[expert] dhcp and speed
I think my cable modem is runing a little bet slower under mandrake 8.2 than under windows98. Is there any configuration file were the speed of the conection is written?, If the answer is yes, and the speed mentioned in that file is slower thant the actual, can I change those parameteres? [expert] Internet Connection Sharing
Hi crash testers this is I hope a simple problem but one that has eluded me for days I have 3 machines on my network 1: mandrake 8.0 that i have been using as a router and workstation 2: win98 (1st addition) machine 3: compaq laptop mdk8.0 recently i have done a clean install on the No1 machine and now the win 98 machine refuses to share the internet connection ,it seems as though it doesn't want to talk to the MDK. I have gone through the internet connection sharing wizard in mdk ,(this has worked flawlessly on other occasions) using etherape i can see some stuff going on between win98 workgroup so I can rule out a hardware problem. IE gets as far as detecting proxy settings and then gives me the old cannot find server page . the laptop is surfing fine ,picking up an ip address but this winblows machine jst doesn't want to play . this has me stumped i have done every thing the same as I did last install the only new thing is the lappy but surely this couldn't be stuffing things up . any suggestions would be much appreciated . regs jason Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] Evolution (Free/Busy information) problem
Hi Everyone, I have been running quite a number of tests on the Evolution that come with Mandrake 8.2, It's a very nice E-mail come groupware package.. but the one in Mandrake seems to have a bug.. that is when in the Calendar part, then using the function (Free/Busy information), no matter how one tries to use that function, all it does is sends blank summaries.. and this is a rather large problem with that Evolution.. I mean it's impossible to populate other users Calendars without this function working probably.. I have checked the mailing list archives on the Ximian site, and it has not been a reported problem.. This is a bit of hack that I had to start using about the time devfs hit, tho
the connection wasn't confirmed. I found this script when I was googling
around for a fix for the same thing. The instructions are included, and
even if you get an error during compiling, just try it anyway. I can't
recall what the error is, but it didn't effect the scripts usefulness.

Are you saying that machine 2 (windows box) has a public ip address? From your original post, I concluded that the linux box is the router. Is your linux box the gateway server, and is it running NAT for the other machines? If your linux box is the machine connected to the internet, serving as a router/gateway, then your other boxes (private machines) should be on the same subnet i.e. 192.168.0.0/24 (that would be netmask 255.255.255.0). Why can't you set up the interface device (eth0) on the windows box to have an ip in the 192.168.0.0/24 netblock range? This is what you must do for it to work with the gateway/router box... -- J. Thanks, this seems to confirm that under certain circumstances people do have problems with xfs in md8.1. Either kernel or xfs version related or ...; you know there are 100 other possibilities why this could happen happen, ahh informatics... That's why it's hard to solve. Anyway it pisses me off good. [expert] file removal or not??
Experts, I installed 8.0 and did an package up last night, the next morning when I checked the monitor, I noticed that a update had a security problem and gave the message md5sum for gpg was tampered with! possible back door on system.. words are not exact but to this effect! Now my question,if a security package which has been tampered with is loaded onto you system, do you A: uninstall the rpm and all the deps or B: re-load the whole system?? I was forced to reload the whole system because removing gpg pulls a lot of deps and in the end I could not re-load anypackages! hence for the total reload. [expert] Printing PS with LaserJet 1200 Under MDK 8.2
Hi All, I've been having some problems getting my printer (Laserjet 1200 connected via USB) working properly under Mandrake 8.2. After configuring the printer under the control center I am able to print out the sample test page just fine. Also, from the command line I can print a text file just fine. But when I try to print from any kde apps (does it send it to the printer as postscript???) or with enscript (postscript) my printer's light flash for about 5-10 minutes as if it is processing the file but finally it quits with out printing anything. Unfortunately, in this case, it was invoking supermount (3/15/02 version) which created the bad fstab entries to begin with! I don't know why that occurred. However I manually changed the contents of FSTAB. What I have now noticed, however is that the errors occur only when I click on the desktop icons for the CDs as user (the desktop icons appear to work when logged in as root). Creating new icons as user seems to make no difference. However, if I simply open konqueror and click on /mnt/cdrom, etc., after inserting a CD, konqueror correctly displays the contents of the CD. Do you know how the power-down thing works? I'd like to diagnose the problem, isolate just what tells the motherboard to cut power, but I can't find information about it anywhere. I don't THINK any processes or mounts are hanging and keeping it running. I can't find a shutdown log. The drives most certainly spin down once the Power Down message appears. It's strange because dual-booting into Win2K does the same thing (power down drives but leave mb running). I was experiencing severe X lockups (screen and keyboard). After installing the FBDev rpm, I simply changed the driver from chips to fbdev. Now I no longer have any lockups. I'm using a Toshibs Satellite Pro 420CDS, CT 6, 2MB video RAM. Because the laptop only has 40MB of RAM, I must remove the drive and install Mandrake on the drive while mounted on another machine. Hoyt Does Mandrake require a front-end tool to change drivers these days or can you just change the symlink? This last year, my daughter came home from public school (2nd grade) with her milk carton from the cafeteria at school still in hand; on the side of the milk carton was an advertisement for WindowsXP! Among other things, it said download a copy today. This guy has no shame, and people keep accepting his company's crap as if there were no other option. I've recently been consulting my co-workers saying if you really are interested in simplicity, why not buy a Mac? They are far more reliable than intel hardware and they don't crash. I've got an old G3 blue and white and it handles my scanner, smart media reader, prints to my linux print server, kids play their school software on it, etc... I never have the problems that windows gives me. I've offered to setup linux for a few people for servers and stuff, but they are still a little nervous that if something happens, they won't be able to fix it - but at least people are considering it. I'm starting to babble, but I agree, I too would like to see the Redmond ship sink. I just don't think it will, not because it's sea worthy, but because there are just too many stupid people tying their boats to it thinking it's microsoft that's holding *them* afloat. Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com a conflict in md5sums can be a problem for security, but more often it is a problem of downloading--meaning a bit flipped somewhere and got past the TCP/IP checks. If the rpm was a virus package, reloading the system is the only way to go because rpm runs as root, and your whole system (theoretically) could be infected. It is VERY difficult to write successful viruses for linux, but it is possible. So you erred on the side of caution. Nothing is wrong with that; it is better than erring on the side of risk. Usually I do the old-fashioned thing of downloading the packages, comparing the md5sums, then installing if I have a GO. My IP and domain are known and someone malicious could try to twist the ends of my TCP connections to the internet and become a man-in-the-middle. libnids, libnet and libpcap and a few cents worth of code is all it takes. So far, I have not noticed any such attacks. Most likely you could have done fine by redowning the gpg and forcing it over the bad one, but gpg is one I would never, ever take the slightest chance with, because it is the basis of secure communications. Greetings, I am having troubles getting my dimage 7 camera and compact flash card reader working. They appear to be connecting to the usb subsystem, but I can't mount them. [expert] Failing - first Boot after installation of Mdk 8.2beta2 for Power PCon Mac TiBook
I've installed Mandrake Linux PPC 8.2beta2 on my Mac TiBook. When I attempt to start up it refuses to boot the newly installed Linux. Here's what happens: 1) I startup with the chime, goes into the open-firmware multi-os program tasks whether I want to boot from the CD, MacOS, Linux, or Open-Firmware. I answer l for Linux (all the other options work fine, l is the only one that has problems) 2) It goes into the welcome to... ... boot: dialog. If I hit tab I get two options, one is linux, the other is rescue or something like that. I type linux or hit the C/R key. 3) It says hd:10/vmlinuz-2.4.18-6mdk: Unknown or corrupt filesystem Now, /dev/hda10 is the Apple_Boot partition that I configured for /boot. It's 80MB in size. I tried it with 1MB and the installation partition section died with a premature eof, presumably trying to write stuff to the /boot partition. I can do a rescue boot from the CD, and all the partitions look OK. The /boot partition has a file called vmlinuz-2.4.18-6mdk Anybody got any clues? I've fixed my problem... It appears to be only a kde thing. I was able to print from kde by enabling Ghostscript Prefiltering: Convert to PS Level 2 under the Properties-Advanced kprint menu. I'm not sure why I have to do this or what kde sends to my printer by default. If any body has a better understanding of this, I would sure be interested. I've never used this software, but this could be with how the RPM was compiled for Mandrake. What I suggest you do, is back up all the data you've created to date, uninstall the RPM, download the source from their webpage, then compile and install the software. If you run into the same problem, the problem could be the software, it could still be something with Mandrake. But that's where I'd start. Try that avenue, and let us know! Hoyt Hmmm... again; on my 315CDT with 2GB drive and 32MB ram, I first installed mdk8.1 and it took FOREVER but then I just did the 'upgrade' to 8.2 and everything went fine. Yes, I did boot from the cdrom (did you check your boot order in the bios?) and the only thing I had to configure 'post install' was the sound card. Everything so far has been great, except for some reason pcmcia services won't start at boot no matter how many times I tell it to and I could definitly use more ram and a bigger hdd. Hi, I searched in google but couldn't find any info. I'd like to buy this external CD/RW writer but need to know whether it runs under Linux. There is nothing wrong with my serices here, IMO, this is the only guy who spams me every post, he never replys so i have filed reports with his ISP, hopefully he will be bocked if he can not control his only sw to stop spam the abuse dept is me, all addresses are me. [expert] uname time
Anyone have any ideas about where the command uname -a pulls the time from i.e. what file or config setup.
