John,
as I already comment directly to you - what is important for me is to
know if this delay is also in VOX-off situation. I hope not, only want
to be sure. If VOX-on and semi-BK then I understand and expect such
delay, if VOX-on and full-BK (QSK) there will be also some delay
probably but related to QSK delay which is not important.
So can anybody confirm behaviour (presence of any delay) vhen VOX-off
and XMIT activated/deactivated?

Thanks and 73!

I really like the new ability to set the power during tuning. But, I
notice
there is no sidetone to remind you that you are transmitting. Shouldn't
there be? What think you?

This is great. The TS-2000, which is widely used by WSJT enthusiasts on VHF,
doesn't have this capability, as it has no special "DATA" mode or any other
way of memorizing all these configurational differences. You have to
manually
change all this stuff ( six or so settings) every time you go from WSJT to
SSB
to WSJT again.

I'm really looking forward to getting my K3 for so MANY reasons! Now here is
another one I didn't know about... April can't come soon enough!

When I work DX, I like to listen to VFO B and VFO A at the same time,
but at different volume levels. I want to hear the DX call me on VFO A and
I like to find an open spot on VFO B where everyone is calling the DX
station.
Can I do that with my K3? I don't see any obvious way, other than the
not-yet-released Sub Receiver/ Maybe I missed that part of the Owners

Perfect! Guess I missed that little tidbit in the manual!
Works great too. I have now changed my message to include
the "IM" prosign, and it cuts off instantly--doesn't even
seem like 1 second--more like a few milliseconds.
Previously I had been manually hitting the "XMIT" button to
override the delay. Too bad it doesn't work on CW, as I
also have a "CQ" message. Although I'm not typically a
"CQer", but I've found that when the band is quiet
(particularly 30 meters) calling CQ can liven things up now
and then!

Thanks for the tip Wayne. Have you thought about having an
"operating hints" class for K3 owners? ( : Maybe at Dayton
over wine and cheese!

I was hoping that Equalization Memories will be
available in the future.
I'm using headset connected to the front of the radio
and studio MIC on the back.

With my set up it is not practical to use K3 EQ.

I am not sure if there is an obscure problem after the latest MCU
and DSP update. Maybe others could check and see if it happens to
them ?

Any band on SSB if I have the DSP set to ALT1 with the Low Cut set
at 0.15 Hz , then after going onto transmit the receiver appears
to be dead. If I set the DSP to NORM by pressing the knob the
receiver suddenly bursts into life...
This happens whether there is any transmit audio or RF out.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Multi-Band antenna thoughts

2008-03-11 Thread AB7R
Mike,

I recently put up a 240ft doublet fed with 600 ohm open wire feeder. The
feedline is "about" 200 ft long. It terminates in the Elecraft BL2 balun
set for 4:1 and it tunes all bands 160-6M on the K3.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Multi-Band antenna thoughts

I am considering building a multi-band doublet fed with ladder line to the
window and then 10-12 feet of coax to the K3 from the window interface. I
would let the K3 ATU tune the beast. I have been playing with a coax
calculator and with low loss coax and 10:1 SWR the losses in the short run
of coax up to 30MHz are manageable to ½ dB. The ladder line can handle the
mismatch with small losses. I was thinking of putting a sleeve balun at the
window interface from the coax to ladder line. I could of course put two
different length doublets in parallel at the feed point if that would tame
problem bands. I don’t need this antenna to go to 50 MHz as I will have a
separate antenna for 6M. I don’t have antenna modeling software. I know I
will have pattern issues if I try to push a long antenna too high in
frequency. I am not thinking right now of pushing this antenna to 160M.

So now the questions:

1. Is there a magic doublet antenna length that will end up with less than
10:1 SWR on the most bands? I know Cebik likes 88 feet or 44 feet depending
on lowest operating band but I don’t know that he has solved my exact
problem for 10:1 SWR or less on all bands.
2. Is there a magic feed line length to make this all work?
3. Have any of you tried something similar to this with the K3 ATU? I have
read the reports of just tuning up any old antenna that you have and you get
it to work at some unknown efficiency. I have done this too.

I know it is time for me to bite the bullet and purchase some real antennal
modeling tools.

RE: [Elecraft] OT: the value of "accurate measures" for ham radio

2008-03-16 Thread AB7R
Performing the TX Gain calibration is setting the gain constants for the MCU
by each band. Once for the LPA at 5W and once for the KPA3 at 50W. When
doing the calibration if you do not get an error message such as ERR TXG,
then you're good. If there's a problem, you will see that error message.

Doug, the issue is not attaining lab-grade accuracy with the K3. The issue
is in understanding why some of us running out of calibration range in
approximately the same amounts. As Greg just addressed, it's on their
priority list.

The other issue relates to my previous post: It would be nice to have a
better understanding of the RF Level Calibration procedure so we know the
alignment has been conducted correctly.

RE: [Elecraft] wattmeter calibration

2008-03-16 Thread AB7R
Mike,

Did you follow the steps on page 46?

You have to set the KXV3 menu to TEST and connect an RF Volt meter to the TX
OUT BNC on the KXV3. Set power to 1 milliwat (0 dbm) and adjust WMTR for
.224 Vrms on the external meter.

For the record - I can't get it to work either. If I calibrate the wattmeter
to 5 Watts on 20m it is quite a long way out on several other bands -
ranging from about 3W to about 7W. I am comparing it with an HP8484A so that
might be an issue as it is a microwave head, but I think it goes down to
below 10MHz.

I also completely failed to calibrate the transverter output. This outputs
3mW but the power meter can not see it at all. More worryingly, it always
outputs 3mW regardless of the power setting. If I set the ALC off, then I
can adjust it via the gain setting . It appears there is something amiss
with power measurement.

Sorry, that isn't what I was suggesting.

As far as I can tell, the SUB button is completely dead until the KRX3
is installed. My suggestion was to put that wasted button to use in
radios that don't have the KRX3, by making *both* SUB and REV do exactly
the same.

The difference between the two buttons is their location. REV is good
for two-handed tuning, but as Paul identified, a convenient one-handed
'hold to reverse' function is vital for radios that don't have a second
receiver. The SUB button would add that convenience.

When the KRX3 is installed, the SUB button has to go back to its labeled
function - and that's fine too, because the 'hold to reverse' function
is hardly needed at all (the FT-1000 doesn't even have it).

Swapping SUB and REV is a totally different issue... and I can't see
much reason for wanting that.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY Com port issue

2008-04-06 Thread AB7R
Hi Jamie,

You can use the RS232 for rig control, and PTT/CW if you set it up
correctly. But you cannot use it for FSK. To key FSk you must build a
simple interface from a COM port to the ACCY connector. Se the AA5AU RTTY
website for the interface. Its a simple transistor and resistor...thats it.
For AFSK, All you need is the RS232 port for rig control and PTT.

that I haven't seen answered here -

To run RTTY with MMTTY requires use of the one Com port on the radio unless
you choose to use VOX control. This works quite well until something like an
APRS burst kicks in and sends the transceiver into transmit ! If you run a
logging program - mine is LoGic 8 - it uses the Com port to control the
radio or just put in the frequency information when you make a contact.
Running BOTH programs takes 2 com ports. Now, if I use a program like MixW,
this CAN use one Com port is you stay with AFSK. I have not yet run a cable
for FSK to a separate Com port.

Is there any slick way to avoid the Com port conflict ?

I DO plan on upgrading my interface situation with a microHAM device, so
this is probably an academic question. I would just like to hear what others
have figured out ! :)

Well, either way, the good news is that the K3 will be able to do both!  :)

I didn't suggest it was different. I was suggesting that it was easier
to tune because, as Bob said in his reply, you can fine-tune by
clicking on the waterfall display which adjusts the mark-space tones,
instead of having to take your hands off the keyboard or mouse and
twiddle the receiver knob.

Greg makes a fair point about FSK potentially being cleaner, but I
would be interested to know if that is really the case. Certainly if
the audio was overdriving the transmitter you could radiate a dirty
signal, but if the system is properly set up would there be a
noticeable difference?

With FSK there might be the possibility of clicks or artefacts
occurring during the change between mark and space. A
software-produced AFSK could ensure that the transitions occur when
the wave passes through zero, which would result in a cleaner signal,
surely?

Whether that's true or not, I would have thought the usability
benefits of the AFSK method, especially in a contest situation, would
outweigh any theoretical advantages of FSK, which are probably
undetectable on the air, even if they are measurable.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: K3: S-meter calibration (redux)

2007-06-07 Thread ab7r
The good new Toby is that for folks who are strictly concerned about a "norm"
is that you
can calibrate it to whatever norm you wish. I think that's the whole point
here. Not
everyone is so concerned about an exact norm nor does everyone use their
S-meter when giving
a signal reportI sure don'tto me it's how I hear the signal on the
radio. If I need
to make a comparison between two or more signals then I might use the S-meter.

So don't fret...and adjust away to suit your needs.

Neither case is correct. The FM filter is actually a 7-pole filter. This is

Hi Franki and thanks for the email.

I'm not sure about the first part of your question, will have to let Eric field
that one, but I believe the answer is yes.

In order to use the RX in/out you will need the KXV3 option. This provides the
RX
only connections as well as the in/out for transverter interfacing. I think
it's
only around $79 for that option.

Welcome to the Elecraft group!

Not talking about visual vs. audio...the point is you don't NEED a computer.
If someone

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB

If Elecraft does not list a 1.8 kHz option in their selection of roofing
filters
there's a possibility that INRAD will. But please remember you are talking
apples
and oranges when comparing the filtering between the 1000D and a K3. That 2.1
kHz
option IS a roofing filter and then you can narrow the final bandwidth using
the
DSP HI/LO- cut controls as narrow as you need to.

Yes. You can use either mic port, but not both. There is a menu setting to
choose the mic source, front panel or rear panel.

I have been looking at the microphone jack on the rear of the rig. Would
this give one the ability to use a standard computer headset in place of a
standard microphone plugged into the front of the rig?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Questions

2007-06-27 Thread ab7r
Matthew,

This is covered well in the FAQ. But for a short answer, yes. Withe the
optional
DVR installed, a portion of the available space for recording is reserved for
audio
feedback for just such cases. I believe this is still being tested so I am not
sure exactly which control items will give audio feedback, but certainly
frequency
and mode. Probably which XFIL is selected as well. I'm sure there's more, but
I
don't have the exact info yet. When a final list is available, I will post it
on
the FAQ page.

Thanks.

Gus,

Of the four knobs to the left of the main tuning knob, the lower right one
has a HOLD function of MON (Monitor). This adjusts both the sidetone level

I didn't see anything in the K3 FAQ regarding the way CW sidetone and
phone transmit audio monitor levels are controlled. Some rigs allow
setting a monitor level that is independent of the receive audio level.
Others allow setting a base monitor level that is then altered by the
receive audio level setting.

Each method has benefits and drawbacks, but I prefer being able to set
TX monitor levels independently to avoid accidentally blasting my ears
in the headphones. Which method is used in the K3? Or is this a
configurable option like almost everything else on the K3?

Yes, all the options, including the KPA3, are user installable. After

Re: [Elecraft] K3/10 and 100

2007-07-03 Thread ab7r
Tom,

All the PSK QSOs so far have been at 3-4 watts.

A nice feature for PSK is having the focus displayed when you adjust the SHIFT
control. So if on your software you have a signal at 1000 Hz, you adjust the
shift
control to 1.0 and narrow down the filter and you get nothing but that signal
(50-
Hz filter setting). If the band is VERY crowded and there's someone right next
to
the signal you're copying, you can adjust the shift a little more and/or use
the
manual notch.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Question

Goody,

A TS-850 is one of the rigs I have not owned, so cannot make a definitive
comparison. Butget it with the stock filter. If you feel you need more
help with the stronger signals, then get the narrower roofing filter. Or if
they're available by then, one of the variable BW roofing filters.

Greetings. I've read through the FAQ and have one question which may
sound basic and silly, and I hesitate to ask. With the stock roofing
filter and the DSP functions, can I expect comparable or better CW
performance to what I have with my Kenwood 850 with a 500 Hz crystal
filter? I want to get a K3 badly, but I don't want to fork out the
extra dollars up front for a 250 Hz or 500 Hz roofing filter.
(Certainly later I will get one of these and perhaps a 6 kHz filter for
listening to AM.)

My guess answer to this question would be yes, but I haven't had the
opportunity to see a K3 in action.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Question

2007-07-05 Thread AB7R
Keep in mind however that to really realize the K3's potential when
operating CW you really should have either the 500, 400, 250 or 200 Hz
filters installed, depending on your operating preferences. With this
installed, you will be way ahead of the 850's performance, as well as just
about every other rig (if not all).final number not "quite" ready yet.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: K3 - Which filters to get?

2007-07-19 Thread ab7r
The filters are working great! After receiving my beta rig I did alot of
listening
during the first contest I could find. Hearing weak CW sigs with nearby sigs
at
+30 and +40 2 kHz away was no problem...even with closer spacing there was no
problem.

I presently have 400 Hz, 1.0 kHz, 2.8 kHz and a 6 kHz. I will also have a 200
Hz
filter installed which will be great for CW and digital modes. What I really
like
is being able to only turn on the filters for a particular mode that I want to
use. Its easy to setupso I activate the 1 kHz and 400 Hz filters for CW
and
DATA modes and the 2.8 and 6 kHz for SSB. When adjusting the WIDTH control,
the
active roofing filters will will automaticlly be selected as soon as you cross
its
threshsold. So if I am on CW and listening with a wide BW...say 800 Hz, the
1kHz
will be in line. Rotating the knob down to 400 Hz or below will switch to the
400
Hz filter. No need to do anything else. But..if you want, you CAN manually
select
another filter and the DSP BW will normalize to match that BW.

Another neat filtering option is the I/II toggle. I keep a filter profile set
up
as wide in the I bank and narrow in the II bank. So instead of having to make
manual adjustments, I can just use that HOLD feature to toggle between the two
setting.

For casual operating.you "can" suffice with the supplied 2.7 kHz filter and
use
the DSP for the final BW. But you are not going to get the most out of the
K3's
capabilities by doing so.

Look...you're getting a top of the line receiever here. And if you are getting
one, I suspect at SOME time you will dabble in at least a contest or two or
some
DXingeven with casual operating you are at times going to come up against
some
strong nearby signals. You WILL want the tools available to deal with them
effectively. If you work CWI really recommend at least the 400 or 500 Hz
filter options. If you are doing allot of contesting...get one even
narrower...and
it will suit your digital mode needs as well.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 and K3... oh which one to pick

2007-08-09 Thread ab7r
The K3 RX specs are better than the K2 and most other radios in just about
every
category. The optional filters are roofing filters to control what is passed
to
the IF and AF DSP. The ultimate BW is based on adjusting the WIDTH
control...making it much more flexible in determining BW than the K2.

[Elecraft] KX3 screen protection

2015-08-11 Thread ab7r
Thought of this when replying to an eHam post. Has anyone tried using a
tablet/cell phone screen protector on the Plexiglas screen cover to keep it
from being scratched when hiking or camping? Seems like one tablet screen
protector should give you a few applications if necessary.

yes...and the side panels with folding cover are great too. I was not
referring to transport though...just a little extra protection when operating
in the field (stumps, bouldersetc. :) )

Except you may have to clean off the 'sticky goop' from the tape.
I would think sliding the KX3 into an old sock or something similar
would provide adequate protection while transporting it.

It's simple.for Rob a radio is not all about the numbers. You have to

Note that I own a K3, a K3S, a KPA500 a KAT500 and the BC342N I got my start
with 60 years ago. I'm generally pleased with them all.

I did own an Icom IC-211 once. After fixing it more times that I can remember
I
gave it to a friend who also had one. I often said that it was a measure of
his
character that I gave him that radio and yet we remained friends. So, I've
never been a fan of Icom. That said, if Rob Sherwood's QRZ page is up to date,
the guy whose words are gospel to the Elecraft (dare I say Koolaid
drinkers...nah) crowd, has Kenwood, Icon and Flex radios in his shack. Not an
Elecraft in sight.

I don't know what that means...just an observation.

Re: [Elecraft] MMTTY not keying transmitter

2015-12-10 Thread ab7r
If I recall with the Navigator there is a file that must be in the MMttY folder
for EXtFSK. Use the one supplied by Navigator. then in the COM port window to
select the keying port you select EXtFSK. Its been awhile :)

then I think a small control window opens to select the COM port for extfsk to
use. Use the com port Navigator created for FSK.

make sure you have FSK-D selected as the DATA sub mode. Pay attention,
it's a per band setting.

This is fantastic Dave and a groundbreaking development in rig

I NEED one of these.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500/KAT500 with Icom ic-7300

2016-12-26 Thread ab7r

A little more background   with the Rf sensing the problem only presented
itself when a band change required the tuner to change antennas.  so during a
very quick keydown on the new band the amp keys before the tuner switches
antennas and therefore faults due to high SWR.  if im not mistaken the PTT line
between the tuner and amp stays high during a tune but not during an antenna
change?  otherwise the amp would not key until the tuner changed antennas.

Has anyone successfully run this combination? I have tried rf sensing
and get a fault on the amp,or the tuner locks up.  tried using the Icom
band data to the amp, using the elecraft aux cable between the tuner and
the amp, and any combination of the above. It appears not to be mode
dependant. I am driving the icom with 30% power. The power level does
not appear to matter. The tuner/amp combination has been working
successfully with my previous radio (brand Y).  There appears to me to

Hi Fred.  thats the way it is.  7300 to the top RCA on the tuner and the bottom
RCA to the amp.

Hi,
You need the keying line to go from the Icom first to the tuner and then back
to the amplifier.

A little more background   with the Rf sensing the problem only presented
itself when a band change required the tuner to change antennas.  so during a
very quick keydown on the new band the amp keys before the tuner switches
antennas and therefore faults
due to high SWR.  if im not mistaken the PTT line between the tuner and amp
stays high during a tune but not during an antenna change?  otherwise the amp
would not key until the tuner changed antennas.

Has anyone successfully run this combination? I have tried rf sensing

and get a fault on the amp,or the tuner locks up.  tried using the Icom

band data to the amp, using the elecraft aux cable between the tuner and

the amp, and any combination of the above. It appears not to be mode

dependant. I am driving the icom with 30% power. The power level does

not appear to matter. The tuner/amp combination has been working

successfully with my previous radio (brand Y).  There appears to me to

be an issue of the amp keying at the same time the tuner is switching

bands.

Both amp And tuner have latest firmware. Cables are from the elecraft

manuals, or Elecraft.

I'll put it this way: the BY-1 is *only* good if you have a light
touch! The Hex Key will work fine either way.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 shipping end August ??

2007-08-29 Thread ab7r
Just one of many changes is that there are now 10 programable keys. Two have
their
on label on the front panel (hold functions of the RIT and XIT buttons) and
then
you can also program the M1-4 buttons as a PFx in both TAP and HOLD, that gives
you
8 more PFx functions for a total of 10. When you want to use any of the M1-4
buttons for messages, you record your message in the normal way and it reverts
back to that function.

Another great update is when operating FSK from the CW key when not connected
to a
computer. Now you can use your CW messages you programmed into the M1-4
buttons
and the K3 will convert them to FSK.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Desk Mic

2007-08-30 Thread ab7r
Not sure if there will be a desk mic. But one of the great things is you
should be able to
adapt just about any mic to the K3. There is switchable bias available on both
the front panel
as well as the rear panel and plenty of mic gain available if you need it.
There's also the
mic TX EQ so you can tailor the sound.

I use a PR40 into the rear mic connector and get great audio reports.

BTW...forgot to mentionYou do not need to use any type of jumpers for
turning the bias on
or off. You simply bring up the MIC SEL menu item and TAP the 1 button to
toggle the bias.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Internal Digital Modes

2007-09-17 Thread ab7r
Just to reinforce this, I now only use software for RTTY if I absolutely have
to (mainly
for contesting). I find it so much easier to use my paddles and the K3's
decoder. You can
even do this for "casual" contesting using the CW Messages M1-4.
An added benefit from this is by getting use to sending RTTY and PSK with your
paddles it
makes you better at sending CW. Since you can see what you are sending, you
can tell if
you left just a little too much space between letters, so it helps with your
timing.

When working 3B7C last week (I need him again cuz they don't have me in their
log!!!) I had
the CW decoder on. He was an S1-2 and be adjusting the Threshold setting
(there's an auto-
threshold option now too) and using a narrow BW filter in the DSP I was able to
get about
80-90% print on the decoder (there was some QSB to deal with).

Very Fun Stuff!

TX ONLY
TWO SPEED RANGES
WPM CHECK

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Audio, SSB and CW.

2007-09-18 Thread ab7r
Fred,

The K3 has a menu option to toggle additional AF gain. Options are LO/HI.
Based on our
testing the HI should be more than enough audio. I'm a bit hard of hearing as
well and
also have bad tenitis all the time thanks to jets taking off and landing right
above me
all the time while on active duty. :) I keep the K3 in the LO setting most of

time. If I get in a situation where I need more, I just set it to HI.

There are two EQs in the MAIN menu. One for RX and one for TX, both are 8-band
EQs and
are standard K3 features.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 2.7 k Filter vs. 2.8 k

2007-09-18 Thread ab7r
The following cut is from the K3 FAQ - Elecraft on Roofing Filters.

"In order to achieve a K3 blocking dynamic range (desense) in the 140 dB+
range,
you -must- use a narrow crystal filter (400 Hz for closer interfering signal
spacing) in front of the DSP. We use hardware AGC after the narrow crystal
filter
and ahead of the DSP to protect the DSP when signals inside the crystal filter
exceed a 100 dB dynamic range. If you only use the 2.7 kHz stock filter for CW
or
data operation you will be significantly desensed once signals within that
filter's
bandwidth exceed about S9+25. This is before phase noise from the transmitting
station becomes a factor. Not uncommon on 40M at night, during a contest or at
a
multi-op station -- Or every day in major cities. Changing to a 400-500 Hz
filter
reduces blocking from signals 1-5 kHz away. I've personally confirmed this on
the
air with my K3 and the other commercial rigs we have here. when I've operated
with
the K3, or another DSP rig, on CW without using a narrow 400-500 Hz filter
ahead of
the DSP filtering, I frequently experienced desense (BDR) from nearby signals.
Putting in the narrower crystal filter immediately cleaned it up. Using narrow
crystal filters ahead of the DSP also reduces AGC pumping from static crashes
on
80/160M etc.

This was from Eric's portion of the article.

An easier way to do this is to Hold BSET, then LOCK, then BSET again. VFO B is

Re: [Elecraft] K3 KAT3 auto tune

I'm fairly sure you can set the tuner to BYPASS for one antenna and have it
operational for the other. But I'm at work right now and cannot
verify. If nobody else responds to this (it's more than likely they will), I
will verify this evening and post the results.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - straight key and bug

2007-09-20 Thread ab7r
The K3 has TWO inputs. One for paddles and the other for a straight key or
computer/keyer input. No diodes or mods necessary :) They're both active at
the
same time, so you do not have to change anything in the menu to go from one to
another.

Re: [Elecraft] Customer responsiveness

2007-09-24 Thread ab7r
Not to worry. The K3 will have FOUR PTT schemes:

1. QSK
2. Semi Break-in
3. PTT only
4. A cross-mode setup used in 6m and up - See FAQ under 6m for details (This
feature
will probably be post first shipment).

Then of course there's the best VOX available that you will find anywhere. :)

When you have the CWT tuning indicator on you should be able to see the signal

Re: [Elecraft] mic pin config for the k3 microphone(what Mic r the FT's using)

2007-09-26 Thread ab7r
Hi Ed!

If you go to the Elecraft website and find the K3 FAQ page there's a mic pinout
diagram there.

I have the MH2 for when I want to take the rig portable. But from my fixed
location
I use a PR40 connected to the back. Or for contesting I use a set of Heil
Quiet
phones.

Just about any mic should be able to work well. So if you already have a mic,
wire
it up in accordance with the diagram on the FAQ. The K3 designers had great
forethought to put switchable bias on both the front panel and rear panel mic
connections. There should also be plenty of mic gain for most situations.

When you start using the radio, you should set the COMP to zero, adjust your
your
mic gain for correct ALC action, then introduce some compression if desired. I
only
use about 2 bars of indicated compression on the scale and I get fine audio
reports.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 in EC2 for K3?

Toby is correct. The KPA100 is not compatible with the K3. And the KPA3 is
strictly an internal component of the K3.

RE: [Elecraft] K3: Have any FT tried WinTest out yet?

2007-10-06 Thread AB7R
I have an older version of WT (2.28). It does not have any Elecraft support
options. That said, the Kenwood protocol seems to work with band changes.
But changing mode on the K3 does not seem to pick up in WT. I don't know
what changes they've made since this older version.

In the Bavarian Contest Club and in much of the EU WinTest has become
very popular for contest logging.

Do any of the field testers have experience with WinTest and the K3 yet?

The owner's manual is in the same location as other K3 docs. From the main

I don't see the schematic either.

Question. Can you put EQ set ups in memory for both TX EQ and RX EQ?

The reason that I ask that...is that when we multi-op...different strokes
for different operators. Or, is there a way in firmware to save different
EQ setups?

Just asking...

RE: [Elecraft] CQ WW CW & a K3

2007-11-25 Thread AB7R
Hank,

I did not see anywhere in your post that you put the K3 into SPLIT. When
the DX said QSX down 1 you could have simply gone into split mode and tuned
VFO-B with the B knob to 1.829. Then use your REV button to find the
current station working the DX and tune to that freq using VFO-A while still
holding REV. Remember, VFO-A will be your RX freq and VFO-B your TX freq.

Subject: [Elecraft] CQ WW CW & a K3

I just got home from CQ WW CW . a bunch of us got together at a
major station and we each picked a band and used our own calls.
10 M - no operator showed up and I don't think the band did either.
15 M - a brand new Omni VII
20 M - me and my K2/100 w/DSP
40 M - AC8W and my other K2/100
80 M - K8AQM and his K2/100
160 M - N8EA and a borrowed K3/100 with no serial number!
The K1/100 had the 2.7, 1.8 and 500 filters as I remember.

I got to sit in front of the K3 for a little over an hour and came away
with two observations . Well - three.
1. Best damn receiver I've sat in front of!
2. The small VFO knob had absolutely no drag. I don't know if they are
all like that, or if the guy who built it didn't do something. I don't
know his call or if I heard it I don't remember it.
3. This is the long, hard to explain thing.
Let's say I am listening to 1830.000 to a DX station. VFO A
The DX station says QSX 1829 so I set VFO B to 1829.00
The RIT is on and is + 1 KHZ - so A reads 1830.100
Now I want to listen to the pile on the TX frequency, so I press REV.
Now my TX freq reads 1829.100 and my RX freq on the bottom reads 1830.00
I find where the last station worked is and release the REV button. The
TX freq is going to be 100 Hz low!
Seems to me that the RIT should stay with the frequency and not the
location of that frequency.
As I saw it this afternoon that could cause me to not be on the TX
frequency where I want to be transmitting.

But, like I said in Nr 1 - best receiver I've ever used.

I'd like separate mode buttons instead of one button that rotates through
modes.

This is one of the reason Wayne setup quick memories 0-9. Easier to recall
the bands you want. This is seperate from the Mx per-band memories.

I'd like it to pick a mode based on frequency. If it can do that, I haven't
figured it out yet.

This is on the list for a possible feature update at a later date.

There's no place to engrave my callsign on the clear plastic LCD cover like
there is on the K1 and K2. :-(

When going from 100+ watts down to 5 watts you have to turn the power knob
several revolutions. It would be nice if there was a "QRP" button.

This should change in an upcoming firmware update soon.

There's a separate K3 support email address which seems to light up every K3

I don't see microHAM doing two versions of the K3 cable but it
is up to the guys in Slovakia.

According to the documentation in the K3 FAQ, there are some
issues in not supporting the front panel mic connector. First
is the inability to pass electret bias (Kenwood standard is bias
on pin 6 and an RC network in the microphone as shown in the FAQ).
The second is the lack of the up/down/function keys via the rear
panel (when they are supported).

Anyone who wants a "clean" front panel and does not need the
added mic functions can always get a female cable mount Foster
(CE8 at www.buxcomm.com) and make a short Foster to 1/8" and RCA
pigtail to connect mic and PTT to the rear panel connectors or
remove the Foster from the microHAM cable, clip the extra wires,
put heat shrink on the two pairs (1 & 7 for mic, 2 & 8 for PTT)
and install their own 1/8" and RCA connectors. This means that
the standard "Kenwood wired" MH2 and Proset K2 (assuming they
use the Heil iC cartridge) will not work with the rear panel
connections since the microphone or AD-1 adapter should
include the RC network.

RE: [Elecraft] microHAM K3 cables ...

2007-12-05 Thread AB7R
Dave,

The pinout is the same. You can take a hand mic from a TS-870, 570 whatever
and plug it into the K3 and it works fine.

For electret mics, the K3 is capable of supplying bias on both the front and
rear mic connections. For mics that are high impedance there's also a
switchable level of gain for both mic connections. I use the proset and
they work just fine. I also use a PR40 and that also works fine.

The proceedure is to use the MIC SEL menu to choose the desired mic and use
the "1" button to toggle the gain between hi and lo and the "2" button to
toggle the bias.

I was under the impression that the K3 was wired the same as Kenwoods for
microphone usage. However, In checking the Heil website, and the subsequent
link for mike connections, they show that pin 5 is 8 V., whereas the K3
manual shows that pin 6 should have 8 V. Actually the website for Heil
doesn't really show how the various adapters (I.E. for the Heil Traveler)
are wired. It only links you to the website of G4WPW for a description of
various pinouts for various rigs. What's the deal?

Also, the K3 manual specifies a low impedence mike (600 ohms +/-). Nothing
on the Heil website that I have found actually discusses what the impedence
is for mikes like the Heil Traveler or Pro Set.

I'm also curious why my Heil Pro Set headphones seem to have low output
compared to other headphones on various rigs that I own. Anybody know what
the impedence is for the headphones?

RE: [Elecraft] K3 data mode operation?

2007-12-22 Thread AB7R
Dave,

For now, when using AFSK mode only use the 915 pitch setting. If you do
that it will work fine.

Sorting the text from the serial port is on the list.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 data mode operation?

I've been trying data with my K3 and find the "Data A" mode works OK for
RTTY (unfortunately with only basic passband filtering from the K3). I
was using audio from a sound card fed via the line in socket. When the
K3 is set for data mode "AFSK A" which implies RTTY mode with AFSK (and
gives improved dual passband filtering as shown by the filter display),
there is no transmit output for audio into the line socket - which
worked perfectly when set to "Data A". Under advanced operating features
(page 31 of the current manual) there is no mention of data
transmission, only reception

There seems little interest in data via the RS232 lead, currently it
doesn't work properly on receive because of mixing frequency and other
"housekeeping" information with the received text.

I've not yet tried direct keying on mode "FSK D", this might work...

Any thoughts on data modes with the K3 in general, or have I just hit
features that are still to be implemented with data via RS232 and the
"AFSK A" mode?

No. You can send RTTY and PSK from the K3 by sending CW with a paddle.
It does decode both modes, displaying the text in the VFO B area.

If you want to send digital modes with a keyboard, though, you still
need a computer.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 and MixW

2007-12-30 Thread AB7R
Pete,

What mode do you have the K3 in. PSK-D? If so please change it. PSK-D is
not ready just yet (see the errata sheet). PSK work great right now in
Data-A mode with MixW. Make sure you use the MENU option MIC SEL and choose
Line In.
In this setup CMP is locked at zero (you need the current FW from the
website). And MIC will control the output level.

Hi all and Happy New Year

Can someone please show me where I am going wrong trying to get the the K3
in data mode to play nice nice with MixW?

I can key the tx no problem but monitoring on my k2 shows about 4 vertical
lines and it sounds like a carrier only and there is none of the usual twin
vertical lines only of a clean PSK31 signal.

The K3 decodes on the lcd readout but I cannot seem to get it to tx any
intelligence thru a pc

BTW I have connected the K3 to an Audigy2 soundcard per:

K3 out===SC Mic In

Any and all help appreciated and acknowledged.

RE: [Elecraft] K3: Dual key connection

Its even better. The K3 has a 1/4-in straight key jack AND a paddles jack.
Both can be used at the same time. I keep the computer connected to the
straight key jack while the paddles are still connected.

With the K2, an iambic paddle AND a straight key can be connected to the
key jack at the same time by the use of a couple of diodes as described
in the K2 manual. Thus it is possible to move ones hand from one key to
the other without making any menu adjustment. I find this facility very
useful when wishing to emphasise a word, etc, in a CW over.

I am unable to find any reference to this facility in the K3 manuals. My
question is: Is this possible with the K3?

Greg,
You are right about the bold faced caution on Page 47 and indeed I
waited long before doing the REF CAL, which I did using Method 2 with
the cover closed. However, I am still surprised by the frequency
excursion measured on start up. I did wait a lot longer and calibrated
it using method 2, zero beating it with WWV. This was at ref cal value
of 49,379,611, which is a lot closer to the frequency noted on the sheet
that came with the TCXO - 49,379,964.
With the ref cal set, I have re done VCO CAL and other calibrations.
For now all seems to be as it should be. I have my fingers crossed.
  Thanks for your help,
Raj
