feet

2006-01-27 Thread Peter Saint James

I lost one of the rubber feet to my Al Powerbook. The Applestore I
went to says it is not covered by AppleCare and want $7 for a piece
of rubber about the size of a bug pie.

Anyone have good luck improvising a foot for a Powerbook? What did
you use?

TIA

#1_ go to an apple store and ask if you can remove one from a demo unit (;-)

#2_ I found useful those small adhesive gel-plastic feet that are
used for the bottom of ornaments (to avoid scratches on the pieces of
furniture):

Anytime I've had that happen to equipment, I get some replacements at
Radio Shack--usually a bit bigger, but they stay on better--I either
replace or put side-to-side the remaining ones at the same time. I'm
less concerned with the cosmetics othe bottom of equipment than the
top. :)

I pulled the rubber feet out from under an old monitor I had and stuck
those on the bottom of my Lombard. It's ugly, but it works.

Hope this helps,

That's actually not a bad idea. If you're a frequent customer (or at
least a friendly one), some stores will be inclined to just spot you some of
the simple things here and there.

Back when I worked at this tech outfit a few years ago, my tower was
tipping side to side. Apparently /two/ of the feet had come off. I explained
to my VP that I need to place an order to overhaul the LRF Support on my
machine. He OK'd it without a second thought. When the envelope arrived
from Staples a couple of days later, he asked what's in that?

The LRF Support, I replied, knowing he was about to smack his
forehead.

But, those are... smacks forehead Little... Rubber... Feet. I can't
believe I just bought those for you -- keep up the good work!

I thought my 17 was down to 1 foot, but just checked and in fact I
don't have any left - I considered what to do for replacements a
while ago, when the first one disappeared, but inertia won, and in
fact I haven't found any downside to not having (as it turns out) any

Re: feet

2006-01-27 Thread David Rodriguez
One valuable aspect of having these feet is that they do provide a
small amount of airflow underneath if being used on a flat surface.
Simply keeping the bottom of the book from having direct contact with
a solid surface allows excess heat to escape. Some of the books
provide hardly any so if you are replacing, it might be worthwhile
finding some just a little taller then the originals.

A few weeks ago I noticed on ebay several people selling replacement
feet. Don't remember exactly where it was but some searching should
produce if you need them. I'm also going to be ordering a bunch of
feet (much larger) soon for a project so maybe I can buy some that
will fit most books too while I'm at it.

David and Anne--and a winking aside for Brian...

Go to www.allelectronics.com and search for feet (don't use their link to
Rubber Feet/Bumpers as it returns nothing). Feet will get you five
different items.

I used one of their small, clear feet (cat# RF-33); not quite perfect, but very
close. I just did a very careful, bevel-cut and they dropped right in. The
adhesive is very good on these feet.

Cat# RF-13 would be a perfect fit, but it is a press-fit foot (can you say that
three times fast?); if you have a good plastic/rubber glue, you could cut off
the small insert and just glue the foot in.

Put them on with crazy glue as explained by seller they even give you
an extra foot just in case. Look just like the Apple ones a year
later still look good.
Do a search for Powerbook feet under Apple Computer and it will come
up. I bought from Powerbookfootguy located in Seattle ,Washington.

I considered that (and considered mentioning it my post), but figured
(1) they're so small, and (2) the bottom of my PB doesn't seem as hot
as my Wallstreet anyway (go figure, I know the G4 is supposed to be
hot, but this is my experience), and (3) the aluminum conducts the
heat to the exposed surfaces, and (4) it's used lots on soft surfaces
so the feet don't matter anyway, so the heat isn't a big deal.

If I do decide to put feet back on, I'll grab some from my collection
of stick-on feet, but I really doubt I ever will.

I had lost 2-3 of my rubber feet. This past summer I had to send my

But I don't even like the rubber feet. I have my Pb on a piece of

Re: Pismo Rubber feet.

2003-11-21 Thread Clyde Kahrl
When I suggested a glue gun I was not trying to be facetious. Glue
guns are amazing things and you do not need a rubber foot underneath
them. As Phil suggested, the glue itself is the foot. You can
shape it any way you want--but I suggest not using your fingers to
shape the glue unless you are competing for the Gordon Liddy hall of
fame.

Can you get black glue? Yes you can. In fact there are gazillions
of glues that go into a glue gun--at different temperatures and for
different materials and with different textures. Here is a site
with inexpensive stuff and black glue.

http://www.hotstik.com/

If you need a gun, get their inexpensive 2-temperature gun--the
hotter the glue the better it sticks (but the harder it is to work
with. Believe it or not, the dent-pulling glue really works and
is used by professionals (like my wife). It is also vastly superior
to caulking in the bath.
WARNING: Fixing things with glue guns can become an obsession.

Pismo Rubber feet.

2003-11-20 Thread Frank Cornew
As reported previously, I've used round, hemispherical clear
feet/bumperws from the hardware store for some time and prefer them
over the original black feet. (They should look better than a glop of
hot glue.) Nonetheless, give it a try. For those that insist on a
black foot, is hot glue available in black? The feet may also be
available in black, as well - I've seen black square feet, not round
ones. Square feet would definitely look nasty.

Relative to the black feet, they stay put way longer, grip my
inclined workstation far better, and put a bit more space between the
Pismo and the desk for ventilation. It is possible to find these
things in the exact size of the recesses that the old black feet fit
in. For longer lasting results and appearance, I recommend you clean
out vestiges of the old stickum out of the recesses first. GooGone?

I replaced all of the black feet during my first year of ownership of
the Pismo in 2000. Only two have come off since then, and probably
due to being bumped/scraped directly. The originals seemed to peel
off if the PB was slid across a reasonably grippy surface.

May replace them all again as they have yellowed and are a bit
scuffed. Think the originals were 3M brand - other brands may or may
not adhere as well. YMMV.

Think this issue has been beaten to death, but carry on if you wish.

Problem is that not all of us have managed to KEEP the feet that have
fallen out. I lost a couple on our local bus system, which means they
are gone for good. He is looking for ways to replace feet lost in this

I think Clyde WAS answering your question. Ever used a glue gun? You
can certainly push a nice glop of glue out onto any surface the glue
used maintains a high degree of viscosity yet harders to a nice rubbery
feel. It's a great solution and one I plan on testing.

Pismo rubber feet

2003-11-17 Thread Frank Cornew
Dunno.
Have been using the clear feet from the hardware store for some time
and prefer them. They stay put way longer, grip my inclined
workstation far better, and put a bit more space between the Pismo
and the desk for ventilation. It is possible to find these things in
the exact size of the recesses that the old black feet fit in. For
longer lasting results and appearance, I recommend you clean out
vestiges of the old stickum out of the recesses first. GooGone?

The inclined workstation is actually a music stand that was probably
meant to be used on top of a grand piano. At any rate, it is smooth,
but the book stays put. Great ventilation, ergonomic and very
elegant. I'd pay $30 for a stand like this, not the feet.

F.

Hi.
Please share with me what is the racket going on with
replacing the powerbook rubber feet for a Pismo? I've visited at
least three websites where they are trying to sell replacement
stick-on rubber feet for close to $20. The lowest price at one site
wanted $10 for the strip of four black stick-on rubber feet but then
their shipping and handling was $10. This is insane since the weight
isn't even listed because it does not register on most postal scales.
Yup, you guessed it a first class no. 10 envelope for thirty seven
cents and away they go.
So as a temporary measure I went to Home Depot and purchased
clear stick-on cabinet door bumpers 3/8 package of twenty for $2.
The thickness is greater but I'm testing the first one to see if it
stays on.
Does anyone else have a suggestion for a reasonably priced
source of black powerbook feet?
Thanks

Go to a framing shop (picture framing) they sell various colours
of rubber bumpers to keep pictures from scratching walls... come in
different sizes... might fit the bill...

Had a funny thing happen with my new (to me) Lombard... had left it
plugged in and when i came home it wouldn't boot/start when i pushed
the power button... nothing... unplugged it...popped out the battery
and it fired up... it was warm on the bottom. Does one not leave the
unit plugged in after the battery has charged? Would it have been the
heat?

thanks all

Re: Pismo rubber feet

2003-11-15 Thread Dwight Hines
Yes, hie thee down to your local WalMart or Dollar General and tell them you
want the little round stickum pads they put under furniture. They are
called Grippers and they are made by FloorKing. They will have them in
black or white and in packages of 6 or 8 or 12. The sizes will vary from a
diameter larger than a dime to about the diameter of a silver dollar. I am
using two 1/2 inch pads at each corner of my Pismo. The height keeps my
Pismo nice and cool and for the past few years has avoided all irritation
and discomfort in my wrists and hands. I think there is some ergonomic
value in having the Pismo at the right height for you, so for $2.95 a
package, you can experiment. The pads last about 2 years for me, so you
might want to let your local Mac group know you have them.

In repairing a Flat-panel iMac, I once broke the clear plastic bezel

the glue bonding... but I tested on another section and it was just the

now, i always test krazy glue on a throw-away piece before applying it

Little rubber feet

2003-06-09 Thread Meg St. Clair
One of the little rubber feet fell off of my PB 12. I have the piece. How
should I stick it back on? I really don't want to send the whole thing back
to Apple (which is what they wanted me to do when I had lost one of the
little screws in the lid, which luckily, I found again). The rubber piece
appears to have a little nub on it which fits into a little indentation in
the computer. That doesn't seem very secure. Would krazy glue be a really
bad idea?

I am on digest mode so please pardon the butchering of headers.

Any how I would try double sided tape, available at your local telemetry
unit...just sneak into the hospital and ask if you can have some of that
tape they use for EKG printouts.

Or you get it elsewhere like a hardware store (used for sticking carpets,
etc)

I used rubber cement on my PB G3 Bronze. If I'm not mistaken, I believe
that to be what was originally used. Seems to work pretty well for me.

Hmm. I hadn't thought of that. For some reason, it appeals to me more than
krazy glue. Don't know why. There is no visible evidence of adhesive on
either the foot or the computer itself.

Pismo rubber feet, WAS I'm back...

2002-07-26 Thread Tim Gilman

What is worse than incessant advertising is incessant bickering.
 How about a ceasefire?

I second that motion.

In other news; I went to my local hardware store and picked up a box of
3/8 inch self-adhesive rubber feet for my pismo (I had one left, out of
four). They're clear plastic and almost perfect little hemispheres.
Even with the old rubber feet, I used to be able to push my laptop
across tables with little effort. Now it seems I might as well have
just glued my laptop onto my desk.

Trackpad into rubber feet

2002-07-17 Thread Frank Cornew

Clear plastic self stick feet are great replacements for the original
black rubber feet that peel off and get lost so easily. Think 3M
makes them. Available at hardware stores. Bouncy like rubber and they
grip about as well so the book doesn't slide off of inclined
surfaces, yet will slide without extreme force. (My pismo lives on an
inclined music stand from a piano or organ. Neat way to ventilate
under the book and raise it off the desk surface to imporve
ergonomics) The feet are available in the exact size to fit the
recess where the old feet fit.

After managing to not lose and reglue the original feet with various
sticky substances I discovered that the clear self stick feet stayed
put longer. Just clean out the recess where they mount real well
before installing them.

Any comment from other Pismo owners?

I bought my Pismo/500 when they first came out, and I've had no problems
at all (except the key-impressions on the screen). The only bad thing
is, she's missing three of her rubber feet. I use my PowerBook
everyday. She's on for 10 hours a day, survives a ride to and from work
in the basket on the front of my bicycle, and is pretty much
continuously streaming audio during the day.

All I did was add ram (384 total), and replace the disk drive. I can't
say enough good things about the IBM 40GN harddrives. I got me one of
the 30 GB versions, and it so nice and quiet, it makes using my laptop
on a quiet day possible.

Oh no! My little rubber feet are missing from the bottom of my powerbook!!!

2002-07-17 Thread Frank Cornew

As mentioned a few posts back, I've had success finding clear 'not
quite hemispherical' self stick plastic feet (made by 3M?) that fit
perfectly in the recesses in the Pismo. I finally lost an original
foot despite several experiments with different glues and ended up
replacing all of them with the clear feet. They are available at
hardware stores and have far outlasted the originals and resist
sliding quite well.

And I have been ignoring all those posts on some list I can't even remember
that told you where to get substitutes. Right now I'm using four
wintergreen lifesavers in their individual wrappers and it is working well
on a very flat desk but don't think they will last and they are slippery so
I have to anchor my arms below the wrist on the edge of the desk and then
stretch my fingers up to the key and this is no way to live.

Oh where oh Where do I find the substitute, or surrogate, little rubber
feet? Please, oh please, before I get reverse carpal tunnel syndrome.

PowerBook rubber feet overview

2002-05-02 Thread Dennis SCP

While I'm at it, I know that this list has already discussed the topic of
Powerbooks' rubber feet, but I seem to have lost those messages. Can anybody
point me to a suitable replacement set of feet and/or reliable adhesive? My
Pismo lost all its rubber feet some time ago, and I sort of miss them. (It
slides easily and the bottom's getting all scratched up.)

Here they are:

***

My Ti-400 is always loosening a screw - usually the one nearest the AC
adaptor socket. I suspect the large heat/cool range is at fault. Any
fixes out there? Also, I lose rubber feet (including that one) which
means desk scratches when I don't notice the screw coming out again.
Are the feet available?

***

Apple has them available, as does (i think) pbparts.com. Apple mailed me
some just a few weeks ago.

Here's what I did, after getting the idea from having the same problem
on my PB G3 (Firewire):

take a small piece of sand paper or a key and scour the inside of the
little hole the foot goes into. then, use some sort of glue (I used
Rubber Cement in -very- small quantities) on the adhesive side of the
foot. insert foot and it should stay in longer. On my Firewire, the
feet never came off again. We'll see about the TiBook.

Also, I heartily recommend the CoolPad Podium by RoadTools, which solved
the screw loosening for me. The podium raises the rear of the Powerbook
for better airflow. After I installed an extra 128MB RAM, my fan would
kick on about 3 times a day after getting the Podium, it hasn't
kicked on at all.

***

There are commercial products (like Loctite®) to discourage threaded
connections from loosening, but a little rubber cement under the screw
head (and touching the top few threads) might also do the trick.

Wallmart or any decent hobby store ought to have these by the boatload,
any size your want. To borrow a line from a potato chip
commercial... You won't be able to get just one. ;-)

***

someone mentioned that replacement rubber feet could be found at Home
Depot, or some such place. Anyone remember?

***

What works better than the feet is that foam rubber web stuff that's
used to line your kitchen cupboards with. I just place a piece of that
on the table that I'm using my 'book on, and the 'book's cord can be
yanked right out the back and the 'book doesn't even budge. A .99 (or
thereabout) roll of it at WalMart is good for about 10 pieces...

***

Try Loctite brand adhesives. . . . . kinda like crazy glue, but better,
if you use the surface insensitive type. Do a search for it at:
www.mcmaster.com

But IMHO, I wouldn't want something that would stick too well, because
that would usually mean destroying or discoloring the surface of your
Powerbook. I'd rather have something I can replace without incident
every few weeks.

***

Okay, Gene and everybody - I still have my four feet, but would like to
find an adhesive which will keep the rubber feet/circles on for longer
than a month or two. Any help on that? If it's available at my local
Radio Shack, please post specific type/model # for the glue stuff...

***

I just use some round self-stick plastic bumpers that come on a sheet.
They are usually used for the corners of pictures you hang on the wall
or on cupboard doors. My mom found a couple of sheets at a garage sale.
I don' t know where you can buy them, but any hardware store is a good
bet.

Hi - I've been watching this thread with some amusement - me of the
controlled slide persuasion. The well known torsional creakness of
Lombard has long pushed me toward carousels or even magazines as
adjustable platforms that you can slide any which way to adjust your
access to the kb/screen. Enough of! rolling off the rubber pads with
their annoyingly powerful stiction. One exception - when perching ol'
Lommie atop a stereo or whatever with dangling entanglements for the
errant foot a firmer grip makes a little sense (although a good yank
will put it on the floor anyway).

Maybe Apple should introduce the equivalent of locking casters.
