Re: [h-cost] Costume events/groups in Sacramento

2017-06-08 Thread Lavolta Press
Not yet, although I need to visit the county historical society anyway.
The local building permit and other records offices dumped all their
pre-1980 records on the historical society and we want to get hold of
our house plans.

I understand that it works for some others, but I absolutely refuse to
volunteer. I've spent decades dealing with people who don't want to pay
me for my professional work and I'm not going to go there any more. I'm
just looking for social organizations.

Thanks, Fran

Have you checked the local historical society for historic homes/museums?

About 15 years ago, I attended an open house at a local historic house/museum.
Of all the beautiful artifacts, I stumbled on a dress form wearing a paper
dress. Upon inspection, it was actually a life sized “invitation” to join a
group of women who acted as living props for the museum’s open houses. I
inquired and as a result, the sewing, socializing and modeling are still a part
of my life. The ladies are so helpful and supportive of any/all sewing

I've been looking around on the net. As far as I can tell very little is going

I'm sure I'm missing something. There must be local groups who don't have much

Au rest, if anyone is thinking of moving out of the SF Bay Area, Sacramento has
much less expensive housing. Pricewise, our house here was pretty much a direct
trade for what we were paid for an undistinguished 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom house
in the Sunset district of San Francisco, complete with ancient galvanized
plumbing and gravity furnace. This area has mature trees everywhere--all the
streets, everybody's lawns, shopping malls, you name it. It's really lovely.
We love the climate (no more fog!), and there's almost no traffic (compared to
SF). You can get almost anywhere, including the suburbs, in 10-30 minutes. It's
just great.

So, if anyone has any information on what to do here I'd be grateful.

One reason for the frustrating mis-matches between story details and cover
in the mass market genre fiction industry is that cover art is much more
about conveying "brand" and sub-genre information than intended to be
illustration. The idea is to build a (somewhat arbitrary) symbolic
vocabulary that answers the buyers questions of: What general setting does
this story have? What general plot will it have? In the case of romance,
what level of sexual content will it have? And sometimes down to the level
of: what specific writing style can I expect.

The cover is intended to stop the eye of a casual bookstore browser and
communicate to them "This book is going to be similar to those other books
you liked that had covers with the same 'vocabulary' elements. Consider: the
average romance buyer isn't looking for a cover that says something like
"1480s Burgundy, lower nobility" but a cover that says something like
"middle ages, no time-travel or supernatural elements, passionate courtship
but probably little explicit sex".

The frustrating thing for an author is the cover. She tell the publisher how

My personal frustration with novels of historical fiction is when the
publishers take a piece of real art work from a period, and use it for the
another, completely wrong period.
This happened to some extent with the recent reissue of Georgette
Heyer's Georgian and Regency novels. The publishers used actual
paintings for the covers, and some of them were fine, but others had a
Georgian gentleman in a powdered wig on the cover of a Regency-set book,
or a lady in an Empire dress on a book set a couple of decades earlier.

One of my pet peeves is when a mass-market Regency romance cover
includes children - the adults' costumes are usually at least passable,
but the little girls tend to be dressed in party frocks and Mary Janes.

Re: [h-cost] costume on book covers, argh

2011-09-26 Thread Heather Rose Jones
One reason for the frustrating mis-matches between story details and cover in
the mass market genre fiction industry is that cover art is much more about
conveying "brand" and sub-genre information than intended to be illustration.
The idea is to build a (somewhat arbitrary) symbolic vocabulary that answers
the buyers questions of: What general setting does this story have? What
general plot will it have? In the case of romance, what level of sexual
content will it have? And sometimes down to the level of: what specific
writing style can I expect.

The cover is intended to stop the eye of a casual bookstore browser and
communicate to them "This book is going to be similar to those other books you
liked that had covers with the same 'vocabulary' elements. Consider: the
average romance buyer isn't looking for a cover that says something like "1480s
Burgundy, lower nobility" but a cover that says something like "middle ages, no
time-travel or supernatural elements, passionate courtship but probably little
explicit sex".

A fair number of costumes you see on the covers of books can very well come
direct from movie stills. They photoshop them to change colors and minor
details. Otherwise the dresses can be put onto models and photographed to use
for the cover shot. Recycledmoviecostumes.com has lots of pictures of dresses
that have been reused for book covers.

My favorite memory of hall costuming.

Kayta Barrows was a close friend of mine. She often judged "something"
at . . . Oh gosh. Forgot the Con name! Memorial Day in San Jose: is
that SiliCon? Kayta had been costuming longer than me, and often
helped me fit my muslins, as I helped her fit hers.

About l995 or so, Kayta was to be judging hall costumes. She had not
(for once!) helped me fit my latest costume, an 1895 bicycling outfit
with convertible skirt. Hat with matched taxidermied duck wings (a
project we had worked on, but hadn't discussed uses for). Canvas
leggins with shoebuttons. Hatpin I'd made myself. I decided to wear
the ensemble as a hall costume and surprise her. (its first outing: it
also went to Costume Con that year)

I got a small piece of white silk which fit a large brooch, and
inscribed it with the words "Fabric time machine."

Kayta spotted me from far down the hall. I knew I had her when she
doubled over with laughter.

For the person who wondered about whether it was OK to not wear a costume:
It's not required at all. I've tried to dress up for the Friday social because
it's fun, but I haven't worn hall costumes, mostly because I typically don't
have the time or luggage space to deal with anything beyond what I'm wearing
for my lectures.

There's plenty to do and see. If you love costume, you won't be bored or feel
out of place. You will very likely meet people with similar interests. When
you see people in the hall wearing costumes you like, don't hesitate to stop
them to give a compliment, or ask about how something was done. Nearly always,
they'll want to tell you all about it.

Want visuals? My friend Don McClane was the con's roving photographer last
year. He crammed his 400 favorite images into a three-and-a-half-minute
slideshow overview, here:

You'll see images from the hallway, classes, doll competition, masquerades,

to leave him a comment.

I encourage people to go to Costume-Con regardless of your level of
costuming experience. I have been to two CC and find the people SO
friendly. They love to talk about their costumes and how they made them.
Last year I did meet more h-costumers than the one at Baltimore. The CCs
seem to take on the personality of the location. Both years were so
different. I do like when the event is all on one floor of the hotel...more
people seem to get to mingle.

Last year the topic came up on h-costume about newbies worried that they
didn't have a costume to wear. I haven't worn a costume either year and
didn't feel bad and no one treated me differently. I am there as press and
photographing, so it is not practical for me to wear a costume. When Robin
first met me at CC, I was laying in the floor photographing costume details.

One of the things that I really enjoy about CC is meeting costumers of all
ages. Last year we had a blast photographing a little girl in an 18th
Century costume. She stole our hearts! We met some mothers who designed
costumes for their children. It was a chance for them to brag about their
creations...child and costume.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Being a panelist at a Costume Con doesn't mean that anyone will think you
are an expert, only that you may have a different perspective on t he
topic than the costumer sitting next to you. At my first CC, I Was on
one panel, it was bit intimidiating ofr me (and I didn't even KNOW
anyoneyet!) but the moderator made sure to give me a bit of time to
explain "how I did things" so at least I felt I added a voice to the
topic.

Please do come; you don't have to be a panelist, but it is just SO
WONDERFUL to be with a large group of like-minded people who understand
what you love to do and why you do it.

IT's about that simple.

So come for whatever parts of it you can--I guanrantee you'll have a

I realize that Costume Con is run entirely by volunteers, but, at the only
one I attended, I found the education sessions to be distinctly sub-par.
When I told a costumer friend about that later, she said, Well, you don't go
to Costume Con for the education, you go for the masquerades. I was only
able to attend the historical masquerade, and it was very good--I was,
indeed, impressed with the tech crew. And I found the marketplace excellent.

I didn't know until the last minute that I would be going; if the stars
ever align again, I hope I can plan enough in advance to offer to be on a
panel myself.

That's me! :) Hi, Stacey!

I like to think I still make amazing dolls, and collect other amazing dolls,
all of which I then costume. :)

Stacey, if you make up one of the "Single Patterns" and cannot make it to the
Fashion Show, you can, if you chose, designate someone else to show it off for
you. The three patterns from which you may chose are found on this page:

*

The Masquerades are Not balls, despite their names, but costume contests with
skits which may have music, spoken word, narration (pre-recorded or read by the
Master of Ceremonies), etc. and theatrical lighting. Sound & lights done by a
fabulous Tech crew.

If you would like to enter a costume in a contest, please email me privately,
as it is off-topic for this list.

The best historic costumes at CC can stand up against any other recreation I've
seen. The worst, well, are less good, and that's the case with any venue.

Your registration allows you to do anything and everything! Ok, you are
on your own for sleeping (commute, hotel room...) and in general for
food, although the 'con suite'/hospitality room usually has munchies of
various things and sometimes actual food (depending on who's running it
and the budget). your badge lets you into panels, workshops (check if
there's any materials fee, sometimes there is. might be like.. $10 or
so), con suite, all stage activities (SF/F masquerade, Historic
masquerade, single pattern contest, future fashion show..), any exhibit
room they have and the dealers room where you can shop for neat stuff.
There is usually a Friday Night social (yes, that's included), and there
are often day trips. Basically, anything going on at the convention,
you're registration includes!

they are lots of fun.

May I suggest that you might start with the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) for
the costume nomen. This presentation makes great clarity at least to me as the
major explanation of the difference between historical garmentents and context
with the history that they are trying to represent.

Re: [h-cost] costume

2010-10-12 Thread Liz Herman
I generally consider "costume" to mean something not intended for wearing for
other than a party, play, or trick-or-treat.

Only reason my outfit for MD Ren. Fest. gets "garb" and often just "clothes"
instead of "costume" is that it tends to get a real workout... from a few
singes from helping put out a small fire, to running all over the place,
spilling "stuff" on it, sitting around (managing to sew the skirt to something
*once), singing, kitchen duty, etc.

Now if I get around to finishing my "faire outfit for play"...*that'll*
probably get referred to as costume... garb would be at a pinch.

Kinda like it's rare to see someone wear a "national costume" and ever do any
real work while wearing it... but "traditional clothes" are sometimes worn
 By someone at work :-)

in an issue numbered somewhere in the 30s for issue or volume number.  Does
this ring a bell for anyone?  If someone can send me the article or the
volume/issue number or an online link I can start sooner.  If anyone has the

There is some dressing up during the day, but as you thought, no
farthingales or the like because of the limited space in classrooms. I
attended a basic knitting class with Alice (of Alice in Wonderland fame)
two years ago. Of course, wearing your undies to Sunday breakfast is one

Re: [h-cost] Costume College

2009-07-15 Thread Kimiko Small

It all depends on the people. Yes, there will be some people dressed during the
day. Some don't attend classes, or just a few and just hang out to chat and
take photos in the pretty garden area between the two buildings (main building
and the Tower). Those who are in classes are asked not to wear anything large,
so I've seen small bustles, but no major hoops. Most are wearing regular street
clothes, or costumes that are easy to wear. You will want to wear layers, like
a sweater or light jacket, because you never know if your classroom is one that
will be hot, or really cold from the a/c and number of people in them.

And Sunday Undies is a chance to show off your undergarments, and some will
wear a light covering, like a kimono, over their period undies.

I'll be there, but I still don't know how I'm going to dress for Saturday

always just too warm and close for me to dress up during the day, and it's
hard to sit in a class in a farthingale. :) I have the new Elizabethan to

Yes, there is. I've taken lots of pics of others in the past. My concern was

There will be (I believe) a "red carpet" photographing event
before/during the Gala. In a side room, a costume photography area is
set up and people can take pictures/have pictures taken. I think that
some pretty nice pictures came out of last year's red carpet session. I
don't think that you have to be a Gala attendee to have your picture

If I can make a new large ruff in time, my b&w gown of the 1590s. Not sure
when, as I am not doing the Gala, but I would love to get photos of me wearing
it, but have friends who will want to go elsewhere for dinner.

Will be wearing the effigy undies on Sunday, although not with period drawers
unless I get off my behind and make those, too. I have a plain modern set of
drawers that I wear.

I think this is the first time I've planned on dressing up since my first CC
