third-party power adaptor
Hi, I asked this question yesterday, but as an addendum to a not-really- related topic, so it may have been overlooked. I've just bought a Micro Accessories power adaptor for my pismo. It's this one, from OWC: http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=6431Item=MICACADPTG3 This is sold as a Powerbook G3 adaptor, and I was told that it is suitable for a pismo, but I noticed that it's rated at 65W, whereas the original Apple adaptor is 45W. I'm fairly sure this is not a problem, but before I barbecue my Powerbook, can anyone confirm that? thanks, TimH -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: third-party power adaptor
The power rating simply indicates how much current the adapter can supply without burning out. Using a higher-rated power supply is fine; if anything, it will lead to fewer adapter heat problems. Re: third-party power adaptor
When I bought my newest powerbook, the Genius at the Apple Store told me that I could use any of the adaptors interchangeably with any of my currently in use 'books (a wallstreet 300, TiBook 667, AlBook 12 1.33, AlBook 15 1.5) (as long as the connection fits) except for the 15 which needs a 65W adapter. I have 2 45W apple adapters, 2 65 W apple adapters and a Madsonline 65 W adapter. I'm fairly sure this is not a problem, but before I barbecue my Powerbook, can anyone confirm that? No problem at all. If the adapter supplies 24vdc at the amperage you need, any reserve capacity is gravy. Note that using a 45W on a 65W book is unlikely to be fatal as well. a) The PSU only works hard when BOTH recharging a dead battery and running the book. b) They are switcher supplies; if you DO attempt to pull too much current, it will do two things: get a little warm and reduce its output voltage. As a result, the laptop battery will recharge slowly, or maybe just keep up. One of the 3rd party suppliers [?iGo? maybe] tells you that. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: third-party power adaptor
No, no problem. Current and power, when indicated on the adapter itself, are to be treated as maximum ratings (there's normally a bit of wiggle room, though). So, the *actual* current and *actual* power output will be determined by the load. Cheers, Ben On 21 Jan 2005, at 01:36, Tim Hodgson wrote: OK, many thanks. That leads to one last question! When I asked her What if a person`s keyboard breaks?, she told me that if that was the case, the person would have to buy a new computer. Aase :) Changing the keyboard is a fairly easy process, you just have to be careful. Just look at the section for upgrading your memory in the iBook manual (PDF version here: http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Manuals/ibook/0221682i BookG4UG.pdf) It is under the Enhancing your computer section of the manual, page 55. After removing the metal RAM Shield you will see the connector for the keyboard. Look at the second and third pictures here http://www.bluap.nl/mac/ibookdual.php?ibookid=3 for the ram shield and keyboard connector. You just have to slide up the top part of the connector which will release the keyboard cable. Then pull out the keyboard connector, slide in the new one, and push down the top of the connector to lock the cable in place. Check here for more instructions on removing a zif cable http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pcyc/zif.htm Then change you keyboard type under system preferences. If you ever need to send the laptop in for apple care just swap the old keyboard in and you are good to go. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: To iBook or AlBook, that is the question
Go for the PowerBook, it's alot more 'Book fer yer dough. If it's working now it'll almost certainly keep on working just fine. Only caveat is the same as with any mechanical-and/or-electronic device (used _or_ new) - expect it to eventually fail in some way and be prepared for that eventuality. dan k . http://macdan.n3.net/ carracho://dankephoto.dhs.org:9700 hotline://dankephoto.dhs.org:9500 . -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Scanner Recommendation?
I'm starting to look for a scanner to use with my PowerBook 17 running OS X 10.3.7. Microtek is ruled out. I had previous bad experience with them, mostly lack of support. Laurent: I'm using VueScan (as my scanner software) and an older USB Canon scanner I picked up off eBay for about $14.00 bucks. It does good basic scans ... if you're interested in something more far-reaching high-quality, I don't know what to recommend. Re: Applecare, how long should it take?
I just called Apple wanting to know what is going on with my iBook. The replacement LCD for it still has not arrived, and I will have to wait now until at least monday to find out if one will show up. I turned it in on the 7th, so right now we stand at 13 days since I turned it in for a service that was supposed to take 7 days tops. By the time monday pops around it will be up to 17 days repair time, and it's not even supposed to be done by then, best case scenario. I'm starting to get irritated to say the least. Hi Amber, What software are you using with it? Something provided by Epson or a 3rd party? I'd rather try to find one with working software because the cheapest 3rd party scanning software I found are all over $50, which adds up to the total cost. Re: WallstreetI RIP
Going back to classic MacOS was a bit painful at first when I set up a Kanga for my daughter, but the more I played with it (I hadn't touched classic MacOS since I switched to Windows in 98 and back to Mac in 04) the less annoying it was. There are some things I've found better in OS9 than OSX, at least for the way this one will be used (the Launcher is much easier for a child than the dock), and the system (OS 8.6) is MUCH faster than OSX (10.3.7). For comparison, I am using both a 1GHz 12 G4 PowerBook (768 ram) and a 400MHz Pismo PowerBook (512 ram), both with 5400rpm hard drives for OSX and a 250MHz Kanga G3 with the original 5GB 4200 rpm drive in OS 8.6, and everything from booting to application launch is appreciably faster on the older laptop, with the single exception of waking from sleep, which is MUCH faster in OSX. Just for giggles, I installed Office 2001 and carried that old Kanga around with me for a day, and while much heavier than my two more modern machines, the old Kanga with 8.6 was able to do everything I do on a computer with speed and ease. Even Mozilla works well, though is slow to launch. I wouldn't want to switch back to the classic Mac OS for stability reasons, but it really isn't as bad as I thought it was. Options with an external HDD. . .
Hello, Just wanted to know what my options are with OS X on my Pismo using an external HDD. I've got a 30 gig internal, and a 70 gig firewire external. I need to know. . .can I (besides backing up) move my iTunes music to this external drive and expect it to work? Re: Scanner Recommendation?
Laurent, I have used both HP and Canon scanners, as well as others. From my experience it depends on your use of the scanner. If you are using the scanner occasionally for home level scans then HP scanners will work great, however if you require more frequent usage and pro level features, then I would choose and recommend a Canon product. I have had great experiences with Canon products and definitely will continue to use and recommend Canon products. iBook issues. . .
Hello folks, Here's something to ponder. . .my roomates iBook 14.1 is having issues. I've already wiped his hard drive clean and re-installed OS X, but it's happening again. From time to time, his hard drive makes strange noises. . .like a faint grinding sound. Then, the computer freezes. After resetting it, it stalls for a long time, then the screen goes to black and we are prompted with the console! I've only seen this once a long time ago with a PowerMac G4, but that problem was caused by the G4 overheating (it was an upgrade card that didn't have sufficient cooling.) Hi John: Thanks for that information. It is a good bet that it is a simple lack of system maintenance, as you pointed out. We will see if that does the trick! I don't do maintenance on his machine, because it is a University machine. And he would not be doing maintenance on his machine because he is one of those people who just expects the machine to function. I am not yet very experienced with OS X because I am still running 9.2.2 on my Pismo, and until such time as I find employment that will continue to be the case. Besides, if I understand correctly, once I migrate to OS X--though it is a wonderful OS--there will be no more printing to the NeXT Laser Printer.
