The percussion player asked me to write the chord changes on her part. OK, I thought that would be very easy to do. I opened the score, copied all chord changes from the bass part and pasted into the percussion part. How about creating an extra measure at the end of the system just to place the 3/1 expression? Change the fake rest into a real one, hide it, and create a new region for measure numbers, so the numbering would continue normally. Re: [Finale] Hours of work lost -
Yes, I just started doing incremental back-ups, but while I'm working on the score, and sometimes I spend hours without quitting Finale. That is not as good as your method, because if the file I'm working on gets corrupted but stays open, allowing me to edit it, all the saved copies from then on would be just as corrupted, even with their different names. What I'll do then is to quit Finale more often, every twenty minutes to half an hour, and do the incremental saving at the beginning of esch session, as you do. Thanks. Yes, and I am aware of that, but what I don't understand is why three backups of the corrupted file went bad all at once. As I was working on the score, I had three backups, one of them was the auto saved ".asv.mus", saved just a few minutes before. Finale became irresponsive and I had to force quit. When I tried to open the file, after restart, I got the error message. So I double clicked first the "asv.mus" backup, which gave me the same error (weird...) then I tried a "saved as" from about 10 minutes before, with no luck, and then a backup on another disk, of about 20 minutes before. It is not he question that is stupid, but this user, who's an idiot. Of course. I've seen it happen before but didn't remember how I had it fixed. I had trumpet in the voice staff, channel 1. Flute and Clarinet were both on channel 1 too. Thank you. Now, I wonder why the midi channel can't be dinamically linked to changes in instruments. At least there should be a warning message reminding you to change the midi channel or else... I mean, who would want a new instrument, a flute, for instance, sounding as trumpet? [Finale] OT Lassus font and Mac OS X
I am no longer able to get some of Lassus characters on a Macbook, which I used to get on a G3. eg. opt+shift with 1, 2 or 6 would give me flat signs on a G3, OS 9. On the Macbook (Leopard) I get regular characters, like , ¤ and þ. And when I type any of those characters (eg. opt+shift + 2)on a Word document (haven't checked other text editors) the font menu changes from Lassus to the previous selected regular font, such as Times, Verdana, etc. Any ideas? I would think this has to do with the OS. This problem has been around since I switched to OS X. Is there a newer version of Lassus, or font similar to it, that would work with Leopard? Thanks. If there is no mention of 7th in the symbol, you may use either scale in improvisation, since you can imply wathever 7th you want added to the chord, because there is no other melody going on. Em7 in Satin Doll You might have a point there. But you still can use F natural in the second Em7, as it goes to Dm7 via its secondary dominant. Also, one usually adds a 9th to the Em7 chord and a 13th to the A7, and that puts you momentarily in the D major region (IIm7-V7 of D), and thus your E dorian scale. My question: how does one know, from the chord scale theory, that the scale to use in the Em7 chord of Satin Doll is the dorian? How does the theory tell you that, except by showing you that for the moment you are in the D major territoty? My point is, if you know what tonal region you are, you can easily figure out what notes are diatonic, and don't need chord scale theory. I agree with you that there is no difference. I also do not use the chord scale theory as a basis for improvisation nor in my playing neither in my teaching, simply because I think good melodies are made of chord tones plus non-harmonic tones, and those can be either diatonic or cromatic ones. Not all notes of a melody need to be from the "chord scale". Also, there is no time in improvisation, specialy when chords change fast, to play a full scale for each chord; and picking up scale tones at random won't work either in building a good melody. >Avoiding the 7th in voicing the chord, leaving the choice of b7 or natural7 to >the improviser, how would that differ between the two chord designations? >Would someone really add a Bb or a Bnat to the A-7(b5)? This is what I think. Considering you have a Cm6 chord, you can choose either one of the 7ths in a melody. For instance if you play a descendig scalewise group of notes from D to A the Bb sounds good; and if you play a rising group from, say, C to Eb, the B natural will sound good also. As for the chord, you never use a b7 in a min6 chord, but you could add a Maj7th if the melody permits. For instance, if the melody is the root, you don't use the Maj7th, but if the melody is the 9th, the added Maj7h would soung good as in the chord C, A, Eb, G, B (rising from C) and a D in the melody. [Finale] MakeMusic lies
Below is MakeMusic's reply on my complaint about a Finale 2008 bug that makes the program quit unexpectedly upon launch. It is caused by the rearranging the main tool palete in a vertical position, and the only fix is the trashing of the preferences file. This answer is a lie, since the bug still exists in version 2009. Re: [Finale] staff name doesn't change
Thanks, Noel. That was indeed my first guess, that is, having named them by means other than the staff attributes dialog. But no, the square boxes next to the names appear only when the Staff Tool is selected. I also double clicked the word "flute" with the selection tool to make sure, and that activated the Staff Tool, presenting, as expected, the tiny square boxes next to the three staff names. However, selecting the top "flute" text by clicking on the square, selects it plus staff 2 "flute" text (as if I shift-clicked the latter), and vice-versa. If I drag one the other moves together. I opened the text block editing dialog box (thanks, I had never done so before) No occurrences of both flute and letters a or b in one text block. I found the word "flute", alone and only once, at the beginning; as for "a", "b", and "c", these were the last three. Hi, In this document, containing 3 staves, I have named staves 1 and 2 "Flute" (each). The word "Flute" appears on the score, as expected, at the staves' 1 and 2 left side. Staff 3 had no name. I opened the Staff Atributes dialog, clicked the "edit" button for "Full Name" and typed "a" for staff 1, and repeated the process for the other staves as following: "b" for staff 2 and "c" for the third staff. THe result was unexpected. Staff 3 shows "c" but staves 1 and 2 keep showing "Flute". If I open the editing fields to rename staves 1 and 2 I see "a" and "b" already there. Re: [Finale] Chord symbols
You can enter as many chords as you want on the same note. After you enter the first chord, F, choose "Manual Input" from the Chord menu. Then click on the note that is on the first beat again. Th Chord Definition dialog opens. Enter the chord you want , click OK, and the new chord will appear above the first one. Then place it wherever you want by dragging. If you want a third chord, a fourth, fifth... just repeat the process. All chords will be connected with the same whole note. However, when playing back you'll hear all chords played at once. Re: [Finale] music disappeared from page view
Thanks for answering. I did that. Doesn't help. This is what is happening: I have a single staff part written in FinMac 2003. The instrument is the double bass. I open it, in page view, whether with Finale 2003 or 2008, doesn't matter, and I see the bass staff with all the music. Still in page view, I add a new staff. The new staff does not show (still in page view). Only the original bass staff shows, as if I had not added a new staff. I switch to scroll view and I can see both staves now. The bass and the newly created one. Swith back to page view - I see only the bass staff. Back to scroll view, I delete the bass staff - now I see only the new staff in scroll view. The bass staff is gone, as expected. Back to Page view - I see a blank page! The file is here if anyone wants to check: http://hmauro.com/finale It's the only file in the directory. Try adding a new staff to it. Thank you. I opened a one-staff bass part Finale file; added staves for four more instruments, including a piano two-staff group; switched from page view to scroll view and rearranged the positioning of the staves, i.e. moved the bass part from top to bottom, etc. Then, when I switched back to page view, there was no staves, no music at all. Does the Finale Help File (FinMac, 2008) tells in what folder a default document should be saved? I know it is in the Component Files folder, but does the manual explain that? Where? Looking up "Default Document" I got the idea that it could be anywhere, since it says nothing about it. Harold ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
