
the cheapest things we do in the hobby. So why not choose the best?

Depends what you want in a logging application.
If you're just interested in electronic logging and don't want rig control
it's just fine.

If you want rig control, real time spotting network integration, flexible
award handling and tracking including log database sorting, integration of
LoTW and eQSL, ADIF and Cabrillo import and export, etc, etc, etc... Look
elsewhere.

I use the DX Lab Suite. It's free (I'm cheap) for general logging and N1MM,
also free, for contesting.
Others will sing the praises of Ham Radio Deluxe but it's free days are
numbered if not over and it sometimes sucks the very life out of your
computer (a little buggy).
Still others like Logger32.

If DX Lab wasn't free I'd pay for it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 utility and Lbuntu 12.04

2012-06-04 Thread G4LNA
Thanks for that Dick, I think the only real difference is the Desktop, the
Lbuntu is the light version of Ubuntu which as it doesn't have the glossy
graphics heavy Desktop. I haven't tried it on the Desktop PC as it means
lugging the radio downstairs to the main computer, that's the reason why I
use the Netbook.

I don't really want to put Ubuntu 12.04 on the Netbook as it slows it down
quite a bit, I might have to stick with the work around for now.

I too went back to the older version. I was having loading problems and
system (win7-64) errors when starting it. Contacted N2BC and he had me
download a newer version - it loaded OK, but caused other problems with

Uninstalled it completely and installed the old version and all is fine

[Elecraft] K3Util & LPBridge & W4P3

2012-06-04 Thread Adrian
I have the extra usb vga card working well to deliver the W4P3 prog via
Eliphan vga grabber, to the original viewsonic screen at suggested 1440
x 900 resolution, which fills the screen nicely and matches suggested P3
setting.

However it doesn't compare to the clarity of the direct connection 1920
x 1080 viewsonic to the P3, but I am just playing. I can use the laptop
plus both external screens in the existing configuration setups to
enable W4P3 on its own screen on the viewsonic.

Has anyone found a way to run K3Util on LPbridge v-ports to enable W4P3
& K3Util to run simultaneously with the main connected to K3?

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] N3FJP rig control settings?

2012-06-04 Thread John Shadle
Hi Terry,
I have been using N3FJP's AC Log for a while, both with my K2 and now
my K3. I haven't had any trouble at all with DX spotting and clicking
on a spot to do a frequency change with either rig. I can take a look
at my settings if you like.

So, basically, clicking on a spot doesn't work? You're getting the
wrong mode and even frequency? That's strange...

N3FJP recently updated AC Log and it's a much improved program. It's
now at version 3.2 (although I have only upgraded to 3.1 so far,
myself). If you purchased it in the past, you're entitled to a free
upgrade.

It might be best to try to post your question to the AC Log list, too.
I've found Scott and the rest of the list members invaluable in
setting up the software.

[Elecraft] Openness on the reflector

2012-06-04 Thread Bill
I enjoy my K3 very much, but I am not overly impressed with the level of
"user" support offered via the forums/groups/reflectors.

To me, it is very irritating the amount of private reporting/discussion
that goes on regarding the Elecraft products. It should ALL be out in
the open with nothing hidden. That way, we all get to learn at the same
time and do not have to reinvent the wheel as problems arise.

This is not a Cool-Aide drinking society - there is nothing to protect
or hide. The manufacturers and third party providers all must have very
thick skin and try to work with problems incurred. Users should endeavor
to get the word out when there are problems. With all involved, it
assures that problems will be well vetted and quickly corrected.

The K3 niche is small on the great scale of ham radio. Hence, it is good
to work together - not behind closed doors.
Perhaps the forums/groups/reflectors should endeavor to work as well as
the Elecraft factory support.

Thanks,

But since day one with the K3 there has been problems with the DX spotting. I
asked Scott about it when I built my K3 (#474), he said that it was Elecraft's
fault (that the K3 expects the command string in a different format than other
radios) and he wasn't going to waste his time trying to figure it out. Others
who responded to this post said they got the same answer from Scott and gave up
and moved on. The program works fine except for the DX spotting. And, that
too, actually works (kinda, eventually). When I click on a DX spot first the
MODE changes, which results in a change in received audio (CW to LSB, AM or
whatever), then the BAND changes which results in another audible change, and
finally, the frequency catches up. This happens in about 1.5 to 2 seconds.
The point is, HRD and Logger32, N1MM and others all cause my K3 to quickly and
quietly jump to the correct spot. I have upgraded to ACLog 3.2 hoping for a
fix but it is no better in this regard. I have double checked the speed, port,
parity and stop bit and all is as specified.

Your settings from ACLog would be very much appreciated if you find time.
Thanks for your response.

Terry, WØFM

Hi Terry,
I have been using N3FJP's AC Log for a while, both with my K2 and now my K3. I
haven't had any trouble at all with DX spotting and clicking on a spot to do a
frequency change with either rig. I can take a look at my settings if you like.

So, basically, clicking on a spot doesn't work? You're getting the wrong mode
and even frequency? That's strange...

N3FJP recently updated AC Log and it's a much improved program. It's now at
version 3.2 (although I have only upgraded to 3.1 so far, myself). If you
purchased it in the past, you're entitled to a free upgrade.

It might be best to try to post your question to the AC Log list, too.
I've found Scott and the rest of the list members invaluable in setting up the
software.

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] N3FJP rig control settings?

2012-06-04 Thread Lu Romero
I will say something "nice" about ACLog/N3FJP.

For a casual operator, its probably the best log package out
there for all its capabilities. It will take a while to
outgrow and a while to find all its "compromises". But it
does a lot with a rather flat learning curve. Its the most
powerful casual operator log around!

I have been a user since version 2, which I paid a whopping
$20 for. Every update to date has been free. You load it,
and you instinctively know what to do... It looks like a
cross between a paper log and an Excel spreadsheet. Scott
has done a great job of documenting functions within the
program itself. Add to this the simplicity of use, and you
dont even need a help file or a manual to do any of the
everyday logging chores that a casual operator might want to
do.

The ACLog LoTW integration is paperclip simple and hockey
puck reliable. One button does it all!

An earlier thread spoke about LOGic 8/9. Most of my local
friends have this $125 software along with their IC7800'ds
and PW-1's. Setting aside that Logic is written in FoxPro,
a DBMS that has been obsolete for almost 10 years now, a
casual operator can do 95% of what Logic can do on ACLog for
$100 less, much in the same way that I can hear and work
anything my 7800/PW1 owning friends can hear and work on my
K3/P3/ALS600 rig for $9,000 less than their huge Icom rigs
can, given equivalent aluminum, and I can "take it with me"
in a 9.5lb portable package that I can lift to and from my
desk alone.

My club also purchased Logic for, frankly, no other reason
than because "it is the best" as advised by the above 7800
owners. It has trouble dealing with multiple users on
multiple computers (a probable limitation in the FoxPro
tuple locking code, in my professional opinion, Dennis has
had to make several workaround to it with some success, but
its still not working well). This has been so much of a
pain that we have dispensed with trying to run it on all 5
logging computers and run N1MM on 4 of them, exporting ADIF
logs to Logic for upload to LoTW. And even that could be
covered by ACLog, however, Logic is "paid for" and the QSL
manager likes it, and I dont need another job to do at the
club, so I let sleeping dogs lie :)

Does ACLog have limitations? For more "advanced" users,
certainly. It did have issues with rig control of K3,
mostly when clicking on a spot; it didnt deal with mode
settings correctly. I hear that has been fixed with V3.2,
but I still have 3.0 installed. Even with V3.0, how hard is
it to reach up and hit the MODE button every once in a while
when ACLog fails to correctly deal with the mode switch from
a spot?

Do I still use ACLog? No, I outgrew it when I moved to an
SO2R capable station configuration. I use Logger32 now
because, even with its own variable limitations, I like the
look of it (it resembles N1MM, which I use for contesting)
and the bandmap and the included world maps and its ability
to deal with two rigs (one at a time; ACLog is not SO2R
capable in ANY situaton). But admittedly, it is a complex
software package that has a learning curve. I dont use a lot
of its capability, but what I do use I now feel comfortable
with. It also has integrated RTTY, something ACLog does not
have (you can add the K7RE plug in, but its a bit clunky).

DXLabs, which I have also installed, is complex as well, but
works wonderfully in SO2R and does just about anything...
But I dont like the looks of it and I dont like how much
screen realestate it wants to look "right" for me. It, too,
has a steep learning curve, and I would rather spend my time
operating than configuring software... I do enough of that
at work.

For a casual operator, its hard to beat ACLog. It grows on
you with its elegant simplicity (much like a K1 does!) and
is really simple to deal with. I've yet to find a better
LoTW implementation than the drop dead simple one Scott
created for ACLog... So much so that I currently export my
Logger32 LoTW submissions to ACLog and confirm them using
that program instead of bothering with Logger32's LoTW
setup. Im not doing that forever though, and as I climb up
the Logger32 learning curve, Im sure I will stop.

But in retrospect, I do miss the simplicity and efficiency
of ACLog. Again, for Casual Operators, the feature set and
useability of this package is very hard to beat at any
price. I know that Elecraft owners can relate to that
paradigm.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] N3FJP rig control settings?

2012-06-04 Thread David Inger
Hi Jim,

I have been using ACLog for about 2 years now. I find it simple, easy to
use, and without a lot of complex features that are of no value...to me. I
am a DX'er and an extremely casual contester (for the DX value). ACLog
reports K3's band and exact frequency; which is all I really want it to do
for logging purposes. I don't use it to control a rotator (since my wire
antennas and vertical don't need rotators!) and I don't use it to report DX
spots; I use the standalone DX cluster program DX Summit for that. I also
find the program easy to use for my LoTW uploads.

I have tried several other logging programs such as logger32, Ham Radio
Deluxe (which I use for general rig control and digimodes), DX Keeper, etc.
I find them all too bloated with features I have no use for, and which
require a learning curve that I don't have the time for. One good thing
about ACLog (which is true of many logging programs) is that it will export
your log in ADIF format. If you chose to switch to another logger, it is
relatively painless to export from ACLog and import into your new logger of
choice.

These are my experiences for what it's worth.

Another reason for private conversations is that's the way many of us old time

David,

Your comments about the ease of use of the ACLog program for "casual" users is
EXACTLY why I was hoping to find a fix for the DX spotting issue I have with
ACLog and my K3. I didn't want to give up the simplicity of ACLog, but had
hoped to make it work *fully* with the K3. It does everything I need (and
intuitively) except a smooth spot. I am resistant to change with something
I've used for so many years. But, I guess one can't have everything.

[Elecraft] Elecraft rocks!

I got my invoice last Wednesday for my kx3 and immediately called to change my
shipping to next day air since I needed to leave Thursday for Hamcomm in Plano
and my contest QTH for the weekend June VHF contest.

Well, when I got my shipping notice Friday it was marked to be sent UPS Ground
and would be delivered Thursday nite.

After I calmed down I tried over the weekend to get UPS to change the delivery
to will-call at the UPS center in the next town. I was hoping to be able to
pick it up on my way out to Dallas. No such luck.

The great part: I called Elecraft at 8:20 their time this morning and talked to
Madelyn to see if she could get the delivery changed to will-call.

She called me back about 20 minutes later and told me she had cancelled my
shipment and sent me another kx3 overnite as I had requested. Now, that is
service! Great job Madelyn and Elecraft!

[Elecraft] [K3-KPA500] SWR jumps up with 5 second key down

2012-06-04 Thread ai6ii
I have installed a new antenna and have strange changing swr. When testing
with RigExperts meter I find good resonance at say 15m (21.200). With the K3
at 100 watts reading is 1 bar on K3 meter and 1.0 on KPA500 (STBY). When I
bring the amp online and drive it at 200 watts, all is still good even with
a 15 second key down period. Driving the KPA500 to 275 watts, still okay
with key down, although the KPA500 meter now shows 1.1. BUT when I increase
the drive a little more (300 watts) the swr jumps up to 2.5+ and the KPA500
shows REFL HI and drops into STBY.

And here is the kicker...NOT ALL THE TIME!

So I think it has to be in the coax. But the 75feet of RG213 is brand new
premade from Cable Xperts with the connectors.

I will try a different coax. Any other suggestions?

..mike

What happens when you run the KPA-500 into a dummy load? If all is well, I
would guess that something is changing under high power and affecting the
load.

Subject: [Elecraft] [K3-KPA500] SWR jumps up with 5 second key down

I have installed a new antenna and have strange changing swr. When testing
with RigExperts meter I find good resonance at say 15m (21.200). With the
K3
at 100 watts reading is 1 bar on K3 meter and 1.0 on KPA500 (STBY). When I
bring the amp online and drive it at 200 watts, all is still good even with
a 15 second key down period.

Hi Nate,

Blast! As soon as you mentioned "groups" the penny dropped, I've no idea why
I didn't think of that sooner, I feel a right wally now :)

Thanks mate, all systems are go, now all I've got to do is to rid myself of
Ubuntu 9.1 and reclaim the partition, let the fun begin.

Thanks mate.

Mark has an excellent point, especially if you have a ferrite core
transformer (balun, etc.) somewhere in the antenna system. One thing that
can cause that behavior is heating of the toroid core. At a certain
temperature, the core's magnetic properties change dramatically, changing
the inductance and so causing the SWR to change.

2012-06-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

My first guess is that it is not the coax, but attach a dummy load to
the antenna end of the coax to test it under full power just to be certain.

The most likely thing is that something in your antenna system is arcing
at the higher power. End insulators? Vegetation touching the antenna
wire? center insulator arcing? or balun failing at power?

Jump back down to Ron's input.
I had that exact same scenario with my OCFD. As soon as I transmitted
any length of time on CW above 250W the SWR would jump up and the
KPA500 would fault.
The problem was a too small torroid 4:1 balun. I bought a 5KW balun
from Hy Power Antennas and the problem went away.
Just because the balun is rated to 5KW doesn't mean you have to use
that much power.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3-KPA500] SWR jumps up with 5 second key down

2012-06-04 Thread ai6ii
Okay, some more info. The KPA500 does not have a problem with the inverted
vee for 40 meters, but I will set it up with a dummy load to check just in
case. And I will try the dummy load at the antenna end of the coax as a test
tomorrow.

The antenna is the new Q-52 2 element yagi five band from N6BT. It uses
relays on both the driven element and the reflector to cover 20m (high and
low) 17, 15, 12 and 10. I have contacted Tom Schiller who says he has tested
the antenna with 600-700 watts on CW so power should not be a problem. I
also thought the high power might somehow be keying the relays as the
eight-wire control cable parallels the coax 4 feet across the boom, down the
30 foot mast in through the garage in a pvc conduit then into the shack. I
tried moving the control box away from the amp and experimented with running
the coax a different route into the shack, although the coax and control
cable still came down the mast next to each other. None of these had any
affect.

What Antenna are you using? Not only the balun needs to be rated for your
power but the coils and wire does too. Many mfgrs overrated their equipment.
For 500 watts use kw rated antennas. RG 213 is good but wire and loading need
to be #14.

All that is needed for K3 control are TXD, RXD, and Ground. DTR and RTS
are used for PTT and Key-in (see page 18 of the manual), not serial
communications. The problem, as described earlier, is that the program
is setting the mode first and then the frequency. I've asked other
program authors to reverse those two commands and they have willingly
complied. The sequence is important on the K3 as mode is retained on a
per band/VFO basis and it acts on commands as autonomous units. To me
it seems as though setting the freq first and then the mode should be
the proper sequence for all rigs, not just the K3. Perhaps programs
should be smarter (and some likely are) where after changing the
frequency the mode is polled and then changed only if necessary.

The only problem with USB to serial adapters when controlling the K3 is
apparently with drivers on certain legacy operating systems. I've used
a couple of Prolific based converters on my Linux machines with nary an
issue.

Not my experience. For over five decades, I have used #18 wire for many
antennas. Current antenna has segments of #18 with no ill effects at 1.5kW
output.

Ha ha! Glad you have it sorted now. I learned about permissions long
ago when I first started playing with Slackware in the mid '90s. What
fun that was coming from a DOS background!

I've found some adhesive clips that will allow the ribbon cable to be dressed

assembled units will be getting them as well.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

If all responses of "read the manual page XX" or "check the reflector archives"

I strongly doubt that. Loose connector maybe, but you've probably
already checked that. Some suggestions:

1. Does it do it with dummy load on output of KPA500?

2. Does it do it with dummy load on far end of coax in place of antenna
[not always easy to do]?

3. Does it do it with another antenna [if you have one for 15]?

4. Does it do it on any other bands?

5. You said it is one of Tom's multiband yagi's. Did you tighten
everything down when you assembled it? If I were to bet on it, I'd bet
this is your problem.

6. Is there a balun? If so, what happens to your TV when this high SWR
occurs? All transformer cores will saturate at some power level, the
flux in them just cannot increase anymore, all the little magnet-lets
are already aligned. The power at which this happens is sensitive to
the temperature, and when it does, the balun become non-linear and you
radiate all sorts of trash. However, if I were to bet, I'd bet this is
*not* your problem.

I haven't read the rest of the email list yet and I'll bet there are a
lot of suggestions for you there by this time. I'd have typically taken
mine off-list to you and let you publish the resolution once, however
apparently, that is poor list etiquette. I'd like to know what the
resolution is, I occasionally have a sort of similar problem on an old
antenna that's been up for maybe 15 years.

Re: [Elecraft] Openness on the reflector

2012-06-04 Thread David Gilbert

Some people are more reserved than others and prefer private exchanges
to public broadcasts. Just ask yourself how many people are willing to
stand up at a public gathering and voice their opinion. It's a matter
of human nature, not "openness on the reflector". You're making it
sound like some ulterior motive when it isn't.

Besides, as someone else just pointed out it's entirely possible for
somebody to hit the "Reply" button on their email client instead of the
"Reply List" button without really paying attention. It's a very common
happening.

But most importantly, I've been a K3 owner for over three years (a K1
owner for much longer than that) and I can't think of ANY problem (some
of which I have complained about) with the rig that hasn't received full
and repeated discussion on this reflector from both users and Elecraft.
   I honestly haven't a clue what you're talking about. If you're so
focused on "full disclosure", how about offering a few specifics so we
know what you're talking about instead of making such vague allegations.

By the way, this normally would have been a private reply but since you
asked ...

If I remember correctly, microHAM specifically advises *against* connecting
like that and doing updates through the microHAM device. It would seem
prudent to disconnect your microHAM device and directly connect your P3/K3
combination and effect updates in that manner.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] N3FJP rig control settings?

2012-06-04 Thread Arthur Burke
Agree all the way. For daily logging and superb tracking (there are gobs of
awards that can be tracked and user-defined fields if you need even more),
I also have used DXLabs for quite some time (five or six years). There *is*
somewhat of a learning curve. The author of the suite (who also co-hosts an
excellent forum) recommends learning a specific piece, then learning
another one and so forth.

If you're only interested in single-op situations, N1MM is also free and is
pretty easy to set up. If you want to get involved in multi-rig or multi-op
situations, it can be somewhat more complex. In either case, the N1MM forum
has participation from the authors and is very, very well supported.

[Elecraft] KX1 ant. and cntpse. ques.

2012-06-04 Thread John Flynn
Good Day Everyone,

I was noodling around some KX1 topics on Nabble and found this posting by
W2XS from 7/08:

"For 40, 30, and 20 meters, I use a 42-foot wire with a large nut on the
end. The wire is thrown over a tree branch. A Pomona BNC-to-Bindng Posts
adaptor is used. Three counterpoise wires cut to one quarter wave for each
band (approx. 33', 23', and 16.5') are connected to the ground binding
post."

My question is whether *all three* counterpoises are attached to the
binding post *at once*, or is he talking about changing the out the
counterpoise as he changes bands? I've been using a one-size-fits-all
counterpoise and was wondering if I've missed something basic and very
useful.

Thx es 73

[Elecraft] Listening on k3 subreceiver while transmitting

Yes, you can, but you will only be able to hear the other stations if you are on
CW using QSK. It won't work on phone, because both RX's will mute when the rig
is keyed in the voice and digital modes.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 mac software and digital interfaces

2012-06-04 Thread W4ATK
I would not overlook the Navigator interface for use with the K3. In my opinion
it is a bit more user friendly than some of the other interfaces and with six
USB/Serial ports you will be done with that problem (CAT, PTT, WKey, FSK, An
auxiliary RS232 port) and one of the quietest USB Codecs for those sound card
apps I have ever seen. That being said i run MacLogger DX as a logger program,
Fldigi for my PSK31, RTTY etc, Flwkey for CW, Flrig for station control. I use
CrossOver and run JT65-HF and other ".exe"s I cannot do without. You will love
coin' it with a Mac.

Ron -

I use RUMLog and cocoaModem on my Mac. RUMLog can use the RS-232
interface to read the frequency from the K3. cocoaModem has been
a workhorse for my on PSK-31 (90% of my operating time after FM
repeater & SSB.)

My general PSK operating mode is to set the K3 to the base
frequency for the PSK sub-band and lock the VFO (hold LOCK).
When I start a QSO, I narrow the bandwidth of the radio to
150-250 Hz using the Lo and Hi knobs. When I end the QSO, I have
a macro to open the bandwidth to 2.3 KHz to fill my 2 KHz
waterfall. I use the RF gain knob to control over-driving the
Signalink interface. I use a Signalink because I have a MacBook
Pro which can only do audio one way at a time.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - K3 Comparison Question

2012-06-04 Thread Gary D Krause
Hi Paul,

I own the K2 and K3. Like you, I'm not a contester. I actually prefer the
sound of the K2 on CW. To me it sounds warmer and smoother. The tone of the
K3 isn't bad and if I didn't have a K2 to compare it to, I probably wouldn't
notice. The K3 sounds a little rough or raspy to me as compared with my K2.

[Elecraft] K2 hook-up to an ALS-600 amp

2012-06-04 Thread TI2/NA7U
If anyone has used an ALS-600 with their K2 I'd like to hear any tips you may
have.

I have a K2 with the PA/ATU outboard in separate enclosure that I want to
use to drive the amp. Is there nothing more to do than to install a cable
from the K2/100 PA KEY OUT to the ALS-600's RELAY jack (and RF OUT to RF IN,
of course)? I've read that at least with the K3 hooking up ALC is not needed
(of course, I have to take care not to use too much drive from the K2).

I have parts on order for the AD5X QSK mod, but they probably won't be here
for quite a while. What would you recommend that I set the QSK delay to in
the K2 to avoid switching while hot? I don't mind giving up fast QSK for the
time being.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 mac software and digital interfaces

2012-06-04 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

If you're using a Mac, look at MacLoggerDX, Aether or RUMLog for
logging and cocoaModem for digital modes. That suite of software
(cocoaModem works well with either MLDX or RUMLog) functions quite
well with nothing more than an iMic sound card (so Operating system
sounds do not reach the radio) and a basic USB to serial converter.

If you want everything in one box, look at microHAM USB Interface III
(which works as standard USB sound card and serial converter under
OS-X). While other interfaces provide additional capabilities, the
USB III provides everything needed for the vast majority of Mac
users.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 hook-up to an ALS-600 amp

2012-06-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Casey,

Changing the T-R delay in the K2 will not eliminate hot switching. The
time between the KeyOut going low and the onset of RF is close to 8 ms.
and is not adjustable.

So, yes, you will need that AD5X mod.

What the T-R delay in the K2 menu does is delay the transition from
transmit to receive. That can be used to prevent amplifier relay
clacking on CW, but you will not have full QSK.

I would suggest you activate the amplifier relay with a foot switch (or
other manual switch) in the meantime. The amp relay should connect the
K2 directly to the antenna if you forget the foot switch, so no harm
should come from operation like that.

Re: [Elecraft] Openness on the reflector

2012-06-04 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I have always looked at a post on this reflector as a comment made among a
group of friendly, polite Hams just as one might make at a Ham club meeting.

One of the big advantages of posting on the reflector is similar to
advantage of discussing a subject with a bunch of like-minded Hams at a club
meeting: learning. Listening to others responses, being corrected politely
and clearly when we make mistakes, and hashing out many opinions on issues
is a huge opportunity to gain insights and to learn things.

People are not always polite on the reflector, just as they aren't in
person. We all have bad days. We all sometimes say something we later
realize wasn't "heard" in the right way. And there are a few - very, very
few IMX - who are just impolite people, Hi! But, IMX, some of the most
memorable and pleasurable acquaintances I've had in my lifetime were with
people who were downright rude when we first met.

I think that experiencing someone's "rough" side from time to time is a very
small price to pay to gather the community of thought, information and
experiences about an issue that public exchange provides.

73,

Ron AC7AC

-Original Message-

Some people are more reserved than others and prefer private exchanges to
public broadcasts. Just ask yourself how many people are willing to stand
up at a public gathering and voice their opinion. It's a matter of human
nature, not "openness on the reflector". You're making it sound like some
ulterior motive when it isn't.

Besides, as someone else just pointed out it's entirely possible for
somebody to hit the "Reply" button on their email client instead of the
"Reply List" button without really paying attention. It's a very common
happening.

But most importantly, I've been a K3 owner for over three years (a K1 owner
for much longer than that) and I can't think of ANY problem (some of which I
have complained about) with the rig that hasn't received full and repeated
discussion on this reflector from both users and Elecraft.
   I honestly haven't a clue what you're talking about. If you're so
focused on "full disclosure", how about offering a few specifics so we know
what you're talking about instead of making such vague allegations.

By the way, this normally would have been a private reply but since you
asked ...

[Elecraft] KX1 ATU causes power to drop off...

2012-06-04 Thread ke9uw
I just finished the KX1 kit and without the tuner, power output into a 50 ohm
load is about 10W on 80M, and 4W on 40M, 30M, and 20M using a Bird meter,
50W slug.
However the ATU which seems to work well in all testing, all the relays
click, etc., in TUNE the power starts out at a reading of about 3 watts (40,
30, 20...a watt higher on 80) and falls off in about 2 to 3 seconds to about
.5 watts. The Bird meter shows exactly the same power fall off.
Also the SWR reading in all cases reads 1.0 using the dummy load. So it
seems like something is heating up (don't feel any heat anywhere) and the
power falls off...but it still always reads an SWR of 1.0 when I go out of
TUNE.
When I remove the ATU and install the jumper the power is steady for all
bands (just higher on 80M).

When I activate L0 thru L3 and C1 thru C3, I get a significant change
(normal) in SWR cycling thru L0 thru L3, but cycling thru C1 thru C3, the
SWR seems to just change from 2.0 to 2.1 to 2.0

Not sure what to look at...

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] N3FJP rig control settings?

2012-06-04 Thread Jim Lowman
Thanks to everyone who took the time to post some positive thoughts
on the N3FJP software suite.

I see that I should have added some parameters initially. I'm a casual
operator and
contester due to using QRP power levels for the most part, and simple
antennas.
About the only time that I operate with a group is Field Day, so I can
find out what
logging software that the group uses in advance and be sure that I know
how to use
it.

I also don't do spotting - DX or otherwise. That seemed to be the only
limitation that
I saw mentioned.

Oh and the ATU is in the CAL (bypass) mode. Of course it is in the TUN mode
for the testing of inserting different L and C elements and noting SWR
changes to see that all the elements are working.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 ATU causes power to drop off...

2012-06-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Chuck,

Look at the Low Pass Filter.
The PA transistor cannot really go to 10 watts output - I suspect the
relay on the LPF board is not being activated on 80 meters and is
allowing a low of 2nd and 3rd harmonic energy get through. A 'scope
would show that, but for some reason or another, that makes the 80 meter
output look like 10 watts of power on a wattmeter.

Once you get the Low Pass Filter working correctly on all bands, try the
KXAT1 again and if the power falls off - I don't think that is a related
problem.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 ATU causes power to drop off...

2012-06-04 Thread hawley, charles j jr
I bypassed the tuner relays, but makes no difference. I left the one turn link
in ckt.
I thought maybe maybe the tuner being in place was affecting the drive rf into
the output xistor,
but it looks like the same rf drive on the scope with the tuner in or out...but
not the same output rf because the
rf into the tuner does just what the rf does on the output of the
tuner...drifts down to a smaller level.
Baffled...

[Elecraft] Live Video Stream of KX3 Kit Build

2012-06-04 Thread Thomas Campie
I received notification today that my KX3 is on the way so I wanted to
alert/remind you that I will be streaming the build of my KX3 LIVE when it
arrives. I think it should be Wednesday or Thursday, won't know until the USPS
site updates. I'll commence the build at about 20:00z (3 PM central time) and
proceed until complete. You will be able to view the build here:
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/w0ea-s-kx3-kit-build

Of course I'll send an update when I am sure what day and time the stream will
start.

I'm going to try to find a way to make it so that you can tell what page of the
build instructions I am on in case you want to follow along. If all else fails
I can just have a running commentary. There is a mechanism for chat while
watching the video so I will be able to answer questions that way as well. I
am also on Google Talk (tom.cam...@gmail.com) and twitter @w0ea.

Keep an eye out for an update!

[Elecraft] KX3 Delivered

2012-06-04 Thread Dave Agsten
I received KX3-F, serial number 0298 today. I ordered on the 28th at 1644Z.

I'm posting this to comment on shipping methods for Elecraft products. When I
ordered my KPA500 I designated UPS Ground as the preferred shipping method. I
received it 7 days after it was shipped by Elecraft. This time I changed my
shipping preference to USPS Priority Mail. Elecraft delivered my KX3 to the
U.S. Postal service on Friday afternoon, West Coast time, June 1st. I received
the package, in Virginia, today, the 4th. I don't live in a large metro area
and am somewhat out in the country, serviced by a small Post Office.  I think
that was great service by the USPS.

I just wanted to let folks know that Priority Mail is a way to receive your
package a few days sooner than via UPS Ground. (at least when it goes from West
Coast to the East Coast) It was a few bucks more but no where near the premium
you pay for "faster" UPS service.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 ATU causes power to drop off...

2012-06-04 Thread hawley, charles j jr
Yes. E was not going low and F not turning on the relay.
The power out on 80M is 4 watts now. The other bands
are around 3.6 to 3.8 watts.
I still have the tuner in reduces the power out on
all bands and drops to less than a watt.
When I push on the LPF board, the power goes down...
and the ATU does that with a relay.
So that's my problem. I'll check why.
Thankyou so much, I would have been going in circles without
the LPF relay tip.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 ATU causes power to drop off...

2012-06-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Chuck,

That is progress, but for the life of me, I cannot think of any way the
KXAT1 would cause the power to gradually decrease. It is getting late
for me today, so I will sleep on it and see if anything pops into my
head in the morning.

One thought that does occur to me is that there may be a bad solder
connection somewhere in the KXAT1.

Terry-
I have been using ACLog with my k3 for a couple of years now and have no
problem with it. When I click on a dx spot it goes right to the freq.
These are my setting:
com port 1
Baud Rate 38.4
Parity-DTR
Radio Polling rate 500ms
I am using verison 3.0 on ACLog. I did not know they had an upgrade
out. But will go and download it soon.
Hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 ATU causes power to drop off...

2012-06-04 Thread hawley, charles j jr
Fixed.
It was a solder connection on the low pass filter board. When the ATU
pushed a bit on the LPF board, the power took a dip.
I re-soldered the two 2-3 junctions on the LPF.
The power is constant now, about 3.6 or so on 7 thru 14
and about 4.1 on 80M with the tuner in or out.
It was all in the LPF board...both issues. I was really
careful with that part...but not careful enough :)
Thanks again.

You have it right.

In normal use the microHAM unit is in-between the PC and the K3 or if
there is a P3 it is PC - P3 - K3. BUT when having to do FW update to
the P3 or K3 or screen capture off the P3 the PC needs to be connected
directly to the P3 or K3.

If I remember correctly, microHAM specifically advises *against*
connecting like that and doing updates through the microHAM device. It
would seem prudent to disconnect your microHAM device and directly
connect your P3/K3 combination and effect updates in that manner.

The big cable that you plugged into the back of the microKeyer with all
the
seperate leads you hooked up to the K3 - one of which is the serial
interface (RS232). Now the communication between the PC and K3 is via
the
microKeyer. Works fine but for one task...FW updates.

Be sure to note in the manual about not trying to do any firmware
updates in
this configuration. You MUST plug the K3 directly into the PC for these
updates. Believe me, as the manual says, it does NOT work with the
microKeyer in the middle.

All information is pretty clear in the MicroHam manual.

Chuck,

That LPF is the most common downfall of the KXB3080 installation. It is
small and quite compact, and does require a lot of careful work.

I am glad to hear your KX1 is now working OK.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 + P3 + Microkeyer

2012-06-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
An RS-232 A/B switch can make that changeover easy - the common of the
A/B switch connects to the K3 (or P3) and one side connects to the
nicroHam while the other side connects directly to a serial port (or USB
to serial adapter). A simple "flip of the switch" changes it from
normal configuration to Firmware download mode.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 Cheat sheets

2012-06-04 Thread Matt Maguire
Hi Niel,

I'm curious, what sort of information would you expect to see on a cheat sheet
for the KX3?

I have to say, I find the KX3 user interface very well designed, intuitive and
easy to use (once you understand the whole tap vs hold philosophy).

I can certainly see the sense in a cheat sheet for some of the other
menu-driven radios on the market, where it is more difficult to remember
exactly which menu you need to dive into in order to adjust something.

[Elecraft] K3 failure

thing I know, the transmit light just keeps on flashing the dial lights
went out and I can see mcu ld faintly I cannot turn the

K3 off with its power switch I think I nearly had a heart attack. I have
attempted to find that fault in the manual, and cannot seem to find an
error that matches my fault.

fault before

Re: [Elecraft] K3 failure

2012-06-04 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Alan,

Sounds like the firmware upgrade didn't take--possibly due to a
brownout--and has to be retried.

First get out of KX3 Utility and power the PC off/on, in case there's
an issue with the serial ports.

Next, unplug the K3, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in. If the
firmware has to be reloaded, you'll see "MCU LD" on VFO B and one LED
will flash. At this point try running KX3 Utility again; it should
load the new firmware.

If this doesn't help, send as much detail as you can to k3support.

I do it that way myself ... each K3 (+P3) has an RS-232 A/B switch on
it. The computer serial port has an A/B/C/D switch that connects to
each of the A/B switches, the programming cable for the XG3 and for
now the LP-100 (but normally my general purpose test port).
