[Elecraft] Thanks!
Thanks to all who suggested a solution! Most of the hams on this list could easily work for the engineering or design departments at Elecraft. Sadly I am not one of them. I didn’t realize the mistake I was making when I did a EEinit on my K3S without a current config file. Fortunately Elecraft keeps config files on new radios or ones they repair. They emailed me the config file they saved when the rig was in for repair about a year ago. Thanks Rob! To those of you who don’t qualify for Elecraft employment. Make sure you save a current config file before doing anything as DRASTIC as an EERint. Many thanks to the many people who replied both on the reflector and privately, with a great deal of thoughtful advice. [Elecraft] Thanks to all for many great suggestions about a PTT Switch
Following Kevin Stover’s and Don Wilhelm’s advice – a normally open push button mounted in a film can or in a Sharpie cap respectively -- I have settled on fitting a button switch into a tennis ball . . . . If I drop it, it might come right back With their usual vile green color it’ll be hard to lose track of on the operating desk Squeezing the ball in between button presses would be good hand exercise With a little dexterity and the right placement of the right size button it could be used as either a hand switch or a foot switch It would give the operator and the dog something to do when the band goes dead And, the housing of the switch would be free -- I live about three blocks from a municipal tennis court. Suitable candidates for a PTT switch body abound on the surrounding sidewalks. I guess the players around here really aren’t very good. For a couple of photos of the joys of playing with Elecraft radios, check out my operation in the 2017 ARRL DX CW contest. The photos don't include my K3, and would not likely be considered suitable for publication, but anyway: http://floridacontestgroup.org/contest-gazette/ And check out page 10 of the March 2017 issue. Contesting is good when you head to the salt water! BTW, I have since discovered that the Prius, when parked with the car "ON", will keep the 12 volt battery pretty well charged from the hybrid battery, with little or no RFI. 73 - Jim K8MR -Original Message- From: Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft <e...@elecraft.com> To: Wayne Burdick <n...@elecraft.com> Cc: Elecraft Reflector <elecraft@mailman.qth.net>; KX3 <k...@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Fri, Sep 1, 2017 7:28 am Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Thanks for all the portable operation photos so far Wayne,These should be forwarded to Margaret and me for our promo use.Ericelecraft.com_..._> On Aug 29, 2017, at 2:50 PM, Wayne Burdick <n...@elecraft.com> wrote:> > I’ve received so many great photos already that I won’t be able to thank everyone personally. I posted a while back about not being able to drive my KPA500 to full power on 6M. Trying to drive it beyond 200 watts resulted in a HI SWR fault. I initially blamed it on the antenna, cables, connectors, etc. etc. It worked fine on a dummy load. But changing antennas and cables and so on resulted in the same problem. Next, I hooked up my ICOM 706MKIIG. No problem! Aha! something’s wrong with the K3S. But it worked on the dummy load. Scratched my head a while and finally decided the K3S was putting out a spurious signal of some kind. No problem with a dummy load because it didn’t care what frequencies it was seeing. There was an additional problem: No transmit with mode set to USB or LSB. Change mode to CW, tap the key, switch back to USB, output fine. So I sent the K3S off to Elecraft. Yep! Spurious signals being generated. They replaced Q7 and 8 on the KPA3A, set bias, and did tx again calibration. They also replaced the KLPA3A board. Just got it back today and all is well. [Elecraft] Thanks for the help.
I finally was able to get my upgraded K-3 to recognize my K-3 utility via USB. I deleted the utility from my computer and reloaded it, then left the K-3 with the power disconnected over night. This morning I connected the USB cable to the computer and then started it. I waited to make sure it was recognized by the computer. I then connected it to my K-3 with the power still off. I connected the power cable and started the utility. When I turned the K-3 on, it connected with the utility and I was able to use it. There must have been something corrupted in the system. Everything works as it should now and the upgrades have also helped the K-3. Thanks to everyone for the advise given. What baud rate is K3 set to? Should be USB if using the USB to USB cable. I don't think the computer will connect to the radio if radio is not ON. You do not use a KUSB with the KIO3B upgrade. You should also get the new P3 "Y" cable to connect the P3 to the K3. Re: [Elecraft] Thanks to all
Louis, Do you have the menu RS-232 set to USB? It should be to use the USB connection - see page 63 of the K3S manual. HF-TRN and TRN refer only to the band encoding - see page 21 of the K3S manual. The computer may recognize the K3 USB to serial converter with power off the K3, but there is not much that can be done unless the K3S is powered. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/10/2016 8:12 PM, Louis Ives wrote: I would like to thank everybody that responded to my questions about upgrading my K-3. Re: [Elecraft] Thanks!
Tom; Lots of good suggestions to your original questions and I'll add a couple more. I built my K3 from a kit and it was an absolute joy to put together (much more than I expected). The instructions are all very clear and easy to follow. So, if you take the plunge into assembling your own: 1) Get a good anti-static mat with a wrist strap and always use it while building. I grounded my Radio Shack mat via the third pin on a wall outlet (and I made sure it was a good ground with a 3-prong circuit tester beforehand). 2) A big plastic fishing tackle box like those sold at Wal-Mart was invaluable for putting all the many different sized screws in separate cubbyholes. Also, get a little screw size chart like those sold in Home Depot or Ace. After a little use you'll be able to tell a 3/8th from a half-inch easily as well as differentiate the different head types, washer types and so on. 3) A quarter-inch nut driver and/or crescent wrench is practically essential as well as a set of tiny screwdrivers. Harbor Fright sells these for a couple of bucks. They also sell magnetic parts cups that come in handy when you get a set of tiny bits together ready to install, too. 4) Have a clear table or work surface ready in advance. Arrange good lighting and a big magnifying glass on standby---especially if you are an old guy like me! 5) Lastly, budget your time for building---don't rush or try to get it done quickly. I found the whole process of building my K-Line rather therapeutic, like painting, hiking or enjoying a good concert. I will always look back at the good time I had putting it together and then utilizing it to go out and snag some great DX out of the airwaves with great fondness. A lot of folks are selling their K3s now to fund a purchase of a K3S---but I would rather hang onto the first rig I ever built and make upgrades now and then instead (but I'm a sentimental old fart). I guarantee you will enjoy the building process and you'll save a little dosh that can be put towards a better antenna or improvement down the road. Btw, the general coverage bandpass filter you asked about lets you SWL the shortwave broadcast and MW broadcast bands with much greater signal strength---they're suppressed without it. As long as you have the 13kHz or 6kHz filter you'll be good to go for SWLing---but just either filter is sufficient for casual SWLing as I sometimes do. I do recommend adding the ATU and sub-receiver option if you can afford to do so (and want to chase DX). The sub-receiver is great for split operations and I can't imagine not having one---but that's just me. You can always add these and all the other goodies later on but it is more convenient to install some options like these early on as the sub receiver will need to be removed and reinstalled if adding more filters or some other options that fit underneath it. I've rambled more than I intended to but when I think back to the time when I was getting ready to spring for the K-Line I had lots of questions, too---and I'm glad I did my homework as it paid off well once the big boxes from Aptos arrived. Just a note to thank everyone not only for their responses to my pathetic plea :) but also for all the information I have picked up just reading these threads. Fyi I did fire it up today & it only took me 15 minutes to realize the paddle plug does not go in the key socket :( I did some 'off the air, in test mode' transmitting & setting up my cw mode - boy am I have to shake the rust off after ~20 years of not using a paddle. Then I started listening on 20 ssb with my new 80/75/40 fan dipole. There was S79C working 5 up on 14.260 & abt a S5 on the meter. Unfortunately I haven't gotten to getting the Heil headset to work on the mic side, that's for tomorrow. Bottom line - after the initial intimidation I'm really motivated to get going on the air, tho I have worked S79 in the past :) Thanks again & 73 Jerry k1tgx __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Same here, and I had the same question: with a K3 and a KX3, why was I keeping the FT847 and the FT950 and all the related stuff I hadn¹t used in years? He who dies with the most toys wins? Answer was to find a junior high school amateur radio club that needed HF equipment. Not at all hard to do. I do. It's more fun to have more radios. Even though my K3 is my favorite, I still like playing with my Icom 706, or the weird handheld 40M radio, or that 10M FM handheld with all the birdies. Oh, and my K2 that's in backup. One of these days I'm going to end up with a KX3. Now that you mention it, maybe I have a problem. On Sat, 31 Jan 2015, Kenneth Talbott wrote: Ditto! [Elecraft] Thanks to Elecraft this forum
Just a few words of thanks to both Elecraft and the members of this forum. Over the years I've had questions that for me, eluded answers and between the forum and the helpful people in tech at Elecraft, answers have been found. If I can't find the answers in my searches, I then like to ask here first and if I still need help, ask for tech help at Elecraft. What I very much appreciate is the low noise on the forum, meaning the lack of snide and belittling remarks which only serve to serve the sender's ego. I like how the vast majority of replies to everyone's questions are helpful and encouraging. When I've contacted Elecraft, they have always returned a call, returned an email in a timely manner and have always been able to help. With this kind of product and support from the company and this forum, I am a solid and happy member of the Elecraft family. 73, Gary KA1J --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. http://www.avast.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Thanks for your comments, Will a casual SSB operator enjoy the K3?
Good afternoon, My thanks to everyone. I received a tidal wave of positive comments on the K3, many from hams like myself. It seems the radio is so versatile that it can be used in a simple application or in a most complex manner. It truly could be the forever radio as it constantly evolves while giving the user the ability to explore new avenues. Perhaps my interest now is in SSB and casual conversation. That may change and the rig could grow with me. Again, my thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and ideas. I am going to look for a good used rig but I don't think I will find many sellers on this message board. Hope to join you soon. Tom, There are sellers of K3s on this message board from time to time. I am always curious as to why they are selling since I would never sell.I think some own two K3s and maybe selling the spare one. But, from what I have seen these sellers sell fast. Will I be in over my head with the technology side of the radio? Re: [Elecraft] Thanks for your comments, Will a casual SSB operator enjoy the K3?
Tom, Don't give up looking for a used rig. It took me a while but I found one with at least 80% of the features I wanted and I am a DXer of 65 years experience so the wants were extensive! For basic operating, you should be able to find one used. However, getting one from Elecraft directly is a sure bet and you can, as others have said, start pretty basic and add on easily. You won't be disappointed with the K3. 73 Don K5AQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Thanks ELECRAFT
I am really pleased with the performance of my Elecraft gear and the great support that they provide. It is also impressive that they think of all the little things too. For example: -From comments that were made here on this list, I knew that I would have to make up a new power cord for my P3 after installing the SVGA board. When the new board is installed there is more than 500 mA of current required so the P3 can no longer be powered from the K3 power jack. When my new P3SVGA board arrived I was pleased to see that they had thought to INCLUDE a new P3 power cord. -I ordered one of the new power cords to run the KPA500 on 220 volts instead of 120 volts. I know my KPA500 kit came with both sets of fuses but of course I could not remember where I put the fuses for 220 volt operation. When the new power cord arrived it also INCLUDED a set of the correct fuses. Thanks ELECRAFT. Re: [Elecraft] Thanks Elecraft -- HK0NA DXpedition
Although smaller than most of the other dxpeditions, our trip to Tiree (Inner Hebrides, MS0WRC) last October used 4 K3's (all owned by team members) and one FT2K. We made 12500 Q's in the week on SSB and CW and continually got unsolicited complimentary audio reports from them. There was one posting on Youtube from a Russian in his car working me on 20m and I have to say my audio sounded great! :) The one audio complaint we got was from the Yaesu. The other issue we found in the week was a noise which we originally thought was interaction but despite fitting stubs we could not clear it. It turned out to be phase noise from the Yaesu! No problems at all with the 4 K3's and a great time was had by all :) The K3 is a fabulous dxpedition radio, we only had one KPA500 and that was on the CW station. That is one very boring amplifier, it just sat in the corner and worked its socks off ;) Thanks guys 73 Ian -- Ian J Maude, G0VGS SysOp GB7MBC HB9DRV-9 DX Clusters If you feel you would like to donate to help the running of the cluster, please visit http://www.gb7mbc.net. Re: [Elecraft] Thanks Elecraft -- HK0NA DXpedition
When it comes to amplifiers, boring is definitely good. A long time ago I was operating a DX contest at a multi-op. One of the amplifier power supplies was in a heavy steel cabinet on casters underneath the operating table about 4 feet away. It was about 3 am and very quiet in the shack (CW contest and only a few people awake/operating) when the capacitor bank in the power supply let loose. I saw the flash first and a split second later felt the BOOM. It was like being in a house that was just hit by lightening and literally sounded like a shotgun going off next to my head; and I was wearing a headset. Kinda wakes ya up :)) On 2/9/2012 1:20 PM, Ian Kahn wrote: snip The K3 is a fabulous dxpedition radio, we only had one KPA500 and that was on the CW station. [Elecraft] Thanks! RE: Has my KPA500 failed?
It was the TX1 setting. I know that I have never touched that since day one. But it is working now. Thanks to all who replied. Zack - Original Message - 4...@comcast.net, flexra...@flex-radio.biz Sent: Tuesday, February 7, 2012 8:34:44 PM Subject: re: Has my KPA500 failed? Iain, I have a 5000A RX2 and don't use a KPA 5000 but I do have a Kenwood 922A. Here are a couple of things for you to check. The easiest is to check the Antenna tab at the top of the main form and make sure the Switch Relay with TR section has something checked. On my rig it's TX1 (Red). For some reason, every time I power down PowerSDR I have to recheck it. With out it, your Flex won't key the linear. If that's okay, reset your database. I have had databases get corrupted and I was getting no power or low power out. You may want to go through the tabs first and write down your settings if you don't have them already. Good luck! [Elecraft] Thanks Elecraft -- HK0NA DXpedition
Surprised the lack of comments on this subject, unless I missed it. I do want to thank the Elecraft gang for their support of the HK0NA operation. I have been a ham for 57yrs and had NEVER chased a single HF DXpedition, but I got the bug with this one. What an amazing performance by the DXpedition team in all respects. The collection of operators was outstanding and the Elecraft gear sounded great. I wonder how many of the team had actually used a K3 before the DXpedition? I'm guessing more of them will be in the future! Hi Hi I worked them on 14 - band/modes with 100w and nothing but dipoles on 160/80/40/20. Thank heavens for antenna tuners. I was shut out on 80, 160 and 6m but heard them on both 80 and 160 well enough to call them, just too much competition and tropical QRN on their end. Thanks again Elecraft, well done. Re: [Elecraft] Thanks Elecraft -- HK0NA DXpedition
Thanks for noticing, Bill :) The HK0NA crew certainly did a great job, as have other recent DXpeditions using K3s, etc. DXpedition use of our gear has been a source of input and inspiration for us, and we provide a lot of support to the teams. Many hardware and firmware refinements now in shipping products can be traced to the kind of stresses put on the gear in inhospitable terrain and climate. We're now looking forward to a few micro DXpeditions featuring the KX3. 73, Wayne N6KR On Feb 7, 2012, at 8:20 AM, cqbi...@q.com wrote: Surprised the lack of comments on this subject, unless I missed it. Think about the cost of doing that for a small company the size of Elecraft, and you realize that it isn't easy. For one trip that I was aware of the details, Eric could provide two radios, but Icom gave them a half dozen 7600s and even paid shipping, but demanded exclusivity.. AND the original, highly successful, multiple record setting K3 DXped to VP6DX. That one set the stage for all the succeeding K3 DXpeds that have built upon the success of VP6DX. And HK0NA will NOT be the last. More K3 DXpeds are in the works. How time flies. It is a bummer that with my work and travel schedule they lost one of my five contacts with them but oh well life goes on. Maybe I will get lucky and they will recover them. Funny about TN2T because about two hours after I paid for the QSL card handling I received the LOTW confirms. Now I will be doubly confirmed for the Congo. [Elecraft] Thanks, another question, and a little background.
First, thanks to Wayne, Don, Bruce, and Jeff, for your helpful notes and answers to yesterdays inquiries. *I was afraid those answers would actually be pretty much set in software and or stone, but I can dream can't I? At any rate, thanks for a great product and group. *Question, is there room in the T1 for a Piezo to work in concert with or instead of the lites, to give audible cw readout? *In terms of freq read out, I have an MCount, Freqmite, StingerSinger, and Millenium QSYER, but wanting to work ped mobile with my 817ND, small antenna/MFJ1899T and some of the MFJ and or Maldol Monobanders,/and i know they're all compromise ants, but my expectations are pretty much in line with physics. Anyway, being blind as the proverbial bat/no hearts and flowers, just fact, I figure as few extra little boxes as possible between the rig and antenna, is the goal here. But if all else fails, one of my counters in a shirt pocket, with a short wire running from counters' ant jack and wound around the base of the rigs' antenna should make it happen well enough to make a go. *I have a number of memories programmed into the radio separated by Broadcast stations to divide groups, and this has been, and will continue to be a great adventure. It has a good general coverage receiver and dynamic range similar to the K2. And it's not a bad SSB rig, if you like that stuff. Apparently the board -- the carrier oscillator board -- is famous for having been built with caps that go bad after 20 years or so (my radio was built in 1991). This would never happen to an Elecraft product! -- Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Thanks to Al - N1AL and Elecraft
I just wanted to say THANKS to Al N1AL for his work on the P3 and the latest enhancements with ver .41 firmware. Being able to calibrate the display level indication makes it feel almost like an Agilent Spectrum Analyzer. (Yes I remember when you worked at H.P. Al.) Thanks again and Happy Holidays to everyone. 73, Bill - K6WLM KX1, K2, K3-100 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
