I don't have a free backup ap, but there is an ap called iPartition
which allows you to repartition drives without erasing/reformatting
them It was a lifesaver for me (timewise) and I've used it about 8
times without any problems. It's not too cheap either, I think I paid
$45 for it with the pound/dollar conversion. Yes, you can download it,
but it doesn't work unless you pay.

I am sure you have looked into this. I use an external 5" firewire

I'm a big fan of SuperDuper. I've been using it through the last few

It will back-up to a remote server and I think it has an option to do
the type of incremental backup you want. If not, you could use it in
conjunction w/ChronoSync--there's a nice article on that here:

And now for the tip: although I love OS X, one thing that gets me is
that when I single-click on a file/folder name in a finder window (I
use the 'view as columns' option), if there is not enough space in the
right column, the left columns gets moved off to the left and the file
name disappears under the next column. It makes getting back to that
column a bit of a pain, especially when it happens all the time. Well,
I've discovered that if you command-click on the file name again (or
any area of the half-hidden column), the left column comes back into
full view again without any need to reach for the scroll bar. Neat, I
thought.

formerly dead HD and backup software

2005-02-16 Thread w miller
Thanks to those who advised me on the hard drive in my Lombard I
thought was dead. The data retrieval guy told me he could detect the
drive and sent it back. I put it in a different Lombard and there it
was!
I've now bought a 120GB external drive for nightly backups and would
like advice on the best backup software. Is Apple's Backup suitable for
scheduling external backups? One of the things this disaster did was
force me to start working in Panther, so now I have files in OS X and
OS 9.2.2. I'm using my Pismo now.

My understanding is that since USB isn't shown in the device tree it
can't be booted in a normal way. You can select it in Startup Disk but
it won't boot. I believe some type of hack could be written to allow
USB booting, but none are available AFAIK.

The user folder is a good start. Now, did you create any special network
locations? If so, those aren't saved in the user folder.

The best way to do that is to clone your current startup disk onto another
disk, external or even an iPod if it's hard disk is large enough.

Then, format, reinstall. When everything is working fine, then you can
restore the bits and pieces you need from the cloned installation.

I've never used Backup to copy my whole drive, since CCC has done and

Same here. I have several Firewire & USB 2.0, 2.5" drives. With an
iMac they boot fine in OS 9.2.2 or OS X using FireWire. Using USB I
can boot under 9.2.2 but not X. It's only using USB 1.1 of course,
these iMacs are 1.1 only. Why this is I haven't a clue.

I don't remember installing Déjà Vu, but when I have an internal CD-
Burner installed it's visible in System Preferences. It's possible to
choose Toast as the target.
Did this app come with OS X or some other package? Anyone know?

If you want to back up your data - and all your data is in your directory -
it is a barely okay backup solution. Its selling point is being able to
backup to your .Mac account. I¹ve never been able to get a successful backup
to .Mac twice in a row. For backing up to CD, DVD, or other drive it is lame
compared to other inexpensive solutions.

I can recommend two good solutions and these are just the two that I use
personally. There are lots more options.

1) SuperDuper! Does what CCC does much more elegantly and offers other
options as well. I use this application about once a month to back up my
system and applications folder -> but not data

2) Deja Vu is fantastic if you regularly connect to an external drive or, in
the case of a desktop if you have more than one drive internal or external.
It backups up user specified folders on a schedule you set. My directory is
backed up daily at work while I am at lunch to a firefire external.

For me, Backup is very nearly useless. It offers limited options,
doesn't have much flexibility in terms of scheduling, and can't make
complete backups of your drive like CCC can. The only advantage is that
it's free with any .mac subscription.

Simply plug in the drive, format it, and pop in your OS X install CD,
select the drive for install, and install OS X. It's a no brainer.
Once OS X is installed, you can select the startup disk in System
Preferences. If, for example, something is corrupted on your internal
drive in your Pismo and you need to boot from the Firewire drive, then
after you press power on your Pismo (make sure the external drive is
plugged in and powered up), hold down the shift key until you see a
blue screen where you will be able to select a drive to boot from. I
too use a 75 gig external Firewire drive for backup. Works great. .
.hope this helps,

Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your startup drive. Then, use the Startup
Disk preference pane to change the startup disk. This is all assuming you're

FWIW I bought Applecare on my 17" and I am an Apple Certified Portable Tech.
The parts are prohibitively expensive and Applecare is well worth it if even
1 part goes in those 3 years.

Re: Backup computer (was: Re: Applecare, how long should it take?

2005-01-25 Thread Andrew
There is always room for an old laptop to be stashed
in a corner somewhere, and for a backup, thats all
thats needed.

Pismo is a great choice for a backup machine.

I agree. After buying a computer for several thousands dollars, I can't
imagine somebody will turn around and get a "backup" computer, even if it is
a used one, just in case. I replaced my Pismo with my current 17" and I
still have the Pismo, so I could use it in case I have to have my 17"
serviced, but I can understand that someone who spends $3500 for a new
machine might be a little strapped for cash...

Re: OS-X Backup

2004-12-19 Thread Andrew F.
I tried that and had a lot of stability problems when booting from my
external drive. What I do now is just a clean install of OSX on my external
drive with utilities for maintenance, and also maintain a copy of my home
folder, which I replace every week or any time there is a major change.

PB G4 667 DVI backup battery only with PMU-card

2004-10-10 Thread Mikael Byström
I seem to lack the proper manual, but isn't it odd that a place like
Wegenermedia only want to sell the backup battery for the Powerbook
G4 667 DVI only with the PMU board? Are they fused as one item physically
or it just an Apple repair/spare part thing?

Would it be feasible to get just the right batteries off the shelf and
replace those in the 667 DVI? I tried to find the battery source someone
tipped us off to some time ago, but I couldn't find it as I don't
remember the name. If you do, please send it my way.

Seth,

I guess I'm the one who posted this. I wrote File Synchronization. It's a
synchronization tool but it can also, of course, used to backup. However, it
is not a replacement for Retrospect. It won't let you backup your whole OS X
system disk, for example. It won't also let you backup personal folders from
other users on your Macintosh, unless their stuff is readable. It is
designed to be a personal tool, so that you can backup your own personal
stuff onto another Macintosh, hard disk partition or external hard disk, or
even an iDisk. It is a $12 shareware. You can use it up to 30 days from the
first use. During that time, there is no limit to any functionality as
opposed to other supposedly similar shareware synchronization tool.

You can get more information from:

Re: OSX backup shareware

2004-09-07 Thread Seth Austen
I've recently started using OSX on my pismo and am looking for software
to do regular backups in OS 10.3.4. Before I spring for an upgrade from
retrospect 4.3, I vaguely remember that someone on this list has
authored a shareware program that will do this. Is this correct? If so,
who wrote the software, how do I get it and how much does it cost?

Firewire Drive for Backup - Recommendations

2004-09-02 Thread G Harris
I'm looking for recommendations for a new firewire
drive, and for OSX-compatible backup software.

Here's my situation:

2 networked Macs - ibook G3 with OS 10.2, and
old Powermac 7100, OS 8

I'd like to buy the firewire drive for the ibook, and
do a full backup of the older mac (which I'll
eventually replace).

Any comments on the best hardware / software?

dead Tibook == dead backup battery?

2004-03-08 Thread Dan Bongert
I have a Tibook 400 that I broke the power socket on, so the pbook wasn't
getting power (battery wasn't charging, etc). I bought a new logic board on
Ebay (it's a 500MHz board, so I got a speed boost out of the deal as well).
The logic board swap was tricky, but seems to have worked ok--the main
batteries are charging now, but the machine is otherwise dead--no response
when I try to power it on.

It sat for several months with no power whatsoever (no AC, no battery). Is it
possible the PRAM backup battery has died? Is that something that would
produce the symptoms I'm seeing?

Thanks!

Re: PRAM/Backup battery in WallStreet - Battery Reset

2004-02-03 Thread JOHN.E.ABRAHAM
Hello Listers,

Thank you all for the additional info,

I did notice the link to the site for good battery prices and will
also try the battery reset programme.

I have noticed that the battery is not being seen by the PB. It
reports that the LH media bay is empty and there are no leads alight
on the side of the battery. This I suspect is because I did not
use it over the Christmas / New Year period and beyond. The
battery must be flat and thus the Pram also, as without any power in
the main battery the Pram discharged as well.

As for Jim's problem I am not sure if it relates to the PRAM as the
sign normally is that the date has reset to the year 1904.Showing
that the PRAM has run out of charge if the PB is keeping time but
loosing or gaining seconds this may be another fault.

My Wallstreet Date & Time function consistently seems to lose about
15-30 seconds as evidenced by the adjustment that occurs almost every
time when I tell the control panel to manually "set time now". It
seems oblivious to the interval between those checks. Also, it may
actually be more serious since the CPanel is supposed to auto-check
for differences often anyway and I am merely noting what changes the
auto function has not fixed.
Is this kind of thing clearly indicative of bad PRAM battery? I have
not noted other problems other than the usual aggravating random
crashes that dog me from time to time.
Thanks, Jim

[snip]

The reason of course is that to do the recovery using CCC you must boot
using another volume.
I was wondering if anyone knew whether external drives attached via the
PCMCIA slot using a firewire adapter could
EITHER:

1) Boot the machine (have a feeling they cannot?)
Wallstreets can't boot from a FW adapter, they need the extension to
load to recognize the FireWire.
OR:

2) Allow it to operate in firewire target disk mode
Same thing - they can't be the 'serving' drive in target mode. They can
receive, meaning you could boot your Pismo in FWTM and see it on the
Wallstreet.

So am I stuck with my existing "open heart surgery" method of recovery,
or does someone know a better way?
In OSX I think you are, or as someone else mentioned you could use a
SCSI backup disk. In OS9 you could boot off of a CD and recover by
Firewire.
Maybe try CCCloner and/or Toast to make a bootable OSX CD with CCC so
you could still use the FW card to get to your backup?

Backup/recovery using PCMCIA Firewire adapter?

2003-12-21 Thread Gavin Tiplady
I have a much loved and constantly used Wallstreet (256MB, 10Gb running
10.2.6) which runs my Tomcat, Apache and Mail servers 24 x 7.

I'd like to be able to back it up to, and recover from, an external
disk using the excellent Carbon Copy Cloner (www.bombich.com), as I
currently do on my Pismo (which has firewire to make it easy of
course).

I could backup by connecting a USB disk as I have a USB adapter, but
you cannot boot from a USB disk to do the recovery (or can you?).

Currently what I do is create and share a drive image on the Pismo,
then open it from the Wallstreet using my home LAN connection so that
it appears as a mounted volume on my WallStreet desktop, then run CCC
to backup. It's slow but it works. If I ever had to recover, however,
it would involve taking my WallStreet's disk out, loading it in a
firewire enclosure and writing to it from that backup image using the
Pismo. Not impossible but not much fun.

The reason of course is that to do the recovery using CCC you must boot
using another volume.

I was wondering if anyone knew whether external drives attached via the
PCMCIA slot using a firewire adapter could

EITHER:

1) Boot the machine (have a feeling they cannot?)

OR:

2) Allow it to operate in firewire target disk mode

(Rationale: If it could boot then the recovery strategy would be to
simply boot using the backup volume and use CCC to clone back to the
internal disk. If it could operate in firewire target mode then I
might be able to recover to the internal disk by attaching the
WallStreet in firewire disk mode to the Pismo, and write to its
internal disk that way)

So am I stuck with my existing "open heart surgery" method of recovery,
or does someone know a better way?

Thanks in advance,
GT

Best disk utilities...repair & backup

2002-12-17 Thread Brian C. Peters
Just this last weekend I was working with one of my sound apps in 9.2.2 on
my PB667 hotplate and managed to completely disrupt the HD file system. The
result was a non booting HD in OSX or OS9. I initially used the Tech Tool
disc that Apple gives away with Applecare but it would freeze in the process
of validating the file structure. I then used Disk Warrior and this utility
(previously installed) brought back the PB to its original condition. Life
is good. The disk was so damaged that I was not allowed to preview the
imager before restoring.

The question is...Is this the best utility currently on the market? And...
Why can't Apple themselves be better about HD disk utilities for their
products? I doubt Disk First Aid would have touched this problem.

After this near miss I will be replacing the original HD with probably a 60
GByte IBM and creating separate partitions, something long over due. My work
requires moving massive audio files around on different computer systems and
I believe Retrospect 5.0 works the best for my workgroup. I get a kick out
of the extreme ease of the clients working cross-platform on the windows
machines of the network. Any thoughts or conformation about backup utilities
would be welcome also.

Re: HD/System folder backup

2002-04-02 Thread Scott Cave

I just got my VST 10GB expansion bay drive today from shoplet (I ordered on
March 23). When Shoplet told me they were backordered I immediately
Sherlocked the web for these drives. For anyone who is still interested in
finding one, kernelsoftware.com reported 4 in stock at about $50 each, and
dreamretail.com said that they can get their hands in a bunch of them for
about $80 each.

Good luck!

Mission accomplished! Thanks to all who contributed on this item. Booting
the Pismo from a CD and mounting the Cube HD on the Pismo desktop worked
like a charm. I now understand the difference between server and client!
Thanks again for the good advice.

Charlie:

It sounds to me like you mounted the Pismo on the Cube. You then dragged
files *from* the Pismo to the Cube. Whenever you copy System files from a
server you will get the "in use" errors.

However, if you reverse the server and client, you will have no problem. Do
this:
1) Mount the Cube on the Pismo
2) Drag the Pismo System Folder to the Cube

All should proceed as desired.

BTW, it's still a good idea to make an emergency CD.

Re: System Folder Backup

2002-04-02 Thread Jim

Um... Firewire Target Disk Mode? Can't you just boot your Pismo as a
Firewire Target Disk (holding the "t" key down immediately after
power-on), connect it to the Cube (already booted up) with a standard
firewire cable, and copy away? You'd need to use a USB CD-R drive on
the cube since it has only one external firewire port... or maybe it
is possible to chain a firewire CD-R drive through the Pismo target
disk. Then you can do a direct burn from the Pismo to CD.

I agree, it's not redundant at all.

Do you remember all of what is installed? Did you install the latest
version of that program on this machine? What were all those
freeware programs you installed?

There are lots of preferences files in the System Folder. Now some
of them may not have anything but the default settings but...

TIME. I've had HDs fail and on important systems I've had full
backups. Being able to bring the system back up in short order is
very useful. I once had a harddisk that was failing and I backed it
up every night and had it fail and had to restore it every morning.
I did this for about a week waiting for a replacement unit to arrive.
Being able to restore the whole HD and start using it was invaluble.

I certainly fully agree with this. Having to go through all your 3rd party
extensions, control panels, fonts and whatsnot, making a backup of a working
system folder is a good idea, that is, under OS 9.

OS 10 is a bit more problematic...

candygrammar n.: A programming-language grammar that is mostly syntactic
sugar; the term is also a play on `candygram'. COBOL, Apple's Hypertalk
language, and a lot of the so-called `4GL' database languages share this
property. The usual intent of such designs is that they be as English-like
as possible, on the theory that they will then be easier for unskilled
people to program. This intention comes to grief on the reality that syntax
isn't what makes programming hard; it's the mental effort and organization
required to specify an algorithm precisely that costs. Thus the invariable
result is that `candygrammar' languages are just as difficult to program in
as terser ones, and far more painful for the experienced hacker.

Not redundant. When one has a "happy" System Folder, that is the perfect time
to make a backup of it. Who wants to reload 3rd party extensions, fonts,
reset preferences in applications, etc., etc. I totally understand him
wanting to back up his existing System Folder. Of course, if he installs any

1) Mount the Cube on the Pismo
2) Drag the Pismo System Folder to the Cube

All should proceed as desired.

BTW, it's still a good idea to make an emergency CD.

Re: System Folder Backup

2002-04-01 Thread MikkiWokk

Here's a solution that will kill two birds at once. Chris Breen, who write
the Macworld "Mac 911" column also has Quicktime video clips providing tips.
In December he outlined the process for creating an emergency boot CD. His
stated purpose was to create your own CD, with a clean system, whereby you
could then add your favorite system utilities -- so that you can have the
ultimate in troubleshooting CDs -- all in one. You can follow this same
procedure and either include any system utilities you may have, or not, but
just make certain that you include File Sharing in the System Folder on the
CD you create. If you do not have a burner, borrow one, or go to a friend and
use one -- you'll need it just once to create this CD (actually, I'd
recommend you just get one, but that's up to you). Because I don't want to
violate any copyrights, I will not describe word for word what the procedure
was, but here's the web link to the video:

After you create this CD, boot your Pismo from this CD. Then you can make the
complete backup of your working System Folder to the Cube as you originally
intended.

Well basically, you can't affect (or replace) any files
on the server that are "in use." The System Folder on the Cube is
always "in use", therefore you can't replace it. If all you're doing
is transferring the System Folder to the Cube to back it up, that
should be fine.

On the subject of backups, though. I would suggest only back up
non-replaceable data; documents you've created, personal affects,
email, bookmarks, etc. Backing up System Folders and copies of
Applications is needlessly redundant since you already have media
with which to reinstall these items.

Personally, I backup only the items I note above (mostly just my home
directory in OS X) plus any installers and/or updaters I need and
don't already have CD somewhere. This cuts down on the time it takes
for me to back up my data as well as the cost of backup media.

Charlie,

You shouldn't have any problem to copy the system folder on your Pismo to
your Cube if you boot the Pismo from the system CD and then access the
Cube's hard disk through file sharing.

That's it! The server is the computer that is doing the file sharing; the
client is the computer that is accessing the server.

Nope, charlie has it correct; if the Pismo is booted to a Mac OS CD,
it cannot be a file sharing server. All it will be able to do is

No, Charlie. I think what Jeremy was saying was you look in the Chooser on
the
Cube and see your Pismo HD and mount it to your Cube and then transfer the
files.

Re: System Folder Backup

2002-04-01 Thread Gary D. Adams

I thought of that after I fired that off. I'm not sure. You can try and see.
Failing that (I'm new to PBs, so this is a shot in the dark), if it's
Firewire you can start up in firewire mode and if it's SCSI you could start
up in SCSI mode (of course, you'd have to have the requisite cables).

System Folder Backup

2002-04-01 Thread Harper, Charlie T

I tried to backup my System Folder on my Pismo but ran into some problems.
I connected my Powerbook to my Cube via a crossover cable and began to copy
the System Folder to the Cube. After a few files were transferred, I began
to get messages that this extension and that extension could not be copied
because they were "in use". Anyone think how I could make a complete
backup of my Pismo System Folder, complete with all the extensions? Thanks.

These batteries are 'dual' (i.e. two in one). But they're simply 2
5300/190/1400 batteries in a single casing. I successfully used a 5300
PRAM battery in my Lombard (same PRAM as Pismo/Wallstreet). The lower
power of the 5300 battery means it won't last as a PRAM battery alone for
long [i.e. _without_ the AC or main battery installed, while in sleep
mode], but works fine as a normal PRAM battery. The issue is also cost -
$30-$40 for a Lomb/Piz PRAM v. $3 for a 5300 PRAM (that's what I paid for
mine).

Nevertheless, the OP should look at recharging their PRAM - takes 24-48
hours of the 'Book plugged in.

Cheers,

I highly doubt that you would find that battery at Radio Shack. These are
pretty much custom made.

That being said, the backup battery is fairly easy to replace. You basically
pop up the keyboard and it's on the right side, easy to remove.

I would suggest you check with PowerBook Parts for a replacement battery
<http://www.pbparts.com/>. BTW, what makes you think that your backup
battery has to be replaced? When completely discharged, I've read somewhere
in Apple documentation that the PowerBook has to be plugged in the AC for at
least 24 hours before the backup battery will be fully recharged (yes,
that's a rechargeable battery).

The best guide to walk you through the steps required to service your Pismo
is the PowerBook (FireWire) Service Manual from Apple. You can find a pdf
version of it at <http://www.freehost.nu/members/enigmac/appleman.html> if
you can connect (which I can't right now).

Replacing the backup battery is about as hard as installing
additional RAM; the backup battery is under the keyboard, right next
to the hard drive. There's no real "procedure" to it; you unplug it
and pull it out. It's the black and amber "pack" right between the
hard drive and the right-hand palm rest, it's connector is next to
the right side screw for the shield that goes over the processor card.

I've yet to encounter a battery that RadShack didn't have in stock,
or at least could get for me within a reasonable amount of time. I've
never asked about powerbook lithium batteries though. I always
just carry the dead battery in with me and show it to them.

Re: Camcorder backup

As a photographer, I find magnetic media to be a non-archival way of storing
data, while CD's or DVD's will last longer than you do.
Video tape does not last and those who are storing their children's younger
years on them, will be disappointed to say the least when they look at them
in fifteen to twenty years.
