[Elecraft] K144XV Offset is not accurate. WAS: New K144XV module installed no power out..
Hi all, I took it all apart again. The TMP cable on the IN side of the KXV3A board was just slightly loose. I should have checked it a 4th time-HI HI Checked into the Beam-Spinners Weak signal net on 144.200 here in Denver. Net Control has a 9700 and my offset was off and had to tune to 144.199.5 to get everyone in clearly. So, I need to calibrate it-the manual says how to dial in using the factory spec but that number is obviously off. Is there a resource my Google-Fu has not be able to find? Re: [Elecraft] K144XV with microwave transverters
Rus, The key is that you cannot directly set the K3 IF to 144MHz, but you must set the CONFIG: XV1 ADR parameter correctly. See the "Using External Transverters with the K144XV" section in the K144XV manual page 21. You will have to switch the input to your external 144MHz IF transverters from the output of your band decoder. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/17/2019 8:55 AM, Rus Healy wrote: Good morning. I have built a band decoder and set the XVn displays for each band accordingly. I see that I can't set the IF for the XVn to anything but 28 or 50 MHz, so that implies that 144 MHz is not supported along with the higher bands and band decoder configuration. I verified with Elecraft support that this isn't supported--they steered me here (after a 10-day delay and three separate emails to get any answer at all, but I digress). Re: [Elecraft] K144XV issues in K3S - audio distortion and fading signals over time
So the problem is clearly in the transvertor.Given the fact that both rx and tx follow roughly the same pattern a common cause seems to be logical. That could be voltage or oscillator.Check if the voltage remains constant on both rx and tx circuits. Also check the oscillator signal and level with a scoop or spectrum analyser. Most probably it is heat related. Given the fact that audio distortion starts rather quickly the oscillator would be my prime suspect.73 HenkPA0CVerzonden vanaf mijn Samsung Galaxy-smartphone. The S-Meter went from 60 over S9 to S8 over the period of 45 minutes and the output power (measured by a Bird WM) fell from 12 watts to below 5. - The audio distorts almost immediately - no testing on 2 meter AM or SSB yet I did notice that the "weakening" occurs faster with lots of TX use. So maybe it is heat related?? The problem is that it doesn't require much TX time at all - very little. I seem to recall running the module at only a few watts out (like 2), and I could rag chew on FM for 45 minutes and the output power was never attenuated by protection circuits. Running the module now at -9.0db pwr setting causes the effect to happen within just a few minutes. If I turn the K3S off and let it sit for 30 minutes, and try the transverter again, it works fine. BUT after the rig sits on for 20 - 30 mins (NO TX), the received FM signal starts to "weaken". Distortion starts almost immediately. The K144XV is on the latest code release and I double-checked the 144 and 146 offsets as printed on the module to be sure they matched the menu settings - all good. What gives?? Re: [Elecraft] K144XV issues in K3S - audio distortion and fading signals over time
Have you double checked all of the connections in and out of the 2M module? I’ve found it’s important to remove the transverter’s top cover to do this — because it is possible when pushing cables into the female connectors blind, even being careful, to actually bend back the business end of the sockets. I don’t remember off hand which two it is, but I’ve had enough problems with them that I now support them from the rear with a screwdriver blade when seating cables to ensure a solid connection. Otherwise, it sounds offhand like there’s something bad on the transverter board … Grant NQ5T K3 #2091 KX3 #8342 > On May 24, 2019, at 1:28 PM, Hank wrote: > > > OK...here are some test results: > > - Neither problem occurs on 10m FM > > - The output power does also diminish on 2 meters - roughly follows the > reception "weakening". [Elecraft] K144XV issues in K3S
Hey Folks... I have noticed 2 unusual issues with my recently installed K144XV. I bought it used from a list member and installed it a few months ago. It seems to work ok but after some extended use (which recently begun) it is does 2 things: after it has been in use (even just monitoring) for local FM repeater work, the S-Meter on the K3S starts to read lower and lower (by as much as 3 S-Units) for the same repeater signal; and 2 - the audio becomes a little distorted on stronger signals (the ATT makes no difference in the audio distortion). The audio happens almost immediately after turning up the rig, but the signal "weakening" takes 10 to 15 minutes of the transverter being active (active band on K3S). It will occur faster it is being used (transmitting). I have it set to very low power (display reads -6db), and it will still show "weakening" on the S-Meter during reception after using it. I noticed it fist doing some longer packet transmissions, but it will also happen after a period of time of just listening. The audio distortion is not as noticeable on signals below S-9, but listening in headphones will reveal the distortion is still there. The K3S currently has the standard TXCO installed and no reference lock on the K144XV. The 13khz filter is installed in the main receiver. I have no external reference board installed in the K3S. I have ordered the higher stability TXCO for the K3S and the K144XV reference lock, but have not received them yet from Elecraft. The audio on HF is OK and the S-Meter does not seem to "weaken" in a similar fashion when monitoring strong net signals over time. Any ideas? [Elecraft] K144XV on digital modes - disappearing power SOLVED
Dear Elecrafters, I do appreciate the help from Elecraft support, senior supporter Gary and Wayne himself. After quite a few mails back and forth Wayne did the mail with "Have you tried setting the K3’s transmit ALC off? If there really is per-mode behavior, this should help. First do a TUNE to establish ALC control level, then set CONFIG:TX ALC to OFF. Exit the menu. Now power control is open-loop; you can still adjust the PWR control, but it is only adjusting drive, without using ALC." I have not been using it very much – just a few FM QSOs. I have not seen any problems. Now I have just started using K144XV on digital modes – especially FT8 (42% TX and 58% RX). I started out selecting 10W output. After 4 minutes the output suddenly felt to a few mill watt. Starting out with 5W or even 2W produced exactly the same result. But without regard to the starting point I could get normal output again just by changing the output a little bit. It did not matter whether I increased or decreased my power a bit. I did not hear any fans starting up and I could not feel any heating at any sides of the K3. Can anyone explain what is going on – what I am doing wrong – what I can do to keep the output stable? Re: [Elecraft] K144XV on digital modes - disappearing power
This problem has nothing to do with setting the proper ALC level. Both KB7Q and I have observed this behavior after carefully setting up our K3s for WSJT-X operation with the K144XV. KB7Q found if he ran JT65 in USB mode the power setting behavior of the K144XV was normal but if he ran in DATA A mode it was anomalous. I have had the exact same problem while running MSK144 in DATA A mode. Both of us observed the same “cure” as Kjeld: slight movement of the power control restored normal power output. Neither of us had this problem while running SSB or CW. The two K3 transceivers we made these observations on were SN 7xx and SN 4611, which are widely spaced in date of production and board revision levels. When KB7Q upgraded to a K3S, using the same K144XV module, the anomalous power setting behavior in DATA A mode did not occur. I have a very strong suspicion that this problem is related to the new firmware that is shared by both the K3 and K3S. It works correctly in the latter case but not the former. Unfortunately I cannot revert to a pre-K3S firmware version. 73 Gary, N7IR Kjeld, Are you driving the audio up to 4 bars on the ALC meter with the 5th bar flashing? This is the "zero ALC" point for the K3, KX3 and KX2 transceivers. Without sufficient audio The K3 will "power hunt", and that may be what is happening. [Elecraft] K144XV Implementation and Trades/WTB
All: I picked up an K144XV, a KXV3A and a K3EXREF at a hamfest last weekend from the estate of an SK. It was boxed as if to say that the hardware is all I need to implement a GPS synchronized transverter in a K3 - minus the GPS Rx. I'm not sure that is the case. (I have a 10 MHz Zyfer GPS synced reference oscillator) The K3EXREF PLL disciplines the K3's 49.38 MHz timebase. I am reasonably certain that I need a K144REFLK board to tie the K144XV to the 49 MHz timebase. I assume that the firmware has been written to tie all this to the K3EXREF (It hadn't been shortly after the K3EXREF came out). Now the needy/horse trading part :) Anybody want to trade a K144REFLK board for my KXV3A (I already have one in the K3). I also need a KFL3B-FM 13 kHz crystal filter Thanks, Russ KD4JO __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K144XV Question
I have managed to destroy all of the TMP jacks on the K144XV inside the K3. The jacks’ center conductor is totally smashed. Questions: 1. Can I return the K3 settings back to a “no K144XV” state to disable totally the XV? (That is, all jacks/TMP plugs not energized)? 2. Has anyone removed damaged TMP jacks and replaced them? Can this be done by the owner, or should the entire XV be shipped to Elecraft? I am not a fan of TMPs! Thanks in advance. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV & KRX3A, install which first in K3s?
Carl, The KRX3 must go in first. If you think about it, the K144XV fits above the KRX3, so if you install the K144XV first, you will not be able to get the KRX3 in place below it. The K144XV instructions page 11 3rd checkbox tells you when to install the KRX3 *if* you had removed it. This is the time to install the KRX3. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/21/2015 2:27 PM, Carl Jón Denbow wrote: I seem to have a dilemma. I'm getting ready to install both the K144XV and the KRX3A in my new K3s. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Frequency Error
I just installed a 2nd receiver and the 2M ref lock. The KRX3A installation manual, which uses the new synths shows J4 of the new style main synth connected to REF IN on the 2M transverter. The ref lock installation manual shows J83 of the old style synth connected to REF IN and REF OUT connected to J2 on the KREF3 board. Absent advice from someone at Elecraft who knows, I would use J4 with the new synths and the J83 with a jumper to the KREF3 board with the old synths. 73 Bill AE6JV On 9/18/15 at 3:51 PM, bill4...@gmail.com (Bill Schwantes) wrote: Hi Folks, I need help. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV
I see no reference in the parts list of the K144XV to thermal pads. Neither is there any reference that I have read to thermal pads in the installation instructions. Sure, heatsink compound, carelessly applied, can be messy but given there is an oft reported issue with heat and the K144XV it seems, unless there are thermal pads somewhere hidden in the procedure, compound between the aluminium slab wall of the K144XV and the K3 side panel might be a something worth trying. Below 146, 0.5mW drive gives 6 out. Above 146 it only gives 2 out. And swr does not change. Ideas? Re: [Elecraft] K144XV - More Advice Requested
The ref lock and TCXO options are not needed for normal work. I do have them both since I use mine to drive microwave transverters and I also run digital modes where it is desirable to have the smallest drift and absolute frequency predictability. At 2M for FM and casual CW/SSB work I doubt you need the options. Filters: FM covers AM. Be sure to assign the filters to each mode. The accessory connector has a few digital control outputs you can leverage. The manual explains the various ways to configure them, it is quite flexible. The FT-847 was a good VHF radio for me as long as you are not exposed to nearby strong local stations. For contesting on a mountain top as a rover it was hurting bad, even with an Inrad filter added. However if you want to operate satellite, it is really easy to do with the 2M/70cm cross banding capability. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K144XV-More-Advice-Requested-tp7581720p7581757.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K144XV - More Advice Requested
After my initial email regarding the K144XV, I went to work trying to sell stuff. As of today, I think I have enough to buy all I need for the K144XV option. I have some questions though. I'll get to those in a minute. As I stated before, the purchase of the K144XV is being done to both consolidate and simplify my station. I have just sold an ID-880H D-STAR radio which I used very little. I really don't much get on 2 m in the house - mostly when I'm piddling around town or back and forth to work. However, I do want the capability to work local repeaters. I have never done any terrestrial 2 m CW / SSB (although I did my share of satellite work in the late 90's and early 00's). I am interested in 2 m CW and have antennas I could modify for that; however, my tower is only 35' tall (about 10.5 m). I don't know if I'll be satisfied with that or not. All of that said, here are my questions: 1. I will need the FM filter to work local 2 m FM repeaters. If memory serves, the FM filter will also allow AM transmission. Is this correct or am I mistaken? 2. For 2 m SSB / CW work, I will need the K144RFLK (or it's at least recommended), correct? Does the K144RFLK lock to the standard TCXO or will I need the super-stable TCXO (KTCXO3-1) also? 3. I have a 2 m preamp left over from my satellite days (it's an Icom AG-35 that will allow transmit through). Is there a way to turn the preamp on from the K3 without having to install a bias-T and switch? I want to get as much bang for my buck as possible. I don't want to spend all this money and only be able to work 2 m FM with very limited 2 m CW. At the risk of expanding my station (something I do *not* want to do), I have limited access to an FT-847 that I could try before I buy. I could actually buy it cheaper than all that I think I need for the K144XV. The FT-847 does not have a very good HF transceiver, but the the VHF/UHF part is great. I appreciate all advice or suggestions. Thanks. 73, Joel - W4JBB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Option
There was talk by Wayne when the K144XV was introduced that the K144XV could be wired for a separate 144rx ports, but I have seen nothing written up so far. I noticed that there was a 3 pin header (normally with jumper) near the unused cable outlets marked 144IF in the box cover. Investigation revealed that by removing the jumper and connecting a coax centre conductor to the centre pin of the 3 and the coax shield to the previously unused pin (ground) I had a separate 144 receiver Input. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Option
Hi Dave, Boy, it sure would be GREAT if there were some way that the K144XV receive line could be routed out through the BNC connectors in the transverter module so you could enable the 2m receive by either adding a BNC jumper or an external receive-only preamp acoss those terminals! For those of us with tower mounted preamps on 2m, a separate 2m receive line would sure be convenient!!! Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Option
Thanks for all the replies regarding the K144XV option. For some reason, I never got them in my email reader - they seem to be filtered. Have I filtered myself? I do not know. I may purchase at a later date, but for now, I'll have to keep what I have. I have to sell the ID-880H and have it fully fund the K144XV. Unfortunately, that is not possible given all the additional equipment I'd have to buy to keep my current capabilities. To have it replace what I have, I'd have to purchase the 13 MHz FM filter which I do not have. However, that is not to say that I will *not* buy that option. Years ago, I was big into amateur satellites. That era of my amateur radio hobby ended with the lack of reliable linear transponder satellites and the restrictions that came about after the events of 9/11/2001. This is neither the time nor the place for political arguments regarding those decisions and I do not debate news or politics anymore. That said, I still have a couple of 2m antennas I used for satellite work. One of them is a dual-polarized (not circular) Cushcraft that might work nicely for terrestrial 2m CW. Terrestrial 2m CW really intrigues me. 73, Joel - W4JBB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K144XV Option
Sorry if this is a duplicate post. I think I sent it from the wrong email. I am looking at further downsizing my station and I have a question about the K144XV transverter for the K3. My current setup is the K3 (160 - 6 m), the P3, and an Icom ID-880H (D-STAR). I am on D-STAR less than once per month. For that matter, I rarely get on 2 m when I'm at home. Two meters is my to-and-from work and my out-and-about driving band. I don't do mobile HF because it's too much to fiddle with and I drive a company work truck (I probably wouldn't do mobile HF unless someone else was driving). Even though I do not get on 2 m from the house very much, I'd still like the capability and I'm in the process of simplifying and minimizing my life. I thought the K144XV would help with that. What are the opinions of the K144XV? All good and bad are welcome. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Option
Hello Joel, I have the K144XV built-in tranvsverter option for the K3, and I am very pleased with it. Here are some thoughts about it: On the POSITIVE side, it is very stable in frequency, and allows me to operate 2m EME without changing rigs or cables ;-) However, it only has ONE coaxial connector on the rear of the radio, so you lose the ability to have a separate receive input like you can on all the other bands. The option for a 2m transverter set up is ELIMINATED when you install the K144XV. So, I had to add a pair of coaxial relays on the back of the rig to switch the rig to connect to my preamp and receive line on RX, or my amplifier on TX. Since it only has 10w output maximum, I had to add a solid state intermediate amp in the TX line to drive my 8877. If all you want to do on 2m is use it barefoot for repeaters, or have it run through some sort of RF-SWITCHED solid state amp, you should have not trouble. Of course, I don't have the FM filters in mine anyway, so I couldn't use it on FM repeaters even if I wanted to. The only issue I have with it is that it seems to be a little off frequency on 2m, but I am sure there must be some way to tweak just the 2m frequency. I know when I still had the option of using the external 2m transverter ports, there was an option for tweaking the K3 frequency to adjust for variations in the frequency of the transverter xtals. Hope this helps! GL and VY 73, Lance On 12/7/2013 2:10 PM, Joel Black wrote: Sorry if this is a duplicate post. I think I sent it from the wrong email. Use of the K144RFLK will provide better K144XV frequency stability. This device locks the transverter's internal oscillator to the TCXO. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Option
Hi Joel - I did what you are considering - downsizing, sort of. I had the K3/100 and P3 combo along with an IC-207H dual band radio. I rarely ever got on 440, so I decided to add the K3 internal 144 MHz module. As a bonus, selling the dual-bander paid for a good part of the K144XV's price! Installation was pretty easy, and the unit works perfectly. I have the FM filter in the K3 so I can (and do) use the local repeaters when I get in the mood. In addition, having CW/SSB capability on 2 meters is pretty cool. A long time ago I had a Yaesu FT-736R and I did a little CW operating on the band, and I missed that capability. Anyway, the K144XV puts out a max of about 10-12 watts, so unless you've got a tower and a nice high-gain yagi on top of it, you aren't going to be doing Worked All States or EME. I gave my 2 meter signal a little more muscle by building the 80 watt all-mode linear amp that was designed by W6PQL and featured in the May 2013 issue of QST. Here is a link to the amp info on his web site: http://www.w6pql.com/2_meter_80w_all_mode_amplifier.htm Bottom line: a nice addition to your K3 and a way to eliminate a piece of equipment from your desk. [Elecraft] [K144XV] SWR indication
Folks, Can't seem to find this in the user's manuals. The K144XV internal 2 meter transverter for the K3 presumably has a 50 ohm output, but no antenna tuner. I'd like to use one with a commercial antenna that has a nominal impedance of 50 ohms, fed by a 30 foot run of LMR400 coax. I wonder if there is any indication from the K144XV if the SWR is out of line. What would it do? Unfortunately, my VNA doesn't reach 2 meters, so I'd be guessing all the way. Maybe someone has some experience with this? [Elecraft] K144xv power output
Hi all, I should reduce the output power of the K144XV to a level of less than 1 Watt. I need this because I use the 144 MHz band to drive my microwave transverter. I tried to adjust the parameter config XV1 PWR to the value L .01 but the output power does not drop below 3 W. Then I thought of two possible solutions: 1) insert an attenuator on the cable IF IN of the K144XV 2)try adjusting the trimmer R87 on the K144XV Which is the best solution? 73, Fausto IK4NMF __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K144XV
Today I installed the module K144XV. It all works ok but I noticed several spurious signals received, in particular each 12.5 kHz at a level of around -140 dbm indicated on P3, plus some pretty strong signals such as at 144.4165 to S7 and others. Obviously signals are present with the antenna disconnected and with a 50 Ohm load on the antenna connector. I exclude the origin from the outside of the transceiver, I disconnected all possible noise sources such as switching power supplies and similar. It 's normal or there may be a problem? That sounds like a P3 cable problem. There have been reports of faulty BNC cables supplied in a batch that was bad from the supplier. Try contacting Elecraft and describe the problem to them. Also while you are waiting to call Elecraft over the week-end, make sure that ALL of the cable routing is as it was before the installation. That covers any existing cables you may have moved around. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Strange Readings
Jim, it was a ground loop problem caused by the metal spacer. You'd have to have a very early K144XV for it to be present. Here's how to tell if yours needs modifying as described in the mod instructions: This change was incorporated into the K144XV assembly process in September, 2010. All K144XV's shipped after September are already modified. If you are unsure, remove the K3 top cover and inspect the K144XV module mounted on the left side panel. If there is a screw in the hole directly above the Elecraft name on the top label, the modification has not been done. The K144XV module is directly under the K3 top cover mounted on the left side panel (when the front of the K3 is toward you). The label says Elecraft K144XV 2M Module. You probably don't need to completely remove the top cover. Just lift it enough to see that label. Note that there should be two empty holes in the top - that one and one closer to the side panel (unless Elecraft has redesigned the cover to remove the superfluous holes). Note that there SHOULD be a screw in a hole just to the right of the word STATUS on the edge farthest from the side panel. If yours has a screw in that location (instead of an empty hole), let me know and I'll dig up a copy of the mod sheet for you. I can no longer find it on the Elecraft web site. 73 Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Jim Miller Sent: Saturday, May 18, 2013 1:59 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Strange Readings Will someone please describe this center spacer so I can verify whether it is in mine or not? I've noticed strange behavior on both the W2 watt meter and a cross-needle meter when using my K3 on 2 meters. Just curious if anyone has had problems like this? In SSB mode, keying the mic without any audio causes the watt meter to show about 3 watts output power and 3:1 SWR. However If I hold the TUNE button and put out a carrier It shows the expected 7-10 Watts forward with normal low SWR. It also appears to show normal readings while speaking into the mic, but goes to the unusual readings with in between audio peaks. Both my early edition K144XV were not unconditionally stable and were swr intolerant I think you will find that the 3:1 swr is because it is oscillating out of band. Try listening on a scanner. Dave, Yes that is exactly what it appears to be doing. My frequency counter is showing RF at 153.600 MHz regardless of what part of the band it is tuned to. I removed the K144XV Reference Lock Board and there was no change. Is there anything that can be done to correct this, or do I need to send it back to Elecraft? Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Problem
Might double check your xvtr settings in the menus and make sure they look right. If you have a recent good config backup of the K3 you can try restoring it. Other things to try: - Direct setting the frequency via the keypad. - If you have quick memories assigned to M1-4 keys to set 2M favorite frequencies try that. - Check to see if you can hear a known frequency like packet on 144.390MHz or a FM repeater. Perhaps the .XXX portion of the dial is accurate as is the xvrter and the XXX. portion of the display frequency is corrupt. - Spin the dial either side of 146.0 causes the xverter to switch local LOs. Any of these methods might get you back were you belong. - Mike -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K144XV-Problem-tp7569906p7569935.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K144XV TX Spur
I did not see any threads on this issue, so here goes. I added the K144XV to my K3 several years ago. I don't think I have ever used it aside maybe from an FM contact to check it out. My new 23cM transverter has a 144MHz IF so I will now be suing the K144XV. While setting up the 2M power out, I noticed the Bird wattmeter registering around 3W with no audio in SSB mode. Same thing in CW if I depress XMIT on the K3 with the CW key open. According to my counter the energy is around 150.4 MHz- drifting up slowly in frequency at 2.8W regardless of drive level to the transverter. Has anyone else seen this? Did I miss an update on the 144XV? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Are you sure the transverter is actually transmitting on the desired frequency also? Or is the PLL unlocked and on a semi-random frequency. [Elecraft] K144XV?
Is the optional 5V signal on the ANT3 center pin intended to be a T/R signal to a remote amp/preamp? I'm just trying to learn a bit about 2m stuff. What sort of external amps/preamps have folks found useful? Are the preamps/amps mast mounted, combined or separate? Re: [Elecraft] K144XV?
Could be used for TR signal to a mast preamp or an external amp, but most of those I have seen need 12V by deafult. I suspect the 5V is more useful for transverter TR switching for simplified connections (fewer wires). You could have the transverters mounted on a tower making this method more attractive. Several transverters support this method of switching. They in turn usually have external PTT. By the time you get a chain of VHF+ equipment hooked up on towers and such, you are probably looking at a sequencer and/or careful use of indicator contacts on TR relays for positive switchover control vs a pure timing based operation (hoping the relay switches in time, every time). -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K144XV-tp7567376p7567386.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K144XV vs XV144
Not a comment on the K144XV vs XV144, but one about running eme. Use of a low-noise figure preamp is not optional for eme, so transverter sensitivity is less important an issue, though its nice if it is low. I use a DEMI 144-28 transverter with 0.8 dB NF (unmeasured) and 17-dB conversion gain. With my 0.1 dB NF preamp (26-dB gain) this produces a S4 noise floor in the K3 on 28-MHz (a bit too much gain). This will result in impacting large signal handling but I have no issues for that on 2m since the nearest active 2m eme station is in BC about 1300km away. Use of an external preamp is encouraged on 2m and higher freq if one is into working CW/SSB/digital long-range, weak-signal contacts. You can't work em if you can't hear me! My 2m-eme receiving system MDS= -153 dBm. (-172 dBm with antenna gain). K3 diversity receiving makes eme a real joy! Best Wished for the Holidays! Ed - KL7UW we will be attending Dayton this year! Re: [Elecraft] K144XV vs XV144
Both have a similar low noise, high gain front ends, Ron, and there is little to choose between them as regards performance. There have been several comparisons between the two on the reflector and a search on the nabble archive might prove useful. In your application, with an external amplifier I think I would be inclined to go for the XV144. (I have both) 73 de David G4DMP In a recent message, Ron W3ZV w...@verizon.net writes I am looking to add 2m to my K3. I need to decide whether to get the internal transverter or the external. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV vs XV144
I chose the internal for several reasons the first was to cut down on desk top clutter even with less power output nice package. I have a 350w brick and for digital modes and a little SSB it makes more than enough power with my M2 34' boom 2m yagi that takes care of the heavy lifting for a little pistol. The key also is to use a very good mast mounted preamp. With the internal module it also gives you direct frequency readout very easy, it will do the same with a external also but a little extra setup. All in all a very nice package bundled all in the radio. 73, Fred/N0AZZ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Ron W3ZV Sent: Friday, December 14, 2012 11:56 PM To: Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] K144XV vs XV144 I am looking to add 2m to my K3. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV vs XV144
The receiver sensitivity of the XV144 was good enough to do moon bounce with no other preamp at the antenna. Had about 120 ft of BuryFlex. JT65, and did not drive the power amp to more than 300 watts. I might have gotten more but a bias resistor in the amp was bad at the time. 73, John KH7T On 12/15/2012 12:25 AM, elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net wrote: Send Elecraft mailing list submissions to elecraft@mailman.qth.net To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net You can reach the person managing the list at elecraft-ow...@mailman.qth.net When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than Re: Contents of Elecraft digest... Re: [Elecraft] K144XV ordering
The K144RFLK is strongly recommended. There were frequency stability issues with the 116 and 118 MHz crystals (though believe this was improved sometime in the last year or so) used for the injection frequency at the tranverter. The K144RFLK removes that problem, because the root frequency reference will be the TCXO in the K3 (or the K3EXREF source if you have a 10 MHz lab reference avaiable). 73, matt W6NIA On Sat, 08 Sep 2012 16:42:54 -0500, you wrote: To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K144XV ordering From: SRD software.research.developm...@gmail.com Date: Sat, 08 Sep 2012 16:42:54 -0500 Hi, I'd like to make sure I've got this complete (always did hate the order page). Today K144XV safely arrived from FAIRS Hq., Floyd VA The European 144 MHz championship is held this weekend. Started to install the module and found no IF connectors on my KXV3-1 (2008) board. Can someone let me know where to go next and connect the IF? Really hate missing the major annual VHF contest. Do I need to buy a new KXV3A board or it can be replaced? So sorry, so sad 73 Vic US5WE UARL VHF committee __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

If you're trying to install it internally, you'll need the KXV3A. 73, Scott, N9AA On 8/30/12 1:20 PM, Vic Goncharsky wrote: Today K144XV safely arrived from FAIRS Hq., Floyd VA The European 144 MHz championship is held this weekend. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV (Urgent)
Vic, The K144XV is the internal transverter, and you must have the KXV3A to connect it. If you call right now and beg them to ship it overnight, you may have it in time for the weekend. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/30/2012 1:20 PM, Vic Goncharsky wrote: Today K144XV safely arrived from FAIRS Hq., Floyd VA The European 144 MHz championship is held this weekend.
