Re: DSL and storms
My Fellow PowerBook-philes and Tim, Cable Modems would be nice if only we did not have one of the worst iterations of the Comcast Empire where I live. It was formerly known as MediaOne, then later as ATT Cable and Broadband. MediaOne has the dubioius distinction of having the poorest customer service rating of any cable company ever. Ever. It was fantastic. Man I still shudder about MediaOne. Regardless, I will be moving to Birmingham, AL which only has Charter I understand. I had to deal with them in Athens, GA. They are not as technically savvy as Comcast, nor do they know how to run networks in general, plus they do not have as many nifty features, but goodness ... it's like the difference between Sun and Microsoft in cultures. Sure, I'd prefer a Linux or Apple kind of culture, but at least it isn't an uncaring empire. On an aside: Apparently Paul Allen does have a stake in Charter. Eh. Still, business lines are expensive so I won't be able to run any nifty home-made servers from leftover computers running everything from NetBSD, OS 8.5 to RedHat 9. I plan on getting the DreamCast an Ethernet adapter and turning it into something That oughta be funny. If my Mac SE had a larger hard drive I might even network it (G) Good luck with y'alls DSL and/or Cable Modems and watch out for the lightning! :-) Sincerely, Pacer the Loon Tim Collier wrote: I live in South Florida and we have thunderstorms everyday especially in the Summer. Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architecture?!
My Fellow PowerBook-philes, In Georgia we'd revolt against such concepts. There would be lawsuits and legislation overturning such requirements. Firstly, unless it is itemized as part of the overall required tuition we'd have activists, both liberal and conservative, having a field day with the hidden and discriminatory costs of attending. Secondly, since it is a public instituion, this institution is to be held to higher standards of equality, fairness and liberty. There would be howls from, once again, both liberals and conservatives about the inability of students to choose and the violations of liberty forced upon these students and their families. The only way this would fly is if these computers were not only itemized as, specifically, a part of the actual tuittion (the required tuition to attend) AND they were subsidized. I think the citizenry of Minnesota might need to begin letting their feelings be known on the matter. I'm disapointed in Minnesota. The home of the best Public Radio programs yet they ignore some basic and fundamental freedoms of the right to make your own decisions. Still, I imagine they likely had high-speed internet for all students before the University of Georgia was able to do so. (I think we got it in ... 2000?) Universities, IT, Networks and Laptops: Was Is Apple really moving to x86 architecture?!
My Fellow PowerBook-philes and 'david', This is interesting to me. Firstly, I am curious as to how the network at your University is run. At my alma mater they had a network which consisted of multiple layers and multiple input/outputs to and from the WAN. For instance, in the dorms we had, essentially, cable modems. This was done for multiple reasons -- one, the cable wires were already dropped, and two, they could outsource the network if need be to cut overhead in times of budget crunch. This was not initially the best set up, they allowed each modem to run wideopen and had serious problems in some of the larger, high-rise Freshman dorms (800+ rom buildings) with bandwith being used up, bottlenecks and other such things. (The connection would drop every ten minutes, almost like clockwork, except during the Georgia v. Florida game weekend when everyone when down to Jacksonville.) They have since fixed these issues. While these are by no means Internet2 connections, they are more than sufficient for most, if not all, students living on campus. Next they have a layer of networks for each college and, in some cases, specific departments within a college. Sometimes a department handles the network in-house and sometimes they leave it up to UITS. This allows the networks to work well with one another while limiting the effects of a crash by one department/college. The last public network are the Information Networks available at the Library and in other computer labs as well as the WiFi network. The WiFi works like the Cable Modem -- it is limted to only allow you to see out, not inward. If you're buddy next to you is connect your can't access his computer through their WiFi, in other words. The Computer Labs are (finally!) completely locked and require your Student e-mail username/password to log in. They do use MS Windows, unfortunately, but they are locked down so no one can install anything or alter the registry. If you somehow do, then that drive is wiped and reinstalled at next login. The real piece-de-resistance is the e-mail network. While they do receive a lot of spam, they have a very effective spam blocker. Further, they do not use an exchange server (as I know one smaller college did to disastrous consequences oi vey!) but, at last look, an IMAP server that is quite flexible and fast. Anyhow, I digress. It is interesting hearing how some other Universities work. In some ways my alma mater was behidn the times (we didn't get universal high-speed internet in all our dorms until 2000) and in some ways seem to be ahead (Athens, GA has one of the wider free WiFi areas in the nation, part of this is the University's). I have friends who went to or are still at other Universities which worked differently. I had one friend at a more northern University who's network was one big LAN. That could wreak havoc, I'd imagine. Oh, and my alma mater does provide tech help, but only limited. Sometimes they'll have time to spend on an issue, sometimes they won't. So, if you break it, you fix it. :-) Faculty gets better treatment, of course. The whole laptop for everyone thing is another interesting idea to me. Honestly, I don't think laptops add much to a class if they add anything at all. I mean, sure they could be nice, but honestly it is more likely the student is playing solitaire while bored than trying to pay attention. And the good students will be just as good. This whole move to interactive classrooms is quite frankly useless in my mind. In some specialty area, I'll grant, this could be useful. For instance: Upper level math, science and CompSci classes could benefit. Maybe even some upper-level business classes. Maybe. But I do not see the humanities and arts being greatly affected. I am curious as to how some other Unviersities work. Thanks for engaging in the conversation with me. :-) BTW, I am attending another university post-grad so maybe this time August I'll have another viewpoint. I hope it isn't a doomsday one. (G) Of course, I am using an Apple so it can't be that bad. And no, I don't have to buy or rent a laptop from the school. It's a law school -- a bunch of wannabe lawyers/politicans would be too much hassle to try to force that sort of policy on. All we do is talk, talk talk ... witness this lengthy post. :-) Take care all! Sincerely, Pacer the Loon david wrote: Ignorance is such a wonderful thing. Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!
My Fellow PowerBook-philes, This is something I have been hearing a lot lately: Steve never said it would necessarily be x86 architecture! Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but it likely will be. More clues point towards this than some other, fancier architecture. For example: The PowerMac he was running the presentation on was using an Intel Pentium 4 Ghz chip. (Unless someone saw something different, the keynote was a bit grainy.) The unviersal binaries are mentioned to be able to run on PowerPC and x86 Intel architecture. The developer boxes that people have gotten have Pentiums in them. This does not mean that Apple won't be using an Apple-specific chip at some point, but it does likely mean that said chip will likely be x86 backward compatible. I feel the PowerPC was a bit more inherently stable (read some of the notes on MacSlash about bit addressing) and the Altivec instructions were likely a bit better for high-end number-crunching (I've already read multiple worries from scientists who prefer the PowerPC), but for the over-all consumer I'd say there will not be much difference. A program might crash twice a year instead of once a year, but it still won't affect the OS. Virii also will not be an issue -- unless you believe some corporate spy is very intent on using the alleged HyperThreading exploit to steal your password so they can get access to all your iPhotos. I'm a bit melancholy. I liked being different. I like the PowerPC. But it is a line not suited for Apple's plans. I am more worried about the effect on Apple the company rather than any problems with new Macs. Sincerely, Pacer the Loon I had too much caffeine to drink tonight, and now I am on a roll! Someone stop me! Bill Briggs wrote: Well, there are some clues if you read enough of the fine print. I too (as a poorly paid professor of electrical engineering in a Canadian university and an Apple shareholder) would be rather annoyed if Apple actually sold x86 Macs. But there is a more interesting possibility. Back when DEC folded the Alpha project (which was probably the best processor design around at the time), all 300 of the engineering staff from DEC went to work for Intel. They are currently working on a new chip at Intel that will, if the press is correct, be shipping sometime in 2007. It will not be an x86 family chip, and will have tossed all of the legacy support mechanisms that the x86 family carries. If it's something in the same class as the Alpha then it could really be good for the Mac. I dislike x86 architecture too (having written assembler for it I know all too well how ugly it is), but the fact is that IBM wasn't willing to invest in the future of PowerPC for Apple. I suspect that someone at IBM just pissed Steve Jobs off one too many times, and that's the end of it. I'm not selling my Apple stock. I'm still going to buy a new 15 PowerBook this year, and I'm taking a wait and see attitude concerning what's going to happen two years out. Jobs didn't do this for profit, he did it for long-term viability. If IBM had been able to provide the CPU development, he'd have stuck with the PowerPC platform. So we can all wear a black arm band for a week and then get on with work. But I'm betting that the chip you see in the Mac in 2007 is not an x86 processor, but a new one, and one developed by those 300 folks they got from DEC. - web -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!
My Fellow PowerBook-philes, Not quite the case. In order to compile a universal binary, that universal binary must have binary specific code for each architecture it will be running on. The universal binaries Jobs spoke of at the WWDC are for PowerPC and x86. They could include other architectures, such as SPARC or Itanium or some other line, but they have not. So while it might be relatively trivial to recompile code, the code would still need to be recompiled after another switch. Which means a software developer would have to re-release the product with the new Universal Binary which included the new processor. Which means we'd all have to buy that new version to have it work on all the supported architectures. No, I am fairly certain, at least for the immediate future, Apple with use x86. Sincerely, Pacer the Loon Laurent Daudelin wrote: The exact processor is pretty irrelevant. As was demonstrated at the WWDC, Mac OS X is easily portable to another processor. That doesn't mean any processor but they could recompile OS X for pretty much any compressor they like. The key is here: as long as they have a compiler that can generate executable code for that processor, we are in business! Re: Wallstreet Dual-Boot Issues ..... OS 9 not working ... sigh
My Fellow PowerBook-philes, Well, I wrassled, and then wrestled, with my PowerBook Wallstreet with the processor upgrade (466 mhz CPU, probably from NewerTech) and have come to the following conclusion: My processor upgrade is incompatible with OS 9. It does work with OS X.2, however. OSX.2 has the screen backlight going dark, though. So the thought is maybe trying to install OS X.3, but then I have an issue with no OS X.3 disks. I need to recoup all costs on this machine plus some profit to make up for some of the loss on another machine (a PowerBook Wallstreet, 1gig HD, 233mhz) which I will inevitable have. I don't see being able to do this without getting the screen problem fixed, so I will probably have to try and find some OS X.3 CDs for cheap. (I tried doing an install of OS X.4 on a Pismo, then switching the drive like I heard you could do for a Lombard, but no dice ) I sure wish I knew why my CPU won't work with OS 9, though. If anyone has had a similar experience, let me know. I am not sure if the CPU upgrade is a NewerTech one or some other company (it IS a 466mhz G3, that much I DO know). Sincerely, Pacer the Loon. I never changed the setting after I changed the hard drive. If you don't have Panther or you don't want to go through the trouble of upgrading (the upgrade requires you to use Xpostfacto 3), let the buyer put it on the machine. Take X off. The machine is upgradeable and runs X.3 competently even with only 160 MB's, which is all I have on mine. It's not blazing fast; it's useable if all the buyer wants is to do word processing, reading mail, and surfing the internet. Pismo + iSight Question....
My Fellow PowerBook-philes, Having concluded the great Get My Girlfriend a Pismo and Convert Her to Mac OS X project, and seeing her off to Italy for her summer study-abroad Pismo in hand, I have come up with a new PowerBook project. I have an iBook G4 1.2 GHz 768 RAM brand new (as of March) running Tiger and doing just fine. She has a G3 Pismo 400 running Tiger with 1 gig RAM. I am thinking of upgrading it to a G4 550. (Maybe using FastMac.) This fall I am going to law school and we shall be living further apart than we do now. On Apple's website it says iSight needs a 660mhz G4 or G3 in order to work. Does anyone have any experience running iSight on a PowerBook Pismo? What about a Pismo upgraded to the 500+ Mhz G4? Should I pony up for the PowerLogix G3 900 mhz upgrade instead, and will this enable it to work? Also -- ease of use is a big need for the GF. I've been doing voice communications over the internet since back in the mid-90s for gaming purposes, but I'd prefer not having to walk anyone else through such audio-video craziness again, much less my GF who is less tech-savvy than my gaming buds. Any ideas? Should I maybe just upgrade her machine to a new PowerBook? (It'll cost big, but ... well .. Wallstreet Dual-Boot Issues .....
My Fellow PowerBook-philes, I have a few leftover machines which I need to resale in order to recoup the costs of the infamous Get-Ye-GF-A-Mac-Laptop-Before-She-Flies-To-Italy incident. Well. One of them is real nice, an upgraded Wallstreet to 466 Mhz and with full RAM. I have Mac OS X.2.8 running on it. But the screen does this funky thing where the backlight on the LCD stops working when it boots up. To fix it, all you need to do is hit the brightness button. When it goes to sleep, however, it seems to not want to come back up. I have read on Lowendmac.com (I'll find this link later) that if you boot into OS 9, let it go to sleep, then bring it back up, boot back into OS X then it should be fixed. (At least until you let your batteries die while your Wallstreet is asleep again.) Well sounds easy to fix, yes? No. I have an OS 9.1 install disk. It is a backup copy of a broken one, so it is a CD-R. I can't install OS 9 with it. (Won't boot into OS 9.) I then tried to copy over an OS 9 folder which works booting another Wallstreet which only runs OS 9 by copying it onto a Flash Card and then back into the OS 9 folder. No dice. Won't boot. What I do is go to System Preference- Startup Disk and then choose the OS 9 partition with the OS 9 start folder. I then reboot and it reboots into a gray screen. I then have to spend the next half-hour to an hour trying to convince it to reboot into the Mac OS X.2 install CD I have and then I have to reinstall OS X. (BTW, the LCD Backlight will not work when doing this. Loads of fun.) I'd really like to resell this computer at least at the same price I bought it at, maybe more, and I think I would be able to do so if I could 1) get the backlight working and/or 2) get OS 9 to dual boot on it. I could really use the money in order to look into upgrading my GF's Pismo to use iSight (if possible) or just paying down some credit cards before I go to law school. Does anyone have ANY ideas on what I can do??? It's such a lovely machine, I hate to have to sell it ... but the money man calls. :-( Sincerely, Pacer the Loon -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Pismo Porcessor Upgrades ... G3 or G4?
My Fellow PowerBook-philes, Speaking of processor upgrades: G4 500/550 Mhz or G3 900 Mhz for my GF's PowerBook Pismo? Theoretically the G3 900 from PowerLogix will allow iSight to run, but I can't find a way to purchase it. (PowerLogix's site is not allowing me to buy from them and no one else is listing it.) FastMac seems to have a good G4 550 upgrade price which includes the shipping et al, but would it maybe be better to just get the faster G3? Anyone have any experience with this? Sincerely, Pacer the Loon Thanks for this link Laurent. One of the beauties of this list is that information that you don't know you even need comes across quite regularly -- I've been thinking of getting an iSight cam for this TiBook which has the 400 mhz processor. Looks like I'll need this. I've been thinking of looking at upgrading the processor in this 'book because otherwise it does everything I need it to do. Re: Pismo Porcessor Upgrades ... G3 or G4?
That is actually another reason why I am leaning towards FastMac. If I could find a price on a PowerLogix upgrade for the Pismo I would be more sure, but the FastMac G4 550 seems to have a higher cache size and speed. Of course, with the PowerLogix 900 I wouldn't have to purchase the iChat hack for PowerBooks under the 600 mhz mark. It always depends on what you're planning to use. If you are planning to use any application that would benefit (or even require) a G4, then the choice is obvious. Otherwise, the faster G3 will deliver more speed. Also, the processor speed itself should not always be the only factor to consider when buying a processor upgrade. The speed of the cache is also important. For instance, Sonnet offers an 1GHz G4 processor upgrade for Beige G3, BW G3 and first generation PowerMac G4. However, the system bus in this upgrade runs at 66% of the original speed of the BW and G4 bus, which is 66MHz instead of 100MHz. The bottom line is that it is not much faster than the OWC Mercury Z600 G4 500-600MHz ZIF because of this. Wireless on a Wallstreet/1400 with OS 9 problems...
Fellow PowerBook-philes, I am attempting to get an Orinoco wireless card working on one of my Wallstreets and my 1400, both of which run OS 9 and OS 8.6. The problem so far: It will not detect my Linksys access point using WPA encryption. I am wondering is this is because I am using WPA instead of WEP encryption. I can not figure out if there are WPA setting options on the card's software. Has anyone else run across this problem? Pismo and Wallstreet RAM questions...
My Fellow PowerBook-philes, I was wondering -- is the RAM on a Wallstreet compatible with the RAM on a Pismo? The reason I ask is that I have a relative abundance of Wallstreet RAM (over 1 gig, split between upper and lower) and I have a Pismo on the way that only has 192 RAM. I am tempted to just buy new RAM and max it out cheap-like, but it will set me back about $180 or so and the idea was to have a cheap Book for my GF. (Yes, I ended up getting a Pismo for her I decided I wanted to surprise her by making her games work -- plus, it will impress upon her the selection of PC software titles also available on Mac. The goal here is to win her over to Mac for life -- especially if we end up going the distance. [g]) I am already looking at eating about $100 for an airport card, so I'd rather not push the RAM up to where I could have gotten her an iBook Ice or something. Still, it would be ... ironic for her Pismo to be decked out with more RAM than my brand new 1.2ghz iBook (at 748). And if I add the 40gig HD hehe. Oh, one other thing -- how do the size profiles of the Wallstreet and Pismo compare? The Wallstreet Sonnet Processor Upgrades....
My fellow PowerBook-philes, In a fit of unbridled upgrade-frenzy I am contemplating going all out on the two Wallstreets I picked up on E-Bay recently. One alreayd has a 466 mhz G3 processor upgrade (maybe a Newer Tech version?) and the other is a 300 mhz G3. The question is: Should I upgrade the second book to a 500mhz using Sonnet? (G3 upgrade only US$199) How much better would the G4 upgrade be? My reason for asking is sheer curiousity. That and by spending the time writing this I am not looking at the Sonnet website nor on E-Bay and willfully spending money on Mac products I do not need. The one thing I wonder: Would Tiger even run on a G3 Wallstreet? Would it work better on a G4? Would any of this make a significant speed difference? From what I read, the real limitations can be found in the video processor. I have an iBook G4 1.2ghz with 768 RAM and Mac OS X and various programs run quite well. How would a G4 500mhz Wallstreet compare? Oh the curiousity. If I were a cat, I might be dead ... or stuck in some hole, in a tree, or on a roof mewing. Re: The Wallstreet Sonnet Processor Upgrades....
My Fellow PowerBook-philes, As an aside, I am looking at games for the GF to have as well. Currently she plays Age of Mythology and American McGee's Alice. Both of these have Mac versions -- the problem is both seem to have video requirements higher than what the Wallstreet can provide. Alice seems out, requiring hardware video acceleration to the tune of 128 MBs of Video RAM. Age of Mythology seems less adamant on requirements but it is still 16 MBs, and if I am not wrong the Wallstreet only carries 4MBs? (Which is mind-boggling to me, my 1998 PC from Dell came with at least 16 MBs on its video card standard wow, reminds me of 1994.) My aside: In other Wallstreet user's experiences, how well do some of the newer video-intensive games work on a Wallstreet? Do y'all think a G4 500MHz upgrade would work better? Or even show a difference? Now I am wondering if even some of the Myst games might work Sincerely, Pacer the Despondent -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Will this HD work on a Wallstreet?
Fellow PowerBook-philes, I was wondering if y'all thought this hard drive would work on a PowerBook Wallstreet -- or if anyone had any experiences with this particular drive. (https://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=101223) It is ATA 5, not ATA 6. It seems to have decent power and sound profiles. It seems to fit into the case. It seems to be that this will work. But what something seems does not mean that something truly is. Ugh. Verbs. So what do you think? Which Mac OS X/Virtual PC version for my Wallstreet?
Fellow PowerBook-philes, I am in the process of building a cheap laptop for my GF so that she will have a machine while she studies abroad in Rome, Italy this summer. Consequently I am putting together a PowerBook Wallstreet from various parts and machines I've found for cheap. This will either be a 300mhz G3 or 466mhz G3 with 512 MB RAM and a 40 gb drive. Wanting to endear my GF to Macintoshes I was looking to put OS X on the machine. The problem -- I am not sure which OS X should go. As I understand it, OS X.2.8 is supported without the requirement of any other programs for loading it (such as XPostFacto) on the Wallstreet. However, as I also understand it, Mac OS X.3 had a significant spead increase over X.2 because of code optimization. Further, I understand X.3 is the best Mac OS X for laptops. The problem is that OS X.3 is not supported natively on the Wallstreet and I would need XPostFacto to get it to work. Further, XPostFacto's website lists problems with the video when installing OS X.3 on a Wallstreet. Does anyone have any experience on this matter? In other words: Which Mac OS X version is the fastest/most stable on the PowerBook Wallstreet? Lastly, my girlfriend is a Classics Major and uses a program written for DOS which helps her study (a sort-of Dictionary like program). I would like her to be able to access this program while abroad and therefore was looking to get one of the Virtual PC versions. As I would like to be running Mac OS X, and as this is only a DOS program, I am wondering if it would be best to get the lowest Virtual PC version I can find (4, 5 or 6?) which will run on OS X? I have unused copies of Windows 98 and of Dos 5 6, but which Virtual PC would have a decent ease of use and decent speed for a Mac OS X computer like the Wallstreet? Would Virtual PC 4 or 5 work? What about Virtual PC 6? Any comments or ideas on this? Sincerely, Pacer -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: How do you create a guest account?
Zoltan, I had the same issue you describe here and tried the solutions or queries suggested in this thread but to no avail. I then tried to create a Guest account. I made the name Guest (case-sensitive). I made the simple name Guest (case-sensitive). I then made the password guest (case-sensitive). This worked for me, it might work for you. Keep in mind that you need to supply a password or the system will supply one for you. I used the password as the password hint to simplify the guest sign-on. Also, you will still need to modify and restrict the permissions. I only set it up to use a few games (Chess, Marble Blast) plus FireFox, AppleWorks and TextEdit. Hope this helps. Let me know if it does. I only have one system right now to test on. Cheers, Pacer P.S. I quoted the whole letter because I address the whole letter. Re: How do you create a guest account?
Chad Swarthout wrote: I don't know why you would want to. You should NEVER create accounts that can be accessed without a password, as they are a vulnerability. Plus, with a unix-based operating system, it wouldn't surprise me if this is prohibited for exactly that reason. Mr. Swarthout, Every use has a different paradigm of use. For that reason, every user's security methodology is and should be different. In my case, I have an Apple iBook. This is a machine I do not let out of my site. At the same time there are moments I would like to allow my friends to quickly access the machine on an account other than my own. This will allow them to access certain functionality while at the same time prevent them from easily accessing secure files and settings. Knowing my friends I am aware of their computer capabilities. Further, being in the general proximity of the use, if they are spending the significant amount of time and effort to break through OS X's security then I will be close enough to most likely catch a glimpse of their activities and put an end to it. Now, having said this, someone using a desktop system which remains in a static location of any sort of public setting would be someone to which I would not recommend a Guest account. In the end, in such a situation you never know who might gain access to your device and how much time they might have to be able to break through any security measures in place. So, different users in different circumstances should and can use different security methodology. The important thing is to understand your security risks, your security settings, and how they affect one another. On a side-note, Apple must believe this is not as important -- at least on my iBook. It was set initially to boot directly into my account with no logon or password requirements. So, hope that clarifies why some of us are crazy enough to put a guest account on our computers. :-) Besides, what's life without a bit of danger?
