RE: OWA

2009-03-09 Thread Tim Evans
We have gone thru a similar decision making process here. Currently, I have
disabled access to all attachments in OWA. There is a setting in IE under
advance options "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" that leave nothing in the
local temporary files cache (assuming you are using SSL to access OWA).
Unfortunately, it is not enabled by default. I'd like to find a way to enable
it the login form, but making that change is beyond my abilities.

Subject: OWA

We're currently running a hefty E2k3 environment.

Currently, our customers only have access to their e-mail (when outside our
infrastructure) by using the existing terminal server - which can only be
accessed through the VPN. I'm proposing (through an impact assessment) that we
view the possibilities of providing access without using the following methods.

I've come up with two possibilities:

1.)OWA

2.)RPC over HTTP

For quite some time, OWA has not been authorized. It appears that there are
some valid points - and some control issues that have taken it off the table.
Since our customers have the ability to work with some sensitive documents, OWA
has always been discounted due to the possibility of a customer opening up a
sensitive document on a public computer. I'm not aware of any way to delete
all of the cache after the docs have been downloaded on said public computer.
In fact, it doesn't even have to be public, it could be the customers home
computer as well. In either case, there are valid concerns.

Apparently, our infrastructure guys (for some reason) believe pulling OWA into
the mix would create a huge task to redesign our infrastructure. So, to
accommodate them, I recommended using RPC over HTTP when using the VPN. This
way, anyone that has a travel approved laptop, still has the ability to pull
down their mail - to their system, and not be bothered with the TS. So,
essentially, connect to the VPN - get your mail, disconnect - work, reconnect
and send all your mail. A bit of a pain, but a compromise nonetheless.

While attempting the Impact Assessment, it was brought up that many other
"similar" units that have similar customers provide OWA as a service. During
the review processes of this IA, my boss asked, ok, if OWA isn't recommended
here due to security concerns - how can XXX unit get by with it?

I can't speak about the other security personnel, but I do have some concerns
about the "left over" garbage once a user is done on a computer. Is OWA still
considered a security risk? How do others ensure documents read on a public
computer are not left over for others to view?

Comments?

Thanks
Rick

Is setting OOF not supported with Outlook Anywhere or do I have something

FYI, if you migrate to the new cert, it won't be much different that using a
self signed cert for the WM5 & 6 devices. If the root cert isn't installed in
the firmware, you'll need to reinstall it after every time you wipe the device.

The upgraded cert shouldn't be a problem if the root cert is already on the
device. It sounded like you were going to install the missing root cert on all

RE: Activesync issue

2009-07-27 Thread Tim Evans
Until recently, we used an internally generated cert for all of our devices
WM5/6 devices. Part of the deployment process was to install the certs on the
device, and it had to be repeated every time the device was deployed. When we
first started using these (back when Exchange 2003 SP2 first came out with WM5
devices) many devices were locked down so much that there wasn't a way to even
install our own certs. I've never found a way to install them so that they will
survive a device wipe.

Ahh, I got ya. So the cert won't stay on the mobile device after a
wipe? That's interesting. The whole reason I was looking at doing
that, was for next year when we renew. There's no reason to pay the
$995 for an Exchange cert, so we would be downgrading back to the
standard cert, and would need that root cert on the devices...

You add the rooms in the scheduling assistant (click on Add Rooms and then
select the rooms from the list) to see their schedules and then uncheck all the
rooms that don't work leaving your desired meeting room and meeting attendees.
It's very quick and easy.

Our staff usually want to hold their meeting in a specific building so they
only view the schedules for the conference rooms located in that building. But
they can view the schedules for all conference rooms if needed.

Hi Folks,

We are running Exchange 2007 Sp1 - with Outlook 2007 clients.

Currently we have approx 20 meeting rooms and we use Public Folders as the
meeting room -
I am now looking to migrate all these to resource rooms.
When a user books a meeting in public folders - they navigate to public
folders\meeting rooms and all the meeting rooms are listed - they select a room
and can then view the monthly schedule.

Is there a way to simplify this process once I migrate to Resource Rooms?

It would appear that one of the only ways is to select the room - check the
availability and then select another one etc.

The reason for us to buy a PineApp instead of a Ironport was the price.

Any insights or preferences if you had to choose between Ironport or Proofpoint?

They both look like good products, but the salesmen always say their product is
superior. I wonder which one does better job at filtering and which provides
the best support.

When it comes down to it, I'm looking for ease of manageability and
effectiveness of filtering.

Any thoughts or insights are appreciated (even a simple +1 vote for either one
would be helpful).

RE: OT - Multiple ISA

2009-10-08 Thread Tim Evans
You can do that - just make sure that the default gateway on the mail server
points to ISA2. If the mail server needs to talk to other local subnets, you'll
need to manually add the routing to them, but it should work just fine.

My only question is why you can't use the 1st ISA Server for this. It should
be able to publish a mail server and handle browsing without any problem.

Hi,
ISA 2006 Standard edition

I have a 3-leg ISA configured (ISA1 - 192.168.0.1)
I need to install another ISA 2-leg configuration (ISA2 - 192.168.0.2).

My internal network is 192.168.0.0/24
My DMZ is 192.168.200.0/28

DMZ contains Edge and Web server.
Internal mail server is 192.168.0.10

I want all the user traffic such as Web browsing and user access from Internal
n/w to go through ISA 1 and mail server be published on ISA2.
Can I have more than 1 ISA in a network? Is it supported to have more than 1
ISA in a network?
I tried googling and couldn't find anything concrete.
Appreciate any assistance.

RE: OT - Multiple ISA

2009-10-09 Thread Tim Evans
Yes, that was my original assumption - that the users, mail server and inside
interfaces if the ISA servers would all be on the same subnet. What I was
referring to in what you highlighted below is if you have multiple subnets
behind the 1st ISA server and the mail server needs to communicate all the
local subnets, you'll have to manually add routes to the mail server for the
other local subnets.

OAB Problems

2008-06-18 Thread Tim Evans
We're in an Exchange 2003 SP2 environment. Shortly after upgrading to
Outlook 2007, some users started reporting synchronization errors
downloading the OAB. Following the instructions in KB 867506, I created
a new OAB with a different name. That didn't solve the problem. In fact,
no one can download the OAB now and everyone running in cached mode is
working with an old copy of the GAL. After a week, I created a new OAB
called "Default Offline Address Book" (the same name as it was
originally) but still now joy.

Manual attempts to download the OAB get an error: "Task 'Microsoft
Exchange' reported error (0x8004010F) : 'The operation failed. An object
cannot be found." or just "An error occurred while opening the
Microsoft Exchange offline address book files. See your administrator."

Any ideas how to fix my OAB?

Thanks

Turn up logging to Maximum and the logs will show you the
users/contacts/etc it is having issues with. Clean those issues up and
regen the OAB. You will then be fine. Just had this issue and the
customer had 112 contacts with no X.400 addresses. Once that was
resolved the OAB regened just fine and OL users could manually download
it.

RE: OAB Errors

2008-07-01 Thread Tim Evans
That would do it. There needs to be one assigned for each one. I believe you
can get by with just specifying it on one (i.e. it would eliminate the error)
but it would make your OAB incomplete.

2008-07-01 Thread Tim Evans
I don't know how big your organization is, but assuming it isn't too big, you
should be able to try fairly soon if you've forced a rebuild. Ours happened
right away (200 users, 4 exchange servers). MBS has a blog entry (or it was
discussed here recently, I forget) that describes how long it takes if you want
to wait and let outlook by itself. In that case it could be as long as 48 hours
worst case.

There is a link on barracuda central website to request removal, you

Exchange 2003 server removal

2008-09-16 Thread Tim Evans
I have been working upgrading exchange 2003 to 2007 for the last few weeks now.
My domain is at has 2003 forest & domain functional level and there are 4
exchange BE 2003 servers and a 2003 FE server. I've got the new exchange 2007
mailbox, HT and CAS role servers installed and working now, all mail is flowing
thru the 2007 HT server, mailboxes migrated & public folders replicated to the
2007 server and removed replicas from the 2003. I'm now ready to start removing
some of the 2003 servers. When I go into add/remove programs on one of the
servers, and get to the point where I'm setting the "remove" action I get:
Setup encountered an error while checking prerequisites for the component
"Microsoft Exchange": 0XC))70005 (5): Access is denied.

This happens no matter what account I use, including the admin account I use
for day to day Exchange management or even the enterprise admin account. It
happens on the FE server and on the BE that is ready for removal. These lines
are at the end of the exchange setup log:

Any ideas on how I can get these old servers removed? I'm not concerned about
the servers themselves - they are all scheduled to be retired or rebuilt. My
main concern is getting the old servers out of AD. Would I be OK if I just
followed the AD removal parts of KB833396 and ignored the rest?

Wow, I really don't know what I'm looking for here. I see this on the
organization container:
Ace[1]
Ace Type: 0x6 - ACCESS_DENIED_OBJECT_ACE_TYPE
Ace Size: 56 bytes
Ace Flags: 0x2
CONTAINER_INHERIT_ACE
Object Ace Mask: 0x0100
ACTRL_DS_CONTROL_ACCESS
Object Ace Flags: 0x1
ACE_OBJECT_TYPE_PRESENT
Object Ace Type: Send As -

Object Ace Sid: DOMAIN\Enterprise Admins
S-1-5-21-1085081214-922432649-72545543-519

I assume this means that enterprise admins are denied Send As rights at the org

would I go to change it?

Using ldp I would look at the ACL on the organization container, from the top
all the way down to the server that is failing.

I wouldn't recommend manual removal.

I need to parse the log files and present a decent looking report of anyone
logging into a mailbox who is not the owner. Specifically one username. Is
their any free software out there that will do this. I can get the eventID's
and then export it, manipulate into excel and spend awhile doing that, but this
is something they want to start doing as part of an ongoing monthly checklist.
Apparently several people are convinced that this one guy is looking in their
mailboxes. We don't manage this particular server directly and have been asked
to get this info. I have confirmed that the server is logging the information
so it's just a matter of formatting and reporting it.

Any free or REALLY cheap software that can do this. Exchange 2003 Sp2.

Thx

I've just run across this here too. All clients are Outlook 2007, Exchange 2007
SP1. I wasn't pay real close attention before it happened here, but we've also
tried OWA without any solution. In our case, I don't know if the OOF was set
when the mailbox was migrated, but this is showing up a month after the
migration.

We've also tried running Outlook with /CLEANRULES, which didn't fix it either.

last resort...disable-mailbox and connect-mailbox? Other concern would be if
this is a BES user...there was a bug prior to 4.1.4 SP5 or 6 if I recall

I spent about 2.5 years traveling North America 40+ weeks/year as a consultant
and I've seen a number of places (including Virginia) where it seemed to rain
much more than in Seattle. Maybe it's due to the fact that most of the rain in
Seattle is just drizzle a lot of the time.

Been here for 30-someithng years, and it's nice to never have to shovel snow
just to get out of your house, no tornado's or hurricanes or 110+ heat or
sub-zero temps. Sure, it rains a bit, but it never destroys my house :). Funny
thing about the Pacific Northwest is we can get 250 days with measureable rain,
but also 150 days with sunshine. For those struggling with the math it means
that yes, we have 35 days where it might rain for an hour then the sun comes
out the same day.

Not that this place is all roses either, but

Exchange 2007 Activesync issue

2009-01-20 Thread Tim Evans
OK, I'm probably missing something simple, but I'd appreciate it if someone
could point me in the right direction. I'm in the middle of a migration from
Ex03 to Ex07. I've got 3 sites. The first site has been migrated and everything
is working properly. I just installed the new Ex07 server in a different site,
and migrated the mailboxes over to it. Mail flow properly in and out of the new
server, but activesync, & owa don't work. The new server is a combination
MBX/CAS/HT server. The users I'm troubleshooting were all set up and working
fine before the migration. I've replaced the self signed cert with one from our
ca and did a get-ActiveSyncVirutalDirectory on the working CAS server with the
one that doesn't work and confirmed that the settings are all the same.

I'm finding lots of info on how to set up AS, but nothing on how to make it
work in another site.

Thanks

Yes, I can log into OWA internally by going to the server. Externally, when I
log in I get a page that says "Use the following link to open this mailbox with
optimal performance:" and gives me the URL I used to log in, along with a
button to add to favorites, but no mailbox. If it makes any difference, all the
sites are published thru ISA 2006.

Well, that was an educational 2 hours.

It turns out that when you have one CAS server proxying to another, the

Where were you yesterday when I needed this? My googling skills weren't quite
up to it. Part of the problem was that I didn't think to put in proxy. That
likely would have brought it right up

Figures since that's exactly how it works...;-) If you set an externalURL
Exchange thinks you are telling it that the server is externally available and
will try and hand out/redirect the user to that URL instead of proxying.
Here's a great article about how it all works. I had to read it a couple of
times when we were going through this...

Well, that was an educational 2 hours.

It turns out that when you have one CAS server proxying to another, the
downstream server should *not* have an external URL entered. The other change
we made was to disable forms auth and enable windows auth on the downstream
server. Once we did that, OWA and activesync just worked

Yes, it has the correct ExternalURL entered on this server.

Exchange 2007 recipient update service

2009-11-02 Thread Tim Evans
I'm preparing to apply SP2 to my Exchange organization. When I updated the
schema, I got the message "Cannot find the Recipient Update Service responsible
for domain DC=mydomain,DC=com'. New and existing users may not be properly
Exchange-enabled." during the organization prerequisite checks. I thought they
didn't have the RUS any more in Exchange 2007. Any idea what gives here? Do I
have a problem?

I still have the last 2003 Server that I haven't uninstalled yet. It's been
decommissioned and the only thing we are using it for is a SMTP relay for our
scanners. I don't see a RUS listed in our AD, so that would make sense.

Thanks.

there is no more RUS in Exchange 2007. this seems to imply that your last 2000

do you have a recipient update service in your active directory?

We've had a plethora of personal mobile devices connecting to Exchange, mostly
iPhones, and most are owned by the individual, only a few are company devices.
I tried to not allow it, but management overruled me. My concern is when a
person is terminated by either voluntary, or otherwise, means, I want to wipe
the device. I know that I need a policy in place stating that to cover the
legalities of taking such action. So if anyone has such a policy written, and

RE: Mobile Device Policy

2010-02-18 Thread Tim Evans
yeah, too much me too! :-)

Here are the T&C everyone here agrees to when they receive reimbursement for
their personal device:

By accepting reimbursement for a personal mobile communications device or
monthly cellular service from Sparling, Inc., I hereby assert and agree to the
following: I acknowledge that the phone will be used or has been used for
business purposes; I accept that by connecting to Sparling's e-mail or data
servers, data synchronized with those servers may be remotely deleted from the
mobile device at any time and without warning; I agree to accept, install or
deploy any file downloads and/or settings changes classified as "mandatory" by
Sparling IT; I agree to keep my phone secure at all times and (in the case of
smart phones) use a strong password or strong (minimum 4 digit) PIN to access
the device's data or features; I further agree to notify Sparling IT as soon as
is practical in the case of a device's loss or theft or, alternatively, agree
to disable my device remotely via the Outlook Web Application.

It doesn't specifically address termination, but I don't think it would be hard
to modify it. Our policy is that certain staff are required to have cell
phones/smart phones for their work and the company reimburses them for it.

Hope this helps

Based on my current research, iPhone security is a complete, 110%, joke.
Encryption, password, etc are apparently easily bypassed. It seems that for
places like our military, congress, etc, they only allow blackberrys and
iphones running 'good' software.

Things from as simple as rebooting your iphone when it goes into roaming and
the password is bypassed(I think is now fixed) to apple re-breaking issues
during updates, to mis-reporting devices are encrypted when they're not, to
this latest issue which is not fixed which apparently allows someone with
physical access to your encrypted iphone to get all of your data. Not way this
would fly in a real business.

Anybody have any suggestions about how to import this .CRT file? Do I just use

Sorry about my lack of DigCert knowledge. Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

2003-2007 migration with a twist

2010-06-14 Thread Tim Evans
We have an all Exchange 2007SP2 environment. We are acquiring a company with an
Exchange 2003 (unknown SP) environment. My plan is to create user accounts in
our domain for all the users and use exmerge/powershell to move their mailboxes
into our domain. My problem is that they have a bunch of public folders with
data that we need to bring over. So far, I've found that exmerge won't work on
public folders. It looks like the inter-org replication tool may do what I need.

Does anyone have any comments/suggestions on the best way to handle this? Is
there anything else I need to think about to migrate this properly? Will their
free/busy info propagate in our organization when I import their calendar data?

Thanks for any ideas.

Went through this at my former employer, only we were going from our Ex 2007
environment to their Ex 2003.
We did a pretty thorough evaluation of the Quest tools - they are VERY nice and
don't seem to miss anything. Not cheap, but money was not the primary concern
in this case.

Our problem was time-to-implementation. When a vacant suit says "do it now"
because he/she can't see another vacant suit's calendar - you don't get a lot
of time to work with scheduling professional services from Quest. Our sales
rep told me that they will not sell the product without Prof Services, and they
needed 2-3 weeks to get someone on site, so

We went with Plan B which is not as elegant and involves the users more
heavily, but still works. In the end, it probably took the same amount of
time, but a whole lot more work to do it the way we did, but we had to give the
empty suits some warm fuzzy feelings that we were getting on it "right away".

  Good times...good times.

Well, if you want it to be "perfect", you should look at the quest tool.

If you just are concerned about the data, use Outlook 2007+ and export the PFs

Is there anything bad about setting them up? Do I set them up with Time Warner?

"Bigfish" is FOPE; i.e., Forefront Online Protection for Exchange (or something

It's very much a black box. TTBOMK, you have done everything you can do.

Yeah, we've shown up clean on every online source I can find, but we're still
getting the bounced mail from bigfish.

Naturally, our largest two customers use them.

Do we know anything about how "Blocklist 2" works? Is it reported spam? DNS?
Some other criteria?

RE: eDiscovery tools for Exchange .pst files

2012-04-26 Thread Tim Evans
We are currently working with Ontrack PowerControls for Exchange. I wish it had
better search functions (support for regular expressions would be great, I
would even settle for decent and/or operators), but it does basic text searches
pretty well. I doubt that the average user would want or need these advanced
search functions. Their support is pretty decent for non technical people too.
I haven't tried opening files from a read only location - you'd have to check
with them. They have pretty good presales support.

Looking for recommendations on tools to search .pst files. Here is what I
want...

1. Can access/search .pst files (including any message attachments) located on
a read-only network share.
2. Is simple enough be be understood by people who are good lawyers but average
users.
3. Allows export of results to a new (local) .pst file or individual messages.
4. Has 'decent' support by the vendor that said lawyers can call when they have
questions or need help.

Anyone use anything that they really love or really hate?

Thanks in advance.

I suspect (but don't really know) that it's something to do with Client version

Does anyone know how AOL does this? Can it be done in Exchange 2007? Exchange
2010? (temporarily disable the ability to accept or manage calendar meetings
using mobile devices to..)

--snip..

AOL's corporate Enterprise Messaging Operations team has been monitoring a
rapidly increasing and unusually large volume of traffic across our enterprise
mail environment originating from iOS devices running the new iOS 6.1 update.
We have researched this problem and appears to be connected to a recently
identified issue that seems to cause these iOS devices to continuously loop
while synchronizing a recurring calendar meeting invitation. Similar problems
have been reported by a number of sources to several media outlets across the
Web in the past few days. While our team continues to work productively and
rapidly with Apple and Microsoft to resolve the issue, it has been necessary to
temporarily disable the ability to accept or manage calendar meetings using
mobile devices to ensure that we maintain the integrity of our corporate
enterprise messaging platform. Since this change is limited to managing
calendar invitations, by disabling them temporarily we allow our employees to
continue to experience the excellent productivity these devices bring to our
enterprise until this issue is resolved.

All,

We are preparing to deploy Exchange 2010 and will coexist with Exchange 2007.
Is it possible to generate the CSR for the certificate from an Exchange 2007
server? Our 2007 SAN cert expires before we will install 2010 and this would
prevent having to get another certificate. Also I would like to have the cert
available before the 2010 CAS install process. I know I need to add the legacy
namespace for 2007 CAS. Thanks in advance for any advice.

RE: Exchange 2010 generate CSR

Leaving the old names in place won't hurt anything. If you can't have the
revoked cert in production, I'd either just get a new cert or add the new names
to the old cert, depending on how much time it has left on it.

Thanks Tim - this may be an issue for us. Our original cert contains invalid
FQDN's, and they will no longer be issued after November 1st, 2015 (according
to http://www.networking4all.com/en/ssl+certificates/faq/change+san+issue/).

I was not sure how this would affect us so I was going to remove those entries
(Comodo SAN cert). Should I just leave the old names in place? There is a bit
of turnaround time and we can't afford a revoked cert in production.

Primary protection is provided by Postini (soon to be Google Apps). They're
really easy to configure and manage, clustering is a breeze, and for the most
part they just work. There's only been a couple of occassions in the last few
years where I've lost access to the interface requiring a power cycle of the

don't remember the exact cost but I'm pretty sure they were middle of the road.

Yes, Micheal had a falling out with one of the developers and left the project.
It is worse off for it now, too. Fortunately, another developer has come on
board and has been making a lot more improvements, plus he is easier to get
along with too. I don't mind that the project is in Perl because I don't have
to deal with the code. It's a pretty solid piece of work if you stick with the

reflector attack is quite neat though, I have to admit.

Some sites are kind of slow here. I hear it's a lot worse in the UK.

RE: DAG monitoring

I monitor for MSExchangeRepl Events 2153 & 4982

Is there anything out there that will alert me to when a database in a DAG
fails to another server? Can I monitor anything in the logs for this?

Thanks

Phil

RE: DAG monitoring

2013-03-28 Thread Tim Evans
That would probably require SCOM or a script like Peter suggested. I just set
up event log tasks on those event ID's and have it notify me. I then check the
server to see what happened.

Thanks.

But is there anything or any way to specifically monitor each database in the
DAG for when they move to a different node in the DAG? We have this happen more
often than I'd care to admit and doesn't cause any outage but it does happen
and I'd like to know when. We don't have SCCM in place nor will it be for a few
more moths and I'd like something in the interim.
