Cantering fjords

2013-09-28 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

I'll jump in here and share that our "Hasse" also LOVES to canter. Prefers it
to trotting!!! He is much more "forward" than his mother...but a level headed
guy. He makes a great lesson horse and the kids love to ride him (in an arena)
because he likes to canter!

One day a 10 year old with little to no horse experience wanted to ride him.
Of course, we walked along side her...soon she was turning and stopping and
moving out with beginner confidence. Round and round she went ...we adults
were visiting & I was not paying total close attention when I looked her way
and she had Hasse in a most beautiful collected trot!!! Calm and steering
pretty well, Hasse was listening to her 100%. Gotta love that horse He
really likes kids.

Cross Country Trip

2013-09-26 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

Good Morning

My cousin and I traveled from MN to NM and back a few weeks ago. I drove a
super duty Ford 350 - pulling a three horse trailer. No horses this trip -
loaded the back with stuff for my property in NM.

The trip went smoothly. No glitches! Went from near 100 degree heat to
torrential rains, to gorgeous weather/views and never ending semi-trucks!!!
Truck and trailer traveled great!

First night we stayed with a fjord owner. Beautiful hobby farm - all set-up
for an RV rig. Returned again on return - many thanks to you, Julia:)))

Second night we stayed at an equestrian center outside Albuquerque, NM.
Again, great set-up for RV.

Hopefully next fall ... Taking horses and spending the winter months in NM!!!

In the meantimewaiting for a little baby boy to be born4 weeks to go

Fall colors just starting in the Grantsburg WI area :)))

My trip to NM

2013-08-07 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

Thanks for all your responses - all so helpful.

You are correct, Gail...this trip is trailer only, no horses. It's a dry run -
& the trailer filled with necessary gear for my place in New Mexico. As I
write this my NM 10 acres is being readied for habitation. I'll live in my LQ
trailer so a cement slab has been poured with easy access to custom placed
utilities/hook-ups. A small shed will hold utilities and a washer/dryer. A no
crawl fence surrounds the property. Horse shelter/cross fencing next year.

My plan was to spend this coming winter in NM - until I got the fabulous news
that my youngest daughter, Anne, is having a baby boy in late October!!!

I've changed my plans, will hang around one more year, enjoy getting to know my
grandson and be on-call if "help!!!" is needed!!! LOL

Good reason for flexibility! Haha!

My farm is still for saleprice dropped over $100,000 and that has generated
more interest. FINGERS CROSSED

My trailer won't go unused for animals, however - my nearly 200 lb English
Mastiff will love the space in the back. I had the entire back end (for
animals) insulated so the air conditioning will cool that as well. He rides in
the back of my truck when movingyep, DROOL and all!!! LOL

Again, thx for the comments...keep them coming!

Good morning Fjord Folks;

I and my cousin will be driving from MN to New Mexico - hauling a horse trailer
- leaving September 1st. My trailer has living quarters so we hope to stay
overnight at horse B&B's. Our route includes MN to Kansas City, to Witicha,
across Kansas to Ok & Tx then into New Mexico/Albeq. area.

I welcome any advice, thoughts, ideas, suggestions.

We have done this route by vehicle but not with the trailer.

Thanks!!!

Tueswill check back later in the week and tell u how I like pulling it:)

As for the truck? I love it Gas engine - getting between 15 - 18+ miles a
gallon just driving around. It is a comfortable front seat with nice lumbar
supportand the reason I chose Ford over the Chevy 1200.

I've never owned a 350 - it's a big one but I feel very safe driving it and I
love being up extra high!

Fjord head on a shoulder?

2013-06-24 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

Fjord head on your shoulder? Did you ask him to put it there? If so, your
choice. Did he choose to put it there? I personally would not allow that.

My comfort level with my personal space is VERY critical with all of my horses.
And, as I get older I find I'm even more aware of it.

I just don't like any nonsense or verging on "getting in my way". With fjords,
appys, a mini and two mini donkeys all know my rules. They adore me (I feed
them...LOL) and I spend lots of time hanging out with them in their turnouts
w/o halters. I give good scratches and smooches but I do NOT like being
clunked in the head or body by any of them!!! And, they know it!!!

Guests are also encouraged to pet my horses on the neckbut of course they
want to touch the face. Touch my fjord mares mouth? Might see teeth! LOL.
She gets no treats by mouth as she becomes pushy and snotty when there are
none. Live and learn:)))

Sven and Lena, in NW WI, are the only ones of my horses that are
sweatingand while it is horrid and hot there is a little breeze now
and then
I just offered them a COLD drink, which they enjoyed, then out to the pasture
they went, bugs and all
I offer COLD water several times a day to be sure the horses are not drinking
stale, warm water...can u imagine how un-refreshing that would be???
The sun peeks out only now and then and all the horses have several shelters
to stand under
This year I had my barn and lean-to's sprayed for flies and I can see a huge
difference. the horses eat and then head back to the barn to hang out
with only a few flies that bite their legs. Gone are the swarms of flies by
the windows and zooming in and out of the barn...worth every penny
spent!!!

RE: mane trimming

Ticks???
I've not had a problem with ticks since I started using "Freedom Spot"...a
liquid application for horses similar to what people put on dogs and cats. My
fjords would get ticks buried in their tails..breeding
beds...sores..and itchy.
Another bug product I like and it seems to help for gnats..."Belly Balm"
by Tail Tamers. A bit like SWAT but not as thick and BB has citronella to
repel bugs. Also aloe to soothe bites.
And of course..good ole' tail washing on a regular basis keeps the tails
from getting gunked up - and a good application of de-tangler on the hair
after washing.they are good to go.
Anyone out there from the southwest - desert climate?
What are the most annoying bugs for horses in the southwest???

RE: A wonderful Fjord tail

This message is from: Linda Lottie

thanks for sharing that precious story...it made ME laugh :)
A couple years ago I gave a few riding lessons to a 77 year old woman on my
sweet fjord, Lena. The woman had never ridden but wanted to so badly. I told
her, Lena would be perfect.
I took video of her trotting, with heels down (LOL) and sitting proud. She
was darn good for never having been on a horse before :) She smiled HUGE and
said with joy"I am sooo HAPPY!!"
Made my day...

Ellen..get some "Spot On" for horses and the ticks will die.the ticks
may have nests in his tail and the spot on will get those too. I put plenty
above the tail area as that is where the ticks love to nest in my fjords.
This boy is handsome..and thank you so much for taking on this rescue.
A few extra groceries and he should be good to go..to a new forever home.
:)
I always chuckle a little when I read that a fjord is a little lacking in
manners...that's just normal LOL
My fjords came in with bunches of tick bites the other day, I gave them a dose
of "spot on"..no more tick bites. The key is to dose them every two
weeksit's expensive but worth it.
Our weather in NW WI has been a real challenge the past months..really
nice day yesterday..but seems we only get ONE. Today..humid and the
darn gnats are back.
Are there gnats in New Mexico??? LOL

MN Horse Expo

2011-05-02 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

Hello Fellow Fjord Friends
The MN Horse Expo was simply..FUN!!!
The horses were fabulous - people friendly - weather crappy (good grief,
where IS spring???) .and, another successful expo under our belt.
Kristin Lee and I first attended the expo years ago with one fjord and now we
have a dozen or more. Riders, drivers - all ages.
The crowd LOVES our fjord horses!!! As a spectator myself I see first hand
that our group does a VERY nice job presenting their horses to an adoring
crowd.
The sense of community within our wonderful group of fjord owners is why we
look forward to attending the expo with joy and purpose.
Thank you to all participants. Kristin and I are incredibly proud of everyone
and appreciate the friendship and caring you bring to the program.
Oh, and did I say we had FUN? Yep, just FUN, FUN, FUN!!!

Joe.I agree with you. The current listing is from a "rescue" and as you
suggested, they may be trying to make a buck.
Again, this "rescue" is questionable. I know first hand they offered very
poor/ no foot care for a draft horse known to be in their care, claiming no
funds. Blah, blah, blah.

Kathleen..you are correct about the "broker" for these horses. I have
contacted Frog Pond Farm Horse Rescue...they specialize in drafts and the
response was the New Holland fjord situation is a broker ad, and Frog Pond
will not work with them as she does not approve of how they conduct business.
You can read about this "broker" on Frog Pond Draft Horse Rescue - google
them.

Sad for these fjords...

RE: breeding older mares

2011-02-05 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

Debby...wise words on this cold Saturday morning in WI.
My fjord mare is 15 - she is our darling and I would love to have another foal
from her. However, I will not.
My daughter owns her 8 year old son.and at my age (nearing ss), bringing a
foal into my herd seems selfish. I have plenty of horses to work with and
enjoy. There are plenty of nice foals available for purchase if I wanted a
new fjord
Still, I love this mare so much and she is such a wonderful mother.has
nice babies, with her good qualities. So, instead, I choose to find joy in
the memories of the birth of her son and really love watching my daughter love
and enjoy owning him.
If my daughter showed interest in expanding her horse numbers I might be
tempted to breed my mare.but, one horse is enough for a busy veterinarian
with a full and multi-facted life.

Debbie..great news and so glad you had so many homes to choose from..a
sellers delight.
A little story about my fjords...Lena, 15 yo mare, is stalled with my
mini. Both are a bit hefty so they make a good pair. I have one too many
equines for the number of stalls so Lena shares hers with my mini. The other
night I went out - late - to check water. Lena was standing over the mini as
he slept in the new pile of shavings. I smiled and told her she was 'such a
good girl'. All my horses love my mini and watch out for him :)
My daughter has moved our youngest fjord (now hers) closer to her home in St
Paul MN. He is Mr Popularity at the barn and she loves having him to hang out
with on her days off. Her job as a small animal vet is hectic so going out to
the barn to hang with her fjord is a great mental health activity :)
The joy of owning horses...good for the mind, body and soul.
Happy Holidays to Everyone!

RE: selling Fjords

2010-11-15 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

Amy.in the past when I looked at horses I asked if the seller could find a
nearby/local arena to present the horse. Usually works out.
Being in a small town does limit buyers..so unless a seller is willing to
do elaborate videos and/or find an arena for those out of towners who need to
see it all the first time, I guess lowering your price to fit the economy of
the small town/rural area would be an option. Or, send the horse to
consignment with one of the wonderful fjord owners who offer that service.
Just an aside...
I offer beginning riding lessons (on my dear sweet Lena (15 years old) who
takes such good care of all my riders!!!) in my area. I have had many a
parent ask me to help them find a horse for their young rider. "And, how
much do you want to spend?", I ask.
Over and over this is what I hear..oh, $200-$500. And, of course,
they want said horse safe and healthy and trained.oh, and drop dead
beautiful. LOL
Here is what I know today...if a parent (non-horsey) is looking for a
$200-$500 horse for their horse crazy kid the chances of that same parent
balking at vet care, farrier costs, correct fitting gear and a safe riding
area/arena/fencing, is a certainty. Not to mentiongood hay.
I learned, quickly, to resist helping a parent find a horse for that cost.
There may be a diamond in the ruff out there.but I'm not interested in
taking my time to find it.
Part of the conflict is the mind-set in our rural area where the average
person thinks any ole' horse is good enough to jump on and go for a ride.
Buying a fjord for $5, 6, 7000? NO WAY!!!
Sigh.
Melting going on here in NW WI. My sun conure parrot sits on his daytime
perch near two big windows. This morning he started screeching with a
major purpose so I went to look. Sure enough...a HUGE red-tailed hawk was
flying around the yard. Same parrot also "warns" me when the eagles are out
and about. They just know danger. :)

Oh gosh, Amy..and I would not want to sell a horse to someone who does not
get it that the cost of the horse is the least of the expense.
To ask someone to sell a $6500 horse (and well worth it from your description)
for $1000 is insulting and, dare I say, stupid???
Tells me the buyer is in a dream world.LOL
Linda in WI where my fjords are out in the pasture all day eating dried up
2010 grass. They LOVE IT.LOL Don't want to come in at night.haha

RE: Fjords and Trees

2010-08-24 Thread Linda Lottie

Karen and others..
Are you sure you don't have beavers instead of fjords..LOL

Only one place I lived with my fjords did they munch on the trees..and the
trees were River Birch. It was a dry lot.
My goats chewed the dickens out of some scap trees in Minnesota - same paddock
as the fjords but the fjords left them alone.
Here in Wisconsin two of my pastures have lots of trees. I am happy to say
the horses leave them alone. There is plenty of grass to eat so that is most
likely the reason, but, even in winter with knee deep snow the trees don't
seem to appeal to them.
Guess I am fortunate
On occassion they will chew on a fence board...
Finally cooler in NW WI...whew, it's been a hot and humid summer.

Thanks.I don't have a work collar but will see how a breast collar and

the mower is on the back of the tractor. I can take it off but it is a hassle
... soon as the weather warms and summer moves on I won't have to mow so
much.
Nevertheless, I think it would be cool to use the fjords.

2010 Minnesota Horse Expo

2010-03-28 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

Good Morning, Fjord Fans!!
The Minnesota Horse Expo will soon be here. If anyone wants to advertise a
horse for sale, a farm, or a stallion please send to the address below by
{{{ April 15th }}} !!!
We suggest you offer a photo/photos and attach your business card to the sale
flyer...normal size paper, rather than just sending loose business cards.
The isle can be windy.
Our new location is on a VERY busy isle. Loose business cards are difficult

or looked at.

RE: salt lick, more pee?

2009-11-19 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

Laurie...my guess is he is consuming large amounts of salt. Be very
careful. A horse at a barn I boarded at years ago was eating WAY TO MUCH
salt. His teenage owner just kept giving him salt and more saltnot
realizing what was happening or the danger. I noticed his stall was just
drenched, day after day...each horse had an auto waterere.
Finally, the horse was loosing weight ..mind you, I did not know at this
point he was consuming so much salt.  ;
The owner of the barn became involved, called the parents of the teen, and,
literally saved this horse. Had it continued he could of died.
So, keep an eye on him.

RE: unmannerly fjords

Lisa...she is a "mare" LOL
I've owned 4 mares..all but the Gotland were sweethearts who showed no
heat sign or snottiness. But, Miss Salika has an attitude and just has to
fuss about every little thing :)
Yet, I like her. She is spunky and I love when she does settle in and allows
herself to enjoy some time together. She is 23, lame in her shoulder, so a
pasture pony.
I've know mares of other breeds that had major attitude issues..
Who knows why...

unmannerly fjords

2009-11-15 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

Lisa and all;
Just have to pop in here and comment on the unmannerly fjords written about
today.
I become a tad snarly when I hear of owners of fjords with feet that
desperately need trimming and the manners of a wild pig!!!
Tells me no one, nobody, nada has done one thing with them - just let them
hang out in a pasture. Maybe the horses don't care. Just seems such a waste
of a wonderful animal. Bless those of you who take them and teach them to be
like the wonderful horses we all know.
I have a Swedish Gotland rescue. She had been neglectednot physically
abused - simply neglected. No contact, not enough food, and no attention to
health, feet or grooming. When she arrived she was fearful and naughty!!!
After 20+ years of owning horses her behavior posed a challenge. I personally
like working with a horse like this - just enjoy watching their mind and body
discover a new way. However, she has to this day - three years later - never
really come to enjoy human contact. I know her breed is much like
fjords.just smaller. They can be little pests, pocket sniffers, love
attention and are easy to work with. At age 23 my Swedish simply prefers to
hang out by herself or at a distance to the other horses. Once I get her in
the barn she settles in and behaves but she sure does not 'crave' handling.
Ingrained to be weary and not trusting??? I like her but she is not one I let
kids and non-horsey adults be around. She has too many quirks and doesn't
seem to enjoy their company. Poor girl.
I remember the first day I owned my very first fjord. He tested me big
timeI remember thinking, "What the heck did I buy here??" LOL Many
of you know who my first fjord is.."FAIR ACRES SVEN"!!! He is a total
sweetheart, honey-boy, darling, but, even HE decided to push the limits and
use that big ole' head of his to check and see if I KNEW about "the
fjord-to-grass dive" that nearly dislocates one's shoulder.. LOL
This economy does not bode well for the unmannerly, poorly maintained horse.
At the vet yesterday the gal at the desk asked me.."do you want any more
horses?", and she was dead serious.
Another beautiful day in NW WI..sunny, low winds, upper 40's...and
November marches on. No snow and none in the forecast. Me = happy camper
:)
Linda with three mannerly fjords...until we unload at the MN Horse Expo :)

future of fjords/selling fjords

2009-10-28 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

Good Afternoon, List
Have enjoyed the discussion of fjord types.
I own three fjords. All three are mid to heavy draft. The youngest, gelding,
age 7 has been trained to ride and drive. He is my daughter's favorite to
ride..so, he has more experience under saddle than pulling a cart.
This gelding is nearly 14.2 and a BIG boy with a huge head. There is nothing
"fine boned" about him. However, my daughter thinks he is the BOMB!!! Why?
He LOVES to canter.
My daughter has NO INTEREST in driving. NONE, nada... She (and her age
mates) are the future for fjord shows - and, future fjord
owners/breeders/promoters.
Young people prefer to ride and love to ride fjords. Frankly, I like to ride
and will until I can no longer get my butt in the saddle. I also enjoy
driving..and purposefully learned to drive knowing one day I would not
ride.
Young people (and more "mature" as well) want fjords that
RIDE...WELL...all three gaits. They want to show their fjords and
want them to be mannerly, collected.
If you want to sell your fjord/fjords...have them trained to move
well/collected at the walk, trot and canterriding and driving.
Most folks do not have the skill, time or desire to work with a fjord to bring
it to a place where it can be shown or safely ridden at all three gaits.
I LOVE driving my fjord - but, we ride more. We have a choice..and for
now, riding wins!!!
Fine boned, mid-draft, drafty...matters not. A well trained, collected,
horse at all three gaits is a joy to own and to ride.
Confirmation and temperament paired with a knowledgeable trainer, IMO, will
tell you what you need to know to fully enjoy your fjord or market your horse
to the right buyer..and the right discipline.
If you are a trainer...you are half-way there and can save a bunch of
money :)
JMHO on a dreary damp fall day in NW Wisconsin.

Minnesota Horse Expo 2010

2009-10-19 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

Good Morning, Fjord Lovers :)
The MN Horse Expo 2010 will be held the end of April 2010, in St Paul MN. Our
MN group has a great new location with LOTS of traffic.
We also have a generous display area.
If you want to send me "for sale", "farm", "at stud", training, or
merchandise for sale information to put on display, please get your PHOTOS
taken while the weather is still nice and the wooly coats are not 4" deep -
LOL
DO NOT send me anything until 2010..I'll let you know when to
send...this is just a "heads up" to anyone who would like to have
information at the expo.
I suggest you make 40-50 copies of whatever you want to
presentbusiness card STAPLED to the information...we will put out
a few each day for 4 days. Loose business cards end up in a pile or on the
floor. If you have a brochure, best to send a plastic stand holder to
display. If you have a horse for sale..PLEASE, show photos and describe
the horse in detail.
Make it EASY for prospective buyers and folks interested to contact you with
well done flyers and exciting, inviting information.
We have wall space to hang photos (8X10) - be sure to add written information
to the photo to identify back to flyers or brochures.
We are happy to have information for display as we always have folks looking
for a fjord, wanting information on fjords.
Remember, you must make and send information ... we simply put it out on
display. Thank you..
Questions? Send to me @ horselo...@hotmail.com

To Amy.....older horses

2009-09-18 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

Amythank you for this:

"Please try to stop and put yourself in Carol's shoes for a minute...
(hypothetical situation) Winter is coming on and you have a 30+ beloved horse
that is obviously declining (i.e. not getting around as well, maybe droppping
weight, having a hard time getting up and down, etc.). Isn't it better to let
them go now while you can get a vet out to them and get them decently burried?
Or would you rather wait till mid winter when they may go down and not be able
to get up, or get seriously sick, and the vet can't get out to your place
because of the weather, and then, after having to suffer for who knows how
long and finally dying you have no way to bury or otherwise dispose of the
remains?"

I am facing this decision today with my beloved quarterhorse...our first
horse, having owned him since age 9...he is now, 27. With buldging
arthritic knees, a severe heart murmur, and, teeth needing major attention
beyond just floating I think about him every day. Our plans are to donate him
to the University Veterinary College. It's just so hard to make that
call...

Your words have given me strength of reason for today.

RE: More heat wave

2009-07-30 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

A question?

Years ago I was told that after hosing down a horse that is over heated or to
just cool them off it is important to use a sweat scrapper to get the excess
water off the body because it will heat up and actually do the opposite of
cooling them down

Has anyone else heard of this?

Does a "mister" douse the body with water of just get it gently wet?

Not being from the south I know nothing about "misters".

Maybe the info I got was just "hooey" :)

RE: Foundered Fjord

2009-07-30 Thread Linda Lottie
This message is from: Linda Lottie

Such a sad story, Corrine..another reason I rarely refer to fjords as
"easy keepers".

I have my three fjords out on the pasture with their grazing muzzles on all
day and they still have plenty of "fluff" in their mid sections and even a bit
of a crest :( I have not been able to ride or drive since early June which
does not help.

The quarter horse and appy are on pasture 24/7 and maintain their weight
perfectly.THAT is what I call "easy keepers".

Yes, I hope this fellow gets a forever home with an owner that will do what is
necessary to keep him healthy.

cooler temps and much needed rain has the grass green at last.

> Monday morning came and I was pretty nervous. Anyway, the Vet that showed
up was her husband. (The other partner in the clinic.) He usually only does
small animals, but there he was! No handler. No stud chain. I instantly
relaxed. I told him what I had been doing with my horse to make things easier
and safer for everyone and said, "I beg you to work with me on this". His
response was positive and I gave him a crash course in clicker training and in
advance and retreat methods.Everything went swimmingly. My Vet seemed to
have a easy time with it, my horse let out a big sigh and was wonderful, and
I was on cloud nine. We worked on a loose lead, in an open paddock, and
allowed the horse to move when he needed to. Both horses were standing calmly
and quietly when they got their shots, and the Vet was done and gone in about
20 minutes. I was on top of the world the rest of the day. When my Vet was
leaving I was thanking him (for the umteenth time!

the positive experience for next year. Thanks to everyone who posted
privately and on the list with encouragement and help.

Lisa..that would be me re the Gotland. I have an aged mare that was
neglected for years/rescued and rehomed to me.She is fat, sassy and
happy...not used much, turned out with the others that are retired. We
love her. Very sweet tempermant, willing, and great size. Not as much
"horse" as a fjord, finer boned.

IMO, the Gotland does not have the "presence" of a fjord. Hard to beat that.
