Removing a Site from an Organisation

2002-03-26 Thread Gian Sartor

Hi All,

We are planning to remove one of our Exchange
sites from our Organisation and I was wondering if anyone has done this before
or knows of any good documentation on this subject? So far I have found:
Q152959; Q184535; Q241622; Q189286; I have also been to Swynk.com and looked
through archive of this list but, having done all that, I am still not confident
thatI have all the information I need. Any help regarding this would be
most appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Public Folders Home server

2002-03-26 Thread Dave Vantine

I am in the final stages of moving to a new exchange server using Ed
Crowely's Server move method. The old server was the first exchange server
in the site. All the mailboxes have been moved and I believe I have covered
all of the items in the items in both ECSMM and Q152959. My concern is when
I look at the properties of most of the Public folders they still show the
Home Server to be the old server under the Advance properties tab. Only
those that I explicitly changed following these documents e.g. OAB,
Sched+Free show the home server to be the new one. I would have assumed that
all the public folders would have automatically changed. Do they have to be
individually changed or did I miss something.

Thanks
-Dave Vantine

Because of the limitation of 5.5 whereby all mailboxes are held in one
store, if you ever have to restore a mailbox (or even the whole
machine!)you will have to restore the whole IS. Therefore, taking your
restore hardware into consideration, you need to decide how fast you can restore
the entire IS. For instance, if your hardware restores tapes at 4GB per hour,
then an 18 GB store will take 4.5 hours. This might not be such an issue when
it's only one mailbox, but you'll have users banging your door down when their
whole server has gone down.

Spam connections to IMS

I am running
exchange 5.5 with the current service pack on NT4 server SP6a. I have my
server configured to stop relaying. Every now and again i get some spammer
trying to relay on my servers. Obviously they fail but is there any way
that I can log these attempts and trace them to the source?

Thanks,

  Because of the
limitation of 5.5 whereby all mailboxes are held in one store, if you ever
have to restore a mailbox (or even the whole machine!)you will have to
restore the whole IS. Therefore, taking your restore hardware into
consideration, you need to decide how fast you can restore the entire IS. For
instance, if your hardware restores tapes at 4GB per hour, then an 18 GB store
will take 4.5 hours. This might not be such an issue when it's only one
mailbox, but you'll have users banging your door down when their whole server
  has gone down.

RE: Do custom recipients require a license?

No, the only things that do are items that make ACCESS to the server (that's
why you get a CAL or Client Access Licence). DLs, CRs do not require
licences.

  not
  really.
  It
has helped us quite a bit.
  Even
being on the phone with MS, we were told to do BLB's AND the Store... its kind
  of a double check.
  If
we need to restore to a recovery server, we can restore an individual mailbox,
export the data needed to a pst, and import that into the user's mailbox..
seemless to the user, and no impact on the server.

Because of the limitation of 5.5 whereby all mailboxes are
held in one store, if you ever have to restore a mailbox (or even
the whole machine!)you will have to restore the whole IS.
Therefore, taking your restore hardware into consideration, you need
to decide how fast you can restore the entire IS. For instance, if
your hardware restores tapes at 4GB per hour, then an 18 GB store
will take 4.5 hours. This might not be such an issue when it's only
one mailbox, but you'll have users banging your door down when their
whole server has gone down.

OWA Windows ME

2002-03-26 Thread Sargent, Rob

We've had three or four staff experience this at different times over the
past year ... all of a sudden one day on their personal home PCs they cannot
get their e-mail through OWA from home. All have been using Windows ME.
They can get to any other website except our OWA page. And we've never
been able to get them re-connected despite some pretty serious (and very
time-consuming) troubleshooting - they've all had to re-install or upgrade
their operating systems. When the problem starts, they get IE errors
connecting to our OWA page - connection basically times out saying there's a
DNS error. We know their mailboxes are OK because if they use any other
machine they can get in.

Anybody had the same experience, or know of anything 'unique' with ME that
we should look at? fyi .. we're using Exch5.5sp4 on NT4sp6

I love mail essentials,
it has content filtering, inbound/outbound checking, can do the tag line addon,
and also can do pop3/etrn type retrivals. It uses the win2k embedded smtp
connector and you can put it in the dmz and act as the smtp relay to the
internal exchange server. You can block domains, keywords, phrases, and just
about everything else. Theres also auto-responders which I played with a bit,
that are nice.

RE: OT - RFC 2822 and the underscore from hell...

2002-03-26 Thread Toni, Randy

Looking for (at) the right RFC's would have helped - and even interpreting
the RFC correctly (regardless of which one I'm looking at) is something I
need to work on -- my mistake. My firewall references RFC 822 compliance
in the descriptor for a field where I can tweak the allowed hostname
characters for any incoming connections - so I just jumped into 2822 to
check it out and I got bogged down there. Thanks William and Ben for the
clear responses. I will fix my system this morning.

 Section 4.1.2 RFC2821:

To promote interoperability and consistent with long-standing guidance
about conservative use of the DNS in naming and applications (e.g., see
section 2.3.1 of the base DNS document, RFC1035std13 [22]), characters
outside the set of alphas, digits, and hyphen MUST NOT appear in domain
 name
labels for SMTP clients or servers. In particular, the underscore
 character
is not permitted. SMTP servers that receive a command in which invalid
character codes have been employed, and for which there are no other
 reasons

Subject: OT - RFC 2822 and the underscore from hell...

I'm trying to read through RFC 2822 to determine if an underscore is a
 valid
part of a hostname for a mail server. We allow it on our SMTP proxy (any
host that connects to us with a _ in the hostname is not a problem).
 But
there is one server out there that is killing our outbound messages
 because
a demo relay that I set up out in our DMZ has an underscore in the
 hostname.
This hostname shows up in the header and they whack it (kind of rude but
maybe they're right to do so...)

This is easy to fix but I'd like to know if I'm the one breaking the rules
here. Seems to me that the structure of a mail server hostname can
 contain
an underscore (or a period, etc.) as part of the atom or dot-atom
component in the local-part of the addr-spec (which meshes with the
filbert-flange and the grapple-grommet). This stuff makes me dizzy
 (dizzier?). I'm looking at
 http://www.zvon.org/tmRFC/RFC2822/Output/chapter3.html#addr-spec Is there
anyone who can unscramble this doc for me and help with the sanity check?

KMS Default Password not accepted

2002-03-26 Thread Stuart Pittwood

Hi,

I've just installed KMS into an existing organisation. The installation went without
a hitch, until I try to actually use KMS, when I right click Key Manager and choose
properties I am asked for a password, which I enter (the default password is password
I believe) and it then tells me that

The password you have typed is not a valid KMS password or KMS was unable to respond
to the validation request

I have also tried users (in this case Administrator) password and get the same error.

I have setup KMS in our test in envriorment exactly the same as I have done on the
live server and had no problems

Any ideas?

Thanks

Stu

I am in the process of upgrading from Exchange 5.5 to 2000 and having some
problems with Outlook Web Access:

When going to the OWA web page (server name/exchange), there is no splash
screen as there was in 5.5, just a sign on screen with a blank screen behind
it. Is this the expected behavior? It happened on both my test lab and
production servers.

I can't do an explicit log on to another person's mailbox. According to the
documentation, I should be able to put in server name/exchange/mailbox
name and put the administrators username and password in the log on screen.
It just repeats the log on screen 3 times and then gives a 401 error.
Implicit log on works correctly.

I'd have to say the DNS error is rather telling. I used ME and OWA for 2
years with out a hitch. Make sure their DNS servers can find your .com (?).
Have them try with an IP address. Reinstall the stack. I've had corruption
problems with ME networking before. No need to reinstall the OS just the
networking. Just a couple things to try.

RE: Exmerge extract errors

2002-03-26 Thread Aaron Kennedy

I suspected that my problems may have had something to do with the fact
that the user accounts that were associated with the mailboxes had been
disabled... we had re-enabled the accounts before using Exmerge, and I
was able to access their mailboxes, but I thought that something may
have still broken in the background.

I tried doing an exmerge on three other live and active accounts (and
people access and use these mailboxes every day... I even tried it on my
mailbox!) and I receive the exact same errors.

I have tried running exmerge on the server itself and from another PC
with the same results.

Exchange is most definitely not under heavy usage at the time (it's a
dual PIII-1GHz, 2GB of RAM and about 35-40 users...).

Reaching the end of my rope... :(

The only way to check is to make sure you can open the mailboxes from
that computer in outlook. That's how exmerge works. Outside of that are
you local to the exchange machine or pulling from remote? Is exchange
under heavy usage at the time?

Good Luck

I'm logged in as an administrator and have full permissions to the mail

run Exmerge actions on this store before, and nothing has changed since.
Exchange is running under the System context, so I can't log in as the
service account.

Any other thoughts...

Running Exchange 5.5 as a Calendar and Public folder Server

2002-03-26 Thread Scott Oliver

Dear group,

I am curious to know if it is possible to have an
exchange server 5.5 setup to share Calendar and Public Folders on a small
network while the actual email is handled via a POP account by an ISP. The
idea is to have the ability to use calendaring and public folder shares on a
network which has no true mail server. Any help would be awesome.

Thanks in
advance.

2002-03-26 Thread Ken Leyba

Sure but you would need separate username/passwords for Exchange and the POP
accounts. You could POP the mail from your ISP into Exchange and use the
full Exchange features. There are third party tools to do this or if SBS
2000 there is a article on the MS KB on how to do this.

We have been

If I disable

Sure but you would need separate username/passwords for Exchange and the POP
accounts. You could POP the mail from your ISP into Exchange and use the
full Exchange features. There are third party tools to do this or if SBS
2000 there is a article on the MS KB on how to do this.

For enterprise use, and multiple servers in multiple locations, I still
recommend RightFax.

With DID forwarding, just keeps working.

Also has FaxBack / Fax-on-Demand also integrated into product, with a single
Library of documents that can he attached to outgoing faxes.

Implemented 3 times, and love it.

RE: Fax solution for E2K and Exchange 5.5

2002-03-26 Thread Dennis Atherton

My first install was with 4.5 on OS/2.

I went to training at their site, and with that got to talk to the internal
people. I have found support really good, and really didn't have many
issues.

We had 12 phone lines - 4 DID and the rest analog. Ran both Fax Back and
faxing, with the CC:Mail connector to start, then Exchange 5.5 connector.

Now running ver6 here, and going to implement another server locally here in
next 2 months.

Yes - there are various solutions that will do POP mail. However, if you can
contact your ISP to send the mail to an SMTP server you wouldn't have to use
this at all.

Otherwise, I use EMP www.jak.com in some of the offices before they would $$
the domain model.

Sure but you would need separate username/passwords for Exchange and the POP
accounts. You could POP the mail from your ISP into Exchange and use the
full Exchange features. There are third party tools to do this or if SBS
2000 there is a article on the MS KB on how to do this.

 Dear group,

I am curious to know if it is possible
 to have an
exchange server 5.5 setup to share Calendar and Public
 Folders on a small
network while the actual email is handled via a POP account
 by an ISP. The
idea is to have the ability to use calendaring and public
 folder shares on a
network which has no true mail server. Any help would be awesome.

RE: OWA 2k questions

2002-03-26 Thread Sasha Kipervarg

David, give the administrator account admin permissions to the Exchange
storage group that the user account you would like to log onto is stored in.

Once you have done so, you can use server name/exchange/mailbox
name to log on.

Hope this helps.

Subject: OWA 2k questions

Outlook XP / Exchange rules

2002-03-26 Thread Bob Fronk

Hello group.

I have about 10 rules I run to move messages (like from this group) to different
folders.

Here is my problem: When I first open Outlook(XP) I have to open
the rules wizard and select run now to make the
rules work. Otherwise the rules dont work. Once I do that,
the rules work fine until I close Outlook.

BUT, here is the weird part: If I VPN from my home PC and open Outlook(XP)
the rules work fine, without having to use the run now.

I have deleted all rules and re-configured them but this does not fix
it.

System info:
Exchange 5.5 SP4 with all updates

Client: Windows XP Pro and Outlook 2002/XP accessing the Exchange
server. Also have a pop3 account but it is dumping into the inbox
of the exchange inbox. (NO PSTs)

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Bob

Blocking UCE relaying

2002-03-26 Thread MS-Exchange Admin Issues
Title: Blocking UCE relaying

I am familiar with blocking UCE relaying on an Exchange 5.5 system but not in this particular example.

Typically I just:

go to the routing tab of the IMS,

click on the Routing Restrictions button

check "Hosts and clients with These IP addresses"

and verify nothing is listed in the list boxes

This works great in typical exchange environments. I have a customer who has a different setup. 90% of his clients are remote and connecting using POP3 clients. No VPN, no OWA. They typically connect using a local ISP and connect this way using a variety of e-mail clients. Different IP addresses each time. In this scenario, the above doesn't work.

My guess would be that you need to check the "Hosts and clients that successfully authenticate" check box. And have the clients configure authentication credentials in their e-mail client.

Since I haven't been in situation which required this before I thought I would run it past the list first.

Any thoughts on this?

1. Just use the email of the person in the department you want to receive the resumes.
2. We could create a few distribution lists (for running multiple jobs at once) and
they can add and remove users at will.
3. They could set up rules on the current mailbox to route based on job posting number
or some other piece of information.

I don't like the idea of creating an email address every time they do a job posting.
So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had to deal with a similar situation and if you
found a workable solution.

TIA, MJ

I agree. I don't like that idea either. But now they are reaping what they
sew, and it sounds like they don't want to do THEIR jobs.

Instead of doing any forwards or CRs, just create a single mailbox. Put
everything in there, and tell them how to open it to read mail. Then they
can do it at their convenience.

Running Exchange 5.5, SP4 on NT4 SP6a.

Our HR department currently has an email address set up for job postings so
people can email their resume. They are getting so many that they no longer
want to process them. What they want to do is create a new email address for
each posting that would go to the appropriate person in the department with
the opening.

The do not wish to use the following suggestions I gave to them:

  Hello,

I sure hope someone can help me on
that... So here it is :

   I have a E2K Server. It is
installed onthe DC, since the management did not want to spend the money
on two servers at the time. Now that we have the money,I want (and
need)to"transfer" the installed mail server to a new server. I
will obviously have to change the mail server's name since I cannot have two
computers (DC and mail server) with the same name on the same
  network.

Is there a SURE way to do
  that?

RE: E2K resource mailbox

2002-03-26 Thread Keith Nelson

Tom,

I asked this question a while ago and didn't really get an answer, but here is what I
figured out.

First create the AD account and the Exchange 2k Mailbox.
Next make sure Advanced Features are turned on under the view menu in ADUC
Then create a group that you can put users in that you want to be able to access this
box.
Then go the properties of the account, Exchange Advanced, Mailbox Rights.
Scroll down to the SELF entry and make sure that Read Permissions, Full Mailbox
Access, and Associated external account are all set to allow.
Then click add and add the group you created.
Give the group Read Permissions and Full Mailbox Access.
Click OK on all the windows then disable the Account in ADUC.

By giving the SELF account Associated external account setting you now made it so the
account can be disabled but exchange will still deliver mail to the box. If you did
not do this and you tried to send e-mail to the disabled account then the mail would
be bounced back. You would also get errors in the exchange event log saying the
account does not have a master account SID.

The purpose of the group is so you don't have to keep adding and removing accounts
from the actual ACL for the Mailbox Rights.

Hope this answers your question. If you have anymore please feel free to e-mail me.

Hi all,
Is there a Q article or other how to that explains in detail how to set up a
resource mailbox in Exchange 2000? I keep running into a permissions issue - I'm
pretty sure that I don't have the user account and/or mailbox rights properly

Thanks!

  We
have users that synch Outlook and Goldmine. It even supports iCalendars
  from Outlook/Exchange.

  Am I
  thinking of another product?

At least ACT
supports Exch. Goldmine has been around forever and still has no Exch
support.

  Not so fast,
you need to know how big the site is. ACT SUCKS when you overload it.
Plus, the SQL option is very expensive

I
need a solution like exchange for one site that has scheduling, and
contacts, but no mail. I wanted to use exchange, but its to admin
dependant, this site also doesn't even have a domain. Any ideas? They
all use OL.

5.5 utility
There is a utility that will allow me to put in a
SMTP address and it will show what mailbox has that address. I cannot
find the documentation I had on that and want to know if anybody remembered
the name. I believe it is on the resource kit but did not see a name
that looked familiar.
