Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then?

2007-04-08 Thread shaun everiss
I have jumped in, a load of my computers didn't always start with accessible
manuals or training.
Here it goes.
crash, reformat, learn something.
Crash, reformat and then realise that the problem I am trying to fix is already
under my nose I just need to configure.
Crash then discover that my recovery cds are busted, so need to replace those.
Crash, but then find the main board on the system is dead so no point.
Crash, reformat, and decide that since I need to reformat I may as well upgrade
and spend cash.
That was what its been like with me.
its only in the last few years that I have actually mastered the system enough.
With my testing, there is a bit of crashing going on, but if its bad enough, I
push a code and my yesterday's ghost restores overnight and I am back up and
running, plus with the 320gb external usb2 drive I don't really worry about
losing data as I access most from this drive.

do you think i should put any sort of learn game sounds in bomb blaster?
currently there isn't one but if people want it it's easily added, but
through my understanding on what i've just read people aren't really
 bothered about such a menu.

2007-04-08 Thread damien c. sadler - head of x-sight interactive
what do you guys think about sound encryption? i don't know what to make of
it. most developers are encrypting sounds left right and centre, free game
or not, and as i'm only just starting i don't know how's the right way to go
about it. i don't want to look like some paranoid security freak but then
again i know that most of the mainstream games sounds are encrypted or
packed up or something.

2007-04-08 Thread Charles Rivard
This is exactly why, when a question comes up about how to do something in a
game, particularly when the game has been released within the last 2 days or
so, I tell the one asking to look in the manual. The answer is right there.
That is all they really need to know, and I have not given anything away,
either.

[Audyssey] vista question

2007-04-08 Thread Don Voyles
Hi Tom!

Do you have an A drive or 3.5 disk drive in your computer? If, you do did
you know that you should be able to make a dos boot up disk which you could
boot up your computer in dos mode without any vista systems in memory, etc.
A friend of mine has vista and the ability to make a dos disk but he does
not have a 3.5 drive to make one. So, I am assuming that a person could make a
dos boot up disk if they had a 3.5 disk drive installed in their vista computer.
I discovered that with x p home I could make a dos boot up disk then boot
up the computer off the A drive to run some of my dos programs instead of
trying to run off windows dos.
I have been told so many times that a person could not run dos with a
computer with x p home on the computer. But, when a person boots up in dos with
a disk made from x p home or any fairly recent dos boot up disk like from
windows 98 boot up dos disk there is no problem.

Blessings!

Hi ian.

I tend to use the left arrow get close to the left side of the game where
the left cliffs are and hit r to turn on my chest detector. If the arrows
are flying i tend to keep the left control depressed so that the guy is
always ducking while moving around and picking up chests.

Its very good once you get the hang of it.

Hi Shaun,
STFC 1.0 uses .NET 2.0 not 1.1. That was one of the last builds before I
lost the source so I had just converted to .NET 2.x.
As for dxwebsetup.exe I have the latest one downloaded and have applied
it to Raceway and Monty, but haven't uploaded it for STFC player's yet.

Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then?

2007-04-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Niko,
I certainly can not speak for every PC game out there, but in my
experience games have had documentation in one form or another to help a
player learn. For example, Star Trek Elite Force which I have installed
came with a nice professionally done manual in html which covered all
sorts of topics on menu structure, common keyboard commands, etc... This
is just common sense. It also comes with a nice readme.txt which
announces possible bug issues, latest revisions, and where to get
updates, etc.
I can't imagine a big game company just let you buy a game and giving
you no clues how to play. Perhaps some players choose to jump in and
play without reading first, but they are in my experience the first to
complain when something doesn't happen they expect which was discussed
at length in some manual or readme file.
A great example here is STFC. While I had solvdd the bug related to the
crash after installation months ago I am still amazed how many requests
I get on and off list about that one error, and when I ask them did you
read the frequently asked questions section on my site they answer no I
did not. I half the time wonder why bother writing it up at all if
people aren't going to take five seconds and look something up in the
documentation before asking.
I'm going to be shipping a text copy of the faq with every game I write
from now on and if they don't read it, well, heaven help them if they
can't read something before asking about something that is explained
step by step right on their system.

Re: [Audyssey] game sounds menu - Re: bomb blaster then?

2007-04-08 Thread Thomas Ward

I am jumping in on this rather late, but generally I think some sort of
sound describing feature is necessary for many audio games. Not every
sound is obvious what it's function is for or what it does.
For example, in GMA Tank Commander it is helpful to here what the
correct targeting pitches are for a good solution ahead of time before
playing the game, and finding out which enemy tank is which by it's
engine noises.
In Monty for example there are two different types of platforms you will
encounter. There is the vanishing platforms that have a sort of UFO
sound to them, and the warp platform which has it's own sound. A player
who had never played before would certain like to know ahead of time
which is which. Vanishing platforms are tricky as you have to time your
jumps onto them just right or you will die a wonderful death when they
vanish on you. Warp platforms willwarp you up[ a level or take you some
place else on the level.

Re: [Audyssey] Open letter to Dungeon Master, John

2007-04-08 Thread Yvonne Alaniz
Hi Everyone,
I have attended a session of John's group and enjoyed what I heard. The
only thing that might be a hinderance is that the group is already very
large. I like to play all sorts of role playing games and would be
interested in starting another gaming group that would be open to playing
all sorts of games not just D and D. I am not however a GM type myself.
That is to say that I am not very good at the running of an adventure but I
love playing and can help new players understand and learn a variety of
RPG's. I don't want anyone to misunderstand, John has a great group and I
in no way want to discourage people from joining but if there is a GM out
there who would enjoy running games. I would be willing to undertake
teaching newbees and handling organizational matters. Please let me know at
this addy or on list.

Thanks,
Yvonne

Open Letter to Dungeon Master, John.
Dear John,
I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons since February 29, 2000,
or for more than seven years.
Ever since I got this message from David Greenwood.
Hi all,

Anybody interested in learning, and eventually playing D&D over the
Audio-tips chat line should join us this Sunday night at 6pm Pacific, 9
Eastern time, or 10:30 in Newfoundland.

Randy Hammer is doing a great job as Dungeon Master. We decided to try
a
test dungeon, so four of us armored up and entered a tower filled with
Hobgoblins and other nasty creatures. I have played D&D many times
sitting
around friends' kitchen tables , and I wasn't sure how it would work
over
a
chat line. It works very well.

For those of you have never played the game, the concept is simple. The
Dungeon Master verbally describes in detail the dungeon world to you,
while
you slowly explore. All events in the world are controlled by an
assortment
of various multi-sided dice. For example, you might tell the Dungeon
Master
that you are going to try to kick down this door that is blocking your
way.
The DM then rolls several times. First to see if you are successful.
Next,
to see if you attracted any wandering monsters with the noise. Then
maybe
again to see what type of monster shows up. An maybe yet again to see
how
many of them appear. This is all totally transparent to the gamer, who
interacts with the other gamers in the group while the world is slowly
being
revealed.

Even if you are mildly interested, it might be worth your while to
listen
in
and see what it's all about. And for those of you who are interested in
playing, you should contact Randy at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
By the way, you can access the chat line through Audio-Tips at:
and make your way to the blind gamers room.

Hope to see you there,
David Greenwood.

Now Phil:
So although I know you have not been Dragon Master for the entire time
when
I combine all the DM's that have run the game in all these seven years
we
have yet to encounter a single dragon.
True, one dragon did pick up and fly away with one of our party members,
but
this was due to his leaving the game and was not in a battle against the
dragon.
Maybe the game should be changed to Dungeons and Elves, or Dungeons and
Trolls for we have encountered these creatures much more than dragons.
I hope you will consider my suggestions with all the seriousness that
they
are entitled.
yours truly,
Phil

Well, it was more a question rather than a suggestion.

Obviously bomb blaster will be a very different game from Monti, with a
completely different atmosphere and emphasis, however I was only
 thinking
 of
some fairly generic game mechanics and behaviours, which exist in many
 main
stream 2D platform games, - but thus far Monti is the ony one to
impliment them in audio that I know about, which Imho is a shame.

However as I said, I'd love to see more complex audio 2D platform games,
with multiple levels, ladders etc, like audio Donkey Kong or Audio
 original
 Mega man for example

Of course though, it's your game, and you might have other (and most
probably better), thoughts about where it might go, as I said, it
 was
more a question than anything else.

 Beware the Grue!

[Audyssey] directional mud?

anyone know what this is?

I've looked for so long for something like this because on muds with
ascii I always have to ask around and I feel like a moron because I'm
looking all around but can't find the stupid area I'm looking for.

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then?

2007-04-08 Thread Brandon Hicks
Hi,
Thought I'd put my thoughts up here.
I think that if you can describe, or get someone to describe, in good
terms what the sounds are like in the manual, a sound menu isn't
necessary. For SOD, there wasn't one because everything was distinct.
For Tank Commander, it's hard to describe some of the differences in the
tanks, they need to be heard, thus having the sounds menu.

 go
into Battrick. With JFW 6, it seems fine, all the links are there, but
when I try it with JFW 8, there are only the main links, global,
community, etc, why is this and how on earth do I get the other links
 using JFW 8?
My other question is, I've been reading about this game Second Life, is
 it
accessible for us, has anyone ever tried to play this?
 Thanks

Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then?

2007-04-08 Thread Niko C
I agree but let's use a mud I'm playing for example (aardwolf). If you want
to play this game, point your telnet or mudclient to aardmud.org port 4010.
Basicly I just got into the game and explorered and learned from other
users. You shouldn't give the entire game away before you let people play
it. Thta's the good of muds and most modern video games. You have to do your
own explorering. Of course, you aren't just left in the dust. You have
newbie help, books, you can obtain new books and there are people to ask for
help. You also figure things out on your own. Of course, bomb blaster will
not be multi-player so you can't use people to help you. But perhapse a
training school that you go through where you are guided and you have to do
what ever you do and a trainer is there walking you through it. That's what
happened when I first entered aardwolf. I went through training and was
given very week oponents and allowed to pick up objects with a trainer
(automated) walking me through it. It's more realistic then a readme. Also,
with a training session, you don't need a learn sounds menu because you'll
hear them while learning unlike readmes.

Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then?

2007-04-08 Thread Charles Rivard
Usually a readme file tells of updates to the original file, or what is
included in a game package, rather than how to play a game. You mention
going into training mode or something like that to learn to use a weapon or
to play a game, which is fine, as long as there are cues, whether visual for
graphical games or audio feedback for games for the blind, that you can use
to learn from. But you should, in my opinion, never have to learn a game by
just diving into it and getting killed because you had no idea beforehand of
what you were supposed to do once you started playing. Let's put it this
way: A high wire acrobat does not practice at a height of 40 feet with no
safety net before learning to walk on the ground.

Re: [Audyssey] mud clients.

2007-04-08 Thread Niko C
The thing with a lot of blind people is that they use a lot of software that
other blind people use because they know it's safe. You should feel free to
explore and see what else is outthere and figure out if it is accessible
yourself instead of asking. I'm not complaining I'm simply giving advice to
find better software. Monkeyterm is a mudclient that a lot of blind people
use. If you go to randylaptop.com and go to the mud section, he'll explain
it all to you in detail how to make it accessible. I do stress however to
use mushclient at mushclient.org. If that's not right I'[ll look for it and
send the URL and the plugin to interfase with jfw. It truly is a better
client.

Re: [Audyssey] mud clients.

I use mushclient. It was shareware and you had to buy it but now it is
freeware and with no limmitations! There is a plugin that will output it's
contents to the jfw api. You can make advanced triggers. It really is a good
mud client. But if anyone knows, is there a way that I can run multiple
commands betwene semicolons? The mud that I plays gives a lot of directional
commands like "run se4e;open s;run nw" and I have to go into notepad and
then it line by line. Quite anoying.

Re: [Audyssey] HappyEaster

2007-04-08 Thread Phil Vlasak
Hi Anne,
You could try several things.
First sometimes the game does lock up especially if the game level has not
fully loaded.
When the game is in main menu mode, I put Sarah inside a wall and that may
be where you are.
After hearing Sarah announce the floor you should be able to walk forward
with up arrow.
If you hit up arrow and do not here her walking then try the letter I which
is the same command.
Also on some versions JFW will intercept arrow keys and not pass them
through to the game so unloading JFW improves your walking ability.

Lastly if you have picked up a broom and hit enter on it you are in mid air
and should not hear walking sounds.
It is harder to tell that you are traveling in this way.
If you hit control plus w and the coordinates are changing than you are
moving.
hope these suggestions help.
Phil

[Audyssey] Open letter to Dungeon Master, John

2007-04-08 Thread Phil Vlasak
Open Letter to Dungeon Master, John.
Dear John,
I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons since February 29, 2000,
or for more than seven years.
Ever since I got this message from David Greenwood.
Hi all,

Anybody interested in learning, and eventually playing D&D over the
Audio-tips chat line should join us this Sunday night at 6pm Pacific, 9
Eastern time, or 10:30 in Newfoundland.

Randy Hammer is doing a great job as Dungeon Master. We decided to try a
test dungeon, so four of us armored up and entered a tower filled with
Hobgoblins and other nasty creatures. I have played D&D many times sitting
around friends' kitchen tables , and I wasn't sure how it would work over a
chat line. It works very well.

For those of you have never played the game, the concept is simple. The
Dungeon Master verbally describes in detail the dungeon world to you, while
you slowly explore. All events in the world are controlled by an assortment
of various multi-sided dice. For example, you might tell the Dungeon Master
that you are going to try to kick down this door that is blocking your way.
The DM then rolls several times. First to see if you are successful. Next,
to see if you attracted any wandering monsters with the noise. Then maybe
again to see what type of monster shows up. An maybe yet again to see how
many of them appear. This is all totally transparent to the gamer, who
interacts with the other gamers in the group while the world is slowly being
revealed.

Even if you are mildly interested, it might be worth your while to listen in
and see what it's all about. And for those of you who are interested in
playing, you should contact Randy at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
By the way, you can access the chat line through Audio-Tips at:
and make your way to the blind gamers room.

Hope to see you there,
David Greenwood.

Now Phil:
So although I know you have not been Dragon Master for the entire time when
I combine all the DM's that have run the game in all these seven years we
have yet to encounter a single dragon.
True, one dragon did pick up and fly away with one of our party members, but
this was due to his leaving the game and was not in a battle against the
dragon.
Maybe the game should be changed to Dungeons and Elves, or Dungeons and
Trolls for we have encountered these creatures much more than dragons.
I hope you will consider my suggestions with all the seriousness that they
are entitled.
yours truly,
Phil

watch out guards!
but obviously you as the player have to watch out for them too. just like in

Hmm, suggestions.
missions, will we have a storyline.
Could be cool to have a military sim.
Hmm, what about disarming bombs, and picking them up, using them as grenades or
something, blowing up stuff.
What about having a baseball bat in the game, big, heavy metal club.
smash.

 Well cool!

I'd certainly like to see more multi-level 2D games, and as you
 mentioned
earlier that Bomb blaster has doors and multiple floors to the
 buildings,
I'd guess it is one. Does it have platform jumping and or ladders like
 Monti?

 Beware the grue!

I would be bothered.

Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then?

2007-04-08 Thread Dark
Deffinately sounds fun.

I would guess from your description that each building has it's own layout,
rather than things being generated randomly.

If that is the case, I've been thinking for a long time that a map editer
for an audio game would be cool, to allow people to create their own levels.

thus far the only game I know that has one is Dyna man, and while that is
fun to play around with, personally I don't find the amount of game elements
in Dyna man really enough to create a lot of variety when playing with the
different maps.

but for a game with lots of elements like Bomb blaster, a map editer would
deffinately be good I think and could lead to some really interesting and
challenging levels.
though i do understand that doing this sort of thing might be time consuming
as far as programming goes.

well there's a suggestion anyway.

Beware the Grue!

 Well cool!

I'd certainly like to see more multi-level 2D games, and as you
 mentioned
earlier that Bomb blaster has doors and multiple floors to the
 buildings,
I'd guess it is one. Does it have platform jumping and or
 ladders like
 Monti?

 Beware the grue!

Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then?

2007-04-08 Thread damien c. sadler - head of x-sight interactive
i'm always looking for suggestions, and if there are anything you want in
this game then just tell me. at the moment, it is rooms and buildings, each
filled with stacks of bombs, machines, alarms, guards, and special items.
you can use any special item on anything, meaning that weapons are picked up
are regarded as special items. the only items that are not considered
special items are those you already come equipped with, which are an item
detector, and obviously, your body. your body can be used for normal real
life purposes, such as walking, fighting and opening doors. most special and
standard items will have hotkeys so you will rarely even need to go into
your inventory.
the object is to disarm bombs, deactivate the machines that run them, fight
the guards who watch over some of them, run from or destroy alarms that will
alert the guards if you stay around them while they're shrieking or ringing
at you, open, close, lock, unlock, or if you're getting so frustrated
because you can't find a key, smash up doors, and deal with timewasters such
as mobile phone calls, radio communication, giving explanations to the
owners or workers if there are any in a specific building, buying items from
the store, and having to do various other normal day-to-day things, but
making certain to be quick about them, as some of these bombs could go off
at any time.
as one bomb goes off you will lose some of your points, the more money you
end with the more points you get, the more health also, the quicker time you
did it, the more buildings remain unharmed, score depends on those sorts of
factors.
it is my plans to run contests through this game, and build a
contest-checking system and giving you the option of entering contests,
where you can play in various strategies, like fastest person to get
through, person with more money, sound contests, person with lowest score,
highest cheater, things like that.

if there are any suggestions about what further developments (fun,
challenging, interesting) i could put on it, do let me know. and yes, i do
plan to have the popular cheats and easter eggs in there too.

regards,

damien

do you think i should put any sort of learn game sounds in bomb

currently there isn't one but if people want it it's easily added, but
through my understanding on what i've just read people aren't really
 bothered about such a menu.

Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then?

2007-04-08 Thread Dark
Well, it was more a question rather than a suggestion.

Obviously bomb blaster will be a very different game from Monti, with a
completely different atmosphere and emphasis, however I was only thinking of
some fairly generic game mechanics and behaviours, which exist in many main
stream 2D platform games, - but thus far Monti is the ony one to
impliment them in audio that I know about, which Imho is a shame.

However as I said, I'd love to see more complex audio 2D platform games,
with multiple levels, ladders etc, like audio Donkey Kong or Audio original
Mega man for example

Of course though, it's your game, and you might have other (and most
probably better), thoughts about where it might go, as I said, it was
more a question than anything else.

Beware the Grue!

bombs and explosions etc.

[Audyssey] game sounds menu - Re: bomb blaster then?

2007-04-08 Thread Charles Rivard
To me, an audio game without a sounds menu is like a game without an
instruction manual. You have to know what to listen for in order to know
what to do.

Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then?

2007-04-08 Thread Dark
Well cool!

I'd certainly like to see more multi-level 2D games, and as you mentioned
earlier that Bomb blaster has doors and multiple floors to the buildings,
I'd guess it is one. Does it have platform jumping and or ladders like
Monti?

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Oh tar damian.

Perhaps by the time it's ready I will have recording sorted so that I won't
need to play on speakers and can reccord stuff in 3D, so maybe a casting of

A small learn game sounds menue deffinately sounds like a plan.

Hi Damian.

As Phil says, it all depends upon the complexity of the game, especially if
it's 3D and involves targiting and the like or many different types of
enemy.

I'd stil personally advise keeping it minimal though even in these cases so
there is stil a surprise and exploration element. I thought the menue in
Sarah was absolutely perfect, sinse it gave you all the tools you need to
start the game and not get confused, but there is stil more than enough to
discover for yourself, even for a game exploration nut like me.

Btw Damian, I'd be highly interested in beta testing work on bomb blaster if
you'd like (the game certainly sounds fun).

Of course, I'm sure lots of other people here would be interested in
applying for positions on the beta team as well, so it'll all depend upon
how you decide to handle beta tester applications etc.

Hi damien,
I always appreciate a sound describing feature and if I have no trouble
identifying sounds I do not need it but if I do have trouble it is important
to have.
Of course certain sounds may be critical to game play like the tone when a
target is in your cross hairs of your gun.
If you have different creatures with different capabilities of killing you
then something to distinguish one from another is important.

Re: [Audyssey] treasure mania 1

2007-04-08 Thread Dark
Indeed, and a good friend of mine recently got a nasty shark related
surprise wen it happened, which was amusing.

I think for very complex games like Technoshock or Sarah a few sounds like
the sounds for targiting enemies and a few basic sounds of their attacks can
be useful, but I'd regard these cases as the exception rather than the rule,
and certainly for a game like Treasuremania it isn't necessary imho.

And even for something like technoshock, or Sarah I'd only want a few sounds
in the menue.

Beware the Grue!

Re: [Audyssey] treasure mania 1

2007-04-08 Thread Robjoy
Well, it is possible to record reviews, so they're like screen shots, but with
sounds.
A trailer is a bit different, as it is supposed to show the features of the
game, or to give a demonstration how the game will look like when it'll be
released.
In this game, a learn game sound feature could spoil important things, for
example if you play the game at first, you won't know that the shark can catch
your
net.

Re: [Audyssey] treasure mania 1

2007-04-08 Thread Dark
Hi Ian.

treasuremania's actually quite simple once you pick the sounds up. You are
going along in your boat from left to right with clifs at either end. You
can distinguish where the cliffs are by the long, gritty, waves breaking on
a beach type sound they make.

the main thing you need to do in the game is collect chests. these make a
very slight creeking sound when your boat is close, but that's actually
slightly hard to hear imho, so just press the R key to use your detector
which will give you a loud beeping sound when it's time to lower your hook
for a chest.

If your hook hits the chest you'll here a hollo booming sound and can start
drawing it back up. the bell like bong sounds means new level, and the
swishing sound means more chests have come onto the playing field.

then, there is fish and whether conditions, in rough whether you might hear
a storm and the wave sounds will be bigger, and moving around or staying in
one place will be harder. Fish make a variety of small splashing and bubling
noises, and you can catch the small ones that buble at you. But when your
lowering your chain for a chest, the fish can tangle it which obviously
isn't good.

then there are sharks that make the evil snorting sound, don't try to fish
these with your net, and certainly don't jump into the water when you here
them around.

The only other three sounds you need to know are the arrow, lightning and
bees, which are probably easy to pick up here, but I'll mention them anyway
for completeness sake.

When you here a storm and a smashing type noise, make sure your not close or
you'll get struck by lightning.

A series of wooshing noises panning across your speakers means an arrow, so
duck with the left ctrl. and on the insane difficulty, the killer bees sound
like, - well your average bee (a pretty evil disguise methinks).

Anyway, Hth.

Personally, I think the game should stay as it is without a learn game
sounds menue, but then again I didn't myself have difficulty with the sounds
in the game, so it's probably just a matter of preference.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Hi Shaun and all,
That is a bug, which will be fixed in the next release.
We're collecting bugs and fixing them, a patch will be posted soon. Until that
, saving the game and reloading it could help.

Hello,
Experimenting in a game is always a main factor, keep in mind that in a
mainstream game you won't find a "learn game pictures" feature. We're following
the
same way, and i believe if you experiment with it, you'll get much more than
with the knowledge of the sounds.

But this is the problem, when your brother and everyone else uses the pc,
and love new technology! Grin. I really would like a work around, as I want
to carry on playing! This is actually quite a serious problem, could you
imagine if it was quite an important site? There must obviously be some way
of accessing the other links, but if there, for some strange reason isn't,
FS should see this as a very urgent problem.
