 Hi

I have a pismo 400 MGz running 9.2 and have been out of the country for 3
months so the laptop just sat in my apt un-pluged.

Before i left on my trip the laptop worked great -- now when i plug it in and
go to start it i get nothing -- nada -- zilch.

i tryed the reset button (holding for 10 seconds) still nothing and i know
the adaptor works as i tryed it on a friends pismo and it works.

so what do i do to start my powerbook as of right now it does nothing no
 chime etc.

Did you try to start it using Command+Control+Power?

PDF file

2003-10-09 Thread tivo
May be a bit off site topic, but how do I go about changing a PDF file to
another format once it's downloaded? I don't seem to be offered any other
options but image files (there are no images in the document).

I wish to change the format and then change the document to a more condensed
form for printing (such as using Word).

I've an iBook, OSX, etc.

Thanks, Tivo

Hi Tivo,
I'll try and help.
In Acrobat, there should be an edit menu, then select all, the copy
and paste into Word or other word processing document.

You will need to do this for each page of text in the pdf file, as
far as I can see. I have OS 8.1 and 9, so don't know if, in X, there
wouldn't be an edit menu.
HTH some!

Re: Battery and screen care

As someone who has been using Apple laptops since 1995 I can easily
state that I still share your enthusiasm. Congrats!

Anyway, I was wondering about some general maintenance stuff:

1. What do you clean the screen with?
The best stuff, by far, is put out by Klear Screen.
(www.klearscreen.com) Their products do not use alcohol - which is
terribly important - and are sold by Apple in the Apple stores. It's
what we use here for our PowerBook users and I wholeheartedly recommend
it.

You need to be extremely careful about what you use to clear and dry
your LCD display. Repeated use of alcohol-based products will, over
time, prematurely age your screen and cause discoloration and cracking.
Make sure to get a lint-free non-scratching polishing cloth. A
chamois is great but I use the Laptop ScreensaverZ from Radtech
(www.radtech.us). This nice piece of cloth serves a double duty: I
can clean my screen safely with it and it covers my keyboard when my
PowerBook is closed, preventing keymarks on the screen. The keyboard
can actually come in contact with the screen when it's closed and the
oil and dirt from my grubby fingers would necessitate my cleaning the
screen more often.

2. I'm normally working someplace where I can use the power adapter.
Is this OK, or does the battery need to be used occasionally and then
recharged? If yes, how often and how low should the charge go before
I recharge?
Someone else may correct me, but AFAIK, there is no memory associated
with the batteries Apple uses in the iBook and PowerBook. You can
either leave the computer plugged in or not; I've run my battery down
multiple times and have not yet noticed any dropoff in available
charge. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I wouldn't worry too much
about it.

Actually, the PDF file is more condensed than any Word file would be. That's
one of the reasons for using the PDF format on the web. If your PDF file you
downloaded seems large, it may be that it was generated from a scanned image
and if it was, you won't be able to copy the text with PDF Reader because it
really is an image. You should be able to print the file directly from PDF
Reader without going to the trouble of converting it, that's the point of
the PDF format in the first place.

Condensed may be the incorrect term for what I mean. In Word I can change
margins and utilize the entire sheet of paper to print, change fonts and
font size, and get rid of unwanted spaces. This is what I mean by condensing
-- using less paper and having more text on a sheet.

Essentially, you are saying you want to re-format the document, in that case
as long as the file was generated from a text document originally, it's
copy-paste to your hearts content.
Hopefully it's not a scanned document because you would then need some kind
of OCR software.

Adding a Firewire port

2003-10-09 Thread Mark
Hi all,

I'm recording with my Powerbook and a MOTU 828 audio interface. I am
also using a firewire hard drive to write tracks to.

My question has to do with adding a firewire port. I only have one on
my Powerbook, and was previously using the built-in hub port on the
firewire hard drive case. That port failed last night, and no longer is
recognized by my Powerbook.

Should I buy a Firewire hub? Or, should I buy a PC Card with a Firewire
port?

I'm interested in bandwidth problems that may happen by having an 828
and a hard drive on the same firewire bus. Is it better to use a PC
Card or a hub?

Un-plug it remove the battery, plug it back in and give it a shot, see

Phil, the only amplification I might make on your advice is that the
Li-on batteries have a life limit as to charge cycles, so short
charging them when they do not need much charging might constitute a
bad thing.

Certainly they are far removed from the memory-hampered Ni-Cad
batteries of old (and new Motorola GMRS radios). But our
compulsive desire to always have our batteries fully charged probably
contributes to shortening the lives of these high tech energy cells.

I thought about this after discussing the rather short life I was
getting from my cell phone batteries with a local vendor of same.
Same issue, and think of how many of us simply plug in our cell
phones to either our car or home charger every chance we get. Mine
have only been lasting about a year, though the advent of digital
service in our area has helped a lot (uses less power).

Comment, anyone?

When do you shut down your laptop?

2003-10-09 Thread Carl Testerman
I've just purchased my first laptop, one of the new 12 powerbooks. As
far as I can find, the only advice before moving the powerbook is to
wait until the light on the latch is blinking slowly (indicating that
the hard drive is spun down).

Do I need to shut down before taking the powerbook to work, (car
commute) or is it good enough to sleep and spin down the hard drive? I
have a padded shoulder bag, so it's reasonably well protected.

Thanks for answering this newbie question!

The only time I shut mine down is if I'm not going to be using it for
a few days (which doesn't happen very often :-)). Otherwise I just
put it to sleep, put it in my shoulder bag, and go.

Wallstreet + PCMCIA/Cardbus: Software or Hardware failure

2003-10-09 Thread Martin Schmidt
Hi *

two days ago my Wallstreet II/PDQ (233MHz, 256MB/30GB) suddenly did
not recognise my USB-PCCard any more. When I now insert the Card,
then the Finder thinks for a moment and then nothing happens.
Therefore I even fail to eject it (except using a paper clip when
switched off).
In addition my Firewire card seems to be recognised, but does not function.

On top of this bt cards are recognised by my wife's PC notebook
(although I cannot test their functionality since I do not have any
driver software for PC).

Any idea? A repair handbook I found somewhere suggest to replace
PC cardholder or I/O logic board, but this is suggested for any
failure when nothing else solves the problem. Is it really this
severe?

 Subject: PDF file

May be a bit off site topic, but how do I go about changing a PDF file to
 another format once it's downloaded?

Thanks to everyone for the input. The PDF file did open with Acrobat --
after refusing to do so earlier; thus the reason for my writing and asking.
I have no idea why it wouldn't open earlier.

The file when chosen as an icon is revealed as a Preview file; the
document thus cannot be fiddled with in any way. When the name of the file
is highlighted (on my desktop this color is yellow) the file remains in
Finder and I can then choose to open it from the File menu using
Acrobat.

But not a great deal is gained page printing-wise (as someone commented), at
least not with the 15 page document I was trying to compress. The PDF file
is the same number of pages, but the text font is a number of times smaller.

Thanks again to everyone, Tivo

Clamshell iBook and 10.2.8?

2003-10-09 Thread Kyle Lee
Hello all,

This Blueberry iBook was running 10.2.8, the original release, sinc the
original installation. It went to sleep tonight about an hour ago. Now
it will not boot from the HD, the Jaguar Disk or OS9.1 Disk. The screen
lights up at boot, the HD spins, the CD constantly spins up then down
over and over. If I press the start button and let go after letting the
computer sit running for a moment, I hear the familiar tone that you
would get under normal boot, the one you get when the dialog box
appears asking if you really want to shut down. If I hit enter/return,
as if to say OK, it shuts down. Any clues on how to get around this? I
have attempted booting with the option key down,

Thanks

Kyle

Clamshell iBook and 10.2.8? : UPDATE

2003-10-09 Thread Kyle Lee
Believe it or not. I booted the iBook and let it finish the boot
sequence. I could tell it was finished because the CD in the tray spun
up and I heard it mount. I then adjusted the brightness of the monitor
using the keys on the keyboard. The screen would go totally black and
extremely white, still no picture. So, I merely tapped the back of the
display and the picture returned. Any clues? I have taken many iBooks
apart completely but never the LCD.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: MAC BATT new bad Al-Book bat

2003-10-09 Thread Gary Kimes

how often and how low should the charge go before I recharge?
Someone else may correct me, but AFAIK, there is no memory
associated with the batteries Apple uses in the iBook and PowerBook.
You can either leave the computer plugged in or not; I've run my
battery down multiple times and have not yet noticed any dropoff in
available charge. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I wouldn't
worry too much about it.

But our compulsive
desire to always have our batteries fully charged probably contributes
to shortening the lives of these high tech energy cells.

I thought about this after discussing the rather short life I was
getting from my cell phone batteries with a local vendor of same. Same
issue, and think of how many of us simply plug in our cell phones to
either our car or home charger every chance we get. Mine have only
been lasting about a year, though the advent of digital service in our
area has helped a lot (uses less power).

Comment, anyone?

Jim

,, yes JIM Ill comment . and Im on your wavelength as regular
discharge is key to getting the most out of any of todays
rechargeable batteries I use and they hold a higher charge longer with
regular hard use. Im in the habit of always trying to use a full
charge cycle whenever possible. In fact if I use my AlBook away from
its electrical tether, in the evening, Ill not re-plug it in but set
it on the desktop and plug it in in the AM. But its not to say how
much more life Ill get from my new 15 AlBooks bats. Speaking of which=
They are sending me out a new battery for mine and I hope itll get a
better life than this one.. since new it didnt charge to more than 2
hrs 15 mins... but in actuality it would last no more than 1.5 hours of
browsing via airport. They want this one sent to engineering for
testing. I noticed that Gisela had this problem with hers too in
addition to the latch.. My latch works fine but that squeaky right
palm-rest is a bit of an irritant.. and an intermittently loud blower
under the E key

That sounds like a loose LCD cable. You could try taking it apart
and securing the connection, but these cables are extremely fragile.
If it's not the connector that's loose, you probably have a slight
(microscopic, even) crack or break in your cable that will positively
get worse if you try to fix it

Re: adding a firewire port

2003-10-09 Thread Simon Stone

 Date: Thu, 9 Oct 2003 14:14:58 -0700
 Subject: Adding a Firewire port
 From: Mark [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 In-Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Message-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Mark

Hi Mark,

the the only thing I can tell you is this: I have a Pismo with both OS 9.2 and OS
X an 828 MkI and a VST PCMIA firewire card. OS 9 cannot see the MOTU on the
cardbus port, only on the built in firewire ports while OS X accepts it on both,
and it works like a charm. My drives and CDRW are recognized everywhere by both
OS's. Hope this helps.

Simon

Re: Clamshell iBook and 10.2.8?

2003-10-09 Thread Brandy
Maybe it's just really tired and feeling little cranky!

Hello all,

This Blueberry iBook was running 10.2.8, the original release, since
the original installation. It went to sleep tonight about an hour ago.
Now it will not boot from the HD, the Jaguar Disk or OS9.1 Disk.
Thanks
Kyle

Re: When do you shut down your laptop?

2003-10-09 Thread Brandy
Do what your most comfortable with. Sleep or shut down. I sleep em' if
I will be using them and shut em' down if I'm not.

Carl

Re: updates for OS X 10.2

2003-10-09 Thread Steve Fuller
Does anyone possess or know of the existence of a CD of updates for
OS
X 10.2 that I could buy? My problem is an inordinately slow
downloading setup. Thanks much. Victor
Did you check the Apple store? Or the download area? I thought that
Apple
was selling such a CD a little while ago for something like $20...
I saw one of these very CDs last week while I was at the local CompUSA
store. Not sure how recent it was. I'm thinking 10.2.4 IIRC.

Re: PDF file

2003-10-09 Thread Brandy
I was just pointing it out FYI.. thing since some people are not
aware of it. I use Acrobat 6 Pro. for PC and OS X
I password protect and lock all PDF's I create. And like you said I
don't want any one fiddling with em'.

Hello Brandy,
I have Acrobat Reader 4, on my desktop, which was a free version, as
are all Acrobat Reader downloads, no?, and I can copy and paste from a
pdf to a word processing document.
If a pdf is locked and password protected - there's a reason for that
- they don't want the contents fiddled with. I might be wrong, but I
don't remember the original poster saying the pdf, they were referring
to, was password protected and locked.
