Re: [H] Weird keyboard problem on LG Gram laptop...

2024-03-06 Thread Bino Gopal
Heh yeah-I mean I was thinking the same thing...but pretty sure it's out of
warranty at this pint...guess I should look into that...

Though I have seen people complaining about having issues with failing
keyboards on these LG Grams and not being able to get them easily fixed-which
is weird as that's not something I've had much failure with on any of my other
laptops-lots of other things have failed like the screen hinge on my MSI
(multiple times) and the power and USB ports, but not keys randomly working/not
working like that...

And of course since I sent this it's both worked and stopped working, back and
forth completely randomly...and currently it's back to working since I can type
9(9(9(9( like this just fine... 😝

And the 7 key on the number pad started working again for the first time in a
while! 777! Cool!

Wish it was just consistent tho... :/

Ok this is SUPER WEIRD-the 9 key (and thus the left parentheses) started
working randomly today during the day for about 10 mins-I used both for like 10
mins today (tested it multiple times to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating) and
it was working fine!

Then a few mins after I tried it again and it wasn’t working again! So this
indicates that it’s likely some sort of weird software problem right?
or I
suppose it could be a weird random sticky hardware key problem

Any idea here??

So this seems like a perfect HWG list question...

I have a weird problem that just started happening a few weeks ago on the
keyboard of my LG Gram laptop from 2021...

The 9 key across the top stopped working completely (I have to use the one on
the numeric keypad to type 9).

I also can't use the left parentheses, and AFAIK there's no way to get that
symbol without using the ASCII key codes for it, ALT-0028-X, but that
apparently doesn't work everywhere like in Google Chat as I tried it to no
avail (unless some knows some trick to make it work) and I had to paste this
one in from the Character Map, which looks like it was the wrong font/size
now... :P

Weirdly enough the 7 key on the numeric keypad also stopped working too. Those
are the only two keys that aren't working AFAIK...

So I was wondering...I usually have taken my much older IBM Thinkpads apart in
the past, and esp my last laptop, an MSI gaming laptop which had a lot of
issues with the cover hinge breaking-but I stopped needing to do that back in
2020 or so and I'm not sure this LG Gram is as forgiving at being opened...

Is my only hope to take this sucker apart and see if there's something stuck in
those keys and it's some sort of physical issue causing the keys not to work,
or is this possibly some sort of software short circuit as the keys feel fine
and it's weird that those two just randomly stopped working no...?

Any help/advice appreciated! TIA!

P.S. In the past I've had issues with some of the keys, maybe even the 9 key
itself not working or sticking and repeating, but banging on it a few times
usually got it working...

I just cloned the M.2.

I did not try to wipe and reinstall on the old one. That would be a long term
task to get everything back the way that I wanted it. But, It may be something
I try in the future.

But, as of today, there have been no lockups.

So when you replaced the M.2 did you clone the install, or start fresh?

Wonder if it's not the physical M.2 SSD, but maybe the install of the OS/files
on it...

Did you try wiping the old M.2 SSD before replacing it?

Curious if it turns out to be a SW or HW issue-I think you isolated it down to
the M.2 clearly, but not sure it's been identified as either SW or HW on the
M.2 as a result, right?

It could be the M.2 SSD. I've only had 1 of those fail before but I'm sure it

Re: [H] Weird PC issue

2020-11-18 Thread Lubomír Čabla
To Bobby:

Unfortunately not.

I use normal HDD, no SSD or M2 SSD/NVME.

I only noticed this slowdown in the launch of the application in the
version Windows 2004 20H2/64 bit.

In previous versions, everything was fine, normal.

It could be the M.2 SSD. I've only had 1 of those fail before but I'm sure
it can happen just as easily as failure in SATA SSD (1 have 5 dead ones)

Re: [H] Weird PC issue

2020-11-03 Thread Lubomír Čabla
I have the same issue with VLC player.

First time the delay is about 15 seconds, next run is without delay.

After checking in the task manager (Details) I found out the cause:

MsMpEngCP.exe and MsMpEng.exe

They perform full control of the running program but only the first time.

Maybe it will help you.

Re: [H] Weird PC issue

2020-11-03 Thread Bobby Heid
Yes, it was good info.

Latest update. I swapped the 5TB HDD out for a new 6TB HDD. No changes. I
guess now I have lots more storage. 😊

Could this issue be with one of the SSDs? The Samsung Magician software says
those are ok.

Here is an odd thing that I noticed. Sometimes, when using my video editing
software (VideoReDo TVSuite V6), I noticed when I do something that causes the
app to open up the standard open file dialog, there can be a delay of between 5
and 20 seconds before the dialog window opens. Other times, it opens almost
instantly. This kind of led me to believe that it may have been the HDD
causing my issues. I would open a file from the HDD and set its output to the
non-NVME SSD.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Bobby

The drive I pulled passed every test, but had long pauses during some of them.
I basically swapped everything that could be swapped during testing except my

Hopefully you luck out and find the culprit too.

Thanks Joshua.

I ran all of those except for the performance monitoring one and all said OK.
An interesting note - some of those tests do not show the NVME SSD (Samsung 960
Pro SSD).

I did buy a new 6TB HD to swap out for the 5TB one to see if that may help.

Re: [H] Weird PC issue

2020-10-09 Thread Bobby Heid
Thanks. Could be on to something there. I will pursue looking at testing the
drive.

The locking up can happen whether it is recording or not. I was trying to
demonstrate that I did not think processes were executing while it appeared
locked up.

Thanks,
Bobby

Strangely enough my bad drive passed chkdsk multiple times without one fail, so
pulling it was a last ditch effect since I'd already swapped video card, RAM
and power supply.

Thanks. Ran ChkDsk and it found nothing wrong. I even ran the WD quick tests

Re: [H] Weird PC issue

2020-10-09 Thread lopaka polena
I was getting that same error a while back. It was happening for about a
month every day or two, and sometimes all through the day I'd have hard
lockups. I stress tested the hardware and everything passed but I would
notice long pauses at times that seemed to be related to accessing an older
HDD. Turned out it was a failing seagate HDD, although that drive passed
every test I ran on it. For the hell of it I copied all the data from the
drive that seemed to be pausing too often, to another 4TB HDD and pulled
the original HDD and haven't had a problem since. It seemed weird because
the error is generic and doesn't point to any specific hardware issue.

[H] Weird PC issue

2020-10-09 Thread Bobby Heid
Hi,

I have had some issues going on with my pc for several months now.

There are two issues.

1. Once every several weeks or so, I get a bluescreen -
IPI_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT. I can live with this one. Things that I have tried
to fix this do not seem to have helped.
2. The big issue is that my PC keeps locking up. This happens from 0-5
times per day. I may go 3 days without it happening and then have it happen
3 times in one day. Here are some details:

a. When it locks up, the HD activity light is doing a very fast, steady
flash.
b. There is no warning when it will happen.
c. It happens whether I am using the PC or not.
d. Seems to happen more often overnight than during the day. But not
always.
e. When it locks up, I can still move the mouse cursor and move
windows. I cannot close a window or start another program.
f. When it locks up when not using PC, sometimes the login screen image
will show, sometimes not.
g. CTL-Alt-Delete does nothing when locked.
h. PC stays up 24/7. No sleep or hibernation.
i. When it locks up, if the system is recording a show (from a
networked TV Tuner), the recording stops, so I assume that most apps are not
still running when it locks up.
j. If a recording was scheduled while it is locked up, nothing is
created.
k. To reset, I have to press and hold the power button until the system
turns off.
l. Through trial and error, it seems that turning off letting the
monitors going to sleep seems to have lessened the frequency of the lock
ups. I am not sure if this was not just a coincidence.

Here are my system specs:

*   Asus X99 Deluxe-II MB
* Intel i7-6850k CPU (not overclocked)
*   Asus GeForce GTX 1070
*   Corsair water cooler
*   Corsair 32GB RAM
*   Samsung 960 Pro SSD (512GB) - OS
*   Samsung 860 EVO SSD 1TB
*   WD 5TB Black
*   Pioneer Blu Ray drive
*   Dual monitors
*   Corsair HX-850 PSU
*   Corsair K70 LUX keyboard
*   Logitech MX Master mouse
*   Windows 10 Pro - 2004 - 19041.508

I am not too keen on a nuke and install. It would take me forever to get
everything back the way it was. But I am not ruling that out.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Bobby

Re: [H] Weird sticky/not working keys on MSI laptop

2020-01-17 Thread Bino Gopal
Yeah just as an update to this I did a lot more googling and it seemed like
some people were hoping it was some software issue (as I was too really)-but I
realized that if I plugged in an external KB that would show if it was software
or not-and lo and behold an external KB didn't have any problems!

So looks like it was def some sort of HW issue-the one I saw mentioned most was
that the KB ribbon cable gets worn/bent b/c of how tight it's in there and the
way it's bent and thus it eventually starts having issues and just needs to be
replaced...and I've had it almost 3 years now so I guess it's about time...

So I was going to just replace the cable but then they're like we have to open
the whole thing up so in case there's any issue with the KB do you really want
to chance it so I decided to just have them replace the KB too...

BUT in my model it turns out that you can't just replace the KB itself-it
doesn't exist on its own as it's attached to the top cover/part of it so the
whole thing has to replaced! So I went in to the local repair center and they
replaced the whole top cover and KB as one piece for $90 and the keys work
fine...

BUT now the key travel and some of the key don't feel quite right-and a couple
of the keys keep popping off and I have to keep popping them back on, and some
others are sticking so it seems like this replacement KB is not as good,
so...yeah... 😝

Thanks for your input/help tho Lopaka! Much appreciated!

So I thought it might be this and turned it all off (anything with any toggle
under Settings, Interaction, Keyboard).

Still no dice. None of the keys listed below (backspace, semicolon comma and
right arrow and number pad slash) don't all work-well I apparently got it to
type one comma as you can see after the backspace earlier in this sentence but
not after that...

Any further ideas...?! This is driving me crazy! It's still a fine laptop
except for this one minor but super annoying issue...! Thanks man.

[H] Weird sticky/not working keys on MSI laptop

2020-01-02 Thread Bino Gopal
Hey guys, this has been going on for a while now and I'm at a loss...

Certain keys on my keyboard have stopped working properly...but it's not as if
the physical key itself is not working b/c I can get the character to type fine
if I use the SHIFT key on it for most of them (that have that option).

For example, my backspace key def stopped working right so I have to use
delete. If I slam it hard a bunch of times sometimes it registers but most of
the time it doesn't.

But the semicolon key stopped working, but as soon as I hit SHIFT I can get a
colon to type pretty easily. But never a semicolon (on occasion it's hard to
get the colon to type too, but it eventually works-but the semicolon never
does...)

The comma never works, but the lesser than sign works fine with SHIFT.

Oh and the right arrow key stopped working which is super annoying...the slash
on the number pad doesn't work...ok this is weird-it does work if I hold down
SHIFT...so strange...!! Ok I just figured out that I can get backspace to work
if I hold down the SHIFT key! The right arrow key also starts working that
way, but it does select text when used with SHIFT, which is what it's supposed
to do in that case-but I mean it moves the cursor right while doing so, which I
can't get it to do otherwise! Oh though holding down CTRL and right arrow does
advance it by each word (which is also how that's supposed to work...)

So the key is physically working but not being registered by the system...it's
an MSI GS73VR 7RF Stealth Pro from 2017 fully loaded running the latest Win10
updates...

So this seems like some sort of driver/OS/software issue right? Any ideas?
Googling didn't uncover anything...any help desperately appreciated guys!

of AMD and nvidia GPUs, on multiple motherboards/platforms, across multiple
OS versions, and over multiple interfaces (DP and DVI). In my case, power
cycling the monitor (by way of the switch) usually resolves. I run multiple
monitors, and when it happens, it usually affects only one display. I've
given up trying to resolve and have just accepted it as an (infrequent)
side-effect of using power saving.

Subject: [H] weird monitor bug

Recently bought a Samsung 3D monitor, not using 3D so I have no idea
why I did that but the bug is sometimes the monitor will not wake up
with the computer. Can be set for screen saver only or monitor sleep,
no difference.
cable is display port. I have to pull the power off the monitor and
plug it back in and it comes back so is not the computer not waking.

Anyone seen this bug ? was thinking of going back to the HDMI cable
and see if that helps.

Any ideas appreciated. Video card is a GTX 680. DM just shows generic
display driver installed.
Thanks

Are you saying the monitor goes blank (off) even if the computer is not
sleep? If that is not a feature of the monitor, I'd view it as a defect
of the monitor.

I doubt that's an infection nor a result of a password bypass unless
it wasn't obtained from a credible source.

I would think this is a driver issue esp where everything is fine in
safe mode. Have you tried having them reload the drivers for the video
card? See if there are any gamma tweaks going on also. Report

If nothing is found then look at the Video Drivers. Reinstall the video

[H] Weird PC problem.

2010-01-05 Thread Bobby Heid
Hey,

One of my wife's friends called tonight with a problem that I have never
heard of.

This PC (that I have not seen yet) is pretty old (she thinks it could be
over 10 years old). She told me that it had been in the shop about 3 years
ago and had been upgraded to XP, so it must have had new hardware put in it.

Anyway, when booting up and it is showing the XP loading screen, the screen
starts blinking on and off. She says that it might stay off 2-3 seconds at
a go. Even after logging in, when moving the mouse, it causes the screen to
blink off. She says that it does not blink on and off when she goes into
safe mode.

One other possibly key piece of information is that apparently, her son had
tried to get around her XP password with some sort of utility (she did not
know what he tried). She thinks that this stuff did not start happening
until after he tried that stuff.

So, could it be some sort of infection? Maybe the PS or video card? She
replaced the monitor and it still does the same thing. Or maybe a driver
issue of some sort since it works in safe mode?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bobby

[H] weird mouse bug

Have a Logitech laser mouse, been a very good mousy with exceptional battery
life ( why I bought it)

have one of the side buttons that I have always had set for double click keeps
reverting back to default setting ( search) even though the sw says it is set
for double click. On reboot double click works for a short time and sometimes
if I change the settings to something else and back it works for awhile. No sw
updates b4 bug. updated sw still have bug. very annoying, use that button a
lot. even if I set it to do nothing it comes back and works at default setting.
Almost ready to look for another mouse or maybe even try removing the sw
completely and see what shakes.

anyone else seen a bug like this ? mouse is a mx620 FWIW

Microsoft is redranding Hotmail as part of it's windows live strategy,
which is aimed at competing with the google Internet suite (mail,

If you were posting 500 emails from your system your ISP would shut
you down pretty quickly. So it sounds like a spamer is spoofing your
email address to send out spam, and then the bad addresses are
bouncing back to you.

Once this happens there is nothing you can do except live with it or

Not that I know of, other than changing your email address.

It is still possible that it is your machine. Are you running a firewall
that can check outgoing connections? If so, you might try locking
everything down and re-allowing stuff you know is ok.

I'm sure there are many others on this list that will have better info.

Brian,

A pc I had at work doing something similar (but only pausing for about 2-5
seconds at a time). It would come and go. When it happened, it might
happen 10 times/minute, then not happen for a few days. I finally traced
it

down to problems with the HD. I replaced the HD and all was well. Now, I
am not sure that your issue is the same, but you never know.

Ok here's a stumper. Built a box a couple years ago that I have been
using ever since with a few component upgrades (Athlon 64 3000+, X800
GTO2, 9NPA Ultra mobo, 2GB of PC3200). Runs great except for a very
annoying problem. Every couple hours, the machine completely freezes
up - mouse, video output, sound, everything. It stays that way for
20-30 seconds and then goes back to normal. If music was playing it
resumes right where it left off. In the middle of a game no problem.
If I was playing a game online it would time out and drop. And if I
was burning a CD/DVD it would fail.

Last week I upgraded my video card to a X1950 and the problem has
gotten worse in that it is now happening every 15-20 minutes. But
other than this problem the machine is rock solid and doesn't crash or
anything.

Any thoughts on what could be causing it? I don't think it is a
software problem as I have reinstalled a few times from scratch and
the problem has never gone away. I believe my CPU is running at stock
speed (Venice core 3000+ running at 1.8 Ghz at 9x200Mhz and 1.56V).
Temps are fine too (CPU is 41C and video is 52C).

I agree, it could be the HD(s), especially if you are using an
on-board RAID. Check the HD light when it happens to see if it's on
solid. Even if not and you are running multiple HD's, try just one,
or try changing from SATA to IDE.

Might want to check fans and swap the PSU... Funky PSU's can cause
things like that to happen. Although - they usually don't recover.

Yeah I was thinking maybe a driver quirk - which you would have to
install after the windows reload...

The symptoms are like clockwork but I cannot reproduce the error and
it does not occur at regular intervals. It used to happen once every
few hours and since the video card install it is now happening once or
twice an hour. Of course when I try and burn a DVD it seems to happen
every 20 min :(

I could understand that - if you didn't have a lot of ram and needed
to swap a lot I could see a HD causing that problem. But with mine I
don't even have a swap file active and as far as I can tell using
SpinRite my HD is just fine.

Try fixing it with this:

Uninstall
Rename the MSN Messenger/Live Messenger folder to *.old
Reinstall
If that doesn't fix it, go out to the command problem and run the
following commands:

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

Then reboot.

I've seen this problem now on three machines, with both MSN Messenger
7.5 and Live Messenger (current version.) The login screen comes up,
but when you type in the username box, nothing appears for about six
seconds, during which time, the mouse pointer won't appear inside the
login box - in other words, if yo move the mouse pointer across the
screen, it dissappears "behind" the login box, and then reappears on
the other side. If you do get the username and password typed in,
then it says it can't connect because the service isn't
available. Anyone see this and have a solution? Uninstalling and
reinstalling seems to work some of the time.

I've never seen this before & you would think I would with C, D being
local HDs, E, F, & G being optical drives, H, I are mapped drives

Starting back in the Windows 95 days where the only drive other than the
hard drive was a CD ROM and possibly a Zip Drive, I assigned the Drive
Letter R to all CD ROMS and when there were two optical drives I assigned Q
to the writer. I did this for all computers I worked on and for all new
computers I built. I explaned to my customers that the future would bring
additional drives and there should be plenty of space between the group,
A,B,C,D etc. and R for those additional drives. This would ensure that the
optical drives never got reassigned due to adding other drives in the
future.

That decision was badly needed and the timing on it was perfect. Now we have
jump drives, external hard drives and card readers, just to name a few. So
far I have not seen any computer I assigned optical drive letters of Q
and/or R run out of lower letters and the optical drive have to be bumped up
in the alphabet.

Most of the Windows 95 computers I assigned the CD ROM drive to R did not
remain in use so long that they needed that space between D and Q. The
customers got use to the arrangement and the transition to a new computer
was easy, if they had me build their next new computer. This is just one of
the many things I have done over the years to keep things simple and require
less changes to adapt to new drives and technologies.

Now to the subject at hand. Is it easier for a thumb drive to simply take an
open Letter Assignment if it does not have to bump an optical drive up a
letter?

Typically what happens is you have local drives C D and E. You also have a
mapped drive F. Then you put your thumb drive in and nothing happens, but
if you look in device manager it is there... but not in explorer. The
solution is to assign it a drive ..Y.

Do do you see it in Device Manager?

HmmI have one mapped drive as z:and I have a 5-in-1 card reader
which takes up several drive letters.
So the two opticals are D and E, then I have 4 removables (media card
reader) which takes up F, G, H, and I. Then my back up firewire HD is K, so
this guy should come in a L. The mapped drive is z. I can actually have to
it as L, too. But I can't get Explorer to see it.

Very seldom is the problem hardware related, such as a bad PS/2 keyboard or
mouse port. When it is, you can circumvent it (patch job) by using a USB
keyboard or mouse.

As a technician I have found a very valuable diagnostic tool to be Windows
98 installed on a small IDE hard drive. Windows 98 will load in Safe Mode on
most any IBM compatible computer. Just unhook your hard drive and hook up
the hard drive containing Windows 98. If you are using a SATA hard drive,
there is no need to unhook it. Most computers try first to boot to an IDE
hard drive if one is hooked up.

Hit F8 and select Safe Mode. Once Windows 98 is loaded in Safe Mode you will
have use of your mouse and keyboard. If your mouse and keyboard work here
(but did not work in Windows XP) there is nothing wrong that a format and
reinstall job will not fix. I just fixed a keyboard problem yesterday by
formatting and reinstalling. I tried the built in Windows XP Restore thingy
but that did not solve the problem.

So here we go again, the patch 'em up team who loves to "fix" Windows
screaming, "Do not format! Fix it!" And we on the format and reinstall team,
"Don't tune it up, just replace the engine! (Windows XP). This sounds like
the Democrats and Republicans, doesn't it?

The only thing I kick myself for is fooling around trying to fix it for a
few minutes before going ahead with the format and reinstall job. When the
internal Restore thingy works, it goes home and comes back a week later with
the same problem. The results of most patch jobs are the same.
