One thing that you can do, which I did, is get a second router, there
are some inexpensive ones that you might find on ebay or at one of
the usual places. You set up that router as an AP, access point, at
another location in your apartment. This will extend your signal. You
do have to connect it via ethernet cable to your router My apartment,
a duplex with 6" thick concrete floors and ceilings and cinderblock
walls, didn't interfere with my Belkin Pre N router until a next-door
neighbor installed the same router. I could not get a signal anymore
in certain parts of the house, but his came through strong enough for
me to accidentally lock on. He had no security and a slow cable
service. Fortunately I still had my older Belkin 54g. Creating an AP
on that solved the problem. I also got him to secure his network.

Hi Tom,
Yes both networks have Belkin in the beginning of the name. You're

You need t o set the wireless to join a specific network (the one
that you set as yours ) I am betting that you have your wireless
set to just join automatically to the network so that you do not
need to log on all the time. You can still do this but to a
specific network only.

Thank you Victoria, I do have it set up to join a specific network
and not to join automatically. That's what has been frustrating. The
neighbor's network router settings get imbedded anyway. I was looking
for a way to actually block it from incoming. The funny thing is that
his signal is weaker than mine due to the relative distances... but
this has not been a help to me.

Rename your SSID.. your mention that "my neighbor has the same
brand as me" is the clue here. Look in the manual for your base
station, and find how to rename it and the SSID that it broadcasts
to clients. More than likely, you both have the same SSID and your
powerbook is trying to connect to it's usual one, it's just finding
his by mistake.

Thanks Bruce, I will do that change too.

unwanted network

2005-11-24 Thread dan_A

Hi List-

I need some network help. I have a 12" PB using Airport Extreme
joining my wireless network at home. I've had no network problems for
the last couple of years until a few weeks ago, when a new neighbor
moved in next door. I didn't realize that they set up a wireless
network and happen to have the same brand of router as I do. I was
unaware of this until one day after turning my PB on to download some
items, I noticed that the download seemed much too slow. I checked
various things and found that I had logged on to my neighbor's
unprotected network. I checked the up and download speed and
realized that he was using a cable system that I had recently
abandoned because of its slowness. I had switched to DSL. I now had a
hard time making changes to my airport settings because his router
info was imbedded in the control panel. I got around it by connecting
via ethernet and then switching over to wireless. On another occasion
he happened to shut down and I was able to get on to my network. But
I can't seem to hold my settings unless I don't shut down. What I
want to do short of telling him to protect his network (I don't know
him yet) is to some how prevent it from being picked up or being
accepted by my PB. Sorry for the length of this. Can anyone tell me
how to prevent picking that network up?

hardware methods. I have to force a shutdown and then do a cold reboot.

I read Luis' post on getting his Superdrive to work again via the
Terminal by using cmd-opt-o-f and then typing eject cd reset-nvram
reset-all. Leaving out eject cd command line, would the rest of the
commands possibly clear the problem or is the solution more likely by
removing the keyboard and hitting the reset the pmu button? TIA.

I need a Ti book to Cinema Display ADC adapter...

2005-07-29 Thread dan_A

Hi all-

I just bought a used 22" Apple Cinema Display ADC that I would like
to connect to my 15" 800MHz Powerbook G4 DVI. The male connector on
the monitor has a pin configuration that looks like it would fit
perfectly into the female DVI port on the Ti book. They don't fit
because the shape of the metal on the monitor's plug, a flattened
oval and the books port, a flattened rectangle cant fit into each
other. I tried finding an adapter on both the Apple site and a Belkin
site but I cant get enough info that would indicate a fit.
Does anyone have such a connection and can you tell me what part
would work. Thanks for your time and help.

Can't restart

2005-07-05 Thread dan_A

Hi All-

I have a Alum-book 12"/865MHz running 10.4.1
This afternoon, after using it for an hour or so I shut it down and
when I turned it back on it wouldn't start up. Black screen. I tried
several times with same result, doing a forced restart each time...
because I couldn't get a bong using startup button. I inserted
DiskWarrior CD and got a start up and went all the way to the select
drive for repair window. When I selected the main drive I got a black
rectangle over the DW window which said, in several languages, that I
have to restart my computer. I hit the restart button and nothing.
Did a forced restart and got a white screen with text telling me to
restart via "mac-reboot" or use a close down command. I did a reboot
and got an error message, which I stupidly didn't take the time to
record, and which basically said the an enabler could not be found.
My first guess is that I have corrupt PRAM or NVRAM. I tried to reset
the PRAM but I'm not sure that the key set is the same as on some
other machines... Option/Command/P/R. Didn't get any additional
bongs. Tried Control/Command/P/R. No good.

I tried DW again and got it going to repair main drive directory but
a DW message appeared as it was searching for directory info,
forever, which said: running slow because of low memory??? I have 384
megs of RAM, not a lot, but what should be enough. I'm going to check
the memory stick to see if became unseated but it doesn't seem likely
since I've been running well for some time and never dropped or
jarred the machine.

I would appreciate help on what you think might be happening and if
this machine has a key sequence for resetting the PRAM or if that
might even sound like the problem.

Corrupt NVRAM?

2005-06-13 Thread dan_A

Hi Listas

I have Ti-Book 800MHz with 1gig of RAM, and a 155 GB firewire hd
attached. I'm running 10.4.1. I've been using this machine as a
desktop unit, always on and plugged in. I probably killed the battery
that way but ever since I installed Tiger, I can't restart or shut
down without forcing those functions. I unplugged the charger to see
how long the battery would go for... the battery shows 98% to 100%
charge all the time... but when I unplug the charger I get about 7
minutes of battery time and then it reads 0. I'm wondering if these 2
symptoms indicate corrupted NVRAM. The fact that it no longer
completes a shutdown is what makes me think so. The battery may still
have some ability to recharge if I reset the PMU. Anyone have any
thoughts on this? Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi- sorry I didn't get to see your email till now. When it says do
not disconnect it's charging its battery or loading files. When it
updated, it was updating the ipod software. The 2 things that will
happen is it should or should have asked you if you wanted to
transfer the music in iTunes to the iPod erasing anything that was
already installed on it. If the battery needs to be recharged it
would also do that. How long has it been charging? That can take some
time and it's normal. Did it copy any files. You can see that
happening in iTunes up where it shows what music is being played. Let
me know what's happening... and congrats... you'll like it.

Can I install Tiger via firewire Tibook to Alum book?

2005-06-06 Thread dan_A

Hi listers...

I have a Tibook with a functioning SuperDrive and a 12" Alumbook with
a broken combo drive. I would like to install Tiger into the 12"
book. Can I mount the 12" onto the desktop of the Tibook via a FW
cable and have the ability to install using the Tibook's superdrive,
onto the 12"s mounted drive? Or is there another way that I'm just
not seeing. I have the books networked via a wireless router. Can it
be done via the network? Thanks for your help.

Hi Kristina,\
Now that I know what you are using I opened 9.1 in one of my computers
to remember and check the settings. To make Netscape open when you
click the links in your emai, do the following: Go to the apple menu
and open *control panels* and navigate down to *Internet* control
panel and open. Scroll across to the *Web* tab and open. Look down at
the bottom of the panel and you'll see *Default Web Browser*... change
the setting to Netscape. Just scroll down till you see it. While you
have that panel open you can make sure some of your other settings are
correct. Open up the *E-mail* tab. Make sure that your account
settings are correct, ie: user id, incoming and outgoing mail servers
and password. At the bottom of that panel you can select the email
application that you want to use. Close the panel and choose to save
the changes.

free but only works with OSX.

The control panel changes should fix the above.

Open Netscape. I don't know what version you have... I only have
"Netscape Communicator 4.8" which I don't use anymore. Find Netscape
*preferences*, mine are under the *Edit" menu. When you get the prefs
open you should see a whole list of things. Find *Identity* and make
sure the setting are correct. You don't have to fill in all the stuff
in that panel. Just make sure that your name or nickname and email
address is correct. Then find *Mail Servers* this is the important
panel. Make sure that the *Outgoing mail (SMTP) server* has the
correct info... the same that you set up in your Internet control
panel in system control panels. And at the top of that same panel make
sure that *incoming mail server* is correctly set. This should enable
your sending emails from your Netscape App. Hope that this helps.

Hi Vicki-
I don't have an ABS but I think that they come in 2 types; one with a
built in router and one without. If you have the one without, it should
just be a switch and maybe we can figure it out. If it is the router
variety, I think that would be your problem. You would have to
substitute a hub. Each router supplying its own address might be your
problem.

I'm not sure what you have. Is your netgear a switch or a router? Is it
a wireless router? If they are both routers then you might be having
trouble with conflicts. If one of them is a wireless router then use
that and if you need more cable connections add a 4 (or more) port
switch or hub (same thing). I don't know if this helps. I have a cable
modem and use a Belkin wireless router for connecting 2 wireless pb's,
2 cabled desktop towers, another pb via cable and a laser printer. All
can go on line from one IP via the router. The Belkin works fine with
both the Airport and Airport Extreme cards.

There is a different solution. If you sign up for a free efax account
which gives you a fax number out of your area code (to induce you to
buy an 800 number or one in your area code) You can give people this
fax number as a temp or permanent number to use. Anyone who sends a
fax to this number with a conventional fax machine will be effectively
sending you an email with a fax attachment which you can acccess while
you're online. I think that the link is: <http://efax.com>

Touchup paint for the Ti-book

Hi list-
I was wondering if anyone has experience using the touch up paint for
the Ti-book chipping syndrome. I just purchased the paint and before I
use it I would like to make sure that it is done as well as it can be.
The chipping on the front top edge of the machine has a rough,
blistered surface. Has anyone tried sanding it down (lightly with a
very fine grit) being careful of course, not to get dust between the
keys? And is the paint any good? I already made the purchase but I
guess that one of my daughters could paint her toe nails with it.

A completely different iPod question (OT)

Hi list-
I have a 12" Al-book on which I have an extensive iTunes library. I
just purchased a used iPod which may come with some music that I want
to get rid of. In fact, I would like to set the iPod to its original
settings, clean of all personalization, as it comes from the store. Is
there an easy way to return it to this state? If I do this will it want
to be registered, which I'd have no problems doing, or is that not
something to do. Does anyone have any source of info on setting up a
"used" iPod? I wouldn't think that Apple has this info but I might be
wrong.

Thanks in advance for any help.

unique solution and supremely effective. The latest version, 3.02 is
the only one that works with OS 10.3.5. The previous versions came with
a separate disk defragger... unfortunately they no longer make it

Hi,
Try booting, holding the option key down. This should give you a "bent
arrow" and a "straight arrow" pointing to the right. Click on the
straight arrow until you see the internal drive icon. Then click on
that. An alternative way is hit your start button and hold down the

force the computer to utilize the "next" drive instead of the CD. I

Personally, I miss the "meta" key. Like command, option, shift, and

Now where's the Any key?
I've been using the Mac since the Classic and SE/30 days, the eighties,

airport extreme card incompatability?

2004-09-22 Thread dan_A
Hi list-
I've been successfully running a 15.5" Ti book with an Airport card and
a Netgear wireless router for the base station. When I first got the
book I was able to link up to the network without a problem. I just
recently added a `12" Al book with an Airport Extreme card. The card
sees the network without a problem but I can not connect to any of the
machines on my network nor can I go online. I've tried everything I
know (which obviously is not enough) to make the connection but I can't
get it to work. I tried to use the Airport Setup Assistant and that's
where I think the problem is. The utility seems not to be able to work
with the router. So, I just want to get some info on this to be sure if
it's incompatability before I spring for an Airport base station-- and
if I do, and my wife doesn't kill me, can I get away with the older
base station- not the extreme? The Extreme card should be backwards
compatable, I hope. %$#$#@@!

Keyboard usage question

2004-06-28 Thread dan_A
Hi list-
My question may seem to be a little "specialized" and a non tech
problem. Below is a brief background, but the question that is below
the background should be in the area of general experience... regarding
the use of a USB keyboard to solve my problem. Thanks for your patience
and help.

I have a 15" 800 MHz Ti-book in which I'm trying to create a dictionary
for Sanskrit/English. I'm using File Maker Pro 7 and a Sanskrit font
which works pretty well. Since Sanskrit has about twice as many letters
than English, I use alternate key strokes with the Keyboard Viewer and
the correct keyboard set up.

My question is about the use of the imbedded number pad. I can't get
it to work. Does anyone have experience using the number pad? If there
are limitations with it, does anyone know if a USB extended keyboard
will allow full accessibility to all the alternate characters assigned
to the keys?

Help, a CD was swallowed

2004-05-15 Thread dan_A
Hi List-
Yesterday I inserted a CD into the slot of my 15" Ti-book. It didn't go
in too smoothly and now wont come out. I don't see a mechanical
ejection hole or lever. I'm not familiar with slot loaders that much
except for an iMac that I had. That had the hole and another mechanical
device on the left and inside the slot.

I hope I don't have to take things apart to get the CD out. I tried the
eject button and holding the mouse button down. It starts to come out
and then clicks for a while then spins up again showing back up on the
desktop.

Any one have a solution besides using a band saw? Thanks for your help.

cable outputs as well. My network consists of the Tbook with an airport
card, 4 macs and a hp laser printer... everything is accessible to
everything else. I'm running 10.3.3 on the Tbook, 10.2.8, 9.2.2 and
7.5.(on a SE/30) on the other macs and can print to the laser printer
from all and mount any drive. I also have a Netgear 4 port hub stuck
in-between somewhere for the additional ports.

I have an Airport card in my G4 Tbook which goes for about $90-$100 and
works beautifully with a $25 (after rebate) Netgear 4 port wireless
router instead of the ($300?) Airport base transmitter. That's one
alternative for you.

Guys- thanks so very much for your time and information. I am set to go now and glad

Thanks for the fast reply Laurent, it answered most of my questions. Do you know if
this P"B boots in 9.2.2?

New PB user questions

2004-02-24 Thread dan_A
Hi Listers-

I'm a new to owning a Powerbook and have some questions.

I recently bought a used 15", G4, 800 MHz Powerbook which has Panther installed. The
seller gave me the set of system discs that came with the machine, 10.1, without the
Panther upgrade discs and without documentation. The owner also had no need for OS 9
so there is no classic installed. Owning a lot of older Macs with different
requiremets for installing OS 10, I need some help on the following, and anything
else that I might be over-looking from lack of experience--

I also purchased a used, full install set of Panther discs (without printed
documentation).

Would this software have the Powerbook CP's or any components that might exist for the
Powerbook? I didn't see Powerbook specific Panther installation discs at Apple.

Is it necessary to partition the 60 GB drive when I install drivers for 9.2.2-to
create a separate partition for each OS and relating to this question, does this
machine boot in 9.2.2?

The machine is beautiful and runs very fast in Panther--I am overwhelmed by it. It
also seems to get very hot on the bottom--Is this normal and OK?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Dear dan_A,

Just thought I'd share with you what somebody pointed out to me once: the
only "stupid question" is the
one you don't ask. Don't feel bad - nobody, at least on earth, knows
everything there is to know and
everybody needs to ask somebody else something sometime (and I speak from
experience!). I guess
that's what this list is all about.

You're right-Thank you

Hi-
Thanks for the reply. So, the extra cord is merely an extension, as I thought, and to
charge the battery or use AC, I only need the power adapter cord. (unless I am too far
from the outlet)

Thanks again.

A real Stupid Question

2004-02-13 Thread dan_A
Hi Listers-

I'm new to this list because I just received my purchase of a used (and my first)
G4/800 MHz Titanium 15" power book. The seller didn't send me the manual, but I was
able to download the Acrobat file from Apple. I guess that my question is so basic
that the manual doesn't answer it. I put the power cord and the "adapter" cords
together to charge the battery. My question is: For what purpose is the adapter cord
used by itself, without the line cord? and, can the battery be charged without the
line cord? Seems like it should and that the line cord is just more length? I know
this is on the side of stupid, but I would like to know why the two are supplied
instead of one. Thanks in advance.
