Re: [hlds] TF2.... How can it be fun?

2007-09-29 Thread Graham Robinson
I really disliked the respawn time until I realised that it is fast
for attackers, slow for defenders and equal on normal maps. This does
make for a far more attacking game where on the final point it gives
an extra 10 seconds or so for the attacking team to move towards your
point. It's irritating if you are desperately trying to defend your
point but at a game level it seems about right.

I am, however, very surprised at how long it takes to connect to a server.

totally agree on the respawn time.

[hlds] Linking a spray to a user

2006-11-07 Thread Graham Robinson

Hi helpful bunch.

I use mani spray tracker and recently banned a user for spraying some
tasteless and illegal images of minors on my server.

I have reported the user to the abuse email of his ISP and would
really like to report him to the legal authorities too, however I know
that they will want specific proof.

I haven't touched any logs on the server and used HLSW to get the guys
IP address but is there a way of linking a spray that sits in the
downloads directory of the server to the person that uploaded it? I
don't even know of a way to open the files there but I'm sure that the
authorities could work it out,

I find it sick that someone wouldn't send this stuff to anyone
physically, but they think that on the internet and in games it is OK
because they are anonymous. I want to prove this isn't true. He must
have this image on his computer and that is illegal and wrong.

It is a linux server but I'm sure the spray downloading works the same on both.

You don't need to decompile the map to add spawn points. You can add

The map version won't differ. I used that method to add a chicken model,

Re: [hlds] Server hosting

2006-10-03 Thread Graham Robinson

I'm going back a while but that option in steam where it asks you what
your internet connection is is best set to your upload speed. That
setting is used when pinging the servers around you to ensure that not
too many are pingged at the same time if your connection cannot handle
it.

What happens however is that most people set it to 2MB+ when
(certainly in the UK) their upload speed is more likely to be 256K.
Therefore too many servers get pinged and the reply back takes longer
than it would if that server would have been pinged individually.

So what I suggest is to put that setting down to 256K and then let the
server browser fill up.

The site that we believe released the hack in the first place (
http://www.icthacks.com ) no longer allows activation of new users. My
guess is that they don't want server admins or valve developers finding out
about the exploit. But that is just speculation. After searching through my
server logs for a while, I found a few examples of what happens when a
hacker uses the exploits described above.

I've emailed a few people on this thread a user/pass if they want a

2005-09-22 Thread Graham Robinson
Thank you all for answering my questions on this topic. Just for the
sake of the next person who tries to do this I thought that I would
summerise my experience.

1. Find webspace and put maps folder with bsp files into it
2. Set SV_DownloadURL (ensuring there is no forward slash on the end
and the folder that you set is has the same contents as the cstrike
directory, obviously just the bits that need downloading)
3. Changelevel to a different map to test to see if the downloads work
without compression
4. Download bzip2 [ http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/bzip2.htm ]
5. Install into default location
6. { My computer properties advanced environment variables path
} add your bzip2 installation directory to here (it means you can run
the command from command prompt no matter which folder you are in)
7. Create a folder and put your maps in it
8. Create a .bat file (make a text file and rename it zip_maps.bat)
9. Put this one line in it
 bzip2 -k -9 *.bsp
10. Run the bat file
11. Make 2 subfolders called 'original maps' and 'compressed maps' to
ensure that you don't re-zip the same files each time
12. Upload .bsp file to the game server
13. Upload the .bsp.bz2 file to the web server
14. With a new map, test

If I removed the .BSP map from the Server (Webserver) the map with the
.BSP.BZ2, downloaded but then reported the Map.bsp was missing. When I went

sucessfully downloaded did not go into the client directory for MAPS.

So Second test. I loaded up the Map.BSP and the MAP.BSP.BZ2 on the Web

[hlds] Fast rate of fire on servers

2005-09-20 Thread Graham Robinson
I have been on a couple of match servers that have fast rates of fire
on weapons like AK47s and get annoyed that people would change the
fire rates to try and get an advantage on maps. However I found that
it happened on our server the other day with no-one changing anything
(I am the only one with an rcon password)

Is there sv_ commands for rate of fire on weapons and if not is there
something that causes the firerate to go up that anyone knows about.

P.S. anyone worked out how to make a black crosshair yet?

Re: [hlds] Fast rate of fire on servers

2005-09-20 Thread Graham Robinson
When you tag your subject HLDS, then I have to assume you mean HLDS not
SRCDS

Sorry, that would be GMail tagging it as [EMAIL PROTECTED] rather than [EMAIL
PROTECTED]

With regard to the original question, any noticeable loss or choke? -

All the time, with choke also but 99% of the time without any choke
and still fast

Is it actually the client firing rate that is different, whereas the
 server is processing correctly?

Well all clients seem to see the weapon discharge which would be the
server talking right? I suppose it's hard to answer that question with
100% certainty because the server doesn't log each bullet being fired.

Any mods? Chance of a mod being hacked? Anyone possibly have access to
 your server.cfg?

Mani, mattie, hlstatsx. Only myself and the hosts could get to the server.cfg

How long does the problem last?

About a month. Which does coincide with a 66 tick increase. However
after 3 days we went back to a 33 tick for a week and then went back
up to 66 tick. The fast weapons were fast throughout all of it.

Does anything else noticeable occur at
the same time? Have you tried running an rcon revert all?

Revert all did nothing, I just tested it. Seeing as it is constantly
doing it I can't really say if something is happening at the same
time.

I have personally seen less cheaters on my server and I can actually
see lists on mine of people that have been vac banned (

list but at least it shows people are getting caught.

If you want to catch cheaters for on the spot kicking then have a look
at Wraven's autoban plugin. It's still in beta but getting better all
the time. My server suffers with lag spikes occasionally which seemed
to create a lot of false positives with 0.4.

Re: [hlds] VAC2 questions.

2005-07-13 Thread Graham Robinson
Is it active now and banning?

Yes, have a look at your logs

When can we expect to have it loaded by default on HL1 servers?

The stickies in steampowered will tell you that they are not telling
people dates, however you will probably find that Alfred will give a
'server will needed to be updated' heads-up about it 2-4 hours before
it comes.

Can we get a hint if it is working well, from valve?
 Numbers of bans/detections by now?

Again the stickies say this won't be disclosed. However I can tell you
that about 20 out of 1,000 people on my server since the update
haven't been let in since VAC2 went live. And you can make the
presumption that a lot of them have stopped trying to get into secure
servers now they are banned so won't show up in many logs.

Can't you remove the exec banned.cfg from the server.cfg (loads every
map) and put it into autoexec.cfg (loads every server reset). Then all
the banned users are put into the memory of the server and it doesn't
have to go through each one again every time it changes.

 Hey,

Our banfile (banned.cfg) is approximatly 80KB - On our natural selection
servers, when the mission changes, it is very slow at loading the new
mapcycle (players sit at the map changing screen for ~20-30 secs). We have
also seen servers crashing (servers are also crashing every so often in CS
Source for us, this could be related to the banfile size as well, its also
 80KB).

As soon as that file is blank, mission changes are instant - And this could
be resolving our css server crashes, although im yet to test this theory.

Anyone else experiencing problems with large ban files?

Obviously, removing some bans from the file is not a fix :)

 Thanks,

[hlds] Watching Src TV

2005-05-10 Thread Graham Robinson
Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

I was watching a clan match on SrcTV of Sars clan Vs Terra (UK) and
getting impressed at how good the auto director was. The game was
transmitted with a 90 second delay.

However, near the end of the game the server cut off and loaded a new
map. The reason was the server had loaded a new map and SrcTV doesn't
take into account the delay. So I lost exactly 90 seconds of match.

So is there any way that SrcTV can be made to delay the end of the map
so that we can watch the ends of matches please? Obviously it doesn't
make any difference to the demos being recorded but it spoils a live
match.

Thanks

Seeing as the options to be VAC secure haven't been released and
Alfred has already commented on list and on forum about it being a
glitch that it showed as secure, and steambans said that VAC is being
tested on servers that don't actually show as secure... maybe you
should wait a little longer before complaining.

Last time I checked a beta test was to include more then just one group.
Its distributed to multiple platforms to test various server configurations.
This is done to ensure that MOST of the bugs are worked out and the software
is stable across multiple platforms. I think back to the days of steam
beta.gee that wasn't an exclusive beta test. Not one SOLE group, but
 multiple groups.
