I'll second that. At times it's really 'employment insurance" for 
wanabe Flash designers, and a way of getting someone to pay for their 
education. The tech who suggested I toss my laptop also said it didn't 
matter if only a handful of Windows users could print the all Flash 
website pages... "we aren't a reference library" and "we don't need Mac 
using customers"

I had a similar thing hapen last year with OS 10.3.9 eventually I 
had to reinstall the entire operating system... never found out what 
caused it... happened on the internal drive AND an external firewire 
drive 4 times over a two week span!
Our best guess is that one of the cats torqued the case while it was 
running (12 lbs of cat on a 17" case supported by the pins of a 12" 
laptop stand) and caused a motherboard problem that resulted in system 
level data damage... was visible in a DiskWarrior graph and always in 
approximately the same places.

You should be able to formate them for the Mac using ZipTools. Unless 
they were Mac formated at the factory, they usually come in DOS or a 
cross platform DOS/UNIX format that's readable by pre-OS X Macs and 
PCs... you can read/write to that formate but not run first aid/disk 
recovery programs on those disks.
You usually need to find a Windows machine to formate (deeper than 
initialize) the Zip disks in DOS.

B of A did this for a very long time... they finally started using 
something else.
I really get irritated at techs who think we are a tiny, irrelevant 
minority... one recently told me that when I couldn't connect to their 
network... because of his non-standard Windows setup... actually told

I am considering not moving to Google... I'm starting to resist this

Yes and no... there have been several articles over the years about how 
much you can tell from things like the checks people write, the movies 
they rent or the things they have in their trash...


it's the reason the feds are doing data sweeps in as many places as 
possible...


one article outlined besides an accurate income level and that they 
were living beyond it... the age of the parents, the number and age of 
their kids, the type of pets and that someone in the house had a 
drinking problem... just from a years worth of canceled checks you 
can imagine what a collection of bookmarks says about you...

Not all that long ago, I was working at a distributor and we received 
pretty much the same request -- could we come up with a solution to 
add SCSI capability to a (then) new PowerBook G4.


exactly why I bought a used G3 Mini-tower... it has a built-in ZIP and 
I added an OrangeMicro USB/Firewire card. I have the HD partitioned 
into 3 sections... an 8 gig for OSX and the rest divided in half with 
OS9.2 and OS8.5 for my older stuff.
I boot off 9.2 for the Agfa scanner, jutebox DAT, 200 Syquest, and 
external CD burner (it can't find the built in ATA CD in OS9) then 
reboot in 10 to connect to the network... time consuming but stable.

Looking on my Big Al with OS 10.3.9 System Prefs: Keyboard & Mouse 
has only a checkbox to illuminate in lowlight conditions (by it's 
sensor) and a period of time that it turns off automatically... which I

As I use it a lot from a rolling table over the bed (which keeps the 
keyboard at mid-chest level) the backlight is not always helpful. 
Sometimes tilting the display down slightly helps...


On a related note... keeping things out from under the keys is a 
problem... my helper cats tracked "unmentionable crumbs" under the keys 
causing a couple to stick until the offending stuff compressed enough 
to be vacuumed out... that's when I learned, contrary to Apples tech 
notes, you can't take this keyboard out like all the others  : (

 It seems that Quicktime 7.0.4 crashes Diskwarrior 3.0.3 (Rev 39) at  
the end of the rebuild directory command. Fortunately, the repair goes  
through and Alsoft has stated that "the crash will do no harm to your  
data."
If you are getting this crash, your options are: - Downgrade to  
Quicktime 7.0.3 via this link:  
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ 
quicktime701reinstallerforquicktime704.html - Boot from the DiskWarrior  
CD and run repairs from CD. - Rename DiskWarrior  
3.0.3.app/Contents/Resources/Complete.aiff to Alert Complete.aiff (Not  
recommended).

Hopefully, Apple/Alsoft can get this issue fixed properly.

 The first time I encountered the Apple recommendation to power the 
external AC adapter first before connecting to the Apple laptop was in 
the Apple-supplied PowerBook certification training materials prior to 
my Prometric certification exam. The topic was addressed in one of the 
test questions, so I assumed it was an important issue.
The training materials suggested that the main problem was the onboard 
power management unit (PMU) which might eventually get "corrupted" to 
the point of no longer correctly managing the recharging of the main 
battery (leading to a main battery that "runs flat"). Leaving the power 
adapter connected, but removed from the wall socket, was supposed to 
lead to PMU confusion as to whether it should keep attempting to charge 
or not. Using the PMU reset procedure contained in the appropriate 
service manual was supposed to "fix" the situation. The reset procedure 
for all Apple laptops is now covered in Apple Support documents 14449 
and 58416.
The suggestion about allowing the power adapter to "settle down" before 
connecting also makes sense...

 I have read with interest the exchanges regarding plugging a laptop's 
AC adapter to the wall outlet first, then connecting it to the laptop. 
I think I'm satisfied that this is the right way to go; now for the 
next logical question:
What about when it's time to turn the laptop off or to begin using 
battery power? Should you disconnect the AC from the laptop first and 
then the outlet, or from the outlet first and then the laptop?

This is no joke... I found out the hard way.

By all means make a point of plugging the power adapter into the Mac 
after the power is live and unplugging the Mac first before turning the 
power off to the adapter... failure to do so can damage the Mac's power 
manager.


If your book fails to recharge or recognize the adapter, it may require 
resetting the power manager.

Sounds like a variation of a common problem...
open the HotSync Manager, turn off the Sync, reset the connection drop 
down, and then turn syncing back on


if that doesn't work reboot after refreshing the connection... it 
should turn syncing back on by itself. If you have several connection 
types in the drop down, try changing the type.

It says Hot Sync manager  is not installed when I can clearly see it  
in the

folder.

Palm's web page doesn't work for me under OE 5.1.7 nor the freshly  
installed

Netscape 7.02.

In OE the web hotspots move in Netscape only the menu shows up.

My Lombard is at Wegener's for the 3rd week...I miss it and all its  
files.

Thanks for all the great info... looks like I'll try Missing Sync 
too... I moved my huge Palm database (goes back to 1994) into 
iCal/address book last fall and had some interesting problems. But the 
Palm had already screwed up some of the data on it's own... multiple 
duplicate records, repeating entries that ended in 2000 re-opening in 
2005... or moving completely, note fields in addresses breaking up and

In my experience the older Mac DVD burners are very picky about the 
media... Sony DVD-Rs seem to be the most reliable...

Is this the Dual USB  model? It has a problem interfacing with the 
power adapter... it was an Apple recall issue motherboard/connector 
issue.

In a related question... I've used Windows emulation software from way 
back... RealPC and SoftWindows, VirtualPC but ran into serious 
issues with VirtualPC 5 and Windows200 Pro on Big Al 
SoftPC/WindowsXP on my 7500 worked better and faster.. it was so bad it 
couldn't even authenticate itself over the DSL.

After the Palm problems I moved what I could to the Calendar and 
Address book so I could at least access the info on the iPod... wish it 
had a direct input capability... but then it would be a Palm with mp3 
capability : )

No luck so far... Accounts hangs on opening in infinite cursor 
spinning, and Preferential Treatment hangs (no dialog box, shows icon 
in the doc but says it's not responding)... unless someone has another 
idea, the next step is a limited Archive Re-instal... : (

If A&R didn't fix it, this is absolutely a user-level issue.

Create a new user and log in as that user, If the problems in the 
Apple programs go away it's GOT to be something in your user 
directory, probably corrupted prefs.

That's what I eventually did with the internal drive... I've been  
holding on to the firewire in hope that someone else somewhere had a  
solution... : (


For those who wonder why I get stubborn about these things and don't  
just wipe it the first time, like all the PC techs I know... way back  
in the 80's when I started using Macs, I discovered that unlike  
DOS/Windows, with their nonsensical file systems, the Mac system was  
laid out in an organized fashion... and you if you learned how it  
worked, you could fix most things yourself... you could move your  
system intact from one machine to another in less time than it took to  
reinstall everything and you could usually find/replace the offending  
files without trashing the whole thing but now that we are on a  
hybrid UNIX system with multiple anti-file-copy prevention schemes...  
doing even simple diagnostics is a pain!

please forgive me for giving advice.
Thanks Peter... I do know most of these things... over the years I 
found that holding devices in a static, cramped position (not to many 
options with a mouse) aggravated the problem. With a big trackball I 
could actually exercise my hand while working and the arm movements 
were in a smaller circle.

This is precisely what Archive and Re-installs fix.

Boot from the 10.3 CD, and install OS X , you will be given the option 
of doingan Archive & Reinstall, keeping your user data. Do that.


The immediately run all the updates, and you should be up and running.

OK... here's one for you. Any ideas before I toss the backed up system 
files as useless?


Back in August I had a weird system level problem that ended in 
reformatting the internal drive on the Big Al powerbook... short 
version is 12 lbs of cat tweaking the case caused system file damage on 
the internal HD and one external Firewire.


I lost a lot of settings on that system and they were backed up 
(duplicate boot drive) to an external Firewire. The same error affected 
the Firewire at one point and that system is still damaged. Wanted to 
pick your brains on ways to restore it without loosing everything 
that's installed in the system like Lightwave, CAD aps, etc. that I 
was hoping to avoid three days of reinstallation on.


Symptoms when booting from this system (10.3.8): all Apple aps freeze 
or malfunction when an operation requires some kind of system query... 
Mail hangs on opening, Safari opens but can't find a web page, 
calculator freezes on calculation, system update works until it gets a 
list of files to update... then freezes when you try to uncheck a 
selection or when it starts downloading update files, installer opens 
to an empty window... all these include a spinning cursor and Forced 
Quit says "ap not responding." Actually gave it 24hrs once to see if it 
would eventually clear but never did. Successive Forced Quits result in 
accumulation errors until none of the Apple aps work at all...


third party aps are not affected unless they make a call on some Apple 
related function... example, I can connect to the web with Explorer but 
not Safari.


What does NOT work... any type of partial reinstall of the system.. 
some functions are fixed but not all. Mail is never fixed this way.

And one other small problem is that I would really like to keep some

lost data. I don't entirely trust flash drives, at least not for data 
I can't replace.


Throw in a Palm device and things get even more complicated. Palms 
synchronize using a special iSync conduit that writes calendar events 
to iCal and addresses to Address on the Mac, but puts the palm notes 
in the Palm desktop application, which is necessary for synching even 
when you're using iCal for your calendar. Palm suggests users only 
synchronize with one Mac. I can't imagine what can happen when a Palm 
files gets changed, the Palm gets synchronized to Mac A, Mac A gets 
synchronized to DotMac on the Mac server. Mac B then gets synchronized 
via DotMac with the Mac server and the Palm device gets hooked up to 
Mac B. Oh, and I think only later versions of Tiger will do the Palm 
dance. I don't think Panther's iSync can do Palms.


The head spins with the possibilities.

My final solution is to have my Palm only talk to the laptop, and to 
do my e-mail and accounting only on the laptop. Then I sync the laptop 
with DotMac. My desktop Mac just reads the files on DotMac and I avoid 
making changes there. It's not an elegant system.


If a list member out there has a cleaner application to do this sort 
of thing I hope the solution gets posted.

Sorry guys... Had no idea I was starting a war...  : (

A few clarifications are in order:
1) I don't 'hate' Steve Jobs... much like this country... it ain't 
perfect but it's the best game in town.  I've spent 20 years defending 
the Mac and intend to keep doing so... even when it means defending it 
from Jobs and/or Apple.


2) GUI stands for Graphical User Interface... what you see and interact 
with on the screen...
A mouse is one of many possible external input devices. A GUI does not 
NEED a mouse.
Personally I prefer a trackball and a pressure sensitive pen... mice 
causing aggravating repetitive strain problems. I can and have done 
Photoshop retouching on BART with a trackpad but don't recommend it!
Keyboarding certain types of input is definitely faster than a mouse, 
but far more hazardous to the health of human wrists and arms. For me, 
the speed difference isn't worth the potential loss of the use of my 
hands.


3) The Finder has two very useful ways of viewing information... icons 
and text... used together or separately, that can be toggled to fit 
your current needs. My complaint was that the early plans for the OSX 
interface included removal of or limiting the use of iconic views. I 
have no complaint about the usefulness of command line functioning... I 
DO have a strong objection to being limited to it.


And my partner who is severely dyslexic, is the only adult I know (the 
others have been under 10yrs old) who can consistently lock up my 
Mac he's a wiz at AutoCAD on the PC.

I can second that statement that man is mostly a visual critter. We 
tend to forget that the GUI was designed after people at Xerox PARC 
studied the way young children learn. Having taught high school for 
30+ years, I can tell you that the vast majority of my students (and 
my colleagues) would never look twice at a computer, much less use 
one, if it were still a command line device.

Sometimes it looks like the focus is more on what he personally wants 
than what we... the users... need or want.


Take the near demise of the Desktop metaphor Finder (specifically as 
iconic/object representations) in the first round of OSX... I for one 
spent 5 years in a firm moving people from command line interfaces to 
GUIs... not because it made money, but because our brains process 
massive amounts of information faster visually and we see patterns in 
that information easier visually... comes with being human. Returning 
to list mode as a primary interface experience is only "better" for a 
small section of the population Motif and NextStep were very well 
done GUIs, so that's not where it came from.


If you look at his history... Steve gets off into his own trips 
occasionally - like any high energy, creative genius - and they aren't 
all good for Apple or users. Thankfully those around him have 
maintained a balance... but as the stakes get larger, so do the chances 
for really big mistakes

Sounds like they rushed it out for the show... not uncommon... but 
disheartening.


Your other point is one I've made to critical PC users on many 
occasions... the Dell/Windoz machines are meant to be the old 
"salesman's version" of the Chevy/Ford... if I only wanted cheap 
transportation I'd buy a Hugo... well, maybe not.


Apple has a hard road to walk... getting people past the old wives 
tales.. but I often fear Job's erratic personal agenda will deprive us 
of the platform we've come to depend on over the years (20 of them in 
my case).

Just heard from a trusted friend that this years show is very 
disappointing over all... only half the usual size... and missing major 
vendors like Wacom and the DevDepot truck sale.


I was planning to drive up (2.5 hrs one way) in hopes of getting a 
bigger HD for my powerbook and some good software deals...


any one who's been there want to comment?

 it's sad to hear Apple is suffering from the "hire cheap help" 
syndrome that's been afflicting tech support for so long...


seems it's hard for middle managers to get the point that although it 
may reduce costs locally for a time, every negative experience 
customers have reduces the overall confidence in the product, and 
impacts future sales.

Hi Tim,

It appears that the customer care agent was quite far off base.   
Since my message to the list,  I was able to go up the line a little 
and talk to somebody who could actually do something.   As a result,  
when I took my PB into the service center,  he did a quick once over 
(just asking for very basic info) and told me that a full inspection 
was not going to be required and that the parts were being ordered 
immediately.   He also told me that they usually hold onto computers 
until the parts come in but that Applecare had told him to let me 
leave with the PB and return when they call to indicate the parts are 
in, for installation.


Soit appears going up the chain of command does help.  However, it 
is a rather sad state of affairs when Applecare Customer service does 
not understand their own policies and coverage and furthermore, that 
they don't realize a keyboard and latch are considered hardware !!


Anyway,  just waiting for the parts now.

Thanks to everybody here for their information, advice and support 
with this frustrating incident.

Any one have an idea of what software is not working with 10.4?
Beyond having learned long ago not to be an 'early adopter,'  as a 
freelancer the cost of all the necessary upgrades is always a deciding 
factor.


I shutter to think how much money I've spent on upgrades since my first 
Mac (a $5,000 12 mhrz Mac II with 1 meg of RAM and a 10 meg HD)... 
we've come a LONG way! Today, my cell phone has more power.

For some very weird reason the link of the beta version has no check 
boxes and clicking it takes me to the page that doesn't have the Mac 
download... my partner is downloading it with his PC for me... it shows

OK... now I feel dumb... they have  this on the download page:

Something you should know about Google Earth (beta)...
Google Earth is a broadband, 3D application that not all computers can 
run.
	• 	Apple Macintosh computers are not supported at this time (but we 
are working on it).
	• 	Windows-based desktop PCs older than 4 years  old may not be able 
to run it.
	• 	Windows-based notebook PCs older than 2 years old may not be able 
to run it.


and all the download links are .exe files that Safari can't open... 
what am I missing?

Sandra,

You should have absolutely no problem running it on your 1 Gig G4 PB.  
I have been running it on my 1.25 PB with only 512 MB RAM and it's 
pretty smooth.   An amazing application !!!


I have the beta version which was pulled from MacUpdate amongst other 
sites but is still fairly widely available.   I will place a copy in 
my public folder later today for you to access.


In the meantime,  in consideration for G-Book list members who have 
absolutely no interest in this program and the list as a whole,   I am 
requesting that any requests or offers of the Google Earth application 
file BE KEPT OFF-LIST.   Please contact each other individually via

private e-mail as opposed to replying to the list.

Having had a serious problem with the powerbook  with a RoadTools Pivot 
stand (10lb cats tweaking the case by sitting on it) ... I got a metal 
bakers rack to distribute the weight and still allow air circulation... 
put a small section of non-slip shelf material on it as a cushion and 
stabilizer works great
