Back to the question though. Does this indicate that root is mounted

[Hampshire] Is root mounted twice

2020-04-04 Thread Mike Burrows via Hampshire

Hello Folks.

Its been many years since I have posted to this list. (i wonder if Hugo
is still around). I do however still subscribe and follow the threads
with interest from far off Alabama. Keep up the good work and stay safe.

I have a quick question. My rpi is giving me root is full errors and
wont accept configuration edits. This is the output from df:

pi@raspi ~ $ df -h
Filesystem  Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
rootfs  3.5G  3.1G  194M  95% /
/dev/root   3.5G  3.1G  194M  95% /
devtmpfs    460M  4.0K  460M   1% /dev
tmpfs    93M  284K   93M   1% /run
tmpfs   5.0M 0  5.0M   0% /run/lock
tmpfs   186M 0  186M   0% /run/shm
/dev/mmcblk0p1   56M   20M   37M  35% /boot
tmpfs   186M 0  186M   0% /tmp

its an 8 gig card.

Is this showing root mounted twice or perhaps...could somebody help me
understand the first two lines please?

TIA

Mike

Hi Lisi.

No ma'am. Followed the release notes to go from squeeze to wheezy, then
wheezy to jessie

That said. I am not sure that even the first upgrade happened because...

In both cases, the apt-get upgrade finishes with a bunch of high to low

does this mean the upgrade hasn't worked? This is the first one on the list:

mysql-5.5 (5.5.33+dfsg-0+wheezy1) wheezy-security; urgency=high

creates a database "test" and sets up permissions that allow anonymous
access, without a password, from localhost to the "test" database and

  after installing mysql-server.

This is the code before the change logs are read:

290 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 830 not upgraded.

After this operation, 13.5 MB disk space will be freed.

I am managing a network which is setup with several wireless W7
clients connecting via a Netgear R6300 to an XP Pro hosted share
as well as one W7 wired client.

The wireless clients can "see" the XP Pro machine in their network
window and can map to a shared folder and work just fine. The
wired client however, cannot. It can however ping the XP Pro
machine using its IP address and name.

Any clues please?

Does this help:

Thx Peter. :) Network discovery is on.

Judging by google-land this isn't a new or an infrequent problem. None
of the fixes out there that I have found seem to help. Boy I wish all
the servers out there were Linux ones.

Could there be a difference in the router between the way it handles

I agree. It seems strange that the resolution on phones is getting so
good, and the resolution on laptops and desktops is getting worse?
With your 10Mega Pixel cameras, surely you need laptop and desktop
screens being much better than they see to be right now.

Just this second got around to read Linus' comments about the new Google
Chromebook. 13" screen, with a resolution of 2560 x 1700.

That's a decent resolution (and it's even 4:3, for those who don't like
widescreen). Since Linus wants to get one, probably won't be long before
full Linux is running on it.

You can already do that, with some tinkering - you have to put in
developer mode

first, to be able to boot something other than signed Chrome OS.

I found an account somewhere by someone who put Mint on it. It needs drivers
for the trackpad and touchscreen, which are available but aren't in the
distros yet.

On 02/13/2013 04:31 PM, Ally Biggs wrote:

Do you guys ever think there will be a day that Linux will be as popular as
Windows in the desktop market.

Personally I can't see this happening anytime soon. This isn't a personal
attack on Linux just want to get some thoughts and inspiration.

I use both Windows and Linux have a strong interest in both but currently am
having a tug of war with my thought patterns career wise. The majority of my
thoughts are saying focus on learning Linux starting with Linux+ with the
eventual aim of going for the RHCSE. The other half is saying go down the
Microsoft route taking a client exam and going for the server 2012 admin certs.
There are other Linux certifications. LPI is the other one that comes to
mind, but RH seems to be the most recognised.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?
I would say that I enjoy Linux more the whole Open source ethos, I actually
feel like I am learning when using the cli as opposed to clicking my way
through the GUI in Windows.

Making the transition from Windows to Linux was challenging initially I
probably will continue to learn Linux (Redhat, Debian) for server related tasks
and use Win 7 for client tasks

The thing which bothers me though about Linux ok it's free and if you have the
skills you can do great things but why isn't it being adopted more for everyday
use. Also why don't the developers standardise a distribution for the home user
i.e same package manager and packages.
1. Why does everybody have the "must use Windows" urge? Default choice,
what they use at work, what their friends / family use. It feels like a
safe choice. Anything else is for geeks.
Also alien mind control. Have you seen Men in Black? Steve
Balmer, huh? Not much of a disguise etc.
2. Why don't developers standardise? It's not the nature of free
software. Nobody in charge. Everybody has their own ideas of how to do
stuff. I wouldn't have it any other way.

The problem with desktop Linux I think is when the shit hits the fan and
something needs to be configured or a driver needs to be added your average
user isn't going to want to sit typing commands in a terminal or spending hours
finding the solution into a community.

The other problem I found is the community alot of people expect you to be some
kind of command line genius who is capable of reciting the whole encyclopaedia
of man pages. So when you ask for help or guidance you often get a dismissive
response.

Documentation is horrendous aswell especially if you are making the transition
from Windows. Pick up a starting to learn Linux book and a couple of pages in
you end up with the worlds worst headache.

So how did you guys learn Linux?
Has anyone else made the transition from Windows? Or what are the key areas to
focus on to develop a good foundation. Need some inspiration if I go down the
Linux route would I be missing out on much? Please help me resolve the tug of
war it is driving me mad :)
Most people learned by using it, bit by bit. Try different distros. Try
different desktop environments

You can't learn everything at once - figure out how to do things that
interest you, so software related to music, graphics, games, or whatever.

Use the command line, you'll get used to it. I'm constantly frustrated
when GUI tools don't work the way I want them to. Shell scripts are
amazingly useful for odd admin jobs.

There are a number of MIDI->USB devices available and Linux supports
generic USB-MIDI, so in principle it should work OK. I _suspect_ that
most will work 'out of the box', but as usual it's sensible to try and
prove that.

The cheapest two from DV247.com both claim 'class compliant' or 'no

If you have a sound card with a 5-pin DIN, it may support MIDI that way,
too.

There are lots of MIDI players, though it isn't always so easy to get
them working properly, owing I think to some flux between Jack and Alsa.

Of course the sounds vary as you're recording the commands, not the
audio.

BTW, I use "PianoTeq Play",which is a good piano modeller and runs on
Linux. Needs a reasonably quick CPU to avoid drop-outs. Commercial, but
low cost and very convincing.

I have a couple of M-Audio midi keyboards and a Roland digital piano,
All work out of the box with Linux, via USB-midi. The research I did
when buying these suggested that most midi keyboards are class
compliant and work with Linux. I haven't tried midi via a dedicated
midi lead, but I gather that usually works too.

I also use Pianoteq - I have the standard version - Pianoteq Play
wasn't out when I bought it. Pianoteq has a record button, you
don't need any extra software to record from it.

I also use Handbrake. You need libdvdcss as well to rip commercial DVDs.
This is usually in a separate repository for whichever distro

Handbrake can produce mp4s or MKVs, with multiple audio tracks
(different languages for example) and subtitles.

Since you mentioned codecs, this would usually be H264 / x264 for
video and a choice of AAC or AC3 for audio. AAC is probably better.

Is there anything i can do to roll back to my earlier version please?

Restore from the backup you made before upgrading? [:-)]

Hi Keith I didn't backup the system because I was only using the box as
a file server and I have the files duplicated elsewhere.

Correct me if I am wrong, I do not believe I have upgraded the kernel,
simply various packages to "squeeze". Otherwise the udev wouldn't have
issue the warning would it? Anyhow, I am confident enough to give your
method a try.

What I would caution, though, is this: before following any advice, either
from me or anyone else, make sure you either a) understand what the advice
is telling you to do or b) are prepared to lose all your data, system
configuration, etc.
Thanks also for the advice. You make the same point as Mr.
Courtier-Dutton though somewhat more tactfully. :)

Hello James.

Thanks for the advice. Incidentally if you read my post closely, you
will note that the googling was an attempt to seek a solution after
completing the upgrade. To be clear, the warning message during the
upgrade of udev suggested possible not definite instability issues so I
chose to not heed the package maintainers warning. oh well.

What is your take on this development? will anyone be converting to
Chrome from another browser because of this? it is a good/bad thing?

My annoyance here is the same as my annoyance with Silverlight - video
sites (netflix et al) are finding more and more ways to prevent access
from our favourite OS because of the Movie/TV studio requirement for
DRM on all streams. With flash leaving the playing field, we're losing
the last remaining compatible solution that the studios may have
agreed to a video site using.

I'm not worried at the moment.

1) Adobe said they will support Flash for 5 years, which I don't believe but
two years is probably more reaslistic and better than nothing.

2) Flash is on it's way out, so by the time they drop support for Flash off
Mozilla it won't matter.

3) There is plenty of time for Mozilla to pick up support for the new Google
style plug-in if it's usful for them to do.

It's one reason to avoind proprietary stuff where you have no control if they
suddenly decide (for what ever reason) to pull the plug.

The most common speculation around is that Flash will be replaced by
HTML 5. The lack of Flash on iOS seems to have given this a push. There
is therefore an argument going on about DRM on HTML 5 embedded
video. Google, Microsoft and Netflix have put forward a proposal for
this which some bloke from W3C hates. I don't have a link for this
to hand at present.

HTML5 video already works on Linux in Firefox and Chrome - I
occasionally get this from YouTube - I notice because FlashBlock doesn't
kick in, and it just plays the video. What HTML 5 DRM will do is probably:
annoy lots of people
fail to protect their content
fail to work in all browsers
produce several Firefox plug-ins to rip it

Re: [Hampshire] VDSL equipment

2012-01-04 Thread Mike Austin
>>Is there a set top box out there that basically does the job of a TiVO or
BT
homehub/infinitiy/whateveritscalled but is not tied to a particular ISP?<<

Rob,

If you are just after freeview TV, the ability to record, and stream content
such as iPlayer, there are several DVRs out there that will do the job with
a BT Infinity connection. If they are DLNA certified they can also be used
to stream content from PCs and NAS drives. I am using TVmobili to watch
content from my lady's PC in Egham. She has the BT Infinity installation.
That required me to set up port forwarding in her homehub.

As far as I can determine by looking through all the config settings of the
homehub, you can substitute your own router attached to the BT modem.

Two of the best DVRs are made by Humax and Sony. If you are using an older
TV, not all DVRs have SCART.

I have a TIVO box connected to my Virgin Cable installation. It is very
good, but I have yet to crack controlling it using my slingbox. I spent
nine years living in Cyprus, so obtaining UK TV was a challenge - I
installed a 4.2 metre dish on our building but had the backup of using my UK
based slingbox when the signal faded.

I am off to the ski slopes shortly, and access my slingbox from Switzerland
as most hotels have limited UK TV.
I can access it from my Galaxy S11.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Re: [Hampshire] VDSL equipment

2012-01-02 Thread Mike Austin
I have experience of both the Virgin Media cable broadband and BT Infinity,
which my lady has at her home. It is worth explaining the difference to
help understand their use.

In both cases the fibre optic cable is fed to a box in the street somewhere
near your home. With Virgin, the broadband signal is fed to the house via a
coaxial cable with separate phone line. In my case the coaxial cable also
supplies my television signal.

In the case of the BT Infinity connection, a two core copper cable is fed to
the house and carries your telephone and broadband data.

The standard installation involves replacing your primary telephone socket
at the first point of entry of the BT line into your home. The new face
socket has a VDSL outlet to the modem, and a standard telephone outlet. BT
provided a Homehub router wired to the modem. Any telephone extensions are
fed from the new box and do not require a separate filter. You are then
faced with a choice of using wireless or powerline plugs if your desktop is
elsewhere.

Incidentally, some of the latest powerline plugs include wireless
capability. Since I run three WAPs in my own home, on different channels
with different SSIDs, they could have been useful.

In reality, you can move the new telephone socket to a more convenient point
in your home if you have suitable wiring already installed, as most homes
should. The installation engineer may baulk at this as they prefer not to
use your existing wiring.

If anyone wants me to explain the procedure, I will do a follow up.

Re: [Hampshire] Linux Answers

2011-12-27 Thread Mike Austin
Perhaps this thread should become "What's In A Name?". Words often change
their usage and, therefore, meaning. 50 years ago the word gay had a
different meaning than now. Google used to be just the name of a search
engine, but now it is also used as a verb.

When I started computing PC stood for Personal Computer. These days it is
largely used to describe a computer running Windows.

While the purist may seek to clearly define Linux, it has come to be
recognised as any operating system using the Linux Kernel. There is one
exception that I will come to shortly.

Several members of my PC-answers group look upon me as a geek as I have
moved to a Linux OS. This geek image is quite common among those who have
never used Linux. Just today, one of the members of my PC group wrote
"Being somewhat risk averse stops me from spending all my time getting
buried into 'Linux' and alternative technology"

Interestingly, the person who wrote that is having an issue accessing his IP
security cameras from his Asus Transformer which, as we know, uses the Linux
Kernel! So, Android users are not in the geek category.

Few, if any, of my PC group would join a LUG as they are perceived as geeky.
I created my Linux-answers group to act as a halfway house as they
experiment with the use of a Linux distro. I recommend they use Mint as a
starter.

I will create guides with screenshots to post on our associated Google site
to assist them. Hopefully, those of you who have joined will find the time
to add your knowledge to help others.

Happy New Year,

Mike

Re: [Hampshire] Linux Answers,

I am staggered that the choice of the name of my group should cause so much
comment. Perhaps I should ask the editors of Linux Format magazine to be
more specific about their content.

Perhaps I should also contact Amadeus, one of the major players in the
travel industry, to ask what they mean by the statement " Airline IT systems
and transactions business company Amadeus yesterday announced it will
completely migrate its commercial airline transaction processing systems
onto Linux by 2012, saying proprietary platforms were "very limiting" and
criticised the lack of open standards in the industry."

Since the name of the group is also the email address -
linux-answ...@googlegroups.com - I attempted to keep it as short as I could.

Fortunately the several members of this LUG who have already joined
understand my intent.

[Hampshire] Linux Answers

2011-12-22 Thread Mike Austin
I have to apologise for not being very active in the group, but I have had a
very busy year after I recovered from a very nasty illness. I intend to
attend some meetings next year, as I am not that far away in Port Solent.

You may recall my mentioning, in previous posts, that I run an online group
called PC-answers which is primarily for Windoze users. I have been helping
several of the members kick the "Windows Addiction" and take the plunge into
the world of Linux.

As a result, I have created another group called Linux-answers. The format
is somewhat different to our Lug as the membership is worldwide, members may
post in HTML to include screenshots to help newbies, and attachments such as
pdf files are permitted. Members can also choose how to receive posts to
the group e.g. all mail, abridged mail, or weekly digests.

The principal objective is to help newbies, so the content will not be as
high-tech as on our group - initially anyway.

Should anyone be interested, you can apply to join at
http://groups.google.com/group/linux-answers

Season's greetings,

On the easier subject of USB / PS2 connectors, my experience has been that
ps2 to USB adaptors work for meece and not for keyboards. This is limited
to a few systems and a few keyboards, so it may not be universal. I am
currently using a 2 x ps2 to USB adaptor such as you describe but only
the mouse is connected through it.

I sometimes see a delay of several seconds in the mouse becoming
usable after KVM switchover, so the arrangement isn't ideal.

yes.

Please post your configuration file here, plus the output of...
id ftp
ps -ef | grep [v]sftpd
ls -la /home/ftp

Without that information we are just guessing.

Anonymous users should be chrooted into the home directory of the 'ftp'
user.

for more information you can also set these parameters
dual_log_enable=YES
log_ftp_protocol=YES
and restart the service. Then show us your logs.

Regards,

Stuart

Hi Stuart. thanks for adding this advice. The anonymous user is already
limited to /home/ftp as root. I am guessing the install does that by
default. "id ftp" returns:

testermike@eddie:~$ sudo id ftp
uid=111(ftp) gid=65534(nogroup) groups=65534(nogroup)
testermike@eddie:~$

however when i chowned the /home/ftp directory to nogroup the system
reported nogroup as invalid. Any how i wont bore you with the logs
because I am wondering why I am bothering with anonymous at all. The FTP
server will be hanging off a church network and I am thinking it only
makes sense to allow access to known users anyway.

would you all agree?

I change the onership of /home/ftp to both nobody and ftp changing the
group permissions to g+w in both cases and although I can connect to the

As an addition the anonymous user cant download files, regardless of the
/home/ftp folder permissions. :(

The owner or group ID of vsftp must be writeable to that folder, doesn't have
to be 666/777, but say vsftp user is vsftp and group is vsftp, just make the
folder writeable to that group, chown :vsftp /home/ftp; chmod g+w /home/ftp

Either UID or GID writable will work, but if the folder is owned by your user
too, you may just want to make the folder that vsftp writeable to group.

Thanks for the tips. Haven't had a chance to try this yet but I will. As
a more general thought...I am going to use this server to allow
volunteers at my church to access media for of site slide prep. Given
there are only a handful, would it not be simpler a maybe safer to give
them accounts on the ftp server and have them login securely?

I am messing with the above on my home Ubuntu Hardy Server. When I
first set up the ftp server I could login anonymously but could not

But then when I logout I cannot log back in. Changing permissions to
755 allows the login again but then I cannot upload!

I should add that I had changed vsftpd.conf to allow anon upload.

Vic,

It depends what Distro version you use. The latest version of Calibre is
not available in the package manager of Ubuntu 10.4 LTS 64 BIT. It offers
version 0.6.42

By using the Binary install I have version 0.8.17

[Hampshire] Kindle and Calibre

2011-09-06 Thread Mike Austin
Kindle e-reader and Calibre are an excellent combination. Although I do not
own an e-reader device, such as a Kindle, I use my desktop and notebook,
which both run Linux, and Android tablet.
On the Linux machines I run Kindle for Windows in a "Bottle of Crossover
Wine".

I also run Calibre for Linux. By configuring Kindle to share the data
folder used by Calibre, I have the full benefit of both applications.

You can obtain Calibre for Linux at http://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux

I recommend the binary install.

I will bring my notebook to a future meeting if anyone wants a demo.

[Hampshire] Backup solution - SDLT worth it?

2011-07-28 Thread Mike Austin
Hi Rob,

Have you considered a RAID 1 configuration with two 2TB drives. I am
presently running two 1TB drives using software RAID and Ubuntu 10.4. This
allows me to have other operating systems e.g. XP, on other hard drives.

If you have a motherboard with hardware RAID support in the BIOS, it is
easier to setup than software RAID. However, Ubuntu have dropped hardware
RAID support with 11.04.

Obviously if you are concerned about loss of your computer, then RAID is not
the best option.

Hi Mike, you've got some useful stuff to try from others in the thread.

When you're changing sshd_config you're restarting sshd afterwards?

>From an Internet-based Linux host, does "nc some.dyndns.org
<http://some.dyndns.org> " produce an openssh banner?

My next steps would be ssh -v on client side and a simultaneous
multitail on /var/log/auth.log on the server.

When running Internet-facing ssh it would be prudent to look into
running some means of defence against the inevitable intrusion
attempts. Look at DenyHosts and fail2ban - both are packages in
Ubuntu/Debian.

Security through obscurity may be scoffed at but imho it's a good way
to counter unstructured attacks.

Thanks Imran and to others for the great advice. I will be going through
all the posts. However, what I would really like to understand is why
does simply changing the port number and nothing else render the server
inaccessible?

- change the port to listen on in sshd_config to some other random port

- open port forwarding in the router for that port, to the server

- use the shell script mentioned before i get this error:

what else needs changing to allow the use of a non-standard port?

I've seen something similar in the past. Some routers simply don't NAT

packets for addresses they haven't handed out via DHCP. I guess it's some

Re: [Hampshire] Wireless Repeaters

2011-06-14 Thread Mike Burrows

Hello Rob.

I have a Linksys wrt 54 and wap54 acting in the mode i think you are trying

However, and I believe this may be crucial, I have not found anywhere
how to set this up on its own. For example, with it configured, I
would guess I need to unplug it, relocate it such it's equidistant
between the wireless router and the client machine, plug it in to the
power (no LAN cable) and all will be well. Is this not so?

The wap54 is connected to the LAN. (configured as you describe) the wrt
is connected to an xbox :) via an ethernet cable all devices are on the
same ip address scheme and mask. No DHCP running

2) The device has several "modes" of which I've set it to Wireless
Repeater and configured it with exactly the same parameters (same
name, channel, SSID, pre-shared key) etc as the wireless router. Is
this right or should I have called it mynet2 which extends mynet as
opposed to mynet (mynet being the name of the original wifi network)?

I use the same SSID for all devices. Its puzzled me because you cant
tell if a device is connecting to the WAP or WRT. Doesn't seem toeffect
the price of chips tho'.

3) As it wasn't working, I recently reconnected it up in the study via
lan cable and was dismayed to see it asking me to go through the
wizard. I would presume that all the time it had been relocated
without the LAN cable, it had been wanting this too - am I wrong?

Not sure about this one

4) I guess in summary my question is: do wireless repeaters require a
cabled connection to the LAN or do they take the existing wifi
connection and boost it? This is what I asked of the Novatech
employee before buying it and he was convinced it would do the trick -
but then again I guess he was a salesman!

I would say a 40 quid one would need LAN

The Linksys website has some good info on setting up this sort of thing.
sorry I am at work and dont have the link :(

Any advice very welcome.

[Hampshire] FW: Home network cabling

2011-06-12 Thread Mike Austin
In my last home, an apartment in Cyprus, I went to the trouble of feeding
150 metres of Cat5 cable through the building to connect the three other
flats to my system. I my UK home I have resorted to Devolo Powerline
adapters. I have two feeding switches - 8 and 5 port - while the fourth
feeds a Belkin wireless access point and a 1watt amplifier to the external
directional aerial.

This gives me a hotspot for access across the marina by my yachtie mates.
It runs on its own SSID and channel, independent of the host router and is
configured for access by MAC address approval.

I would need a special reason to go for the CAT5 wired option havng
experienced using Powerline Adapters.

[Hampshire] Dual Boot using Raid 1

2011-05-12 Thread Mike Austin
Although Ubuntu is my primary OS, I still need to use XP for some of my
media software for which there is no Linux equivalent or will not run in
Crossover WINE. The software is required for some of my media hardware e.g.
I have three Slingboxes and a Pinnacle Media streamer on my network. One
Slingbox controls my VirginMedia TIVO box while the other two are for access
by friends and family outside the UK, giving them Freeview TV. My Broadband
has a 5MB upload speed so streaming quality is very good.

My dual boot desktop has dedicated HDs for XP and Ubuntu, with other drives
storing backup and media data files.

Following an upgrade of my desktop motherboard etc, I wish to create a dual
boot system using 2 identical 1TB drives in Raid 1 (mirrored) configuration.
I believe that I cannot have XP and Ubuntu on the same master drive, but
will need to have XP on a 3rd drive. I can have 6 SATA devices on my
motherboard, so 5 HDs.

Another problem is that I want the media files used by the XP applications
to be on the Raid drives, as a backup, on a NTFS partition.

The use of RAID could be a discussion item at the LUG meeting on Saturday.
See you there - I'll be the one with the Macbook Pro!

Re: [Hampshire] Wireless repeater / bridge

2011-04-25 Thread Mike Austin
Further to my previous post, it is worth expanding on the advantages of
using Wireless Access Points v Range Extenders.

Range Extenders are co-dependant on the host router. They must use the same
SSID, password and frequency (channel) as the router.

As Vic said "WiFi is necessarily half-duplex in operation, so every time you
have to re-transmit a packet, you're halving your data rate. Add a few
repeaters, and things can end up at a crawl..."

That is my experience too. When I first installed the dual mode Belkin
WAP/Range Extenders, I used them in extender mode.

When I added Powerline Adapters to my network, I reconfigured the Belkins as
WAPs.

WAPs are inter-dependant of the host router and can use different SSIDs,
passwords and frequencies. On the subject of frequencies, most people do
not bother to change the default channel of their router. This can lead to
overcrowding of the channels in the 2.4 GHz frequency range.

Before setting up a wireless network, it is worth scanning for all the SSIDs
in range and noting the channels being used. Then you can select channels
that are free of traffic.

If you are intending to use your network over a wide area it is worth
looking at http://www.wifi-antennas.co.uk/

Re: [Hampshire] Wireless repeater / bridge

2011-04-24 Thread Mike Austin
>>... it's time to build some wireless access points / repeaters! I have a
few laptops kicking about, with wireless cards, so I figured I could dot
these about and build a wireless network that way!<<

Stephen,

Another approach to extend wireless coverage is to use Wireless Access
points. I gave up with Netgear Wireless Extenders and now use Belkin
F5D7132UK Wireless Access Points that also double as Range Extenders.

Using Powerline Network adapters I can place these WAPS wherever I have a
power outlet and set up a Wireless Access point. Unlike Range Extenders, I
can use different SSIDs for each WAP - I have three.

While discussing Powerline Adapters - I use Devolo - you can add a switch to
each adapter to increase the number of wired devices - I have 13. You will
read that the Powerline Adapters cannot be used with power extension leads.
However, all of mine do so but they will not work via a surge protector.

To recap, each of my WAPs connects to a Powerline Adapter via a switch. I
have two 5 port and one 8 port switches. Novatech sell a 5 port switch for
around £11.

One of the WAPs is connected to a 1 watt amplifier and external aerial to
give me coverage accross the marina where I live.

For good measure, I have a Janus High Power 802.11 b/g/n USB Adapter. This
works out of the box with the latest Linux kernel (unlike Windoze) and gives
extended range and signal strength when plugged into my notebook or netbook.

My three storey home has electric heating in all ceilings and the matting
reduces the range between floors.

I hope this is useful to you and other members.

Re: [Hampshire] External Drive Permissions.

2011-03-25 Thread Mike Burrows

I think the mount options are typically "user, noauto" so it doesn't auto mount
until requested but when it is requested the user who mounts it owns it and
can mount/umount it in the first place.

On a modern Debian system with a full-fat desktop I think this is
automatically taken care for you.

Reading some of the bumph, it looks like one has a choice between auto
and noauto and so as I am using the external hhd as a samba share for
windows clients on the network. If a device is set to mount auto at

Test it locally

sudo mkdir /tmp/extdrive

#this means mount the block device /dev/sda1 at location /tmp/extdrive,
#read-write permissions with user id of 900
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /tmp/extdrive -o rw,uid=900

#Same thing but with your own uid, backticks mean run this command + get
#the result..
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /tmp/extdrive -o rw,uid=`id -u`

Changing ownership or permissions of the /dev block device is not the
solution.

Well I modified the above to:

sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /media/mybook -o rw,uid=1000,gid=1000

ls -l /media/mybook - shows all the files and folders on the external hard
drive listed as non root user and group.

However, trying to modify files in the non-root gui isn't possible and user
1000 only has read permissions

can't help thinking there is a better way of doing this in fstab...

Where am I going wrong please?

[Hampshire] Dual boot Raid 1

2011-03-04 Thread Mike Austin
I am about to embark setting up RAID 1 (mirroring) with two identical 1TB
drives on my newly upgraded desktop.  Although it is a bit more fiddly using
Linux, it would not normally be a problem.

However, I run a dual boot desktop with XP.  I cannot see that I can do so
having both Ubuntu and XP on the same master 1TB drive.

In the past I have run dual boot using separate drives and think this is my
only solution.

As I can run up to six SATA drives, that is no problem  My plan is to
install XP on its own drive.  Then I install Ubuntu as a dual boot setup on
one of the 1TB drives and configure RAID 1 at the same time.

Any thoughts from some of you?

I would prefer just using the two drives as Ubuntu shares data files, which
I would like mirrored, with XP.  I need XP for some of my media applications
as there is no Linux equivalent and they will not run in WINE, even the
latest version.

Re: [Hampshire] Introduction

2011-03-04 Thread Mike Austin
>> I am currently trying to install V.Box on Ubuntu 10.10 and keep getting
the re-install option, I can't see that I have missed any of the
pre-requisites and I would like a pointer as to a likely direction for
trouble shooting.<<

Mike,

The simplest method is to download the appropriate package from the
Virtualbox site - in your case Ubuntu 10.10 ("Maverick Meerkat") 32 bit.

When you install the package, and installation is complete, you will again
see the option to install - ignore it and close.

You should then see the Vbox icon in System Tools

Using Synaptic, check to see that DKMS is installed, if not do so, to ensure
that the VirtualBox host kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt and vboxnetadp)
are properly updated if the Linux kernel version changes during the next
apt-get upgrade. For Debian it is available in Lenny backports and in the
normal repository for Squeeze and later. The dkms package can be installed
through the Synaptic Package manager or through the following command:

sudo apt-get install dkms

The main issue you may have is adding USB2 support for guest operating
systems - Ubuntu is the host. You can download the extension pack from the
VirtualBox Homepage. You may need to read up on support for USB 2.0
devices, VirtualBox RDP and PXE boot for Intel cards.

I installed Vbox for Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit a couple of days ago. You need to
think about how much of your 2GB RAM you assign to your guest OS. If you
are installing XP you should get away with 512 for basic use. I am
fortunate to have a desktop with 6GB RAM.

Good luck,

Mike

[Hampshire] Mobile Technology

2011-03-04 Thread Mike Austin
I have been using a Google mobile phone since they were first available in
the US - now sold in the UK as the Nexus One. You will be aware that the
operating system, Android, is a Linux system created by Google and now the
most popular OS for small screen smartphones. I am running the latest
version, Android Gingerbread. You may not be aware of Android Honeycomb,
which has developed for the new generation of Tablets and Netbooks. I have
been reviewing the recently unveiled range of Asus netbooks and tablets
which use Android Honeycomb - impressive. As users become more familiar with
Android - often not realising they are using Linux - they will want the same
features on their PCs. Google intend to develop a Linux Distro for desktop
PCs. That is when Linux will gain a real increase in usage by the general
public.

Today's Smartphone is really a mini computer with mobile phone capability.

Yesterday I tested an interesting use of technology with the Android app,
"Latitude". I drove from Portsmouth to Egham, Nr Windsor. Before leaving I
sent an email invitation for the owner of the house to track my progress on
the internet.

With the GPS of my mobile sending my position, she could monitor my progress
on Google maps. The end result was a freshly boiled kettle on my arrival -
too early for a G&T.

Using my mobile, I have just checked in for my BA flight to Zurich tomorrow.
Furthermore I have downloaded my boarding pass which, using its barcode,
will take me through the various formalities before boarding the aircraft.

While skiing in Wengen, I will make use of the hotel's wifi to run Skype on
my mobile - my account gives me free calls to UK landlines.

In the mornings I am able to watch the BBC News and UK TV on my mobile, from
a Slingbox in my UK home. I can also use the SKY1 app to view Sky TV
schedules and send a signal to my Sky receiver to record programmes I wish
to watch on my return.

I forgot - I can also use my Smartphone as a mobile!!

[Hampshire] [OT] Wireless Network slowness.

2011-03-03 Thread Mike Burrows

Hi folks.

I have a WAP54G acting as a Wireless Repeater. The other end of the
"connection" is a WRT54G connected to an XBox. When the WRT is connected
to the network, with or without the XBox streaming, the download speed
(according to www.speakeasy.net) is about 1/3 of the speed of when the
WRT54 is disconnected.

in this configuration, I am not sure to which wireless receiver, client
pc's are connecting. Indeed, I don't know how clients decide between the
WAP and the WRT when both are in range.

Any illumination would be gratefully recieved.

Hi Tony,

I have just checked on the Crossover site and Movie Maker is not known to
work in Crossover. I do not have the knowledge to suggest a Linux
alternative.

I spend quite a chunk of my time helping Windoze addicts break their habit,
but it is a powerful drug, particularly if used over a long period. Both
Crossover and Virtualbox helped me recover!

That is why I have given my grand-daughters old notebooks running Edubuntu
with the Quimo desktop. The trick is to get them early before the Windoze
addiction takes hold.

[Hampshire] Network Scanner

2011-03-02 Thread Mike Austin
One MSW application that I really miss is Network Magic, as I currently have
12 wired and 3 wireless devices on my home network. I have been searching
for a Linux equivalent and this is the best I have tried. AutoScan-Network
a cross platform application designed to explore and to manage your network.
Entire subnets can be scanned simultaneously without human intervention. It
features OS detection, automatic network discovery, VNC Client, Ssh client.

You can download AustoScan from https://sourceforge.net/projects/autoscan/
or http://autoscan-network.com/

If you use the Linux version, the extracted installation file is
"AutoScan-Network-Linux-1.50.sh". With an .sh file, click on it and choose
"Run In Terminal".

[Hampshire] Crossover

2011-03-02 Thread Mike Austin
>>How are you running Outlook 2007, I do not understand? Using Crossover or
Wine or what?<<

I have used WINE but Crossover is worth paying for, as a contribution is
made to the WINE project. I have tested all the possible Linux email
clients, but none of them matches Outlook for my needs. One aspect I
particularly like is the single .pst file which I keep in Dropbox. This
enables me to switch computers and carry on using my Outlook once Dropbox
has synchronised my .pst file. As an example, I have just rebooted my
desktop into XP as I need to run a windows application that will not run in
Crossover. This time I am posting this from Outlook 2007 in XP.

The only slight drawback is copying and pasting text between a Linux app and
a Windows app running in Crossover - you have to keep both apps open or you
lose the clipboard.

I run several MSW apps in Crossover as the Linux equivalents do not suit my
needs e.g. Quicken 2004. I also run IE7 which I need for a few sites, as IE
Tab for Firefox does not work in Linux.

I have recently returned to living in the UK - Port Solent - and will get to
a meeting when the ski season finishes. Incidentally, I am the founder of
http://groups.google.com/group/ <http://groups.google.com/group/pc-answers>
pc-answers which has a worldwide membership of 110. However, most of the
members are MSW users while a few of us also use Linux and Mac OSX. One
members runs a Hackintosh - non Apple hardware but Mac OSX.

I run a dual boot of XP and Macbuntu on my Macbook Pro notebook. One member
suggested that my Macbook has an identity crisis!

[Hampshire] Libre Office

If you use Ubuntu-Tweak which you can obtain from your package manager, you
can configure your installation for Libre Office, amongst other things.
Ubuntu will then replace Open Office with Libre Office. Libre Office is
likely to become the defacto standard for many distros.

This post is written with Outlook 2007 in Ubuntu 10.10 with the Macbuntu

[Hampshire] Icecast Streaming

The iscan package should contain both the Image Scan application and the
driver package - essentially the file epkowa.conf. The latter is put into
/etc/sane.d. An edit of /etc/sane.d/dll.conf may be required. Quite how this
works depends on your package manager - I use Slackware so I usually
end up doing it by hand.

Using this driver, you should be able to use xscanimage or XSane as well
as Image Scan.

Scanners are generally supported by the SANE project. I would guess that
Ubuntu uses this too. They have a list of supported scanners.

http://www.sane-project.org/

The last time I looked at this I had great difficulty finding a model on
sale

which was supported by SANE. Most supported scanners in the list are
either obsolete or very rare.

However, most Epson scanners (at least the last time I looked) are supported
by Avasys drivers. This is probably you best chance at getting support for a
current model.

Although they have their own tool (Image Scan!) I use it with xsane.
Installation depends on distro - I haven't used it with Ubuntu. There
are deb

files and a pdf document on the site.

Re: [Hampshire] Slight Plea For Help

2010-08-06 Thread Mike Burrows

Hi Ben.

I live overseas so can't help physically but I remember my early days
with Debian (ask Hugo :) Keep plugging away its worth it in then end.
You have my moral support anyway. Great help Huh?

Kind regards
Mike

Hi,

If anyone is willing then I could do with some help. Our version of
linux sort-of works but is also really annoying and seems to fail on
some of the basics. Any attempts that I've made putting on a
different distro usually end in failure.

[Hampshire] Key board mapping.

2010-07-28 Thread Mike Burrows

Hello Folks.

I have just upgraded to Lenny. I believe I am using a US keyboard at
least it has a $ sign above the four and no gbp sign anywhere. :) When
I boot to command line the pipe symbol (shift \) on my key board appears
as a tilde. The tilde symbol doesn't work at all, in fact causes the
machine to beep and none of the other keys are mapped to |. Does
anybody know a hack/setting that sets the keyboard mapping during the
boot process before the xserver boots please.

TIA
Mike
