All is fine. I didn't have the "interfaces" line in my smb.conf. That, and samba was being stupid until I did /usr/bin/smbd. The interface works fine for NFS and SMB now with only one little bit of trouble. Haven't searched thoroughly to see if it's a client or server thing but I've seen posts on it. Okay, NFS works fine now but I still have to tweak my smb.conf some more I guess. FS says samba is running, is 139 the default port? Hauppauge. Probably one of the best supported brands under linux. S-Video in and Composite can be done with an adapater into the S-Video. RE: [eug-lug]Help the out-of-towner
It goes a little like this. As a shop we limit ourselves to a certain number of vendors otherwise they all call begging for more business. So if our few vendors don't have an older part such as P3 boards (though we can often still get Tyan dual CPU boards) then we encourage the buyer to check online. We often do our best to match prices online. We do have a storefront to maintain and I have to pay my bills. Our prices are often quoted as the retail price. We don't choose to carry cheap components and find that if something has a higher than acceptable return rate (in our case that often equates to "if more than two of said item fails within 4 to 6 weeks use we quit carrying said product". Lots of cheap hardware works fine under linux. Try Windows XP on a lot of that cheap crap and see how well your machine runs with the average user ;). Also why we limit ourselve on the amount of AMD we deal with. Far too many problems in the long run. A machine here or there for the knowledgeable is generally harmless but we don't push AMD into the hands of a beginner. VOS has the advantage of higher foot traffic, PCParts just carries *ahem* affordable stuff and you've seen that storefront. Lastly, I know alot of what works well with linux. When you created your CD's in XP did you just drag and drop files to them? What software did you use? The CD may be UDF in which case an older drive would have trouble reading from it or support may not be in your kernel. I would expect blanks to spit out an error rather than continue to spin. Re: [eug-lug]New year's resolution...
My primary concerns... Brightness, sharpness, size, PC compatibility. Dell's new 20" LCD is a serious upgrade over their old one. Thus the supposed price increase. The new panel they are using is a 16 or 25ms panel which is fast for something of that size. Lots of updates that make that a very worthwhile panel from the review I've read on it. But.. 20" is not big enough for more than one person to watch movies on AND it's not a 16:9 screen. Television is my last concern. I've been hunting for the right plasma without a tuner of any sort. Newer plasma technologies produce sharper pictures with truer colors and less 'pixeled' edges. Hitachi and Pioneer seem to have the most of what I want in a screen. But the models I want are considered "industrial use" and aren't available locally. The better plasmas also take a UXGA signal ((1600x1200) compressed into a 1024x1024 box) and various others such as WXGA (1280x768) producing a near perfect picture on a widescreen monitor. Alas, if you look at the price of a high end 24" LCD it is at least half the price of a good 42" plasma. Lastly, I already have the high performance PC part of the picture ;-) Mr O. --- Bob Miller <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > In November, Dell was selling their 20" 1600x1200 LCD panels > for $750. > They're back up to $1000 now. > > OTOH, the 1920x1200 24" displays (WUXGA, I think) look awfully > nice. > They're cheaper than a big screen TV, and they have a much > higher > resolution than HDTV. Anyone else overclock at all? What kind of problems? My machine is super stable at 3495Mhz but pushing it over that causes programs to just die whenever they want. Re: [eug-lug]new disk in old server
Um, here I am. You shouldn't have any real trouble booting off your PCI card. As long as the BIOS sees it as a boot device you're in good hands. Linux will just see your drives as /dev/hde or higher. As for booting from SCSI it loads the drivers during the boot. The SCSI BIOS handles getting the drive going. Linux just needs to know where it is from there (ie: /dev/sda). As for attaining full UDMA 100, keep dreaming. Unless you're striping a couple drives with 8Mb cache you'll never see near that performance. Kbob achieved over 90Mb/s that way. On average a 2Mb cache drive will yield about 40Mb/s and an 8Mb cache drive will yield upwards of 60Mb/s by itself. As for myself, I'm using a huge 160GB drive and do use lba32 for booting since WinXP is on the first 30GB. If your BIOS actually sees 20GB then it should see at least 32GB. In most systems that was the next barrier after 8GB. You may just need to 'fdisk' the drive to see how much the OS sees and experiment. That be all from me for now. Hope it's helpful. Two years tops for most of the emerging technology to float or fail. Re: [eug-lug]cable modem suggestions?
DOCSIS compliant. That's all you need worry about. You do NOT need a Windows box to set up. The right tech will know to log onto the secure server to register the modem. https://sas.r1.attbi.com Yes, it's still an "attbi" server but it's for registering the modem without using the stupid software. Truth is, owning your modem isn't much different from leasing it. You'll actually pay the same either way. If you get just the broadband you'll pay $52.95 a month. If you get the broadband and the most basic cable package you'll save $10 a month on each which means for just under $60 a month you can have basic cable and broadband. So if you watch TV you can basically have cable for about $5 more. Outages are more frequent on Comcast. I find myself rebooting my router to restore my connection almost weekly. Sometimes twice a week. Then again, it may just be my router. I've been too lazy to hook the other one up to find out. Even through the reboots and power cycles my IP has stayed the same for the past few months. I'm even running Apache on one box and a Slimp3 server on another and both are publicly available if you know the IP. Upside to owning your modem, it's yours, you can tweak it, but carefully or you can lose your service. Upside to leasing, it's theirs, if it's broken they have to replace it. Honestly, if someone is hooking it up for you and can't get it connected through Mozilla, don't trust them!! Half the guys doing installs these days are TV guys, not data guys. Most of them are freakin' clueless and amaze me at how dense they can be. So Gentoo is more like Windows then. If you go ahead and do all the available updates you're likely to break your machine but if you're selective things will run smoother :) Wait, Windows has branches too! You have the 9X family and the NT family! That's all for my mini rant. The Google part works. Not sure about the Voting Booth. It seems to have me counted already. Re: [eug-lug]Coffee
You cannon attach other device via the dock. The dock connects to the Zaurus to the PC as a "network adapter" and you can transfer data to and from that way. So, you can use a PC as a host for the Zaurus but only for sharing files and surfing the 'net. Any webcam, GPS, or other device needs to be plugged directly into the Zaurus. http://shop.store.yahoo.com/firewireshop/newusb11hosa.html There the USB card. Mr O. --- "T. Re: [eug-lug]Coffee
With the right hardware you can have two CF cards, just not likely two of something with an antenna on the end. You can also find a SD wireless card but I don't know if any of them work with the Zaurus. As for a USB I believe there's a CF USB adapter that one can buy that'll allow the Zaurus to be a host. Two things. The "Google" search bar doesn't work and the Poll section isn't working properly. All testing done in Mozilla. Sometime in the future if my web skillz improve I wouldn't mind helping out with the page. Right now it's a work in progress. Re: [eug-lug]Wanted: DDR RAM (PC2700 = 333 Mhz) any size okay
DDR is never too fast. Prices exorbitant compared to the same quality stuff or compared to the cheapest PriceWatch prices? Often times you'll spend less than $20 more for something locally and perhaps even only $10 more depening on what you need :) For instance.. Googlegear has Kingston PC2700 512MB for $83. Would you pay $95 to have a stick in your hands tomorrow afternoon? Kingston comes with a lifetime warranty too ;) --- Marc Baber <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > My last request for memory worked out so nicely (Thanks, > Garl!) I > thought I'd try Eug-Lug again.
