What would be a normal value on the FP voltage display when tx at 100W, using factory fused cables? No sub installed. PS is Astron VS-35M linear, voltage set at 13.9 idling per FP display. drops to 11.1 on TX. Current varies but up to 15.5A indicated. Specs call for 17-22A tx @100W. Re: [Elecraft] P3 or Sub Rx
While I've always been extremely fond of my sub rcvr and found it invaluable for chasing split operations---I never got so attached to my P3---until now. I just finished building a one-meter diameter small transmitting loop for 10-20M operation in my condo back yard. Tuning it is so very easy now---all I have to do is watch the advancing wave of noise and signals rise until the crest of the wave is centered on my P3 screen! Voila! I set the span to 200kHz and the delay to about 6ms and the results on the P3 remind me of my old body surfing days in KH6 as I would often watch the waves off to the side (like seeing a cross-section) until I saw one I wanted to try. Worth every penny to me now that I found a slightly different than intended use for it with my magnetic loop antenna. Other Elecrafters with sharp-tuning high Q loops like mine should take note as the P3 becomes an essential operating aid when tuning them for resonance at the desired operating frequency. Re: [Elecraft] Is there a K4 on the horizon?
Seems to me that one viable possibility would be for Elecraft to build a new box - one that encapsulates the existing K3, but has a new front panel that's larger, with more knobs allowing each knob to have a singular function. For those that use the K3 as their main home radio - this would allow you to have larger knobs, spaced further out, and have that big radio feel - while those of us that travel constantly with our K3's can continue with the smaller footprint, which for me works great even though I have huge hands. Doing so would require re-engineering front panel, but probably not much more than that? Since the front panel is just ribbon-cabled to the rest of the radio. Seems like a relatively small engineering feat for a big bang but maybe its only an incremental change in terms of moving the needle and maybe that's not where Elecraft wants to focus. Re: [Elecraft] Anyone using a DXE NCC-1 with K3?
Thanks, Bob, for your concise description of how you use your NCC-1 with your K3---it is very helpful to me as I am almost confused by all the choices of configuration---a lot more ways to set it up than I thought. My situation is that I plan (at least initially) to use only 1 un-amplified noise antenna into the B input of the NCC-1 along with a DXE Receiver Guard (high RF limiter to protect both rig and NCC-1 during xmit) since my transmit antenna is a mere 20 feet or so from my operating desk. I'll see how that works and then add a second noise/receive antenna to the A input. Both noise antennas will be simple vertical wires or short indoor dipoles here in our small rented condo; maybe one will be longer and bent around corners and windows out to the back balcony. I can't really put the noise antennas outside the shack as our windows and back balcony are screened in with fiberglass in a frame that the owner installed that I would be very reluctant to mess with. At least my xmit antenna is outdoors and a bit higher up. While I am on a multiband inverted U dipole now I am almost finished building a really fine magnetic loop as mentioned in my earlier post; it will probably be an improvement over the inv. U to start with and its high Q will undoubtedly help with the RFI hash before I put the NCC-1 to work, too (fingers crossed). Ultimately I will also employ a second and third STL (mag loop) as noise/receive antennas for diversity reception and better noise nulli ng once I am able to put them in place. But that may a lot more tricky than I imagine if I will have to constantly re-tune them as well as the main transmitting loop---so we'll see how it goes with the simpler vertical wires first. I got the big box from DXE yesterday and lo and behold, the NCC-1 is almost the same size and heft as my loaded K3/100! I still need to make up some RG58 jumpers so I can hook it all up but I will try to do so tomorrow during the WPX (been delayed with other stuff all week so am not ready to get it up and running just yet). I want to make sure I hook it up correctly and your reply has certainly given me a clearer picture of how to accomplish that now. Since my noise antenna(s) will not be active I will set the internal dip switch to external power for the noise antennas and keep power from being applied to that port completely. Also, since I run QRO most of the time (and my STL will be set up to handle 650 watts from my KPA) I will make sure that the TX control line is plugged into the K3's PTT jack and that the BNC receiver Guard is correctly placed ahead of both the NCC-1 and K3 RX input. I considered spring for one of DXE's sequencers but as I am already over budget on this shebang I decided to go with the less expensive Receiver Guard initially. Hopefully this will suffice with no further gear inline required---but if anyone here thinks that is still unwise please speak up ASAP* as I want to try to get this going sometime Saturday during the WPX---I'll need it with the current noise on most of the bands here. (*If I AM running the risk of damaging my receiver/NCC I will not use it at all during QRO operation until I can eventually get a sequencer in line, too) Fingers crossed and hoping that I will be OK with what I have now so I can start enjoying this fine piece of gear right away. Thank you again, Bob for helping me out; it is very much appreciated. I can't wait to watch the noise diminish on my P3, too. I have local noise problems which come and go depending on time of day, day of week etc. I didn't like the idea of having a noise cancelling device in the high power transmit path, so picked up a DX Engineering NCC-1 which is perfect for use with my K3, inserted between the antenna OUT and antenna IN jacks. I have a horizontally polarized loop which I use as the RX antenna on the K3 when I need to fight noise. A vertical doublet antenna is used as the transmit antenna, which serves as the noise sense antenna in receive when the NCC-1 is active. To do this, the loop antenna goes to antenna port A on the NCC-1 (receive antenna input), K3 antenna OUT (from the transmit antenna) goes to antenna port B on the NCC-1 (noise antenna input) and the output of the NCC-1 goes to the K3 antenna IN. K3 KEY OUT goes to NCC-1 T/R CTRL to put it in bypass when the K3 is keyed. Now I have 3 choices: 1. If I then select the RX antenna on the K3, the NCC-1 is inserted and I use the quieter loop antenna for receive while nulling noise with the NCC-1 controls. 2. If I don't select the RX antenna on the K3, the NCC-1 is bypassed, and the transmit antenna is used
Re: [Elecraft] Anyone using a DXE NCC-1 with K3?
Hank; Many thanks for your two lengthy and detailed replies although I am a bit dismayed at your unlucky results with the NCC-1. Not really expecting to hear something like that so now I am scratching my head wondering whether or not to jump in anyway or hold off another year if/when the improved model hits the shelves. Some of what you wrote is a bit over my head but I got the general gist of it; obviously there is still room for improvement (perhaps in the quality control department if there is such a broad range between various units?). Perhaps you got the one and only Edsel of the lot, though considering that most every other review I've read has been overwhelmingly positive. I thought the YouTube demonstrations were compelling; especially the one with two strong BCB stations on the same frequency---with either one being able to be nulled out almost completely. Night and day! I'm not sure whether my simple condo antenna setup will be a better candidate or not compared to yours and others who have DXE noise antennas set up far away from their shacks and TX antenna(s). Right now I'm using a variable-length inverted U dipole (10-12-15-17-20M) with the top horizontal portion/feedpoint only about 20 feet above ground. It is suspended by some fiberglass poles mounted at the top of a wooden beam over our front porch balcony and I am able to work plenty of DX with the help of Ion, the Propagation God and the 650 watts that my KPA500 provides. While far from ideal at least I am able to enjoy the hobby much more and utilize my entire K-line again since departing KH6 (DX paradise) three years ago. As I mentioned before, my noise antenna so far is only the three or four foot whip atop my ANC-4 and most of the time it works from almost fair to very good---depending on various factors and the type of noise involved (usually next door or downstairs TV). My noise antenna is only about 20 feet away from my balcony dipole (whose ends are hanging down so it has both vertical and horizontal components---probably helping my signals get beyond the surrounding obstacles so close to me here. I am also just about to finish building my first STL (magnetic loop antenna) for 10-20M which are the bands I operate 98% of the time, too. I have been taking my time constructing it carefully so that it should perform at optimum levels for what it is (I rolled a 9.5' copper pipe 1.125 OD into a circle and it has only two silver brazed connections for the vacuum variable capacitor clamps). This loop will probably end up replacing the inverted U and also be less susceptible to the RFI that I am now experiencing---but I want to go the extra mile with my station anyway. I plan to roll additional loops (recently purchased a Hulk tubing roller that works very well) so my noise antenna will follow in my TX antenna's footsteps soon. I can put that 2nd (noise) loop out on our cramped back balcony and hope for the best. I don't really know much about how the coupling (or lack of) factors into all of this but it will be interesting to see how two STLs will perform with an NCC-1 and also the diversity feature in my K3. ( I also will upgrade both main and sub synthesizers, too later this year after every little bug is worked out and the backlog of orders gets caught up). One last thing I'll mention before I QRT and make a run to Home Depot (building a wooden stand for my loop); most of my noise is up on the higher bands---unlike your 160M operation that you used the NCC-1 for---so maybe I will enjoy better results for this particular usage? Anyway, I think I will go ahead and take the plunge today and try it out despite your helpful warning---curiosity might be getting the better of me... I already have some gold-plated BNCs and RCA phono cables that I can rig up so I will try it hooked into the KXV3A ports (I'll just remove the PR6 as nothing's happening on 6M now anyway) as well as make a cable for the PTT line. I hope to get this up and running by the upcoming WPX this weekend---either way, I will follow up with my impressions here thereafter in case other K3 owners are considering adding one of these to their ham shack. For your information apparently you do not have the whole story, unless Jeff sent you my original message. You do not even know what the box I received was doing . And that DXE confirmed the box was unusable as received. Further I emailed with the original designer of the box and he also agreed that it was unusable as received- and had suggestions for changes that I could do to make the amplitude control more usable. The inference was that the original design is not being built as originally designed. I do not elect to pay $600 for something I am going to start modifying the day I receive it . I FULLY understand everything in your first sentence- and went over all this at length with DXE. The improved model in fact is to address the issues I found - smaller amplitude steps in the two signal channels , and fixing the amplitude control so it is not +/- 0.5 dB for 2/3 of its rotation and then the 0.5 to 10 dB is in next 1/8 inch of rotation at either end . I will say the amplitude variation with phase change is excellent - even better than the 1 dB they quote - so very little iteration to get to a null Hank K7HP Here is what I sent to Jeff . Jeff - I just went thru a pretty disappointing experience with a NCC1 -- and I even bought the vertical active antenna to use to phase against my TX antenna. The NCC1 has gone back to DXEngineering - I played with it for about a week – never accomplished a damn thing with it – finally put a BNC T and 6 db pads in each arm to the two inputs –and a external step atten in one arm. It turned out the amplitude balance control range on the unit I had was +/- a half dB for 200 degrees of rotation – so the rest of a 10 dB step was compressed into a tiny movement at either end of rotation.Plus it appeared to be just attenuating both signals at that point – not really a null. So back it went – with my data - they confirmed it was like that –and said the “best ones” were maybe 2 to 3 dB for that half dB range I see and they would see if they could find one like that – 2 weeks and no find. They say two things – first it was really designed to work with two identical antennas and “hundreds of folks” have no problem when using identical antennas .-like their active antennas. Second they have a redesigned unit coming out some time in next 6 months to year (undefined) that will have smaller attenuator steps and less “expanded” amplitude range around the zero point . They suggested a fix that I could put a step attenuator in series with one side to get the two amplitudes in that 0.5 dB range . I don’t have a step atten with 0.5 dB steps smallest is 1 dB - guess I could make one with a carbon pot that was small increments . I emailed with Tom W8JI and he suggested some changes I could make to fix the amplitude control – but said he was in middle of a paying job , had not looked at that design for years , and would get back to me in a couple weeks . I thanked him but don’t bother I am going to just return it .Somehow I don’t see paying $600 for something I am going to have to modify. I get the impression they have screwed with his original design, I never did get any warm feeling they really knew what the hell they were talking about – sent them the test setup and what to do and what I was seeing – they confirmed it after a little over a week – but never called back or emailed like they said they would and there was always some excuse – so yesterday I said just give me credit and I will wait and see what the new unit
Re: [Elecraft] Anyone using a DXE NCC-1 with K3?
Am contemplating a purchase of a DXE NCC-1 receiving antenna/noise phasing unit very soon (tomorrow, actually---so I will have it in time for the WPX next weekend) for use with my K3/P3/KPA500 and was wondering if anyone else in the group uses one and how they have it configured. Apparently I will either need to run it via my RX antenna jack or else with a sequencing unit (or RTR-1A controller that DXE also sells) if I want to run it inline with my main antennas. My main usage will be for the reduction of RFI that I am often subject to here in our condo complex (plasma or LCD TVs, wall warts and other electronic RF garbage producers nearby). I currently use an old JPS ANC-4 with its attached noise receiving whip that works fairly well---but could still be much better. (I don't plan to buy the active antennas that DXE also sells with or without the NCC-1; at least not for any foreseeable future). I also use my Elecraft PR6 6M preamp affixed via the XVTR or RX antenna BNC jacks and am wondering if I can run the NCC-1 through it with or without the PR6 being on (I have it wired so that the PR6 activates only when I am on 6M, IIRC)---but I am getting older these days and am more easily confused/dyslexic when it comes to IN/OUT jacks than I used to. Will it be fairly easy to run both together or will it require removing the PR6 if I want to run the NCC-1 through the RX ports? Any user comments or thoughts on the subject will be appreciated; I have seen a few YouTube videos on the NCC-1 and it looks like it can be very effective on QRN coming from one particular source (like my ANC-4 but even noticeably better). It certainly will be fun to see the noise disappear or fall dramatically on my P3, too! 73, Jeff, NH7RO K3/P3/KPA500 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] sub rcvr problem
I suppose I should have read the entire digest before replying; glad that Joe solved his deaf sub rcvr problem soon after he posted it here. FWIW, my problem had nothing to do with the RX ant switch settings AFAIK---it was the TX gain calibration which brought it back to life. Re: [Elecraft] K3 sun rcvr problem
Hi Joe; Don't despair---I once had the same problem with my sub rcvr going out after operating split one time. Diagnosis was tough and I don't think anyone ever figured out what happened; after a good number of helpful but fruitless emails from Aptos I removed my sub and shipped it off to Elecraft for further troubleshooting. They found absolutely nothing wrong with it and sent it right back to me. I reinstalled it carefully as when I built it but still no joy. I double checked all the connections, filter configuration, etc. and everything was in place correctly. Just about when I was about ready to pull my last strands of greying hair out---I went through a whole new TX gain calibration (IIRC---it might have been another function but I'm 95% sure it was that). Voila! My sub sprang back to life as if nothing had ever happened! My only somewhat educated guess is that some stray RF from my full-bore QRO operation running split in hopes of snagging a DXpedition knocked the TX gain calibration out of whack (or something like that---others more technically inclined may well chime in with differing opinions) and thus my sub went almost deaf like yours (same symptoms exactly). So get out your K3USB cable and try another TX gain calibration; it will probably cure what ails your K3's sub (fingers crossed). 73 and GL, Jeff, NH7RO/AE (just passed my Extra exam yesterday afternoon; yippee!) http://www.louisferreira.org/Jeff_Cathrow.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Power Pole connectors
I had numerous issues with APP's and my original, factory built K3. It had issues with severe voltage drop, heating APP connectors, low power output and DC power outages. I lost count how many times I was told to and did replace the APP's on my power cable. (And it was factory made to start with!) It was finally sorted by it's new owner after I got so pissed off with the damned thing. The cause was dry solder joints (to the point where the solder was pretty much non existent I'm told) on the K3's motherboard at the APP's mounting point. I am not convinced that the sub 45 Amp APP's connections are very good mechanically unless you use the roll pin, which kinda defeats the one main advantage of APP's, their quick release capabilities. So, I am still not a fan of the 45Amp and smaller APP's but the 50Amp APP's and their clones get a lot of use here and in my motorhome as they do connect solidly but still allow disconnection when you want. - Jeff Cochrane - VK4XA Innisfail, QLD, Australia. It uses a $40 GPS module that has a battery-backed clock chip in it (so it keeps reasonable time when there is no GPS satellite lock). It only needs a single GPS satellite for accurate time. I put it out in my garage because my shack is in the basement and GPS coverage is marginal there. It communicates with the display unit via an XBee Series One radio link, updating the display in my shack (driven by an Arduino Uno) about every 200 milliseconds. Is it overkill? Probably. But I had fun designing it, building it, and writing and debugging the code. I’m a ham… I do things like this because it’s fun - and since I’m not selling it I don’t have to worry too much about how practical it is. Re: [Elecraft] My KAT500 seems very sensitive to common mode RFI
Thanks Jim, I'll give it a read and order up some mix-31 toroids. Does it surprise you the KAT500 is getting power cycled as I described? Is it really that sensitive? 10 of the ferrite beads I got from DXStore (rated for 150MHz or lower) work fine for 10m-20m. But no dice on 40m, so I guess the frequency is just too low for them to be effective (or perhaps I'd need like 50 of the suckers!) -Jeff On Saturday, February 14, 2015 10:06 AM, Jim Brown j...@audiosystemsgroup.com wrote: On Sat,2/14/2015 9:48 AM, Jeff Hall, W6UX wrote: can anyone suggest some further experiments to try? Yes. The problem is that ferrite beads slipped onto a transmission line does NOT make an effective common mode choke. Those beads are inductive, and, depending on the length of the line and the operating frequency, many lines look capacitive. The inductance resonates with the capacitance, and the common mode current increases. To be effective as a common mode choke, we need a high value of common mode impedance, and the best way to get there is with a high value of RESISTANCE. We obtain that by forming a low-Q parallel resonant circuit -- we wind multiple turns of the feedline through a lossy ferrite toroid or clamp-on. The number of turns needed depends on the ferrite material and the operating frequency. The best ferrite material for the HF bands is Fair-Rite #31, because it has the lowest effective Q over the widest frequency range. Study k9yc.com/RFI-Ham.pdf and use the Cookbook as a guide to wind the chokes you need. The chokes are most effective at the feedpoint of your antennas. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to w...@ymail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] My KAT500 seems very sensitive to common mode RFI
I have a Hex Beam and a 40m wire vertical w/ two elevated radials. I have been fighting what appears to be a common mode RFI problem which causes the KAT500 to continuously power cycle as long as the K3 is transmitting. Generally this only occurs when driving my KPA500 amp beyond a certain output level which differs for a given band and frequency. I am powering the KAT500 with its own AC adapter. The problem can occur in both bypass and auto mode. 7-10 ferrite beads on the coax attached to the KAT500 solved the power cycling problem for my hex beam antenna and I successfully operate QRO in bypass mode on all bands and modes. However the beads did not help with the wire vertical. I can drive 300w into my dummy load with no ferrite beads on the coax and the KAT500 is fine. The SWR is low enough I should be able to use these antennas to run the KAT500 in bypass mode. If I put it in Auto mode the problem is exacerbated. I can tune the wire vertical just fine with the KAT500 in Auto mode at a tuning level of 25w from the K3. However, if I try to transmit at 5w or more (SSB for example), the KAT500 starts to power cycle. I have no problem using the wire vertical if it is connected directly to the K3's internal ATU. I observed that in this configuration, I could still trip the power on the KAT500 even though it's not even connected to that antenna, so I do believe this may be a common mode RF issue in the shack. Somehow noise is finding its way into the KAT500. Several turns of the AC power adapter's cord around a few ferrite beads hasn't helped either. I will at some point remove the KAT500 from the equation and see how things work by directly connecting the K3 to the KPA500. I would like to keep it in service as I might need it at the extreme band edges of the wire vertical. The vertical wire is from W8AMZ. I don't believe there is any kind of current Balun inside the feed point but I did place 10 ferrite beads over the coax at the feed point. I'm running 100' of RG8X to this antenna. The hex beam antenna is feed with LMR-400 and RG-213. So I don't know if the problem is specific to my vertical wire antenna and feedline or if I should suspect a defective KAT500. Before I take the KAT500 offline, can anyone suggest some further experiments to try? 73, Jeff W6UX __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I have several turns of the AC adapter cord through two snap on beads. I don't have anything on the AUX cables at this time, but that is something I should probably check. I ordered 6 of the Mix 31 Big Clamp toroids from KF7P. For the 40m vertical I'll place one choke at the feedpoint and see if the problem is resolved. If not, I'll place another choke at the KAT500. If I still have a problem, another choke will be placed at the output of the KPA500. If that still doesn't work, another choke will be placed at the output of the K3. 73, Jeff W6UX __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft
[Elecraft] Advantage of KBPF3 in K3?
No response to my earlier question about the usefulness of the KBPF3 posed last week so here goes again; if one already has an AM filter in one of the K3's slots what does one need a KBPF3 for (in terms of general coverage SWLing)? Does it allow band selection of the popular SWBC bands in addition to the ham bands? Still curious. 73, Jeff, NH7RO K-Line proud assembler/owner since 2011 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Advantage of KBPF3 in K3?
OK, guys, I've got it now (makes a ton of sense now that I think about it). I don't do a lot of SWL anymore but I might want to add one to my K3 sometime for the fun of it. Thanks very much for all of your replies and feel free to close this thread now that it has been answered well. 73, Jeff, NH7RO Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Advantage of KBPF3 in K3? From: n...@elecraft.com Date: Mon, 9 Feb 2015 14:23:10 -0800 CC: elecraft@mailman.qth.net To: cathrowinternatio...@hotmail.com if one already has an AM filter in one of the K3's slots what does one need a KBPF3 for (in terms of general coverage SWLing)? Does it allow band selection of the popular SWBC bands in addition to the ham bands? Hi Jeff, The AM crystal filter is for close-in selectivity (6 kHz) in the I.F. This filter can be used in AM and SSB modes whether in or out of a ham band. The KBPF3 is at a different point in the receive chain: at the front end. It provides band-pass filters several MHz wide to allow copy of SWL ranges between the ham bands. Without a KBPF3, there are a number of places between ham bands where sensitivity would roll off up to 20 dB or so. This is because the K3's normal band-pass filters are very narrow, covering just the ham bands themselves. This is a very good thing from a receive performance standpoint; it removes strong signals that are well out of each ham band that could otherwise cause spurious or image responses. Unlike the K3, most receivers have really wide band-pass filters, leaving them susceptible to such interference in the ham bands. By adding a KBPF3, you'll be able to tune virtually the entire range from 0.5 to 30 MHz (plus 6 meters) with your K3 without significant loss of sensitivity. The K3 automatically selects the KBPF3 filters when you tune a certain distance outside a given ham band. This is how we provide MARS coverage (when enabled). I said virtually the entire range because there is one gap: right around the first I.F. (8.215 MHz). In the vicinity of this gap, sensitivity will be quite a bit lower because the K3 has multiple traps at this frequency designed to ensure excellent first-I.F. rejection. Also, the range from 0.5 to 1.5 MHz is gradually attenuated as you go lower in frequency because of a high-pass filter that protects the PIN diodes used in the T/R switch. To get around this, you can bring the signal into the RX ANT jack on the KXV3 option. You might do this is you were doing low-band (AM broadcast) DXing. A KBPF3 can be added to the main receiver, or the sub receiver, or both. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Question about KBPF3
When I built my K3 I loaded it up fairly well with options but didn't include a KBPF3. I did install a 13kHz filter for FM use on a few bands (2,6 10) and AM receive. Since I am able to receive the SW broadcast stations fine I wonder what the advantage is if one installs the KBPF3? Are the various SWBC bands automatically included along with the ham bands? I've always been curious about this so if anyone could fill me in on whatever advantages there are to installing one that would be great. 73, Jeff, NH7RO __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] KPA500 powercycling at higher wattages into KPA500
My KAT500 is getting power-cycled in CW and RTTY modes at various drive levels from the K3 on different bands. I can run SSB full power with no problems at all, and receive superb audio reports (no hint of RF in my transmissions). I am thinking I have either an excessive voltage drop on the AC circuit or perhaps there is enough RF getting into the shack to trip up the KAT500 power when using the higher duty cycle modes. Everything is running on the same 120v house circuit. I experimented with moving both the amp and the KAT500 to a different circuit in the same room, but this did not solve the problem. Let me first describe the equipment, and then I'll list the frequencies and power thresholds that tripped the KAT500 into a power cycle: Antenna: Traffie Hex Beam. Very low SWR, typically 1.2 or less, sometimes 1.5 on 10 and 12 meters. The antenna is over a portion of the house, and about 20 feet away from the shack. The coax is grounded at the base of the antenna (two ground rods, through a lightning arrestor). KAT500: I have this in BYPASS mode. I don't really need the tuner for the hex beam, but I plan on using it with a future vertical for 40m. I am powering the KAT500 with its own AC power adapter. For good measure, I wrapped about 4 turns of the power cord through a ferrite bead at the transformer end of the cable. This is a 15V 1000mAh power adapter from Radio Shack. KPA500 is plugged into the same circuit on its own outlet at the wall. HV reads 78.5 at rest. The unit is sitting on top of the KAT500 with the foldout legs extended. K3 is powered with an Astron RS-35M, on the same house circuit. P3 is powered by the K3 VDC out On 15 meters CW, the KAT500 begins to experience power cycles driving 20-22 watts. The amp, when it crosses about 450 watts, the KAT500 power cycles. I ran 30 watts into it for about 620+ out with no problems on SSB, SWR never exceeded 1.2 on the KAT500's indicator lamps. On 12 meters CW, the KAT500 begins to experience power cycles driving just 9 watts (about 180w out). SWR on this band is a steady 1.5. I did have some success by moving the KAT500's power adapter to the other circuit in the room and was able to push the K3 to 22 watts (480 out) before the powercycling returned. This lead me to believe I had a voltage drop issue, perhaps from running the amp on the same 110 circuit. But on 10 meters I still had problems even using the other circuit to power the KAT500. That makes me think noise is getting into the KAT500, or perhaps RF from the antenna is putting noise on my AC house circuits. I was able to run the amp to full power on SSB with no power cycling of the KAT500. On 10 meters the KAT500 power cycles with just 6 watts drive (170 out). On phone I can run full power with no issues. SWR is 1.2 on this band. I have a Morgan AC line filter arriving tomorrow and I'll see if the problem persists with it filtering the house circuit feeding the shack equipment. Do these symptoms smell more like a noise issue (RF in the shack) or a line voltage deficiency with the house circuit? I'm think probably taxing the line in the higher duty cycles, and it just manifests at different thresholds on different frequencies. When transmitting a long string of CW or RTTY, if the KAT500 gets into repeated power cycles the KPA500 eventually throws a fault. Some other observations: If I turn on my desk lamps, at the higher outputs the lamps will modulate slightly with my voice. I think I'm sucking too much juice from the circuit, but this is just a guess on my part. Generally the only other piece of equipment in the house that seems to be affected by RF is our DirectTV receiver (the notorious touch-panel design). It is generally only affected on 10 meters, with a high duty cycle mode like RTTY. Can anyone provide me some more troubleshooting tips? [Elecraft] New KAT500/KPA500 owner needs help (K3/P3/KAT500/KPA500/Microkeyer II)
I just finished building my KAT500 and KPA500. I am trying to integrate them into my existing setup consisting of a K3, P3, and Microham Microkeyer II. And the problems I am observing so far are: - The KPA500 isn't talking to the K3 (or vice versa); band changes are not being tracked from either device- The KPA500 isn't amplifying any amount of drive (at 35 watts out of the K3, the first LED on the KPA500 lights. Even with the OPER LED lit).- The KAT500 doesn't always power on. Sometimes the K3 has to be on first. Reconnecting the ACC port on the K3 seems to trigger this state.- The K3 isn't responding to mode changes in WinWarbler (RTTY/CW/SSB) Something tells me I've got a problem with the ACC line and or cabling. [Elecraft] KPA500/KAT500/W2 order advice needed
Hi everyone, I presently have a K3/100 hooked up to a P3 and a Microkeyer II. I want to add three new Elecraft products to my lineup: KPA500 amp, KAT500 tuner, and the W2 watt meter. There are many options listed on the Elecraft ordering page and I'm not sure if I have all the necessary cabling options selected. Additionally I need advice on which directional couplers I should choose for the W2. Here are the items currently in my shopping cart: - KAT500-K (High Power ATU, Kit) - E850463 (KAT500 to KPA Aux Cable) - KPA500-K (500W Linear Amplifier, Kit) - KPAK3AUX (KPA to K3 AUX Cable) - CBL36UHF (36 Coax cable) (three: K3-W2, W2-KPA500, KPA500-KAT500) - PWR-US240a (US 240V Power Cord) -- extra, for future use when I have a 240v line - W2-K (W2 Wattmeter, Kit) - DHCF-200 (0.1-200W 1.8-54MHz directional coupler) - DHCF-2000a (1-2000w 1.8-53MHz directional coupler) So, have I forgotten anything critical to get everything connected? The Microkeyer II uses the RS-232 port on the P3 and the ACC port on the K3. The KPAK3AUX cable Kit includes a Y-cable for the ACC port so that should make room for the Microkeyer II to be inserted into the rest of the K-Line gear. I picked the 0.1-200W directional coupler as I wanted to put the W2 between the K3 and the KPA500. Is it worthwhile adding the second coupler for 1-2000w? I'm assuming you only use this if you want to place the W2 after the KAT500? Thank you all for any suggestions! Jeff Hall Not using encrypted e-mail? When I'm running I'm using several screens to pull out marginal signals. Those screens buffer the decoded text long enough for me to look at all of them and make a decision about what is correct. By this time the small display on the K3 has scrolled away. If on the other hand you had an overlay of text** on the P3 display I now have it buffered long enough to add it to my decision path as another set of data from a decoder that has different characteristics than my other decoders (MMTTY, 2Tone, hardware modems, etc.) A feature like this would seem to have a broader audience than for SSTV, but perhaps I'm partial...;) ** I would overlay the display with white text over the color waterfall so that I can still see waterfall history behind the text. The simplest get you there now solution is to simply disable complimentary bands in each K3. Set up the left radio for 80-20-10 and the right radio for 160-40-15, for one example. You didn't buy Steppirs to exclude bands on each radio, but this will give you protection now while you pursue one of the other suggestions. The exact implementation of the logic gates is left to the student, there are several possibilities, but it would take a number of external logic gates to implement. If you are really into logical devices, you could program a chip to do that directly from the band data outputs - if all 4 of the outputs from both K3s are a match, assert TX INH to both transceivers. I do not know of an existing device that will provide that function, so the implementation would have to be created 'from scratch'. [Elecraft] broken receiver, I suspect
I just sent the message below to support, but I suspect they are all partying in Dayton. If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear them - thanks! - jeff wk6i -- Forwarded message -- hi - I recently lent my K3 #00027 as part of the W1AW/7 multi-op from Nevada. The environment was not well controlled and I'm pretty sure my receiver was damaged during a band change. On the last day of the operation I was calling CQ on 12m and getting no response. Turns out everyone was calling me but I was hearing almost nothing. On my bench I checked it using an XG2. The 50uV setting gave only S3. I then did a full parameter initialization and then tried to calibrate the RF gain using the K3 utility. The utility reported that there was not enough signal to perform the calibration. I also have an XG1 so I tried that. Same result. I tried turning the pre-amp on and off, which did cause about a 2 S unit difference as might be expected. The attenuator also caused an audible difference but not a useful S meter reading. One might suspect that I've blown out one or more of those PIN diodes before the preamp. If I had any laying around I might try a swap, but...;) Also: I do have the jumper for the extreme signal protection installed. -- Jeff Stai ~ wk6i.j...@gmail.com Twisted Oak Winery ~ http://www.twistedoak.com/ Facebook ~ http://www.facebook.com/twistedoak __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 question
Slava; There is no tuner inside the KPA500---that's why the KAT500 came about; it is optional to the amp. As for it being a must have I would say that depends on your antennas and operating habits. If you have resonant antennas on the bands you operate you can easily get by without the KAT500. I have a K3, P3 and KPA500 and when I was operating my antenna farm in Hawaii the setup was great for all but one of my antennas that had an SWR of more than 1.71. It would have been nice to have the autotuner but wasn't particularly necessary for me. I liked the concept of a 600-650 watt solid state automatic band-switching amp so much (and the same size as the K3) that I dumped my 1200-watt Commander 6 meter amp that I had cherished since new so that I could buy the KPA and have half the power (3db less) on six meters but about 7 or 8db more power on HF as well. Seemed like a very acceptable tradeoff to me and I don't look back having done so. Mine consistently cranks out 600-650 watts PEP on most of the bands without a problem and is also very quiet---silent, in fact, 95% of the time. The fan settings are adjustable in the menu, too. Nice. Building the KPA500 was even easier than the K3 and every bit as much fun. I can recommend one wholeheartedly. As far as I know; the potential for a KPA-1500 is about the same as for a K4; practically nil! 73, Jeff, NH7RO EL18 Texas Gulf Coast cathrowinternatio...@hotmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] PR6 power plug
Collin and the group; Here's a neat and simple solution that I discovered when I got my PR6: If you need to also power another Elecraft accessory such as a P3 you will need a way to plug the two phono (RCA) plugs into the single phono jack in the back of the K3 (accessory power outlet). Rooting around my big bag of audio connectors I happened across a Radio Shack gold-plated two-into-one RCA adapter plug and---voila!---I realized it would allow me to power both accessories simultaneously. Before I ran across the adapter I realized I had no way to power my new preamp with the P3 already plugged in but now my dilemma was solved. I would check with an pro audio shop for this adapter if there is no Radio Shack outlet in your area as these 2-into1 RCA types are probably not so common elsewhere. Now my K3's stock 12v accessory power jack easily provides enough juice to both P3 and PR6 simultaneously and it saved me from having to use another separate 12v source to run the PR6 in the process. 73, Jeff, NH7RO K3 5528 P3 1397 KPA500 0250Another Elecraft Happy Camper cathrowinternatio...@hotmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K3 commander issue
I noticed that when I switch frequency from a USB to an LSB one or visa versa on my K3 by clicking on a spot, or a memory in memory bank 1, the K3 changes to the right mode for an instant then goes back to the mode it was in. I tested this with my 7100 and Commander operates correctly. I just moved my K3 to this location from my other home and there I never noticed this problem. I also recently added an Elecraft KAT500 and KPA500 to the mix and maybe this caused the issue? Anyway it has caused me to be in the wrong mode on several occasions and would like to fix this. I tried to mess with the command interval and scan dwell in the commander config to no avail. Does anyone running the same setup have/had this problem? Anyone have a clue? Hi Bruce. I was looking at the PX3 case today. It's not very deep and the current P3 won't fit in there. And Eric did confirm that. Yes, it is possible, and we're working on a special cable for this. 73, Wayne N6KR Now THAT I am interested in, I'd be interested in a cable of about 8 - 10 Metres in length. [Elecraft] KX3+K3 in SO2R
Hello friends, I'm curious who has tried an SO2R setup of K3 as primary, and KX3 as secondary radios in a SO2R set up. If you did, did you find anything out of the ordinary with respect to the KX3 being the secondary radio? More prone to interference from the primary radio (or vise-versa)? My guess is that it should be just fine, but if someone's already walked in those shoes and worked through things I'd love to hear them. My plan is to use the K3+Acom amp as primary, KX3+100w amp as secondary, using the YCCC SO2R box as the controller. This will be for a DXpedition for CQWW SSB in October. Thanks for all the suggestions on and off list. I bought a VGA extension cable at Best Buy thinking it would be straight through. I'm sure I have some DB-15's at my summer home that's 62 miles away, and if I was there I would just build the needed cable. Re: [Elecraft] Advice on 6 meters...
Hi Phil, tune up your hex beam and start listening on 50.125. Also there are beacons between 50.060 and 50.080. Also watch for spots on your favorite cluster. But most importantly call CQ once in a while on 50.125 ssb. Sometimes you'll find a dead band is really open. You can also try CW around 50.099. This will get you started. If you end up wanting to step up, a 3 element is inexpensive. You can put it on a cheap 20 foot pole lashed to a fence post. You can work a lot with this simple setup. Have fun! Re: [Elecraft] Advice on 6 meters...
Ps. Regarding the availability of CW, I think that depends on the time you spend on the band and the nature of the opening. When the dx is afoot from outside the us there can be as much CW as ssb. In fact my main motivation to upgrade from tech was to be able to work dx CW on six meters. But as someone else said YMMV ;) 73 jeff wk6i On Wednesday, February 26, 2014, Jeff Stai wk6i.j...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Phil, tune up your hex beam and start listening on 50.125. The Bose Companion speakers are great. The RF shielding seems to work quite well. Speakers are a little bassy but that can be EQ'd out. I am happy with mine. Re: [Elecraft] CES2014 micro power supply
Well I've had my Gamma for maybe 5 years, used it with several brands of transceivers, and don't do anything stupid like try to run RTTY, FM, or AM modes at full power, or run excessive speech processing. I do run PSK31 a lot when operating with it, but only at 30 watts or so. This is all common sense. I have never heard the fan, it is quiet. I don't have it here right now(it is at my summer home) but I think there is a CE or UL sticker on it, or both. I have experienced NO problems. Your radio uses power only 35% of the time when transmitting CW, and about 25% during normal Voice SSB operation. But a lot higher percentage if you run RTTY or some other digimodes. There's no mention of CE, FCC or UL (safety) approvals, or if there is any over-voltage protection (for your expensive radio, and/or other DC powered kit.) Re: [Elecraft] rtty via cw paddle
hi Todd - As I understand it, the K3 when transmitting RTTY via CW paddles does not send diddles - rather, it stays in a constant state until you give it a character via the paddles and then it sends the character. Some decoders and some decoders under some conditions do not respond well to this because the decoder gets out of sync - the start time of the second character is not an integral number of character periods from the first character. These decoders sync with the character cycle in an attempt to reduce errors. Most encoders send diddles - a non-printing character like LTRS sent over and over - to help the decoder maintain character sync when there is no printing character to send. A great explanation of this can be found here: http://www.aa5au.com/gettingstarted/rtty_diddles_technical.htm I probably have some detail of this wrong but I'm pretty sure the gist is correct. 73 jeff wk6i On Thu, Dec 19, 2013 at 9:23 AM, todd ruby t...@ruby-wine.com wrote: I tried working ZS9MADIBA today and he kept coming back saying my settings must be wrong because I was not printing correctly. [Elecraft] K3 Powerpole Replacement
Hi everyone, Has anyone on the list replaced the Anderson powerpoles on their K3's with something else? (Something like the 4 pin plugs and sockets that are fitted to most current YaeComWoods I guess) Why do I want to replace them you ask? Well, because my K3 gets around and more often than not sits on a wobbly table whilst I'm out in the scrub or occasionally even sits in my lap whilst I'm operating. The powerpoles has once again raised their ugly heads and keep disconnecting or not making proper contact and I'm fed up with them. I just want a connector that I can plug in and it will stay there, sadly that has not been the case with either genuine Anderson powerpoles or all the different brands of knock-offs. Re: [Elecraft] Icom 7100 and KAT500/KPA500 PTT issues
I got a chuckle out of this. After trying to figure out how to hook up the AMP to the 7100 I must have been having a senior moment. I built the interface described in the Icom manual and thought I can't believe I never had to do this before as I owned several Icom HF transceivers over the years. After getting it up and running I later visited my other home where I have all my radio spare parts, junk, etc, I went through the interface cable junk box and found *TWO* complete working 13 pin to ALC, and PTT cables. What is scary is I don't remember building them or ever using them. I'm turning 65 in a few days, please this is not going to get worse :-) 73 Jeff kb2m -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of k...@comcast.net Sent: Wednesday, November 6, 2013 1:49 PM To: Walt W0CP Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Icom 7100 and KAT500/KPA500 PTT issues The 4-wire AH4 connection doesn't PTT key the amp. It has 12v, ground, Start, which is a signal from the Icom to the tuner that is asserted when you press the Icom tune button, and ah4 key, which is asserted by the tuner when it needs a tune level signal from the Icom. The amp needs a separate PTT key line from the Icom RCA connector to the kat500, and another RCA cable from kat500 to amp. The AH4 Key line is distinct from exciter to amp PTT and although both have key in their names, they have different purposes. One of our diagrams in the owners manual may have omitted the RCA keying cables. A manual revision is in the works. 73 de Dick, K6KR Thanks for the info Dick. The use of the word KEY in the Icom description of pin 1 was confusing me. Your explanation makes this much clearer now. I also got a reply on this offlist and was told they got their 7100 KAP500/KAT500 setup working with the interface explained in the IC-7100 advanced instruction manual page 2-11. In addition to wiring the PTT OUT circuit, you also must configure H-SEND in the SET CONNECTIONS menu (page 17-26). Also found on page 19-11 is a simple mod to output the band information. I'm not sure how this would be used with the Elecraft pair without building another cable. We will look into this later, unless someone has tried already. So I think we can say the Icom transcerivers with AH-4 ATU interface description on page 8, and figure 3 in the the KAT500 tuner manual would be in error if all Icom AH-4 interfaces are the same ? 73 Jeff kb2m __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KAT500/KPA500 with Icom 7100
I brought my KAT500/KPA500 setup to my winter home after getting it put together and working with my K3 at my shore residence. Now I'm trying to get it working with my Icom 7100. After setting up the Elecraft pair, only menu item I see to set is in the KPA500, RADIO, set to ANALOG. I'm having two problems. 1. I'm not getting PTT to activate. I checked the AH-4 interface cable and it has the correct pinout. If I ground the center pin of the RCA PTT cable the AMP keys as expected. The problem is the 7100 isn't grounding pin one. Does anyone know if there a config command in the 7100 to activate this? I can't find anything. When you key up the 7100 the pin stays open and not to ground as I think it should be doing. 2. I'm not getting any band switching with this setup. If I click on a spot with DXLab I would expect the Elecraft pair to follow the 7100, I'm thinking if problem 1 is fixed problem 2 will also be ? All other AH-4 functions seem to be working ok. The cable powers the KAT500, and If I hit the tune button on the 7100 the KAT500 obeys. Coolaid drinkers, yes I know if I replace the 7100 with another K3 my troubles will be over :-) 73 Jeff kb2m __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Restoring this knob to the 12:00 position restored VFO reception in my right ear. It must have gotten knocked by someone using my rig at Field Day. What a relief! 73, Jeff Message: 25 Date: Mon, 9 Sep 2013 07:25:15 -0700 (PDT) From: Mike K2MK k...@comcast.net To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] VFO B receive not heard in headphones with SUB on Message-ID: 1378736715468-7578753.p...@n2.nabble.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Hi Jeff, After pushing the SUB button you have no volume in the right ear. Lets begin. Are the headphones fully inserted into the jack. Is the SUB RX RF gain control fully clockwise. Is the SUB RX tuned to the same band or perhaps a different (dead) band. Press A-B twice to transfer VFO settings to VFO-B. CONFIG:SPKR+PH should be off. Press BSET and observe your antenna selection, PRE/ATT conditions, NR, etc. Make changes as required. Is the outer ring of your volume knob set to NOR (for volume) or set to BALANCE (for left right balance). Either will work but you need to know which it is. Check CONFIG:L--MIX--R. For the simplest type of operation you want A-b. 73, Mike K2MK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] VFO B receive not heard in headphones with SUB on
I haven't used my K3 much since Field Day. Today I turned it on and engaged the sub receiver by tapping SUB. Instead of hearing VFO B in my right ear, I only hear VFO A in my left ear. Adjusting the SUB RF control affects VFO A volume. It's like the radio's sub receiver configuration got messed up, or maybe one of the internal coax cables maybe came loose? Or I guess I just forgot how to use the sub receiver! Can someone please provide me with the troubleshooting procedures? Thanks!
