Janne,

there is a Fjord farm in Montana that also raises Reindeer. Gordon and
Karla Aus, of Big Sky's Lil' Norway at Plentywood. I understand that at
Christmastime they are booked up for exhibitions and parades. She is quoted
as saying, "I love the reindeer," "They are so gentle and easy to handle."

In this article I have it states that both gender sport antlers, that the
Mongols domesticated reindeer over 2,000 years ago. mature reindeer stand
no more than 3' tall at the shoulder but that antlers can grow nearly as
large as the animal itself. (300 to 350 lbs.)

guess getting hooked by their antlers, unintentionally, is their only
drawback. they're trained similarly to the Fjord horse for pulling a sleigh.

so maybe your aspirations for a reindeer can come true? put a word in
Santa's ear...!

I'M SO SORRY to hear that Mary!

I thought I'd mention something that worked like a miracle for us on a lame
young dog. He was so bad it was looking as though he might have to be put
down, he's very ungainly large, and the vet had even gone so far as to
prescribe Rimadyl (you may have seen internet dire warnings on that one!).

You would not believe the astounding difference in the dog after we started
giving him a rounded tsp of "Joint Mobility" each day! This was over a
month ago at least and he's still looking downright pert!
Initially, we were just giving him the larch extract (Arabinogalactan)
which helped quite a bit, but this JM (which includes AG too) was just
phenomenal!

If you're interested you could look at
http://www.sourceonenaturals.com
and check on the "Joint Mobility."

I would also apply Castor Oil to the area once a day (externally).
Both of these ideas can't hurt and I believe they'll help.

Very true Marsha Jo. A friend called yesterday to recount a sorry incident
about 8 miles from here; they have a small airport beside their home which
attracts a lot of deer. They live just off the main road where hunters pass
by the dozens in a day. At dusk one turned into their driveway, shot a 4-pt
buck dead by the headlights, and fled.. killing just to be killing! It
could as easily have been a horse. We're keeping ours confined for the
duration.. ending tomorrow! Yipeee! Ruthie

I agree with you Ingrid. I think the last lap is potentially dangerous. If
a horse has any bucking inclination it is at this point that they might cut
loose. Additionally, I've noticed that horses can also pick up on a party
spirit; a sense of abandonment, (laughter, yelling) from people and from
one another.. yes, even Fjords. Watch that home-stretch for the barn!

Last winter during a bobsled run with some young people one of the girls
starting screaming (fun, I guess?) and immediately the team picked up on
that and started to work themselves up. Rules were laid down =))

Oh to be young again and fly along without caution or a care! Enviable,
but I feel that some safeguards bear repeating for beginners.

couple of ideas

2000-10-10 Thread Bushnell's
This message is from: "Bushnell's" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

In my aimless musings =)) I happened to think of how wonderful it would be
if a conformation/evaluation educational video could be made for the
overall general Fjord public. (I was reading the card that was sent out by
the NFHR Evaluation Committee for the NOV seminar and I thought about how
very few will join this opportunity in comparison to everyone else.)

Anyhow, just a thought. I guess what I'm thinking of would be an
illustrated breed standard done with real horses and people. Maybe a judge
narrating and giving tips, or, etc =))
**
Another thought I had along those same lines came from another animal
website in which they post an animal's photo each week and list subscribers
are encouraged to write in and give their appraisals of the animal's
conformation. Each participant donates their views anonymously and the
comments are then posted for everyone's comparison interest.
Probably the animal would remain anonymous too =)

Just a couple of ideas I had which I thought might reach many more Fjord
folks, make them feel included too, and promote the Fjord's benefit in
general. Something in addition to the select groupings which require
traveling and lots of money. And don't you dare think I'm criticizing
anyone that does, quite the contrary, I envy them! But with the video we
could all have a piece.

I know a great deal of effort has already gone into this kind of thing in
the past and I'm sure we're all super grateful! I am. My ideas (already
thought of before I'm sure) were along the lines of something for everyone.

Hey!*!* I just had another one, a video on shows, halter classes,
performance, etc. Has this been done? (sounds like I'm lining out my
winter's entertainment doesn't it =)

Well, back down to the grind, enough day dreaming. =)) Be kind.

Hi Listers,

we noticed at the Libby show that our Fjords were winter fuzzy already as
compared to most all others that weren't. that weekend was our first cool
weather (apologies from Montana) and because we had had such intensely hot
temperatures up until then we wondered why they were suiting up already.

well, two days ago we had snow flying through the air and last night it was
sixteen degrees here! Uffda! =)) the snow never showed on the ground (it
couldn't land! it flew straight through one way, then the other, on strong
winds =) but there's snow capped peaks now and seems two months later than
it actually is?

but the fuzzy winter-donned Fjords were ready for this! how did they know?
I'm going to keep an eye on them next fall and gauge my rose bush
winterizing accordingly.. I may have lost some.

the Fjords looked so "snuggy" in their fur coats this morning, while
munching frost-coated grass, and yes, smug too! =))

Hi y'all,

have a gal writing from near Great Falls, MT who's interested in Fjords as
cow ponies. I just looked in the roster under Montana and there's only
about 40 or more names, WITH NO ADDRESSES, and I simple don't have time to
look each and every one up for her to contact so maybe one of you could
help her out?

I hope a different system's in the works for the next roster.

AS LONG AS he can SEE the next horse ahead of him he'll be content to poke
along.. pleasure group riding doesn't do a whole lot for a horses training,
and I'd say, don't ride with other slower horses, find a friend with a fast
Fjord and Tyr may make an effort to follow when it draws ahead and out of
sight-- insecurity works wonders =) Tyr may be a herd boss as they always
bring up the rear?

You're allowing him to develop a bad habit.. keep his attention! tick the
rein ends on the saddle periodically or some such, etc.

I'm reminded of an elderly lady here who, upon regarding an unruly and wild
acting dog, said to the mistress, "do you know why he does that?" the
mistress said, "no, why?" and the scrappy old gal said, "because you let
him!" =)))

But I'm more sympathetic than I may sound, I've sure had more than my share
of sluggish non-fjords through the years and done frantic pumping maneuvers
on many a dull horse.. but it doesn't seem to matter so much now that I too
have slowed down ;))

happy trails to you and Tyr, Casey, but I probably should add that in all
likelihood, he will never change to any great extent... unless someone on
this list has discovered some magic trick to invigorate and reprogram him.
I hope so.

Hi Debby,

quite a few folk are at the Libby show with their Fjords. it was a good
turnout but spectators were down on account of the rain. too bad it was
rainy and cool but most Montanians are real happy about that, fires are out!

the Fjord folks in charge of organizing and coordinating the show did
themselves proud, they deserve a lot of credit and thanks for their
extensive efforts.. most commendable!

we enjoyed it very much, so good to see everyone again! looking forward to

YES, MICHELLE! Libby looks good, we were there last evening and you

You know, we've noticed that too, and have wondered about their "system"..
there are certain corners of the pasture that seem to be marking points

Steve,

In my personal unprofessional opinion, (not worth much) I think it's
probably too soon to tell.. it's just not a predictable scenario. Much will
depend on what happens with the weather. We are having increasingly cooler
nights, 37* right now, and that's helping.. few clouds and heavier
atmosphere yesterday.

We were in Libby last evening and it looked fine. Many of those fires (map
marks) are spot fires on the tops of high mountains (from dry lightening
last week) and present no immediate problem. Many of these may be
"unmanned" because they handle them by choppers packing big water buckets
to and fro.

I'm sure Sherry and Ron Dayton are keeping an eye on the situation, then
there's Patty Peterson right outside of Libby to keep them posted.
Maybe we'll hear from her later today, I'll see if I can locate her.

Let's all hope and pray the Libby show is on, I can confidently say it
looks like there's no problem at all at this time.

This message is from: "Bushnell's" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Mike, I very much admire your compassionate attitude for dogdom! I agree
heartily with everything you said. I can see the point you're making about
supply and demand (stop buying puppies and they'll stop manufacturing
them). Still, geneoalogical continuity of a dog breed's best bloodlines is
vital for their peak survival, just like Fjords.

The most conscientious and responsible dog breeders aren't the problem;
it's greedy puppy mills and backyard breed mixing. We have pound dogs go
begging for homes in the sticks too, I shouldn't have implied otherwise,
but the purebred disciplined ones are usually snatched right up.

Sad to say, many dog owners invest no time or training into their pet and
then pass it on, disappointed with its behavior.

I think I may have shared a story before about an abandoned labrador I
happened to see in the ditch as we traveled, I couldn't keep her, but had
her spayed, fattened her up, etc. and began advertising for a home. Then I
began BEGGING for a home for her..=) Folks would take her, I'd tell them to
return her if it didn't work out.. it didn't, back she would come. I
started to feel desperate I admit, schemingly desperate! But finally found
her a home! Yea! After this experience, Gene tried to talk me into
wearing a set of side blinders when we traveled!
ha ha. I know how hard it can be.

But I know too how much a puppy can mean to someone who has a great need;
no family members or companion, a void left by a beloved pet gone,
loneliness, age, etc. and I think those special needs require puppies. =))

Ruthie http://www.libby.org/~bushnell

I guess I'm getting to that point in life where I'm looking to indulge
myself with a selecting a dog of my choice and crafting.

I did see one obscure website where it did portray them as herding dogs and
it also made them sound very exuberant, which caused me to blink, but I
well know there are different grades of dogs, companion to high energy,
I've had both.

I believe that how they're handled as a pup and as they mature has a great
deal to do with how they turn out as adult dogs. For example, a pup that is
tussled and handled rowdily, allowed to play unabandonly with children,
might not later make a good companion for an older adult, especially a
large dog of course. Sort of like horses, teach them to walk before you
teach them to run. You have to start the pup's training with the finished
dog product in mind; if you don't want them up on people or furniture when
they're mature, start immediately with that objective, if you don't want
them to beg, never hand them treats, etc. That's one of the reasons why I
choose pups over adult dogs, you can mold them, and it also makes for a far
better bond than an adopted adult that has been mishandled and unschooled.

I guess you can tell I'm a dog nut =))) as well as a Fjord nut! =)))

There's no problem up here in the extreme northwestern corner of Montana to
date, keeping our fingers crossed, but the conditions are prime and extreme
caution is mandated.

Michelle Noonan, her family and her Fjords, in the Bitterroot Valley are of
concern. She wrote yesterday and spoke of the heavy smoke atmosphere. These
ongoing temperatures in the 90's are most unusual, record breaking I
believe, and it is one scary scenario! They're predicting DRY thunder
storms tonight and everyone is getting skittish.

I don't handle heat well, that's why I'm lurking in the house talking too
much =). Thanks for asking. However, the Fjordies don't seem to mind,
meander up and down the creek bank looking for moist green munchies
seemingly oblivious.

Come now Mike, that's a mighty big leap from a quality dog to a "puppy
mill" pumping undesirable dogs into pounds for destruction. It's been my
observation that well adjusted and disciplined purebreds can always find a
home, but I guess I should add, here in the sticks.

I doubt that I do fully grasp the "big picture" of homeless animals, too
heartbreaking to think about, but I fail to see how Jean's selection of a
puppy instead of a maladjusted adult would matter that much. If it turned
out she had to give the grown up pup away it would at least be a chicken
lover! =)))

And what guarantee does any one of us have that we will be here tomorrow to
care for our beloved pets, irregardless of our age! But there are always
other kindhearted pet-loving folk who will take in a pet to love if we just
look for them! Ask a friend before that time comes to find a good home for
your pet should anything happen.

My Mother passed away this past spring and her dearest wish was for her
"little angel" Yorkie to find a good home. Why, I almost had to hold
interviews to see who would be the lucky recipient! I'm thrilled to report
he found a wonderfully perfect home!

Don't hold back on loving puppies, GO FOR IT Jean! =)))

JEAN, THAT WAS VERY NICE of you to relate "the rest of the story" for my
benefit.. I feel bad now to have piqued your feeling of guilt with my
teasing. I don't doubt for a minute you did your very best! I guess there's
"killer" types in every breed and I agree, he had to go.. Maybe he'll end
up an only pet in a good home. I've never had a Corgi (still pining for the
Swedish Vallhund) but always thought they looked very sweet.

Some will disagree with me I suppose, but personally, I think you should go
with the puppy idea.. after all, you would have kept that adult had it been
well adjusted, and there's always someone who will take in a loving
well-behaved dog, should something prevent your caring for it.

Go for it!

On a different subject, we note that our stallion, A2Z Thorson, is a
gallant leader over his herd (I'd better get the Fjords into this
conservation) and has often displayed protective behavior on their behalf.
If a wild animal comes through he alertly runs to the front and
assesses the situation, deciding whether to cut and run! =) But I do wonder
if they have been know to defend? Last evening when Gene herded the day
crew into the barnyard (Thorson and his family) he was amazed when Thorson
suddendly whipped around and ran in the opposite direction! Gene was
astounded, this was totally unlike him, but then he sees two of his Fjord
family that had been overlooked, dragging up the rear at a distance, and
Thorson had to "usher" them in. So sweet!

Has anyone ever heard of a stallion physically warding off danger? Ruthie,

Hi Jean, so, he doesn't like chickens.. ! (tell me the "Rescue people" are
really just that, rescuers? or is that an innocuous expression for the dog

"diving for," describes it well. on our last trail ride Hohmer was overly
tempted by the extra lush foliage this year dangling right in front of his
face as we rode along. he knows I don't allow grazing but he was overcome
and "dove" for it.. I scolded him and flicked him with the end of the reins
a couple of times.. soo, he began to grab and lunge simultaneously;
anticipating the reprimand! he is so smart, how quickly they learn!

I might add he did come out of it before we finished. he's not allowed
pasture privileges, as he overdoes, so the green stuff has a real pull for
him. I don't let him nibble even before or after the ride though as that's
one of the worst habits to break!

Holly,

nice hearing about your new horse.. the name Jig is neat! I inadvertently
deleted your message without responding.. but I recall you said you were
from Libby.. small world! Yes, we are only 35 miles west of there.

you probably got into Fjords through Gayle then, she's been an inspiration
to many.

you got me started recalling my "first love".. a big bay that stood on my
big toe and wouldn't budge.. some of my horsey friends were viewing her for
the first time, somewhat askance, so I never let on. (Yeowwch!)

I spent every free minute in the pasture with her, grooming, crooning, I
optimistically re-named her "Sheba," but my Dad continued to call her "Mud
Bucket!"

h, maybe that's where my struggle in naming horses all began? ha ha

my best to you and Jigs, Ruthie

HI SUE,

We're at about 2,600 elevation so out here most everyone has a greenhouse,
except me! Maybe next year. The extent of my garden this year is carrots
planted in a bathtub so the pocket gophers can't access them. It only froze
that one morning, but as I've said before it keeps the varmits down. We
have had considerable rain.

Gosh, hate to hear the Unrau's are braking but sounds like they've done
their share and then some in the Fjord world.

It's 80+ F. today. the farrier just did 8 Fjords, gotten so he does them in

HI JOYCE! Welcome to the List. You're going to love it! As a matter of fact

WAS SNOWING! There were still a few spots of snow left on the ground from
last winter too.

We're all wondering if there'll be any first cutting hay that hasn't been

Misha, let's not talk that way =)) It's probably just that we're getting
late into the season, folks vacationing, etc. Better advertising helps
tremendously. We acquired a lot of our Fjords as foals, selected good
bloodlines, they're more moldable as youngsters and it's worked out real well.

We still have a few of our newest ones left and they're looking great!
(maybe one mare too) Our new colt out of Teal and A2Z Thorson is so special
that he's unnameable! Nothing is good enough for him. He gives new meaning
to the description of "presence." I can't bear to sell him. (is that

We had a great Saturday too Amy! Gene and I, on Dun and Hohmer, trailered a
short distance from here and we rode several miles, three hours, into the
Yaak Canyon rim where the scenery is outstanding! Huge Yellow Pines
towering above an unbelievable vista; the river far below and blue
multi-valued layers of endless mountains as far as you can see, while
seated on a carpet of wildflowers, smelling wild roses.. WOW!

There's been extra rain this Spring and the foliage is beautiful! All the
Whitetails are reddish colored now, still a few snips of snow on the
mountain tops.. I tell you it looks like Heaven should!

But, it was only 34* F this morning.

Gene says to say, on the riding distance thing, Fjords will go a lot
farther than you probably can withstand. Of course it depends on terrain
and surface. We find it's easier to measure by time here, rather than
distance. If you climb a lot it tires them much more of course, but 20
miles easy riding would be reasonable.

there you have it from northwest Montana.. Ruthie

balanced ride saddle?

I know we've been around the corral many times on the saddle subject, in
fact I just looked into the archives to see what we said, but I still have
a question, or questions, I'd like answered.

I simply cannot take my Hereford saddle well any longer! I'd like a
balanced ride (I think) as have been often told they're more comfortable.
Of course we're limited here in NW MT in what's available. We were thinking
of having one made but that's risky too. Has anyone on the list had
experience with a FRED HOOK saddle? (Gene wants to know) and does anyone
know of a balanced ride saddle in this region? (I want to know)

You can e-mail me privately if you'd rather not get the saddle subject
going again =) but I need help! It's gotten so it's downright painful
riding downhill. (it's all up or down here)

thanks for any advice, Ruthie

I suspect (don't know) imprinting is overrated. {flame suit thoroughly in

guess which of 12 foals had been imprinted and which had not (they'd all
been handled daily). Nobody could tell.
Gail-Dorine in Las Cruces

Gail, I question that study as being conclusive.. maybe the key to their
finding was the 6 month age factor, it seems to me that any of them go
through a kind of offish spell for a while early on but once they're past
that phase I believe there is a marked difference in a horse that's been
handled considerably. Of course I realize too it would depend on the
individual horse as some are more personable than others. I wonder too how
many they studied? Do you recall the resource for that theory?

Teal (Dustin's first daughter). These are all out of A2Z Thorson who is a
Gjest and Ylanda grandson. The colt is a perfect Fjord speciman and handled
daily.

A2Z Thorson fillies include two out of mares whose sire is Rokida's
Nicholas, a gray who won both classes;"Stallions over 4 years" and "Grand
Stallion" at Blue Earth last year. One mare has Rusten and Teal lineage.
One is out of Opal.

Our Fjords for sale include these 4-year old mares who have been bred back
to A2Z Thorson, but are being sold as singles. This is as good a deal as
you'll find anywhere. Two of them have been under saddle and driven.

Also, If you have an Arab friend you might mention to them that we also
have two of the finest Egyptian Arabians in the northwest for sale. They
both have outstanding movement. One out of Black Jacque, one an exceptional
trail horse that rides like a dream!

I would pick a topic I apparently can't spell! I noticed the subject title
this morning and thought, "that's looks strange!" ha ha

Shall I run it by again and use the word TALL instead of height? Does
anyone know how tall an ordinary (middle of the scale) foal is at birth?

Here's food for thought,

has anyone seen or heard of a correlation (projection?) between the heighth
of foals as it relates to their full mature heighth?

how do I say this? =)

is foal heighth a true and accurate indicator of their size as an adult?

also, what is the average heighth of a foal at birth.

I thought it would be interesting to have a few of the long time breeders
comment on this.. haven't heard from Anita in a while, I like her posts (I
like them ALL! one has to be so careful =)

Teal just had a colt out of A2Z Thorson, our stallion, (he's a dandy!) and
we've had five altogether this season; four fillies before him. Been too
busy to write even, more later.

Good Morning to you too Sue,

you'll get a lot of different opinions on this I suppose but ours is NIX
the sweet feed.

it contributes to the foal's "runs," molds easily, and is unnecessary.
when and if we use grain it is unsweetened.

ours are on timed pasture now so we don't grain.

that's just our program, I'm sure others do it differently.

Oh Teresa, that's terrible! That poor man! Our hearts ache for him this

I can't think of anyone who loves Fjords as much as Chip does or who might

Fred, it might not be a bad idea to quit the COB for now.. try it a few
weeks and see if there isn't an improvement.

contrary to what Fjords say, they can do well on hay alone for periods of
