My final post on G-Books...
Hi all... Just a little note to let you know I had to sell my Wallstreet PDQ. I did this reluctantly...hard times necessitated the sale. I hope it got a good home. As such, I'm going to be unsubscribing. I still have my Blue And White and my antique Macs so I'll still be on some other LEM lists. Keeping the WaveLAN card in at all times...Wallstreet PDQ...
Hi guys, quick question... I know about all the problems that exist with the Wallstreet card cage. I want to know if I can leave my WaveLAN Silver card in permanently even when I am using wired Ethernet like I usually do. If I can keep the card in forever maybe I'll never have to deal with the dead card cage situation. Oh yeah, I'm going to give the AirPort drivers a go. I want to be able to run Classic Stumbler and the IOXperts driver isn't supported by Classic Stumbler. The HD (hitachi travestal 40 GB, 5400 rpm, just over 1 year old), which I normally do not hear, was making some noise, a regular noise, as if it were stuck searching some data or so. It was supposed to be idle. Ouch. That's a failing drive. I have noticed that after I replaced the HD in my Wallstreet with a larger one (a 10GB pull from a friend's Pismo) the machine got noticeably warmer than it had been with the stock 2GB drive. However, this is different. I have an IBM 20GB 5400MB drive that is starting to fail, but luckily is hanging on pretty well. It occasionally reseeks and makes little clicking noises. This drive is going to get replaced really soon. I suggest you be maximally careful and back up regularly. You will probably be able to get some more time out of the drive but it will eventually go bad. Since it's such a new drive, you probably still have warrantee on it. Notebook drives tend to have longer warrantees on them than desktop drives, which most of the time only have a year's warrantee. Contact Hitachi right away and get an RMA for it. Not a lick of trouble either on my Wallstreet II PDQ or my ThinkPad 600E. I think these are pretty simple electrically, because basically there is an IDE controller onboard the Compact Flash card. On other kinds of Flash, like Memory Sticks, SD/MMC, SmartMedia and so on, there is no controller, therefore the adapter has to be a bit more sophisticated. Every person I know who has dealt directly with IBM has had no problems, no headaches, no worries. Technical Support Apple has made improvements in technical support that I am sure many of you have experienced. The addition of the Apple retail stores to the already effective Apple Specialists and the direct telephone support has made Apple the clear leader in this category, scoring 79 on desktops (compared with Dell at 62 and HP at 55) and an impressive 82 on laptops (compared with Dell at 60 and Compaq at 49). Apple got high marks for solving problems the first time, expertise of the support staff, effective web-based tech support, and shorter telephone hold times. Again, where is IBM here? I have never needed to use IBM phone service, but their website is pure gold and they have tons of support info on every ThinkPad they have ever released. You can even download the SHOP MANUALS on ThinkPads and Desktops in the support area of IBM's site...Does Apple do that? Does ANYONE do that? I think not. Certainly Apple rules all in both categories. But I can't possibly think that Dell, Toshiba and HPaq would beat out IBM in any category...especially HPaq, which makes great printers still but aside from their server-class gear their computers suck. In addition, with a TiBook or a black G3 you get PCMCIA card slots. Apple seems to have phased them out in favor of relying on USB and FireWire periphs, but there is nothing like a PCMCIA Compact Flash adaptor, for example, to help you get your pictures off your digital camera. Transfer times are way better for PCMCIA than for either USB or (gag!) serial port. It works almost as fast as a hard drive to hard drive transfer, which is not surprising considering that CF is an IDE device just like your hard drive. With the TiBook, also, there is the problem of the titanium case interfering with the AirPort antenna. Put a Cardbus 802.11b or 802.11g card in the PCMCIA slot and you are good to go. Especially if you also have a card which allows hookup of an external antenna. Any black case G3 will still boot MacOS 9 just fine. If my memory serves me right, the same case exists with the TiBook. However, the Ti is a bit fragile, and requires a lot of TLC to keep going right. The black G3s are a bit more sturdy, although the classic hinge problem is a bugaboo with all of them, as is the auto-eject mechanism on the Wallstreet. shiver BTW WallyNavi, my Wallstreet PDQ, is very happy with Yellow Dog Linux. YDL is kind of fiddly to install, although my friends in Santa Barbara Linux User Group (yes I live in LA but I am a member of SBLUG because they are just a lot nicer and a lot more helpful than the membership of San Fernando Valley LUG and Simi-Conejo LUG have been) assure me that it was a lot more fiddly in the beginning. You basically have to put several Linux kernels into your System Folder and install a control panel/extension/app combo (BootX) to turn your MacOS 9 install into a dual-boot MacOS 9/Linux install. Once you get to New World Macs it's a lot easier to install...Open Firmware doesn't care what your OS is, just so long that it is bootable. The Lombard on up are New World Macs so everything's cool. I have even had great success with OpenOffice.Org, the Free/Open Source office suite that gives MS Office a serious run for its money and writes valid MS Office 97/98/2000/2001/XP/X files...and it's GRATIS too, folks! After using it for a whole year or so on Linux on x86 machines it's great to have it run on a Mac. OO.Org does have a MacOS X version, but it doesn't run under Quartz...you have to install the Apple X11 Services to have it work there. Under Linux and under Windows (yes! It does Windows) it basically Just Works (tm). Once you add Linux to a Mac that is just not cut out for MacOS X, you have a UNIX-like operating system of your own that is stable, crash-resistant, multi threaded, has preemptive multi-tasking and all the other goodies that make MacOS X such a joy to work with. You also get about 98% of the apps that people running Linux on x86 machines do...the other 2% of the apps that don't recompile for Linux are the same that don't recompile for MacOS X. Those usually have x86-dependent code or don't survive the endianness flip gracefully. To explain endianness there is a great entry at http://www.everything2.com/ . Unfortunately I can't figure out a way to give you a direct link. This means that in this period when people are moving away from creating programs that will run under MacOS 9 and below and basically moving their Mac software to only support X, the main way that X-challenged Macs can remain useful is to dual boot a PPC Linux distro. Yellow Dog is not the only PPC Linux distro...there is Mandrake 9.1 PPC now, which I haven't tried, and there is Debian PPC and even Debian 68K which are the best options for those Macs a bit too old to run Yellow Dog. On the 68K end there is also NetBSD which is a great thing for any old 68K machine with a PMMU and a FPU. In all cases of Old World Macs, you have to have a Classic MacOS boot partition and run BootX as a loader. You can't get around that. Once you get around the fiddlyness of installing Linux using BootX to load the installation kernel everything else is fairly easy. WallyNavi is still up in Santa Barbara because it's getting some tuning and some attention from my Linux guru friends. But I look forward to having it back down again and showing the x86 snobs at SFVLUG (they aren't all that way...one of the leaders even has an iBook now) how evil 'leet my Black G3 PowerBook of Doom is. Re: Error Msg of Inpending Doom?
On Tuesday 12 August 2003 12:58 pm, Dan| Colwell wrote: Hi all, I have a recurring error message. In the last 2 months it has shown up 5 times, the shortest span being 11 days apart. Here it is: There is a problem with the disk Macintosh HD. Some information may have been lost. Check any recently used files for data loss, and use a disk repair program on the disk. This might be MacOS getting S.M.A.R.T. information from the HD. I am not sure whether MacOS actually can read S.M.A.R.T. or not, but you can query a drive under Linux and if S.M.A.R.T. is activated it will tell you whether the drive checks out or whether there is something suspicious going on. S.M.A.R.T. is not infallable but it's useful in some cases of incipient drive failure. Here's an explanation of what S.M.A.R.T. is: Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System (S.M.A.R.T.) was developed to monitor and attempt to detect hard drive failures. It uses added intelligence in the hard drive firmware to sense minor changes in the drive which usually lead to failures. One white paper claims that SMART can detect 70% of drive predictable drive failures. Sounded pretty serious to me..I have OS 9.2.1 on a 400 MHz Pismo with 320 RAM. I cannot use my USB mouse but the trackball works. Time still runs. Opened note pad, but froze on Simple Text. Control/Open-Apple/Power button gets it to restart, but gets to smiling Mac and then continuously loops through the restart process until I press the reset button on the back. That gets it so I can start up fine, just needing to reset Time Date. I have run Norton Disk Doctor, DiskWarrior and Disk First Aid and all checks out fine. Until it happens again. Are you getting clicking noises when this happens? Any other funny noises? Whines? Growls? I am anal about backing up (that little USB jump drive is sooo cool), and I have just convinced my wife that I need a bigger HD anyway. (oops, sorry, I should have mentioned I have 10GB, I believe it's the original. I bought this for myself last Christmas...) I'm leaning towards the 40GB Travelstar and hope that it will solve the problem and be a lot quieter BUT would like to know more about this error and what to do to avoid it in the future. I don't know if Pismos are susceptible to the Sleep Of Death but people have had very strange problems with IBM Travelstars and the magnetic switch that tells a Wallstreet that the lid is closed so put the machine to sleep. If you shield the drive in a strategic place with a non-conductive metal plate like a brass plate you can avoid the problem. I haven't heard of Pismos or Lombards having this problem but it's something to look into. Yeah, definitely replace that hard drive. If MacOS is able to receive S.M.A.R.T. messages from the hard drive that indicate the drive is in distress, replace it now while you still can. It is likely that you can recover information from the HD using an USB or Firewire external case. Oh yeah, definitely go OS X on your Pismo. I am not using it on my Wallstreet because of its slower processor and other limitations but there is no reason not to with your machine. Especially if you wind up with a 40GB HD. -.\\-H- -- Michelle Klein-Hass Box 2273, Van Nuys, CA 91404-2273 Brought to you by Linux, KDE and KMail...try it, you'll like it! -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I ask this not only because I want to shop around and compare prices but also because my local stores don't seem to carry the Orinoco card. I have found some good deals on cards by Lucent, D-Link, Linksys and the like, but of course they don't officially have any Mac support. Is a card just a card, or is there something Mac-specific I need to be looking for? Orinoco just has the best record of working with Powerbooks. I have a Lucent WaveLAN IEEE but I needed to buy the payware 802.11b driver from IOXperts in order to make it work. http://www.ioxperts.com/ If you are looking for a bargain-basement card you should go to the IOXperts website and check their list of supported cards. Also you should factor in that the driver costs $20. You cannot run the driver for longer than 30 minutes without registering. Some 802.11b cards do have Macintosh drivers. You will just have to consult the manufacturer's site. However, the Orinoco has been known to work with the AirPort drivers that come with MacOS X, so that's another reason to go with that. 3. My wife's laptop (which will be the other computer connecting wirelessly) is an iBook with an Airport card. Does this fact change any of the above? Nope, you should be fine. It excuses itself as a venue only, but provides a venue that allows crooks to flourish. That is MY opinion, and I care to post it here. The irony of all this is that I willingly (although reluctantly) gave up my eBay account and my PayPal account because eBay will give anyone who represents themselves as a Law Enforcement officer extensive information on user accounts. All you need is a fax machine and faked letterhead to make it seem like you are faxing your request from a Police or Sheriff's Department. My reason for leaving eBay is because I didn't want to risk my identity to thieves who might use this willingness to share information with those who represent themselves as cops. When identity theft and fraud are felonies, you think that a criminal will go oh, impersonating a police officer is a misdemeanor, I'd better not do that. Perhaps if you had faxed your request for information on that fraudster on official-looking Police or Sheriff's Department letterhead, you might have had better luck in getting eBay to sit up and take notice. eBay alternatives include Yahoo Auctions and Amazon Auctions/zShops. (a) the fan kicks on only when the processor temp gets too high (b) if the fan fails to kick on, and the temp is way out of spec, the machine will simply shut off spontaneously to prevent long-term damage. the heat sink being too hot to touch is not surprising - it's a heat sink, that's what it's there for. RAM is one of the hottest items in a computer, and when you max RAM as you have done, the heat's going to go up. to give you a parallel, i have a PowerBook G4 867. When i have only 256MB RAM in it, the fan only kicks on a couple of times a day, and only runs for a few minutes when it does. When I upped to 1GB RAM, my fan comes on once every couple of hours, and probably stays on for 20 minutes. Also, have you replaced the HD? The 2GB that came stock in my Wallstreet seems to run cooler than the 10GB Apple-branded Toshiba that replaced it. The drive was originally a stock drive from a Pismo. Re: Sudden battery failure
On Wednesday 02 July 2003 09:55 am, Jeremy Derr wrote: since the advent of the LiION battery, there's not as much you can actually do to maximize your battery's life anymore. (comparatively speaking - NiCad batteries are the other extreme). you can count on several hundred charge cycles and/or a few years of use out of a LiION battery. the best way to insure a long life is probably just to make sure it doesn't stay empty for long. but, like all batteries, even a LiION battery will only live so long. the rechargeable PMU battery is the same way, but doesn't -tend- to die unless the machine is shelved and not plugged in for many many months (say, 12-18 months). though it will eventually die even if used consistently. if removing AC power is causing the time to reset in addition to shutting off, i'm going to say it's probably -both- the backup battery and the LiION battery. OK here's the deal about that. If removing AC Power is causing the time to reset, you might need to just keep your PowerBook plugged in overnight to make sure the backup battery has enough backup to do its job. My Wallstreet PowerBook WallyNavi used to not be able to maintain PRAM info and it was like that for a long time. Apparently the friend I bought the PB from kept it in the closet for a while and didn't plug it in on a regular basis. Now that I use it on a regular basis, usually on AC power, it maintains the date just fine. Pull the battery and leave it off the battery for more than a couple of minutes, however, (like you do when you do an upgrade) and you will have to reset all the PRAM info. However, since I am running WallyNavi primarily on AC power, I wonder if I am not doing right by the batteries. Do LiIon batteries have a memory effect like NiCads and NiMH batteries do? Is it a good idea to give the battery a workout every month or so? The battery gives me a little under 2 3/4 hours of runtime as it is, and I want to keep it healthy for as long as possible. Any battery gurus are welcomed to chime in here. Thanks! :) -.\\-H- (and WallyNavi) -- Michelle Klein-Hass Box 2273, Van Nuys, CA 91404-2273 Spam me and you pay!
