Woody I agree with Caleb! Mozilla 1.2.1 works with uploading pics to Ebay's pic hosting. It also works with my online banking and Paypal. 3 issues I did extensive testing this past summer with all the OS 9 compatible browsers out there. I am using OS 9.2.2 and use this browser on a daily basis, without any issues. Try it with your OS 9.1 macs...if you can upgrade to OS 9.2.2. I have an iPhoto question but since its on my TiBook I thought you experts could help me. Is there a way to make fotos smaller? I am trying to email pics and they come out huge. of course cropping does not change the size of them. The help section in iphoto is no help By the way have been using my tibook is my only computer for a year now and am very happy with except for rendering time for Video which is dog slow on my 3 year old 867. Oh well Thanks in advance. TmB Just select the photos that you want to send and hit the Email icon in iPhoto. It will ask what size you want. It is that easy. Welcome to the club. I have had a Lombard for the last few months with a bad L2 Cache. I have been running 10.3.9 quite satisfactorily however. I would suppose it would run slower with a bad La Cache? Do you have a feel for that, or is this not really relevant to speed? cheers, gianfranco Mine's got a 400 mhz so I'm not expecting super speeds, but it really doesn't seem to be running slow either considering. In the few months I've had it, the machine has frozen twice but I think that related to the machine getting too hot. I've dealt with that issue however. Most likely, I will be a real estate agent by the end of the summer. I am required to have a computer that will run the required software. The office is checking now with their computer people to see if there are Mac versions of the software, but at this point they've never had an agent to use Macs. I, on the other hand, have never used anything else. Occasionally I've turned my sons' computers off, and even less occasionally I've gotten online on their computers, etc. My husband had a Gateway laptop years ago, and we tried to get Via Voice to work for him. Other than that, I really haven't used Windows computers at all. I've had Macs since I bought my Centris 610 in 1993. Back to the real estate question: Most of the computer time will be online, but there are two programs that I'll need to install and run on my computer. Which emmulation programs have you folks had the best success regarding running Windows software on your Macs? I have the 17 PowerBook 1.5 GHz with max RAM. Re: Subject: powerbooks, ibooks, g4, g5, what to buy?
Hello All... I'm a newbie to this list, but have been a Mac User since way back :) Your list was recommended I currently do print and web design work ... Photoshop, Quark, Dreamweaver, Flash, Indesign, Illustrator, Acrobat, etc. I do mostly web design right now, and am moving also into the high-res, large-scale print development (booth displays, etc), so my Mac is definitely not a recreational machine :) Sometimes my work is processor intensive (running PS/AI with extremely large print pieces), sometimes it's not :) All depends on what I'm working on ... I'm also interested in getting into some amature video editing (mostly home digital movies - slapping some videos together with some titles, etc, nothing too big). If you are already using PS, Qu, DW, FL, InD, AI, etc., and you plan to get into amateur video, I'm guessing that it won't be long before you are doing more than amateur video. I would recommend, based on the book _Final Cut Express 2_ by Tom Wolsky, that you also purchase an additional external hard drive in addition to whatever computer you purchase. I have a philosophy about upgrading computers, but it really depends on if you have the money to do this: buy the biggest, best, and fastest of the current technology. Next year's best software might be maxing out this year's middle-category hardware. Plan to get any needed peripherals, bells, and whistles while everything is compatible. Technology seems to advance exponentially, so in buying hardware look ahead to the needs of the software you'll be buying. Max out the RAM, so that it won't be a factor later on, especially if you're going to do video. I saved $400 by getting my 2 GB of RAM from newegg or something like that, as recommended by Laurent. In 1993, we bought a Centris 610, and we s-l-o-w-l-y added this and that. We just couldn't afford to do it any other way. There was always something that wasn't quite maximized for something else. By the time I got the music software I wanted, for example, my computer was not as powerful as the software could handle. That was my main computer until 2001. If you enjoy getting under the hood and tweaking, then get a big dog tower. If you think you will enjoy being able to grab 'n' go with your computer, get a PowerBook. If you're getting advice from a salesman, make sure he has a Mac. Supposedly, they are all trained and know what they are talking about, but only those who HAVE a Mac of their own really know what they are talking about. (Our CompUSA has only one employee that has Macs.) Also, their current inventory will strongly dictate which computer they think you need. If you told us that you were going to build your life around iLife, then maybe a middle-range model would work, but you are already using the power apps, and with your growing interest in video, you'll probably be editing in Final Cut Pro before you know it. I have to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed my 17 PowerBook. At first I felt a little embarrassed pulling it out all the time to take notes at meetings, at ball games to update the games scores on the website, at gatherings where I knew I'd be taking a lot of photos, etc. But the versatility soon overtook my fear of appearing ostentatious. My PowerBook's screen is much bigger than most t.v. screens built into cars nowadays, and the cassette adaptor sends the sound through the speakers, so it's the best for watching movies on long road trips. I can close my PowerBook, head to a meeting, arrive and open it, and it's already on with (still) nearly a full battery. And there I can refer to emails received, photos taken, songs that would be appropriate for this and that, here's so-and-so's phone number, sure I can burn that song/those photos/the footage of the ballgame for you if you have a disk handy and it goes on and on. When I get home, I don't have to transfer anything to my computer, because it's already there! My to-do list is ready to go! The more versatile it becomes, the lighter it becomes! I know that this might horrify some folks, but I usually don't even put it in a computer briefcase if I'm taking it somewhere locally. It fits very well under the middle seat of my vehicle, in case I need to leave it in there. I never put it on top of anything, in case I have to hit the brakes. However, when everything is stored, it ALL has a place in my computer briefcase. One other thing I've done is buy an extra power cable. One stays plugged in at my desk and one stays plugged in at my nightstand. I also got a LaCie FireWire 800 external HD, since I couldn't back up the PowerBook to the iMac (HD is smaller) or the iMac to the PowerBook (I don't want Classic on the PB). (I still have these silly ideas of one day dusting off the Centris and backing up all of the floppies, but if I do, I'll need to resubscribe to the Quadlist...) I got the FireWire 800 because that Final Cut book
Re: Subject: Windows Wireless on a Mac Network
Anybody using a Windows98 notebook on a Apple ABS (wireless) network? I'd like a recommendation on a dependable WiFi 803.11b PC card for the Windows machine. Oh, I'm using the ABS dial-up modem if that matters, Thanks, Bob Dependable is the key word, there. My son and I were both using a Linksys wireless router to connect my PowerBook and his Windows laptop. We both had trouble, usually identical, simultaneous problems. Our ISP replaced a router, our phone company changed out lines in the alley, etc. (multiple problems played into our bad DSL connection). Finally, I replaced the Linksys with an Airport Extreme. My wireless connection was much improved, but sometime in this process unbeknown to us, his wireless card had quit working. We're waiting for a new card under his warrantee. - - Claire -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Subject: Windows Wireless on a Mac Network
I have a Gateway and Dell desktop hooked up with this Pismo and an iMac SE 400 and Airport base (Graphite)...Initially tried a Nextel card in the W systems but it just wouldn't work...Switched to the Belkin cards and they took off immediately and are working fine together with the Macs. The Nextel cards just wouldn't see the ABS but the Belkin hooked on instantly. I have Verizon DSL running to the ABS then out. HTH Mike Mike, do you have the Verizon DSL going to a modem first and then to the ABS then out? We have DSL from the wall to the DSL provider's modem, then to a router, then to (1) an iMac, (2) two PC towers, (3) the Airport Extreme. I haven't connected a printer yet. I guess it has to go into the Airport Extreme, but then do the PCs and the iMac have a connection? Claire -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... hey guys my daughter and I have older powerbooks and were wondering since we do not have usb 2.0, can we still use the new shuffle or would it be too slow in just regular usb or do we get a adapter or what? thanks in advance TmB I've tried twice to send this, and it bounced. I was cutting/pasting info from Apple's website, and the font/size/color were different, so that probably caused the bounce. So I'll just give general info here. Go to apple.com. Click on the iPod Shuffle graphic. Close to the bottom of that page, you'll see a paragraph titled, Plug-and-Playlists. That will answer your question. There's a footnote with it as well. I hope someone can help me. I have a just-over-one-year-old (of course) 17 G4 PowerBook with a SuperDrive. After a year of working flawlessly, reading and burning all brands of CD and DVD, yesterday I went to put in a blank CD to backup some data with Toast, and got an unhappy surprise: the disk went in fine, but then the drive clunked twice, and spat the disk out. I tried several other disks -- commercial, self-burned, DVD -- same trick every time: full pull-in insert, two big clunks and disk eject. I reset PRAM, NVRAM, and the PMU, did the Force Quit, Force Shutdown, Control-Command-Power start -- all the Apple remedies. I'm currently trying to find my original Hardware Diagnostic disks, but if the drive won't accept any other disks, I'm justifiably concerned that it won't accept the diagnostic disks either. Apple support quoted me a replacement drive price of around $1000 (minus labor), and that' doesn't make me too happy. Any suggestions/previous experience/mantras, etc.? Any help greatly appreciated. Oh yeah... I forgot to mention that I'm running OS 9.2.2. So I've adjusted the memory usage per app, as suggested. What about using a ram disk (not virtual disk) for browser cache, and have the ram disk saved on shut down? Wouldn't that speed up web browsing? What about using virtual memory? There are a lot of different opinions on this topic, and I'd love to hear some from this group. Thanks! My wife and I primarily use this 'book for web browsing, e-mail, and working with MS Office. Should I use a virtual disk for browser cache? What about increasing the memory usage on these particular apps? Should I turn virtual memory back on? I would be very grateful for any suggestions you may have. I take it you are using OS 9. In most cases you won't see any change unless you increase the memory allocation for each application. Click on the application in Finder, goto the File Menu, select Get Info then select Memory. The bottom number, the Preferred memory allocation determines how much memory the program normally uses. Re: Subject: lombard bronze restart
Namely, it isn't booting from powered off state? If so, check to see that your battery is seated properly in the bay. Try wiggling your battery around a bit, make sure it is pushed into the bay snugly and latched. For a restart from hung state, where CMND + CTRL + PWR isn't doing the trick, try push and hold power key, about five seconds, then release. I have seen CMND + CTRL + PWR not work a few times, but fairly rare. Notably on a 7200/90, and more recently on my sisters Blueberry iBook. However, pushing, holding, then releasing, the case mounted power button will (ungracefully) do the trick, and should always work. Subject: Lombard L2 failure, was Re: Lombard cooling fan
Does anyone know what the determining factors are for the cooling fan in a Lombard to run? What controls it? How to test it? The reason I'm asking is that my Lombard 333 (O/C'd to 433) with 512 MB running X.3.2 has been running at 100% CPU and heavy disk and CD activity for about an hour now and the fan has yet to come on even for a second. I lifted out the keyboard and the heat sink is uncomfortable to touch, especially over the CPU. I realize that this suggests that the heat is being removed from the CPU, hopefully effectively, but I'm concerned that it is getting too warm. Now that I've had the keyboard open for a few minutes while writing this (I have an external keyboard connected), the heat sink is noticeably cooler. This really makes me wonder if my fan should be running... I've also never heard the fan of my Lombard 333 coming on in 4 and half years of daily intensive use. Hopefully it's not progressively frying up in the process. I seem to recall there is a procedure to test the fan at startup, though, sort of forcing it on with a key combo maybe? Anyone? cheers, gianfranco -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Subject: Re: RAM needed for OS X on Lombard
I was thinking about getting a 256 and using it with my 128 for a total of 384. Think that would be enough? And I'm sure this problem has been discussed before, but I have heard often that any more than 256 megs of RAM in a Lombard causes problems with OS X. Should this still be a concern, or has it been fixed by 10.3.2? That's exactly the configuration I have upgraded my Lombard 333 to (from 192 MB), getting a low profile 256 MB for the bottom slot from OWC when installing OS X.2.3 (now upped to X.2.8). Install was successful, but not at the first shot. I got twice the funky screen patterns, once more it just stalled. Once succeeding however (fourth try), I could re-install a few more times flawlessly. A mistery to me. For the record, I was not able to even initiate the install process the stock4 GB HD, but I succeeded by upgrading to a 40 GB 5200rpm Travelstar. I recall mentions of opposite experiences on this list. It runs fine (and by far more stable) under OS X, but not half as fast as under OS 9.2.2, specially when using many apps at a time as I do. Special concerns (in my case) are very slow Finder actions, terribly long apps launching time, slow window scrolling and Mail annoyingly long deadtimes (even when it is the only application running). Plus, I lost use of the internal modem under OS X. Word processing is fine, forget image and sound editing/processing, way faster under OS 9. Perhaps 512 MB of RAM would improve on all of the above. On the bright side (and most importantly), software installations and configurations, peripheral support, external hardware compatibilyty and so on are vastly improved. Having heard repeatedly that Panther is faster, you'll be better off than me. I'll give it a shot myself. Perhaps I'll re-gain the modem as well. Hope this helps. Hi there! I'm having a serious problem with my Pismo. I tried to wake it from sleep this morning but got nothing. When I tried to wake my Pismo from sleep this morning, the pulsating sleep light stopped pulsating, but the screen stayed off and nothing started on the Pismo. It did the same thing yesterday evening when running off the battery. It went to sleep by itself, but didn't wake up as usual when I pressed a key. Yesterday evening, a Command-Control-Power did restart the machine, but this morning, that won't work. I tried resetting the PMU on the back, waited 5 seconds, but nothing. The only sign that the laptop is not completely dead is the Caps Lock and the Num Lock keys. If I press one of those, they lit up, but that's all what it will do. Any suggestion? I need my Pismo! I have been given charge of upgrading a Wallstreet. I have already upped the memory to 384 MB's. I have installed a new HD, a 30 GB Travelstar, and partitioned it for OS X. I have installed OS 9.2.1 and am working on installing OS X, but I have run into problems with in OS X install. It hangs about half way through the disc 1 install. A couple of times I was prompted upon inserting the OS X disc, to initialize or eject it because the disc was not readable by Mac OS. Is there some secret I need to know about in doing the installation? Is it a problem with the disc? I did install it without a hitch on this computer's original 4 GB HD, but 4 GB's just doesn't give enough space for storage after putting the OS and the desired programmes on it. Suggestions? Laurence: Don't know the answer to your question; however, I'd recommend simply purchasing a new screen on ebay (~$100) and then you'll have two machines.. or, you could sell the intact Wallstreet and walk away with some cash. In the last few days, my Lombard screen has started to fade whether on battery or not. Colors become almost indistinguishable or are at best pastels, and black outlines around icons (for example) appear almost like dotted lines. Re: On the subject of 802.11 devices...
The DWL-120e, MA101 and Belkin pods are all Atmel-based and all work with the same atmel-wlan driver under Linux. I was hoping there was a generic MacOS USB-WLAN driver too :( Some third party adapters are supported by Apple's (public source??) driver. Only the PCMCIA ones. Seems nobody wants to support USB WLANs on Macintosh because everyone [worth bothering about] who has a USB portable system has an Airport slot. You could save a few dollars over buying a supported product and spend man-weeks adding support for your device ;-). Mmm.. yeah :) I don't know I have any man-weeks to spare. The only thing is, I already have all these pods in my desk drawer, so they are a sunk cost. (We bought them for compatibility testing with a product we make that has a USB port for WLAN connectivity; that's how I know what chipsets they are and what drivers they use under Linux). -- Lewin A.R.W. Try http://wirelessdriver.sourceforge.net/. for card drivers Hmm, unforrt I think D-Link lists their pod as Mac compatible, go to their site and there's a page of Mac compatible products. The unit I have is the DWL-120e (silver flip case, looks rather like a cellphone), it has no MacOS drivers on D-Link's site. WUSB12 sounds like a Linksys number. They don't like Macs. Yes, it's Linksys. I also have Netgear MA101 (no drivers on their site), a couple of Belkin adapters (no drivers on their site). Also, if you happen to travel a lot, the ability to have access anywhere, independently of your ISP is handy, and also, should you think you will be changing ISPs anytime, using a third-party email address removes the need to ask everybody to change their address book, as well as the potential for people to lose touch with you. Between these three options, all my needs are met. As Mac users, we also have the option of a dotMac account, which, while more expensive, also gives these options, and much more. Bill, My Pismo came with 9.0.4. But I use 9.2.3 (the latest update) regularly and it's fine. I don't know if it would boot with anything earlier than 9.0.4. Looking at Apple's tech specs, they say the Original SSW was 9.0 (not just 9). So I suspect it *ought* to boot off any version of 9. Maybe Kyle has something a bit more definite on this point. --Jim. Not OS9.02 or OS9.04, etc, just OS9.0. I can't seem to boot the Pismo from this disk at all and have begun to wonder if Pismo needs something slightly higher than just 9.0? That was a turn-off as I'd always modified data, or feared that I had, on each Mac. But I tried it on on Palm. To test, I put a unique character in each of two matching records, and synched, expecting to lose at least one of them. But Voila! Now each volume sported two new records - created especially to preserve its correspondent with the added character - as well as backups of the un-charactered record on each volume. Now it's left up to me to delete what I determine to be superfluous. That's the way it works on Palm - better than back-up. But I have no idea about Mac. What's the deal? Re: Subject: Wallstreet power problem
Getting to the heatsink on a Wallstreet isnt difficult, but it is more work than would be on a TiBook. 1) Remove Both bay devices 2) Release the keyboard latches located in the bays (one in each) 3) Flip the keyboard over onto the trackpad to reveal the 'guts' of the wallstreet 4) remove a philips head screw located in the middle of a metal panel (there may be a second screw holding this panel in The wallstreet's HS was originally attached by a thermal pad (think styrofoam) if this pad has disintegrated and is no longer attached to the processor, you will probably want to find an alternative method of attaching the sink. Also, you said you reset the PRAM, i had strange problems with my wallstreet when the PRAM battery died. It would only boot on AC power the first time and then you could shut it off and restart on battery if you desired, but if you lost battery power at all (ie, if the battery went to 0% or was removed) you would have to reattach to AC to restart it. The reason I mention this is because when first started on AC power, the fan would activate and go through a more lengthy startup procedure than normal. The fix for this was buying a new PRAM battery. In summary I would check: 1) The heatsink 2) The PRAM battery 3) CPU card contact Sorry for being so lengthy -Andrew -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... So even if they tell you now that it's not something that requires a repair, they will have it on record that you called about it. This way, should you have any problems directly related to this in the future, it will be on record, and they can't say that the damage occurred through misuse or abuse. Make sure you make note of the case number and get the tech person's name and number. -Mark -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I'm hoping that all of you with snow iBooks can help me with a possible problem. I bought a refurbished iBook 600MHz (Dual USB). Everything about it is fine, except the AC adapter jack on the side. It is slightly angled, so the adapter jack when plugged in points a couple degrees toward the front of the iBook. I don't know if this is a common problem, or even a design point. RE;this may not be related to your problem, but do notebook series have a pram battery? Hello all, I've got a Wallstreet 300mhz running 10.2. When putting it to sleep, and then picking it up by the left(battery) side, (I'm left handed) it shuts off. The only way to get it started again is to use the shift+fn+power button and then press the power button and it starts into 9.2, every time, it never restarts into 10. Anyone have any ideas on why, or has had(or have) this problem? Thanks in advance. Best, John -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Okay - I am new here to the G-Books page and probably asking an old question. But I just bought a great little Pismo 400 with 320 RAM, open box - new (no warranty) from CompUSA. Everything seemed to work fine for a couple of months until a couple days ago. Anywho the LG CD-ROM/DVD won't recognize CD's and the System profiler in OS X.2.2 crashes everytime I take a look at the drive specs. If I run the hardware test I get it to read 1 CD and then it stops again. Are there driver's posted fro these GoldStar CD/DVD drives that enable them to be more reliable? I see a lot of postings on Apple's web support pages but everyone basically says too bad or that's a bummer but no answers. The rest of the machine runs like a dream - just no i tunes or the like. Everything seems fine, but I can't do a restart ever. It looks like it's going to restart, the screen goes black, but then nothing. I can still hear the hard drive spinning. Mine foes crazy too from time to time, but then I stop using two hands on the trackpad/button and it is good. I have the same problem on my Pismo. I think I even posted about that problem some time ago. I think, in my case, that there is somehow an OS X bug. When I plug the Ethernet wire at home, after a little while, the trackpad becomes crazy. Like I try to move the cursor, and the trackpad detects repetitive clicks. At that point, the only thing I can do is to press the power button to bring the dialog offering to restart, shutdown, sleep or cancel. Then, pressing Tab until the restart button is selected and then return. Yesterday, when it was starting to drive me crazy, I did switch to AirPort and the problem went away. I switched back to Ethernet and everything was still fine. When I'm at the office, I use also Ethernet and never had any problem. I must mention that at home, I have fast Ethernet (100Mbit) while at the office, I have regular Ethernet. It must also be pointed out that AirPort is 11 Mbit (I think). So, is the speed of the network the cause, or is there something else? I don't know. Oh, I use the trackpad for everything, from moving the cursor to drag to drag lock and click. Wow! No USB port on the 850? I've got a Stylus Color 740 and it has all three: PC serial, USB, and Apple printer port. Plus the drivers were built into OS X (*I consider myself lucky*) Have you tried the obvious yet: 1. Go to Print Center (hope/pray permissions aren't screwed up so you can launch it), 2. Select Printers and View Printer List, 2a. If it's not listed there, Click Add Printer and go to 'USB' or 'Epson USB' (depending on the driver), add it there, and that should do it. Make sure that's unchecked. With being cut off... I don't know about other states, but in Texas, the phone company is only required to provide customers with data throughput at 14,400bps. If your line can sustain that, as far as the phone company is concerned, your line is good. Sometimes setting you modem script to Apple Internal 56K (v.34) will alleviate connection issues, as it more-or-less drops you down to 33.6Kbps but enables more error correction protocols, usually offering a more stable connection. There are also many 3rd party modem scripts that claim to do the same but maintain a 56K connection. Unfortunately, I haven't found any that work for me.
