Re: [Flexradio] Using FlexControl with 2 PowerSDR Instances

2013-06-20 Thread Joel Harrison
I have not received any responses to my post, so I can assume this is not
possible or no one has tried to do this before?

If it is not possible, does anyone know if you can run two FlexControl
knobs on one computer, one controlling PSDR instance one and the other PSDR
instance 2??

Any comments or assistance relating this topic would be appreciated.

[Flexradio] Using FlexControl with 2 PowerSDR Instances

2013-06-15 Thread Joel Harrison
I am running two instances of PowerSDR on one computer, one instance with a
Flex 1500 and the second with a Flex 5000. All is well and working fine, no
issues but is there a way to use the FlexControl knob with both?? It works
fine on the first instances loaded up (the 1500 in this case) but not the
second and I would love to be able to have it switch over to the second
instance (5000) when it is in focus.

Is that possible or just a dream?? Thanks for any advice.

Re: [Flexradio] NR/ANF in PSDR 2.0.22

2011-03-30 Thread Joel Harrison

Ted,

Excellent point!

The same "noise" will even act differently on different bands, requiring a
different approach (settings) in which to minimize the effect.

One very good example here at W5ZN is the difference in how I must handle
the same line noise source to the NE on 160 meters as opposed to 50 MHz!

I too have been experimenting with NR.

I have decided that there is no silver bullet for NR or NB for that matter.

We all have different noise floors and noise content and each day can be
different. In my location when a nearby well water pump starts running, the
noise floor jumps1 or 2 db and I see spikes that were not present before.
Switching to another band it may less or even worse. I also see differences
as band propagation conditions changes.

I just do not see how single software settings can handle it all. So I tweak
the Taps, but mostly I adjust the Delay numbers (down to as low as 15 works
great for me) and keep notes on which numbers worked best at that time.

Don,

Thanks. This is an area where I am a Novice at best!!! I realize this is a
personal preference thing and some of the skins look nice to me and some
just look downright repulsive to me, but are loved by others! :-))

I like the default skin with the exception of what the button colors does
when it is selection (all of the buttons). On the default skin, the selected
button is indication by a blue line under the button text. On other skins
the entire background changes from its default color (black in this case) to
a different color when it is selected or in its "active" state. I would just
simply like the background button color on the default skin to change from
"black" to the blue color of the "underline" it changes to now when it is
selected and active.

I have fiddled with the "Appearance" settings but can't find anything to
change this and I don't know where the skin files are stored to attempt to
abuse them myself, or if that is even possible.

Again, I realize this is somewhat petty and just a personal preference but I
frankly don't have a clue how to find the skin file and try to do something
with it, or if it is even something I would have a clue what I'm doing with.

Thanks again for any help.

If someone does a "mod" for this skin let me know. My preference is the

"How do you change the button color?"

You can't using the option you mentioned below for controls on the console
unless you change the graphic files associated with that control (there are
two; the on state & off state) for that skin.

Setup/Appearance only controls dialog boxes that are not "skinned".

Upon doing a search for answer before dropping a question here, see that
there had a long running discussion on skins and buttons, so I hope this
does not stir the pot and cause a boil over

How do you change the button color? I see via Setup/Appearance there seems
to be a facility to change the color. When I try nothing happens...even if I
use a different skin.

All I want to do is change the little blue line or button marker to fully
illuminate the button on the Default skin.

During my search there was comment where some one said it is easy to do ,
but never stated how.

Re: [Flexradio] S-meter Calibration Question

2011-03-27 Thread Joel Harrison

Tony,

I conduct a lot of low band receiving antenna tests here for noise floor and
signal strength comparison, as well as other antenna comparisons.

The calibrated dBm scale with PowerSDR along with the "peak" feature and my
5000 is an extremely valuable tool in recording accurate results.

I would strongly encourage anyone wishing to conduct antenna comparisons to
utilize this feature. There are, of course, many variables in performing
antenna comparisons but this feature without question removes the ones
related to "measurement equipment"!

Thanks for the additional info on the Flex S-meter Gerald. Yes, I'm glad
the pre-amp doesn't add to the level on the panadapter. As for the
calibrated S-meter, it's wonderful to give reports or check the f/b of
ones antenna knowing that the measurement is accurate.

Can't begin to tell you how useful the panadapter / waterfall is for
chasing DX. I worked the VU4 very quickly by pointing and clicking on
the last stations calling. It's like shooting fish in a barrel ; )

If you haven't done so, make sure you enter your wants and wishes into the
Enhancements database so that when FlexRadio starts to address the
improvement of the ATUs operational behavior, that these can be factored in
as possible requirements.

An even better possibility that Flex might consider is to remember ATU
settings by frequency, not just band. My SGC and LDG tuners do this and
remember the tuning parameters for the last few hundred frequencies tuned,
regardless of band. When I transmit on (or near) one of these, the tuner
automatically sets the tuning values. An option for Flex would be to also do
this on receive, but it should be possible to disable the option.

Greetings Gwyn,

What buffer size do you use when you go to 48 KHz?? I do the exact same
thing as you do for CW with 48 KHz sampling rate but have to change my
buffer size (the setting just above the sample rate setting) to about either
512 or 1024 and that solves it here.

Hope this helps.

With .19 RC1 all I see is a carrier signal in the middle of RX2 on the wrong

Re: [Flexradio] strange behavior

2011-03-09 Thread Joel Harrison

Hi Mike,

I am experiencing the same. I was advised it is a 2.0.19 bug that has been
previously reported and Flex is aware of it. I also know they are
"feverishly" working to resolve it.

At the moment exiting PSDR and turning off the 5000 is the only way I am
aware of to recover from the condition.

That's all I know about it!! Fortunately mine has not been occurring too
often, but it does occur.

Subject: [Flexradio] strange behavior

I recently upgraded to the latest PSDR ver. with my Flex 5000A. Previous
to that, I was having no problems. Now, sometimes the radio stops
responding to frequency changes. It just won't change freq. The radio
frequency indication changes OK, but the audio remains fixed on the station
last heard. For instance this morning I was listening to a station on
14.250 MHz. I tried changing frequency with the mouse and the frequency
readout on the radio screen changed, but I was still listening to the same
station on 14.250. I tried changing bands and it remained on the signal on
14.250. Stopping an restarting PSDR does not change the situation. I can
turn off PSDR and the power to the Flex 5000 and the situation corrects
itself, but often it returns after a few minutes.

I am running ver 2.0.19 PSDR with a Windows XP machine, 2GB ram dual core
with all updates. As I said this anomaly never happened until the most
recent upgrade. Any ideas??

Thanks,

Please note one correction since I want to remain factual. The FCC rule

97.307(c) and (d). NOT 97.303.

97.303 involved another matter from a couple years ago.

This is a great story of a guy who took a constructive approach towards
resolving a blocking problem with a major investment and stuck to it for
quite a while without becoming cynical or bitter. I am sure Flex would have
liked the story to be different but you cannot argue the effectiveness of
W5ZN's efforts. Thankfully this is a big one behind us.

[Flexradio] The Flex 5000 Transmit Spur - Final Chapter

2011-03-08 Thread Joel Harrison
Greetings to all,

Since I have been at the center of this matter from the very beginning and I
have been mentioned in numerous emails concerning this topic I believe it is
important, now that I consider this matter RESOLVED on 160 and 80 meters,
that my comments be noted. If your amateur radio interests don't involve
operating CW, then this entire topic is not applicable to you aside from
possibly obtaining a better understanding of the rules concerning spurious
emissions.

Before I begin it is important for everyone to understand I have no ax to
grind or posses any ill will toward anyone. I'm just stating the facts, pure
and simple, and I have test data and copies of email exchanges to back up my
facts. Most are just a restatement of previously facts here. It is also very
important to note that I am and have been very supportive of Flex products
in many public forums including a presentation at the Dayton SDR Forum in
2009 in which I spoke quite highly of the 5000 and also at Gerald's request
at the Flex dinner in 2007 concerning the 5000's receiver performance in
heavy contest environments in close proximity to many high power stations.
The Flex 5000 receiver was used exclusively to acquire the detailed receive
signal test data in the March/April 2010 QEX article by myself and N4HY. I
am not a Flex-hater, Flex-whiner or basher here, on other internet media or
public forum. I simply desire and, frankly, demand the best product from a
company that shares that desire.

This matter really came to the surface in the fall of 2008 when I was nailed
on the 160 meter Low Band Chat for having a transmit spur, VERY audible at
distances as much as 1000 miles and more away, that was below my transmit
fundamental on 160 meters one morning while calling a DX station operating
split. The DX station just happened to be listening up 2-3 KHz. I was up
about 2.4 KHz calling so the "spur" was right on his xmit frequency. A few
subsequent on-the-air tests were conducted with a few competent,
knowledgeable hams who were RF/Electrical engineers and they confirmed it
was present.

When I first contacted Flex about the problem the immediate response was
that I had a problem with my amplifier. This did not set well with me simply
because I knew that was wrong. I could see the spur myself on RX2 while
transmitting with the amplifier turned off. The "spur" varied over time
anywhere from 57 dB at best to 53 dB at worst below the fundamental.
Follow-up emails from some on this reflector, when bringing the matter here
seeking input/advice, suggested I was running excessive or illegal power and
therefore that was the cause of the problem. For the record I take pride in
operating my station strictly in accordance with the FCC rules. Whenever a
condition has been brought to my attention I have never been offended or
antagonistic when confronted with a problem originating from W5ZN. Just ask
the 160 meter DX guys. When they confronted me about this problem I didn't
argue, I sought input as to exactly what they were seeing/hearing so I could
correct it. This problem, however, could not be corrected by me.

The problem did not exist just on 160 meters. It was a problem inherent on
all bands however the low bands (160/80 meters) exhibited the worst
condition.

Gerald was out for a few days when this first came to light but when he
returned took the matter seriously and began working to address it. First
thoughts were this may be a firmware issue although it turned out to be a
hardware problem. There were early attempts at a software "fix" and a beta
routine was developed, which I tested. It work but was a rather detailed
manual procedure and only worked on one band at a time. If you were on 160
meters, ran the routine and a few minutes later moved to 80 meters the
routine had to be run again. If you then went back to 160 the routine was
again required. Attempts at automating this process proved complicated. This
really begged the question "Is it moral to fix a hardware problem with
software?"

This matter drug on and on for over 18 months with no real effort by Flex to
address it until Steve Hicks, N5AC, contacted me in late spring last year
and advised he was working on the matter. Steve and I went through several
email exchanges, what was and was not acceptable, what realistically could
be achieved and what options were available. Following several lab and alpha
tests by Flex under Steve's supervision that he shared and discussed with
me, it was finally concluded that a hardware fix was the most solid path
forward. The result is the hardware mod and ECN that is now available. The
spur originating from my Flex 5000 transmitter is now, as a minimum, 78 dB
below the fundamental and on-the-air tests with the same individuals I
conducted the original tests with have confirmed it has been sufficiently
reduced.

There are a number of "lessons learned" from this trial, or maybe some
already known but not applied.

[Flexradio] Using the Flex 5000 in ARRL 160 Meter Contest

2009-11-30 Thread Joel Harrison

This will only be of interest to those who want to participate in the
upcoming ARRL 160 Meter Contest using the great capabilities of the Flex
5000 receiver but avoiding the awful CW transmit spur that exists with the
Flex 5000 transmitter 2.4 KHz below the fundamental, which will create a
disaster in a contest environment.

I've been searching for a way to utilize a separate transmitter, in my case
my Yaesu FT-1000MkV, while using the 5000 receiver and controlling the
frequency tuning from the 5000.

Thanks to the great DDUtil program from Steve Nance, K5FR, this can be
accomplished quite easily via CAT command. I have been successful in doing
this today, thanks to some finite adjustments from Steve.

So, if you are in the same boat as I am and need to use a separate radio for
xmit this weekend due to the spur, drop me an email and I'll give you the
details.

I'm very happy to hear Flex is addressing this! FYI, I was the one
who first noticed and reported W5ZN's spur (and I'm not local but ~600 miles
away). As I recall it was about S5-6 on a calibrated S-meter (-91 to -97
dBm). It was so strong I thought it was Joel's fundamental. A signal this
strong would cover many DX signals on 160. Please remember that transmitted
spurs don't adversely affect the 2 or 3 customers doing the transmitting
(since they actually can't hear it while transmitting), but potentially
hundreds of others who may be trying to receive weak signals in the presence
of the spur. Yaesu is still suffering the effects of stone-walling
complaints about key clicks for nearly 15 years before they did anything to
address the problem. I'm very happy to know Flex is not making that

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 5000 Transmit Spur

2009-10-20 Thread Joel Harrison

Hi Dave,

The spur on my 5000 is not as low as the one in the review 5000. Mine is
about 58 dB down.

Yes, I am referring to CW.

While I have the floor (again) let me just mention to everyone that the
initial thread on the Top Band reflector that started this discussion
actually began by noting some great features of the 5000 receiver & PowerSDR
software that provide the capability to conduct accurate noise floor and
signal comparisons very nicely thanks to the calibrated dBm scale of the
Panadapter and the peak feature. For those of you that caught my
presentation at the SDR Forum at Dayton this year you will recall this as
one of the many great features I noted about the 5000. In addition, if you
have read the W5ZN & N4HY paper on the 8 Circle Vertical Array for Low Band
Receiving (www.w5zn.org) all of the noise floor and signal comparison tables
and data were compiled using the 5000 receiver & PowerSDR. That capability
is a must for anyone evaluating the noise at their QTH or for antenna
comparison. Forget an S meter on a conventional radio! So, you actually get
a nice piece of "test equipment" by virtue of this "built-in" feature.

Just wanted to make sure it is clear that I am NOT anti-Flex and there are a
number of great features of the 5000 that I have publicly presented via
other forums that some of you may not be aware of. So please don't take this
one issue (that I know Gerald & Company want to resolve) out of context!

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 5000 Transmit Spur

2009-10-20 Thread Joel Harrison

Greetings Ian and all,

Yes that was my post and YES, the spur DOES exist with the 5000. I cannot
speak to the 3000 as I have no experience with it.

Allow me to tell you my actual, documented on the air experience with this
issue. First, if you look at the ARRL product review you can see the spur on
the spectral display about 2.4 KHz below the fundamental. It is way down
from the fundamental and during normal, rag chew "how great is my audio" 100
watt operation it will most likely never be noticed.

Now, enter an arena on 160 meters working DX where you will run an
amplifier, sometimes a gain antenna and most likely be using low noise
receive antennas (I run 1.5 KW and Beverages & vertical array rx antennas as
most DX'ers do on 160). Early one morning, a DX station was listening up 2-3
KHz. I was up about 2.5 KHz calling and was slammed on the air and on the
160 meter chat reflector for calling right on the DX stations frequency. Of
course, this wasn't the case however I investigated and discovered that the
spur does in fact exist and under many conditions WILL be heard by other
stations. This is a hardware related spur with the 5000 and not with the
PowerSDR software.

W5UN (who was aware of it as well), W5LUA and I ran tests to try to resolve
the issue but were unsuccessful. The spur was clearly present and could be
heard in all tests. Flex was notified but frankly, with all due respect to
the folks at Flex, it took a bit of explaining and help from N4HY to make
them understand why this was an issue. The 160 meter contest was coming up
and I dearly wanted to use the 5000, however attempting to use it with the
spur issue would have been suicide for W5ZN. My buddy Bob McGwier, N4HY,
jumped in and wrote a manual software routine that generated another spur in
software that you adjusted to the same amplitude as the offending hardware
spur, then you moved the software spur onto the hardware spur and adjusted
the phase of the software spur to greatly reduce the hardware spur. This
procedure works, HOWEVER, this procedure is ONLY good for one band at a time
and if you change bands you have to run the manual procedure again.

A few weeks ago I was on 30 meters calling a DX station...same situation, up
about 2.5 KHz and I got slammed again. I had not run the manual spur
reduction procedure because it is cumbersome, I change bands a lot, so I got
nailed.

Those are the facts. Flex has known about this for about one year now and
nothing has been done to address it other than Bob's software procedure
(which I greatly appreciated him doing!). In fairness to Flex this probably
only effects less than 5% of their customers so there is no real urgency on
their part to address this. If you're going to enter the DX and contest
arena, though, please beware and the reason for my TopBand reflector post.
In time, you will get nailed to the wall with a nail gun because of it!

Sadly, as a result of this, I no longer use my 5000 on HF. The receiver is
great and performs very well, however the xmit problem is something I cannot
accept at W5ZN in my DX and contest operation.

I mean no offense by this email whatsoever to Flex or anyone, these are
simply the facts of my on-the-air experience and any effort to permanently
resolve this will be most welcome. I would like to use my 5000 on HF again.

Pete - one other thing I need to mention if you haven't noticed
alreadyThe noise floor will be different with each of the three sampling
rates (48, 96, 192). This doesn't change the signal to noise ratio will
change the display. The lower the sampling rate the lower the noise floor.

Also, be aware that the Flex 5000 has a transmit spur approximately 2.4 KHz
down from the fundamental freq. If you are calling a station up 2 KHz or so
and are running an amplifier you will most definitely put out a signal,
thanks to the spur, that people can hear. Flex is very aware of this but
they have NOT, repeat NOT fixed this. One of their software gurus did write
a MANUAL software routine in PowerSDR to address this hardware issue and it
does reduce the spur significantly but the procedure is a manua

Now that the 6m E-season is starting, I've had a load of fun with the
3000 on the Magic Band.
It is really great to see the activity pop up on the panadaptor, and
also see (and avoid) the birdies and general crud that is the bane of
operating 6m in an urban area.

I was worried that I may not have enough sensitivity, based on comments
received from those running the F5000, but I really don't have an issue
with that.
Going from a good 50ohm termination to the actual antenna, a 6M7JHV at
60ft, I see between 10 and 15dB increase in noise level depending on
direction. Adding an external preamp would not give any benefit in my
case, although for someone in a much quieter location that may be desirable.

I do have a precision noise head, and measured the noise figure at
7.6dB, using the Y-factor method. That is pretty good, compared to many
other rigs, and is certainly good enough for my location. All
measurements are with the internal preamp ON.

The receiver is essentially bomb-proof. I have a number of well equipped
stations very close to me that used to completely flatten my 706, but
with the 3000 I don't even know they are on, except for the huge peaks
on the panadaptor!

I have worked a few stations on 6 running the F5000, but so far noone
using a F3000. I know they are out there; load up a piece of wire and
get on. For the next couple of months the band is going to be hopping!

Absolutely!!

I do so with multiple low band rx antennas, a separate antenna for xmit and
also have VAC running for Skimmer or MixW as well as control from my
logging program (N1MM for contests, DX4WIN for my main log).

Just set your antenna ports correctly, which is simple. The only thing you
may have to occasionally tolerate are those stupidly ignorant antenna pop-up
messages that occur when switching bands (even when you're in "Expert" mode)
that the PowerSDR gurus don't want to fix or acknowledge as an especially
irritating problem.

Other than that, it will work great.

[Flexradio] 48 KHz Sampling & Center Freq Position

2009-02-16 Thread Joel Harrison

When I operate on 160 & 80 meters I run a 48 KHz sampling rate because my
noise floor is lower and I have better resolution to detect weak signals.

However, my center frequency on the panadapter is at least 3/4 of the way to
the right rather than in the center of the panadapter and unadjustable.

Is there anyway this can be changed to appear in the center as the "Center"
slider to does not do anything?

Yes, I know I can use the zoom control to adjust the display to less than a
48 KHz bandwidth and then adjust the center slider, however this is not
desirable as it reduces the viewable bandwidth. With the existing condition
I can only view 10 KHz above the center frequency and about 25 KHz below on
the panadapter rather than half & half.

Is there a way to correct this?

Re: [Flexradio] FlexRadio Digest, Vol 45, Issue 28

2009-01-30 Thread Joel Harrison

Everyone has their own preference and operating style. Mine is to leave the
keyboard for logging and auto CW sending of callsign, report, etc. and
using the mouse wheel or PowerMate for small frequency adjustment. I keep
the keyboard (and mouse) in the middle, with the PowerMate to the left for
frequency tuning in small increments with my left hand and the key paddle to
the right for CW sending with my right hand (I'm right handed).

I realize old habits are hard to break, and my old habits are probably worse
to break than the average ham but trying to make small finite frequency
adjustments from the keyboard through a secondary program hasn't worked well
for me. Point and click isn't the issue either because that works great for
moving quickly our jumping around, it's being able to tune slowly from one
station up a couple hundred hertz to the next during S&P or while working
split in an expedition environment.

Ruben's original inquiry, and my interest as well, is how to change
frequency in PowerSDR with a mouse wheel our external device without
PowerSDR being "mouse focused" (the active program), especially since
PowerSDR runs well and continues to actively function in that condition.

N1MM has the ability to control rig frequency with point and click on the
band map and the keyboard has incremental change with the + or- key, or is
it the up and down arrows I can't remember at the moment, increment size is
programmable in N1MM.
You can also change bands clicking in N1MM.
This works very well with SDR in a contest.
No need to go to the SDR window at all, unless you want to click on a signal
in the panadapter, N1MM has a feature option somewhere in it that when the
freq.
changes on the radio the focus goes back to N1MM.

2009-01-30 Thread Joel Harrison
Art,

It will not solve this issue, because even with two monitors, which I do
run, you can still only have one program in focus (active) for the
mouse/keyboard.

You will be able to see both programs running (which you can do with one
monitor), you just cannot have access each one in a dual fashion.

I am not really a contester but I do play around in them. I have found that
using two monitors solves most of those issues.

Greetings Ruben,

This is an annoying issue for contest/Expedition operation that I wish Flex
could find a solution for.

During a contest I have my logging program (I use N1MM) and PowerSDR on the
same computer. All works great, interfaces fine and there are no issue with
the exception that I cannot change frequency, either with the mouse wheel or
with the Griffin Powermate, without having the PowerSDR window in focus
(active). Of course, when I do that the N1MM logger window is not in focus
(active) and I have to continually click back and fourth between the two. It
isn't a problem if I'm running stations on a single frequency, as I just
keep the N1MM window in focus (active) and all is well, but when I S&P or
need to change frequency it is a problem because I have to continually click
back and fourth between N1MM and PowerSDR even though I have both windows
always viewable on the screen. Of course a "mouse click" is very quick but
it adds an additional step into a process that should not be (and isn't with
conventional radios) required.

Working a pileup in a split frequency scenario would be the same and having
to continually switch back and fourth between PowerSDR and your logging
program to bring each one into focus (active) will slow down your rate.

I've been compiling an "improvement wish list" from my contest operation to
send to Flex in hopes they can incorporate some of them.

Having the ability to just simply change frequency in PowerSDR with either
the mouse wheel or another external device (Griffin PowerMate, ShuttlePRO,
etc) without PowerSDR being in focus would be a HUGE improvement for contest
operation.

I'm sure the software guys are going to tell me it is much easier said than
done :-))

Hello friends:
We want use the FLEX-5000A in our next expedition.
When we go to a expedition weight is very important, and we can't have 2
laptops in a station.
We work always in Split.
TX is a fixed frequency and we listen 5 to 10 or 5 to 15 up.
The problem is:
We have to use the same laptop for logging and Powersdr.
The BIG problem is ... How can we change the listen frequency without
change from logging software to PowerSDR ?
Yes, we can use a shuttle pro, but can't change to powersdr in each qso
in a pile up.
Any help?
Any future accesories?

Has anybody done this in a dx-pedition?

This is the only "using" problem we have had with the Flex's.

TNX a lot.

Re: [Flexradio] CW Skimmer.....Again!

2008-12-05 Thread Joel Harrison

OK...CW Skimmer problem solved here at W5ZN.

Ed, N5DG, just dropped me a note and said to make sure spur reduction is not
checked.

It was.

As soon as I "unchecked" it everything is working FB.

I don't recall seeing this in the write up on the Flex site, so whoever has
access and control to that may want to put a note in there about SR.

No I have the question of what is it with SR that causes this problem. I
have been told to run SR on CW. It is confusing to me so I need to do some
study, but obviously you can't run SR on CW if you are going to run CWS.

Anyway, as usual many, many thanks to everyone for their help and mucho
thanks to Ed once again (he got me going initially with Skimmer) for his
help.

Are you using CW-L? If so I think you have to set the IF freq in Skimmer at

2008-12-05 Thread Joel Harrison
Hi Neal,

No, I'm using CW-U but everything I understand about this (VERY little)
indicates this is an Audio IF issue, I just don't what is causing it or how
to correct it.

I'll try 6400 just to see what it does. I did futz around with different
audio IF settings. Of course, it did change things it just didn't resolve
the problem.

The specific problem is this:

The frequency readout on PowerSDR and CWSkimmer are the same. If I change
frequency they both track and agree and are correct. I can see stations on
the CWSkimmer display, they are decoded and all is fine...except that the
frequency where the station is shown on the vertical frequency scale on the
right side in the Skimmer display is off by more than 3 KHz...sometimes a
lot more, and if I click on a station in the CWSkimmer disply, PowerSDR will
change to that frequency and the digital frequency display window in Skimmer
will change to that frequency also (same freq as displayed in PSDR), but
that ain't where the station actually is. The stations traces moves
somewhere else when I click it.

I've gone through the settings a hundred times on several different days,
I've completely uninstalled Skimmer and reinstalled it, changed settings,
rebooted, rechecked and recussed many times, so now I am seeking
professional help.

Any assistance and advice is greatly appreciated. All other 3rd party

working, just the freq issue.

Hi Brian,

The international ITU allocation to the Amateur Radio Service on 30 meters
is SECONDARY.

The Fixed Service has the primary allocation. The Fixed Service is usually
Military, so there are non-amateur stations that you will hear from time to
time on 30 meters and yes, it could be encrypted!

[Flexradio] Griffin Power Mate Latency Issue

2008-08-24 Thread Joel Harrison
Hooked up the Griffin PowerMater tonight so I could have a "fine tune"
control for my left hand while I'm sending CW with my right hand.

The PowerMate is working OK, but it seems to be experiencing some latency
issues. I do not have that with my mouse wheel.

The computer is a Dell with an Intel Quad Core processor and the CPU usage
does not spike up when this happens. CPU usage stays around 12-15%. The
sensitivity
slider in the PowerMate configuration window is set to max and the latency
issue does get worse if I lower the slider sensitivity setting.

If I turn the PowerMate wheel fast it freezes up the display for just a bit
until it "catches up". Again, I don't have this problem with the mouse wheel
and if I turn the mouse wheel fast PowerSDR just keeps on its smooth
operation.

Is there a hardware setting I'm missing to improve/correct the PowerMate
condition???

Any help on the Griffin PowerMate condition is appreciated.

Also, while I have the "floor", thanks to everyone that dropped me a note
about CW Skimmer. It is working VERY well now on my 5000A!

Yes I have seen the same bug, but didn't get around to posting it on the bug

low end and RX2 listening up in the phone section. I haven't tried it in

Subject: [Flexradio] RX2 Off Frequency Issue

I want to see if anyone else has reported or is aware of the following
problem. It pertains to the Flex 5000A with RX2 installed.

When RX1 is in CW mode and RX2 is in either USB or LSB, the RX2 frequency
will be off by the CW pitch frequency.

For example, if I have RX1 on 6 meter CW and RX 2 is on 20 meters USB, say
14185.0 listening to the guys there, to tune them in I have to go to 14185.5
(.5 KHz is my CW freq). If I change my CW pitch freq to 750 Hz, then I have
to tune RX2 in USB mode to 14185.75 to tune them in properly. The same thing
happens when RX2 is in LSB as well on, say 80 or 40 meters.

When RX1 is in a SSB mode, everything is fine, but this happens every time I
have RX1 on CW and RX2 on SSB.

W5LUA and I were chatting a bit earlier and I asked Al to see if his 5000
produced the same response and it did.

If you have both RX's on SSB and switch RX1 to CW, you will not notice the
frequency change in RX2 until you change the frequency. So, if you switch
RX1 to CW and move RX2 by 1 Hz it will jump to the CW pitch frequency offset
and RX2 will remain in that condition until RX1 is returned to SSB.

If RX1 is in LSB and RX2 is on USB everything is fine. It only occurs when
RX1 is in CW and RX2 is in SSB.

So, has this been experienced before by anyone? Is this a software bug?

Inquiring minds need to know!!

73 from your humble Flex Monster

No, it does not do it in reverse, but in reverse (RX2 on CW and RX1 on SSB)
you don't have a CW Pitch Freq that comes into play with RX2.

Yes I have seen the same bug, but didn't get around to posting it on the bug
tracker yet. I noticed it one evening on 40 meters with RX1 set to CW at the
low end and RX2 listening up in the phone section. I haven't tried it in
reverse, that is RX1 as SSB and RX2 as CW.

[Flexradio] RX2 Off Frequency Issue

2008-07-11 Thread Joel Harrison

[Flexradio] ATU in Flex5000

2008-06-20 Thread Joel Harrison

Greetings,

I've been tinkering with the ATU tonight for the first time since I received
my 5000A. Just about all of my antennas are resonant in the areas where I
operate so I haven't had the need for it, but my back up xmit antennas for
160 and 80 are inverted vees and of course the resonant bandwidth isn't very
large on them so I did some matching experiments tonight.

Couple of confusing things that maybe someone can help me with. The ATU
goes through its tuning cycle OK and the ATU settings window indicates a
match, displays the frequency, FWD power and SWR (it doesn't display
reflected pwr...it just reads zero all the time). The problem is these
readings don't always agree with the readings on the PowerSDR TX meter and
often the "High SWR" red warning message appears on the screen. I'm not sure
how these two are related or exactly where they appear in the TX RF chain,
but it is confusing that the ATU settings window displays significantly
different info than the PowerSDR TX meter after tuning unless this meter is
between the tuner and antenna, not before the tuner.

Also, the tuner doesn't seem to do a very good job of obtaining a match in
some areas. I haven't investigated the actual antenna impedance
characteristics so maybe it is outside the tuner's capabilities, however I
believe the tuner has some pretty broad specifications for an L network.

Anywho, any similar experiences or advice on the above situation would be
appreciated.

As you didn't say what brand of switch I can't be specific.
BUT!
By using Steve Nance's free DDTu program, It follows the PWSDR band in use
and sends the appropriate band/data info to my Quadra amp and changes it's
internal antenna switch.
DDTu also works with Palstar auto tuners.

So check it out, it may be what you are looking for.
Check the knowledgebase for the DDTu.

[Flexradio] 160 meter arcing

2008-05-24 Thread Joel Harrison

I am experiencing an internal arcing/frying sound from inside the 5000a on
160 meters anytime the RF power gets above 50 watts on any mode. This has
occurred since day on one my 5000. It occurs on all antenna ports and both
of my 160 meter antennas (shunt fed tower and inverted Vee) as well as my
dummy load.

I'm yet to raise the hood to investigate, before I do, any suggestions or
similar experiences?

This problem is ONLY on 160 meters. All other bands are fine with full 100
watts.

Re: [Flexradio] 6 meters

2008-05-23 Thread Joel Harrison

Phil,

I have worked a few stations on six meters, but the Flex 5000 performance
for sensitivity and noise figure on six meters is not up to most other
radios. It certainly is inferior to my Yaesu FT-920.

The noise figure of the Flex 5000 on six meters is about 15 dB. Most people
have added a preamp for six meters. I have not yet done that as most of the
commercial preamps available offer a low noise figure but have around 20+ dB
gain, which is a bit more than you actually need to perk up six meters and
that much gain will impact other parameters. Al Ward and I think something
around 10 dB with a low noise figure would be ideal, but we're still doing
some testing.

Bottom line - if six meters is "open" to your area you should hear stations
and make some Q's.even some long haul Q's. If you're a die hard six
meter DX'er the Flex 5000 needs a little help on receive.

The pan adapter is very nice as it allow me to view a large area of the band
and I have been able to see stations "appear" off of my receive frequency
that I otherwise would not have known were there.

[Flexradio] Windows Vista

2008-04-25 Thread Joel Harrison

Without having to spend a lot of time searching back through the reflector
emails for specifics, can those of you that are using PowerSDR with Windows
Vista tell me your experiences with both the SDR-1000 and the Flex 5000A
using that operating system?

I'm considering buying another computer similar to the Dell I purchased a
few months ago so one can be dedicated to the 5000A and the other to the
SDR-1000. The same Dell I purchased a few months ago could be purchased with
XP, now that option doesn't exist.

seems to have taken over. I looked at the list of exhibiters for the last 4

bigger and bigger. Take a look at the participating vendor list and you can
see why: http://www.hamcation.com/vendors.html

Other than the direct Flex employees are any of you other Flexers planning
on going? If so, I'd love to meet ya and shake your hand for being part of a
unique band of pioneers that is changing ham radio in a way that won't be
fully realized until people look in the ham radio rear view mirror a few
more years from now. From a garage experiment to a serious competitor in 3
years (what ever happened to Kenwood?) is nothing short of amazing. What
Flex has done for me personally is put the "wow factor" back in ham radio. I
will definitely be at the Flex booth for a while and happy to share my

Re: [Flexradio] FlexRadio Digest, Vol 27, Issue 6

2007-07-06 Thread Joel Harrison

Thanks Cecil, I appreciate the advice.

I thought I had stripped my systems down but obviously I haven't if you're
running that low CPU usage. I don't have experience to dig any deeper
without fear of going beyond a point of complete system devastation by my
own hands! :-)

I have about come to the conclusion that my computers just aren't meaty
enough to run 192 KHz with the Edirol, as you note. Sadly, Flex-radio says
absolutely nothing about minimum system requirements on the web page. All
they do is extol the glorious virtues of the products they recommend then
let you find out about the pitfalls on your own, and then you wind up having
to spend more money to get things working. That irritates me.

Yea, I know this is going to the entire reflector, but that is just the way
I feel. This is now the second time I've been in this situation with my
SDR-1000's when it could have been avoided by just some simple system
requirement statements on the web page. I guess everyone is expected to be a
computer expert beforehand.

Thanks again for the advice, Cecil. I appreciate it.

I'm not sure there is anything wrong, 30% usage at 96KHz sampling
will triple to quadruple the CPU usage at 192KHz. That is just the
way things are, however depending on your efforts there are a lot
more optimizing that can be done beyond the recommended options, but
few people have the experience to go there.

On a dual Pentium III 1GHz with 512 MB RAM and XP SP2, which is an
inferior machine to what you have I typically run at less than 10%
CPU usage with 96KHz sampling using a Delta-44, this is on a profile
that is fairly bare, no networking, therefore no anti-virus, no
firewall software, all services stripped that are not required for
that one profile.

[Flexradio] Edirol FA66 Problem

2007-07-05 Thread Joel Harrison
I recently purchased an Edirol FA66 and I'm having a trouble when using 192
KHz. Everything works fine on 96 KHz, but on 192 KHz the CPU usage is
pegged out a 100% and the system locks up. It does the same thing on two
different computers on two separate SDR-1000's Here are my specific details.

Computer 1 - Compaq EVO N610 Notebook, Intel Pentium 4, 2 GHz processor with
1 Gb RAM. Normal CPU usage on 96 KHz is approximately 35% (Same average CPU
usage with standard sound card, Presonus Firebox, used on this system)

Computer 2 - Dell Optiplex Intel Pentium 4, 2 GHz processor with 1 Gb RAM.
Normal CPU usage on 96 KHz is 30% (Same average CPU usage with the standard
sound card, Delta 44, used on this system)

Both system use Windows XP.

When switching to 192 KHz with the Edirol, the CPU usage ramps up to 100% in
about 2-3 seconds and stays locked up there. I have been through all of the
optimization routines that are recommended; I have been through the Edirol
setup numerous times to make sure I haven't overlooked something, but still
have the problem.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. There is no mention whatsoever on
the Flex-radio web site that a computer of this speed won't work with the
Edirol, so I'm assuming I'm just not doing something right in the setup
(yes, I am switching the Edirol and SDR-1000 to 192 KHz correctly).

Suggestions?

Re: [Flexradio] Recommended firewire cards for laptops ?

2007-01-12 Thread Joel Harrison
Everett,

I went through this same evolution about 6 months ago. I'm a firewire dummy
so I don't know the difference between a "400" and an "800" but I can tell
you this. I bought four different "off-the-shelf" PCMCIA Firewire cards at
various stores like CompUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. to use with a
Compaq EVO N-610C notebook computer (that did not have a Firewire port) and
Presonus Firebox that I have on one of my SDR-1000's.

All of the cards worked fine in the computer and all cards worked equally
well with the Firebox and SDR-1000. I could tell no difference in
performance between any of the cards.

The brand names on three of them were Compaq, HP, and Belkin. I don't
remember the fourth as I gave it away. They were all made in
Chinaprobably at the same factory and probably are all exactly the same
inside.

Which one did I use? The Belkin - only because its color scheme matches
everything :-))).

That's my experience. Again, I'm a Firewire dummy so that's all I can tell
you based on my experience.

[Flexradio] PowerSDR Waterfall Display

2007-01-11 Thread Joel Harrison

W5LUA and I were just chatting about the waterfall display in PowerSDR.

Right now it covers the audio bandwidth of the selected filter.

It would be really neat if you could use the waterfall display to view the

What would that involve?

Is it possible?

Is it possible now and I just don't know what the heck I'm doing? (don't

Re: [Flexradio] Forward Power Meter

2006-11-07 Thread Joel Harrison
Hi Eric,

Many thanks for the explanation!

No problem here on this end as I have an external meter that lets me know I
actually have "power out".

I'm just glad to know it wasn't something I was doing wrong!

Thanks again for the info.

Subject: RE: [Flexradio] Forward Power Meter

Joel,

This is an unfortunate side effect of having the CW process processed
differently than the rest of the DSP. It should be stated that ALL of the
power readings in the 1W mode are based on the input to the DSP (as opposed
to a hardware readout). Because of this dependency, in modes where we are
not using the DSP in the normal fashion, the meter does not read power.
These modes are TUN and CW.

This has been on the list for some time to fix, but it has just never gotten
to the top. A quick solution would just present a N/A in those modes.

Just to be clear, this is only an issue with the 1W radios as the 100W PA
has hardware that allows us to read both the forward and reflected power.

[Flexradio] Forward Power Meter

2006-11-06 Thread Joel Harrison
I have no power output indicated on the forward power meter during transmit
on the PowerSDR console while in CW and Tun. The correct amount of power out
is occurring and has been verified on an external in-line power meter.

The forward power meter on the PowerSDR console works fine in all other
modes and indicates power out correctly (USB, LSB, AM, FM, etc) it just
doesn't indicate any power out in CW or tune and just reads 0.

The same thing is occurring on two separate SDR-1000's, two separate
computers and does the same thing whether it is 1.6.2 or Beta 1.6.3.

What am I not doing right? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [Flexradio] Request Help with Problem

2006-10-19 Thread Joel Harrison
Greetings,

First, I want to thank everyone for the many helpful hints I received while
trying to resolve the computer problem I was experiencing below. While none
of the suggestions resolved my specific problem, they did allow me to
optimize my system and that is greatly appreciated!

I have finally identified the culprit to my problem and wanted to report
back in case someone else experiences a similar occurrence.

My notebook computer has an infrared port. It was enabled. Every 4 seconds
it would "pulse" in search for an infrared "mate" to hook up. It has now
been neutered and is no longer on the prowl.

My problem is solved!

Subject: [Flexradio] Request Help with Problem

I'm experiencing a problem I want to throw out here in case anyone can
provide some advice. I'm convinced (based on test results below) it is
computer related but can't seem to track it down. If you have any advice,
please respond directly to me as there is no need to take up reflector
bandwidth with this.

System:
Compaq Evo N610C computer, 2.0 GHz processor 1.0 GHz Ram, Windows XP
Professional
Presonus Firebox
USB connection to SDR-1000

Here is the problem:
Every 4 seconds or multiple thereof (mostly happens every 8 seconds) the
control panel will freeze up and lose receive audio for approximately 150
ms, then continue on only to occur again every 4, 8 or 12 seconds (mostly on
the 8 second mark) for the very brief ~150 ms. The main problem it causes in
annoyance in losing bits of words during receive. The system will run for
hours with no problem except this annoyance every few seconds.

It does not happen with the SDR-1000 connected to another computer. It does
occur with my other SDR-1000 connected to this computer. It does occur with
both USB and Parallel port connections. I've have increased and decreased
the latency in both the Firebox and PowerSDR control panels with no impact
on this condition.

I have attempted to identify if the computer is performing some other action
during this time but I have not found anything obvious. The CPU usage does
not "spike" during or close to this time, the hard drive does not become
active nor does anything else appear to "activate" during this very brief
condition that I have been able to identify. There are no other programs
running other than PowerSDR.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The Goddard Space Flight Center used to "re-transmit" some of the

do that or not.

Re: [Flexradio] Frequency Calibration on Recent SVN's

2006-09-10 Thread Joel Harrison
John,

I have noticed/experienced the same thing. It has nothing to do with weak or
fluttering signals. The 10 MHz WWV signal was very strong and steady and I
get the error message, but not at 5 MHz or 15 MHz. Only on 10 MHz.

FWIW, I found that if I used the WWV signal at 15 MHz the calibration
procedure appeared to work. If I try it at 10 MHz, I get the error
referenced in my previous message. The 10 MHz value appears to be
broken in the current SVN version. Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions.

[Flexradio] FW: Firebox with Windows 2000NT

2006-08-30 Thread Joel Harrison
Below is a response I received from Presonus regarding use of the Firebox
with operating systems other than Windows XP.

Eric/Gerald - I'd like to suggest you highlight this on your website
information regarding the Firebox. While the statement "that is ideally
suited for laptop PC applications." might be true it is NOT suited for all
laptop PC applications because of its restricted operating system
requirements.

Such a statement that it will only work with Windows XP will prevent someone
from falling into the trap I did of spending a lot of money for something I
couldn't use with the computer I needed to use.

Thanks es 73,

Joel W5ZN
