Have you tried FireFox? Has options for save as web archive, html
only, and save as web page, complete.

Due to ebay page naming, the file you r get is named .dll not .html,
but a quick rename to .html and you have something that opens fine in
either Safari or other web browsers.

Safari just doesn't cut it for almost any serious web viewing,
unfortunately. IMO.

Of course the other option is to save the auction in the My eBay

account on ebay, and click on the link there under Items I'm

2006-02-05 Thread Brian Steere
Hello ebayers on NMUG

I use a thing called baywatch which adds any frontmost auction to my ical
and alarms me.
I don't use it for everything but it can be handy.
One can also drag and drop the URL to the Desktop to have temporary but
convenient access to an auction (rather than saving the page).

Havent tended to use it but select all from browser, copy and paste into
textedit gets the lot - images and links too!. (In a sort of package
document).

Just been outbid on an icurve - oh well.
Anyone selling an iCurve?
(Its a laptop stand),
I fancy a wireless keyboard too if I see one at a good price.

Has anyone a verdict on the might mouse or a recommendation for a wireless
mouse with scroll and right click?

all the best

Firefox on my Jaguar susyetm. I just pulses in and out of the dock, but
never launches and it won't quit the dock.). I have had good success
with loading my pics and accessing all of the feautres.

Safari for Jaguar has been HORRIBLE to use with eBay. Features don't
appear or won't function (such as relist an item after having made a
second chance offer that goes unwanted) and pictures often won't upload
when using safari. I have to assume that my version of Safari is, in a
way, like an orphaned application. I wish Safari were upgradable. If I
can find a set of legit Tiger installation CDs second hand someday (I'm
NOT going to jump through the hoops Apple has set up...at least not
now.), I'd love to see how much better the newer version of Safari is.

Meanwhile, Mozilla does the trick.

Good luck!

You're absolutely right. I just tried Gmail and got in. Before, it
wouldn't even load, so they must have spent some time tweaking things
to give the limited, feature-free access. I'm glad this came to my

Sorry to hear you had that experience. Regretfully, problems occur -
it's the cost of doing business. Consider that the fraud rate over
the 'net is only about 2/3 of the fraud rate of normal mail-order and
card-present use.

If you had used a standard merchant account, such as thru your local
bank, you would not only be out the basic money and the merch, but
you'd be hit with up to a hundred dollars in chargeback processing
fees. AND be faced with higher transaction fees in the future, since
you now have a history of fraudulant processing.

Paypal is one of the better card processing services. But just
because they're better doesn't mean you can relax. You simply must
use common sense.

Review Paypal's policies and procedures carefully.

Make sure the buyer is Verified.

Only ship to the verified address.

Always use tracking / delivery confirmation.

For expensive items, always buy insurance and require a signature.

When fraud occurs, work with Paypal to get back what $ you can. But
then you can also file an insurance claim and fraud charges, since
you have the signature. This is no different than what you would
have to do in a normal meatspace transaction.

Not cool at all ! I'm pretty sure that's a violation of eBay policy
and is sleazy at the least. And if he is overseas but the item is here
in the states I would be very very cautious ! That is a very common
scam used on Craigslist and other places laptops are sold.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions! And funny, while looking around the
past few weeks, I had ended up on that Craigslist site, too! Not even sure
how I found it, probably google. I'll steer clear of that one.

The G3-French guy, when I first replied to his first message (both of us
using the ebay message center), I got an automated reply from a US Air Force
email account which had English and French wording and his name. So I
thought that was a good thing if he was in the military. But when I asked
Mr. G3 in the next ebay message if he was in the military, he wrote that No,
he was not, but he had access to that Air Force email account. Now THAT, I
thought, was also really strange! ... unless he is dating some Air Force
lady! ;-) BTW, he's also a 0 feedback person, a brand newbie on ebay,
but then so am I so didn't want to hold that one thing against him.

Anything I buy through on-line places like eBay I only pay with Paypal
which will protect the buyer or USPS money orders. Nobody wants the US
Postal Inspectors on their butt from mail fraud and it's even worse if
a USPS money order was payment.

I agree about PayPal and credit card thru PayPal, that way you get double
protection if needed. And surprisingly, Mr. French-G3's item shows he does
accept PayPal. -- Good to know about the USPS money orders and them sicking

It's getting realy fishy now And I would never make a large
purchase from someone on eBay 0 feedback. Everyone has to start
somewhere but that would be a risky thing to do for very much money.

And CC-Paypal payments are covered but we all (consumers) end up
paying the cost in the long run. Only Paypal and the theives make
money. Paypal will still charge you a fee to give your money back.

best browser to save ebay pages with text and picture?

Ebay like many companies on line is PC anal and they are big enough
that they don't care if other platform users are having issues with
their site. I find Safari to be much slower on ebay than Firefox and
the last version of Explorer for the Mac to be almost unusable on
ebay.

Tom

Question re best browser to use to save ebay pages with text and picture:
I have found that the last version of Explorer for the Mac is the
only browser that allows me to quickly download an ebay page, with
pictures, all in one file. To check the progress of the auction I
just double click the downloaded page, click on 'Connect' and check
progress.
Are there other browsers that will save the text and picture as one
file, as Explorer for the Mac 5.23 does?

Thanks.

THe other thing that could be done with a tech person who says you
need to use a real computer is to immediately ask to speak to their

the individual is poor customer service? It's amazing how things can
change in tone when you do that, and also maybe request the name and

Often, while traveling for work, I visit little ($99 complete Pentium

Macs and eBay

2005-12-04 Thread Amber R.

Hi,
This is partially related to my previous question. It appears that
eBay is not really that Mac friendly. In fact, in a discussion with
one of their live help people today, I was told if you were using a
regular computer, you would be fine when I was asking about the
sign-in problems I was having.

I was told also that I needed to update my browser..although my

Anyway, it appears that some of the problems I am having are related
to my not using a regular computer and not having an up-to-date
browser that works with some sites.

Amber,

What kind of problems are you having? I haven't experienced any
problems with Safari and ebay.
Are you running Mac OS X 10.4.3? With the updates that came out the

I have had an eBay account almost since its inception. Over the
years I have used assorted Macs with different OS (now Tiger) and
browsers (now mostly Safari), all with no problems. For sellers who
prefer to use Macs, there is an excellent auction program at:

Ebay like many companies on line is PC anal and they are big enough that
they don't care if other platform users are having issues with their site. I
find Safari to be much slower on ebay than Firefox and the last version of
Explorer for the Mac to be almost unusable on ebay.

Safari just does not support things that well. When I started using
FireFox, I have had almost no problems with even complex sites- only
limit is those that need activeX components downloaded and run.

Hope that helps.

I've had some minor issues with eBay, but nothing that would create any
big problems. I use Camino, and in the preferences (extra download) you
can use agent spoofing to fool sites into thinking you are using a
different browser. I rarely use it, but some sites will not work at all
without using say IE for Windoze.

Take care.

It's an extension for Firefox. Just search for it on the extensions
page. Safari also has this option if you enable the Debug menu by
typing this line into Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

To turn it off, you simply type:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 0

You mentioned that you have a keyboard problem. Someone suggested

did have some minor problems back in the days of OS 8 but not since

The same thing is available with Safari, as long as you install the

Hello Harry,

The thing about this situation is that I was having really no
problems with this site or any other until about a week ago.

eBay seems well aware of the problem with the missing t's in their
live chat. Typing in all caps resolves it. I have been able to
list numerous items with photos on Safari, on eBay, with no problem
for sometime now. However, in the last week, it has suddenly become
very problematic.

I have changed my eBay password, emptied the cache, dumped Safari
preferences, reset Safari, tested the keyboard etc etc. Still don't
know what the problem is but am going to try Firefox and iCab and see
how they work for me.

Thanks for your reply !

I use eBay with no problems. Tech support is woefully ignorant.

you're back to keyboard/input problems. Make sure that you don't have

Check in international settings for US/English.

Try opening a new text document and type each key to make sure they
all type correctly.

So, in the gasoline analogy, the Mac would be a premium computer,
or a plus at the very least. I'm happy with that, thank you very much!

Peter Apockotos

Hi Peter,

The primary problems I am having are password refusal and repeated
return to the sign in page. Sometimes I can't sign in at all even
though just a couple hours earlier, I had used the same user name
and password. It's very frustrating - especially when I have some
auctions running and more to list and I can't access them without
going through this ridiculous sign-in routine whereby I have to enter
my user name and password over and over again until it catches.

I assure you there is no typing error on my part either.

I will be setting up an auction listing and hit continue and then it
will take me back to the sign-in page !!

I am indeed running 10.4.3 and just installed the most recent
security update which is supposed to address Safari related problems
amongst others. Apple Software update is not listing any others.
Which ones were you referring to ?

As I mentioned in my other note to the list, all of these problems
just started occurring a week ago but I have not installed any new
software at all.

LOL - While this is a terrific analogy and very favorable towards the

prove that Macs were quite inferior to PC's. To follow your

He seemed to feel that their PC programmers were completely incapable

Amber,

You must have stumped him with your reply. Either that, or his pee-
cee was experiencing the BSOD syndrome.

Way off topic, but still has me laughing...about a month ago I went
through the McDonald's drive through for breakfast. It had one of
those nice, new video screens that display your order. After about a
minute, I was asked for my order. I gave it, and it was repeated back
to me. Silence. Then I was given the total. I waited before
proceeding to the window because throughout the entire ordeal, about
3 minutes; the nice, new screen had an image of Windows Scan Disk
running (well, sort of) that was stuck at 87%.

I only wish I had the digital camera with me!

He certainly was not the brightest bulb - poor fellow. I am not
sure if he is really deserving of the term Tech either.

Another example of his response to my question re: Safari : He
supplied me with a link to update my browser - the link was for
Safari V. 1.2 !! I advised him that we were now up to 2.0.2. He
had nothing to say to that either.

Oh well...I guess that live help chat was 20 minutes of my life

I'm a PC admin, as well as one of only a handful of Mac users in my
area, but I can tell you that even the best PC is still worse than the
worst Mac. I know, I own a PowerBook 190, which is generally considered
to be a Road Apple, that ran OS 7.5.2 until only recently. That's beside
the point, though. My point is that many support types are too dumb to
support Mac users because nobody uses them. I still remember the
headache I had when calling my ISP to setup the 190 on my dialup account.

Try using Firefox is all I can suggest. I use it on my PC, as well as
having setup FF on my Grandpa's OS X machine. I'd run it on mine, but
the Lombard won't be in until tomorrow. I'd go ahead and install either
the SafariFox or iFox skin from the start, to get the beautiful Safari
look, though.

Amber,

New idea: download and run a utility called DoktorKleaner.
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21470

Its a shell script that runs various repairs based on your current problem.
It has 4 or 5 repair scripts just for Safari.

Amber,

I don't recall seeing which PB or iBook you are using,
but I have a Pismo 400 MHz that I picked up las June.
You mention problems with the t not showing up - I
have this problem with my Pismo - it is very hit or

always. Perhaps your t key is flaking out too and
you wouldn't see that on a password that doesn't echo

any problems on eBay (never sold anything on eBay

Hello Barry - Sorry, I am using a 1.25 ghz 15 PB - running 10.4.3
and Safari 2.02.
The problems are mainly with sites that require entering any sort of
text information and some drop down menus. The t key works fine
in Word and text edit etc...it's just that this keyboard seems to be
a bit quirky. i.e. a few times now, the entire keyboard has suddenly
become inverted - i.e. with caps lock key on, the letters are all
lower case and with it off, they are all upper case. No rhyme or
reason behind it...it just starts, then stops with no clear reason as
to why.

I am not sure this is related to the Safari thingwho knows.

Anyway, thanks for your reply,

Amber

I remember once I had a problem listing an item I was going to sell, but that

I guess just don't understand what is wrong with this PB then. It
was working fine up until a week ago and then suddenly - all kinds of

Stanton,

You can schedule them to begin whenever you want but eBay charges a
small fee for that ability if you list them through the website on
the spot. With eBay software, you can prepare the auction listings
ahead of time and then have them automatically upload when you're
ready. This is great when the 10 cent sales roll around like the one
tomorrow on eBay.ca.

I think Garagesale does this - I just learned about it from another
member here when we were talking about this Mac/Safari problem.

Dear Amber,

The last time I checked with eBay I was told their software which could
provide the ability to store a seller's listings prepared all week long, to
all go live on a designated day and time was a feature only available to
those accessing with their site with Windows platform browsers/computers. I
was further told that they were unaware of any software which could provide
this enhancement for Macintosh users.

Further, when I visited the Apple store in Emeryville, CA in October, for
the express purpose of finding such a program, I consulted with the Mac
Geniuses there, who suggested iSale and GarageSale. When I looked at the
package of the one carried by the store (iSale, I believe) and also read
reviews the Geniuses referred me to of both of these packages on-line while
I was in the store, I ended up returning the iSale to the shelf, and not
seeking to acquire GarageSale either, since neither seemed to be able to
ably do what I'm describing- at least without dramatically limiting the
content you could include in your postings. I believe the limitation which
most discouraged me here was not being able to have more than perhaps three
or four rather small photographs per posting, if my memory serves me
correctly.

Bottom line is that I went home and got myself a used PC (which I'm
beginning to learn to use) just simply (but importantly) to acquire the
ability to have my ads all begin and end at the one time each week which I
feel is most advantageous to me.

Again, I'm hoping the information I gathered then was wrong, or that this
shortcoming to the Mac eBay applications I mentioned here have now been
augmented to provide this feature.

Many blessings,
stanton

Oh, I don't know--I'd say be very cautious about using eBay.

It's so damn addicting--and you can find so many great non-computer
items too, that it's hard to keep to any monthly budget you might set
up for yourself. Let's see--there was the telephone stuff, the pizza
stone and peel (well, that was a gift), the battery charger, the
comic/doll stuff for a friend's little girl, and a whole lot more over
the years. :)

So yes.be very cautious about using ebay. :)

I've gotten more good deals than bad ones on ebay.
There are plenty of scams on there, however. I see some every time
go there. I've even gotten a few shut down.

Someone else mentioned that it's addicting.
Sometimes it can be. I always think about it for at least a day
before bidding.

Once I happened across a yard sale that consisted of
a whole room of unopened items obviously bought from a television

Re: 'new' eBay Wallstreet II defective?

2004-03-29 Thread Mikael Byström
I'm not sure how much this is related, but I also can't boot with
batteries *some times*. However, my WS II won't forget dates unless it
have lost power while in sleep and I have to do a Power Reset. As one of
the screws won't take on the batery side, this happens during movement
while in sleep. Because of this I always turn it off.

Could my backup battery be starting to show its age? Is there some way to
measure the backup battery and make sure? I do have another one, but I'm
not sure about the quality and it comes from a WS I that kept turning
itself off, though I think it was a combination of the PMU and the
motherboard.

Re: Ebay G5 query

2004-02-27 Thread Dan K
LOL, having now read through this thread from its start I've noticed
no-one here has offered up an explanation of how this (obvious) scam
actually works.

Can it be no lister has popped for one of these 'deals'??

Or is it possibly the case that any lister niave enough to have popped
for one is still somehow savvy enough to _not_admit_ to it here. G

BTW, this topic is rather _on-topic_. Similar ads form an overly largish
percentage of eBay's PB-area listings as well. Any lister interested in
purchasing a recent 'Book from eBay should be aware of their existence,
forwarned being fore-armed and all that . . .

Last year there was a lister who lost $1200 on a 'discounted' new
TiBook in a similar deal.

The scam is that for the $235 'fee' you're put in touch with someone
who purports to be clearing property from a failed business, a
cancelled transaction, a bankruptcy deal, or the ever-popular 'Apple
employee with a discount'.

The explanation is that the seller knows full well that the value of
the computer is much higher than what they're asking, it's just that
they need the cash as soon as possible, so they'll take the small loss
to stave off a larger loss; often some sob story about Eastern European
gangsters threatening the seller's family is added for color. (Many of
these scams are coming out of Romania)

Then you're directed to wire the cash to the seller and the computer
will be shipped to you.

Riight.

The deal with the $235 is that they've suckered people out of that
much, even if they get cold feet later.

Another con that is being done is people selling powerbooks in this
fashion, but the seller even gets the Powerbook. However, the original
one was purchased with stolen CC information, and the buyer is on the
hook for receiving stolen property. Most often the buyer is determined
to be an innocent in the scam, but you lose the powerbook anyway, and
the money you spent, too.

It's a con. Like all cons, they depend on your greed outweighing your
common sense.

If it sounds too good to be true it is.

Remember this, repeat as needed.

Shout it if necessary: IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT IS!

Re: Ebay G5 query

2004-02-27 Thread Pat Heidingsfelder
I have also been following this thread. since it has now been brought
back up, this is how I 'believe' it goes:
You pay for a *spot in a pyramid type scheme. You get access to what
they call ebooks. You try to get as many people as possible to go to
the site and also buy into the pyramid type scheme. That is why there
are so many of them on eBay. People have bought into them, then trying
to get others to buy into the pyramid also.

The reason I know this is, a friend (now roommate) got suckered into
one. It was for a Powerbook!! He is a little eccentric, and really
wanted a powerbook. Check it out at electronicsmatrix.com I think.
http://www.electronicsmatrix.com/content/templates/tracks.asp?
articleid=63zoneid=8

If that link works it is for the Powerbook one.

Sorry everyone if this is off topic

Hmm, on 2/24/04, clearly thinking quite astutely about Ebay G5 query,
simon goslin, penned:
Has anyone seen this advert on ebay?

Apple Power Mac G5 Dual 2Ghz for only $235

This is the link in question...

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2789998233category=51036

Appartently if your bid is sucessfull you'll get the instructions on how to
go about getting a G5 for peanuts.

Sounds way too dodgy to me, but I just wondered if anyone out there had seen
it and proceeded.

Yeah, on hundreds of items. Pure and obvious scam which no one on this list
is likely to fall for. I just ignore 'em.

Too bad eBay hasn't the ethics to pull that c--p!

Now maybe we can get back to on-topic stuff. (Unless the Apple Power Mac G5
Dual 2Ghz has suddenly become a laptop.)

Re: Ebay G5 query

2004-02-24 Thread Wayne Schneck
There was a similar auction running here (US) on ebay for then the
latest G4 towers. If you one (and I think everyone who bid probably was
contacted by seller and given the info if you paid) you received the
email instructions to get a low cost, new G4.

One thing that was a red flag, they only accepted money order or
checks. So if you received your email and the info was bogus, you lost
your money.

Be careful of things to good to be true, especially Macintosh products
on ebay. I think I read that the Macintosh products (the powerbooks in
particular) were the leading scam products.

'new' eBay Wallstreet II defective?

2004-02-23 Thread Matthew D. O'Conner
Just bought a replacement Wallstreet II (300) on eBay and it may be defective.

It has 128Mb RAM and is running OS 9.2.2

The PRAM battery is shot, no big surprise here. It will start from
the battery (I have two known good ones bought new about one year
ago) if it has had the date set while the batteries remain in place.
What is a surprise is that it will NOT start from the battery (or
batteries) if the battery has been removed for a time (and thus the
dates / PRAM info. lost).

It does consistently start when plugged in (I have one of the
updated, warranty Apple power adapters).

Even if the dates are all wrong, it should still start from the
battery, shouldn't it?

I'm thinking that I may need to return this. I have a newish PRAM
battery in another Wallstreet II/300 that just died but I don't want
to open up the new one just to test this; if I did that, I'm sure
that I could not return it.

Suggestions?

First, try resetting the Power Manager (see small decal behind the flip

into the wall. Then, run Battery Reset with the battery installed.

Ebay G5 query

2004-02-23 Thread simon goslin
Howdy!

Yes, they would definitely work. Maybe the reason there is no bid is that,
at almost $70, they may be a bit on the expensive side, or not a real great
deal.

I did a few searches on eBay and found a 30GB currently at $62, a few 40GB
around $75, etc. Might be the reason why nobody bid so far...

That, and that - especially if 1) you're ripping your CDs with iTunes, 2)
you are running MacOS X, and/or 3) you want plenty of storage and a quick
drive - this drive is no faster than the drive that came with your G3
(Pismo and maybe even earlier) and only twice the size, so it's not that
great of a deal.

I have found that each time I get a larger drive, I think it's big enough
for my needs and yet (year or two later) I soon find the drive getting
filled up. So from my 10GB (which actually is about 9.6-9.8GB usable) I
expect that my next drive will need to be 60GB. And from posts on this
list, there is a big difference between the 4200rpm drives (which tend to
have only a 2MB buffer) and the newer 5400 or 7200rpm drives (and the
better ones of these have an 8 or 16MB buffer, which makes them much
quicker - less going back to the drive). YMMV, of course.

Actually, they only take the sellers money.

You say you're pissed at eBay and they should do something. Well, they can't
do anything unless you tell them there's a problem. How are they supposed to
read through the millions of emails sent each week to find the small
percentage that might be scams? I have a hard enough time keeping up with
the few hundred I get each week.

This is why they include the disclaimer at the end of each and every message
(including the one you posted in your follow-up to this message). Here it is
in case you missed it. Note the link at the end regarding stopping spam:

This email was sent by an eBay member via eBay's email forwarding system. If
you reply to the email, your response will go directly to the member and not
 through eBay.

eBay does not tolerate spam (i.e., unsolicited commercial email) and is
taking steps to protect members from this abuse. In addition, solicitations
to buy or sell items outside of eBay violate eBay rules and are not covered
by services that protect members such as feedback, insurance, escrow, and
dispute resolution. If this is an offer to buy/sell items outside of eBay,
please do not participate. Enter the following link into your browser to
 learn more. Link: http://pages.ebay.com/help/new/stopping_spam.html

At the company where I work, we sell thousands of dollars worth of
restaurant equipment each month on eBay. I handle all eBay transactions. By
providing the best possible customer service we can, we've managed to
maintain a 100% feedback rating. Needless to say I also get some spam and
unsolicited offers. If I suspect them to be shady, I won't hesitate to
report them to eBay. I don't have time to sit around and grumble about
eBay's poor service (which I have yet to experience). eBay has a system for
reporting and I use it.

I guess I'm making this point because I feel like I'm being judge guilty by
association. When you consider that there are literally millions of
transactions occurring each year on eBay, then even if one percent of them
went bad (I don't know the actual numbers), we're talking thousands of
people who were ripped off. I don't doubt that eBay is trying to do
something about them but I can only imagine that it would take a police
force the size of a large city to investigate all the deals that have gone
bad, let alone policing all the scam-artists attempting to cheat somebody.

I'm actually impressed that it's not as bad as it could be on eBay.

This link takes you to a page that will allow you to report a fraud (or
suspicious activity). It walks you through the topics in order to narrow
down your specific issue: http://pages.ebay.com/help/basics/select-RS.html

It took me a few moments to find it. I clicked on the services (ie. services
available to buyers and sellers) link at the top of any eBay page. When I
scrolled down the page I saw the topic Safe Harbor with a link to fraud
protection.

Clicking on Fraud Protection took me to a page with an overview of how eBay
deals with fraud. Near the bottom of that page I found a link to a Fraud
FAQs page. http://pages.ebay.com/help/basics/fpp.html

eBay is huge. Just like any huge institution they have a lot of information
covering every aspect of their organization. It takes a while to wade
through it but it's there. I doubt that there is an quick easy way to find
anything on eBay, good or bad.

For what it's worth, I've reported questionable activity several times to
eBay. This included one seller dealing in pirated software, a seller
charging a surcharge on PayPal credit card transactions (which is against
the law), and a seller misrepresenting an iBook as a PowerBook G4 (the specs
listed were a mishmash of two models with a picture of an iBook).

In every case eBay dealt with the situation. The seller who was pirating was
removed from eBay. The surcharge was removed from the auction text and the
iBook ad was ended early by eBay.

Are you thinking that the scammers are getting your
email address through E-Bay?
Are you using an email address as an e-bay user name?

No, I think they're contacting me through Ebay.

Unless your username is also your email address, they have to go through
eBay to contact you. If you receive spam that way which would include people
offering you off-eBay deals you can notify eBay. The person would have to
be a registered user and eBay would deal with them.
