[Audyssey] anyone playing aardwolf?
Hi. I was playing a mud called Erion which had some similarities to Aardwolf, but progression was a little slow, and so I decided to give aardwolf another try. I’m actually finding now I’m getting on far better than I did previously, have a level 35 ranger (in less than two days), and am finding things like the eqsearch command far more help. I’ll probably update the audiogames.net page with some extra info, but if anyone hasn’t played aardwolf, I’d rcommend it, and of course I know there are those on list who have played far longer than I have. Connection info I is aardmud.org port 23. I’m kyrel in game if anyone wants to look me up. All the best, Dark. Re: [Audyssey] I am remembering Thomas ward
Hi Danielle. As regards Tom's games, it's rather sad to say that he did have problems getting projects finished in his life. The sarah game is actually by Phil Vlasac of pcs. The main games tom created were startrek final conflict, the sadly unreleased Montizumas revenge (due to all the shenanigans with the cease and decist order), and the game it became, mysteries of the ancients only one level of which was finished (the game featuring Angela Carter. all of tom's work that could be preserved is available on the audiogames archive here: http://www.agarchive.net/pages/devs/usa.html Hth. Re: [Audyssey] I am remembering Thomas ward
Hi Steven. I admit I've been missing Tom quite a lot myself. I first met him in 2005 when I subscribed to this list, indeed I think he was one of the first people to welcome me, if not literally the first. We had a lot of conversations on this list, on the usa games list, and the audiogames.net forum, and we exchanged private emails as well. Tom is definitely someone I counted as a friend, and what is really sad is that there have been so many changes in my life this year that I would've loved to discuss with him, such as my marriage. Heck even now my lady will run into an author like Elizabeth Moon or one of Dean Koontz books and I'll say "that was one of Tom's favourites, he recommended it" It's odd, I still sometimes open my email and expect something from Tom, or indeed start a month and expect one of Jim Kitchin's reports and then a good natured rangle over whether Tom or I got the top spot for most messages sent that month :D. Just like Jim, Tom is definitely missed. All the best, Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Swamp question
Hi. Agree on the trackpad, though Swamp is well worth it. the account costs two dollars a month, though you have to pay one full year first. Bare in mind though, your only charged for a month if you play that month, so if you leave swamp and then come back your account will still be okay. The account also applies to any and all online games Aprone creates, though Swamp is the main thing you get, however you can also use it to play Castaways online or the beata of castaways 2, and it's likely Aprone will be making more online games in the future. To find out more and buy the account go to: https://p9.secure.hostingprod.com/@www.kaldobsky.com/ssl/aboutgameraccounts.php Imho it's well worth it. hth. Re: [Audyssey] Alteraeon Kinzhay quest
Hi. I didn't realize the deed in azeroth was actually linked to the catacombs benieth azeroth, which is technically listed as another area, so thanks for letting me know about those, it's certainly true I hadn't explored it completely. As to the kinzhay quest though I'm afraid nobody is sending me to gads. I talked to the black mage in the village square who sent me to talk to his brother in the hut to the north. The brother told me about the problems with the rebellian and the crystalbut didn't say anything about where to go (on the quest list it just repeats what he said). Then however, the gate keeper won't talk to me, he just gives the generic speech when I try talking to them, he doesn't send me to gads or anything, indeed one ironic thing is he says if I've lost the tracer crystal I can give him 250 gold for another one,yet he's not told me where to get the first one, which is weerd indeed. [Audyssey] Alteraeon Kinzhay quest
Hi. I decided I needed a break from the undead drow city so went off to do some other quests. First up is the fire world of Kinzhay and the quest to find a lost research team, however I'm running into a rather odd problem. The black mage in the village told me that the research team was stuck because the rebellion was blocking the way, and because they didn't have a new tracer crystal to get back. So, first I recalled to the gate keeper to ask about a new tracer crystal. He however is giving me the self same speech he gave first time around, that the research mission is missing, though oddly enough he's saying he'll replace my tracer crystal if I give him 250 gold, which is rather odd since he hasn't given me the first one yet. Someone on the questinfo channel did say I had to go and talk to a mage in gad's but that just seems weerd when I'd not been told to by the research party, particularly since it would be easier to get the crystal from the gate keeper. I also have one unrelated question about azeroth keep. i went in there and did the fruit negotiation quest, however that barely scratched the surface. "where fame" tells me there are things in there to slay, but it seems odd there are no deeds at least involving them. Any chance an extra deed could be added? I'm not above going in there just to explore and get monsters, but I do like getting all the achievements, indeed I'll probably head back to kordan just to do the newly added quest even though it's way below my level at this point and I won't get much for it, since I like completing all the quests. Re: [Audyssey] Swamp question
It might actually help if there was a specific "offline tryout mode" which set the player on map one with an average zombie count and item drops just to get used to the game. Perhaps someone could even write a couple of tutorial quests into that too. I do really enjoy swamp and indeed need to set it up and try again myself now that I have a decent usb mouse, albeit setting up my new windows 10 machine comes first. Re: [Audyssey] Swamp help
Hi Michael. Well you can get across deep water with equipping the life vest, but those are hard to come by so your better off using the bridge. There is a bridge across the creak about half way down. When you get to the creak, go south along the shore until you find the bridge, indeed I believe you can use a beacon on the bridge directly. If you look in the swamp manual there are textual descriptions of all the maps and roughly where things are, which detail things like where bridges are etc, I'd suggest giving those a look to help with orientation. Great fun, although level 15 took me several hours to solve, I am *not* looking forward to level 16, but I'm having a blast with this thing. And, just for reference. I have been saying for years there's no reason why audio games can't have graphics, and Aprone proves the point by his games being playable both by sighted and blind players. Sure, the graphics aren't anything to write home about, but they don't have to be, they just have to work, and they do, and that's the kind of thing I mean when I say there's no reason not to have graphical interfaces to games. Hell, sometimes, there is no graphics, just plain text, but that text is only presented via text to speech, and no actual text is written on the screen, and that (in my opinion at least) is inexcusable, that's just plain laziness. Putting text on the screen is something computers have done since nearly the very beginning (excluding punch cards and line printers), so not including text onscreen just because it's intended for the blind is just silly. Anyway, I digress (as usual). I'm just having a blast with this game, and figured I'd mention it, in case others haven't tried it out yet, (or if they had, maybe they'd go back and try again :)) --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] preludeamals (way too much fun)
Hi Phil. Actually, preludimals was a game Aprone released last summer. It does have a db page but the site is currently offline, however if you go to Aprone's site at: https://p9.secure.hostingprod.com/@www.kaldobsky.com/ssl/audiogames.php You will find it. it's very different from lunimals, what is commonly called a transport puzzle. As I said, I admire the design, even if I'm fairly terrible at the actual execution in the game itself :D. All the best, Dark. Due to Btinternet being inconvenient, this email address will not be in use for very long. Please contact me on my other public address, d...@xgam.org. This beta has 7 missions, each with their own set of quests. Unlike his previous games, this one is not self voiced with him speaking. The game should work with your preferred screen reading software, or you can use the built-in SAPI. It has been tested with NVDA and Window eyes. The game is so much fun. This is exactly the kind of thing I've been thinking of making for myself, only I hadn't quite managed to get all the details worked out, but the vague outline was there, and this game fits the bill completely. [Audyssey] cosmic rage mud
Okay, this is just to let people know about a mud I've been trying out recently. The mud is cosmic rage cosmicrage.nathantech.net port . There is also an official soundpack for vipmud, type @soundpacks in game for the most current link (remember the at sign, ie :). ? The mud is run by Nathan smith, who's a member of the audiogames.net forum, though the mud has a growing number of both sighted and vi players, plus it has a team of dedicated builders. It's been up since july of this year, and the progress is quite astounding. To those who've played muds like miriani and star conquest, cosmic rage shares a few of the same principles, but is extremely different in feel, for a start there is no unrestricted pvp. The game is set in space, with you playing as one of four races, human, dragon (yes space dragons!), cy-larken, (a robotic race), or the ryuchi, human/dragon hybrids. In the game you do various activities to raise in rank, 45 different activities actually with new ones being added. Activities start off with fairly simple planet based things like hunting, hand mining, and digging into volcanos for ores (being careful of monsters of course). They then go through piloting trash collection trucks and volcano harvesters, up to several activities involved with boats and boating, harvesting gasious pollution from planet's atmospheres to eventually getting a spaceship. Once you have a ship the real fun starts. Combat missions (and combat in this particular space game isn't too tough), as well as activities like orbit cleaning, passenger transport etc. One thing I really like about the space flight aspect of things is that there are aa lot of details and realistic touches, for example setting your heat shields for landing or launching from planets occasionally getting your ship damaged by small dust particles in space, and little alien ratica, nasty little creatures that invade your ship when your doing innocuous activities like orbit cleaning. With the huge number of activities, the game certainly doesn't feel grindy, however there is more as well. There are npcs with quests on offer to ind them various items or slay enemies, there is ground combat against monsters, there is lots of crafting and even building factories. The game has an rp policy, but it's not overly stringent, though I will advise people to make sure to ask any b"where is" type of questions on general chat channel rather than the newbie channel (this one rather confused me, but hay it's just one different command). I'd highly recommend this one, especially if, like me you didn't find yourself able to get on with some of the other space games, this one is much more about the fun activities, rp is there for those who want to, and pvp again is restricted only to specific arenas. Plus, I have to say levels come very very! quickly, and there are so many activities the game doesn't get at all grindy, quite aside from the quests, crafting etc. all the best, Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] alter aeon request
Hi josh. I don't think any mud will be like minecraft, since a major reason for minecraft is mining different bricks and building things in three dimentions with them, rather like lego bricks. I don't think any mud would have that. Alteraeon does have some cool crafting though and more is being added, I love brewing. No mining as yet. if you want a mud with fun mining try clok, though again that's more realistic mining where you find ores and smelt them like minecraft. Alteraeon is great for all the other reasons though, oh and yes, mushZ is being updated, I think the last update was in december. Re: [Audyssey] Calling all Gamers.
Again, it's a question of ideals. if we had infinite time and resources, yes, certainly all audiogames that could would have readable subtitles, at least simplified graphics or similar, but pragmatically for a one or two person company that's just not possible to include all the time. On the other hand, if a death person say asked for an otherwise text game which happened to use an audio alert for a couple of specific events to have a textual or visual one, that would not be an issue, or rather any developer who refused such would not be reasonable. In the case of Valve and steam specifically though, they are a huge company and do! have the resources to make the basic steam interface accessible, html version would already work and it's not as if major companies don't make similar small adaptations for disabilities, eg, closed captioning for the deaf which now occurs in a lot of games. Again though it's one of these cases of literal lack of visibility, publicity, education and any sort of dialogue, indeed that is why so frequently once you can! talk to the actual people who do the developing, any sort of access questions are fairly easy to sort out, (I'd imagine the same goes for pretty much any disabled access). There are increasingly a lot of indi developers working on audiogames or accessible text games, and with the rising indi market this is something that will only increase. Generally speaking I've found that if you can actually talk to a game's developer, the actual person with the ideas who sits down and rights the nuts and bolts code, changes do happen, since at rock bottom developers want people playing their games and are generally happy to make changes so that vi gamers can. So, while I don't think steam will be accessible any time soon, I do see more accessible releases from indi developers in stand alone packages for Ios and windows, and more developers including access in the future. Re: [Audyssey] Calling all Gamers.
Well universal access would be the ideal, but it is a very long way off indeed. In the case of steam though however, there has already been really extensive attempts to contact tthem that have been stone walled, and while I appreciate the efforts of anyone trying, I doubt very much valve will listen. In the 11 years I've been working in game access, not one single major main stream company has shown a consistant regard for accessibility in games development. There is the odd single landmark release such as sound voyage or studio 5, but that is more a matter of a specific designer wanting to create an audio game and the publisher of whatever system she/he is working for lacking up credit than any real commitment by the publisher, and once that designer's project is finished the publisher goes back to churning out games with the huge 3D graphics and big explosions that keep the prophets rolling in and the shareholders happy. Where progress is! made, is games by indipendent designers for systems that already have a degree of access, either through some commitment on the part of the publishers of that platform, or by third party developers working to make the systems themselves accessible through running external programs. So, while I applaud efforts to make Valve listen to access requests, I doubt they ever will. I personally would therefore suggest people encourage develpers of accessible games to stay away from steam, particularly because most developers who also publish accessible games on steam publish off it too (choiceofgames, nielsbauer etc), and because we shouldn't be supporting a company with no interest in accessibility at all. I can only at this point see steam being made accessible through some sort of third party software, ie, a steam screen reader, however sice steam itself is rather locked down to the point that it's interface can't be tampered with, I doubt any developer would be able to make something like that, even assuming Valve would give permission, since again with the modern business model of software development it's not like back in the nineties when anyone with the know how could make a screen reader and anyone else could freely use it. Summary, Good luck, but I fear that Steam is going to remain inacceisslbe due to the greedy bastards in charge (may they all die horribly of gout caused by their stupidly opulent life styles). That way there would be no need for a separation between say blind accenssible games and a game that random person can just pick up off the shelf and put in their computer or whatever they're playing the game on and play it. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Setting it upis no problem, there is no need to connect or mess around with ports, even the speech runs pretty instantaniously with most readers I do know getting mushZ to work with other muds besides alteraeon isn't easy, but as it's designed for alteraeon I was myself surprised how quickly and easily it worked,. The core issue is that locks are too binary; you can either unlock them fairly easily, or you'll just plain be stuck. For the most part we've been dealing with it by adding keys and making things easy to pick, but that's a cheesy hack at best. We've had a couple of proposals for changing locks over the years, we're just not sure if those proposals would actually fix the problems. It also just hasn't been very high priority; there are plenty of issues and problems we do know how to easily fix that we could work on instead. That's not a great answer, but that's why this is still in a state where we're not happy with it. Ultimately, we want a setup where lock difficulty is more consistently set for the area level, and players are guaranteed to succeed in opening a lock even if they're completely skill less and don't have the key. The skills should be able to reduce the time necessary to open a lock. Figuring out all the details for this sort of thing is tedious and irritating. We'll figure something out eventually, but it probably won't be until well past the anniversary event. -dentin Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com On Tue, Jan 10, 2017 at 3:26 AM, dark wrote: Hi. [Audyssey] Reply to Dentin re locks
Hi Dentin. I would certainly like to see this fixed, indeed I quite enjoy finding keys to areas in dungeons myself since it always feels like further exploring. I would have agreed the issue wasn't that serious until it actually got me killed through lack of mana, though in fairness part of the respponsability for the death was mine since I was recharging my suncatchers at the time and both of my really good animal minians had been killed, thus I was relatively defenseless. i'm glad the larger issue is being dealt with by the builders, but for the smaller matter, perhaps you could consider adding a key to that door in the drow city under fort magneatia? it was the steel door up the north east passage once you'd gone west after getting onto the scorched streets. Re: [Audyssey] Alteraeon knock spell
Hi kieth. Yes, the knock spell is an alternative to pick locks, but being as mana is far more useful than movement and harder to acquire, and that the picklock skill seems over all more efficient, it should really have a bit more to recommend it as a choice, eg as I said being slower but more reliable. Well from what I've seen thus far, knock and picklock are about the same in terms of the doors they can open, it's just the mechanics that are different, or to put it another way, I've never encountered a door that can be picked but can't be knock spelled or visa versa, though there are certainly doors that are imune to both and need a key. Hi. if Knock was too useful you'd have the oposite problem where nobody used pick locks. if there are two ways to do the same thing they need to have some vaguely equal balance rather than one being far better than another as is currently the case with the knock spell. Brewing potions is fun and random and often seems to produce useful things, but I'm now finding some of the salves and tinctures for druids are really! useful to have, indeed I've just learnt the bottling skill especially so that I can preserve some of the more handy tinctures like venomstop and draw poison. Yes, there are some sounds and in game music, though I wouldn't say the sound experience of the game is a main selling point and if your looking for high quality audio you'll probably be disappointed. it's mainly as I said a text game with stratogy and attacks and so on. [Audyssey] Alteraeon Brewing and inventory suggestion
Hi. I've been doing a lot of brewig recently, since there are some very cool salves and tinctures, (plus playing with potions is fun). One thing which is slightly irritating me however, is that I have a container just for herbs, and while getting all the herbs out of it to look at possible recipes is easy enough, putting herbs in it is less so because each herb has a different keyword and only some of them respond to the word "herb" Having all herbs with "herb" as a keyword would also be easier or aliases, for example if I created an alias to both gather herb and automatically sto it in a container using the word "herb" On a more serious level, with the extra crafting in the game, (which I'm loving, even though i've not yet made any halfway decent leather armour), it'd be nice if perhaps some category sorting commands could be added, eg "put all herbs in container", or "Drop all meat" especially with cooking and stone knapping on the horizon and likely more categories of things your character will need to store in the future. Re: [Audyssey] Alter Aeon Cleric Expansion
Hi Dentin. Great news about the updattes, I'll say primary clerric was a hard class to play so I'm glad for the updates, albeit I'm loving being a druid right now. Can I head back to slo and get the new quests? or would I need to restart with a new charcter, I'd be interested to see what a druid specific class area would be like, even if I'd be getting no xp for actual kills. I know I could create a second character just to see the new stuff, but I don't really have time or inclination to play two chars. if not, fair enough, I'm looking forward to trying the stone knapping skill which I've seen in the help, and I'll certainly givew leach life a go. 've really loved the christmas events this time, and they've absolutely helped me with lots of advancement, so more events in a couple of weeks would be lovely. The biggest changes include: - Add new 'vigor', 'fortitude' and 'expiation' spells to the 'divine aid' spellgroup. - Add new 'divine conjuration' spellgroup, with new spells 'radiant orb', 'miraculous vestment' and 'mystic projectile'. - Add a 'consecrate armor' skill, which serves as a high quality enchant usable at low and high levels. - Add new 'condemnation', 'fatigue', 'exhaustion', 'clasp of corruption', and 'death and decay' spells to the 'divine might' spellgroup. - Add new 'divine agent' skill group, with new skills 'petition incarnate', 'petition aspect', and 'celestial audience'. - Add new 'remorse' alignment-based cleric curse. - Add new 'brew unguent' skill, and new unguent-only spells 'devil ill', 'angel ravage', and 'undead scourge'. There's also a few non-cleric updates: - Custom newbie areas for mage, thief, and druid classes, with warrior coming soon. - A new 'stone knapping' skill for making stone tools. - A new druid skill, 'leech life'. - Two new necromancer spells, 'bone tool' and 'bloodbond'. On top of this, Alter Aeon's 22nd anniversary is coming up in two weeks! We plan to have a handful of events, and will be booting up a copy of the 1995 version of Alter Aeon for people to explore and remember the 'good old days'. Hi charlse. the game Tyler is looking for isn't "A dark room" the rpg for ios, but the dark room sex game, released for pc. Hi All. Well it's been a couple of busy days since I released Tube Sim. From the feedback I've had generally it looks like you're all enjoying playing. So far in the 3 days since release it's been downloaded over 530 times. A number of questions have been asked which I'm going to attempt to answer here: 1. Why is some of the information so quiet once you leave driver school and start doing missions? Answer: Hands up, there's a bug here. The driver school does quite a bit of ducking of audio while messages are spoken. In some situations when you go to do a real mission after driver school the audio is still ducked. This will be fixed in the next release. For now I'd suggest once you complete driver school you should exit the game from the main menu and reload it before moving on to the missions. This should only be an issue with coming out of driver school. 2. Exiting the game, why can't I just hit alt f4 to close it? Answer: This was deliberate, in the real world a driver cannot just exit a train and leave it in the middle of the track. As it stands you've got 2 options. Escape will pause the game and f7 will radio the control room asking for relief, this means that your run will end at when you open the doors at the next station. Of all the comments I've had about the game this seems to annoy most people so in a future release I'm planning to give you an option to quit the mission from the pause menu. When you do this my intention is that your distance and score will not be logged as your abandoning your train. I'm also tempted to reduce the customer service overall score a bit if you do this as its breaking the policy of trying to keep the game as realistic as possible. I'll think about that one. I'd hope that this is something that most people don't do very often. 3. Are the places real places in London, how close is this to what a real tube driver does? Answer: Yes, the stations, routes and distances between stations is based on the real world. I did quite a bit of reading up on what a real world tube driver does and I'd say it's about 75% accurate. There are some changes to do with setting up the train that a driver does that you don't do in the game, things like static break tests and setting up the destination signs. Also the rear lights are set and you have to set various modes in the rear cab. As there is no rear cab in the game I moved the switches. The radio sequences I completely made up. The speed limits and which bits are over ground and which bits are underground are randomly generated and don't reflect the real world. 4. Why can't I stop at the stations, why don't the alarms play? Answer: My guess you're overshooting because you're going too fast. The following may help, remember that you can practise stopping with lesson 2 in the driver school. At top speed, 80 KMPH your stopping distances are about 100M if you use the breaks, and about 600 M if you just use the throttle controls. Generally unless you're late I'd not suggest going faster than 50 KMPH. By the time you're 100 M from the station your speed should be about 30 KMPH. 50 you should be down to about 20 KMPH. 15 M should be down to 10 KMPH. If you're at 10 KMPH at when you get told your 15 M away hit down twice to bring your train to a stop, this should bring you nicely to a stop in the stop zone without using the breaks. 5. Why can't I move the train? Answer: I'd Suggest reading the documentation and going through driver school. However there are a couple of common things you should check. Are your doors closed? Is your air pressure higher than 50? Are you holding the dead man switch? 6. How do you know when your underground or over ground. Answer: If you can hear the birds and rain then you're over ground, some people flick to the external view quickly to check this. Also your train echoes a lot more and you can hear the sound of your train bouncing off the tunnel walls when you're underground. 7. Why isn't there the option to turn on the air compressor when on the stats screen of the computer? Answer:
Re: [Audyssey] alteraeon gravekeeper's quest
Ah thought so kieth, thanks for confiring. I've done the quest twice, but the first time was in 2010, and the last time was while doing lots of other quests so I'm a little sketchy on the details. It's a fun quest either way, I particularly like how the areas get darker and more ominous as you go further down. Then again you've got some awesome quests on Kordan yet still to do none the less. Hi. Hmmm, Frotz, as in the dos program I don't know about. Win frotz as I recall just uses a standard dialogue, plus you should be able to set windows to associate all zcode files with it so all you need to to is just find the file in win explorer and hit enter. I believe Filfre does the same thing with this too. Hth. All the best, Dark. Due to Btinternet being inconvenient, this email address will not be in use for very long. Hi anita and welcome to the list. A good list of mac games can be found over at http://www.pcs-games.net/MacGame-co.htm Unfortunately there isn't half as much as compared to Windows or Ios, though also bare in mind there are a lot of games that can be played in a web browser, go and see www.whitestick.co.uk for a good list, also I believe there is a mud client for Mac that works with Vo, though since I'm not a mac user myself I'm not sure. You might also try asking on the forum over on www.audiogames.net and checking the game's database, where there are descriptions and links to download games. hth. Hi john. Manamon has lots! of gameplay, also the story and world are varstly different from pokemon, even if the tactics and setup are rather similar. I've not played the gate or psycho strike, but I can certainly say compared to paladin of the sky Manamon doesn't disappoint on the rpg tactics or gameplay front at all. Re: [Audyssey] Fw: New game! "Saga of the North Wind" -- Lead a tribe on a deadly pilgrimage to the North!
Hi jude. The Choiceofgams and hosted games titles have been known to be very accessible for years, there's quite the catalogue of both to play however the website publishes games written by many different authors, some under their choiceofgames developer name, some as "hosted games" This is why as Michael said it'd be nice to know which author wrote which games so you could more easily track the work of people you like. In fairness choice of the dragon is a bit of fun and a good introduction to the system, but it's in no way one of their better games. While I've only played a scant few of what is available, many I have enjoyed considerably. Imho the favourites have been fatehaven published as hosted games, Samurai Hyuga, (not played the second one yet but I'm looking forward to it), Mecha ace, choice of robots and zombie exodus. Choice of zombies was also extremely good as well, and I was surprised how enjoyable creatures such as we was. Hth. Re: [Audyssey] memory
Actually in terms of the sort of prophet that mainstream developers want, I don't think there are enough blind people to matter, even if everyond di! buy the game. These people talk in the millions, or at least in the hundreds of thousands, not in the hundreds or at most a couple of thousands that could be had from the accessible games community. On the other hand, indi developers would! recognize the advantage, and also tend to be much more easy to contact given that all the developers for mainstream games are hidden in bunkers somehwere and impossible to talk to, that when games aren't designed by board room committees anyway. So, mainstream no, I don't think it'll happen, but good indi games? most definitely, indeed it already has, and we're likely to see more in the future. All the best, Dark. It does not help us (blind folks), but all of Relic Entertainment's games provide subtitles for all spoken dialogue in their games, starting with Company of Heroes and onward. If we want accessible games, we are going to have to find a way to convince a mainstream developer, i.e. any company that develops mainstream games, to take a crack at creating something for us. But, and here is the thing, it has to be presented in such a way that they will be able to make a profit, i.e. we (the blind community) have to be willing to pay for it and not complain how it is not free to play. Re: [Audyssey] memory
Hi Justin. that is true, though also bare in mind there are a lot of indi graphical games as well that, while not as complex as mkx or the like still have fairly complex graphics, either way, adding even fairly standard graphics to an audiogame would be probably more work than creating the game in the first place. all the best, Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] memory
@Travis, the simple reason most audiogames don't ahve graphics is simply that graphics programming is the single most complex part of making computer games (they're not called video games for a reason). It's not just a matter of chucking a few picktures at the screne, it has animations, drawings, and compl, if it is to look appealing really! complex programming. the few games we've had that have had full graphics, the graphics have taken the lion's share of the development, which is actually another reason why it is weerd that isn't more access the other way. You are correct that text could be added for some games like the rs ones, but the vast majority of audiogames would need so much work to add graphics it'd be far more complicated than makinga new game. Also to be brutally honest, what is to stop sighted people playing audiogames anyway? Really the only people who are actively barred from audiogames are people with hearing imparements. I've played Jim kitchin's games with friends using the synth voice, and they're fine. yes, it takes a bit of adjustment, but hay, they're not called audio! games for no reason, and after all lots of sighted people listen to audio dramas, heck look at how ppular boppit has been. To answer the first question. No, it doesn't take as much room for a game for the visually impaired as it does for a sighted gamer. The reason being, although sounds can be large, (especially high-quality ones), you don't have to deal with graphics, which can eat considerably more space. My son is always buying the newest games, and these days, they're almost always several gigabytes in size. I have yet to see an audio game that packs that big of a punch, though I'm not exactly an expert on audio games for the blind, considering I'm not a fan of windows, and only recently got another windows machine which I have done without for more than 10 years. On the other hand, I'm quite a bit puzzled why absolutely no attempt is made by folks who make blind games to make them sighted friendly. Admittedly,it would take extra work, and in some cases, it might be more work than it's worth, but in general, when a game is made for the blind community, nothing is done to the game to make it be playable by sighted gamers. Sometimes, the effort is so minimal, it is laughable, and yet, developers of blind games do the very thing they accuse the sighted world of doing to us. I have never released a product that wasn't usable by both sighted and blind users alike, though again, I haven't been doing anything at all in the windows world for more than 10 years, and most of the freelance work I do has nothing to do with blind folks at all, but that's beside the point. I find it frustrating sometimes when I download a shiny new game to play, only to find that my wife and children can't enjoy the game with me, because there is no attempt made to give the sighted world any interface at all. Case in point, rs games. Except for the sounds, there's absolutely no reason whatsoever why the client can't have the text written on the screen right along with the spoken text. Instead, the sighted folks have to use the web interface wich is so plain, they don't even want to bother with it. I've been a web developer for roughly 20 years, and honestly, it's not hard to make web sites presentable to the sighted as well as the blind if it's done correctly. Yes, you'll need a sighted person to look at the thing, and say things like, move the graphic to the other side of the text, or why does that link not have a picture, but it's not a difficult process. As for the rest of your questions, I'll leave those for others, as I've gotten badly off topic with this post, and while I could rant for several pages, it's not helpful to do so, so I'll stop here, with the expectation that I'll get blasted 3 ways from sunday for daring to speak such blastphemy, and discussions of how hard and time consuming it would be to make things usable by the sighted. I don't mean full out graphics with full motion video and such, but just a little effort put into maybe having a few pictures, (or as pointed about rsgames client,) just adding text instead of having speech only. It's not hard,

Audiogames.net is intended as an index site, it points you to where games are and where you can download them, just use the link that says "download" on each game's entry page you can also use the "homepage" link to go to the website of whatever developer made the game too. there are some games (mostly text ones), played in web browsers, but the vast majority of actual audiogames you'll need to download and play on your computer. all the best, Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Actually I don't think there are any specifically 64 bit games yet, certainly crazy party isn't and will be fine on 32 bit systems. all the best, Dark. Crazy Party may not work for my laptop just because my computer is a 32 bit one. It sometimes seems like I need an upgrade before I get used to the one computer I've got. Well for now I'm just having fun with the two first games.
