This is a year old G4 Powerbook. Of course, I am hoping that nothing goes
wrong with it, with or without Applecare, because I have no alternate system
and I certainly don't have the money to buy an equivalent replacement or to
obtain another system while I'm waiting for it to be repaired.

I have heard Applecare also tends to be pretty fast with repairs - sometimes
faster than if I were take it to a local authorized service center.

It's *always* faster than taking it to a local center. Portables have to be
sent to apple For repair if they are under warranty. That is a rule. Even
for a certified tech. So sending it to Apple directly is the fastest way.
That way you are skipping the middle man.

Apple also turns the machine around the same day they get it. Meaning that

  Bob

Who is the vendor of the card?

My Classic Gold card (802.11b) is an Orinoco card. If you're familiar
with the history of the original Lucent wireless technology, Lucent
became (I'm not sure this is the exact order, but the names are
correct) Orinoco, then Agere (moved to Agere Systems under the
Orinoco name), then Avaya, and Proxim. To the best of my knowledge
the same Lucent technology and the Hermes chipset is used in all of
the cards sold by the above companies -- and several others as well
-- **until** the some of the Proxim cards. But according to the URL
below, even the Proxim 8420 and 8430 should work at least with the
IOXperts driver.

A site I rely on heavily for chipset and driver information (although
it does not cover the sourceforge driver) is:
http://home.earthlink.net/~metaphyzx/Wireless.htm

If its the Proxim card (or a number of other
brands) it may be of a newer type that neither the SourceForge nor the
IOExperts drivers support.

You need to start with the model # of your card. Then you can go to
the URL immediately above and see what chipset it has and what
drivers will support it.

I bought a Proxim Orinoco Gold and had no luck with either

Can you be more specific on what you mean by had no luck with
either? What exactly were you trying to connect to?

I have found that the WiFi paradigm can be filled with so many
gotcha's that it's not funny. I usually recommend that folks set up
things with the absolutely simplest configuration (no passwords, no
WEP, no closed network etc), and try to connect to a known working
Apple Base Station network if at all possible. That eliminates a lot
of the unknown snakepits that will drive a new user crazy. Once
things are working on the elementary level, then you can proceed on
to passwording, WEP, MAC address filtering, and other complexities.

There is an excellent step-by-step initial setup list at
http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html. Although it
refers to the Orinoco software, the same principles apply when using
Apple's software or a 3rd-party driver.

, the card is not
built on the older chipset, and is sadly PC-only at present.

I don't know if Proxim has come out with any new 802.11b cards in the
past few years or not, but according to the Wirless.htm URL all
Proxim 11b cards should work with the IOXperts and/or the Sourceforge
drivers -- except for the Skyline USB card.

As Laurent has indicated numerous times, it's not the brand name on
the card that's the critical issue, it's the chipset that it uses
that determines its compatibility.

Ken Vann has an entire section (5.3) on his Web site referencing URLs
that have technical, or owner's, documentation for the
Lucent/Orinoco/Agere /Avaya/Proxim cards. Maybe something there would
help you.
http://www.home.earthlink.net/~kjvann/

I'm pretty beat tonight. I hope I have made sense and not messed up
what I was trying to say.

How do you know the card isn't being detected? The card won't show up
on the desktop, and Apple's Airport software won't detect the Gold
Card. Have you checked the System Profiler in OS X to see if the Gold
Card shows up there (it won't be identified as an Orinoco card, or
perhaps not even as a WiFi card, I don't remember for sure, but it
should show up in the proper en slot -- see below).

I'll ask you the same question that I asked Andrew earlier in this
thread -- exactly what kind of network connection are trying to make?
Is it through a 3rd-party WAP or an Apple ABS? Is it an open network,
or a closed network? Is it encrypted? Lots of questions.

I'm not in OS X now and it's been quite a while since I set my Gold
card up in X. But here are a few things I recall.
* You need to go to System Preferences Network Network Port
Configurations, and select the WiFi card there. If it does not show
up, try quitting and relaunching System Preferences.

* Do you just have one PCMCIA slot on the TiBook? It should be
designated as en1 or en2 I believe, and that has to be correctly
selected when you set up your TCP/IP settings for the Gold Card.

* If you have an internal Apple Airport card in your TiBook, you
*may* have to remove it for the Orinoco card to be recognized.

I'm not sure I have helped you much, Mikael. I'm having a hard time
getting the grey matter between the ears to work tonight. If I
haven't hit the nail on the head, hopefully I have said something
that will push you in the right direction.

Good Luck,

That is amazing !! There are always back ups/waiting lists at any local
center so they usually can't even look at your machine for a couple of days
after you drop it off. My old Indigo iMac spent 10 days at a service center
once...arrrghhh. Very frustrating because the majority of the time it was
on the shelf.

Since this is my first Mac Portable, this additional benefit of not having
to take it in and wait - and the same day turn around - is fantastic. I had
no idea they had that policy for turning it around the same day they get it.
I think I'm going to go ahead and buy the Applecare tomorrow. Feeling much
less concerned about spending $380-400 for it now, given all the comments I
have received here.

Thanks guys,

Amber

PS. I read somewhere that you have to buy it within 30 days of the one year
initial warrant expiring. Is that a new policy or is it still within one
year from the purchase date ? Hoping it's the latter.

They absolutely do have that policy. The only reason it would take more
than a day is if they needed a part...and that is unlikely. There are 3

2 of those 3 and they have the parts...believe me. When I sent my 667

If you have your original proof of purchase it won't be a problem. If you
don't have the POP then it goes by Apple's estimated purchase date.

Email me (Privately) your serial number and I can run it on GSX (Apple's

Re: Applecare for Powerbooks

2004-12-18 Thread Tim Collier
Unfortunately we folks in Florida can't take part in AppleCare. It
seems as though there were some unscrupulous folks floating around
after Hurricane Andrew back in 1992 and they ruined it for all of us.
As a result, there was a law passed in Tallahassee prohibiting certain
extended warantee's among which AppleCare was included. While it has
made us safer in Florida to some extent, I sure wish I could buy
AppleCare. Not that I've ever needed it, my Macs have been rock solid
hardware wise and software wise since I switched back in 2001. I know
this doesn't really 'matter' but I thought I'd let you all know.

Removable harddrive bay in FW box ???

bay things one normally has in PCs, but stuck it in a FW box ?
I have a Formac external Firewire CDRW box and I've replaced

drives that I put in it and I thought it could be good to have
a better disk swapping system.
Would it work ?
I have one bay type fitted to my PC but I believe the cable
type inside the drive box is the older style, would this affect
performance ?

Re: Orinoco Gold and TiBook G4

2004-12-18 Thread Kenneth Vann

From: Andrew F. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Who is the vendor of the card? If its the Proxim card (or a number of other
brands) it may be of a newer type that neither the SourceForge nor the
IOExperts drivers support.

I bought a Proxim Orinoco Gold and had no luck with either, the card is not
built on the older chipset, and is sadly PC-only at present.

Hello everyone. Before you purchase any Orinoco card to use on the Mac,
download the Orinoco Selection Guide.

Only the 8410-wd and 8410-jp (Orinoco Classic Gold Cards) support the Mac
under the Classic OS, and the Sourgeforce driver supports this card under
OS X.

PC Cards are price sensative and vendors do change chip sets in order to
shave pennies from the cost of manfacturing. A good example is Belkin

Following the discussion on the Pismo HD replacement with considerable
interest.
I am wondering if the harddrive specs for the Pismo are the same for
the Wallstreet Rev. 2 (PDQ).
Someone who is in the know please let me know.
Thanks.
The Wallstreet came with the larger 17mm drives, the Lombard/Pismo
could only use 12.5 max.

Actually, I was just looking at my original WallStreet (266, 4GB HD,
from the end of the production run as the Lombard was just about to be
or had been introduced) drive - I replaced it years ago, but had just
gotten a 2.5 case and was going to put the old drive in it now, only
to find it had mysteriously died - but anyway, I noticed in the
description on the label that it is 9.5mm.

So the Wallstreet fits a larger drive, but at least mine didn't come
with one.

(That measurement has gotta be the height, right? And it is a really
skinny drive compared to other notebook drives I've seen.)

Re: Applecare for Powerbooks (extended warranty)

2004-12-18 Thread Steve Fuller

Apple also turns the machine around the same day they get it. Meaning
that
if they receive it in the morning it will be shipped back out to you
the
same day fixed. The total turn around time can be as little as 72
hours.
It's freaking beautiful.
Agreed. I shipped mine to Apple on a Wednesday, they received it
Thursday AM, repaired the hinge assembly, and shipped it out to me the
same day. I had it back by 10 AM Friday morning. As I was away on
vacation on Wednesday and Thursday, I really didn't lose any use of my
laptop, except for Thursday night. Color me impressed.

We are all different. I have backup machines (a Lombard and a Windows

readable by both the Mac and PC. I have had computers go down before, and
even when I can fix it myself, having another machine to use in the meantime
is a lifesaver.

I have heard Applecare also tends to be pretty fast with repairs - sometimes

I have turned this decision over and over again in my head and don¹t see now
that I have any choice but to buy the Applecare.

Can a shop insist on this 30-day policy (that was my experience)?

No. It's not up to them. It's up to the APP approval department in Austin
TX. They may ask you to fax in a receipt, but even if you are close Apple
will still cover it. I have even seen Apple cover someone out of warranty
by a week or 2. The shop was probably just being lazy.

There are 2 dates considered. The real purchase date, that you have a
receipt (POP) for, and Apple's *estimated* purchase date. The estimated
purchase date is used if you can't find your POP and you never registered
your machine. When you register your machine it takes the registration date
and inserts it into GSX (the system we use to track repairs and order parts

Begginer question... Powerbook vs. iBook

2004-12-18 Thread Alejandro Desalvo
Hello. I'm new in this list and I understand my question may sound too
familiar to the members of the forum. But I'm planning to upgrade my system.
I acctually own a PPC 9600/300 and it's getting stucked in time, poor it...
;) So my idea is starting to work with OS X and G4 technology. My
application area is sound/video (Pro Tools basically). So my interest is
buying a G4 mac. The thing is that I live in Argentina and here it is more
diffcult to get this kind of technology for a young professional. Things are
quite more expensive in comparisson to US prices for example. Then I've had
this thought of buying a Powerbook because it seemed to me very practical;
more than a PPC in terms of commodities. Searching and looking for prices
I've seen that iBooks are considerably cheaper than Powerbooks. My first
conclusion was Powerbooks must be more prepared to perform in professional
areas with no touble. But yet a 1GHz iBook is very tempting for me. Then
finally my question: what are the biggest differences between this two
computers? what are the things iBooks cannot perform? are iBooks less
upgradable besides RAM and factory built HD?

I thank you all for your time and hope you can answer and help me.

2 off the top of my head are Finale, and Lime Notation.
Some of the MIDI sequencing programs will also do

Unfortunately I don't know of a program that will do that. I'm still
doing the actual transcribing. It merely slows the music down, and
allows you to loop a section over and over. Being able to listen to a
fiddle tune at 1/2 or 3/4 speed sure helps in figuring it out.

Re: Begginer question... Powerbook vs. iBook

2004-12-18 Thread Brian Rule
First of all, I've heard of electronics being seriously overpriced
where you're at, so if possible I'd look into some alternative options
of buying your new computer. How are the prices online at the apple
store compared to other places?
As far as comparing the two, the iBook is surprisingly close in
performance to the powerbook. With the powerbook what you're basically
paying extra money for are more ports, a couple of options and a faster
bus speed. The iBook will get heavy sound editing done, with the
addition of a peripheral or two, but the powerbook is more apt for the
task. I would keep in mind, though, that I've read that the latest
powerbooks audio out capabilities aren't all that great, so alot of
people end up buying audio in/out peripherals anyway for their
powerbooks.
In the end, the choice s yours. A desktop will always be more capable
of sound editing than a laptop, but either G4 books should do what you
need them to, with some added work on your part.
Brian

Re: Applecare/education discounts

2004-12-18 Thread Amber
What is the general rule of thumb regarding educational discounts from
Apple?

I was a student when I bought my Powerbook so obviously I got that on a
discount. No problem. I thought you had to be a full time student when you
purchased Applecare but when I called them (Applecare) yesterday, they
didn't seem to care that I won't be returning to school until after
Christmas.

I am just wondering if they could later void the warranty if they at some
point asked for proof that I was attending full time when I purchased it ?
If so, I would rather pay for the full Applecare.

Re: Begginer question... Powerbook vs. iBook

interest is buying a G4 mac.
The 9600 is a nice box. Don't forget to shop for processor upgrades,
in your price comparisons.

Also don't forget things like the iMac G5. MacWorld is coming soon,
so the older models will be discounted...

The thing is that I live in Argentina and here it is more

Local pricing vs Exchange rate vs Customs regulations fees.
Find out what/how can be shipped to you. That opens a lot of options
- eBay, Outpost.com, etc.

I've seen that iBooks are considerably cheaper than Powerbooks. My first
conclusion was Powerbooks must be more prepared to perform in professional
areas with no touble. But yet a 1GHz iBook is very tempting for me. Then
finally my question: what are the biggest differences between this two
computers?
The iBooks are basic consumer/student machines. Slower system buses,
lower-quality screens, etc. The current iBooks seem to run hotter
than the PowerBooks too, I noticed (hand on the bottom, in the Apple
Store).

The PowerBooks are higher-end equipment, all around.
My personal preference is for PowerBooks. I have two beefs with
iBooks: 1) their screen's color reproduction isn't as good as it
could be. 2) My local repair shop has seen too many that needed the
harness between the body and screen repaired.

Really, the bottom line tho, is that you should find a store that
sells both and try them out. Specs aside, it's what feels good that
matters most.

I have used a Logitech KB/Mouse combo (and separately) with no
problems, also have hooked up a USB Wacom Tablet on occassion works
just fine.

Go to an Office/Electronics Mega store (if possible) and try a few out.
Everybody has a different preference for feel and response. I have been
happy with Logitech and Microsoft products.

I dislike the feel of the Apple keyboard that came with my new iMac so
the KB and mouse never make it out of the box for long.

The folks at work love the Apple mouse and can't understand how I could
use a Multi-button mouse or a Trackman.

Applecare for Powerbooks

2004-12-18 Thread Will S

Many/most people seem to find Applecare money well spent on Powerbooks
. It really depends on how much longer you plan on keeping it and how
dependable it needs to be and can you afford expensive unexpected
repairs on a machine you need ASAP.
I've been trying to suppress a rant on the declining quality of
Apple's products and electronics and consumer products in general for
about a week now, and can bite my tongue no longer.
I hear you :-) I like to buy the best I can afford and hope and expect
it to last a long time. I hate buying stuff that doesn't last and that
isn't worth repairing when it breaks.

I expect electronic stuff to last a minimum of 5 years and motor
vehicles at least 10. I have a 20 year old Ten-Tec ham radio
transceiver that works fine, and put over a 1000 trouble free miles a
month on a 1983 BMW motorcycle this year. I also have a '98 Ford Ranger
in the fleet that needed one repair (rear brake linings) in 80,000
miles and an '84 BMW motorcycle that has had no major repairs in
100,000 miles. In my house I have 1985 Epson, 1990 Panasonic, and 1995
Mitsubushi laptops that still work, and on my desk sits an '99 vintage
333 mhz. iMac that has never failed me.
My Peaches,
1939 Hallicrafters transceiver . One repair a new tube in apox 1982 but
I've only owned it for 35 years ;-)
1958 Mercedes Benz 190 Sedan. Apox $800.00 in repairs in the last 20
plus years since my Grandfather gave it to me. It was a daily driver
for him since new and 12 years for me! Volvo 240 1985 sedan 220,000
miles still runs as good as new. Umax J700 Mac clone machine 1997
model Zero repairs but a fair amount of upgrades. Runs all day most
every day currently running OSX 10.3.7 with 533 MHz CPU great work
horse. Pismo Powerbook other then close to needing a new battery has
been great. No Apple care bought nor needed(I got lucky).
That's the peaches, and now the lemons: A 2001 Yaesu ham transceiver
that is broken beyond repair after less than 2 years service. A 1992
BMW motorcycle that needed $3000 worth of repairs before the warranty
expired. That bike now spends half it's time sitting in my garage
waiting 'til i can get a good deal on used parts to fix it's latest
failures.
And Apple?
lots of snips taken:
Lemons for me: To many to remember I guess but not as many as a lot of
people. I do my homework and make every effort to buy quality for the
best price I can find.
About the time the G3 PowerBook production was winding down Apple
limited AppleCare protection to the first 3 years of life. I take that
action as an admission that Apple's hardware is now so unreliable and
difficult to repair (compare hard drive replacement on a Pismo to the
latest AlBook) that they'd lose money if they guaranteed it past 3
years. Apple may also be trying to manipulate if not force us to buy a
new Mac every 3 years. I paid $2200 for my Pismo only because I
expected a quality product that would last at least 5 years. After 3
years I am left with a laptop so unreliable I don't take it out of my
house. Suffice to say, I won't be waiting in line at the Apple Store to
buy a new PowerBook or probably anything else Apple.
	Dyna
Your right about what Apple is doing. Not that I approve in any way but
other companies are doing the same. See your example of BMW now
compared to a few years ago. What are you going to do? Buy a Dell the
next time around? Good luck with that ;-) People are still bitching
about Apples stuff being too expensive and it has always cost them
market share. Needing to buy a warranty rather then it coming with one
has always pissed me off. It is a fact of life in competing in todays
market it seems. Most people buy on price and so do I . I've found that
with careful shopping I can usually get the good stuff for the same
price as the crap. When the guy at Fry's asks me about the extended
warranty . I always feel like saying I don't want to buy anything that
needs one but what good will that do me and how can you tell. It does
seem there are fewer and fewer companies with quality products...wait a
min everything is made in China while Americans are out of work...go
figure. later Will

Pismo failed ram?

2004-12-18 Thread Stuart Saunders
Dyna,
You might consider to upgrade your Pismo to G4. This may or may not
solve the problem, but if it does, will give you a much better
computer. I did this recently through Daystar, and after a few
problems, (backside cache not recognized - new daughtercard sent under
warranty) I have a much faster computer. (Plus a new 7200 rpm drive
which helps)
Talk to them about your problem - see if the upgrade might solve it.
As it looks like you are going to be up for some expense anyway, the
upgrade might be a useful 'life extender'

There are other companies doing this upgrade, but Daystar seems to
have more good things being said about it.

Good luck.

malfunctioning. Of course, that is not an easy item to replace.
It could then be the processor daughtercard, then. If your Pismo is a
400MHz, you might be able to find a replacement on eBay for around
$60-$70.
I've got a 500MHz a few months ago for around $130, which reminds me I
still
have that 400MHz one somewhere.

Re: mdf mds files

2004-12-18 Thread Ben Dyer
They're Alcohol disk image files, equivalent to .dmg or .cdr on Mac OS
X systems. You should be able to mount the .mdf file (the .mds doesn't
seem to be vital) by changing the extension to .iso, and opening it
with Disk Copy / Disk Utility.

For more information, take a look at
http://www.google.com/search?q=.mdf+file and
http://www.google.com/search?q=mdf+file+mac+open

Cheers,
Ben

ibook bright spots

2004-12-18 Thread Simon
I own a 933Mhz G4 14 iBook which I bought back in May 2004. Over
time, bright spots started appearing on the LCD. Nothing that
obstructs the function of the lappy, but it is quite distracting. I am
aware that this problem is common among Power books, but haven't heard
anything about it appearing in ibooks. While the ibook is still under
warranty, and I've purchased applecare, I don't really want to part
with my iBook for a week. Is there anything I can do to fix it? Or is
this an issue that only Apple Techs can handle?

Simon
