Re: $50 iBooks @ UVA

2005-08-17 Thread Dan K
I think flogging off surplus equipment like this is a terrific idea. If
they had auctioned off the lot in bulk, they wouldn't have gotten much
more than $50 each anyhow. Better the iBooks stay in the community that
originally paid for them. That way the community gets the benefit rather
than (usually) a for-profit recycling/refurbing company. Not that I'm
against for-profits making a buck, but we _are_ talking about public
funds here. (Yeah, I know - some of these iBooks will turn up on eBay and
elsewhere - still, I'm sure most will stay with, and be used by, county
residents.)

Henrico County's implimentation of the sale wasn't the best though. There
are plenty of ways to control this sort of thing, too bad they didn't
forsee how many buyers would show up.

Shame the replacements are Dell . . . hee hee - wanna bet there'll be no
similar riot when Henrico County goes to flog off that lot in a couple of
years? That's if enough survive to even bother!

A small clip from the BBC article about the riot:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4159678.stm

It's rather strange that we would have such a tremendous response for
the purchase of a laptop computer, and laptop computers that probably
have less-than- desirable attributes, said Paul Proto, director of
general services for Henrico County commenting on the sale of the
four-year-old machines.

County officials said they would review events and see what could be
done differently for future sales.

Unofficial estimates said more than 12,000 people attended the sale.

Excuse me? less-than-desirable attributes? Well, now we know why
they're going to Dells--another IBM-centric idiot who doesn't know
what they had. :)

Re: $50 iBooks @ UVA

2005-08-17 Thread Brian
Truthfully, Most of the knowledgeable computer people I know like OS
X, and are envious of it when I show it off. They like the
functionality, and wish they could also have a virus free computer,
and simply wish the mac was more standardized compared to PCs so they
could use al the same hardware/software. mostly, though, they are
still stuck on the macs are too expensive idea. Even after I show
them cheap macs like the mac mini or iBook it doesn't fully sink in.
They've been told otherwise for too long.
They also don't quite grasp the idea that macs now use a unix based
OS. Mostly, though, PC users who really know computers simply don't
like apple as a company, or they don't like how elitest mac users
can sometimes appear. We all know how nice these macs we have are,
and why they are preferrable to PCs. But it's best we not brag about
it to those who don't use Macs. It's as offensive to a PC user as
when a president of an all PC college steps forward and says all of
the macs that people stampeded for are worthless and he can't fathom
why people would be so stupid. Instead, just let the mac speak for
itself to catch others attention. You can help it talk, but try not
to say bad things about the windows world, since it implies bad
buying/decision making of the PC user. Catch more flies with honey
than vinegar and all that.

staff haven't a clue what they are doing. The wireless went down in
one building for 2 weeks, the guys on site never bothered to say
anything about it to anyone else despite numerous complaints, and the
only answer to us students was it's not our responsibility. so the
main IT office never even got word that the wireless was down. Once
they did find out, they didn't even know what was wrong for another
week. Complete incompetence. What really pains me is that they have
a BW sitting under a table in a computer lab, no one knows how it
works, no one cares, so it jsut sits there taking up space.

Brian

Please don't generalize about a staff of incompetent IT pushing these
kinds of decisions, because at the University I work for, and several
others that I know about, it's not the IT staff who hate Macs, but the
IT MANAGEMENT who decide thou shalt standardize. We've lost several
Mac UNIX labs over the past few years because they weren't getting
enough use, and we'll save money by standardizing the labs. With the
volume deals that our supplier of XP boxes gives us, we actually do save
some money, unless you count the amount of time spent diagnosing
problems or calling for warranty service or putting out of order signs
on the PCs.

A number of the IT staff actually preferred to keep the Mac UNIX labs,
because there are students who otherwise have to go across campus to the
CS department's building in order to use one of their UNIX labs, or go
across campus to the building that houses our College of Liberal Arts,
where we still maintain a couple of Mac labs. Fortunately, the
standardization of the labs does not extend to the faculty and staff,
and we're allowed to choose whatever platform will allow us to get the
job done, whether that's MS-Windows, Mac OS9, Mac OSX, UNIX, LINUX, etc,
though it is preferred that you try to be relatively current in the
version of the OS you're using. The students are welcome to use
whatever platform they wish, with possible exceptions where a particular
class requires they use a software package that is not available on
their platform of choice.

If the Mac spoke for itself we'd have the majority of the market share. :)

Of course, it would have helped if Apple did what IBM did, and allowed
others access to the ROMs so clones could have been made.

No, PC wonks have convinced the public that theirs machines are true
computers and Macs are at best either toys or only something a graphic
artist would use. Matter of fact they've even stolen the phrase PC.
My PowerBook is as much a personal computer than any off-brand POS

Problems with situations like these is that management either
surrounds themselves with inadequate accounting staff who do not
properly look into the options available, or they do not listen to
their accounting staff. Good accounting staff would work closely

Re: $50 iBooks @ UVA

2005-08-17 Thread david
This argument has a huge flaw. Once upon a time a Mac was seriously
over engineered but they are not today. A Mac largely uses components
that come right off the shelf the same as PC manufacturers. The only
exception would be the logic board but even there Apple is using far
fewer custom chips today and utilizing off the shelf components there
too. Apple's assembly quality control is probably better which
accounts for Apple's lower dead on arrive rate than other
manufacturers but once you've achieved burn in I don't think the
argument that Apple's are higher quality holds water.

It is completely true that Macs last longer than PCs but I'd argue
that it is largely OS related today and not hardware. In the 90's
while hardware was getting faster and faster and Microsoft released
95, 98, and Millennium, each version of the OS required faster
computers, more memory, higher powered graphics cards, bigger hard
drives. I upgraded my Win3 machine to Win95 but two weeks later
reinstalled Win3 and bought a new computer with Win95. I didn't
upgrade to Win98, I knew better. I bought a new computer. That
computer wasn't too old when Win2k came out so I upgraded and lived
with it for a few months before buying a new computer. I didn't
upgrade to WinXP and I won't upgrade - in face based on the specs I
CANNOT upgrade to WinVista.

But when I bought a new PowerMac 7200 which came with MacOS 7.x every
time I upgraded to the new version of the MacOS I got a faster
computer! Sure, when I upgraded to OS 9 I needed more memory and by
that time I had a much larger hard drive but the fact remains that
from MacOS 7 through MacOS 9 while memory requirements increased the
upgrade didn't create a speed hit - it gave a speed increase. Now the
shift to OS X required that I buy a new computer but from OS 10.1
through 10.3 I got a faster computer and if 10.4 didn't give me
greater speed it didn't slow it down either.

And that is why I think Macs are lasting longer than PCs.

David - who not only posses every Mac he's ever bought (except for
the PowerBook that tried urban surfing) but also still has all but
one Windows PC he's ever bought. (It's just that the older PCs are
now running linux, not windows)

Exactly. If they were bargain bin then my friend's shop would have
like numbers of broken PM G4, PM G5, and iMac G5. But since Sept
last year, he's had only one PM G5 come in for repair... heat problem

Will Vista Clean Up WinRot?
by Preston Gralla
Aug. 9, 2005

[my comments in [ ] -- TjL]

You're not imagining it --- the older your PC gets, and the more you
use it, the slower it gets.

[again we see PC as being used exclusively for Windows]

The phenomenon is called WinRot. It's caused by lots of things:
programs with sloppy uninstall routines that litter your hard drive
with their leavings; conflicts between several different versions of
the same DLL; Registry gunk; invisible startup programs; and more.

[All of which are not a problem in OS X]

Microsoft claims that it's got the problem on its radar, and that
Vista will stop the rot.

[rght... raise your hand if you buy it...]

Vista will include a control panel applet that monitors system
performance, and that will suggest what startup programs may be
causing problems. Microsoft also says it's cleaning up the plumbing
to fix the DLL conflict problem. And it's adding new features such as
automatic disk defragmentation that it says will help as well.

[they are focusing on cleaning up the problem after it happens,
rather than preventing it]

I'm only partially convinced. Some of the rot-stopping features, such
as SuperFetch are essentially juiced-up versions of existing
features, and don't seem as if they'll necessarily do much good. For
example, even if you regularly defrag your system, it still slows
down over time, and so automatic defragging won't solve the problem.

[exactly]

Still, it's heartening to know that Microsoft recognizes WinRot, and
will at least partly solve it. On the other hand, the less WinRot
there is, the less excuse there is to buy a new PC every year or two.

[it's taken this long for MS to recognize WinRot?]

$50 iBooks @ UVA

2005-08-16 Thread Karen Thompson
I heard on the news this afternoon there was a stampede at UVA and people
got hurt waiting in line to buy a $50 iBook. Police had to be brought in to
quiet the crowd. Other people were talking around me so couldn't hear why it
started. Anyone know? Anyone out there actually go?

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Only in America! It's a sad commentary on money, greed and conspicuous
consumption in this country. I think you are right Michelle, some of these
will definitely end up on eBay. Why didn't they just donate to the Christina

wonder about the administrative brains (or not) in education after years
working for a community college with no fiscal responsibility. Of course at
the college I worked for, they just put Macs in the dumpster. Go figure!

CBS even did a story about it on the national news at 6:30. said
there was over 5000 people, and even had some footage of them opening
the gates. The problem was it was held at the race way, and the
building was not close to the gate they opened so everyone went running
for the building..

I wish I could say I was a dumpster diver and got some of those Macs, but
alas, it hit the local news before we knew what was happening. But now I'm
keeping a sharp eye as I understand the Windoze systems have won out and
next fiscal year the Macs will be history. (They have already replaced the
student labs with Windoze systems.) I'd like to have my old dual processor

Up until recently, the systems were changed out every two years so we were
fortunate at one time to have the latest and the greatest. Alas, no more.
Not even OS upgrades.

I hate it when campuses go all PC. It really has nothing to do with
doing the job better or saving money, it's really about a staff of
incompetent IT personnel who refuse to learn anything but the most
basic PC skills. Take the school I go to: all PC network, and the IT
staff haven't a clue what they are doing.

Re: $50 iBooks @ UVA

2005-08-16 Thread Karen Thompson
I think it is disgusting when students are not given the opportunity to
explore different operating systems. And yes, it is the IT staff that have
no imagination or inclination to learn another OS. They are biased and just
plain lazy. I'm sure there are some out there who would jump at the
opportunity to learn something other than Windoze.

What is definitely puzzling to me is the Mac systems were taken out of
graphic design labs. The college offers an AA in communication arts. In the
real world about 85% of design studios and print shops use Mac systems. How
does that prepare the student for the industry? It doesn't. Of course, when
I went to college, there were no computers. We did everything by hand,
including lettering. The good old days of paste-up with mylar, wax and Xacto
knives. And then there were the Vari-typer machines that preceeded our
modern computers for typesetting. I much prefer our technology of today but
wish those who don't do the work, don't make the decisions of the tools
professionals use.

As for that BW computer, talk to the lab personnel. Maybe you can make a
deal and free up that space for yet another Windoze machine.

week. Complete incompetence. What really pains me is that they have
a BW sitting under a table in a computer lab, no one knows how it
works, no one cares, so it jsut sits there taking up space.

 Not even OS upgrades.

If you think Only in America, oh, dear, you are so, sooo
wrong...greed is a natural human condition.

I think you are right Michelle, some of these
will definitely end up on eBay. Why didn't they just donate to the
 Christina
Foundation or another charitable org and take the write off?

Because as a government entity they're non-profit, ergo, no tax
 write-
off and they have to go through specific procedures dispose of
surplus systems; most of the time these rules are deeply convoluted
because people are always good at manipulating them for personal
 profit.

Also, having worked in .edu and non-profits for quite a while, I can
tell you that our systems tend to get run into the ground before we
send 'em off to Surplus Property.

 Of course at
the college I worked for, they just put Macs in the dumpster. Go
 figure!

Hey, more for the dumpster divers! I should hope you rescued at least
 some of them...

The best example for me is to stand at the airport and wait for luggage

to the conveyer the faster their luggage will show up. Just step
back and give everyone some room. theirs might show up first and

It always amazes me how many computer people are stupid. But that's
what most are taught in the vocational schools called Colleges and
Universities these days.
